Let’s play a game. Let’s pretend that you are an African-American woman, a high-achieving woman respected by her party, and from the state of Alabama. Let’s pretend that when you were eight-years old, your friend was one of four young girls around your own age murdered in a church bombing perpetrated by the Ku Klux Klan.

Now let’s say people are asking for your opinion on whether they ought to vote for the man who prosecuted those KKK members who murdered your childhood friend, or an accused child molester who thinks things were real swell for America when slavery was legal, and isn’t all too sure that any constitutional amendments after the 10th (like the ones that outlawed slavery and gave you the right to vote) are really all that necessary.

Is this a hard decision for you? Does this strike you as a good time to be particularly wishy-washy? Well, if it is and if it does, you just might be Condoleeza Rice.

Rather than coming out and endorsing Jones (who, again, sent the people who murdered her friend to prison), AL.com reports that Rice said:

“This week’s special election will be one of the most significant in Alabama’s history. As a native daughter, I remain – at heart – an Alabaman who loves our state and its devotion to faith, family, and country,” Rice stated.

The statement continued:

“I encourage you to take a stand for our core principles and for what is right. These critical times require us to come together to reject bigotry, sexism, and intolerance.

“It is imperative for Americans to remain focused on our priorities and not give way to side shows and antics. I know that Alabamans need an independent voice in Washington. But we must also insist that our representatives are dignified, decent, and respectful of the values we hold dear.

“Please exercise your right to vote – a privilege won by the sacrifices of our ancestors. Sustain the central ideals and values that make our country a beacon for freedom and justice for the sake of Alabama and for the good of the United States of America.”

DOUG JONES, CONDI, SAY DOUG JONES. It is not hard! It is two whole syllables! You can do it! You all but said “Hey, don’t vote for the racist, sexist bigot” — by which you very clearly meant “Hey, don’t vote for Roy Moore, the candidate in this race who is a racist, sexist bigot” — but for some reason you couldn’t bring the words out of your mouth to state it frankly. That is some weak tea, Condi.

This guy helped write a book that said women were not fit for public office. He has said that the last time America was great when we had slavery. At the very least, could you know when you have been insulted?

This is not the time for subtlety. It is not the time for partisanship. It is not the time for fear. What are they gonna do to you, Condi? Do you have future political plans that you fear could be hindered by coming out a little too strongly against a guy who got banned from the mall for trawling for teenage girls? What are you afraid of, Condi Rice? Aren’t you a little old to be this afraid to take a stand on a choice this obvious? Shouldn’t you be at the “out of fucks” stage of life at this point? Because I’m a lot younger than you are, and I hit it years ago.

He, his family, and his party are lower than shit, and their voters are looking up at them.

  • canes_pugnaces

Condi couldn’t quite believe there weren’t WMD stuck down Saddam’s pants, either. So she lied. Besides, everyone knows a child rapist is much better than a liberal.

  • msanthropesmr

GOP party of the weak will.

  • wide_stance_hubby

Poor Condi. She just can’t decide which she likes best, eating shit or swallowing.

  • Anna Rompage

Condi would rather soft peddle some vague message about doing the right thing, rather than come out and condemn a child molesting pedophile that would like to see the states be able to bring the good old ways of slavery back to this disgraced country of ours….

First they came for those folks, and I didn’t speak out…

  • La Cieca

Condi plans to write in Jill Stein to register her disgust with the system.

    • BreakingDeadMen

She seems more the “Evan McMullin” type. Or whatever that fuck’s name was.

      • BMW

Was it McLuvin? (No first name.)

Say what you will about Rice, but she IS NOT an item on the McDonald’s dollar menu.

          McRice would be an abomination.

  • Martini Ambassador 🍸

That’s Condi’s thing, slow and methodical calculation of the risk/rewards. I mean, let’s not rush to judgement. Just because you are handed a briefing indicating “Bin Laden determined to attack,” doesn’t mean there’s any urgency.

    • eyelashviper

Bingo! Though some try to polish her image in later years, I find her still contemptible, as she supported and condoned the horrific actions of Dubya and Cheney.
For her to hedge on this issue is more indication of who she is, and it is not very positive.

