THIS WOMAN IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SHITTY CONGRESS

I don’t like your faves. Let’s get that out of the way up front. I have met them, you see, and they are people just like us and most of them are assholes when the cameras are off, same as you would be! My politics, especially since mid-2016, can be summed up thusly: GET OVER YOURSELVES AND STOP THE FUCKING FASCISTS. I don’t care who should have won or who stole what from whom or whose praxis is more pure or whose candidate is more perfect.

If I hear another word about either Hillary or Bernie I might lose my shit entirely and just start voting for Vermin Supreme for every office because at least that fucker’s gonna give me a pony. Equally important to me in a candidate: I have never heard Vermin Supreme say that he loses because people have simply failed to comprehend his glory. He knows he loses because his name is Vermin Supreme and because he doesn’t campaign. I appreciate that kind of honesty.

That sounds like a joke but TBH as a non-Dem I’m so disgusted with the lot of you after the way you’ve all been behaving this past year that if voting for Vermin wouldn’t have risked the apocalypse I’d have done it just to register my disapproval on the theory that not voting looks like apathy, but drawing a dick on the ballot sends a message.

All of that is to give you the proper reference to the following statement: If you are asserting that this tax whatsit is the fault of the Dems then you have lost the plot and should have yourself checked out to see whether someone has damaged that part of your brain that is in charge of critical thinking. You have sunk so far into Deranged Twitter Personality that you should consider whether someone should check your food to be sure you’re not ingesting drain cleaner because I am worried that you are incapable of understanding that drain cleaner and apple juice are not the same thing.

That, or you’re actually just a shitty human being because at a moment this fucking critical, before the bill has been reconciled and signed – A MOMENT WE COULD STILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS – you have chosen to play How Is This The Fault Of The People Who Annoy Me Most and that, friend, is the moral equivalent of telling starving kids and dying patients “hold up a second, I’m going to help you but first I have to be sure that my enemies are aware that I still have this moral high ground. Do me a favor and try not to die while I’m gone, I will totally help once the IMPORTANT shit is done!”

The Dems are a moderately less bad option for people who only want a few lobbyists in any given bill. They vote less frequently in favor of ruin and disaster. They can be counted upon at least to say all the right things while they vote to fuck you up. None of this is good. Also? That’s political fucking reality with two parties, first-past-the-post voting and Citizens goddamned United.

There is time to talk philosophy and politics and what world we’d build if these fuckers would move and let us actually advocate for single payer, for instance. That time is in a goddamned bar when you’re like three drinks in and Nancy Pelosi comes on the TV to do whatever it is Nancy Pelosi does.

Today we are facing an existential threat from actual malicious evil. This is not a quarrel over guiding principles nor an internal battle over what voting system we should use in the primary. This is the GOP openly defying all custom and reasonable order. This is Paul Ryan enacting every twisted fever-dream he’s ever had, McConnell finally repaying all those favors to K street, these people are stealing our entire nation and consigning millions to penury and ruin and want and you are fucking telling me you blame the DEMOCRATS for this somehow and what’s more you’re going to actually spend your energy bitching about this? Are you stupid or did you take some acid and listen to The Fountainhead on audio last night?

Thing is that if you’re actually vulnerable – that is, if this bill’s impact on you will be more than fucking with your writeoffs or making things slightly more expensive – you won’t be one of the fucking idiots bitching about philosophy.

I’m writing this from New York City, sitting across a tequila-strewn table from a woman whose parents immigrated from Guyana and who organizes on behalf of people who can’t afford food every day. Neither she nor I were in the pantsuit nation. We both think the DSA is screwing up by not going hard enough for what they believe. We both think you’re fucking nuts trying to pin decades of GOP dreams coming true on the Dems.

Stop it. Be better. Think harder. Aim more carefully. But mostly? SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GO FIGHT THE FASCISTS.

And now, your open thread!

We are not the GOP here and we don’t have all the monies so please tip us!

  • Hello Media,

The GOP has the White House and BOTH the Senate and the House, the Supreme Court and the majority of federal Judges.

The Democrats are united in fighting every one of their crazy ideas but don’t use the illegal/immoral tactics the GOP uses when they are in the minority. i know, I kmow…the damn Democrats actually like Government.

Stop this. You are NOT helping.

    Signed,

    Sane Folks

Purity ponies will lose their tax deductions for hay and horseshit.

  • Eileen Besse

    I SERIOUSLY HATE THEM.

  • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

The Republicans have 52 votes in the Senate. They set this bill up so it would require only 50 votes to pass.

Short of locking McCain, Collins, and Flake in a closet there wasn’t a whole lot the Dems could do here.

    • Lascauxcaveman

I don’t get why McCain, Collins and Flake are accepting this particular piece of shit, when it’s as bad or worse than than the last piece of shit. None of those three even needs the support of the billionaire class. It makes no sense to me.

Collins “the Moderate” especially is supposed to know what’s being thrown out here for no good reason, except growing the deficit.

to be honest, i thought it was a bit of rambling up there.

Can we still blame Society, tho?

    Also, the bossa nova.

It’s a fair cop, but society’s to blame.

      It’s more of a cha-cha thing, actually.

sadly, can’t watch “kind hearts and coronets” right now (on TCM), but if i weren’t an atheist, i would believe that the voice of joan greenwood was a gift from god.

    • Daniel

      Yes.

      That is all.

    • Carpe Vagenda

      Absolutely.

    • theCryptofishist

I’ve loved it since I was a kid.

  • ryp

I was going to blame the Democrats for not using their Green Lantern rings and putting all the Republicans in emerald cages until they agreed not to vote for the bill. But then I remembered that Green Lantern’s weakness is yellow, and more cowardly lot than the Republican congress you won’t find.

  • Iron Monkey

I don’t get it. Who is saying that the tax bill is the fault of the Dems? It would have been nice if they were better organized and did a better job in the last election but is has been a GOP shit show all the way through–not only no Dem votes but not even the slightest input.

    • ryp

Because some feel that that the Dems capitulated by not going all John Wick on Republican ass. Which is fair I guess, if Chuck Schumer had run through the senate cloakroom shooting Republicans in the head, they probably wouldn’t have gotten to 50.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

TBF he probably could have gotten enough to prevent a quorum, given our shitty gun laws

    • Blackest Noobs

      Donald Trump kinda did

      • Zippy W Pinhead

yeah, but fucking cares what that blithering idjit says, unless it’s Mueller because Donnie is incriminating himself on Twitter?

  • Ali | A Grumpy Cat

You know, your article where you basically told us who had suffered from depression and suicidal ideation, and I quote, “fuck you” left a bad taste in my mouth. This one where you sit on your holier-than-thou perch and say you might have voted for Trump to “send a message”? I’m definitely not reading anything with your byline again.

Look, I was actively attacked online and even ON THIS SITE for being pro-Hillary, and I STILL have Bernie Bros up in my shit. Shitheads exist and they’re fucking LOUD on Twitter. But they’re not all of us, and guess what? You’re doing the same damn purity tests that the Bernie Bros and Jill Stein did. Congrats on being better than so many of us, I guess. Enjoy your pony.

Yeah, I’m out. One less person tying up Rebecca’s bandwidth, I guess.

    • Changeling

After that one I thought, and there’s no fuck you here, that maybe martinis should take a mental health break. Even if you feel all right the day after a suicide attempt, I wouldn’t count on it. I feel guilty that she’s still working and we’re reading like nothing’s happened. Can Wonket afford paid leave? I’d contribute to that.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

Wonket’s latest pitch included trying to give the chatcave health insurance, IIRC

    • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

Please don’t leave. You’re smart and articulate and this is an excellent non-comment.

      • Ali | A Grumpy Cat

I’ve calmed some now, and I really don’t want to give up a support group of great people because of one author. I’ll be more careful about checking bylines before I click on stories, but you all are like an extended family, and more than anything else right now, that’s Important.

    • Ill-Advised

Co-signing with Roni, below. Please don’t leave. I can’t say I appreciated this any, either. I can choose not to read posts by this byline, for the same reasons you don’t. But Wonkette is bigger than one FP (for all values of FP).

      • Ali | A Grumpy Cat

You’re right, and I don’t want to give up the great people here because of one author. This place is Important to me, especially now.

  • What the hell are you talking about, killer? This is gobbledygook. I’m guessing that there are “clever” references and innuendo here, but I don’t get it. Are you talking about the tax bill? Healthcare? The primaries? Ponies? You’ve lost me….

Women, Latinx, immigrants don’t seem to matter.

      • janecita

Please, don’t call us Latinx. That made up by fucking Gringos term, is beyond ridiculous.

        • Latverian Diplomat

Is that an attempt to avoid the Spanish mixed gender plural because it’s also the masculine plural?

There’s nothing like trying to be inclusive by telling some other people their language is broken and wrong…

          • janecita

Right? What is next “niñex,” because niños is offensive? They would have to change the whole language to make it pc to their easily offended ears.

        • Msgr_MΩment

          Latin@?

