This year, in between the punching of neo-Nazis and environmental catastrophes, a lot of great stories were told by people who opened up their worlds to curious outsiders. Consider this a hat tip, a smile and nod to the people who went the extra mile, raged against the machines, and weren’t afraid to get dirty. They are your servants, except Maggie Haberman: the members of our Fourth Estate.

Harvey Weinstein falls so hard he takes other perverts with him.

After dozens of women came forward to tell detailed horror stories of sexual assault and abuse from media mogul Harvey Weinstein, an adviser commented to the New York Times that Weinstein was “an old dinosaur learning new ways.” Shortly thereafter, we learned Weinstein literally hired spies and PIs to track nosy journalists, and that he had secretly bought his victims’ silence. The results of these stories empowered people, not just men and women, and created the opportunity to address the obscene habits of sexual abuse and torture at the hands of some of the most powerful people in the world, and hold them accountable.

Roy Moore hates gays, minorities, Muslims, liberals, Jews, and women, but he LOVES kids.

On the morning of Nov. 9, polls showed Roy Moore crushing Democrat Doug Jones, but everything changed when WaPo dropped a bombshell story about Roy Moore’s molestation of a 14-year-old girl in the 1970s. Over the following days, more women came forward with similar stories. As reporters dug into Moore’s past, they found it was “common knowledge” Moore preyed on teenage girls during the 1980s, and that he was banned from the Gadsden Mall. With polls growing tighter, the wingnut-o-sphere went into overdrive, using robocalls, lie detector tests, and Trump tweets. It all backfired when WaPo hilariously exposed a Project Veritas cos-player attempting to bait reporters with bogus stories.

R. Kelly has a sex cult, and he used to hold it in Trump Tower

When Jim DeRogatis broke the story about R. Kelly’s secret sex cult it seemed to confirm decades of rumors that the singer was was more than just a pedophile and pervert. Kelly tried to keep his dirty laundry trapped in the closets of Trump Tower by denying everything, but then another woman came forward and confirmed that Kelly maintains a secret brainwashed harem of barely legal sex slaves. In an interview after the initial story was published, DeRogatis noted, “…If it had been one white girl, this would have been a different story. But it continues to be young African-American women that he’s preying on, and I can’t think of anybody who the media cares less about. It’s horrifying to me.”

Neo-Nazis are even worse than you thought.

The “Unite the Right” protest saw tiki-torch-wielding neo-Nazis marching down the streets of Charlottesville, VA, to profess their love for Donald Trump, and their hatred of everyone and everything else. They left three people dead, including two police officers, and scores of counter-protesters injured before the alt-right darlings retreated to their spider holes. Vice reporter Elle Reeve and her crew were able to get chilling footage and interviews that have to be seen to be believed.

Mexico and America’s horrible, no good, very bad drug and border wars.

America’s opioid crisis is bad, and it’s not getting better, but the side effects have left even more victims in Mexico. These photo essays show how the drug war has led to the rise of cartels in Acapulco and border towns. In turn, the cartels have left Mexicans struggling to deal their own drug addictions. While illegal migration may be down, and Trump mulls funding for his Tortilla Curtain,  illegal border crossings look all too similar.

Your mother loves you very much, go call her right now!

Earlier this year, ProPublica and NPR started investigating the high number of pregnancy-related deaths in the US. The ongoing series is both thought provoking and gut wrenching, telling the personal stories of mothers who died, showing how hospitals and doctors have failed black mothers, and how there is little to no data collection on maternal deaths. Again, since this investigation is ongoing, you can help by telling your story.

Dear Mike Pence, Thanks for all the dead bodies. Love, Chicago.

Forget everything you’ve heard about the post-apocalyptic murder maze known as Chicago: There’s a good chance none of it is true. Chicago’s NPR affiliate, WBEZ, has spent the past year analyzing the minute details of Chicago’s gun violence and put together a multimedia project that walks you through how guns get to Chicago, the politicians who carry, even the booming funeral industry. [Full Disclosure: I contributed to this investigation.]

Do we really need the pee-hooker tape? (LOL, hell yes!)