  • calliecallie

    She wants her tax cuts.

  • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

What are they gonna do to you, Condi? Do you have future political plans that you fear could be hindered by coming out a little too strongly against a guy who got banned from the mall for trawling for teenage girls?

I remember a couple years ago a few Republicans saying she could run for President and I thought “yes, because this Republican party would vote for a black woman over a white man.”

    • Wookie Monster

Well, she definitely could run and republicans would squeal, “see how diverse we are? We a black woman running for president.”

And then vote for a rich white guy.

Just like last year, when republicans would brag about having a black man, a woman, and two Hispanics in the primary, none of whom came close to winning.

      • Historicat

ust like last year, when republicans would brag about having a black man, a woman, and two Hispanics in the primary, none of whom came close to winning.

But to be fair, none of those people came close to the level of hatred of the ignorant rage-bully they went with in the end.

        • Wookie Monster

That’s why he won out of all the other rich white men in the race.

  • ArgieBargie

Silly Condi…just like your former boss, Alabamians don’t do nuance!

    • MynameisBlarney

      Because “nuance” sounds too French!

The closest she’s ever come to making any kind of strong stance about any non GOP candidate was AFTER Obama was elected and she tearfully smiled and said (paraphrasing) that it was a historic day for our country. And even that was like… Ok… Um, thanks?

    • Maybe

The day Trump was elected was also an historic day for our country.

Historic days do not have to be good days.

  • Wookie Monster

Maybe she’s afraid they’ll rename her oil tanker if she endorsed a democrat.

  • Daniel

“It is imperative for Americans to remain focused on our priorities and not give way to side shows and antics.”

First- now “credible accusations of child molestation” are “side shows and antics”.

Second – let’s look at how Moore’s beliefs and positions contradict the role of United States Senator:

    1) he has declared the time when America was last great was when slavery still existed. His supporters have since claimed he has been taken out of context, ignoring
that in the quote it was he and not his questioner who brought up slavery. They also argue that he meant because families were stronger then, ignoring that for the enslaved population their families could be and very often were split up by their “owners” who sold them to other people, breaking those families up on a whim. They also ignore that for the slave population, marriage and family were no protection against rape and assault by their masters.

    2) he has co-authored a book stating women have no business in elected office or in any positions of power. He argues this because he believes the Bible tells him this is
what God wants. This, if it influenced his policy making (and we have reason to believe it would) is a clear breach of the establishment clause of the first amendment.

    3) speaking of the first amendment- he has displayed a two ton monument of the ten commandments in his court room, clearly establishing a connexion between his religious faith- which he claims takes priority over the law- and the law he’s supposed to have upheld.

    4) it has been argued by his defenders this shows his commitment to religious freedom. However, Moore also openly states that he doesn’t believe Muslims should be allowed to serve in congress and has spread scare stories about sharia law being instituted in the United States a claim which is not only untrue but, more pertinently to his defenders’ argument in favour of his ten commandments monument, shows that he does not support religious freedom as Sharia Law only applies to Muslims- i.e. people who choose, because of their faith, to observe it.

    5) he has declared that he will not uphold the law where it grants equal rights to same sex couples to get married. He did this while a judge- the second time, before he was again removed for refusing to actually uphold the law.

    6) Moore has declared he’d scrap every amendment to the constitution after the tenth. This would remove the right for women to vote, for black people to vote, the abolishing of slavery, the right to equal protection under the law, and others I’m forgetting. His defenders have argued this is because he wants the states’ governments to decide and institute these things rather than the federal government.
However, it’s interesting to note that as well as violating the first amendment as a judge he doesn’t really take any post-10 amendments seriously as an aspirant senator. It’s also interesting that despite his denials of racism and sexism he is opposed to federally mandated rights for black people to have equal protection under the law, and for black people and all women’s suffrage.

While his child molestation rests on the accusations of numerous women, and his own shifting and often contradictory “denials”, Moore’s proven record demonstrates he is
    entirely unsuited to elected office.

    • Maybe

What fun for McConnell if this guy wins.