      • WilbyToad

I’m an old white male that voted for Bernie in the Primary and Hillary in the General. I would vote for Kamala as someone who has moved from California corporate dem to embrace the left. She has to address the Mnuchin fiasco first. If she admitted her error, I’d support her all the way.

        Nobody here that I’ve seen.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

I’m still trying to decide what I just read- parts were good, ‘like STFU and remember who the real enemy is’ and ‘don’t blame the Dems for something they couldn’t stop’. Parts of it got awful rambley and I’m not sure about the whole voting for vermin supreme thing. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt as far as “The Dems are a moderately less bad option” part being snark. Or maybe I’ll go finish hanging War on Christmas lights and not worry about it.

      • alwayspunkindrublic

War on Christmas and a beer sounds good. I’m not really in the mood for this shit right now.

      • Juan de Fuca

Thanks for reminding me of what I was supposed to be doing today. Was supposed to buy new lights today. I guess I’ll have to fight the War on Christmas tomorrow.

      • WomanInThePersistence

She’s either really drunk, or a complete asshole.

        • alwayspunkindrublic

          Why not both?

          • Johnatx

            My choice.

          • WomanInThePersistence

I’m disappointed in her. It’s one thing to rant drunkenly in the non-comments. Another thing entirely to be a total asshole as an actual writer for Wonkette.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

Yes. Who among us doesn’t occasionally rant drunkenly in the non-comments? But a. We don’t get paid for it, and b. We get called out if we’re being assholes.

          • WomanInThePersistence

I’m seriously considering e-mailing Trix about this. Because what the actual fuck?

          • alwayspunkindrublic

I’m REALLY hoping nobody in the Chat Cave put an editorial OK stamp on this.

          • janecita

            Why bother?

          • Ill-Advised

            This!

          • Juan de Fuca

Hold up! Not all of my rants are drunk ones.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

Well goddamnit, it’s never to late to start!

          • Zippy W Pinhead

There is nothing more helpless and irresponsible than a man in the depths of an ether binge

        • starfanglednut

          Or seriously unstable.

          • willi0000000

yeah . . . there’s definitely something else shining through there.

          • C4TWOMAN

I’mma guessing frustration and rage, plus a need to edit. It reminds me of a first draft heavy on reactions and feelings that hasn’t gone through the rereading/editing process.

        • The Militant Homosexual Agenda

          Um, both.

      • I assume War on Christmas lights look the same as Christmas lights but blink subversive messages in code.

    • janecita

She must be drinking cheap tequila, Jose Cuervo can turn you into a weirdo in 2 minutes flat.

      • alwayspunkindrublic

Or you start off that way and the tequila just makes it worse.

        • janecita

          That is a strong possibility.

  • As someone who had to vote 3 times in 18 months to establish a Prime Minister, two of those times in raging snow or ice storms, seriously, get off your asses and do something

    • Indeniable Ron

Wasn’t that FUN? And we STILL ended up with Harper.

      • I fully blame election fatigue for that bullshit

        • Indeniable Ron

Yup. If they’d let well enough alone they’d probably never’ve been voted out, no matter how much cronyism was going on.

        • The Militant Homosexual Agenda

And in the US, our primaries are sooooo fucking long that by the day of the general election most just don’t give a damn anymore.

      • Msgr_MΩment

        Harper? Thought you said Herpes.

        • ltmcdies

          not a lot difference really

True. You can never completely get rid of herpes either.

  • GreenGoldSharpie

Personally, I’m looking forward to next year when Pubbies will be distracting their drooling supporters with trans perverts, nig-black people protesting, sand nig-Moooolums terrorizing, and Wetb-illegals illegaling.

I wish there were a way to block a “byline”. I only click on KM’s articles by mistake. It’s not her rambling rage. She can write whatever she wants. The real problem is how many times I’ve seen her curate the Disqus comments and attack loyal readers for no good reason. I’ve experienced it myself. She can be out of line and way unprofessional.

They were originally imported from the direction of Brandenburg. According to my Czech teacher.

I suspect not here but I too, have been seeing this pushing online in some parts of the tweeter world.

some of it bots and trolls, some of it I suspect a small but loud group who will not accept that once all the shouting and electioneering and such is done and it’s you in the voter booth by yourself.

stupid fuck said his stupid fuck comment on a email chain that included his boss. so we’ll see if they do anything ( at the very least two higher ups also were included in the email)

i would really love to do the tough guy thing…take off my shirt, show my bullet holes and then tell IT guy that’s nothing compared to what i’m going to do to you. those are my true feelings but unlike asshole techy guy, I AM A FUCKING PROFESSIONAL…i unlike you do not act like a teenaged MEAN girl or get super thin-skinned when given constructive criticism.

    1) No, I don’t blame the DEMOCRATS.
    2) No, I am not going to spend any energy bitching about it (I am spending enough energy trying to figure out WTF this rant was about)
    3) I am stupid–not always but often enough.

  • GreenGoldSharpie

BTW, I’m a cynical bitch for a bit.

I got dumped yesterday during my lunch hour (2 classes left to teach) via text after being told “I just don’t get excited to see you the way you normally do in a relationship.”

As a parting gift I got the really mild cold he used to refuse to see me all week except to give me some of my stuff I actually needed the other night.

    • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

Dude’s a coward for not even having the stones to face you. That sucks.

    • theCryptofishist

I’m sorry to hear this. Of course, he’s an ass for leaving you hanging and texting you. You’re better off without him. But there’s always pride and vulnerability, and those are so easy to wound.

      • GreenGoldSharpie

I think that’s a big part of it. He made assumptions about how I felt too, and it was shit. I hate that. The nigh on universal truth about us trans folks is we know ourselves better than most. It’s built into figuring yourself out.

    • Lyly Sirivong

That is seriously one of the worst break up texts I’ve ever seen.
      Really sorry.

      • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

The term “break-up texts” should not even exist.

    • BosGrl

A person that would dump you over text AND in the middle of your work day is not worthy of you.

      • GreenGoldSharpie

        Yeah, no kidding.

On the plus side my students finally got me to tell them what was up, and one of the girls I butt heads with said, “Give me his address and I’ll rip his dick off.”

That blunted the pain a bit to hear her say that. ;-)

        • Indeniable Ron

They’re on your side. A rare and precious thing.

      • starfanglednut

I had a girl break up with me, take me back, then break up with me again over the course of one weekend, by text, while I was at work.

        • BosGrl

          That’s… wow.

          • starfanglednut

            Ikr?

    • WomanInThePersistence

Oh honey, I’m sorry that somebody treated you so badly. You deserve good things.

I’ll find the right person. :-)

In a sense, it was the first time since I went full time. At least I know I can do this dating thing still.

        • Changeling

That’s actually a really important thing to know. Once I realized someone still wanted me there were suddenly a lot more of them. Although I still don’t know about the dating thing. I haven’t really gotten that far yet.

    • Lance Thrustwell

Christ, how hard is it to say something true but non-cruel to break up with someone? “It’s just not working for me. I don’t know why; you’re a great person. But that’s just how it is.”

      How hard is that?

      • GreenGoldSharpie

        Difficult, apparently.

        • Lance Thrustwell

          hugs!

    • WannabeTraveler

      • GreenGoldSharpie

        Alas, I took no pictures.

But, apparently, I’m talented in the BJ department. Hehe.

I feel your pain…….My husband came home on a Saturday afternoon and told me he didn’t love me anymore and was moving out. We had just purchased a new home (moved in 3 weeks) and I had been fired from my job on the Monday. He left that night while on the way home to his mommy and cleaned out our bank out. Worst experience in my life,,,,,, I got the house he got the fish tank. lol Don’t get me wrong it was a really nice tank, over $6000. lol

If I look back at the last time the Democrats where truly in charge (first two obama years) I see the passage of bills that ended DADT, a bill that brought the Consumer Protection Bureau into being, (and dodd Frank), and of course a little bill that made health care insurance affordable for millions.

In just two years the situation was made better for the entire USA.

This: ‘one side is bad, and the other side is less bad but still bad’ way of thinking is what leads people to become disengaged from politics.

They are not all bad. Citizens United was (and is) opposed by the Democrats. In the USA one party is bad and will make the country worse. And one party is good and will make the country (marginally) better. It’s not a perfect party, but it’s not ‘a lesser evil’.

    • Daniel

It is in an incredibly literal understanding of the phrase- one party is alcohol free beer, the other is hydrochloric acid mixed with piss and hagfish sputum. One is a less good drink than the other.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

the only way to drink hagfish sputum is neat, no mixer, no ice

      • “Waiter, this glass is full of lukewarm brine.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, sir. I have a glass of ice-cold tap water if you’d like it.”

“Eh, tap water isn’t as good as tea, so I’ll keep the brine and wait for your menu to change.”

      • Lance Thrustwell

I just don’t know who she’s talking about, is the thing. It ain’t us. I don’t see anyone around here blaming the Democrats for the GOP’s evil-as-shit tax plan.

        • Blackest Noobs

the whole article is a rambling mess…i.e. where’s a good editor when you need one

          • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

        • The Librarian

Perhaps the Bernie Bros or other purity ponies who would love to point the finger at the Dems who wanted a better world, but knew that the Jill Steins of the world were full of shit.

  • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

If you weren’t in the pantsuit nation then you were part of the problem.

    What the actual fuck.

Did you vote for Jill Stein, perhaps?

  • spangled

i have seen a couple of people blaming this on democrats, and that’s insane. though oddly phrased, I think she’s railing against those people.

because that narrative hasn’t really cemented outside of a few twitter dummies, people are confused that she is arguing against something they haven’t seen. and maybe she went a little overboard on the whole, “I’m not a democrat fangirl” qualifier https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/297a0a58d08bd7ff259523dd1940f52390efa428cf876a249b23b3e518ab9b8c.png

    • WomanInThePersistence

      You think?

    • Resistance Fighter Callyson

Reza Aslan? Shit, that’s disappointing. I thought this post was inspired by something ridiculous that Jill Stein tweeted FFS.

    • Juan de Fuca

Said it before, will probably say it again – fuck Reza Aslan.

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

I… what in the fuck would that accomplish, Mr. Aslan?

Other than leaving the floor totally open for the Republicans to declare a quorum and pass whatever crazy shit they want, I mean.

      • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

I mean, at least by doing something they put on the record what the Republicans do and do not care about. Sometimes all you can do is get fodder for the next election cycle.

        • spangled

right, and there were some genuinely powerful speeches on the floor (I’m thinking Bennet, Brown in particular) that brought to light some of the worst parts of the bill

      • Lance Thrustwell

Aslan is kinda famous for claiming expertise he doesn’t actually possess.

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

For an instructive example of why “walking out” never works, just ask the Soviets after they walked out of the UN to show their contempt for the U.S. resolution to send an army to Korea. Without exercising their veto first.

The U.S. delegation then promptly declared that the Soviets had no objection and the resolution passed. D’oh.

      • ariel_gee_398

Maybe he should have googled senate quorum rules before tweeting.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

seems to me we stopped one or two especially ugly amendments and that the Dems not being there would have opened the floodgates to hundreds more

hot take is bad take. try again Reza

    • starfanglednut

Fuck you, Reza. Your book sucked, too.

    • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

The problem is she’s railing against those people as if we are those people. Which by and large we are not.

    • janecita

      Oh Reza, how disappointing:-(

  • Resistance Fighter Callyson

You know, the Democrats might have an easier time of it if they weren’t constantly berated because they don’t always achieve optimal policy results. Just sayin…

    • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

I’d like to not get a bayonet in the ribs from our own side after being kicked in the teeth by the opposition too. Seems like a not unreasonable ask.

    • Covfefe’s Evil Twin

Agreed. But I think both (all three, four, five) parties would be better if we got money the fuck out of politics. And at least the Dems try to do that.

I watched the returns that terrible night “The Orange One” became president. I didn’t cry, rant or condemn. It happened. Now I shall move on, move forward and fight for the change I (we) deserve. In this context, a good article from The Conversation, as to why GOP doesn’t care if we like their tax plan or not
    https://theconversation.com/the-gop-doesnt-care-if-you-like-their-tax-plan-heres-why-88467

“More importantly, as University of Glasgow political scientist Christopher Jan Carman and I have found, Republicans in Congress simply don’t care as much about public opinion as Democrats do. The ideological convergence between voters and legislators is more than three times greater among Democratic legislators than among Republicans.

And there is good reason for this: Republican voters don’t really care either. Across several years of data, we found that Republican voters are between 20 and 30 points less likely than their Democratic counterparts to agree that elected representatives should “try their hardest to give the people what they want.”

“Why? Many Republicans – voters and lawmakers alike – simply cherish their principles more than they do the preferences of a largely capricious and inattentive public. And nothing is more central to Republican orthodoxy than tax cuts for the wealthy.”

Oh, remember Bush’s unnecessary war in Iraq (and to a lesser extent in Afghanistan)? That is the “alternative” way Republicans use to distribute wealth to the top.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

it’s because the GOP base are authoritarian sheep so the GOP pols don’t have to worry nearly as much about what they think- because they don’t

  • Angela Ruzzo

What a day…First the tax bill. Then 5 military helicopters buzzing my house. Then I smelled a faint gas leak in the garage, called Ameren, they said “Evacuate and take your pets with you.” Well H-O-L-Y C-O-O-O-W-W they don’t know my cats. Senior cat wouldn’t come down from the top of the linen cupboard, and I am now bleeding on both arms. Junior cat was fine until I got her into the car, whereupon she commenced howling like the Demented Mutant Hound of the Baskervilles On Drugs Times Ten. Ameren guy couldn’t find a gas leak anywhere, said all was OK. There is no explanation. I will leave the garage door partially open overnight – there’s nothing in there to steal. I would like to blame Republigans for this, but I can’t quite see how to do that.

    • Failure to maintain national infrastructure?

    • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

You should actually be blaming Democrats. Or something.

    • Fartknocker

I’ve responded to many gas leaks. The pressure regulator may have operated, which discharged a small amount of gas into the atmosphere. Did the utility company install pressure gauges on the meter as part of their investigation?

      • Angela Ruzzo

Nope. But he did turn off the shut-off valve for the furnace, the water heater, the stove and the gas fireplace, and then he watched the outside meter for 10 minutes and it didn’t move a nanometer (or whatever they call it). He did not go down into the crawlspace, where all the pipes are, and he wasn’t even going to go into the garage until I reminded him to twice. But he did have two little gadgets that beeped every now and then which he used to very carefully inspect both inside and outside, all around the house, and he checked the meter, and the main line.

    • theCryptofishist

Well, sounds like you lost your car in every garage. I hope you still have your chicken in every pot.

    • The Militant Homosexual Agenda

Do you have a drain in your garage? If so, try pouring a quart or so of water down it. There’s an elbow trap down there somewhere and as the water evaporates it allows sewer gas to come up. Also, a dead mouse will give off a sulfur smell for a few days. Good times, good times!

      • Angela Ruzzo

Ah, yes, the joys of home ownership. But alas, I have no drain in the garage, although I wish I did. I don’t find a dead mouse, but that does not mean there isn’t one there, as I did not look that hard. Thanks for the tip, I will look again.

  • Everrett Fanuelli
  • Bemused

IDK, bickering about Bernie is somehow more important than the women (and some men) who held the largest protest that this country has ever seen? It’s more important than organized and ongoing resistance that is almost entirely grass roots and mostly uncovered by media? It’s more important than an ongoing telephone/email campaign conducted almost entirely by word of mouth/ social media because it’s also mostly uncovered by media? It’s more important than Nancy Pelosi holding on to her people basically through sheer will so that the don’t get escared by the Republicans into voting wrong? It’s more important that the Dems already running get out the vote organizations in areas where there are voter-obstructing ID laws?

Maybe it isn’t the rest of us whose viewpoint is unclear. Because we (as a whole) are fighting in every way possible.

Here is Richard North Patterson in 2015, about GOP Tax Warfare:
    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/richard-north-patterson/the-gops-tax-warfare_b_8558458.html

“For, far from being victims, they are the beneficiaries of an enormous tax windfall — over the last 50 years, our top income tax rate has fallen by 48 percent. As their assets swell, those of the poor and middle class decline, a trend accelerated by the Great Recession. Labor unions — a primary target of class warfare from the right — have weakened. Debt increases; bankruptcies have quintupled. In macroeconomic terms, shifts in income to the wealthy slow consumption and retard growth — even as more political power flows to those who have the most and, all too often, care the least about those below them.”

“So what does the GOP offer us? More tax cuts for the rich.
This would make sense only if they served some larger social benefit. But they don’t. So the GOP dresses them up as the Tax Fairy, cloaked in a hoary myth which history has long since proven false: that tax cuts magically pay for themselves or, at least, offset much of their cost by stimulating economic growth.
With apologies to my readers, the truth resides in numbers.”

“The first great tax cutter, Ronald Reagan, slashed the upper income tax rate by 42 percent; the deficit exploded by $1.4 trillion. Fans of economic reality noticed. When the second President Bush proposed cutting the top rate by 4.5 percent, 450 economists — including 10 Nobel Prize winners — sent a letter protesting that “these tax cuts will weaken the long-term budget outlook… will reduce the capacity of the government to finance Social Security and Medicare benefits as well as investments in schools, health, infrastructure and basic research… [and] generate further inequities in after-tax income.”
All true. In the event, these cuts increased the deficit by another $5 trillion.”

“By contrast, Bill Clinton raised the upper income tax rate 11.6 percent, achieving a budget surplus of $236 billion by the end of his term. Barack Obama’s more modest achievement is to hike the top rate by 8.5 percent, while the percentage of the deficit to gross domestic product (GDP) fell from 10 percent to 3 percent. Add to this the small matter of creating jobs: under Clinton, the economy added over 20 million new jobs — the highest total for the last five presidents.”

This post is not necessarily about us. About you and me here in these comments. It’s not. Like any other general statement, If it applies you it applies to you, if it doesn’t apply, it doesn’t.