One day we’ll have a clear, comprehensive and condensed version of the Trump-Russia scandal, but that is certainly not today. While we could talk about the pee-hooker tape, Russian fuckery, and THE DOSSIER forever, we’ll have to settle for Frontline’s two hour crash course, and Rachel Maddow’s special report on THE DOSSIER (in six parts).

Somebody needs to cut Puerto Rico some slack.

Puerto Rico was suffering long before Hurricane Maria decimated its infrastructure. In These Times put the tiny island under a microscope and found that there were storm clouds gathering for a century. Right now, as the people of Puerto Rico continue struggle to survive in Maria’s wake, debt-collecting corporate vultures are circling, waiting to pick at the bones.

The UN flips the script on America.

While Congressional Republicans were slashing taxes for the wealthy, a UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights was touring the homeless encampment in Los Angeles commonly known as “Skid Row.” His job was to document the 41 million Americans living in poverty, from the West Coast to the Deep South, and from Appalachia to Puerto Rico. He found drug abuse, open sewage systems, and rotten teeth. At the start of his investigation he commented, “Washington is very keen for me to point out the poverty and human rights failings in other countries. This time I’m in the US.”

BONUS NICE TIME!

In January, as a constant stream of breaking news alerts left us all a jittering and over-caffeinated wreck, a premature baby hippo named Fiona was born. Fiona reminds us that the world isn’t an awful place, and sometimes the best thing in the world is a silly little animal without teeth that noms on your leg until you smile.

Anyhoo, I posted this in that article….over there. The no trump comments section challenge. Is it actually possible to talk about anything else but the bloat that consumes our democracy, for just one day?
So, in China, or at least the one part of it that I know about, there are things you do and don’t do on New Years. If you clean then what you are doing is symbolically throwing your money out the door, etc. Well, I tried this on Christmas eve but it was too late or just no one listens to me, like lalways. Is it possible that the non comment section of Wonketoria can be a trump free zone? One full day with no mention of trump in here? I’ll make the same pledge I did then, no trump in here for the full day and I’ll pony up 5o Ameros for the Wonk whore diamond and fetus fry fund. Is it something we can do?

Sad, though, that amongst all of this good work, the “liberal” media keeps rehashing the same old story lines about small-town Dumbass voters and how that lady that ran for President should just shut up and go away. It sucks all of the air out of the room and takes focus away from these other important voices.

    • miss_grundy

Every time some asshole “journalist” writes that Hillz should go away, we should counter by asking “why”? Why should she go away when every man that was defeated in a presidential campaign is still around yapping about policy and is a pundit on every news show whether on OTA broacast TV or cable TV. She has just as much right to speak her mind because she has been part of the political landscape for the last thirty years. And while she may not be “exciting” I would rather have had her in the Oval during the past year than the scam artist who lost the popular vote but got the Electoral College. Every little Gen X, Gen Y, or Millennial who says she should go away, should be spanked with the heaviest ping pong paddle painted red that you can find as a tribute to Sr. Juliana of the first parochial school that I attended back home in NYC.

Dont forget the tax cuts for the super rich also screws Puerto Rico even more. Because the GOP just cant resist screwing liberals just to give the rich more tax cuts.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-12-18/puerto-rico-suffers-from-hypocritical-tax-bill-officials-say

The Republican tax plan will erode the foundation of Puerto Rico’s most important industry and politicians who support it will pay a price at the polls, local officials said over the weekend.

A new levy aimed at companies’ income from intellectual property that’s held in offshore tax havens will also hit the bankrupt, storm-ravaged commonwealth, making it more expensive for pharmaceutical companies to manufacture their drugs there. Drug and medical-device makers have poured billions into the U.S. territory, creating thousands of jobs and driving almost a third of its economic output.

“This will be disastrous for Puerto Rico,” commonwealth Senator Jose Nadal said after the latest version of the bill was released. The measure, which includes large permanent tax cuts for companies and temporary relief for the middle class, is set to go to a vote this week.

    • TootsStansbury

Stupid question. Isn’t there something in the Constitution about using the tax code to punish one’s political enemies? There should be. And since we’re considered to be “enemies” instead of fellow citizens then why can’t we just refuse to play along?

      • sarafina

I thought so, but it’s been a long time since Obama was president so I’m not sure I remember what responsible governing looks like.

