DAMMIT! Look, we know nobody’s perfect. But is every man over 60 a disgusting pervert? Will we eventually learn that everyone’s dad was a habitual ass-grabber who skeeved on women at the office? Did they all do it because they knew they could? (And if yes, can we stop crapping on the millennials, please!)

After yet another woman came forward to accuse Senator Al Franken of sexual harassment, Democratic women Senators led the charge calling for his resignation. Even a few male colleagues figured out that Democrats probably shouldn’t have a groping pervert in the caucus, so HOORAY, NOT ALL MEN! Or something. Franken is scheduled to hold a press conference tomorrow where he will likely resign, leaving Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Mark Dayton to fill the seat for the remainder of Franken’s term. We are beyond disgusted, and your Five Dollar Feminist would re-circumcise him herself if she could. (Such a shandah!)

And speaking of men who let down the whole team, John Conyers resigned from the House of Representatives after weeks of stories about sexual harassment going back decades. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus are furious that the 88-year-old civil rights icon was pushed out while gropey Al Franken is still in the Senate, at least until tomorrow. Via Politico,

“Certainly it seems as if there is indeed a double standard,” said Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), who was involved in Conyers’ retirement negotiations last week before [Rep. Sheila] Jackson Lee and Monica Conyers derailed them. “When it happens to one of us, we’re guilty until proven innocent. They’re just finally starting to talk about Blake Farenthold, who is a member sitting here who paid out $84,000.”

Fair enough. Far be it from Your Wonkette to deny the existence of structural racism. Congressman Footie Pajamas is indeed a gross, white dude. But more importantly, abusing women is a feature not a bug in today’s GOP, so Farenthold is likely to get away with being a disgusting pervo monster. And while we would never compare an asshole like Farenthold to Conyers, who actually made the world a better place, Conyers also paid a settlement and faces multiple, credible accusers.

The Conyers family hasn’t exactly covered themselves in glory on the way out the door, either. With Conyers hospitalized, his wife Monica Conyers and Rep. Jackson Lee have been negotiating his exit strategy. Last week they put the kibosh on a planned resignation announcement, giving Conyers time to endorse his son John Conyers III as a replacement on Tuesday. Conyers’s great-nephew Ian Conyers, a Michigan state senator, is also staking his claim to the seat, according to WaPo.

“I said, ‘Sir, if you decide that you’re going to retire, give me a heads-up because I’m going to run for your seat and keep doing the work that you have been up to,’” Ian Conyers said. “He said, ‘Absolutely. You go for it. Run.’”

On top of apparent machinations to shoehorn her son into Congress by Mrs. Conyers, who spent two years in jail for taking a bribe as a Detroit councilwoman, Michigan voters are facing the prospect of two members of the Conyers family claiming to be the heir apparent. Which is unseemly, to say the very least.

The whole thing just makes us sad. Sad for all the women Conyers harassed. Sad that a guy who spent 50 years in Congress fighting for civil rights would ruin his legacy by being such a creep. Sad that Conyers couldn’t live up to the expectations of people who loved and revered him. And sad that we’re stuck with a serial harasser in the White House while Republicans make a big show of tut-tutting over a child molester they will embrace with open arms into the Senate next week.

FUCKING HELL.

Well, that was fun! Click here to support us and maybe we can find a nicetimes story for later!

And How’s Your Day, Mr. President?

    well, speaking of which:

Palestinians took to the streets on Wednesday to protest U.S. President Donald Trump’s highly controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to the contested city.

People in Gaza City and the city of Rafah chanted “Death to America,” “death to Israel” and “down with Trump.” They burned American and Israeli flags as well as photos of Trump, who alerted world leaders of the decision on Tuesday and formally announced the news Wednesday afternoon.

In fairness, huge bipartisan majorities in Congress have been calling for this since 1995. That’s why the prior presidents had to sign “waivers” every 6 months. He merely did what the representatives of the people have demanded, over and over again, for over 20 years now.

You’re not going to find many (any?) Congressmen or Senators complaining about it.

I like how the party that claims to represent morals and family values keeps supporting even the most vile, evil people if they happen to be one of them. It’s almost like they have no morals or values at all, and think even child molestation or supporting actual Nazis are OK as long as you’re on the right side, while many Democrats actually care about doing the right thing and will kick out an otherwise good politician if we find out they committed even much lesser evil acts.

    • TJ Barke

      It’s the damnedest thing.

    • ArgieBargie

There is no “moral high ground” to take when the other party doesn’t have any fucking morals to begin with. No wonder why Republicans just keep on winning every goddam office in the country.

      • coozledad

    • schmannity

Still, it sets up 2018 as a clean play between the Pedophile/Sexual Battery Party and the Zero Tolerance Party and a potential wave election.

      • Dudleydidwrong

But the P/S Battery Party wins by running a pedophile asshole like Moore over a decent guy like Doug Jones I don’t see “clean play” as part of the equation. We can clean house but they win with shit piles like Trump, Fahrenhold, and Moore. What country? This is a house of mirrors inside of a poorly-run asylum.

        Yes, I am depressed.

        • schmannity

You have to do the next right thing. Democrats can’t control which horrible the GOP is going to run, but you can’t run on a double standard. Is there a difference between Moore’s underage sex stalking and harassment of an adult woman by Conyers? I have handled many sex discrimination and harassment claims and I never had a client say that it was OK because they were over 18.

      • ArgieBargie

That’s what we keep telling ourselves, yet Republicans keep on winning elections while Democtrats only have “moral victories” to show for.

        • schmannity

Because Democrats don’t run everywhere. The GOP will not be capturing Conyers’ seat.

        • Dept. of Space Tacos

Virginia is incredibly gerrymandered and the democrats won there anyways.

      • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Republican women are voting for Moore, and they voted for Trump. Fifty two percent of white women voted for Trump, and they’ll vote for him again if he runs.

        • Gee, Your Hair Smells Horrific

That probably depends a lot on who runs against him, if he is still in office by then. I doubt he would get the same support, as Hillary was historically unpopular then, and Trump has lost a lot of middle-ground support. Only his base has stuck with him.

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Eighty percent of Republicans approve of the job Trump’s doing. If Bernie decides to run as an Independent, Trump would win in a landslide.

          • Gee, Your Hair Smells Horrific

I haven’t heard that’s something Bernie’s planning on doing. Have you?

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

I wouldn’t put it past him.

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Mark Cuban is considering a run, I think as a Republican, so he’ll probably siphon off Democrats, while the drooling idiots re-elect Trump.

          • Gee, Your Hair Smells Horrific

If Mark Cuban runs as a Republican, he would need to win the nomination to syphon off democrats, which means Trump would be out of the picture.
I just don’t see Trump getting re-elected if he isn’t impeached before then—he squeaked through on an EC win and now has historically low approval numbers. Sure, he won’t lose his 30% of Fox-watching mouth-breathers, but that’s hardly any reason to assume he wins again. Most voters who decided to give him a chance probably regret it by now.

      • MC Planck

A majority of white women voted for Trump.

If you think a gender is the key to saving society, we’ve already lost.

        • Gee, Your Hair Smells Horrific

I’ve seen a bunch of stories in the media about women who have never run for office before deciding to run after 2016, so it’s not just as voters, but as candidates as well.
As far as voters go, see Virginia.
I have high hopes for women next year, not because women are any better than men, but because a congress that better reflects the diversity of our population will probably create more just laws.
But yeah, alternatively, fuck it: TRUMP IS INVINCIBLE. WHITE WOMEN LOVE HIM.

          • MC Planck

For the record: I think it would be fantastic if there were %50 women in Congress.

However, my point was that women are not _better_ than men. White women did not turn out for the white woman; I don’t know why you think they will vote substantially differently in the next election.

          • Gee, Your Hair Smells Horrific

Because Hillary was historically unpopular; because Trump has lost a lot of support; because female voters and candidates seem energized.

      Call Tom Perez

  • Electric Ukulele Land

A social revolution that claims the scalps of an 88 year old civil rights icon and (potentially) a progressive and seemingly genuinely apologetic Senator from Minnesota for comparatively minor offenses while leaving a remorseless and truly vile President in office as well as (quite probably) being ineffectual at keeping a sexual predator from being elected to the Senate in Alabama does not seem to be nearly as effective as one might hope.

    • Machnethylsteinerbincolabird

Well look at its slogans… #metoo and #believewomen… the first invites people to pile on or feel left out; the second dares you to question anything or demand any proof.

      • Dept. of Space Tacos

I don’t think that’s what EITHER of those statements are implying – but I’ll let our Wonkette female friends address that.

        • BosGrl

There often isn’t any proof. When something like that happens, you can barely even admit to yourself that it occurred. Then you tell people and they either don’t believe you or tell you you’re making too much of it. There are few women who would put themselves through that

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

I was going to clarify that I was just talking about those two statements and that person’s characterization, but I DID say I would defer to our lady friends.

            : D

          • BosGrl

Oh, that wasn’t directed at you!!

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

            ah my bad!

We cool, Bos, we ALWAYS cool…

          • BosGrl

            Always!

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

is it fucking cold as hell in boston? cause it’s cold and drizzly here in the desert.

          • BosGrl

I went out with just a thin jacket this morning and I was instantly sorry. It’s cold and drizzly here, too.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

lol, I love it! Makes me want to stay inside, crank up the heat, get a blanket, sip coffee and watch tv.

Too bad I can’t do ANY of those things today.

(look, in the summer it gets over 100 degrees for weeks at a time and we get VERY little “autumn” or “winter” here…and my ancestors were SCOTTISH! We love teh damp!)

          • BosGrl

Well, I’m supposed to be working right now ;) but I’m to busy arguing with people here. I’m subbing now (actual money not paid by the page!), so some days subbing and some days doing the insurance typing.

When you go home, do all those things.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

yeah! (i’m at home, off this week, but SUPPOSED to get getting house clean)

          • BosGrl

Oh, that’s right! You’re on vacation. Don’t clean until Sunday, when you can do it quickly ‘cuz you’re in a panic. :D

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

lol, missed deadline anyway…mom is home and doesn’t care about house, just happy to be out of hospital!

          • BosGrl

I missed this. Your mom was in the hospital??

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

aye, I didn’t bring it up. Scary monday – ER, ICU, but home and all’s cool.

          • BosGrl

I’m sorry. Will you give mom a hug from me and tell her someone in Boston is thinking about her?

      • h4rr4r
      • Good_Gawd_Yall

What in the world are you talking about? “I’m so dejected because I don’t have a horrible story of sexual assault to share! #notme” HORSESHIT. Also, #believewomen is a lesson we all need to learn, even though some of the women have questionable motives. For instance, I don’t believe Franken’s first accuser entirely – I imagine he was rather gross in his horseplay and probably his comments, but coming from someone who is so heavily identified with the reichwing I tend to doubt that the situation was all one-sided, or as bad as she’s now making it out to be. That hashtag is necessary because the fucking moron in the white house said he doesn’t believe the women. Not because we’re trying to force everyone to abandon all critical thinking and just mindlessly accept every word anyone says just because she’s a female.

        • Lascauxcaveman

Well, the first accuser you can discount, as I have done. The second one seems to have possibly been just joking around on FB with her sister? The next five are anonymous.

The Franken fuss stinks more the closer you get to it.

    • BosGrl

If you are the one whose mouth was being violated by somebody’s tongue, you might feel differently.

      • kathyseivers

Oh, good grief. I am a sexual harassment and sexual assault survivor. What Al Franken is alleged to have done is neither. Zero tolerance works for no one in any situation. Use your critical thinking skills.

        • BosGrl

Wow, ok, sister. #MeToo. How dare you tell me I’m not thinking critically because I don’t want any of my orifices invaded uninvited.

          • kathyseivers

Because you are ready to paint everyone with the same brush without thinking critically about it.

          • BosGrl

You don’t know anything about me, about my background, or what I deal with. Don’t tell me how I think.

        • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

The problem is that this situation is now a snowball careening down the mountainside. It’s no longer a matter of stopping it. It’s now trying to minimize how many people it flattens before it hits the bottom.

      • MC Planck

Your comment is incredibly insulting to people who have suffered actual sexual assault.

If the worst you ever had was a bad kiss, then go count your fucking blessings.

        • BosGrl

That is not the worst thing that ever happened to me. That is the least bad thing that ever happened to me. Do NOT try to tell me what I’ve suffered. Blocked.

          • MC Planck

For the record, I didn’t try to tell you what you’ve suffered. Literacy counts.

    • Ricky-pus gutted tub of guts

I see your point. A scorched earth approach to moral high ground might leave you with possession of little more than scorched ground. :(

  • Anne Of Green Bagels
  • Cat Cafe

You guys, I honestly think the GOP is deliberately using our well-meaning desire to be fair minded against us in the case of Franken, and we’re falling for it. We have gradations in society. We don’t judge a photo of a fake punch, or even an actual punch, or even repeated punches, the same as murder. Groping isn’t the same as child molesting, or repeatedly exposing yourself or masturbating in front of someone or raping someone. Especially when the person has done exemplary things–not just partisan, but exemplary things for the community. We also take the entire measure of a man or woman when considering a crime.

They WANT us to be forced to push out Franken. I think we’re being manipulated to get rid of one of the few really smart Democratic senators, one who’s unafraid to speak up to them, one who just happens to be Jewish. We’re “appeasing the tiger,” and they will just keep coming for more.

Meanwhile, they’re electing Roy Moore and supporting Donald Trump as president. They’re laughing at us. When we look back on this in historical context, we’ll look foolish for going along with them; Franken will be seen as an unnecessary casualty.

    • Aaron Wise

Tom Perez asked for him to resign.

    • FeloniousMonk

#1 Why would he resign if it was all lies?
#2 If the Democrats aren’t different, then aren’t “politicians all the same,” thereby excusing non-voters for their crimes?