It;s not about us all the time. It’s not about me all the time. Full disclosure. My last comment here was about how much I hate the purity ponies. I was actually contributing to the problem because I lost focus. and the ponies piss me off too much to let it go. I should be better than that. I am not, but I’ll keep trying.

The point is to look forward now, be pragmatic now, as a whole, as a group, to fight a worse problem. We can resume the normal circular firing squad of the left later. We can get back to what should have been or could have been after we take care of what is.

Unless I am missing something that’s my take away here.

    • shivaskeeper

      Reply to myself.

The GOP got their tax cuts on Election Day. It’s the one thing their whole fucked up party could agree on, and now, per usual, we have to elect a bunch of Democrats to save the ship.

The thing is, it’s about the only thing they do have, and House and Senate versions still have to be reconciled, and there’s stuff in the Senate bill that the House won’t go for and stuff in the House bill that the Senate won’t go for. It might get pretty entertaining, if foregone.

Past tax cuts? They got nothing. It’s their default answer to everything. Now they’re a thousand squabbling voices and a President who’s going down. They broke it, they bought it.

Dems were never going to win this one. Keeping the government open, avoiding a debt limit crash, and preventing a war or wars—those are the next battlefields. That and next November.

    • DoILookAmused2u? Résistance☨

Saving the ship inevitably leads to losing Congress.

And in some more depressing news, a 2016 article from the NYTimes.
A Dilemma for Humanity: Stark Inequality or Total War
    https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/06/business/economy/a-dilemma-for-humanity-stark-inequality-or-total-war.html

“Mr. Obama has led the most progressive administration since Lyndon B. Johnson’s half a century ago, raising taxes on the rich to expand the safety net for the less fortunate. Still, by the White House’s own account, eight years of trench warfare in Washington trimmed the top 1-percenters’ share, after taxes and transfers, to only 15.4 percent, from 16.6 percent of the nation’s income. It increased the slice going to the poorest fifth of families by 0.6 percentage point, to a grand total of 4 percent.

The policies also helped push the Republican Party even further to the right, leading to the Tea Party — whose rabid opposition to government redistribution still shakes American politics. They did nothing to salve — and perhaps even added to — the stewing resentment of white working-class Americans who feel left out of the nation’s advancements, producing the electoral victory for Donald J. Trump, who has proposed a tax plan that amounts to a lavish giveaway to the rich.”

“The point is not that President Obama should have done better. He probably did the best he could under the circumstances. The point is that delivering deep and lasting reductions in inequality may be impossible absent catastrophic events beyond anything any of us would wish for.”

“Professor Scheidel does not offer a grand unified theory of inequality. But scouring through the historical record, he detects a pattern: From the Stone Age to the present, ever since humankind produced a surplus to hoard, economic development has almost always led to greater inequality. There is one big thing with the power to stop this dynamic, but it’s not pretty: violence.

The big equalizing moments in history may not have always have the same cause, he writes, “but they shared one common root: massive and violent disruptions of the established order.”

    • Indeniable Ron

All due respect, Prof, but this ain’t news. What DOES surprise me is that people haven’t ALREADY taken to the streets in arms.

That makes more sense. I was really confused.

        • Resistor Radio

Well that was my take on it, seems to be an unpopular opinion though. :)

          • Zippy W Pinhead

I think we all seem to be split between that take, the opposite take where peeps are genuinely offended and the rest of us who are scratching our heads and hoping your take is right so we don’t have to be offended also too

          • Resistor Radio

I didn’t take it as she was yelling at the wonketariat; to me it read like she’s lately experienced a lot of bullshit hot takes from the purity people and wrote out a reaction to that. Her anger at the “you” informed me that idiot purity-types actually are angry at Dems about this, and the anti-pantsuit snark told me that she’s pissed at her crowd (the liberal not-Dems) who seem to be embracing the default “blame the dems” position. That was my read, she’s furious at the purity types and their misplaced blame, and went out of her way to illustrate that she’s generally with them, and wasn’t just Nancy Pelosi scolding people for not voting Hillary. I structure my ranting in much the same way, and reading the comments I’m starting to understand why I feel so misunderstood so often. (All said lightheartedly and with much respect. I will go to the mat to yell at liberals who didn’t vote Hillary, I fucking love me some HRC, and I disagree with a lot of her critique of the Dems, but that wasn’t the point of her article, I don’t think)

          • Zippy W Pinhead

I’m leaning that way too- though she could have done a better job of being clear about that

          • WomanInThePersistence

The fact that you had to go through so much thought is an indicator, to me at least, that this shouldn’t have been published here.

          • Resistor Radio

Okay, you have a point, but I didn’t put that much thought into it until I was trying to explain my thoughts. (Uhhh, lol)

I got really irritated when people kept saying that we didn’t understand the brilliance of the NYT nazi piece because we were dumb and lacked reading comprehension skills, so I’m not gonna tell anyone how to think about this. Really. Just, I read it differently than most, my initial thoughts were “lay off the Dems! Oh, wait, she’s pissed at the purity crowd, and she’s talking to them.”

          • shivaskeeper

            Exactly my take on it.

          • Ill-Advised

How hard is it to know your audience? If you’re posting for Wonkette, you DO get that your readers are, by and large, not part of the problem?

I’m so pissed I’m upvoting every non-comment I agree with. From oldest to newest.

      • WomanInThePersistence

Then why is she posting it here?

        • Hee. Great minds and alla that.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

TBF, the purity pony blogs prolly wouldn’t run it

          • And they’ll never come here to read it, as Wonkette has been found by them to be severely lacking in purity. Which makes this whole exercise pointlessly inflammatory.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

Maybe- though we’ve seen articles here end up in some strange places, as evidenced by the periodic infestations of Bernie Bros™ or Breitfart howler monkeys. I’d say at the least, she could have been a whole lot more clear on who her intended audience was, assuming it wasn’t actually the regulars here. The more I go back and reread it, the more she seems to be saying ‘get the fuck over it and pull together to fight the fascists’ which is something I agree with and support. But the fact that I had to reread it a few times to get that (and I’m still not sure), despite that fact that I haven’t been drinking tequila- or anything- is more than a little concerning. I keep feeling like I walked into the middle of someone else’s conversation…

          • That is something that has been repeatedly problematic with this particular author’s pieces. What I find disturbing is that it would appear that precisely zero percent of the feedback from long-standing, faithful readers has been taken into account, and no changes in approach have been made. That this continues to be a problem is the kind of thing that will eventually cause me to gather up my toys and go to play elsewhere, which I would honestly prefer not to do. But, I’m not going to hang around a place where I feel like I’m constantly getting clobbered over the head for stuff I haven’t done.

          • lextims

If it propagates out into the social media ecosystem enough, it’ll catch people who wouldn’t come here, though?

          • In that case, it could have been much more clearly written, and not a general screed against everyone reading it.

        • Juan de Fuca

The first rule I learned in writing and public speaking was, wait for it…

          Know your audience.

I still suck at both but at least I remembered that much.

        • shivaskeeper

Wonkette media empire. Official FB and Twitter feeds plus all the staff’s personal feeds. Viral sharing and all that.

      • Then, perhaps, she should go somewhere and address these people directly instead of haranguing us?

        • WomanInThePersistence

This. I’m fucking over having the purity ponies attack me and others who did our fucking best to keep this country decent.

      • greyXstar

    • Ω cynmac’s reclaiming her time

Nope. Not even true. Some of us that jumped on the Bernie/DSA train wanted the Pantsuit nation to be to be even more progressive and daring. And many of us did vote for Hillary after all.

      • greyXstar

How on this Earth is it not true? Do Democrats bury their heads in the sand over climate science? Do Democrats think women shouldn’t have control over their bodies? Do Democrats think the LGBT community should be legally made second-class citizens? Do Democrats think you should only have access to even basic healthcare if you were born wealthy? Do Democrats want to throw control of the internet over to a handful of ISPs? Did any Democrats vote in favor of the Reverse Robin Hood tax scam last night? Did Democrats elect a two-bit con artist who had bragged about sexual assault? Are any Democrats supporting a fucking pedophile’s senatorial campaign?

        • Ω cynmac’s reclaiming her time

Yes, the Dems did all that and support all that but some of us in Red States don’t see them doing a whole lot. When you only hear from the party when there is a big race, you start wondering where they are the rest of the time. Which is why I keep posting about Howard Dean and the 50 State plan, because the Dems need to go back and revisit that. Obviously, retreating to the Blue states has not been a winning strategy.
Also too, I hate the 2 party system. We need more choice and options.

The Voyager 1 (now interstellar) spacecraft needed slight shift in orientation so it’s antenna would say pointed at Earth. Thing is, after all this time, it’s primary thrusters had degraded but it has another thruster system but those hadn’t been turned for 37 years.

    They worked!

