Tomorrow is the beginning of the reduced, 45-day open enrollment period to sign up for individual plans on the Affordable Care Act exchanges. and the state-run exchanges should be up and running, and as we keep saying, the ACA is pretty damned hard to kill, even though the Trump administration has been trying its darnedest to sabotage the program and confuse people about whether the ACA even exists anymore. Unless there are more big Trump-Russia developments — or maybe especially if there are — expect the day to start with the “presdident” tweeting that the ACA really is dead, because the man can’t stop lying.

The administration’s decision to cut the open enrollment promotion budget by 90% is expected to lead to at least a million people just plain not signing up, for starters. That’s without all the other steps Trump has taken to harm the program. But things aren’t altogether grim for the ACA! In nine of the dozen states that set up their own exchanges, the states are actually running open enrollment past the December 15 cutoff for the federal exchange, for instance. Several states are also spending state funds to offset — at least in part — federal cuts to grants for “navigators” who help people pick a plan that will fit their needs. Nonprofit groups are also working to promote open enrollment, from the plucky Obama HHS veterans running Get America Covered to efforts by big tech companies:

Several tech companies with a wide reach among freelance workers — including Fiverr, DoorDash,, Etsy and Postmates — aim to reach millions of people through in-app messages, proprietary email lists, blog posts and other social media, said Brent Messenger of Fiverr. “Basically, every communications tool these partners have, we’re going to throw them at this problem,” he said.

All those efforts, of course, are no replacement for a government that actually does its damn job, or at the very least, isn’t actively trying to strangle healthcare for people because it promised it would strangle healthcare. The cuts to navigator groups are deep, and are going to hurt. A lot:

No state took a bigger hit than Indiana, which lost 82 percent of its anticipated funding from HHS’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. That is why Julia Holloway, who directs Affiliated Service Providers of Indiana’s navigator program, spent her birthday on Sept. 19 cutting the staff paid through that grant. It left her with one full-time and three part-time navigators, along with several funded through other federal programs, who will serve only Indianapolis and two nearby counties instead of the entire state.

South Carolina will be going from 62 navigators statewide to just 30, and will probably face more cuts for next year. Georgia will lose half of its 42 paid navigators, although it’s trying to get donations and train volunteers to pick up some of the slack. And Ohio, which used to have navigators in all 88 of its counties, has seen over two-thirds of its funding cut, so organizers are trying to persuade libraries to run volunteer signup events.

Take Georgia Republican Senator Johnny Isakson’s comment on the likely effects of this year’s truncated open enrollment as you will:

Maybe this enrollment period will produce the kind of problems necessary to get everybody’s attention that we need to get our house in order, and do the work we need to do to get the program fixed[.]

That would be the same Johnny Isakson who voted for the Senate’s attempts to pass “repeal-and delay” and “skinny repeal” in July, so by “fix” he means “dismantle.”

And yet! It’s not all terrible news. Even in a Trump HHS document that’s aimed at showing how terrible the ACA is, Topher Spiro of the Center for American Progress found yet another surprising indicator of how resilient the ACA has been:

What’s that chart? ENHANCE:

Of course, it’ll be harder for people to find the most affordable plans on their own, because the administration has been working so hard at its fuckery. And when ACA enrollment declines this year, thanks almost entirely to Trump’s sabotage, we can expect him to tout that as proof the program is failing. It’s going to be a shitty few years for people who rely on the ACA for healthcare, but that’s all the more reason to make sure we fight to keep Trump from sabotaging it further. Get out and support efforts to get people enrolled. Call your damned representatives. Elect Democrats, for Christ’s sake. Most important: take care of yourself and stay angry — then put that anger to work.

OT, but someone just posted to my FB that an incident in lower Manhattan has left several people dead. Stay safe, Big Apple Wonkers!

It was a car accident. Someone drove a Home Depot truck on the bike path and killed two people.

          • shastakoala

Yes but 6 dead, fifteen injured along 7 blocks. They are still trying to figure out what exactly happened tho.

          • Carpe Vagenda

Wow, really? The last report I saw said two dead and a bunch injured. That’s a really popular bike path, though, and Stuyvesant just let out.

          • IdRatherBeDancing

yup. I lived near Westside Highway and used that path many many times. I know exactly where it happened

          • Carpe Vagenda

And of course although none of the first eyewitness reports mentioned it somebody told the Daily Mail that the guy was yelling mooselimb things.

I guess it’s a good thing NYC makes it hard to get guns.

          • ariel_gee_398

FWIW, you could do a lot more harm just plowing into a sidewalk around that area than you would on the bike path. So if it was intentional, fortunately the person was bad at it.

          • IdRatherBeDancing

Actually that bike path is very crowded especially when you get closer to lower Manhattan where the path and street kinda morph into one seamless road and path

          • ariel_gee_398

Crowded, yes, but people are moving and have some ability to get out of the way, as opposed to the large groups of people waiting to cross at streets on a lot of those corners.

