MSNBC, in an amazing display of a media organization knuckling under to rightwing fuckery, has announced it’s cutting ties with Sam Seder over a 2009 tweet that mocked defenders of Roman Polanski. Yes, you read that right — Seder was fired, in essence, for saying rape is bad, but doing it with sarcasm that could be misread by idiots. Here’s the context: At the time, quite a few Hollywood types were signing a petition calling for Switzerland to release Polanski, who’d been arrested on child rape charges dating from the ’70s. The man was a Great Artist, said the petition, and so why let a bit of child rape from long ago harsh his Artistic Vision. Seder, disgusted by the very idea, sent out this tweet, which has since been deleted:

Anyone with half a brain should be able to recognize that’s a slam against Polanski supporters, making fun of the very idea that mastery of film technique could possibly excuse doing sex with a 13-year-old girl — and one who’d been drugged up, at that. Why, it’s as insane a claim as saying an accused child molester belongs in the US Senate because he’s a reliable vote for tax cuts.

In the last week or so, rightwing ratfuckers led by #pizzagate conspiracy promoter Mike Cernovich have orchestrated an email campaign aimed at advertisers on Seder’s Majority Report podcast, disingenuously wailing about how Seder supposedly “condones” child rape. Seder shared a sample in a YouTube video responding to the fake outcry:

Strip out the context, lie a little, and suddenly a sarcastic condemnation of a child rapist can be reframed as “horrific child rape comments.” If you’re an idiot or a liar, and Mike Cernovich is both. Fired White House spokesasshole Sebastian Gorka got in on the pretended outrage act, too:

You do have to wonder what the hell MSNBC was thinking when it fired Sam Seder yesterday, at least until you google “MSNBC fires Sam Seder” and find headlines like these:

Rather than showing a bit of integrity, the gutless cowards at MSNBC gave the boot to a very effective, sharp-witted commentator to appease a horde of venal, lying Donald Trump fans — and to avoid headlines like “MSNBC Stands by Commentator After Rape Joke.”

How stupid is MSNBC’s decision? So stupid that even rightwing tweet-trawler Twitchy said it was crap, approvingly quoting a supporter of Seder in a headline:

When Wonkette agrees with Twitchy — which recently helped send the Internet Flying Monkey Brigade after us because we said a swear about Sarah Huckabee Sanders — you might almost get a bit of hope for public discourse, just maybe.

Mike Cernovich, we should add, is not exactly a guy who worries too much about rape, except when he can stir up a campaign of fake outrage aimed at a liberal. He has his own unique perspective on the topic:

Chris Hayes, who frequently had Seder as a guest, was disgusted by his network’s decision, and urged people to subscribe to Seder’s podcast. Hayes asked for a little less feeding frenzy in reaction to attempts to get people fired:

MSNBC should know better — and should have learned something from the disgusting treatment of Shirley Sherrod in 2010. You also have to wonder what the fuck is up at MSNBC when they covered for years for Matt Lauer, but cut Seder loose thanks to a rightwing ratfucking scheme. As Mother Jones writer Kevin Drum asks, “What the hell is in the water these days at 30 Rock?”

Go sign the petition to MSNBC demanding they rehire Sam Seder. The last person any media organization should be listening to is Mike Cernovich, a genuine joking-but-only-serious rape apologist.

      This might be a qualified loss, and lead to some shitty law that future SCOTUS’ will have to sort out (which is nothing new for Kennedy). But it’s not going to be a complete disaster, I’m pretty sure.

        The U.S. Supreme Court has decided against hearing a Texas case to allow same-sex spouses of government employees the same benefits that opposite-sex spouses receive — like dental, health and life insurance.

        The court’s Monday decision, which came without any comment from court justices, allows a Texas Supreme Court ruling calling for a more in-depth discussion on what rights are allowed to same-sex spouses to stand.