It is expected that in the year 40,272, Voyager 1 will come within 1.7 light years of an obscure star in the constellation Ursa Minor (the Little Bear or Little Dipper) and in about 40,000 years, Voyager 2 will come within about 1.7 light years of a star called Ross 248, a small star in the constellation of Andromeda. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c77094b1af3e4e0936f6060cb4343488b8b10f72ed486efa9b28f235dea86a6f.jpg

Wonkette is read by a LOT of people. Thousands, I understand. Most lurk; in my Usenet days it was calculated that lurkers outnumbered posters by around 10 to 1. But sometimes the lurkers get offended, and they sometimes go after the person whose byline is at the top of the piece, rather than reveal themselves to the gen. pop.

I’m a Depression historian. The GOP tax bill is straight out of 1929.
Republicans are again sprinting toward an economic cliff.

The crash followed a decade of Republican control of the federal government during which trickle-down policies, including massive tax cuts for the rich, produced the greatest concentration of income in the accounts of the richest 0.01 percent at any time between World War I and 2007 (when trickle-down economics, tax cuts for the hyper-rich, and deregulation again resulted in another economic collapse).

Yet the plain fact that the trickle-down approach has never worked leaves Republicans unfazed. The GOP has been singing from the Market-is-God hymnal for well over a century, telling us that deregulation, tax cuts for the rich, and the concentration of ever more wealth in the bloated accounts of the richest people will result in prosperity for the rest of us.

There are a lot of people here that do things to improve the lives of others, whether at their jobs (teachers, healthcare workers, etc.), or through volunteering. We don’t all simply complain. Just because we vent here doesn’t mean we aren’t trying. We use humor and clever words to keep ourselves from falling into a bottomless pit of hopelessness. We don’t always agree who is to blame for this mess, but most of the time we can agree to disagree.

I would like to do more, sure, but money is extremely tight right now and I’m already volunteering for 3 different organizations, plus I call and write my elected officials. We still have to live our lives, going to work, raising our kids or maybe our grandkids, eat, love, laugh, cry. We’re not useless.

    • Ω cynmac’s reclaiming her time

If someone fed you food laced with Draino, you would notice instantly.

The reason I know this is I had this client. Afternoon she gets out of the hospital she goes home, finds her husband there and decides to fix his favorite dinner, which he took as an effort to make up. She laced the spaghetti sauce with Draino.

They let him keep a third of his stomach so the most they could get her with was assault with intent to do great bodily harm, a ten-year. We got the right judge when we played the game so I offered attempted assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm. I know, but it cuts the exposure in half. They took it.

She told the judge at the plea hearing that she had no idea Draino would work so fast. One forkful and he was laying on the floor in agony asking her to call an ambulance.

What was going against her was the she declined to call an ambulance. He crawled over to the phone, this was before cell phones, and just as he got to the phone she went over and yanked the cord out of the wall. He got medical attention by crawling to the front door, opening the screen door and calling out to the neighbors to call an ambulance.

What was going for her was that according to the restraining order, he wasn’t even supposed to be in the house in the first place and she at that time had only limited ability to run, once he started drinking, not that having her full physical strength would have served any better than it did the night she ended up in the hospital. Also too, First offense.

Judge. Old judge. I brought her in wearing a dress, nylons, good shoes and a fresh haircut, and a woman’s most dependable accessory, a big smile.

    Four years probation.

By the way, you were right about the five cups of cheese being excessive. I doubled the amount of pasta and it was still outlandishly greasy.

          • h4rr4r

I assume mac and cheese, get some sodium citrate. If the science words sound bad, remember it’s just the result of reacting baking soda and lemon juice.

          • Shan

            What for?

          • h4rr4r

It keeps the cheese from separating. Which is the most common cause of greasiness in mac and cheese. Cheese is after all fat held in a matrix of protien.

This works for any cheese based sauce.

          • Shan

            Too late for this batch.

And, yeah, I can deal with “science words” thanks.

          • h4rr4r

Sorry, these days so many folks are so scared of “Chemicals”. Nevermind that we are literally 100% chemicals.

          • Resistor Radio

I’m having trouble with the words “cheese” and “excessive” being in the same sentence, but I’ll remember that when I try the recipe.

          • Shan

If I do it again, I’ll take the suggestion below about how to keep the cheese from turning so greasy.

Plus, also, it needed some more non-cheesey flavoring for my palate. I threw a bit of garlic powder into the pasta but it wasn’t nearly enough. More garlic (fresh), onion, pepper, possibly red pepper flakes for some kick. I dunno, it was just kinda bland to me even with all the stinky cheese involved.

          • Carpe Vagenda

Maybe next time try adding chopped spinach and sautéed chopped onions with fresh ground pepper and nutmeg. I know that probably sounds weird, but think steakhouse creamed spinach. It goes wonderfully well with cheddar and cuts some of the richness.

If you’re up for big counterintuitive weirdness, defrost frozen chopped spinach and boil it with the pasta.

          • Shan

The spinach and onion sound good, actually. I even has some I couldvhave used, and it would have been a good conduit for some fresh garlic. Bacon would be good with all that as well.

          • Carpe Vagenda

Wouldn’t bacon send you down the greasiness rabbit hole again?

          • Shan

Not if I take hr4(etc)’s advice and add the stuff that helps keep the cheese from separating.

          • Carpe Vagenda

I’m coming around to bêchamel, but in the trashy, trashy dark places in my soul this is a job for cream of mushroom soup.

          • Shan

Bechamel is easy. The thing I like is that you can control the flavor base by doing things like cooking the roux for longer or infusing the milk with, say, a chunk of onion with a bay leaf and a couple of whole cloves.

But I understand the cream-of-something soup urge. I did that with a pot roast in the slow cooker last week and I refuse to be ashamed.

I feel this year, after the last election, knowing so many allegedly SMRT people willingly avoided Clinton because reasons, it has been nonstop Once more unto the breach for us all. Those of us demanding good laws, reasonable progressive taxation, universal healthcare, et. al, are being hounded by enemies and alleged friend alike.

Sounds about right you are disgusted. The voting methods in the primaries have been an issue by and large with those who would never vote for the candidate, if it wasn’t theirs. I don’t see that as a party problem, but as a problem as an individual. We are not a bunch of Susan Sarandons here at Wonkette. I’m assuming you aren’t ranting at us.

I personally didn’t find the point all that confusing or offputting (though the writing could be tightened up a bit?), but then I’m something of a newbie and lightweight here at the Wonkatorium. I have been told, a couple times, that I’m not getting the point behind an issue. If the commenter doesn’t shove my face in the poo, I’ll probably think about things and learn.

I’m amazed that “you-talkin-bout-me” has blown up on this thread. But, at the risk of my ‘virtual’ life, I’d suggest there IS a problem that’s serious, in the Wonkatorium.

Controversial issues, becoming ever more tense in recent weeks, are sending everyone to their corners, screaming at the top if our lungs.

I’d like to recommend a NEW MAXIM: DO NOT EAT YOUR OWN. Personally, I’m tired of being so embarrassed that the world is laughing at us. But most importantly, I can’t stand the idea that we … ALL of us, in all camps … keep handing Putin win after win.

Putin – ROFLMAO. Me – sad.

I read some of killermartini’s articles and always feel confused and really stupid afterward. Is it just me?!

      • Shan

        No.

        • Tiffany de Houston

Thanks, Shan. Everyone here so smart and politically aware and savvy. I must admit I only began following politics closely when the Shrub shitshow was imminent and I feel like I have a lot to still learn. Anyway, this article is still a headscratcher for me.

            You and me both.

      • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

        No.

I’m a professional editor for decades and I read some of her articles and wonder what? I reread and go what?

        She’s not a clear writer.

Edit: For example, who the fuck is Vermin Supreme? It can’t be Trump because Vermin Supreme doesn’t campaign according to her.

So what the fuck is that even supposed to be about?

      You misspelled “punch her”.

      With votes of course.

    • Everrett Fanuelli

I don’t know who she voted for, but finding out she didn’t vote for HRC was still a vote for Trump either way.

      • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

Yes exactly which is why killer proudly proclaiming she wasn’t part of the pantsuit brigade infuriates me.

Even if she was in NY where electoral college ensured votes for Hillary.

    • Bemused

I hope she doesn’t like the benefits that they get via negotiations by the Police union, since public unions are also on the Republican chopping block.

      • disqus_lWwzrwNaw6

Not police unions. They’re getting everything they want, including the right to kill with impunity, in exchange for services rendered to the Republican Party. Teachers, nurses, postal workers, civil servants—not so much.

        • Bemused

Yet. Not police unions, yet. They’ll get their turn.

          • puredog

I liked the clams, but now that I think about it, they must certainly have been canned. Explains a lot about me.

Obama/Biden Bromance ‘Barry & Joe: The Animated Series’ in the Works With Help From Conan O’Brien
The besties will “bromance the multiverse as they try and save us from ourselves.”

“Moments after the inauguration of the forty-fifth President, Barack Obama and his best friend Joe Biden were escorted to a secret lab, run by a team of the world’s greatest scientists and occasionally Elon Musk.

“Obama and Biden were asked to take off all of their clothes and hold very still in a fetal position until they felt a painful tingling sensation.

“They would awake to find themselves inside of their younger selves. Driven to find each other, and together, change history for the better.

“Their only guide on this journey is Neil deGrasse Tyson. A brilliant scientist from the present who appears in the form of an augmented reality that only they can see and hear.