      • Toomush_Inferesistance

        McTurtle just counts votes…

        • Maybe

I’m not sure he could count on Moore’s. Moore hates McConnell. I can see Moore taking great pleasure in casting a vote to kill a bill McConnell wants passed.

Moore is not a supporter of the current tax bill. He wants what is erroneously called the “Fair Tax.” It would tax spending only. Investment profit would not be taxed. Nice if you have investments. Note that it also favors imports.

“The Fair Tax Plan is a sales tax proposal to replace the current U.S. income tax structure. It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes and all taxes on gifts, estates, capital gains, alternative minimums, Social Security, Medicare and self-employment. It replaces them with a federal retail sales tax of 23 percent to be administered by existing state sales tax authorities. The sales tax would not apply to imports, commodities used to produce other products or used goods.

The Fair Tax would require the repeal of the 16th Amendment. It would disband and defund the Internal Revenue Service.”

      • Villago Delenda Est

There are quite a few knuckle-dragging twits out there who don’t get that the Democratic Party underwent a major change in the 60’s…that the racists fled it in droves and found a new happy home in the GOP.

Condi was a Democrat at one time and worked with Jimmy Carter. She thought he was “weak,” and changed her party affiliation. She totally supported the Bush/Cheney war on Iraq. I’m not surprised by her “subtlety” and long past being disappointed by her. I do admire her for being a survivor, being ambitious, and getting the hell out of Alabama. Although it was more her parents who did that last thing. They moved away after the church bombing.

    • atheist

I’m sure she would’ve thought Jesus was “weak”

      • nightmoth

Yes. I fear you are right. Perhaps being exposed to violent racism in her earliest years made her a hawk instead of a dove. I don’t know.

The only way the establishment can get their party back is to excise the cancer. It is going to hurt.

Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act knowing that the Dems would lose big with Southern whites for generations to come. Nixon knew this too and came up with the Southern Strategy. The Repubs lapped it up, thinking they were in control. Dr. Frankenstein thought the same until the monster took over.

Repubs are going to need to come out and vote Dem in elections where the Repub candidate is a disgrace. They are going to need to say what they are doing and why, very loudly. The Alt-right base is not going to like it.

But if the Repubs let the Alt-Right continue to gain power they will lose their party entirely. Long-term we need a two party system. Right now the GOP is unbalanced and needs to fix that.

Moore is a cancer. Trump is a cancer. Nazi support of the GOP is a cancer. It’s surgery time.

    • Jeffocaster in the East

You are right but it will never happen. FUCK THEM ALL.

      • little miss high and mighty

        yes it (we) can.

      • Maybe

If it doesn’t then the cancer will kill the GOP. We’ll know when that happens ’cause Trump will put his name on it.

        In gilt. Also guilt.

    • bbayliss

      The cancer metastasized long ago:
      Lee Atwater: On the southern strategy;
You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger.”
      https://www.thenation.com/article/exclusive-lee-atwaters-infamous-1981-interview-southern-strategy/

      • Maybe

I don’t disagree. Maybe the cancer has spread so far that it can’t be treated. The election in Alabama certainly supports that.

Hatred has become a central tenet of conservatism ever since conservatism became little more than “government needs to stop helping all those [insert hated group] that don’t deserve it, and neglecting the whites who made this country great.”

      • Maybe

Hatred is key, especially to rile up the base. But a lot of the guys on top really only care about money, especially short-term profits. They may us hate, but they don’t feel much of anything.

“This week’s special election will be one of the most significant in Alabama’s history. As a native daughter, I remain – at heart – an Alabaman who loves our state and its devotion to faith, family, and country,” Rice stated.

She’s from Alabama and can’t say Alabamian? No wonder she so easily forgot her murdered friend.

      • Maybe

Oops. I thought it was “Alabaman.” But I was born and raised in California.

        Thanks for the info.

    • Clark_Nova

Long-term we need a 4 party system. Getting there from here is the problem.

      • Maybe

I’m not sure that would work better, though I only have experience of ours. Multiple party systems require parties to form coalitions and that can require some unsavory deal-making. It also obscures responsibility to some extent.

Right now we almost seem to have a 3 party system (two Repub parties) and it’s horrible. The coalition between the mainstream Repubs and the Trumpsters is just nasty. The mainstreamers support Trump because they think they can use him.