      • h4rr4r

#1 Because he is only human. In a decent world it would be the right thing to do.
#2 They are, we are proving that now. Non-Voters are Trump voters. They made their choice.

        • FeloniousMonk

Giving in to a lying propaganda campaign is “the right thing to do”? How does that compute? The screaming deplorables, egged on by right-wing lies, should get whatever they want, because of decency?

          • h4rr4r

Read what I wrote again. Slowly.

          • FeloniousMonk

Well I’m still not sure what I’m reading there, not the brightest bulb here. But if he didn’t do it then I don’t see how he quits.

          • h4rr4r

I said in a decent world.

I however think this so distracts from what he wants that it is a personal decision.

          • BigCSouthside

At least in the short term…fuck decency. We need power, because if we don’t get it, everything liberals and progressives have worked for will be gone, and it’s eroding way faster than I thought it could

Right now they’ve weaponized decency. There are ways to do right without handing them the means to eject troublesome senators and slander liberals

          • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

The problem with that strategy is that you end up with the same moral relativism and situational ethics we lambaste the opposition for. At some point you have to say “This is where I make my stand. Either like it or lump it.”

          • FeloniousMonk

The Minnesota Governor isn’t going to appoint a Republican replacement, I don’t see that as a problem.

          • BigCSouthside

I’m more concerned about handing the other side an eject button for senators they don’t like.

          • … because all Senators they don’t like have wandering hands, huh?

      • Lance Thrustwell

#1 No one’s saying it’s all lies. The photo sure isn’t a lie; even Franken says so. Of the other charges, some could be true and others lies, the true ones could be exaggerations, or not. We don’t know anything, besides 1) the photo’s real, and 2) when in doubt, it’s best to give the benefit of the doubt to the women (while looking like hell for a conspiracy!)

#2 The Democrats can be “different” without being self-sacrificing. That’s the fine line, and admittedly, it can be hard to tell just where that line is.

        • FeloniousMonk

Resignation will be tantamount to a confession, and apparently, he’s about to resign. So yeah, apparently it is not all lies.

          • Lance Thrustwell

Does seem like it. It’s odd, too, because up ’til now, I don’t think he’s said anything to the effect of admitting to any of the gropings. Unless I missed something.

          • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

Could equally be “I am now the focus of a lot of media attention when it should be on the horrible GOP policy and horrible people enacting it. It’s best that I step aside so that we can get back to what is important.”

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

He might just be sick of getting attacked by Democrats. He’s got enough money to leave the country, after Republicans finish burning it down, but I dont, sdo i hope he stasys and fights.

          • MC Planck

For the record his resignation was the opposite of a confession.

For which he was excoriated by the usual suspect, of course.

      • Cat Cafe

I think just these two points have been thoroughly examined by the OP and then my post

    • BigCSouthside

yep. And they fell for it. Trump just took a piss on 2 state peace, the ex NSA has said they intended to rip up sanctions, and idiot jr is testifying in front of congress today, but what’s trending? Al Fucking Franken.

      • FeloniousMonk

what 2 state peace? I’m an old man and they’ve been yammering about that since I was a kid! The folks screaming “Death to Israel” and “The Holocaust Didn’t Happen” don’t seem to be open to negotiated solutions.

        • Dept. of Space Tacos

neither does the government forcing Palestinians out of their homes to built settlements, using a military like an occupation force or shooting palestinians.

          Neither side’s hands are clean.

          • FeloniousMonk

Seems like their smartest move would be to agree, yes, this is all Israel. Then, start demanding voting rights. Rope-a-dope would be a winning strategy, they’ve got the numbers. But they’d have to couch their arguments in terms of equal citizenship, i.e., admit that all Israelis are humans, with rights. And they sure aren’t about to do that.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

uhhhh, yeah no. I don’t agree with just ANY of that.

          • But that wouldn’t work because almost all parties in Israel agree that Israel is a JEWISH state and annexing the West Bank and Gaza would mean a 45-55% (not sure on the precise proportion) non-Jewish population.

          • Lilah

I mean, it’s not like those Shandas in the Likud party haven’t strung their voters along a path towards hard-right, dehumanizing ultranationalism.

          • BearDeLaOursistance

Which is why international politics needz moar Angry Mom. “BOTH OF YOU go sit in different corners and think about what you’ve done”.

          That road goes both ways.

Building walls on someone else’s property and settlements doesn’t really help.

Nor does using white phosphorous on civilians.

Thank you for that – I hadn’t seen that one. And it matches my sentiments as a victim and a Minnesotan that supports Franken.

I feel fucking erased like I’m nothing again today.

From a morning of tears and happiness about Time’s choice to this all in one day.

    • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Nicely written! I’d like to chime in that I think he got rat fucked by Roger Stone. They dug up an old picture of Franken pretending to grope a woman, and they very successfully ran with it. I was glad when Franken said the latest accuser (“he told me he was an entertainer so he could do whatever he liked”) was just full of shit. I am passed that he’s resigning.

    • Lance Thrustwell

I’m torn about this whole thing, and I don’t necessarily agree with everything you’re saying here. However, I totally get what you’re saying, and it makes sense.

      I am scrambled, like egg.

      • BosGrl

I think we all are scrambled about this. If we can discuss it without calling each other names, that would be great (I don’t mean you of course!).

      • Christopher Smith

Neither torn nor scrambled. This is a scam, a put-up job, and those women are well-paid Rethug whores coached to step forward at exactly the right moment to deflect from Russian, Mueller’s indictments, the fact that Franken serves on a certain committee, Moore, and of course the obscene tax bill, among other things.

        • Lilah

What the fuck, man? Calling women who’ve come forward about sexual assault “whores” is like, peak 1950s misogyny. It’s not cool.

          • Christopher Smith

News flash, woman: “whore” is not just for sex workers any more, and is well-known to be a term describing a mercenary or someone who performs any sort of acts for money (not necessarily including sex acts.) The women in question are Rethug operatives to the core, or didn’t you notice that Tweeden is best buds with Hannity and worked for Faux Sports as well? Nice black-and-white ‘sexual assault’ garbage as well, for alleged butt grabs and attempted kisses. Yep, those are exactly the same as rape, pedophilia, and coerced sexual intercourse. Of course they are.

          • Lilah

Do I look like I give a fuck what you think the term means specifically today and if it is or isn’t accurate? The implication is a woman who sells her sexuality for money, and thus can’t be trusted and doesn’t deserve respect. It’s bullshit rooted in male fears of female sexuality.

          • Christopher Smith

Do I look like I give a fuck what you think, period? The ‘implication’ is all in your drooling, uneducated mind (and, by the way, the word you’re looking for is ‘connotation.’) and I couldn’t care less what your stupidity and crappy pseudofeminism wishes to demonize

          • Lilah

Maybe I’m uneducated (or maybe I’m not) all I know is that when a man uses the term “whore” to demonize a woman or women, he rarely is the type of person who respects women in general, or has any interest in our liberation.

          • MC Planck

Can he use the word to demonize a man?

Or is it just demonizing women you’re against?

          • Lilah

Like it or not, whore is a gendered term. If it’s used against a man, it’s used in a misogynistic way, to compare the sexuality of the man to the (inferior) sexuality of an (amoral) woman.

          • MC Planck

There have been male prostitutes for all of history. Your casual dismissal of their experience is hurtful and shaming.

          • Lilah

Of course. But prostitution is and has been a female-dominated institution, and referring to people as ‘whores’ still implies a fear and dismissal of female sexuality.

          • Bangkok Taxi

            No. No, it doesn’t.

          • Bangkok Taxi

Sounds like you put a lot of effort into being or maintaining your “world done me wrong” identity.

          • Christopher Smith

Language means something. Words have significance. Any woman interested in liberation should know that, if nothing else. (Read anything by Dale Spender, particularly ‘Man Made Language,’ to learn about it.) When you insist that your view of a word is the only correct one, contradicting every available dictionary entry on that word, you continue the chain of incorrect assumptions which makes it possible for you to generalize about men whom you know nothing of and have never met. Nothing about this witch-hunt supports liberation for anyone except Rethug beasts who will try exactly the same trick in a month or two, emboldened by the circular firing squad and the same imbecilic lack of any cohesive stance which already weakens the Democratic party so grievously. I’m VERY sorry you think this can be framed as some sort of proto-feminist ‘victory,’ when in fact it is an ugly little manipulation of modern sensationalism, drama-queen behavior, and rightwing tabloid journalism. Read the links from Democratic Underground. These stories are FULL of holes, improbabilities, and anachronisms, even without a full investigation.

          • Lilah

I’m not imposing any definition on your words, I’m simply saying that words have history, and intent != impact. When you use a word like ‘whore’ to attack a woman who has come forth about sexual assault, like it or not, you are recalling and calling up the history of men using women’s sexuality to justify ignoring, belittling and demeaning us.

          • Christopher Smith

You most certainly did impose your own incorrect definition on a word I used correctly, as well as continuing shamelessly to ABUSE the term ‘sexual assault.’ Pure nonsense, and pure recycled weary old Seventies agitprop. Get a new schtick–you’re currently the embodiment of what scurrilous anti-feminist screeds like ‘Who Killed Feminism’ so successfully attacked. Sorry I wasted any time attempting to educate you. Byebye.

          • Lilah

Nice meeting you you brogressive fuckhead. The feminism of the seventies wouldn’t recognize me as a woman, let alone support my right to speak on the topic of womanhood. Words matter just as much if not more in 21st century feminism as they did in the second wave (which, I’ll note, routinely ignored or acted patronizingly towards sex workers).

For the sake of education, I’ll try this one more time. The word Whore comes from a slang term for prostitute. When used as an insult, it insinuated that a woman who sold her body for sex was morally tainted and should be dismissed or ignored. Even as the term has broadened in usage the original implication is the same: “this person has sold something in a way that is morally equivalent to selling their body for sex, which makes them, like a woman selling her body for sex, morally tainted. No matter what you are referring to, you are implying that being something equivalent to a woman who sells her body for sex is a Very Bad Thing Which Gives Us The Right To Ignore You. It is, inherently, alluding to women’s sexuality to stigmatize and delegitimize. I don’t know of a more fundamentally patriarchial expression than that.

I’m shocked that a troll like you found his way onto a progressive blog. Fuck off back to the manoshphere.

          • Bangkok Taxi

            Troll?
            You reveal all.

          • Bangkok Taxi

Yes you did. It was exactly what you did.

          • Bangkok Taxi

No, not really. The characterization has been used in literature the same way for years referring to men, as whores for this or that person cause or whatever.

          • Ill-Advised

Just addressing her as “woman” had a condescending sound to it. She has a name. You can disagree without the put-down.

          • Christopher Smith

You are hilarious. She addressed me as ‘man.’ What about equal terms of address don’t you comprehend?

          • Bangkok Taxi

Im glad you are here. This purity left crap is absolutely sickening.

          • Bangkok Taxi

Certainly the execution of such leaves room for improvement,,, always has and always will.

To toss aside our step by step due process tradition for political expediency,
on the basis of credible accusation is childish if not agenda driven.
The chorus of Senators calling for Frankens head is truly repugnant.
Perhaps Pubs are right about Dems being the more craven of the lot of us.

    • tomamitai

We’re washing the motes out of our own eyes with acid in the vain hope the republicans will prune a few of the beams in theirs.

      • Bobathonic

Meh, we’re washing motes out of our eyes because we have motes in our eyes.

      • Cat Cafe

        EXACTLY.

    • Arolpin

Does anyone here remember what the idea of what is now MoveOn.org was? It was originally formed to advocate that the Senate should censure President Clinton and then MOVE ON. They weren’t going to remove him from office, but the Republicans were trying to drag out the process as long as possible. I think the Senate should investigate, and if all the allegations against Franken are not founded, drop the case. If he kissed someone inappropriately, they should censure and then move on. If it’s found that he committed more egregious acts, he should resign.
Of course this will require his accusers to come forth and identify themselves, at least to the investigators. f I were Al (and I knew that beyond an off-color joke there was no truth to this) I would be having a press conference stating exactly that tomorrow, and I would demand that every Republican with allegations against them also sign on.

      • CripesAmighty

        Yup.

    • Christopher Smith

Thank you. Crucifying a man without a hearing for partisan, conveniently timed allegations (one of which is ANONYMOUS) from women who have everything to gain from those allegations, and are members of the party of every obscenely dirty trick and scam in the book –while the Rethugs snicker because the Democratic fucking circular firing squad does all their work for them.

      • Lilah

Eight allegations. Eight women. Some of them democratic staffers. How many women would it take for you to believe their stories? 10? 15? 100? Or only when it’s the other guys?

        • Christopher Smith

Several anonymous allegations, and what Democratic staffers might those be? Everyone Franken works with has supported him so far. Nice witchhunt. You’d have fit right in in SALEM.

          • Bangkok Taxi

Careful, next she will bitch about the negative connotations to women concerning the word witch.

    • MC Planck

You’ve missed one important point: the target isn’t really Franken. The target is any meaningful distinction between criminal and non-criminal sexual behavior.

Fascism always strikes at the truth first. It is necessary to establish that all men are sexual predators, and therefore there are only our men or their men. Everything must be reduced to tribal loyalty.

      • Cat Cafe

Yes, I’ve been trying to form that thought, and you articulate it perfectly.

    • Covfefe’s Evil Twin

I get that we (big D Dems) ought to be annoyed/disgruntled/apoplectic about Conyers’ behavior, BUT I am more annoyed and disgruntled over the fact that his congressional seat is apparently already “called” by one of his kids or nephews.
Fuck the fuck out of that entitlement/nepotism at EVERY level of government. It ain’t fucking cool. At. All.

  • anon_the_great

Criminalizing liberal politicians is how it’s done in Russia.