        • Snowbound Ron

it’s not uncommon to let some statutory details escape you in the first bill and to fix it with a clean up bill. it was more surprising that before the thing was actually passed they already knew a number of things that were going to be needed in the clean up which is like, “then you put it in the bill you have not yet passed, assholes!”

      • Doug Langley

B-b-but Trump showed us the way! If you want to cut taxes, you take scissors and hack red tape holding blank papers. Or something . . .

    • Sheepshagger

      Sounds a bit fringed flaggy.

    • notaten

Lol! I will laugh my ass off if true, seeing as how these guys want us to live in the 1860’s.

    • Everrett Fanuelli

      So now what happens?

      • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

they’ll pass a clean up bill to address those areas of statute.

        • sarafina

In other words, a government shutdown in the first quarter of 2018. Hope the kids formerly on CHIP stay healthy.

          • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

that’s not what a cleanup bill does. if there’s a government shutdown, it will not be because they passed the cleanup bill for the shitty tax cuts.

    • Spotts1701, Porg Wrangler

There is precedent. In 2015, a 5-4 Supreme Court ruled that Maryland’s attempt to prevent residents from receiving full credit for income earned elsewhere amounted to “double taxation” and struck down the law.

    • Kryptonian Canis

See, they were going to address that, but then they ran out of napkins.

  • Anne Of Green Bagels

always great to see when journalists use Chicago properly and in context as an example why America’s gun fetish is so fucked up.

  • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

it’s important to remember that PR was hit by both Irma and Maria.

I’d like to thank the national press corps for how well they covered Harvey and tell them to go fuck themselves for not utilizing their MOUs when it came to the Sutherland Springs shooting.

I will, as I ever have, continue to desire better reporting on our budgets at various levels of government for they are everything and understanding them means understanding just about every other area of policy.

    • jesterpunk

I really wish they would report on budgets better, all I ever see in our local rags are how bad taxes are.

      • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

but not what to do about it…am I right?

        • jesterpunk

Nope they never cover what they are doing with it.

          • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

or where other revenue streams are needed or what to cut, right?

          • jesterpunk

They are complaining about turnpike fees going up. Also complaining how unfair property taxes are.

          • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

so they would like to close the neighborhood school and make everyone travel on dirt roads! CHECK!

          • jesterpunk

Pretty much, they also are so mad that dems said the water pipes that are over 100 years old need to be replaced because of lead. Somehow anytime funding something comes up the libertarians and republicans come out to say “taxes are not fair, free market will fix everything”.

          • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

        • DrBigHead

C’mon, the answer is simple. Get rid of the waste.

          • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

so you would like to get rid of sanitation services?

          • DrBigHead

No, they are the only ones actually getting rid of the waste. And by “getting rid of”, I mean out of my sight. May end up in a floating mass in the middle of the ocean, but hell, at least it isn’t stinking up my kitchen anymore.

          • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

okay, well we can’t at the local or state level get rid of the Clean Water Act, but we can end curb side pickup. that will save you many Ameros so you can pay for gas to take your trash to the dump. we also have a fee per load you drop off.

          • DrBigHead

WAIT A MINUTE! Are you suggesting “I” pay for this?? I just want it to magically go away.

          • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

well, you said you wanted to get rid of wasteful spending. would you like to get rid of EMTs or the Fire Department?

          • DrBigHead

Hard choice. With the garbage piling up there is the chance of spontaneous combustion, so not the fire department. Then again, I might slip on some of the rapidly accumulating trash and break a hip, so not the EMTs.

Getting deep into Poe’s law here.

          • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

well, we can’t get rid of the police because their union contributes heavily to all our council members campaigns and the only services we beg for are parks and libraries. so I guess we will have to get rid of filling potholes because Gideon v. Wainwright says we can’t stop paying for indigent defense.

we could always make more traffic fines.

          • DrBigHead

NOW you’re thinking! Make them damn scofflaws pay for it. Unless of course I am late for work…

          • Bell the Blind Tiger MCD

okay. that parking ticket you got last spring that you still haven’t paid for is $10 thousand. pay up.

  • Master Contrail Program

I don’t really dive into wingnut media too much. So where is this new narrative coming from that the Almighty Trump has completely and singlehandedly destroyed ISIS? I’ve seen it pop up a lot in neutral/mainstream news comment sections here recently, including in today’s NYT “Accessibility” article.