Having a 2 party system would work much better if we could find a way to get the special interest money out of our politics. At least two Repubs senators have admitted that their “tax reform” bill is really just being written to please their big donors.

She’s an only child and her parents protected her a lot. After the church bombing, they left Alabama. I lived in Birmingham in 1969-70 and there was a privileged black class there, who had little to do with the poor blacks. But Alabama was so racist that it would have taken a thicker head than Condi has to be immune to it. I think she found a nice lifeboat and doesn’t want to rock it.

Meh. It never felt right going after Condi too hard even during Bush II’s Reign of Error. I say that not because of her identity but because of some personal quality that’s hard to describe. Yes she helped wield power in destructive ways. But it’s a paradox. She was in love with GWB. (Remember when she accidentally referred to him as “my husband”? I just don’t detect anything nefarious about this woman. She seems like a fairly sweet person in fact.

Misguided? Yes. A bit. A lot. But that’s it.

Complicit. “There was just something about a woman of color being in the repuke party” misses that many of us were raised by Black Republican parents and grandparents. Why? Because, like my grandfather, when they wanted to get involved in politics, the Democrats were Dixiecrats. This all changed after 1964 (I was 2).
A better statement is “There was just something about a woman of color still being in the repuke party”. 97% of black women voted for Hillary Clinton.

I guess though, all things considered, I’m a little surprised that what she said wasn’t worse. But honestly I almost shared this until I thought: you know what, fucking Condi who’s even gonna care.

    • Ω cynmac’s reclaiming her time

To see Charles Barkley actively campaigning for Jones, leading cheers at that last rally, was good enough for me.

  • chicken thief

“Aw fuck I done planned to vote for the Judge Moore fella – he knows how to tell War-shington what for, but then Condi done hinted I might as well vote for the Schumer-Pelosi led baby killer so what could a man do? I voted for Jones is what I done,” said no Alabaman ever.

  • Darkrose

Thirty years ago, at freshman orientation at Stanford, I went to a Black Student Union dinner featuring Condoleezza Rice.

I wish I could go back in time and punch her. With votes, of course.

  • Bitter Scribe

    Mealymouthed mush.

  • chicken thief

Jesus Christ , Condi, even fucking Tim “T-Paw zzzzzzzz” Pawlinty gave a more spirited, less vague statement against Moore.

  • Alan

Wow. Is she planning to run for office?

    • Teto85

Her girl friend would rather she not.

  • Non-Threatening Ron

Presidential run, perhaps? Doesn’t want to risk offending potential Nazis voters?

  • Daniel Hooper

I was reading an article on another site saying that basically said Doug Jones is leaning too hard on his KKK prosecution, and that it probably means he has nothing else to offer black voters. Not that they’d vote for Moore, but that they’d probably stay home.

Does anybody else think that writer is a bit of an idiot? While I agree a single accomplishment shouldn’t carry a lifetime of good will, it is a pretty big accomplishment to me to successfully prosecute the KKK in the 60’s, and unless he’s got his own white hooded robes in his closet, especially compared to the alternative that is Moore… is it really that hard a choice?

    • Ω cynmac’s reclaiming her time

That writer is incredibly st00pid. Can you share a link?

      • SDGeoff3

        Daily Kos?

      • Daniel Hooper

Sorry; I remember reading it on The Root, but it was a couple of weeks ago and I can’t remember the article title.

        • Ω cynmac’s reclaiming her time

          That’s ok.

    • SDGeoff3

I have a feeling Mr. Jones is in a better position than an arm chair quarterback to choose what his strategy needs to be.

    • Amy!

Note that the prosecution did not happen in the sixties. Since it was murder, there’s no statute of limitations. The murders were in 1963; the case was reopened in 1998.

      • Daniel Hooper

That I was unaware of, though I guess it makes sense. Jones would be way too old to effectively run for office now if the prosecution was in the 60’s. Still nothing to sneeze at, though, especially compared to his opponent.

        • Amy!