  • Good_Gawd_Yall

Here’s the thing: we’re going to lose a very good, very smart guy because of allegations of behaviors that are gross but not illegal, that took place between adults (not that any of that makes perving on women right). In another week the R’s are going to elect an actual, literal pervert who preyed on children. In January, the turtle McTraitor will seat him because “the people of Alabama have a right to choose who they want to represent them” or some other specious bullshit. They are always going to win because they don’t have morals or ethics or qualms about doing whatever it takes to get what they want. If we keep sticking to the high road, we’re going to find that it ends in a flaming dung heap. We cannot make them change their behavior, so we need to change ours. How about this proposition: We’ll encourage Al Franken to leave when you throw Roy Moore out? Until then, our guy stays to balance out your guy.

    • Aaron Wise

Too late. 28 (D)Senators already folded, and asked for Franked to resign.

Of course he does. Franken is reliably a vote against every evil the likes of McTraitor want to unleash on this country. Moore is reliably a vote for all the evils.

    • jesuswasablack

The key word here is allegations, Franken has never admitted that he did anything wrong, this whole fucking #metoo train is out of control. We can’t just start demanding people resign based on questionable and mostly anonymous accusations? If this is the standard get ready for the Steve Bannon’s and James O’Keefe’s of the world to drag every liberal down, it’s going to happen.

    • MC Planck

It’s not even the high road. It’s the fact road.

Franken and Seder have one thing in common: they were convicted on accusations alone. No independent investigation was conducted – as it has been in every other case.

The thing that gets me the most is all the Lefties who cannot tell the difference between a) accusations, and b) independent well-researched journalism.

Even Weinstein was an open secret. When the first accusations came out, there were thousands of people saying, “Ya, you didn’t already know?”

But Franken – all it takes is 5 women, one of whom demonstrably lied, and that counts the same as the WaPo’s careful article.

It’s done. America is done. I’m sorry.

  • 🍁 Girl Guide Salute 🖖🏻

Meanwhile in Canada, a memorial was recently held for the victims of a mass shooting at an engineering college in Montréal 28 years ago, perpetrated by an Elliot Rodger predecessor who deliberately killed women for being “feminists” and not “knowing their place.” The prime minister — himself a son of Québec — is a self-declared feminist who specifically mentioned that the victims were killed because they were women and because they dared to make their way into a historically male-dominated field.

Not that it’ll matter anyway, because 1) today, that execrable POS Marc Lépine (piss be upon him) is a hero to the same MRA incels who voted Trump, support his clones up north, and regard the current PM as a “cuck,” and 2) the corrupt dick-measurers Bibi and Trump are out wagging their wieners of mass destruction in full force in the land of the patriarchal desert religions, where they’re about to ignite the war to end all wars.

Bye, Mother Earth. You were the original #MeToo (#MeFirst), but the stupid men didn’t care. Gun culture is nuke culture is rape culture. On behalf of non-garbage people, I’d like to say that we are really, really soory.

This is an old and worn out, not-funny not-clever schtick.

      • jesuswasablack

Yes but it is the new standard, how is this any different than the Franken allegations, are you victim blaming, are your blaming my cousin for getting assaulted by Kirsten Gillibrand?

        • h4rr4r

So possibly true allegations are now the same as actual lies?

Really? This is what you honestly think is best?

          Dude, wtf.

          • jesuswasablack

How are Frankens allegations possibly true and my cousins are not, what do you base this on, cable TeeVee coverage? What is the metric?

          • h4rr4r

Well one set are allegations made and the other is you being a jackass.

          • jesuswasablack

So franken accusers are more credible because what twitter? What makes one un-provable allegation any better than the next?

          • h4rr4r

One you obviously are making to be an asshole. They might also but I don’t know that like I do in this case.

          • Shan

He’s trying to make some sort of point but he’s being an asshole about it, unlike other commenters trying to make the same point but who are actually being reasonable non-assholes.

Sometimes I feel like that might be his default setting.

        • BearDeLaOursistance

Well… because the allegation against Franken was an ass grab, not just any physical touching. A much more personal part of the body.

I still think it’s OK to look at this (or any) allegation of misconduct with a skeptical eye… but that particular comparison doesn’t pencil out.

Well two Republicans and five anonymous women all say Franken groped them during photo sessions (weird that no photos have surfaced), yet 36 women he worked with said he was never inappropriate. • Vagenda and Pee-ara

I just read an article in The Atlantic, allegedly written by a Democrat, who says she knows Franken is guilty, because he once squeezed her waist during a photo op. What a monster!

The author of the article also said Juanita Broadrick was definitely raped by Bill Clinton. Ken Starr didn’t even believe Broadrick, becausr she’s such a loon. She claims Hillary thanked her for fucking Bill, and the two of them murdered her husband…and her cat. Yeah, those accusations seem totally credible.

OK, Wonkette. I have to leave you for a while. I can’t understand these responses to Franken. I just can’t. Is he as bad as Moore? Gracious, no. Is he kind of a creep? It looks like it. Is the GOP going to use this for both-siderism arguments while continuing to support men who habitually abuse women and children? Of course.

That doesn’t mean that Conyers and Franken should continue to serve. I’m increasingly unnerved to hear Wonketteers saying so.

    • jesuswasablack

      see ya!

      • Persistent Tennessee Rain

That’s a real shitty way to treat a long time respected poster who happens to have a different opinion from yours. Be sure to call the internet police on her and register your complaint.

        • Christopher Smith

And your condemnation of Franken–without an investigation and with him denying the latest accusation completely– is a real shitty way to treat a long-time respected Senator whose minor peccadilloes are being used for a Roger Stone hit job/frameup, at the most convenient time imaginable.

          • Persistent Tennessee Rain

            Oh look. I have fan.

        • MC Planck

Smith is right – if Franken doesn’t get an investigation or credit for his past good behavior, why should you?

Some anonymous internet commentator said you’re full of shit. That’s good enough for me!

    • Sean Jungian

Ditto. Franken was one of my favorite senators – was he a good senator? YES. Did he look out for his constituents? YES.

Does that give him a pass to be a gross demeaning creep to women, (even women we don’t like)? NO.

I have been so disappointed in the contortions Franken supporters have mangled themselves into in order to excuse him.

It doesn’t matter that “their side is worse!” That still doesn’t give him a pass.

      • tomamitai

I don’t hear anyone asking to give him a pass, they just don’t want to give him the death penalty!

      • MC Planck

I don’t think he’s been gross or demeaning. He was on a comedy tour where everyone was gross; he may have accidentally touched a few women out of thousands of selfies.

At the very worst, Franken is the kind of molester that waits until you ask him to touch you first. Treating him like Moore is simply insane.

    • Cat Cafe

But exactly, “is he as bad as Moore,” is the exact question. He isn’t! We have gradations in society! We don’t judge everything in black and white. We don’t punish a punch in the face exactly the same as child molesting or murder. The GOP is using our well meaning desire for fair-mindedness against us. GOP: “Look you’re hypocrites!” Dems: “Oh dear, we might be hypocrites! Let’s get rid of the exact person you’re trying to get rid of because he potently speaks up to you! Okay! We’ll do this and then you guys will see how fair we are!” They are just laughing at us. And if we do this, we’re just showing them how weak and foolish we are, and they’ll press for more. They WANT us to turn on Franken–it distracts us from Trump and Roy Moore. We should not fall for it. C’mon! We have brains and judgment, we get to use them, we get to stand up against attempts to make us forget them. It’s like a teenager deliberately pushing his mom’s buttons “But Mom, you’re not being FAIR….” and Mom, like a fool, going “okay, I see your point,” while the teenager is just manipulating her to get what he wants.

      • Sean Jungian

        I couldn’t give 2 sh*ts if the right thinks I’m a hypocrite or not – I care whether I think I’m a hypocrite or not.

Incredibly, my every thought, feeling, and action is not dictated by the GOP, the right, or conservatives.

Franken absolutely went over the line in his “jokes”. I don’t necessarily think he has to resign, but I absolutely believe his effectiveness has completely crashed and he should not run for re-election. Conyers has done a lot of good as well but he still abused his power in order to “score” with his subordinates. He should resign.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

I’m not super concerned about how hard the GOP and their ilk are laughing. I’m worried about the women who will never join either party if each party treats sexual harassment like it ain’t no thing.

        • MC Planck

How about worrying about the men who see that anonymous accusations and out-of-context photos can destroy your career – and you have _no_ defense. You can’t even demand an investigation.

    • Skwerl the Taco Hunter

So you’ve convicted Franken? And you aren’t willing to face those who are skeptical?

      • AnnieGetYerFun

Sure. Let’s go with that, if it helps.

        • Skwerl the Taco Hunter

          Okay. It is your choice.

      • greyXstar

That’s the exact same thing the Moore and President Grabby-hands defenders are saying. We’re better than that.

        • Skwerl the Taco Hunter

So what you are saving is that Moore and Trump have convicted Franken and we are better than that?

Because that is what you are saying, but I don’t think that is what you mean.

          • FeloniousMonk

How about we see what Franken says tomorrow? If the man says he is being ratfucked by liars then fine, I’m with him. If he quits and apologizes, then I’m fine with letting the door hit him in the ass on the way out.

          • Skwerl the Taco Hunter

            Sounds fair.

          • greyXstar

And if he says he’s being ratfucked by liars, why should we just take his word for it? Because the last time I checked, that’s what Moore and Trump have constantly used as a defense.

          • Roadstergal

I thought Moore’s defense was “Look at how many teenage girls I didn’t assault!”

          • greyXstar

He’s got a bunch of nonsense that’s impossible to even keep track of.

          • Arolpin

Moore’s defense was originally, “That 14-year old is a liar, the other ones were legal, and I had their mothers’ permission” which morphed into, “I’ve never met any of those girls, I never dated any of them, anyone saying differently is lying, and the yearbook and graduation flyer that I personally signed are forgeries.” to now, “It’s the (((elites))) and the gays and the lesbians and the Demoncrats and the transgenders trying to crucify me like they did Jesus.”
There is a huge difference here. Franken has been consistent, Moore has more stories than his dates have birthdays.

          • Skwerl the Taco Hunter

Well, is it a possibility? The people accusing Moore and Trump have a lot of support for their stories based in other people’s witnessing of their behaviors. The doesn’t absolve Franken, but there is a possibility this is a hit job and we are falling for it.

          • greyXstar

Sure, go ahead and buy into that delusion. I’m not going to sink to their level.

          • MC Planck

Maybe… we should give him an investigation to determine if he is telling the truth.

Like every other figure has gotten. Like he is asking for.

          • greyXstar

I genuinely don’t have a clue what you’re trying to say here.

          • Skwerl the Taco Hunter

If you could clarify your previous post. Who or what are we better than?

          • greyXstar

We’re better than the Moore defenders who are saying that they’re just accusations and voters shouldn’t “convict” him by voting against him because of it.

        • MC Planck

But Moore and Trump have been independently investigated.

          Where is Franken’s independent investigation?

Why are you unable to tell the difference?

      • BearDeLaOursistance

That’s a fair point. I’m concerned about basing one’s level of belief in an allegation upon the type or severity of the allegation itself (rather than on an assessment of the available facts around it). In such a setting, an unscrupulous party with an axe to grind need only ensure that a false allegation is strong enough, or of the right type. This also muddies the waters for allegations that are true — which, when it comes to sexual harassment, are sadly far more numerous than American culture has been willing to admit. Regardless of the truth of any specific allegation, we collectively really do need to fight the “LA LA LA I can’t hear you” that has often prevailed in this setting.

    • Persistent Tennessee Rain

C’mon. Either the O’Keefe contingent lined-up 9 con artists here, or the guy is a bit too handsy for mixed company. It’s one or the other at this point and purity has nothing to do with it.

      • MC Planck

How many of those con artists are anonymous?

How is being handsy equivalent to molesting 14 year olds?

        How stupid is the Left?

        • Covfefe’s Evil Twin

are there levels of “handsyness” where being only somewhat handsy is okay?

No. fucking. No. It’s called assault and it happens way more often than most offenders (men) would care to admit or acknowledge.

          • MC Planck

So we are to conclude from your post that any level of touching is the same as sexual assault and all men are offenders.

If you’re a Republican, good on you for furthering the narrative. You’re winning!

            If you’re a Democrat, I give up.

          • Covfefe’s Evil Twin

Am I to conclude from your question that you would be offended if I got “handsy” with your wife/gf/sister but you would be fine if I just “touched” your wife/gf/sister/s breasts or butt?

You probably should give up, since you have completely missed the point.

  • ariel_gee_398

I appreciate Franken trying to do the right thing, but maybe the answer is that it shouldn’t just be up to the individual to resign, but that Congress should have some independent oversight of standards. Because I have to tell you, it’s fucking sticking in my craw that Franken is gone over this and Roy Moore is going to get elected after being accused of trying to rape a teenager.

  • Victoria Ricola

This outcome is what I’ve wanted my entire life. I want the next generation of girls to be safer than my generation. I can’t be mad that I’m getting what I want and the conversation around sexual assault and harassment is forever changed.

That said, it really sucks that part of the conversation around sexual assault and harassment is now a political game between dickhead GOP dickheads who want to use it as one of their dickhead issues and regular decent liberals who just don’t want snatchers running around at the job. And I loved Franken, so that sucks too. Fucking 2017.

    • BosGrl

At least we’re having the conversation. At least we’ve begun. Things really are going to suck at first.

      • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

I think it’s a lot similar to the purging of the Dixiecrats – people are going to get swept up, and some that may not have made as big an error in judgment will have to suffer as much as the ones who gleefully took part.

      • johnnyknj

Damn right I’m angry. I’m watching the country that, with all it’s flaws, I have loved go down the tubes. And we are playing the Republicans game and hastening the process.