“And so they find themselves leaping throughout their own lifetime. Looking for the best in people… Striving to right injustice wherever they find it. Forever hoping that their next jump in time will take them to a future that’s not scary and fucked up.

Is her mid-thigh just magically warm and toasty year round?

    • Parakeetist

I had an old legacy game that wasn’t going to be finished so I was able to strip it out to a base game. You have one less epidemic card than the base game but you can toss in some other card with the same back if you need six of the fuckers. Otherwise it’s just peeling off all the stickers and pruning out the funded events to just the ones the base game had, and looking up the now seven (!) characters you can play as for it. Most of them are the same as the legacy versions, but the regular game has a few unique characters.

Venting at people who listen, without regarding for what they hear. “You” means you, last I heard.

        • Resistor Radio

I don’t think she was; i think she was informing us that there were grumblings from that crowd (I didn’t know they were blaming the Dems before reading her piece) and telling them to STFU, and maybe with authority since she’s not a fan of the Dems either, you know? That was my take, but I can tell it’s an unpopular view. Somebody else pointed out that the FB/twitter shares of this story will hit their intended audience, who wasn’t us folks in the non-comments. That hadn’t occurred to me, but it’s a good point, I think.

        • shivaskeeper

It has to be posted somewhere to get online. Here there are official site feeds on the social media platforms plus staff and writers personal ones. Not all of them have the same followers. The more it’s shared the more chance unconnected people see it.

But again, it has to be posted somewhere first.

          • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

The day Wonkette has to post articles that so many of its regulars take as insulting just to get the word out to other social media platforms is the day I’m out.

And I’ve been here since Ana Marie and ass-fucking.

          • shivaskeeper

            I see it like this.

In the last few months there have been I don’t even know how many posts about sexual harrassers and abuse of power by those harrassers. Invariably there will be more than a handful of comments, by regular posters, one off drive-bys, incensed lurkers, or whoever else, that boil down to, “Nuh-uh, I never harassed or assaulted anyone so your entire premise is a lie and I am offended by this article because not all men”.

The post is not directed at them, but they still take offence because it was too general. Even if is spelled out clearly who exactly the post is directed at, they still take offence to it.

I see the same thing here. This post was clearly aimed at, if not the purity ponies, the lefter than left “I’m not a Democrat” who would rather assign blame than than work to fix anything and will still be assigning blame in 2019 when this bit of pain hits hard.

IDK, for me it’s easy to not take things personally if they are not directed specifically at me. Lillet a result of who knows how many mass ass chewings in the Army that had nothing to do with me, my actions, or anything I even knew was happening before the ass chewing happened.

          • WomanInThePersistence

I generally don’t rush to take offense. People sometimes word things awkwardly. Hell, I sometimes word things awkwardly. Just to maintain sanity, it’s important to have a little give.

But yeah, I am offended by this article. Big time.

          • shivaskeeper

            No issue from me.

          • sarafina

            Bye.

        • Prollynottoday

That’s what I was thinking too. I think we have asked Bernie People way too many times “so how the fuck are you gonna get that thru the House and Senate?” So they go and commiserate among themselves about their “movement.”

        • sarafina

Because she writes what she writes. I’m reasonably sure no one had a gun to your head and made you read what she wrote. Grow up, and geet over yourself.

    • Martini Ambassador 🍸

Well, believe it or not, I did read some hand-wringy things today on the intertubes (not here, btw) about how Dems didn’t do enough to stop this shitshow of a bill from passing. My take here is that KM is reacting to that stupidity, not to what anybody here has said.

      • Roni Raven, Sweet Lump

        Key words: “not here”.

      • tehbaddr

It went straight down party line! What else could be done?

      • DT

Except she pulled the both sides move by “equally” blaming BernieBros with normal Democrats.

        • Kyu

Because both are culpable to some degree?

          • DT

            No, they are not.

          • MC Planck

Kyu said “some,” not “same.” Bernie-dead enders are clearly culpable to “some” degree.

Dog knows nobody objects to passionate Bernie voters who pulled the lever for HRC in the general. It’s the Trumpstein crowd. Also, I saw echoes of the Frankenstein fight here, too, as part of the purity battles.

        • Martini Ambassador 🍸

Which in the case of this bill, none of those are to blame. Or did I read that wrong?

    • SDGeoff3

      Thank you.

  • disqus_lWwzrwNaw6

‘SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GO FIGHT THE FASCISTS’ should be bumper-stickered onto everybody’s bumper, and embroidered onto everybody’s sampler, and spelled out with magnetic letters on everybody’s refrigerator.

    • Wonkette needs to sell this T-shirt. 3xl , please.

    • puredog

Under the Non-Commenting Rules, I would only note that if you “shut up” you won’t be using your words. And if you then go to “fight the fascists,” you must necessarily be using your fists (or worse). Under the regulations as interpreted by Zoom, J., it violates the Non-Commenting Rules to advocate punching Nazis. Therefore, I think it follows that Wonkette could not promulgate such a bumpersticker/t-shirt/refrigerator magnet.

Or, you could interpret the “Shut the fuck up” to apply to “about your goddamn feelings and fantasy-bowl Unicorn candidates,” as the article pretty clearly made clear by context. Also, one does not need to use fists to “fight the fascists,” as one can use an index finger to punch a ballot. Also, one does not need to speak to punch a ballot.

Thank you, KM. I agree and I get it. We don’t need anymore manufactured drama.

  • DT

But the whole “as a non-Dem” thing makes me think you’re not qualified to make this post.

    • shivaskeeper

She is talking to her non-Den peers.

      • DT

That’s not really how that passage reads, though.

The second person point of view is confusing.

          • shivaskeeper

            I agree. I re-read it.

        • shivaskeeper

As a whole that’s how I read it.

      • SDGeoff3

I’m happy to read anyone’s opinion, expressed clearly and fairly with no malice intended. irritation is not malice.
I have learned through experience that it is useless to have an existential crisis over a difference of opinion.
Taking offense is your own decision.

        • shivaskeeper

I am not taking offense. I was not called out by name, ideology, or actions. There is no offence for me to take here.

          • SDGeoff3

I’m sad to tell you that I was agreeing with you. I shall change the phrase accordingly.

          • shivaskeeper

            No issue.

      • Ill-Advised

I can’t reasonably infer that from what she wrote. Throwing in the “as a non-dem…” seems pretty clear to me she’s speaking her mind. Unless she really is drunk, high, or too mad to care.

I have no problem with that. I think on this site most of us understand that the context determines much if not all of the meaning. Fuck your candidate, fuck my candidate. (I’d say fuck Trump but then I’d have to touch him.) Vote for people who will save us from the goddamned fascist creep that has been happening at an accelerated fucking pace since November 2016. If you can’t do this, then sit the fuck down, shut the fuck up, and let the adults handle things.

I’m Jewish, okay? I know what writing on the wall looks like. I’m disabled – which means I literally cannot emigrate anywhere else because they take one look at you and laugh. I like living. Please help me make it so that I and many others may live longer.

    • SDGeoff3

      Thank you.

    • h4rr4r

      Disabled and Jewishes?
They are going to have a heck of a time figuring out why but the end result is the same.

      • Kyu

        Huh?

        • h4rr4r

The Nazis used the same solution to deal with those of the Hebrew persuasion as they did with the disabled.

So future Nazis will be unsure of why they should kill you, spoiled for choice, but they will know they should.

          • Kyu

Ah. Thanks, I have surgery scheduled later this week and I can’t have coffee and I swear it’s killing me.

          • WomanInThePersistence

Well, that sucks. I hope it’s nothing too serious. But still, surgery is scary.

          • h4rr4r

Good luck with the surgery and I feel terrible for your plight.

          • Kyu

Surgery should be routine, knock wood, but I can’t have anything that’s caffeinated, and decaf is an abomination I do not stock in this household.

    • FWIW as a fellow Jewish you can probably qualify for aliyah despite your disabilities, and from what I understand they’ll pay for Hebrew lessons, housing for something like a year, help finding work, etc. AFAIK you just have to be able to prove at least one of your parents or grandparents was also Jewish. I have a lot of serious criticisms of Israel’s government, but if antisemitism gets bad enough I still might consider it, because it’s the one place on the planet where I’m virtually guaranteed never to be persecuted on the grounds of ethnicity. I don’t want to go through all the trouble of fleeing antisemitism and obtaining citizenship in another country only to have to do it a second time.

      Good luck with the surgery.

  • going4baroque

I was thinking that this article was referencing the theory that the democrats in congress were relatively pretty damn quietly passive about the tax cuts for the rich when compared to the vociferous shouting against the republican moves against Obamacare. The perceived relative passivity of Democrats in the House and Senate toward the tax cuts, the theory goes, was evidence that they were quietly in support of the money being going to the donors, because the Democratic Party donors were getting in on the largess.
And naturally since they all make over $100,000 yearly, they were also passive because they were getting a sweet cut. Chris Matthews mentioned the theory briefly on a clip that I watched recently. I don’t watch much from the media, so the theory may be quite pervasive among the media types.