Though it seems if anything had really been done, regardless of actual results, we’d have heard quite a few Hucksterisms and seen quite a few Unpresidented tweets about it by now.

    • Resistance Fighter Callyson

As usual, Donald is taking credit for something that took place due to Obama’s policies. Can’t wait until he blames the military when something goes wrong with his surges in Afghanistan and elsewhere FFS.

    • jesterpunk

He did twit about it but his twit makes no sense. Like how did he liberate more land from ISIS then they started with.

      https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/946201376652169220

      • Everrett Fanuelli

Yeah, but look how many fucking bombs he dropped. I’m sure he also “liberated” many civilians from their lives.

        • jesterpunk

So Presidential, Brian Williams still cant walk right after that.

          • 🍁 Girl Guide Salute 🖖🏻

Which is odd when you consider that Brian Williams was right there, reporting live from the exact spot where Trump dropped the bomb on him.

      • Master Contrail Program

Ahh, so in typical wingnut fashion when Bin Laden was killed Obama just happened to straighten his wrist out long enough to rubber stamp an order, but any gains made now are entirely due to Trump’s strong and steady leadership.

Faux said Bin Laden was thanks to Shrub.

Lazing on a Sunday afternoon. Added the fog lights to the Baja Bug … the other ones were pathetic tiny ones. So I committed the sin of adding something to the Bug just because it looks cool. I haven’t seen fog since the ’90s when I commuted the 60 through the Banning Pass in SoCal. Also, those off-road lights on top are never used, but in my defense I intended to use them at first, but now I’m old(er) and too afraid I’ll break something if I unleash the Kraken.

Second picture is what happens for lack of planning. Meaning I lost real estate on my custom dash project, and had to fit all the rest of the remaining instruments in a small space. Yeah, it’s hillbilly and proud my relatives are for the effort. The lower left holes are for the headlight switch/dimmer, currently being viced for the wood glue (I’ve said too much).

  • UGH, reading that article about R. Kelly, and knowing what I know about Trump and Weinstein, I have come to the conclusion that NDA’s should be illegal, except in very limited cases with limited duration- for instance, when someone has seen a preview and is ordered not to reveal any spoilers. NDAs should be invalidated in case of criminal activity, at any rate.

    Handegg update:

The Factory of Sadness produced an 0-16 season for the Cleveland Browns. Meanwhile, less that 2 hours after the Indianapolis Colts ended their season with a victory coach Chuck Pagano was summarily dismissed.

    • BloviateMe

And Hue Jackson will remain HC of the Browns after posting a single win in two years of football.

      • Spotts1701, Porg Wrangler

Considering what the Browns have been doing the last 2 years would barely qualify as “football”…

      • Everrett Fanuelli

Probably because nobody else wants that HC job.

        • BloviateMe

          The Browns once fired Belichick.

Yeah–I felt kind of bad rooting for my team today. I wish that record had gone to the criminals in Cincinnati instead.

As for the Colts, I don’t follow that team closely enough to know if that was a justified firing or not, but I hope Pagano ends up OK somewhere else.

And–dafuq is going on with the Rams right now? They don’t look like a playoff-bound tea, at the moment FFS.

      • BloviateMe

        Rams sat their starters.

And Pagano sort of reminds me of Fisher, just not a solid winning HC, me thinks.

      • Spotts1701, Porg Wrangler

Wheels fell off – Luck got hurt, the team went 4-12, and even when they were good under Pagano they didn’t get over the hump. 33-15 in his first three years, 20-28 his last three.

      • Everrett Fanuelli

Rams have no reason to play their starters. Winning the game won’t change their standing.

When things are a little calmer, take a look around to see if any of the civil rights groups in your area have filed lawsuits against any government entities regarding how traffic fines disproportionately punish poor and working folks due to license suspensions (which inevitably result in additional traffic fines cuz’ they HAVE to drive). This is getting a lot of legal attention nationwide and class action suits have been filed. There is a bill pending in CA to stop this vicious cycle. One municipality I read about was even offering a sort-of amnesty program. SPLC just reached an agreement in Mississippi to stop the license suspension practices permanently for failure to pay traffic tickets or fines.