        • FeloniousMonk

Drawing a bright line between the molester party, and the anti-molester party, might not be such a bad political move actually.

          • MC Planck

Except that Franken is not a molester. He never touched a woman that didn’t ask him to touch them.

At worst, he touched them in ways they didn’t want him to; but if you cannot see a fundamental difference between a “molester” who does not initiate physical contact until you ask for it and a real molester, then there cannot be a bright line.

      • FeloniousMonk

Wait until the “gropers lives matter” stage of the “conversation.” You’ll wish we were back at the beginning, when there was hope!

        • BosGrl

          Yikes

      • MC Planck

The conversation will not last until next summer.

After Franken is forced out, the Republicans will reveal that their accusers were lying. They will point out that Mike Pence is right; a man cannot work with a woman as a peer or be in a room alone with her, without risk to his career.

And the upshot will be a return to 1950. Women will be “protected” by being blocked from any meaningful public life. Meanwhile, men will do whatever they want, knowing that all accusations will be dismissed as merely trumped-up Frankenisms.

With Weinstein and Spacey and so on, we had a real conversation. But then the Left decided that Twitter could replace any kind of independent investigation, and the Right put that genie right back in the bottle.

        • BosGrl

I disagree. The kids I talk to are much less afraid to speak up and keeping the focus on the harasser takes the stigma off the harassee.

    • johnnyknj

Yes, and those girls will be better off. Except for lacking affordable healthcare. Or a planet that isn’t teetering on environmental disaster. Or a country that isn’t a defacto plutocracy. Or affordable higher education. Or a reasonably comfortable retirement. Too bad we couldn’t achieve your outcome without the collateral damage to us all.

      • Victoria Ricola

We should tackle those things as well, angry friend, and I hope we can all get out to vote in 2018 to make it a better world for everyone.

      • Shan

You can’t possibly be laying all that at the feet of the #metoo movement.

        • johnnyknj

Not at all. It’s an important issue. It’s just that while we put our focus on it, the Rethugs are looting the country and ruining peoples lives.

          • Shan

It’s possible to focus on multiple important issues at a time.

          • johnnyknj

Yes, but almost impossible to get the broader public to focus on even one.

    • MC Planck

If Franken is forced to resign because of anonynous accusations from selfie-takers, no male politician will ever again pose for a selfie with a woman.

if Franken is forced to resign because of a legitimate work issue where he made a woman merely uncomfortable and stopped as soon as she noted her discomfort, no man will ever work with a woman again.

Meanwhile, the people who actually run the government will molest 14 year old girls.

This is the world you hoped for?

      Five by my count.
The one in the photo, who is the most credible who works for conservative media.
Then one in a State Fair photo, who has been a lifelong conservative claiming to have been a Democrat.
Two completely anonymous women who came out together with an unverifiable story identical to the first one.
      Then another anonymous one today.

Color me skeptical of the first, very suspicious of the other four.

Sounds as spontaneous as the conversation in “The Manchurian Candidate” (novel) where the Senator from Minnesota is dying (perhaps poisoned by Eleanor) and exhorts Johnny Iselin to run for his seat and protect America from Communism.

  • greyXstar

It’s the right thing to do. Progress and making the world a better place means doing things that temporarily hurt, but are ultimately the right thing to do.

But the grown ups setting the good example here and cleaning their own house will be an example that gets enthusiastically ignored. And that plain sucks.

    • MC Planck

Franken resigning is not setting a precedent for eliminating sexual abusers. It is setting a precedent for destroying men with out-of-context photos and anonymous accusations.

      That’s not a good example.

      • greyXstar

They’re certainly not anonymous. Honestly, I’m surprised there isn’t some sort of administrative leave for this sort of thing. There probably should be. But there isn’t, so I think maybe we should hold our politicians to the same standards we’re currently holding actors and comedians to.

        • MC Planck

I agree. We should hold them to the same standards.

What Spacey, Weinstien, Lauer, et. al. did are in no way comparable to what Franken has been accused of. This is the essential point that so many people seem unable to grasp.

If you cannot process any other detail, process this: Franken touched or kissed no one who did not consent to be touched or kissed. One was a peer doing an act, which she consented to; the others came up to him and asked him to pose with them. If Franken is a molester, he is the kind of molester that waits for someone to invite him. Can’t you see how categorically different that is from what those others did?

  • Hamilton Ω, AKA Formerly DN

I stopped by our local Salvation Army thrift store this afternoon to re-gift some birthday gifts I didn’t want or need. Met a very nice African American lady under age 30 in the Donation Room, she asked me if I wanted a receipt. I said “No, thanks, the GOP is going to take away our Charitable Donations write-off, so I won’t need one.” She was completely unaware of the entire GOP tax bills issue, so I explained it to her. She was shocked. Then I told her about the Time Person of the Year. She was very pleased, more pleased than I expected, so I asked her “Did that ever happen to you?” She looked around furtively at the 2 white men also working in the Donation Room and said “Let’s go outside and talk.” It seems one of those men has been sexually harassing her for several months, and she complained to the store manager, and he did precisely nothing. The men told the manager it was HER fault because she keeps “bumping into me and flirting with me” (I saw this guy, nobody in their right mind flirt with him, he looked like Pee Wee Herman would look at age 60 after living homeless on the streets for 30 years). We had a chat about appropriate ways to respond to sexual harassment at work. It was nice.

Who would ever have thought that men in the Salvation Army would be sexual abusers? Not me! (yeah, me!).

    • Dept. of Space Tacos

and yet they hated on the gay folks…is why I don’t put no jingle in their buckets this time of year.

      • h4rr4r

This is why I stopped donating to them. Now I just donate to a local homeless shelter.

        Also their name is awesome.

        • Angela Ruzzo

I thought about doing that, but it’s the only place other than Goodwill to donate, and I am not very pleased with Goodwill lately – they grossly overcharge. However, they do hire disabled people, so there’s a conflict there.

          • Shan

They hire disabled people at below minimum wage.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

            beat me to it

          • Shan

And then there’s baconzgood’ experiences with Goodwill.

I will NEVER have anything to do with them again.

          • Angela Ruzzo

So what do you do with items you own that you don’t need and don’t want? I’m not going to throw stuff away, I have to donate it somewhere, and I don’t have a lot of options in this little town. I’m not going to list a $2 curling iron on Craig’s List, that would be ridiculous.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

i’m a big proponent of the local abused women and children shelter. A volunteer told me they often come in with nothing but the clothes they’re wearing.

AND, this particular org at least, lets them take donated stuff with them to help them start over on their own – ya know, house stuff you had to buy when you went to college, sheets, pans, forks and knives.

          • Angela Ruzzo

We don’t have that around here, or if we do (we probably do) they keep it very quiet. Our local Red Cross has something like that, but I got pissed off at them one summer when we were having a horrendous heat spell (temps over 110 degrees) and elderly and disabled people were dying like flies, so I called them and said “I’ve got a window AC I’d like to donate” and they said “We can’t pick it up, you’ll have to bring it to us.” Well shit, I can’t even lift it. And another time I had a brand new queen mattress set – still wrapped in plastic with the tags – that I wanted to donate to a family whose house burned down, and they said the same thing. Another time I tried to volunteer with them, because I figured my experiences after Hurricane Katrina made me sensitive to the needs of people who have gone through a disaster, and they made me go through this ridiculous online application which ended with the statement “We’ll get in touch with you” and they NEVER DID! So I called them, asked to speak to the head person, had to leave a message, and they never called me back.

          • TakingAmes

The Military Order of the Purple Heart (https://purpleheartfoundation.org/, benefits wounded vets) takes donations of clothing, housewares, and other stuff, and you can schedule them to come to you to pick up. I’ve donated to them before and it’s super easy.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

ugh, i volunteered briefly and even defended them afterwards, but some ominous stories have come out.

          • Shan

I take mine to the DAV but I also belong to a FB group that barters items. Some people just offer things for free, too. There might be a group like that in your area (not necessarily on FB).

Grrr, this triggered my SA story: my grandmother played organ (shut up, class!) for years at a SA church, for free (and was known for making food for all manner of shut-ins). However, when she slipped at a casino in Atlantic City, no one from the church would visit her in the hospital, because she fell in a casino. Guess how much I toss in their stupid kettles?

      • Angela Ruzzo

      • alpacapunchbowl

If you have a Value Village, donate there.

      • Angela Ruzzo

I wish we did. There is a chain of thrift stores in the South called “America’s Thrift Shop” which I frequented when I was trying to rebuild my life after Hurricane Katrina, and they had good stuff at good prices. I found my EXACT 1965 sewing machine there for $10, and I bought it because mine had been drowned. This chain does not exist in Missouri.

We did have a very good, very big non-profit locally-owned thrift shop called “Value City” that was right next door to an American Pawn Shop. They bought gold at very good prices. The pawn shop got really pissed off because they were giving better prices, so they went out of their way using dishonest and illegal actions to get Value City’s business license revoked. The people who run American Pawn are ultra-right-wing Republicans, the kind of people who are always screaming about “Free Market Capitalism!” but when free market capitalism hurts their bottom line, then they change their tune. Fuck American Pawn.

    • greyXstar

Last night I was at Walmart with my niece and nephew (Target’s like 20 minutes away, don’t judge me), and she said “aww I feel so bad I don’t have any cash to put in the SA bucket”. I told her they were run by an anti-LGBT company.

      “Oh eww nevermind”

      Things aren’t all terrible.

      • Angela Ruzzo

You raise a point I forgot to mention – Goodwill is 11 miles away and SA is 5 miles away, and I try to minimize my driving so as to save the planet in my own itsy bitsy insignificant way. Otherwise, I would donate to Goodwill.

        • greyXstar

Driving just makes me anxious as hell in general. I’m definitely not going that far in the dark.

I am fortunate in having branches of both Out Of The Closet (proceeds go to medical care for HIV+ folk) and Pick Of The Litter (proceeds go to the humane society) close by. SA gets not a cent.

      • Angela Ruzzo

My local Humane Society has an annual blind auction, but they won’t take used items, they just want expensive stuff they can sell to raise money, like artwork. There is also “Upscale Resale” but they are run by a bunch of snobby society ladies with too much time on their hands, and also they are 12 miles away, so I don’t go there.

WTF is groping? Is it pussy-grabbing? Butt patting? Butt squeezing? Boob grabbing? These accusations need to be as specific as possible. I get it’s a problem and humiliating to women. A shitload of sexual consent is negotiated with non-verbal communication, and imagining a signal and then stopping right away when told “no” to a kiss is fundamentally different than pussy grabbing. It also MIGHT lead to the discussion we need to have – why is sexual consent still being negotiated like we’re all in Jr High? BTW – gay as a goddam goose, and I’ve never forced myself on anyone.

          • coozledad

They’re Republicans any damn way you look at it. Just white nationalism in cargo shorts and ironic beards.

    • Resistor Radio

Yeah, the guy at the liquor store with the white power tattoos on his fucking hands is toooootally open to a dialog about income inequality.
      Fuck that noise.

  • Msgr_MΩment

Jesus Butterscotch Christ. I leave you kids alone for an hour to teach my class and you can’t all just get along?

  • Bananas Foster

    Thought experiment…

What would the world be like if at midnight (Greenwich time, I guess), every male politician, leader, monarch, CEO, etc. were replaced by a woman of equal intelligence and education (can’t include experience, because women’s experiences are institutionally limited many places — actually the education part is problematic too…)?

To be fair, every similar role currently held by a woman could be taken by a man.

I don’t think women are better than men, but perhaps less likely to start wars and shove their genitals in people’s faces.

ETA: The Jerusalem thing has put me past my limit.

    • I mean if you were looking for a woman of equal intelligence and education to our President, Sarah Palin would be on the short list, so… Let’s trade up.

      • The Wanderer

Carly Fiorina, in keeping with the so-called ‘business’ acumen of The Homunculus.

    • Skwerl the Taco Hunter

The problem is power, not gender.

      • Bananas Foster

Yeah, I think maybe it might have a little to do with gender too.

        • MC Planck

So this is what women’s equality means? That women are better than men?

The movement for women’s equality will not survive if it becomes a movement for women’s superiority. The movement against sexual assault will not survive if it becomes a movement for sexual purity.

At this point I can’t tell if the Left is infested with trolls or just really, really dumb.

          • Bananas Foster

I specifically said women weren’t better.

I do think we’re less warlike and sexually harrassy. (Seriously, can you even argue that?)

It’s a thought experiment. What do YOU think it would be like?

          • MC Planck

So it’s not that women are better. They just lack some of the negative qualities of men. Women are exactly equal to men in every way, except for being less negative. But that doesn’t add up to a positive!

I guess this is the new math?

    • Tetman Callis

The war machine would ground to a halt, collapsing the global economy and blowing every fuse at the money laundromat.

      • Bananas Foster

At this point, that sounds like a good thing.

        • Tetman Callis

          Count me in.

    Fuuuuuuuuuck.
I just broke a pint glass. I’m down to one pint glass left in the cabinet.
Stolen from Capitol Brewery, Madison WI. It’s the lone survivor. It has earned a million dollars.

Tell me it wasn’t a full glass. Please tell me that…

      • Roadstergal

        Oh, the humanity!

      • Resistor Radio

Absolutely empty, thank goodness. I banged it with a bottle of Bass as I stumbled from the fridge with a guinness in the other hand. See, I’m a hipster sorta day drunk. Black and tans and sucking down american spirits like an asshole, I started before 10 this morning so I should probably pass out soon. Then wake up after dark full of self-loathing, but hey, self-loathing is like my signature scent.

        • Tetman Callis

“self-loathing is like my signature scent.”

When I was on the same diet you’re on, that was not how my wife described what she smelled downwind of me.