    • aktlib101

Well, I also saw this, a few days ago:
“Why aren’t Dems in Congress raising more hell to oppose the worst GOP tax bill ever?”
      https://www.rawstory.com/2017/11/why-arent-dems-in-congress-raising-more-hell-to-oppose-the-worst-gop-tax-bill-ever/

“So why are the Democrats not making more noise about a giant reverse-Robinhood scheme, that at least on the Senate side, also includes moves to gut Obamacare by ending the tax penalty for not carrying health insurance. If passed, that provision would allow millions to drop their coverage, which in turn, would raise premiums for everyone else. Remember how last summer Dems rose in the House and Senate to remind Republicans that tens of thousands of voters in their districts would lose their healthcare?

The answer—and it’s a theory, but one honed from covering national politics—is too many Democrats across Congress are still beholden to wealthier constituents, whether individuals who contribute to their campaigns, corporate employers who threaten to leave if they don’t get more corporate welfare, or people in their social circles who get invitations to Kennedy Center galas.”

Unfortunately, we have a two party system and Citizen United has ruined politics

      • ltmcdies

considering not one Dem voted for this monstrosity, I call bullshit

      • MC Planck

All the noise the Dems made about Obamacare didn’t do jack shit.

Three Republicans saved Obamacare. Dems could have stayed home and drank absinthe for all their efforts mattered.

But sure, let’s go on blaming the party not in power for everything wrong the Republicans do.

        (sigh)

    • MC Planck

So if the Dems pull out all the stops and save something critical like Obamacare, that becomes the new standard, and they’re expected to sustain the same level of resistance and success even while the public goes back to sleep.

The Dems had people in wheelchairs clogging the place for Obamacare. Did they have that for the tax bill? And even then, the Dems only saved health care BECAUSE OF THE REPUBLICANS.

McCain, Collins, and Murkowskie saved Obamacare. Not Dems.

Dog on a biscuit but this country is just too dumb to operate a democracy.

      • going4baroque

re: So if the Dems pull out all the stops and save something critical like Obamacare …

in other words, doing the job they were elected to do? Yeah, that’s about it.
Energetically oppose any act that promotes an advance toward a more secure oligarchy, whether they have the public support or no.

I never said it was the Dems that saved Obamacare, I referenced the comparative energies expended in opposing the two separate and distinct Republican bills.
Again, it is the essence of their job, to promote the general welfare and oppose tyranny.

        • MC Planck

As I said elsewhere: this was not their job. This was like overtime; you can’t ask them to do it 24/7.

          • redblack

especially when chickenshit republicans hold debate in the wee hours of the night outside of regular order.

it should also be noted that every last democrat voted no.

          • going4baroque

sure I can, it’s not like they are being shot at in a warzone

      • going4baroque

and just one thing more regarding performance on the job: if you are undergoing triple-bypass surgery, I’m sure you’d expect that the surgeon who is cutting open your chest and slicing into your aorta to take just as much interest and apply just as much expertise as in all his previous operations in the theater. In other words, to not treat you any differently than all the successful surgeries that he accomplished before you came under the knife. Think about it and contribute to the intelligence of humanity.

        • MC Planck

The difference is that what the Dems did for Obamacare was exceptional. It was above and beyond the call of duty. It was governance by massive public involvement. And it was completely pointless, since in the end only Republicans could save Obamacare.

TMI I doubt there will be any jokes on late night when this is more widely known. I mean, what’s funny about a young woman steaming an old man’s pants?

White House communications director Hope Hicks steamed President Trump’s suits on the 2016 campaign trail while he was wearing them, according to an upcoming book on the campaign. Trump would reportedly yell at Hicks to “get the machine!”

“And Hope would take out the steamer and start steaming Mr. Trump’s suit, while he was wearing it! She’d steam the jacket first and then sit in a chair in front of him and steam his pants,” Lewandowski writes, according to the Post.

          • SDGeoff3

            Yes.

        • Kyu

It’s about everyone still whining that Trump is Hillary’s fault. It’s not. Or at the very least, she is but one actor in a sea of many, and it doesn’t fucking matter at this point, because while our country is fucked up, we would like it to not get fucked up a la Nazi Germany, Amin’s Uganda, Pol Pot’s Cambodia and the like.

        • MC Planck

Bernie Bros, Hillary haters, Pelosi haters, and everyone in the mainstream media.

          • And, all Democrats, since we’re only “moderately less bad” than Republicans? That’s pretty fucking inflammatory.

          • MC Planck

Eh, maybe I didn’t notice that part because I’m really, really pissed of at Dems right now for being so easily trolled.

But it’s also true: Dems are only moderately less bad. I live in Australia now, with more socialism than Bernie ever dreamed of. What the Dems as a party want is far to the right of what I live with now. I would totally dump the Dems for an actual socialist party.

But the way from there to here is through the Dems. Which is the point of the post (I think).

Heh, NYT, tell us something we don’t know:
“Emails Dispute White House Claims That Flynn Acted Independently on Russia”
    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/02/us/russia-mcfarland-flynn-trump-emails.html

“On Dec. 29, a transition adviser to Mr. Trump, K. T. McFarland, wrote in an email to a colleague that sanctions announced hours before by the Obama administration in retaliation for Russian election meddling were aimed at discrediting Mr. Trump’s victory. The sanctions could also make it much harder for Mr. Trump to ease tensions with Russia, “which has just thrown the U.S.A. election to him,” she wrote in the emails obtained by The Times.

It is not clear whether Ms. McFarland was saying she believed that the election had in fact been thrown. A White House lawyer said on Friday that she meant only that the Democrats were portraying it that way.

But it is evident from the emails — which were obtained from someone who had access to transition team communications — that after learning that President Barack Obama would expel 35 Russian diplomats, the Trump team quickly strategized about how to reassure Russia. The Trump advisers feared that a cycle of retaliation between the United States and Russia would keep the spotlight on Moscow’s election meddling, tarnishing Mr. Trump’s victory and potentially hobbling his presidency from the start.”

If you haven’t read it already, the WaPo story on Mueller’s investigation today is 1st rate:

    Politics
Inside the secretive nerve center of the Mueller investigation

By Robert Costa, Carol D. Leonnig and Josh Dawsey December 2 at 1:55 PM

    (snippets)
“In the past two months, Mueller and his deputies have received private debriefs from two dozen current and former Trump advisers, each of whom has made the trek to the special counsel’s secure office suite.”

W.H. Counsel Don McGahn was interviewed by Mueller’s prosecutors for a full day on Thursday, according to WaPo.

McGahn was scheduled to return Friday to complete his interview, but Mueller postponed to let McGahn manage the response to Flynn’s plea.

Mueller’s investigators were particularly interested in how certain foreign officials got on Kushner’s calendar and the discussions that Flynn and Kushner had about those encounters, people familiar with the questions tell WaPo.

“The volume of questions about Kushner in their interviews surprised some witnesses.

“I remember specifically being asked about Jared a number of times,” said one witness.”

We need to have a civil discussion among Democrats and not let ourselves get trolled, either by hotheads or by imposters. It’s tricky because this website is an escape-valve for pent-up frustrations and people want to yell at all the fucking idiots who are ruining this country. But a natural side effect of that is going to be that sometimes we end up yelling at each other.

I’m not even going to pretend that I’m not part of the problem, because I am, but I will say that I have been consciously working on it. I honestly try to be a convener of perspectives, work with the difficult emotions people are feeling, and deescalate conflict. I do not always succeed, but I sometimes do. There’s no tally of the number of times I decided *not* to tell somebody to STFU, but it’s definitely up there.

It’s natural to say to one’s problematic allies “ZOMG, Do you want NAZIS to WIN? Are you a NAZI? Seriously STFU and help me fight NAZIS”. That’s a natural, even defensible, reaction. Except it doesn’t work. It just makes people defensive and fight back. We end up trolling ourselves.

The Democratic party will always be rife with debates. Part of life is dealing with that. And on every side of every debate there will always be hacks, opportunists, and morons. Its in the interest of party (and our psyches) for us, on a personal level, to deal with this gracefully. Most of the time it’s in our interest to presume that our adversaries are either a) well-meaning people, perhaps compromised with a limited attention span and patience and b) alt-right trolls. So give people the benefit of the doubt or just ignore them. Don’t tell people to STFU. Maybe it feels good to say it, but that’s not good for them and it’s not healthy for you.

    • Jeffery Campbell

      I like you.

      • Greg Comlish

        Thanks!

    • Are you one of the people trying to blame dems for the GOPs criminality?

The little fellow is starting to ask why mom and dad are no longer living in the same house because that would be great in his perception. I am going to sleep but when I wake up I would love to read some responses that make sense to a 4 year old boy because I dont know any that would explain it and at the same time soothe his feelings

    • Rick Hill

Kids are pretty smert and able to handle a lot. Just be direct and simple. Because mommy/daddy is a bitch/complete asshole. That’ll satisfy them.

    • Resistor Radio

As long as he knows that mommy and daddy love him and nothing could change that, y’all will be alright. *hugs*. I know it’s not easy, not trying to be flip.