          • IdRatherBeDancing

ok whatever — I’ve just been on that path about a million times and there is no car traffic on the bike path — hence he was able to barrel down it unimpeded going 50mph for about a mile, according to eyewitness — cannot do the same on the streets in Manhattan way way too much traffic to do anything but inch along. So I’ll agree to disagree that this was some boneheaded plot.

I received a letter from NJ FamilyCare last week saying final notice to renew my Medicaid. I didn’t get any notices before this one! It’s not due till the 10th and I was able to do it online, but I’m still worried that somehow I won’t have it renewed. I got another letter a few days after saying that I was denied coverage for a root canal that was just finished. It’s a few hundred bucks that I don’t have at the moment, but I have been going there for years. They’ll let me pay it off incrementally. I hope!

You would be surprised at how many millennials are racist arseholes

      • Three Finger Salute

I think their side is winning the Internet, and therefore capturing the narrative. There’s a video from Right Wing Watch about YouTube personalities making a name for themselves as far-right hate leaders. The like/dislike ratio is something like 200 likes to 2,000 dislikes.

The very same personalities mentioned in the video — names include “Black Pigeon Speaks,” “Sargon of Akkad,” “StyxHexenhammer666,” among others — are all over the comments section claiming victory that they got their thousands of cult members to click downvote and even report it to Google.

There is no equivalent to this massive phenomenon among liberals. No inclusive and tolerant version of Milo, no Rebel Media for the Liberal Party of Canada, no one in mainstream “manufactured” Hollywood anywhere near as popular as the “influencers” on social media’s widespread network of hate. The “stars” of tomorrow are villains, not heroes. Bernie notwithstanding, the Democratic Party itself is full of olds. Right Wing Watch itself was founded by Norman Lear, himself a product of the ’70s. The counterculture of today’s rebels against their parents isn’t about peace and love, but a racial holy war!

Here’s the video, if you’re interested. If you want to see proof, look at the comments. If you want to maintain some semblance of faith in humanity, avoid at all costs. Suffice it to say that ignoring it doesn’t make it go away. We’re losing the younger generation, and I don’t know how to counter this, because I have nowhere near the level of chutzpah or self-confidence to start one of these outlets myself.

  • Three Finger Salute

I wish we had a national public healthcare system that anyone could use if they wanted to. As it stands, there’s a social and cultural stigma against being “on Obamacare,” which is no different from being “on welfare.” There’s a very strong hatred in this country of people who, for whatever circumstances they find themselves in, rely on the tax-funded safety net for even basic needs, whether it’s food-stamps or healthcare or housing.

Yet poverty doesn’t seem to be the only factor in the hatred of public service recipients. Even public schooling is viewed negatively, and the children who attend there looked upon as “lessers” who went to “government cheese school,” despite there not being any “means tested” requirements to “qualify” to attend public K-12 or university.

There’s a very strong movement in this country to do away with public schooling altogether, to make education even at the primary-grade level unaffordable for most families, and to require entrance exams for children to even go to school at all — with no option if they don’t meet the cut. Save for “home-schooling,” which is viewed as superior anyway because then the (usually un/underqualified) parents can either feed their kids religious garbage masquerading as a valid curriculum, and/or force the little woman to stay home 24/7 and “mind the children” while hubby goes out to be the breadwinner. No hubby? No books and no food for you, whore!

Public employees — especially teachers — are vilified as leeches who “couldn’t cut it in the private sector” too, except to give lip service to “supporting the troops” and then call them parasites if they end up homeless, suffer from mental health disorders, etc. Americans have a greater respect for serial killers than civil servants. It’s no accident either that the “helping professions” pay peanuts and often end up becoming a self-feeding circle whereby social workers end up becoming clients of the agencies they work at. Let alone that said professions are predominantly staffed by women.

Suffice it to say, though, that I wish this wasn’t the case and that the very concept of a public anything wasn’t heretical to support, let alone dehumanizing to make use of. I’ve already decided that, if I don’t have a steady job by the time my parents are gone, I’m just going to die rather than “go on welfare,” because I couldn’t stomach knowing that I was an enemy parasite in the eyes of my fellow Americans. It’s “bad enough” that both my parents were unionized public schoolteachers, and I went to public school from kindergarten through university. But to be an Obamacare client? I might as well start sewing a Caduceus and a Hope and Change logo on my jacket now.

I hate how Republicans have poisoned the minds and hearts of this country.

The greatest trick that the devil republicans ever played, is that every person is an individual that needs nothing but bootstraps to become rich. Ignorance of the last 12,000 years of human cooperation to achieve civilization is ignored. Roads, schools, sewers, ad infinitum is ignored. Being fucking stupid to everything is now viewed as an asset. History is that book that you cannot be bothered to read.