          • Resistor Radio

      • Why not? It fits perfectly fine

      • Daniel

I find straight from the bottle is the best way.

        • Red Richmond

If you weren’t supposed to drink from the bottle the manufacture wouldn’t have made it so easy to do so.

      • jesterpunk

Drink it straight from the bottle right?

        • Shan

          Why dirty a glass?

      • Resistor Radio

I haven’t started in on the vodka yet. I’m thinking bloody marys tomorrow morning.

      • Roadstergal

We have a beautiful bottle of Hanger 1 that a grateful client gave my husband last year. I’m trying to buy cheap-shit rum to not waste it, but it’s so crisp that the liquid level just slowly… keeps… dropping.

I told my husband it’s evaporation.

      • BosGrl

My favorite Irish bar in the late ’80s used to serve us screwdrivers in pint glasses. Almost all vodka.

      • Resistor Radio

Do you remember all the afterschool specials from our youth? Where the alcoholic mom always drank warm vodka from a pint glass while the kids were getting ready for school?

        • Shan

Uh, no. I watched Scooby Doo and Gilligan’s Island reruns.

          • Resistor Radio

Really? I thought we were of the same age and shared a hometown so I thought we’d be subject to the save television programming.

          • Shan

I also watched Zoom and Electric Company, if that gives you another clue…

          • H0mer0

            they were reruns?

          • Resistor Radio

            Ah. Oh. Shit. Well.
Thank you, I loved Scooby Doo too.

          • Shan

Why is Senator Franken not being given the Ethics Committee hearing he requested?

Why are his colleagues throwing him to the wolves?

This is how the GOP beats us.

    • Aaron Wise

      Ask Tom Perez.

    • jesuswasablack

Because rat-fuckers from the GOP are sending in mostly anonymous allegations, and liberal purists are falling right into the trap!

      • Persistent Demme

        THIS!!!

        See, that’s better.

    • johnnyknj

We have met the enemy and he is us.

      • (((Aron)))

        He has always been us.

High ethics are a double edged sword.

    • jesterpunk

He should have the hearing if nothing else to set precedence then take whatever punishment they decide on. Also sign footy pajamas guy up for an ethics investigation too.

      • (((Aron)))

Exactly. These allegations wreak of spuriousness. But they need to be heard out.

And Franken needs to keep that damned seat.

      • MC Planck

I just emailed him that exact concept. He needs an investigation EVEN IF HE’S GUILTY.

We need the precedent. And we need to NOT set the precedent of resigning over anonymous accusations.

If Franken leaves, it is the end of democracy in the USA. Not because of Franken, but because he won’t be the last. Every. Single. Effective. Democrat will be driven from office by anonymous accusations, while known child molesters fill the Republican ranks.

        • jesterpunk

And we know James O’Keefe is willing to have people lie about sexual assaults/ harassment to make liberals look bad.If his group is willing to do it how many other groups would do the same thing.

    • teele

Every GD time, with wild cheering from the far left. THIS is how we end up with “bothsiderism.” THIS is why we can’t have nice politicians, but the GOP can get Satan’s children re-elected to the same posts for 30 year, then replaced with younger spawn who are even more evil. Can’t even deal with this shit anymore.

      • (((Aron)))

Yup. I am beginning to hate the party I moved to after being a hardcore neoconservative in my youth.

Politicking is ugly. Always has been, always will be.

  • Joe Beese
    • tomamitai

      There surely is a devil!

    • leemoder

“…And Jebus threw up down the front of His robe.”

  • Alienist

I will be sorry if Franken resigns. What he has been accused of is wrong, of course. However, he has admitted his bad behavior and expressed remorse. Still, he is a man of intellect and political talent. He is useful to the cause. Surely, there is a way to make sure to voters that he behaves himself and faithfully promotes progressive ideals as he completes his term. If he can show himself honorable and reformed, he could keep his seat. If he shows that he cannot, we get time to choose a better replacement.

I fear we may be “throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”

    • jesuswasablack

He never admitted anything you should read his statements carefully.

      • Alienist

He did in the first accusation.

        • QuirkyGal

No, please go back and read his statement.

He apologized if he hurt Tweeden in any way – but that’s not how he remembered it. He asked for an ethics investigation – and now he most likely won’t get it because a bunch of stupid Democrats chose to fall on their sword.

This will not change the behavior of the GOP – this is a war and the fake moral high ground is not the answer.

          • mfp, all 6s&7s&9s

“…because a bunch of stupid democrats chose to throw him onto a sword”

            ftfy

        • Vagenda and Pee-ara

He said taking a prank photo was a dumb idea. He never said he assaulted anyone. He requested an ethics investigation, which is not the hallmark of a guilty person.

          • (((Aron)))

And yet he has never been given this investigation.

            Why? He deserves a hearing.

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Yes, exactly, he deserves a hearing.

          • Ross Vachon

He deserves the same fate as Louis C.K., Charlie Rose, and Matt Lauer: To crawl away in disgrace. He’s. in the Perverts Hall Of Fame now.

          • Trump? Totes agree!

    • chicken thief

I admit that he actually surprised me with the seriousness that he took the Senate and his responsibilities. But I’m sure that there are other good folk that can hold his seat.

Also too, he doesn’t need to disappear from the face of the earth – he can, and should, still use his voice for the causes he champions.

  • I’m going to miss Franken’s voice on the Senate, but yeah… I know he needs to go. It’s the right thing to do.

I sincerely hope, however, that more women will come out and tell their stories about other congressmen and senators.

    • TakingAmes

I hope he resigns and NAMES NAMES. Everyone he’s ever heard of, from either party, who has settled a harassment lawsuit, or perved on an intern, or anything. Name some fucking names on your way out, Al.

    • MC Planck

If they can force out a Senator with lies (Tweeden’s original accusation was full of lies) and anonymous accusations – while we cannot force out a Senator guilty of child molesting when even his fellow senators agree he is guilty – then it won’t fucking matter how many women tell their stories.

Every story will be the end of a Democratic career. Men will simply stop running as Democratic politicians, because lies and anonymous accusations can always be manufactured.

This is Acorn and Shirley Sherrod all over again. The Left has learned nothing.

  • texcynical

The (DPCSS) Democratic Party Crack Suicide Squad’s moral high ground plus $3 will buy a cup of coffee. Investigate the allegations? Nah. Let’s string ’em up! Then write a strongly worded op-ed about Roy Moore not being a very nice man. You know he’s going to be elected, and the Republicans won’t do dick, right?

    • johnnyknj

You got it. But all our purity police can feel good about a job well done.

      • QuirkyGal

They only helped us lose the 2016 election – so two for two now?

    • Vagenda and Pee-ara

The great news is that Republicans are now moving on to “welfare reform” by making poors piss in a cup to get food stamps, while we shove Franken out the door on zero evidence. It was odd that just as the Franken story dies down, another anonymous woman shows up with a completely implausible story.

  • House0fTheBlueLights

I’ll say it again: Congress-wide, bipartisan investigation, and then all the skeevs have to resign at once. This picking off Dems one at a time is FUCKING BULLSHIT. FUCKING DEMOCRATIC ALABAMA BETTER GET OUT AND FUCKING VOTE NEXT WEEK BECAUSE I WILL BURN THE FUCKING PLACE DOWN IF THEY SEAT MOORE AFTER MAKING US GIVE UP FRANKEN.

    • Resistor Radio

      YES YES YES YES YES
They are using a legitimate issue to make us eat our own as they sit back and laugh. Christ!

    • texcynical

Seating Moore and doing nothing is exactly what they’re going to do.

  • Gorillionaire

Champagne party at Roger Stone’s tonight.

    • Nope. Never gonna party there or with that

      • Resistor Radio

I’ve been to many questionable parties with many a questionable asshole, but christ no way in hell would I party with roger stone. That dude is creepy as fuck. As soon as he shows up in the room, all the fun people will leave. FACT.

    • Persistent Demme

I wonder if he’ll have a special “Ratfucker” cocktail?

  • johnnyknj

Reading these comments is really instructive. Seems that many “progressives” would have quite enjoyed the cultural revolution.

    • Resistor Radio

Can you elaborate? I’m a little bit drunk, sure, but I’m also kinda smart and I’m not sure what you mean.

      • Shan

Probably something about China or Iran.

      • johnnyknj
      • BearDeLaOursistance

He means he’s trolling from Breitbart.

        • Resistor Radio

Oh, cool, then he’s an asshole and can fuck right off.

          • (((Aron)))

(I think you completely missed his point.)

          • johnnyknj

            Thank you.

        • johnnyknj

Hardly. Read my comment history. I’m a card carrying lefty. Just hate mushy thinking and mob justice.

          • BearDeLaOursistance

Fair enough. I think I took the “extreme touchstone” quality of the Cultural Revolution reference and misread it as a cross-aisle caricature.

Even so, that’s a pretty strong albatross to hang on someone. I think there’s perhaps been some rush to judgment, but not of that extremity.

    • Lilah

Ah yes, because purging every aspect of cultural history is the same thing as getting rid of the rapists in our house.

      • johnnyknj

I didn’t know Al Franken was a rapist. Thanks for the heads-up.

        • Lilah

He abused a position of power to commit sexual assault. If ‘assailants’ would make you happier, then I’ll go with that. It wouldn’t surprise me if there are rapists hiding in the wings, however. Firing franken will give more women the safety to come forward.

          • johnnyknj

Ok. I just thought it ironic that you called out my undeniable hyperbole in citing the cultural revolution and the used the term “rapist”.

          • (((Aron)))

            Slapping is not murder.

            ‘Groping’ is not rape.

Purity is not a winning strategy.

            Go away.

          • Lilah

Purity is the only winning strategy. It’s what the (R)’s have been doing for 40 years and it’s worked out pretty well for them.

          • (((Aron)))

How did purity work out for the Democrats back in Nov of 2016?

            QED. See ya!

          • MC Planck

What position of power? What power did he have over his victims?

You really are a purity troll. And surprisingly, you might win.

If Franken resigns, it is the end of democracy in the USA. When you have one party throwing out Senators based on shoddy accusations, and the other party seating Senators who are known to have committed vastly worse crimes, you only have a one-party government.

          • Lilah

Ah stop it with the “purity politics” panic. Of all the ways America would become a one party state, a bunch of 70 year old mostly white dudes loosing power due to their abuse of it is among the least likely. We have an absolutely spectacular new bench to draw from, and they’re all 30-something women who look like America.

          • MC Planck

Decrying the value of expertise seems to be an American trait. All it takes is good intentions and sufficient diversity? Good luck with that.

          • Lilah

“Expertise” brought us the institutional entrenchment of white supremacy and patriarchy. Expert-worship brought us Urban Renewal, and the wars in Vietnam and Iraq. Experts can be good and necessary, but only if they are held to a strong set of community standards.

Also, I see what you did there, conflating whiteness and oldness with expertise. I’m sure there are 20-something black and Latina women who could run America 100x better, and who have more real world “expertise” than the old farts sitting in Washington.

  • Notreelyhelping

Eh. Franken can brood in the wilderness for a while, and then he can come back as a very funny political commentator with the gloves off, just in time for the midterms.

    • (((Aron)))

Or he can get the bloody hearing he requested and be allowed to defend himself.

      • TundraGrifter

If deciding whether Roy Moore is fit to represent Alabama in the US Senate should be left up to the voters, why isn’t deciding if Sen. Al Franken should remain being left up to the Senators?

        • (((Aron)))

He requested a hearing from his fellow senators.

He wants it left up to them. But fair is fair.

      • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

And in the meantime the GOP uses him to drown out everything else – how much coverage have you seen of anything else that has happened today? The GOP is going to do what they always do – work the refs so that all we hear is “Democrat hypocrisy” from now until whenever the Senate Ethics committee gets around to doing shit (and you know the Republicans on that committee are going to make a turtle on Sominex look speedy by comparison).
I want him to have a hearing. I think he’s entitled to one. But at the same time what good is it when the other side will use it as cover for their own perfidy?

        • (((Aron)))

It’s almost as though there was the smell of ratfucking in the air.

        • MC Planck

You think they won’t use his resignation to drown out everything else?

Him resigning makes them right. It validates the claim that all politicians are equally grubby, and therefore they can vote for Moore with a clean conscience.

      • Notreelyhelping

Sometimes, you just can’t put the snake back in the box…so to speak.

        • (((Aron)))

Or he could get the hearing, and be able to face his rather disingenuous accusers.

  • chicken thief

“But is every man over 60 a disgusting pervert?

    Hey! I’m over 60 and I’m not a pervert!!1!!!

*** knowingly does not address the “disgusting” part…

    • Joe Beese

      No, I’m only 50.

  • GlazedHaim

The problem with the Franken resignation is that the StoneZone bullshit is like the Zapruder film of tweets. Let’s debunk it already and let MN find a new Senator or dig in and discover if ratfucking is happening. I KNOW some people are like “puh-leez you privileged man, believe women,” to which I reply “Roger Stone.” I don’t give a shit one way or another if Franken stays or goes, because if the left can’t find educated, articulate people who are as just as capable as some former cocaine enthusiast from an Ivy, there are bigger things to worry about. But I want to know which man is doing the groping.

  • Lilah

What the hell is wrong with you people?? Assault is Assault is Assault, and this is a no-loose situation. Franken will be replaced by a Democrat.

Trump hasn’t me convinced that the only way to win is to wrestle in the mud with the fuckers who want to destroy us, but we can’t do that with people who significantly perpetuate systemic oppression against a marginalized group. Provoke fear, sure. Show the Nazis running over Latino kids with a truck. Show trump as the Klan member he is. Show kids dying. But, for the love of god, don’t force a race to the bottom with who can protect harassers better, you paranoid loons.

    • (((Aron)))

Assault is assault, but a request for a hearing is a request for a hearing.