        The Texas case was brought by Houston anti-LGBT lobbyists in 2013 against the City of Houston and then-mayor Annise Parker for granting the same benefits to both same-sex and opposite-sex spouses of city employees. By the end of August 2016, nearly 600 same-sex spouses had enrolled in these plans.

        According to lawyers for the anti-LGBT groups, Texans who don’t believe in gay marriage shouldn’t have to be “subsidizing same-sex marriage” with their tax dollars. In June 2017, pressure from Texas GOP leaders who oppose gay marriage pushed the all-Republican Texas Supreme Court to agree with them, despite having originally rejected the case in 2016. The state court specifically ruled that the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision requiring states to legally recognize same-sex marriages to the same extent as they do opposite-sex marriage says nothing explicitly about “publicly funded benefits.” The Texas court ordered a trial to reconsider the case — and fully flesh out the rights Obergefell granted same-sex couples.

        Their goal is to equate all sexual conduct with criminal sexual conduct. Not to end sexual conduct – that will never happen – but to end any attempt to sanction any sexual conduct, whether criminal or not. Hence “all men.” Once they equate this movement against sexual harassment with a movement against sexual behavior of any kind, then we go right back to the old rules – where sex is bad but boys will be boys so whatcha gonna do?         I have no idea if Kiheun was a jackass or not; I am sure it is possible that he was; but to even talk about him while we are talking about Wienstein is to surrender to false equivalence.

        Conyers should have been sacked when it happened. But if we’re going to be sacking congressmen for sexual misconduct, shouldn’t there be a line and the worst go first? Instead, while Pelosi is calling Conyers to resign, the Republicans will be seating Moore. Democrats will pride themselves on moral purity and Republicans will laugh and continue dismantling the social safety net.

        Nonetheless, I’m fine with bouncing Conyers. He had an investigation. He settled for real money. He actually did something wrong! But these other cases range from lies to misunderstandings, from clumsy to boorish. Is that really worth unilaterally disarming? This is the same impulse that cast out Hillary Clinton for giving 3% of her speeches to banks.

        Let not the perfect be the enemy of the good. How many times does it need to be said?

            Seder has been rehired. Of course, his case is different from Franken’s because Seder has bosses. Franken is in a job where appearances can be more important than facts. He was under pressure, but he chose to resign.

            And I’m not sure the Dems are heading for defeat on this issue. In the Virginia elections women went heavily Dem. That is a trend we want to continue. A lot of poorer people don’t vote, but sexual harassment is an issue that poor women are extremely aware of. They often work in jobs where they have no power and can be preyed on.

            I would like to see the Dems put a plank in their platform in 2020 about no tolerance for sexual harassment and abuse.

            Note: condemning sexual harrasment is not about etiquette–it’s about crime.

            I’m short and skinny, I look defenseless, and I have been harassed. It was singularly unpleasant. Horrible, even. It hasn’t happened in years, but I still cringe to recall it.
            The grabber was lucky I was not a martial-arts adept, say. And I was lucky that I didn’t do something I’d later regret.

            I go that quip one better, and say that the Democrats bring an etiquette book to a gunfight. I was not thinking about sexual misdeeds. My comment was a generalized one bemoaning Democrats’ distaste for the down-and-dirty of politics, our penchant for non-tactical and self defeating highroadism. “We’d rather be right than elected!”

            Sorry I misunderstood. I completely agree that Dems need to start believing in things and fighting for them. They used to stand for protecting SS and Medicare; they’ve gone soft on those. Per Ryan, the Dems will get a chance to redefine themselves next year when the Repubs go after entitlement programs ’cause the deficit is too big and we can’t possibly cut taxes or military.

            Choosing no tolerance on sexual abuse is also not a bad platform plank.

            My Dem hero, style-wise, is Lyndon Johnson. He was horribly wrong about the Viet Nam, but he was a tough fighter and an extraordinarily effective politician. Dems used to know how to fight like junkyard dogs; they need to recover that skill. I would think the Trump administration would give them all the ammunition they need.
