Heading back home today! Now we just need that outcome for a few million more folks…

Jesus Berrones, the Phoenix man who was ordered to be deported even though his 5-year-old son has a rare form of leukemia, gets to go home to be with his family today. After national publicity surrounding his case, Immigration and Customs Enforcement yesterday afternoon granted Berrones a one-year stay of his deportation order, along with a permit to allow him to go back to work as a furniture upholsterer. We aren’t going to accuse ICE of having suddenly acquired even basic decency, but the agency apparently knows what terrible publicity looks like, and decided not to raid the church where Berrones had sought sanctuary.

As we noted yesterday, Jesus Berrones, 30, was brought to the US illegally when he was a baby himself, and has lived his entire life here. His wife, Sonia, and their five children are all citizens, and he’s the only one able to give Jayden his chemo meds because Sonia is pregnant — inhaling fumes from the open pill bottle could cause birth defects. Jesus had been under a deportation order previously, but had been granted a stay in 2016; in December, ICE rejected his request for another stay and told him he’d be deported. Instead, he sought sanctuary at Shadow Rock United Church of Christ, where he’s been since Friday.

Then yesterday, Berrones received a notice that he’d been given a new one-year stay and work permit. ICE’s Phoenix office issued the tersest possible statement:

In an exercise of discretion, ICE has granted Jesus Armando Berrones-Balderas a one-year stay of removal on humanitarian grounds […] ICE issued a previous one-year stay in June 2016.

ICE has routinely given stays of deportation to parents of gravely ill children, so December’s denial and the subsequent demand that he turn himself in yesterday to be deported was seen as a harsher twist in the Trump administration’s approach to deportations. While this renewed stay is fantastic news for the Berrones family, let’s not laud ICE too much for doing the bare minimum to accommodate a medical crisis — and under Donald Trump’s deport-everyone regime, Jesus Berrones will still be targeted for removal at the end of Jayden’s treatment, expected to take another two years. Jesus was too old to qualify for DACA; it’s unclear whether he’d be helped by Trump’s proposed deal to fix that program, which also demands huge cuts in legal immigration, forever.

Mr. Berrones stayed one more night at the church Monday, and is planning to return home today. Elsewhere across America, the New Cruelty marches on, scooping up far more people with no criminal convictions than the Bad Hombres Trump insisted would be targeted — which is exactly what his white supremacist base wants.

The Shadow Rock UCC will continue to shelter at least four other people from ICE, because clearly these are some Christians who’ve read the manual, especially that stuff in Matthew 25 about how we should treat everyone: as family. The church’s FAQ on why it provides sanctuary is quite simply wonderful:

Um, should you be telling us that you’re hiding people in your church?

No, because we’re not hiding anyone. When we bring a guest into sanctuary, we notify ICE, and even hold a press conference. Our guests remain on our campus while they’re in sanctuary, but we’re not squirreling them away in the choir loft.

The church has also set up a special Immigration Issues Fund to support its sanctuary work; if you want to send them a few Ameros, that donation is separate from the church’s general operations account. It’s a good reminder that for all the horrors of the Trump years, there are plenty of people who aren’t going to stand for it.

And for god’s sake, make sure everyone you know is registered and votes in November. This madness has to end.

Yr Wonkette is supported by reader donations. Click here to help. Today, we’d be just as happy if you sent a few dollars to the Shadow Mountain UCC’s Immigration Issues fund.

ICE’s transition into the American SS will have to wait another day.

  • Msgr_MΩment

Jesus Berrones Christ, these people are sick.

  • Villago Delenda Est

Oh, so the Gestapo is being nice to this “undesirable”. Who isn’t a member of MS-13, who is a productive member of society (unlike say Uday, Qusay, or Lolita) and obeys every law but one, which didn’t exist when Donald’s undocumented Grandfather and mother entered this county.

  • Lance Thrustwell

This particular action by ICE is nice (if self-serving), I suppose, but it’s just a sop. Why is it so goddamned hard for these anti-immigrant people to just say, “they’ve been here a long time, they’re one of us now.” I mean, isn’t that the sensible position? The conservative position, if you will?

I mean, you could be 100% pro-wall, and you should still feel that way! What the actual fuck is wrong with these people?

    • Villago Delenda Est

Brown. Evil! They’re infringing on our white way of life! Never mind that these people are assimilating to the civil culture, they’ll never be proper Aryans.

      • Lance Thrustwell

I suspect this is the heart of it. And a lot of people are in denial about their own racism.

        • TJ Barke

Here’s the thing; they think that racism is only an irrational prejudice against other races, but they believe their own prejudice is entirely rational, therefore not racist.

          • willi0000000

for that you get an “amen” from this atheist.

Jorge Barón, executive director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, said the ICE warrants are a big problem.

“When people think of a warrant, (they think) a judge has signed off on it. An independent fact finder has said whatever the police officer or law enforcement said appears to meet a threshold,” Barón said. “That’s the thing with these ICE ‘warrants,’ they’re not approved by an immigration judge. They’re not approved by a federal judge. Nobody independently reviews them.”