But thanks for your input Princess Purity Police!

      • Lilah

If you’re a senator, you don’t get that benefit of the doubt. This isn’t a role which is protected by ‘innocent until prove guilty,’ this is a role where ‘you have power, you sure as hell better not even _look_ like you’re abusing it.

Look, you may choose not to believe the 8 credible allegations verified by different reputable sources, but this shit matters. I don’t want to burn Franken at the stake, I simply want to show that folks who abuse positions of power to perpetuate systemic oppression, loose power. At least if you’re a democrat. Maybe the republicans will get with the picture in 20 years or so.

        • (((Aron)))

Must be nice to be pure as the driven snow. But please, sacrifice the country on your own time.

Does the phrase ‘innocent until proven guilty’ mean nothing to you?

          • Lilah

Innocent until proven guilty is a legal concept, so it doesn’t apply in this case. The standard to speak for the people of an entire state is astronomically higher. But sure (if we’re going to apply a ‘no justice in one case until there’s justice in all cases), let’s apply innocent till proven standard just as soon as it’s applied to all black folks in America.

        • GlazedHaim

The problem is that the allegations are, in this case, problematic. And I’m not sure how to verify an anonymous source. Especially three of them.

          • Lilah

We have photographic evidence. We have 8 allegations. Folks who are trying to dismiss them are engaging in paranoid tribalism at its worst.

          • (((Aron)))

That photograph is very vague, to put it mildly.

You have the odor of Roger Stone, locked-account Lilah.

          • Lilah

Ah yes, I’m such a clever ratfucker that I have a profile image in reference to an obscure queer fan theory. Such a clever ratfucker that I’m right now taking a break from writing a 20 page paper on the origins of mass incarceration. Such a clever ratfucker that I have been reading this here mommyblog for three years.

          • (((Aron)))

Ask me if I care about any of those things.

You are a purity troll. That is all that matters.

          • Lilah

How is “Representatives shouldn’t have fucking sexual assaulted anyone during their term” too much purity for you? I’m all for viewing humans as complex beings, but Franken refuses to even contend with his actions.

          • (((Aron)))

(Also too, ‘Star vs the Forces of Evil’ is hardly obscure.)

          • Lilah

Trans Marco as a headcanon exists basically only on leftist trans tumblr. I’m more active there than I am on Disqus, but I don’t like having my profiles linked.

          • GlazedHaim

What was the photo evidence of? That he made a shitty “I’m a creep” pose? And he’s responded to the allegations by saying it didn’t happen. At the same time, we know there’s a guy with foreknowledge of the initial allegation who is the poster child for “dirty tricks.” A formal review sends as strong a message as an unconditional resignation.

          • (((Aron)))

            But that isn’t good enough!

We demand blood! The Berners must be assuaged!

          • Lilah

You really think that the Purity-pushers in the Bernie camp (many of whom were accurately accused of misogyny) are the ones pushing for this?

          • covfefesumgame0005

no photo of “assault”, you can see shadows under his fingers so no contact was made, as well others who were there say she was awake and pretending to go along with the “joke”

          • (((Aron)))

            DEPTH PERCEPTION LIBELZ!!!

          • Ross Vachon

LOL. And, she luved his “wet and slimy lips” too!

      • Princess Erika the Radiant

please refrain from using Princess as an insult

you don’t want to get the Royal Order of Attorney-Princesses after you!

        • (((Aron)))

          Yeah, that wouldn’t end well.

But at least I might be able to finally meet you in person! (From the other table in front of the judge.)

    • blaid droog

      Misspelled lose.

      • (((Aron)))

        Go fuck yourself, Jew-hater.

    • MC Planck

Has Franken confessed to assault? Has any independent investigation found credible evidence of assault? All we have are the accusers words so far. Note that for every other case, we have more than just accusations.

Why doesn’t that difference matter in Franken’s case?

If we manage to make a world in which women are only sexually assaulted after asking a man to touch or kiss them, I for one would find that an improvement. I would like an improved world. I don’t think a perfect world is possible.

  • Serolf Divad

You know, I hate to be the contrarian but:

Donald Trump is still president. Moore will probably be the next Senator from Alabama. Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a blow job.

Republicans have smartly viewed politics as “war by other means.” They have no problem with hypocrisy. They have no problem with demagoguery. They have no problem with a child molester in the Senate if it allows them to advance their policy goals.

Democrats are likely about to lose one of their most popular and charismatic Senators here. He was a funny guy, with pointed critiques of Republican policy, and good on talk shows. Democrats are showing him the door in an insane act of purification by fire.

Republicans have the Presidency, the House, the Senate, the Supreme Court, a tax bill that will further enrich the 1% and potentially lead to the eventual elimination of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid when the national debt is so bloated that it becomes clear “we just can’t afford these entitlements any more,”

Democrats on the other hand will be as pure and clean and untainted as a virgin bar of 99.99% Ivory Soap. And they’ll have nothing else to show for it. And as it glides into irrelevance, the party will continue to be represented by dull slate of octogenarian widowers and spinsters, seemingly plucked straight out of a Tennessee Williams play, struggling for words as they try to defend righteous policies against younger, cleverer, wittier, more dynamic and well funded opponents.

By all means, fall on your swords. It’s not like anyone else will get hurt.

    • FeloniousMonk

Anthony Weiner was even better on the talk shows, the guy was a star. True story.

    • janecita

Right?! They are being ridiculous with this shit.

    • Lilah

Pure, clean, and untainted as Bill Clinton playing the sax in front of Ricky Ray Rector? Pure Clean and Untainted as Obama, deporter in chief? Democrats have a long way to go before we’re pure clean and untainted. The republicans are dominant today because we refused to “fall on our swords” for unions, for black folks, for immigrants. It hasn’t worked. Maybe this will.

      • (((Aron)))

        BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

      • tomamitai

We don’t need to fall on OUR swords, we need to sharpen them and use them to fell our FOES…with votes.

        • Lilah

Sounds good to me. No purity in the way we fight. Only the kiss of (political) death (With Votes)

          • tomamitai

“No purity in the way we lose” — FTFY!

          • Lilah

Purity is not a monopolar quantity. Sticking up for marginalized people is non-negotiable. Making the (R)’s look like the monsters they are is.

          • tomamitai

Believing that any good will come to marginalized people from Franken leaving the Senate takes way more faith than I have.

          • Red Bird

What part of Russia are you from?

          • Lilah

A gulag in Siberia. You really think that Daddy Vladi would hire me, a radical, anti-authoritarian Trans Queer Jew? I mean, of course there’s nothing I can do to prove I’m not a dog, but if you assume anyone who doesn’t agree is a Russian shill, you completely shut down avenues for discourse online. That’s part of the reason they’re doing it.

          • Red Bird

Hey, if you have a good message to give then don’t let an innocent question bother you. Just don’t read too much into what others say so you don’t end up answering questions that weren’t asked.

    • blaid droog

If the dimocrats gave a flying fuck about winning, they would not finance former Republican assholes to run as dimocratic candidates.

    • Red Bird

That certainly explains why most Republican voters are old white men.

  • hudson

dems will sacrifice power for country, gop will sacrifice country for power. same difference. both sides do it. both sides are shifty bastards.

    • FeloniousMonk

See TARP, Stimulus, Affordable Care Act. Make tough choices, get rewarded with an “enthusiasm gap” among the very voters who should be the most grateful.

      • CripesAmighty

That’s because they’d are geeky, nuanced policies that have a huge effect.
Poking your finger in the eye of someone you hate is so much easier to understand and great fun for people who tortured small animals behind the kindergarten playground.

      • hudson

no. seriously. enthusiasm gap is a polite way to put it. i would call them in-grateful ingrates.

        • Red Bird

I would call them closet racists.

  • Non-Threatening Ron

I still say, Franken leaves the Senate the SECOND Donnie leaves the White House.

    • chicken thief

Is it possible that that is what Franken announces tomorrow after giving a full apology for his acts and commending the women for coming forward?

      • Non-Threatening Ron

Maybe. It’d be an excellent platform for such a statement, and puts the GOP under the microscope.

      • (((Aron)))

Crom, but I hope he has the courage to say that.

        • MC Planck

He has the courage. But he cannot stand alone. His colleagues have already thrown him under the bus.

Democrats want fighters, but every time the Right comes after a Dem, the rest of the Dems run away. They did it to Obama, they did it to Hillary.

When you’re in the game to demonstrate how pure you are, actual politics takes a distant second.

  • Gayer Than Thou

I don’t have anything smart or insightful to say. I have … feelings. The same feelings, more or less, that you all have. Everything I try to say to myself to excuse Franken or Conyers makes me mad at myself for saying it, while at the same time I am super mad at the GOP in a futile kind of way. Wednesday starts with a W, and that’s like an M upside down, and M is for Martini. So that’s where I’m at. Or will be, as soon as Martini o’clock rolls around. (Which, yes, is a joke that makes me A Old who is no longer relevant, pace whatever that young hip blog is that decided Wonkette is irrelevant.) Mostly here for communion.

    • Fivedollarfeminist

      Thank you.

    • MC Planck

I still don’t think Franken did anything wrong. Literally.

He interacted with a peer, he accidentally touched a woman or three during a selfie, and he fondled a woman’s waist while posing for selfie.

FFS, if you don’t want to be groped by Al Franken, all you have to do is NOT ask him for a selfie! Or appear with him on stage doing a script that requires him to kiss you.

As sexual predators go, that seems pretty… tame.

  • Marsupial99

Conyers, Franken, Seder: If you think they aren’t connected, you are naive. The GOP found something even better than winning elections: Democratic resignations. I am no longer optimistic for 2018 or 2020, because I see where this is going.

In this case: It’s NOT OK If You’re A Republican, but it doesn’t matter. They don’t care. And I fear this “great comeback” we think we’re going to get in 2018 isn’t going to happen. They know we can’t defend against these plays, and they are going to run them over, and over, and over. To our side, we are doing the “right” thing, going high, etc. To their side, all the Democrats are resigning because they are guilty, guilty, guilty, unlike the Republicans, who stayed and fought, and then got a filibuster proof super-majority!

I’m not sure I can do this anymore. I think I need a break.

    • johnnyknj

As I said before “they bring a gun, we bring a hankie”. And they know it.

      • C4TWOMAN

This is the Crux. Bringing hankies to gun fights. Democrats need to wake up to the fact no one is fighting fair or by the rules, then ask why.
The also need to step back and figure out why democracy in the USA is broken and focus on fixing that.
But right now many continue to play defense. Losing Franken etc hurts politically, but turn it into a strength, to hammer for political and cultural change.
Want to know how to sound? Don’t Jones has it down. Also too we are no longer in the age of Obama…we can’t afford to go high when they go low. When they go low, we need to crush them.

        • (((Aron)))

Literally: they go low enough that we can crush them with our heels.

        • Lilah

Agreed. Keeping on assailents isn’t the right way to go low though. I want to see a version of ‘American Nightmare’ played on every TV set in America.

        • Red Bird

They don’t play by the rules because the rules don’t apply to them. And, they aren’t interested in democracy or what everyone wants. They want what they want.

      • redblack

i hear you, but i can’t upvote this.

we have numbers. we can fight back without compromising our values.

i.e. when we show up, they lose.

show up. be present. be vocal. vote.

        and bring friends.

ignore their bullshit, belittle their hypocrisy, and ridicule their “values.”

    • Red Bird

      That’s exactly what is happening.

    • MC Planck

We want Dems who fight! But not so much that they hold hearings to clear their names.

  • covfefesumgame0005

sorry, but I have not heard one credible thing Al has done that should mean he is a “pervert”. hell the latest one is (another) anonymous woman saying he put his arm around her waist! OMG run run run! seriously, Leeann has issues with her memory and the others sound more like accidental contacts due to being pressed up in a clump around him demanding selfies with him

    • (((Aron)))

Thus the hearing. Guilty men do not typically request such things.

      • Ross Vachon

The Ethics Committee is toothless. And, Froggy may have convinced himself that he could ride out Tweedon and one more. But, now there are 7 and it’s clear he really has a serious problem with women, has had one his whole life. No self-respecting girl/woman ever kissed Al Franken willingly and it engendered within him a bilious hatred of women. Good riddance.

        • Out of Patience

He has been married for 40 years and had kids. Somebody kissed him.

          • (((Aron)))

            Is that troll STILL here?

        • redblack

go back to breitbart, you shit-stirring troll. you have no facts or evidence in the matter, so you can fuck right off.

        • Captain Kraut

You’ll certainly be surprised to learn that many women find humor to be an attractive quality in a mate.

          Or so I’ve heard.

        • The Person.

Gee, what ulterior motive might you have?

        • miss_grundy

Al Franken has been married to his wife for a very long time. And if Franken has been involved in wrong-doing, why didn’t it come out during his first run for the senate or during his re-election campaign. Why wait until now?

  • blaid droog

The dimocrats own the concept of shooting themselves in the gonads. Since the thugs don’t care about the evil within their party, I don’t care about any misdeeds done by dimocrats. Franken could be accused of raping Ann Frank on the steps of the nearest temple and I would still be on his side. The dimocrats holier than the Republicans attitude will do nothing more than guarantee the permanency of the rethug reich.

    • (((Aron)))

      Fuck you, Jew-hater.

      Get off this site.

(PS Love that reference to raping Anne Frank. Keep up your Holocaust belittlement. You will burn.)

      • C4TWOMAN

        I think he’s a species of concern troll, actually…

        • (((Aron)))

No, he is a bizarre strain of purity troll. Go check out what he wrote last night re: Auschwitz.

          • C4TWOMAN

            Ah. Which thread? Scroll down?

          • (((Aron)))
          • amrak63

Can’t. I blocked the son of a bitch long ago.

          • (((Aron)))

            I just blocked him now.