Agreed entirely. And while it isn’t the picture of fearlessness that you originally thought of, a prosecutor in an openly racist and violent society determined to convict the perpetrators of the latest outrage, it’s something perhaps equally admirable: a picture of a relentless prosecutor in an openly racist and quietly vicious society, determined to convict the perpetrators of a notorious outrage who thought that they had gotten away clean and couldn’t be touched. He made the point that even after the passage of time, some evil must be exposed, opposed, and its perpetrators disposed of.

    • Mehmeisterjr

Well now, to be fair, it is unfair to focus on that one itty-bitty little issue (murdering little girls in an arson fire is wrong) when there are so many other issues upon which honest people of good faith may reasonably disagree, such as:

      Is raping little girls wrong?

      Is slavery wrong?

Should creepy old pervs be allowed to hang around the mall and hit on little girls?

    • They were pulling this crap on morning edition this AM – including finding a black democrat to bitch about doug jones talking too much about the KKK.

      Made me stabby all day.

      • Clark_Nova

NPR fell to the Repugs a decade ago.

    • mfp, all 6s&7s&9s

yes, that writer is A Idiot

  • gratuitous

I wonder what Secretary Rice’s friend would say, were that friend still alive and here to speak to her? “A profile in courage you ain’t, girl.”

  • Talis

Counting on right-wingers to do the right thing is a lost cause if you haven’t noticed. They are on a different planet than the rest of us. There are plenty of people who are not right-wingers who the Democratic apparatus must start to appeal to in order for us to have any chance whatsoever of turning back this fascist tidal wave. Rice is not one of those that will help.
    Every single conservative is complicit.

  • Mehmeisterjr

Her super-secret, off-the-record (except when she accidentally blabbed about it) marriage to Dubya has turned her into an honorary entitled person and thus immune from logic and decency.

  • Impatient

So nice to see that “Because … Benghazi!” has finally been displaced. Getting right down to brass tacks, now:

    “Because … Republican!”

  • Resistor Radio

    Oh Condi.

  • redarmyzombie

    God, what a fucking coward.

  • guest1331now

Condi has always been conflicted. We watched her twitching one Sunday morning in the mid-2000s, insisting (for W Bush) that the situation in Iraq was under control, but hating having to say it — hence the twitching. She should just come all the way over to the right side of the Force.

  • bubbuhh

When one shat out of her mouth the whole time Dubya was Preznit, mostly shitting out of her mouth while Trump is Preznit isn’t much different.

  • irishdave3

Say the name Skeezy, say the name?

  • Angela Ruzzo

I am not going to repeat what my African American coworker once said about Condoleeza, because it is pejorative, and therefore not suitable language for Wonkette.

    • HarpyLibtart

As a fellow African American I’ll say it for you – fuck that trash panda and all her spineless, shuck n’ jiving works…Traction alopecia never afflicted a more deserving woman.
She is formally DIS-invited to the cookout and we pray that her edges are forever ragged.

      • Angela Ruzzo

Thanks. That’s pretty close to what my coworker said, but as we were at work, she didn’t say “fuck.”

  • Christopher Smith

    Unindicted war criminal says what?

  • mfp, all 6s&7s&9s

anyone surprised by the level of integrity and courage displayed by ms rice on this one?…yeah, me neither…move along folks, nothing to see here

  • Mike Steele

Lady MS: Condi was in line (allegedly) for that sweet, sweet bucket of warm spit that is known as the vice-presidency, had Christo-fascist Mike Pence tossed Trump after the pussy-grabbin’ tape…’cept he didn’t have the cajones to do it. Now that we can actually witness Pence gazing at Trump with that long-suffering, beatific smirk (which translates to ‘when are you going to jesus, you hump?’), perhaps she still hopes to have a shot @ #2.

    • Bebecca

I would think she would be thanking her lucky stars she avoided that toxic, career-ending situation.

      • Clark_Nova

She should be thankful that she avoided Federal Supermax.

  • dshwa

Condi is, and always has been, spinally deficient.

In her defense, black female conservative requires suppressing a lot of cognitive dissonance, which causes massive spinal erosion.