    • AtTheTip

Well, Three Finger, I agree with you about how the Republicans have poisoned the hearts and minds of the country, I’m strongly pro-public school, believe me, and I’m a union boy from way back (chief negotiator on a CBA bargaining committee back in the ’90’s), but now that I’m self-employed, I’m on Obamacare- have been since it started- but I don’t think that people perceive me as being on welfare. I work hard. People who know me see that. I’m also very sick, in that I have two chronic illnesses- cancer and epilepsy- that have been self-evident to everyone around me. Aside from those two chronic, so-far non-lethal illnesses, I had emergency surgery for an aneurysm that, without Obamacare, would have left me penniless, or dead. I was coded on the operating table. So I would counsel care in stating that you would rather die than be known publicly as an Obamacare client. That is scary. I am proud to be an Obamacare client. I am also very very very happy to be alive, and my loved ones are also happy I’m alive. Take care, and keep fighting the good fight!

      • I agree. (I’m on it as well and it’s my day job).

I may be just a humble drunk country doctor , but I don’t think my liver can take this administration.

  • Saxo the Grammarian

Yep, as a newly minted independent contractor, I will be perusing the offerings at coveredca-dot-com later this week. Thanks, Obama!

    No, really… thanks!

  • House0fTheBlueLights

In an absolutely astonishing development, there is a new PPC on the IL exchange, in my price range, with a not-terrifying deductible ($3K) and that includes my doctor AND the hospital I would choose if I got to choose. Thanks Obama.

    • yup. weirdly. this year is OK in IL.

  • Me not sure

My self employed daughter signs up tomorrow.

  • Joel Dent

So if my work offers insurance can I still choose to buy on the exchange? Because my work insurance is both awful and 200 bucks a week.

    • Opalescent Riddles

An employer might allow you to get a waiver if you are insured through an alternative plan. They might reimburse you the amount that they would have contributed if you’d joined one of their plans. It’s worth looking into.

      • Alexis Rook

I just went ahead and signed up through the exchange, and I’ll just do what I have to to keep it.

        • Opalescent Riddles

I wish you all the best going forward, and that your new plan is more cost-effective and has better benefits than what your employer offers.

    • you can totally buy on the exchange, you just won’t qualify for help (lowering premiums, reducing out of pocket costs) IF your emp insurance meets minimum essential coverage (MEC). MEC means covering the essential benefits the ACA laid out AND being less than 9.5% of your monthly income.

doc can help you hook up with me (not in that way). if you need ACA help.

      • Alexis Rook

        It’s way more than 9.5%
        250 a week means it’s about 25%

        • then go ahead and sign up. when you get to any questions about emp ins – you can say it’s not offered (as it legitimately doesn’t meet the criteria for affordable insurance).

Wife, boys, and I are on tricare through the National Guard; that socialized medicine is a big reason I’m still in uniform. My fervent hope is that, 30 years from now, I’m going to tell the kids that and they’re going to contemplate a retirement home, because that story is insane and grandpa lost it.

And finally, Monsieur, a wafer-thin mint.

…It’s only a tiny little thin one.

These dimocrats that you speak of electing. Where can one find them? The last two I voted for were consummate losers. One was this woman, she writes books and is married to a philanderer and the other is really repub lite, goes by the name billy boy nelson, does nothing, never did nothing and hangs out with rubio. Wait. Nelson did do something. One time he went up in the space shuttle, cost us 20 million ameros. Dead weight isn’t cheap when it’s going into space. And two years ago he went hunting for anacondas in the swamps with his faithful indian guide Subramanyan Chandrasekhar

Where they actively engaged in dismantling Obamacare? Or would they have voted for improvement of the ACA (no matter how insignificant)? If it’s the latter than they are a zillion times better than the Republican alternative.

    • jez

well, in the uk there is pretty much the same problem as our political system consists of the rulling tory party, deeply unpopular chaotic and unhappy but nowhere near as far right as the republican party and then the opposition is the labour party who under tony blaire were dragged kicking and screaming into ‘the third way’ which is basically neo-liberalism under a different name.since the labour party have had a new leader who is far more of an old school slightly reformist social democrat, this has caused massive problems for with sitting labour MPs who were elected under Blaire. But basically who ever you vote for you still get the same bunch of hasbeens, witless twats and con artists in governemnt by way of lobbying.Interestingly labour became wildly popular under the old school more socialst leader but his problem is that the party is still infested by more right wing Blairists who managed to squirell themselves into positions which make them hard to remove.

I just curious between the histrionic byline writers who contribute to this blog, how do the three exchange butt plugs? Via Fed Ex? The new left meme is: if you like your sodomizers and pedo’s, you can keep you sodomizers and pedo’s . Reach around score = 5.