Someone stated that the Jewish people should have one holy place in the world.

            He recommended Auschwitz.

(Of course, after advocating the nuclear destruction of Israel.)

Now he is saying that he would still defend Senator Franken even if he had been accused of raping ‘Ann’ Frank on her doorstep. Now I’m a supporter of Senator Franken, and I very much hope he doesn’t resign tomorrow, instead doubling down on his demand for an investigation.

            But this was too far.

I pointed out his delightfully Holocaust minimization.

Then he attacked me and I blocked him.

          • Bangkok Taxi

Not everyone is enamoured of “Jews”
            And, why should anyone be.
All of my life its been the whole ‘horrors of what they went through therefore one has no ground to say diddle against them without being an accused Nazi sympathiazing anti semite.

Guess what? Horse shit on that. I understand droogs sentiments-as an understandable, if not snarky hyperbolic reaction to all that,

With the whole “we are Gawds chosen people” banner one sets oneself up for some serious blowback.
Add to that some of the crap Isreal has engaged in as a forever “embattled and belegured “ peoples and it becomes no wonder a growing chorus of folks are like, not all enamoured of ”jews”

Jews jews gotta love them jews. Why exactly?

          • (((Aron)))

            Well, there it is.

          • (((Aron)))

            So am I tone deaf?

      • MC Planck

Er.. I didn’t take his Anne Frank comment as a sign of anti-semitism. He was saying that even if Franken did the worst thing possible, he would still support him. That he thinks this crime is among the worst possible shows that he thinks of Anne Frank as a human being.

I haven’t read any other comments, so there may be context I don’t know about. But this comment alone seems to be agreeing with your position.

EDIT: OK, so I read the comment about Auschwitz. I guess he’s just so incompetent that even when he’s being anti-semitic, he does it so badly that sometimes it doesn’t even look like anti-semitism.

    • C4TWOMAN

Yeah because taking morality lessons from Nazi collaborators, pedos and traitors is going to accomplish so much….

    • anon_the_great

I’d call you a motherfucker but that would be an insult to the swine that birthed you.

    • redblack

yeah, god forbid we should have some semblence of values or altruism. what the fuck, man? you think we can’t beat dirty fighters without compromising our values?

      • (((Aron)))

We tried playing nice. We tried playing moral.

Now it is time to play to win.

        • redblack

in my view, we can be nice, we can be moral, and we can also focus like a fucking laser on the crooked dicks who currently control policy in our country – and burn them down.

these are not mutually exclusive ideas.

          • (((Aron)))

            I agree.

However, you know how to stop an oil rig fire?

          • redblack

all right. i admire your passion.

i’m just saying that if the accused really are creepers, they’re not getting a pass from me just because (D).

          • (((Aron)))

I don’t want to give anyone a pass. But I also acknowledge there are degrees of things. I would say the same thing about a similarly honorable Republican, few as they are these days.

          • Gwoss.

          • James

You keep saying that over and over. Have you gathered more pity points from your ‘friends’ today? It is somewhat touching that they pity you for being a mental cripple. I just look upon it as what it is…bad genetics….inferior genes.
I know many people have told you things like “it’s ok. You don’t have to let your mental issues limit you. You can do or be anything you want.” They lie. You are limited. Even Alan knows this. That is why he apologized when you said that your Aspergers was interfering with you interpreting his intended point the other day. He apologized and said that he sometimes forgets. No, he doesn’t. I will translate what he REALLY meant with that ‘apology’. He was thinking about how annoying it is to have to slow everything down for the village re-tard (you).

          • You are a sad, strange little man. You have nothing better to do than harass people and call people “retard”.

Flagged for harassment. Find a better hobby, Basement Nazi.

Lol. Once again your condition rears its head. Keep replying to me and I will keep replying to you, retard. Notice that none of your “friends” are any longer replying to me and thus I am no longer replying to them. Think long and hard about that. You are slow and have serious mental retardation issues. You are a cripple.

          • Because they blocked you, asswipe.

And as long as you continue to harass them I will continue to flag you. You are a vain, insecure Basement Nazi, and you have my pity.

            Flagged for harassment.

          • James

Who am I harassing? I am not posting to them and they are not posting to me. The truth is that they are at least socially devolved. You are incapable of grasping that concept. This is why you will never be a lawyer or any type of professional and you will never have a family or a normal relationship with a woman. They have moved on. You haven’t, of course they don’t have mental retardation issues.

          • Yes, you were posting to them. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have replied to you in the first place. You are a miserable imbecile.

            Flagged and reported.

when we show up, they lose. VA was a great example of that.

and while i fully admit that we’re sorely lacking in great examples, i’d like to point out that VA was an off-year election. dem turnout in off-year elections is historically low and apathetic. but the people showed up (a quick google shows the highest VA voter turnout in 20 years) and dems ruled the day. i think – i sure as fuck *hope* – that people are waking up.

we have to show up and keep showing up and keep showing up and keep showing up even after they get sick of us showing up.

So, you dont cotton to the purity left?
      How DARE you.

  • Belasaurius

Whether Franken leaves or not should be up to the people of Minnesota

    • (((Aron)))

      Ding!

    • puredog

I’m kind of struggling with this. And this is different from saying that Moore’s being seated or not should not be up to the voters of Alabama? Don’t get me wrong, I have loathed Moore for YEARS before he was a household turd, but I am looking for a principled distinction, even though I realize that the allegations against Moore are much more serious than the allegations against Franken.

  • GlazedHaim

I’m done with this, because I’m wary of putting too much time in to defending Franken if it turns out he did any of this. BUT shit like this is what makes me very uncomfortable (Stone’s habit of pushing unsubstantiated sexual assault claims to attacks dems):

    https://www.snopes.com/bill-clinton-expelled-from-oxford/

    • redblack

republicans do have a nasty habit of tying sexual misconduct allegations to democrats, whether they’re true or not. years later, if those accusations turn out to be manufactured or the accused is vindicated, no one notices. the accusation becomes attached to the name.

but if these accusations are true, then the creepers deserve the vote firing squad. creeping is anathema to liberal values. it has no fucking place in our interactions with each other. it serves no fucking purpose, except to demean and subjugate other people.

i’ve expressed my feelings on creepers in a couple of threads now, and i unequivocally condemn anyone who takes unconsensual liberties because he has fame, money, or power. i am and always will be an advocate and friend to any woman who has ever been victimized by any swaggering jackass who thinks that the world should be sympathetic to his psychological and/or sexual insecurities. some guys – a lot of guys – all they think about is fucking. i think it’s a mental disorder that speaks to their inadequacies. it’s juvenile, stupid, and disrespectful. it’s base.

when flirting, playing, and sex are consensual, those things are beautiful and fun. when they’re not, those acts are offensive at the least, and criminal at the worst. the perps should be pilloried. defending or excusing that behavior is worse.

i’ve said my piece, not that anyone should give a shit. from here on out, i’m going to keep my trap about this crap shut until facts are presented.

      • (((Aron)))

Exactly. There have been no facts presented yet, only hearsay.

        • Bangkok Taxi

          WORD 1K squared.
Assumption of innocence, proof beyond reasonable doubt, facing ones accusers, ( none of this anonymous stuff) exclusion of hearsay etc etc,,,, is not perfect but generally better than, “ credible accusers” or believe the assaulted.

    • Ricky-pus gutted tub of guts

      Only thing I will add:
If anyone would willfully weaponize unsubstantiated claims of sexual harassment and do damage to the credibility of the #metoo movement, it would be a GOP operative.

  • I am very sad to see Franken go. Nonetheless, I do hope the people who a few weeks ago were yelling that the FOX News woman was lying because she was a FOX News Woman, and also slutty like a common slut, will check themselves at this point.

    • MC Planck

Franken is the only one who called for an investigation.

Isn’t that the actions of an innocent man?

Why can’t we have an investigation? Every other case has an investigation. Moore was investigated. Conyers was investigated. Only Franken is being held accountable without an independent investigation of any kind.

      Why does this not matter?

      • WhittakerWalt

Because those investigations take forever and they never get anywhere. Franken would be the first one to tell you that.

        • (((Aron)))

And yet he still requested one.

          The others did not.

That is not the action of a guilty man.

          • WhittakerWalt

He may not think of himself as a guilty man, but because he didn’t feel like his actions were wrong.

          • (((Aron)))

Or possibly because those actions never actually happened.

          • WhittakerWalt

            That seems extremely unlikely.

          • (((Aron)))

            I disagree.

            But that’s ok!

          • WhittakerWalt

Do you actually believe Franken has done NONE of the things he’s been accused of, and is just resigning because “mob rules” or something?

          • (((Aron)))

I think that is entirely possible.

          • WhittakerWalt

If he was a Republican, you’d believe the women.

          • (((Aron)))

That’s a lovely strawman, but no.

If it was a Republican with a reputation as utterly unimpeachable as Al Franken’s (sadly too few and far between these days,) I would believe him over the very suspicious accusers.

But I love how you are now attacking me! Thank you for playing directly into Steve Bannon’s and Roger Stone’s hands.

          • WhittakerWalt

            That was not an attack.

          • (((Aron)))

            Yes. It was.

And it was a pathetic strawman fallacy.

Which is why I am done with you.

          • WhittakerWalt

I’m sorry you’re done. I’m not trying to make it personal.
I just think too many of us give Al Franken a pass, based on his “good reputation.” If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the #METOO movement, it’s that having a good reputation doesn’t actually mean anything.
Who had a better reputation than Bill Cosby? Practically no one. He was America’s Dad. He was beloved. He was perfect. And he’s a monster.
            That’s what I’m saying.

          • (((Aron)))

Except Bill Cosby’s accusers had evidence. And lots of it.

            Al Franken’s have none.

          • WhittakerWalt

You think every one of the women is lying? Why would they ALL do that?

          • (((Aron)))

            Ratfucking.

Now I am done with you.

          • WhittakerWalt

I don’t understand why that’s a hard question to answer.

          • (((Aron)))

I gave you an answer. And now I am blocking you.

            Good bye.

          • WhittakerWalt

Wait… were you saying I was ratfucking? Or was that the answer to why the women would lie?
Anyway, guess I’ve been blocked. It felt like a good faith discussion, but maybe that’s too challenging for you.

        • MC Planck

What a novel assault on the very idea of objective truth.

I guess we can close down the courts. All we need is Twitter.

          • WhittakerWalt

Straw man. Like, HUGE straw man.
            But whatever works for you.

          • (((Aron)))

And yet that’s exactly what you just did to me.

            Hmmmmmm….

      • the simple answer is: if franken stays, the left cannot go after moore.

that’s the math and it sucks.

        • (((Aron)))

I very much disagree. Senator Franken personally requested to be investigated. Why has that not happened yet?

          • that’s not my point and i totally agree with you. he should have his day in court (and as a theatre veteran i see NOTHING in his behavior that i haven’t seen everywhere all the time in my louche world for the last 20 years. not an excuse. just a fact.).

my point is: franken (and conyers) out frees up the dems to do whatever to moore – and more importantly – pres peestain. they have the moral highground.

(btw: as it’s not clear from my avatar of, i’m a chick).

          • (((Aron)))

I totally get what you’re saying. But I genuinely believe that no matter what happens with any of the accused Democrats, the Trumpkins will never give us the moral high ground. So we must take it by force. It is the only thing they understand.

          • MC Planck

Of what value is the moral high ground?

After watching Trump get elected, and watching Moore in the process of getting elected, I honestly want to know: who do you think the moral high ground matters to?

I mean, I like the moral high ground. I think we should occupy it! But I can’t understand why you think it has any tactical value in today’s politics.

          • mfp, all 6s&7s&9s

with all the crimes trump has committed, why would the dems even need to use the sex-pervert angle to go after trump?….if that’s what they think they need to being him down, they’re stupider and more politically incompetent than i think they are

        • MC Planck

That math only works if Franken’s crimes = Moore’s crimes. But they are not equal. Not legally, not morally, not psychologically, not objectively, not even remotely.

How can you not see this? Or are you operating off of the rule that if we have even a speck of dust in our eye, we dare not call out the beam in other’s eyes?

If the only people who can oppose injustice are the morally perfect, there will be no one to oppose injustice.

        • mfp, all 6s&7s&9s

they can go adpfter moore all they want…he will be elected, seated, and STAY in the republican senate

    • (((Aron)))

      Franken hasn’t gone, yet.

    • Out of Patience

She was lying. I don’t care what happens that woman is a liar.

    • Bangkok Taxi

      “My accuser” “my guy”

    • Jennaratrix

They won’t; they aren’t in this very thread. If anything, they’ve dug in harder. The only thing that disappoints me more than Franken having to resign is the people who don’t understand why he has to resign, and who are continuing to scream about the end of the Democratic party for the unforgivable sin of having standards and then sticking to them when push comes to shove.

      • mfp, all 6s&7s&9s

it would be easier to take if the dem party had standards before, say…last week

  • Gomez

Franken should stand up tomorrow and say “I leave when Trump leaves”

    • Bangkok Taxi

      Hmmm…

  • Ron Spangler

There is almost certainly a double standard. Democrats resign; Republicans blame Democrats and stay.

    • Bangkok Taxi

      Stay and get elected.
      ‘Purity left’ comes to mind.

  • JustDon’tSayProbably

I’m also a little sad that the Conyerses see that House seat as some kind of family heirloom. Machine politics can be a really bad thing.

    • Bangkok Taxi

Reminds me of the recent Mugabe thing where his wife was floated as assuming the post.

      • JustDon’tSayProbably

That might be going a little far.

        • Bangkok Taxi

Oh now, I wasnt putting him on par with Mugabe, but, the assumption that just by blood relation someone is imbued in anyway with right or qualification to step into
a position speaks to a hubris oft seen in politicos since before dirt

  • puredog

“Fucking hell” is all that need be said, and so I will say no more.