I’m still not sure how ripping families to pieces is sticking it to MS-13, but I dare not question the genius of the man who gave us such smashing success stories as Trump University, Trump Steaks, Trump Vodka, Trump Airlines, the Trump Taj Mahal, the United States Football League and his first two marriages.

    • Walter Wellstone

It’s not about that. It’s about skin color. They will dance around the issue until they’re confident they don’t have to anymore. That may come as soon as December if they retain their majorities in the House and Senate after the midterm elections. This is why we need to vote against these motherfuckers like our lives depend on it.

      • Villago Delenda Est

Because even if we’re pasty white, our lives do!

        • Walter Wellstone

Some idiot Trump supporter was replying to one of his tweets today, talking about how he was a success because he was a “disrupter” and he could “see around corners” and because he’d done it so well in business he was now doing it in government. Yeah, I am sure the guy was delusional or on drugs. I’d never seen that seeing around corners thing.

  • Squeegee

The hypocrisy here is that the same big businesses like Koch that benefit from undocumented workers who are long term residents of the US are the same ones funding the Republican war machine.

    • Villago Delenda Est

Regulations are nearly always paid for in blood.

      • Snowbound Ron

Your timing sounds sensible. Without Dem control of Congress – AND the willingness to be as brutal in repealing this cruelty as the Rs were in enacting it – this all will continue. Hell, it’d probably get WORSE.

        • Walter Wellstone

I is oldz and I don’t have time to put up with shit no more. From where I’m at there’s just so much I can invest in fighting these motherfuckers. It’s a trade-off and I choose to live my last few years in a nice place with good company, good food, good wine and great weed. If we can’t start taking our country back in November I’ll leave it to others to keep trying. My time is almost up and I want to make the most of it.

    • Walter Wellstone

It’s not a stereotype. It is a well documented fact that sociopaths gravitate towards conservatism because it provides a framework they can use to justify their behavior. No other ideology glorifies greed and selfishness and no other ideology sanctions the cruelty that’s required to exercise greed and reap its benefits. Sociopaths make excellent Republicans for that very reason. Don’t feel bad. There’s plenty of evidence behind this assertion. So, carry on.

I figured Steve Martin wouldn’t mind too much if I repurposed a line from LA Story. Apparently there was a deleted minor subplot about an aesthetic trend called “the New Cruelty,” and the only remnant was a throwaway reference to it before the restaurant scene.

“I just lost my upholstering job to an illegal immigrant!”
    — no one, ever

    • Hardly Ideal

I do kind of want to ask my brother how he, personally, has suffered because of illegal immigration.

Then again, he also told me a couple weekends ago that we should cauterize the Fallopian tubes of anyone who has eight babies, so I can make some guesses on how that conversation would go.

You begin to conclude that God made families because otherwise we’d have to spend our whole lives being horrified by strangers instead of by the people we’re related to.

This still doesn’t get Thomas Homan off the hook. I wanna see that guy put in a glass booth and prosecuted by Robert Jackson.

    • phoenix00

He’s simply looking for the next target of his Kristallnacht campaign, rest assured.

  • AnnieGetYerFun

This hurts my heart. Donating to the church now.

  • Bitter Scribe

Don’t forget that this is all Obama’s fault because he didn’t deport this guy first, so Trump has to. Or something like that.

  • Mintie

Definite Nice Time, both for the father and his family, and the church who’s actually willing to put its money (and freedom! Because don’t tell me there are people itching to throw these guys in jail) where its mouth is.

  • SadDemInTex

Fuck this fucking 45 WH…..with something really really unpleasant.

  • sarafina

Okay, if The Dotard can, out of the blue, issue these hate-filled rules, is there any reason when we get a POTUS with a heart and soul these rules can’t be modified to reflect sanity? Of course, we’d need a new Congress also, but saying The Dotard wants huge changes that would cut legal immigration FOREVER seems more final than it actually is.

    • phoenix00

Unless and until the Nazis stop actually wanting to cut legal immigration, assume it’s permanent and final.

So how long after the media attention dies down will they reverse this?

Need conference w/ Doktor Zoom. Rather Urgent. Would a $50 donation do it? Actually serious.

    • doktorzoom

A $50 donation is always welcome, but either way, my email address is listed under “contact” at the top of the page. Can’t guarantee a “conference” but I will check my email for a change.

Dok, if I could upvote an article, I’d give this one a hundred-fucking-thousand.

“Hey, Jesus, we’re gonna come back and get you as soon as your kid dies.” – ICE

  • TakingAmes

United Church of Christ is good people. I live in the liberal hellscape known as Chicago, and I am certain that, should our rebellious Mayor allow ICE to do these deportation thingies here, that my UCC church will do the same. I’ll keep folks in my guest room, too, for that matter.

  • Brian Fowler

Abolish the ICE. Throw them all on their asses. No severance pay. Call it downsizing, or synergy.

    • phoenix00

Those Libertarians do want smaller government. No better place to start.