        • ariel_gee_398

He thinks that, but you and she know that it wouldn’t be better, and he’s going to have to trust that decision. Don’t know how you convey that to a four year old, though.

    • Debbie the Unpaid Protester

remind him, no matter what else you tell him, that it is NOT his fault (kids have a way of blaming themselves for everything). Sometimes mommies and daddies can be better friends when they’re not living together.

    • WomanInThePersistence

Just emphasize that mom and dad love him very much.

    • h4rr4r

      The truth.
You guys are better people apart than together. You both love him, and will both always be there for him.

      • Robbertjan Brandenburg

        thanks. solid advice.

    • SDGeoff3

In no position to advise, I offer the following thought; it’s not going to come to you overnight, don’t fib, and think of how you want him to understand it when he is 18, or even your age. And keep it simple because he is only 4. Don’t use concepts you couldn’t understand at that age. Because you probably don’t remember a lot from when you were 4.

      • Robbertjan Brandenburg

        Thank you, love the advice.

    • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

The advice I’ve seen is that whatever you say should be done together, if at all possible. That way there is a feeling of mutual decision.

“You know Mommy and Daddy have been arguing a lot lately, and we always
seem to be in a grumpy mood with each other. Well, [Mommy/Daddy] has decided that [he/she] needs to take some time and [he/she]’s going to move out on [his/her] own. Sometimes things happen with mommies and daddies. We’re really sorry that it happened, but it’s not anything you’ve done. We’ll always be your parents, and we’ll always love you.”

      • Robbertjan Brandenburg

Thanks but we have been separated 3 years ago. it’s just now that he starts asking guestions.

          • Ω cynmac’s reclaiming her time

It may be better to talk about what is really bothering him, rather than the ancient history of why you broke up. 4 year olds are simple like that.

          • Robbertjan Brandenburg

            Good call, thanks.

    • Shan

Just make sure he knows it’s not his fault. You don’t have to tell him personal details about you and his mom, because that’s grownup stuff and it’s personal. That’s what I told my kids when they were little and wanted to know why.

They are 20 and 16 now and I still haven’t told them a lot (and some of it I NEVER will). They’ve managed to figure quite a bit out on their own, though, even though I tried to shield them from the worst of their dad’s traits over the years.

      • Robbertjan Brandenburg

There is no fault in his eyes luckiliy. ok, off to bed because he wil be up in 6 hours.

        • Shan

Yes, but their little brains have lots of thoughts even at that age.

        • Shan

Or, since I didn’t realize your son was so young when you and his mom split, you could just tell him that not all parents live together in the same house – which is true – because they’re happier living separately. Sure, it’s a little inconvenient (or whatever else) sometimes, but that’s just the way you and his mom decided would be best for your family.

  • I saw a few tweets from people blaming Dems for the tax scam bill, and I clicked this article thinking it would be about that. But after reading it, I don’t know wtf it’s supposed to be about. I do know it reads as very patronizing–for example: “I don’t like your faves. Let’s get that out of the way up front. I have met them, you see, and they are people just like us.” Really, you think you have to meet politicians in person to know that they’re people who can be assholes? No shit.

I also don’t feel like the “Dems are a moderately less bad option” philosophy is very helpful right now. Elect Democrats and save the world. It’s literally that black and white at this point.

    • Everrett Fanuelli

I agree to a degree, this whole “Dems are a moderately less bad option” is such a tired excuse. You’re looking at the difference between insuring 13 million and uninsuring 13 million. You’re looking at providing funding for better public schools versus more money for private and charter schools. You’re looking at equal rights for all people versus rights for only those who meet a certain threshold. You’re looking at loan forgiveness for public service and low interest rates versus for-profit lenders deciding to charge you whatever they want in interest. I would say “moderately” doesn’t come into play. We need to start changing our language and instead of saying the Dems are the lesser of the bad, we need to say that the Dems are the better choice of the two.

      • Phried Ω

Aggressive apathy begets the current state of affairs. Nihilists are even more counterproductive than anarchists.

It’s good, SDGeoff. If there is one thing we have up here, it’s decent wine and good food. Of course some of our better restaurants originated in San Diego but the Goat and Vine a locally owned place that is very, very good. There’s also a great little Cuban place just down the same street named “Little Havana” and it is also delicious. I’ve never had black beans that tasted so good in my life. I don’t even normally like black beans but they’ve got them down.

It sucks to be an hour away from the city (San Diego) but we have some very good places to eat.

The Goat and Vine and Little Havana are good places to eat whenever you’re up this way. They are both in Old Town, right off the 15.

I have my own issues with the Democratic Party and it’s leadership from time to time, but I don’t expect to agree with anyone all the time, and I also don’t trust the judgment of the “Dems are a moderately less bad option” crowd, even when I’m largely in sync with them politically. Gonna leave you with a couple of pictures of the quarry in my garden, ready to withstand winter, and a little story to go with them. And then taking off for an early night, because I am NOT handling this stress well.
    Stay frosty, everypony.

Minty shivered and put the last few sticks into the office stove. She didn’t need pegasus weather magic to know winter was near – she could feel it in her bones today, and she’d be glad to return home.
She’d dropped by the quarry one last time to make sure things were properly buttoned up for the season. She was proud of the work her ponies had accomplished this year. The trackwork was finished, retaining walls controlled loose earth, and they’d even uncovered a new seam of illudium phosdex, ready to be dug up and shipped out when they opened again in a few months. There was talk that the new refinery would be opened and track laid down by summer, meaning that she could finally take the stallions off cartage duty. It would be a busy and productive season.
But that was for next year. The fire was out and the air was cooling rapidly. She tugged the curtains closed and nosed the screen door open. Hearth’s-warming Eve was only a few days away, and in her distant home town her family was waiting. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/53922137e6c10d927eaa44c03ba87dce2f9f6ce16af6f05dae97f1d8ffd89a78.png

I agree that this is an unprecedented crisis. I was genuinely in tears last night after this malicious, punitive, obscene ‘tax bill’ passed the Senate, and after reading more details about what it will do. Linda is right that the only thing that matters is taking these people out somehow so that they no longer have power, but the worst part is I no longer see any mechanism for doing that. Voting is becoming one of the things that a lot of us are no longer going to be allowed to do for one reason or another. These are horrible people who wake up every morning and say, How can we wreck the world today? I don’t know how we’re going to survive. I guess becoming a third world country, complete with dictator, starving poor, and a general atmosphere of despair is what we have to look forward to.

Annie Towne is tired, as am I. All is not lost. The Senate has passed their version of the middle class tax hike. Now they have to reconcile the two. Anybody who cares knows who benefits and who gets screwed by this, and they’re not saying ‘Oh, well’.
One important thing to do is to keep repeating who it benefits and who gets screwed. As often as possible.
They have congressmen and senators on the radio and television out-and-out lying about what this does. We have to be vigilant in pushing back with the truth.

        • Wonky McUbtrye

Oh, I’m not an optimist. I think things are going to get worse and worse in more creative ways until we all die. But, I also know I’ve been wrong about a lot of things. It’s not optimism so much as taking my pessimism with a grain of salt.

      • Impatient

A few days ago I bought a red onion on a whim. Not sure what I was gonna do with it.

Just now, after several days staring at it on the counter and again on a whim, I sliced it up, coated it with olive oil and put it in a 350-degree oven.

Should I add some fresh ground pepper or just leave it be? Give it an hour or maybe two? I dunno. I guess my schnoz will let me know when it’s all “cooked” up proper.

    • Cousin Itt un Mondialiste

      Is it a bloomin’ onion?

      • Bemused Tralfamadorian

        He can still be pardoned.

        • Hamilton Ω, AKA Formerly DN

My understanding is that if Flynn is pardoned, he will be unable to take the fifth during subsequent questioning. I’m sure some legal beagle will chime-in if I’m wrong about that.

          • Bemused Tralfamadorian

That’s interesting, and something I’d not even considered. Would also be keen to hear from a lawyering type on this.

          • shivaskeeper

You are correct. Depending on the pardon, If it is a pardon for this one crime he plead guilty too, he could still take the fifth regarding anything else. If it was a blanket pardon for this and anything else he might have done, then not only is accepting the pardon admission of guilt, there is no Fifth Amendment protection as he can no longer be prosecuted therefore there is no risk of self incrimination.

          • Hamilton Ω, AKA Formerly DN

          • jaspersdad

All of the them. The Borowitz Report

Just hours after Donald J. Trump mistakenly sent an angry tweet intended for the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, to a random woman named Theresa May Scrivener with only six Twitter followers, the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, offered a vigorous defense of his action.

“The President may have attacked the wrong Theresa, but all Theresas represent a real threat,” Sanders said. Doubling down on the new White House policy against women named Theresa, Sanders said that attacking women with the same first name as the British Prime Minister “sends her a powerful message.”

While Sanders put the best face on Trump’s decision to send an angry tweet to the wrong Theresa, behind the scenes White House officials were scrambling to make sure that he had imposed sanctions on the right Korea.