Chicago’s not so bad. Reelly. Except it’s colder than a well-digger’s willie lately.

So long as you don’t have to go in any of the half-dozen war-zone ‘hoods (i don’t, and yes, I am grateful), you’re pretty much as safe from random gun death here as you could be in any major American city. Maybe that’s not saying much. The Las Vegas slaughter-man scoped out a suite overlooking Lollapalooza before choosing Sin City to make his statement. Don’t know why we didn’t make the final cut, but I’m grateful for that, too.

As for the war zones, just about the only white people in them are the cops. Maybe that’s a clue. Could good gummint make a diff? Fuck all, I dunno. I’m a recent immigrant to this suburb of the North Pole (it’s FUCKING COLD OUT!). I don’t know the political ins and out and ways and means of this Fog-footed, Big-shouldered, Slaughterhouse to the World, other than some nebulous info I’ve picked up about how you have to have to have “clout” with “the machine.” Some do and most don’t. Same as it ever was.

Srsly, the only answers I can see to the gun violence are not the new ones. End the Drug War. Fund the public schools and the teachers with the amounts of money the public schools and teachers have never received in this misguided country. Provide incentives for businesses to locate in and do business in the neighborhoods that have been gutted by the loss of manufacturing jobs and the workers who worked those jobs.

All this would take government guidance, at least in terms of tax policy. Don’t know how that’s likely to happen. Chicago, Cook County, and Illinois are all three broke and broken. The federals aren’t going to do diddly squat with the Goppers in control of Congress and Trump in the White House. He hates Chicago because it’s the home of the Obamas, and because when he tried to bring his dog and pony show here during the 2016 primaries, we ran him out of town (no shit, you can look it up). The Goppers could care less because a substantial part of Chicago’s population is people who are not Caucasian, and that is not the Goppers base.

I didn’t mean to go on like this, all serious and wonky and all, it being a party night. But there it is. We have problems here that we could fix. Theoretically. We could make a big positive difference if we could just do it. Instead, we piss and moan and wring our hands and clutch our pearls and avert our gaze, and in the end, the inner-city shit show is just another form of American entertainment. Same as our mass gun-slaughters and our drone strikes and our African wars (What? We have wars in Africa?) and our twitter-headed president and his cabinet of grifters and our economic mismanagement and environmental shenanigans and militarized police — just one show after another.

All right. I’ll stop. I’ll go have something to eat and drink. Lucky me, I can do that.

    Happy New Year, dammit!

    • Bitter Scribe

Another big problem is that the governor of Illinois is a rich nitwit whose idea of governing is making demands and calling the people who refuse them corrupt. Like most Republicans, he’s all about 50 percent plus one, so he tries to turn the different parts of the state against each other, and against Chicago particularly.

The Democrats will be gunning for him next year, but his major opponents are two other rich guys, one a Kennedy (does anyone give a shit about the Kennedys anymore?). Apparently you can’t be governor unless you’re rich.

      • Tetman Callis

Sux sometimes to be a Demo up here. Chicago’s so not like the rest of Illinois, being a big blue carbuncle on the shoulder of a reddish state. And as for next year’s governor’s race, yeah, the Democratic front-runners — already they have front-runners and have had for months — are a Kennedy and a billionaire. The billionaire seems a decent guy, for a billionaire, from a family of other what look to be decent billionaires, but jesus, man — billionaires. Something about “Democratic billionaire” gets stuck in the craw.

        • House0fTheBlueLights

They’re only the front runners because media want them to be. There’s an amazing guy running for Governor. He’s seriously Barack in a white skin suit. Daniel Biss is another one of those amazing Illinois politicians, like Paul Simon, Adlai, Obama, who somehow manage to come out of the swamp untainted. We showed them in Alabama that we don’t have to elect the anointed ones. Let’s do it here too, and put Daniel Biss in the State House.

    • House0fTheBlueLights

      Please run for mayor.

  • Zyxomma

Thanks, Dominic. Happy New Year to you and yours.

  • Bebecca

And this is why we need to subscribe to news organizations and pay them money. The media is at least equal to law enforcement in investigating and exposing corruption but they don’t receive government funding.