  • ltmcdies

Al Franken has been a talented and effective leader but that’s over regardless of whether he stays or goes. In the #MeToo era yah just can’t say…. we believe the assaulted except the ones saying it was “my guy”

And it’s not like there aren’t any number of talented take no shit Dems
Many of them women, maybe it’s time to really highlight them

    Here’s just one

    https://youtu.be/h2B00vqD4zI

    • (((Aron)))

Or he could just get his damned hearing and best his accusers.

      How about that?

      • Bangkok Taxi

Me too, credible accusers, believe the “assaulted”or that ol standby, proof beyond reasonable doubt.

        • Stinky_Hole

But all of them resigning will make us pure. Mere humans with faults aren’t good enough. Only the pure will do.
Can’t have any hearings – they’ve been accused, so out they go.

        • Red Bird

Have you noticed that only the some of the accused are resigning? What about Farenthold?

      • ltmcdies

he’s damaged…no hearing is going to change it now. It’s going to be long time if ever, that Frankin could get back to being that stand out questioner who could make a GOPer squirm in a hearing. Yes IT Sucks.

        But it’s sucking changes nothing.

        • (((Aron)))

Nope. He can use that to his advantage.

Make them squirm even more because he beat his false accusers.

          • ltmcdies

            including this one
            http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/30/politics/al-franken-groping-allegation/index.html
hey, I agree it sucks. but it is what it is.

          • (((Aron)))

So then he doesn’t deserve a hearing, does he?

          • ltmcdies

so who runs these hearings, with the GOP majority within both chambers.

          • (((Aron)))

The GOP. And he could crush them with evidence.

However he took the not-quite-coward’s way out.

  • Hiam J Beaudry

Kamala Harris is now on my shit list.

Anybody else next time. Anybody but this spineless toady.

    • Dept. of Space Tacos

      and why exactly?

      • (((Aron)))

Because she caved to the GOP ratfuckers.

        • Bangkok Taxi

          Really? Where, how?

          • (((Aron)))

The ratfuckers want Franken to resign. She acquiesced without even realizing it.

          • miss_grundy

So did Gillenbrand. If any of the Democrats who decided to push Franken out today want to run for even higher office, they better start thinking about how the GOP loves to screw over (ratfuck) their opponents and stop falling for that ploy. While we are throwing out our best and brightest, the GOP has a sexual harasser in the Oval Office and will have a pedophile representing Alabama in the Senate. And they probably have more men who have assaulted/harassed/groped women.

          • (((Aron)))

I am so incredibly disappointed in that set. I admire them all, and I think they can do better.

          • MC Planck

Gillenbrand actually said he deserved a hearing, but should resign without one.

That can only mean one thing. She’s afraid of the negative press she and the Dems will get while Al tries to clear his name.

That’s a real profile in courage there. Give up before the fight and hope they are gentle with prisoners.

(Note: the above is sarcasm. Real courage would be demanding Al get a hearing, and then frying him if he was guilty.)

  • Paperless Tiger

Oh well. Probably as good a time as any for Democrats to clean house since they’re out of power anyway. Let the Republicans be the party of perverts. They earned it.

    • (((Aron)))

Still waiting for proof that he is a pervert.

And yeah, let’s totally make things easier for the Republicans!

      • Lilah

Ah yes, the elusive “proof.” You’re like one of those moms in that NYT story who are sobbing about how their poor little boys were suspended because they raped someone “he may not have been falsely accused, but he was wrongly accused.” Women don’t lie about this shit. And when they try, it’s found out real quick. We have no reason to doubt these women except rank partisanship.

        • MC Planck

          I’m just gonna block you.

      • BreakingDeadMen

Tina DuPuy in The Atlantic is the nail. Ratfcking or not, this is credible:
        https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/12/i-believe-frankens-accusers-because-he-groped-me-too/547691/

        • (((Aron)))

So then let’s have that hearing.

If he is guilty, he will face the appropriate punishment. If he is not, so much the better.

        • MC Planck

Are you serious? Tina Dupey accuses him of *grabbing her waist.” When she was posing for a selfie.

This is what it has come to. She can drape her arm across his shoulder and he as to grin and bear it; but if he puts his arm around her waist he is a sexual pervert.

          It’s over, kids. Sorry.

  • Bangkok Taxi

Credible accusers? According to who exactly?
    Hearsay, innuendo, lies.

  • eyelashviper

Somehow I think back to how Eliiot Spitzer was forced out over having relations with a prostitute, just at the time when he had compiled serious allegations against Wall Street crooks when he was NYS AG.
Al just happens to be the bulldog who goes after lying cheating Gopers and doesn’t wimp out like too many Dems.

  • The Person.

Did somebody light the Troll Beacon atop Castle Anthrax????

    • (((Aron)))

      Zoot must be punished!

      • The Person.

        Evil wicked naughty Zoot!

        • (((Aron)))

You must tie her down on a bed and spank her! With votes!

  • Pat_Pending

I’m not a Franken apologist, but I feel like this is a bit of overkill. Or jumping the shark. Buuuuut, I suppose with Moore on the way in, unless there’s a miracle (there’s no miracles), that there has to be a zero tolerance policy on stupid behavior. I just can’t square Franken with a child molester or assholes who have paid off women to shut them up.

    • Agreed. If anyone’s getting railroaded here, it’s Franken. He’s the only Accused so far who’s shown any contrition at all.

      • MC Planck

He is the only accused who asked for an investigation.

His own colleagues agreed he deserved one, but suggested he resign anyway.

They’re just terrified that the RIght-Wing noise machine will come for them next. And they’re right! It will!

  • I’m going to toss some names out here, and not tell you anything about them, other that they are connected in a way relevant to this discussion:

    Emma Sulkowicz
    Crystal Gail Mangum
    Victoria Price and Ruby Bates
    Carolyn Bryant

Let’s not see any repeats here, OK? If we’re going to take all the accusations at face value, shouldn’t the Accused get some similar respect and be allowed to defend themselves?

    • (((Aron)))

      ED ZACHARY.

      You also forgot Tawana Brawley.

    • The Person.

Agree, but I urge caution here. Trust but verify is a better approach IMO

Edit: I’ve known too many actual rape victims to dismiss accusations without investigating.

  • Harbinger08

I’d like to see how the Republicans and Fox would react if one of theirs was accused of grabbing a woman’s waist during a requested photo. I’d like to see the Democrats that had the brazen balls to try make a scandal out of it. I’d like to see the news networks that would play along. Fat chance.

  • Red Bird

This whole thread seems to have an infestation of “liberal” “progressives” who “care about the Democrats”.

    • The Person.

Kinda like the Bernie Bros. (TM ) back in ’16.

      • BreakingDeadMen

2016 is never dead. It’s not even past.

        • dshwa

Past is prologue. Just wait till K. Harris waxes him him the 2020 primaries.

    • (((Aron)))

Why, because some of us believe a man is not guilty? And we aren’t prepared to throw the vegan babby anus out with the bathwater?

    • (((Aron)))

      Now I get it.

Yeah, there do seem to be a whole bunch of concern trolls about. Can’t say I’m surprised.

  • BreakingDeadMen

How many times during the Bush/Yoo era did you hear “What’s wrong with Abu Grahib? Al Qaeda is doing worse things to our soldiers.” Well, we are supposed to have higher standards, that’s why it’s wrong. Fuck Trump and Moore, they can wallow in it. We need to walk the talk; they can be deranged sociopaths, we shouldn’t be. I defended Al initially because there is a ratfcking element to it. Tweeden told a story that was sensationalized, but she knew that there were others out there, and this would bring them out. Well played, dishonestly or not. Tina Dupuy is credible, damn it. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/12/i-believe-frankens-accusers-because-he-groped-me-too/547691/

    • (((Aron)))

So then let him face her in the hearing, as he has requested. Innocent until proven guilty is still a thing in this country.

      • BreakingDeadMen

If Al wants to do that, if Al says it’s all wind and sails, I support his right to do it. But tomorrow I expect him to come out and give a mea culpa and resign, which I would also support.

        • (((Aron)))

          Nope. Not going to happen.

He has a right to face his accusers. I expect him to exercise that right.

          • BreakingDeadMen

I do not. We’ll find out tomorrow.

          • Lilah

Ah yes, let’s retraumatize the victims. So *progressive,* much feminism, wow

          • MC Planck

Turning Franken into a monster will destroy the femnist cause.

No politician will pose with a woman for a selfie after this. No man will work alone at night with one. No man will risk his career on a woman complaining about his behavior decades later.

Feminism is over after this. Roy Moore will take his seat, and all future accusations of sexual misconduct will be met with a shrug. Once the standard becomes impossible it stops being a standard.

          • Lilah

If the standard “don’t grope women” is too high a bar for men, then perhaps men shouldn’t be in power.

Also Tooo: this is delusional, paranoid fearmongering.

          • Or you know men might think before harassing. I mean, can men not pose for a selfie or walk with a woman or fly with an unconscious one without taking liberties?

          • MC Planck

I have a fantasy that Al comes out on stage and says, “I will resign… after an Ethics committee investigation recommends that I do so.”

Dems want fighters, right? Al should stand up and fight these charges, demand that he get a chance to clear his name.

But he won’t. His colleagues have already thrown him under the bus, terrified of the Right Wing Noise machine, and the very people that bitched about their cowardice yesterday and will do so again tomorrow are now cheering their abject surrender.

I think this was the last gasp of democracy in the USA. Far too many people make their political decisions based on emotion.

  • Old Man Yells at Cloud

And with a Republican Governor in Michigan, this is why the Democrats lose.

    • (((Aron)))

      YUUUUP

    • Lilah

You.. you do realize that Minnesota is a different state than Michigan, right?

      • Do not be too harsh. They are reeling right now.

      • Old Man Yells at Cloud

Yes, I do. In fact, I have seen Al Franken draw both of them when he draws a map of the US. However, just like your comment, that has nothing to do with the fact that Conyers is from Michigan. I was referring to Conyers and not Franken.

Conyers is a pig and should not be in the Senate, but to simply hand his seat over to the Republicans is F’ing insane. He should run out the clock on his term and the party should have his replacement lined up and already running.

By contrast, the Republicans are welcoming a child molester into the Senate so that they get the vote while Democrats are trying to drive out Franken based on allegations without an investigation. If they succeed, then the party really does deserve to lose. And Franken won’t be the last one. Once the Republicans see that the Democrats will dump one of their own over allegations, its going to happen over and over.

  • Heyzeus Ahchay

Al Franken should resign when Fox stops inviting Newt Gingrich and Bill O’Reilly to lie on TV. Ailes would be invited to talk to Hannity if he wasn’t dead.

  • MC Planck

“Democrats probably shouldn’t have a groping pervert in the caucus”

So that’s it? Franken is a groping pervert based on the accusations of a right-wing ratfucker, a few anonymous selfie-posters, and a woman whom complained he grabbed her waist? Franken is worse than Moore, who at least had the decency to call his accusers liars? And that’s why Moore gets a Senate seat and Franken has to give up his?

    Is that the Wonkette consensus?

Acorn. Shirley Sherrod. Hillary Clinton. All they have to do is accuse, and the Left surrenders. Then the Left complains bitterly that none of their politicians will fight.

    It’s over, kids. Sorry.

    • Lilah

ACORN was surrendered because the Dems didn’t care enough about giving a voice to black folks. This is a different issue.

Sexual assault an oppressive act. It is antithetical to the goals of progressivism. Don’t cave when they call you mean, don’t cave when they accuse you of a racial conspiracy. But if you’ve assaulted someone, you don’t deserve to represent the local dog catcher.

      Your paranoid ramblings are boring.

I’m just a progressive gal procrastinating on her essay who thinks that men shouldn’t be able the get away with what they’ve always gotten away with, and has the audacity to hope that the Democratic Party can be part of that change.

My loudness is just an expression of my shock that so few of the progressives on this here mommyblog are willing to believe the women when it’s ‘our guy.’

Lady MS, empowered by her advanced age and some juice of the grape, has the following to contribute…POTUS is a self-confessed pussy-grabber and oft-accused sexual predator. Roy Moore wafted a 14 yo out of a custody hearing between her parents to his hideout in the woods. Bill Clinton was a slut from the jump; HRC knew it and so did the rest of his enablers. On these matters, I’ll agree with Kirsten Gillibrand. HOWSOAMEVER, some woman claims to be traumatized because she sought to pose for a selfie w/Franken who put his arm around her waist???? Cut me a fuckin’ break! If Dems are gullible enough to make this their hill to die on, they deserve whatever befalls them. MS and I agree (and that’s after 26 years together) that Al should stand his ground, unless and until (R)s are ready to ditch Trump, Farenthold, Moore, Gingrich, and every other slug in their arsenal. Politics ain’t beanbag, ladies and gents. Get a fuckin’ grip!

Wonkette – against sexual harassment before being for it and only until political pressure forced them to be against it again.

Because, on the left, there are degrees of harassment.

    • (((Aron)))

      There are degrees of EVERYTHING.

Is slapping the same as murder?
Is ‘groping’ the same as rape?

    My NY Times comment:

Really? This is insane. No one else has faced more bland allegations: goofing around on a USO tour, posing for a childish photo, not being careful enough when he posed with allegedly friendly people. I’m six feet tall. I tested on my five-foot one wife. Tossed my arm over her shoulder and it landed squarely on her ass.

This is in comparison to reports of actual assaults and pedophilia. Can’t Democrats tell the difference. When it first came up, I was the first to say that Franken engaged in bad behavior. But, seriously, it’s just bad behavior. These are bad times, perhaps the worst in history, and the so-called opposition party wants to make things worse. Apparently, they agree with Trump that admitting you did something wrong is the real offense. Screw them.