    • Clark_Nova

      Invertebrate-American

  • WhoCheckedRussia’sVoterID

Sorry. Condi is as complicit by her silence as anyone in the trump regime. I don’t care what your political stripe is. If you are silent when your voice carries such weight, you are part of the problem…

I’m glad she at least said something. The trouble is most of the right wing Alabamians can’t read, let alone read between the lines. Had only grudging respect for her during the Bush admin. Mainly because a single brain in a sea of stupid is at least one brain. That she can’t be clearer and more unequivocal in the face of such a horrible person like moore I find kind of nauseating.

    • Bangkok Taxi

She specifically stayed away from making it personal.
Yeah, at least she lent her voice. She knows no matter what is said, it won’t change anyone hardcore supporters, but could possibly distract from the issue.

      • WhoCheckedRussia’sVoterID

Not about making it personal and not about changing hard core supporters. It’s about changing fence sitters who are too spineless to make the call on their own. Keeping quiet is the poison. A loud voice of reason is the antidote.

        • Bangkok Taxi

I can see her tact though. For someone heavily identified with Moore, her style of issues based appeal would allow them a place to stand, internally, if they chose to not vote for Moore.

          • WhoCheckedRussia’sVoterID

            That’s a good point.

  • Begin Anew Day

“That is some weak tea, Condi.”

You, Ms Robyn, are too kind!

THAT is NOT what I am looking for at Wonkette!

  • ibwilliamsi

Condi Rice has always been in it for Condi Rice.

  • Zen Diesel

If it was me it would be a no brainer, hell yeah I would endorse. This should have been a slam dunk for her.

  • CATMAN

I have despised Condi ever since she went before the 9/11 commission and said that they dismissed the warnings by Richard Clarke because “he did not say that the attack would be on that specific day”, an act of heinous ass-covering like I had not ever seen before

  • Clark_Nova

    Christ! What an Aunt Jemima.

  • Clark_Nova

Is Trump jerking himself off with his thumbs in that picture?

  • Gary Teves

Why bother to make a statement at all? And who would really care who she would endorse, anyway? She’s been washed up for years. Even the Republicans want to forget GWB was President.

  • Jo Mathie

“require us to come together to reject bigotry, sexism, and intolerance.”
Don’t vote for Roy moore who represents all of these things. How hard could it have been to say that?

  • little miss high and mighty

    Jones wins!
    least wayze looks that way
    JONES WINS!

  • Petunia Cat

    Truly pathetic of her.
She may be worried that some of those corporate board she sits on would find her uppity. If she came out against a pedophile. 🤦🏻‍♀️

  • FZsdaughter

I always despised her as a member of the Dubya league of cowards and thugs. It’s sad that she is such a capitulator, but not surprising. Equivocation hath undone her.

  • susan_g

It amazes me to see former members of Dubya’s cabal now coming out in the media, presented as icons of character, truth, and knowledge. These people lied us into war. They should be testifying before the International Criminal Court, not opining in interviews or anywhere else.

  • James Lamere

Why does Wonkette give this war criminal any attention at all ?

  • Salvatore Napoli

Well, she still has her Augusta National membership, and will play Chopin for you (if you provide the sheet music).

  • Monty Market

As an intellectual woman of color, it’s much harder to rise through Democratic ranks, where there is plenty of competition from similarly situated, than to be a drumpf repug where there is little if any competition because others, unlike Condy, are unwilling to sell their souls for high position.

  • Jado

It’s easy for you to give advice about endorsing Doug Jones; you are not a Republican.

She lost the part of her that sees right and wrong during her time under Shrub. The only thing she sees now is R and D.

    • chronozoan

It was Monica Goodling who coined the term “LOYAL BUSHIES”. I truly feel that phrase perfectly articulates the level of infantilism present in that White House.

  • David Shaw

You mean Condoleezza “Mushroom Cloud” Rice?

  • No courage of her convictions, which means she’s dead to me.

  • AKGrrl

Condi hasn’t quite gotten out of moral bankruptcy court yet I see.

  • Damian L

    Gee what a surprise.

  • toughsister

I dearly wish Rice converted to catholicism, entered the Carmelite order, disappeared behind the walls of a convent and was never heard of again.

  • chronozoan

“MARS ATTACKS! is not lame. It’s Awesome.”
