Morning Wonketariat! Here’s some of the things we may be talking about today, but first, A SQUEAKY SNOW LEOPARD!

While you were sleeping, the Senate passed the Republican budget which conveniently have the Trump tax cuts for the super rich hammered onto the back end.

If you’re still waking up thinking Trump’s White House directives are a fat, racist fever dream, take a look at these internal policy memos that highlight the Muslim ban blanket restrictions on Muslim majority countries, bailing on the World Health Organization, and letting childhood obesity rates break existing scales.

Tea Party wingnut turned CIA director Mike Pompeo claimed the CIA has determined Russia didn’t affect the 2016 election outcome, which was certainly news to the entire intel community, which said the exact opposite in January. The CIA issued a clarification saying Pompeo hadn’t reversed anything, no, not at all.

Newly minted FBI director Chris Wray had words for people yesterday. They are mediocre words about morality and integrity.

B. Barry Bamz was in Virginia last night to whip people into gear for Ralph Northam’s gubernatorial run. HE’S BACK!

If you read Evan’s post on John Kelly’s statement, you may have been asking yourself, “Wait, why were US soldiers in Niger?Well, it’s complicated, so here’s some Morning Maddow to ‘splainer how a lack of office supplies (and genuine incompetence) may have resulted in the deaths of four Green Berets.

Florida Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson is livid that John Kelly accused her of taking “the money” for a new FBI building named for two fallen agents that opened in 2015, and constituents and local colleagues are backing up her up claims as she hadn’t even been in office when the buildings plans were given a green light.

A federal judge in Arizona denied former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s request to clear his record of his criminal conviction, Arpaio is currently throwing a tantrum.

Don’t believe the hype about Hillary Clinton ignoring Wisconsin voters; Scott Walker and the Wisconsin GOP led an active campaign to disenfranchise black voters, and there’s proof.

MOAR Republican olds are bailing of the House amid their frustration with Paul Ryan and the Tea Party crazies, and that’s going to make Ryan’s job even harder. Poor lad.

The DNC is appointing a slew of fresh new faces, but none of them are the from the super-left progressive side of the party, and that has some of the olds worried about the future of the party.

One of Trump’s golf courses SAYS it was giving millions of Ameros to charity. ACTUALLY, NPR took a gander at the books and found that’s a YUGE lie.

Alabama’s gay hatin’ racist Senate candidate forgot to tell the IRS his charity wrote him an IOU for $498,000 Ameros. Details, details.

Thomas Farr was Jesse Helms’s campaign manager in the 1980s and 1990s, and the lawyer who defended North Carolina’s voter ID laws making it harder for the poor and black people to vote. Naturally, Farr is being rewarded for his years of racial fuckery with a nomination to be a federal judge.

A new University of Virginia study has found there’s a belief among some dumbass medical students that black people are more tolerant of pain, and therefore don’t need pain meds. These kids clearly aren’t doing their homework.

Cops in upstate New York have been spying on a Black Lives Matter chapter, despite being told to stop by the New York DA’s office, according to new documents that detail efforts to surveil and build files on members. Expect Trump to pardon them before they’re even charged.

A new report from the Merit Systems Protection Board shows federal workers aren’t being slapped on the wrist because most of them aren’t actually fucking up — which comes as a slap in the face for jerks who keep trying to make it easier to “You’re Fired” federal workers.

Trump’s federal nominees have been showing up to work before Congress hires them for the the job. Yes, that’s illegal.

Recent raids on California grow houses have found surprising number of Chinese nationals running ad hoc businesses for the cultivation and sale of marijuana. Maybe grass DOES make you a commie?

HEY MICHIGAN! Your state just introduced a bill to ban community broadband — these laws make it impossible for small towns to build the municipal fiber infrastructure that gives you super fast, cheap and reliable Interwebz! STOP HB 5099!

North Carolina’s veto-proof GOP legislature is trying to curb stomp everything and anything Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper tries, and it’s trying to entrench itself in power for decades.

Vladimir Putin, a man who has held on to power for almost 20 years by imprisoning protesters and murdering journalists, had some talky time last night and felt it necessary to opine that Americans aren’t showing Donald Trump the respect Trump won fair and square.

Twitter is essentially giving the Senate’s Trump-Russia investigation a paper bag full of dog shit labeled “Russian stuff” so it doesn’t get accused of being a #FailWhale.

Senators John McCain, Amy Klobuchar and Mark Warner pulled the covers off the bill that would make political ads on the Internet more transparent. Suck it, Zuckerberg!

Paul Ryan was the keynote speaker at the Al Smith dinner last night, and he had some jokes. We don’t like Paul Ryan, but his staff seems like they worked hard to make him appear human.

An old who served in the Navy back in the 1960’s is admitting that he’s full of shit after being called out as a liar for going on Fox News, claiming he was a SEAL, and then spewing his love for Trump. This guy’s a phony! A big fat phony!

Dame Peggington Noonington ponders the case of one Sarah Palin, and how her rise and fall is, perhaps, a lesson, though it should be noted that Dame Noonington appears to have arrived at the memorabilia sale hungover, bottle still in hand. [Archive]

This Colorado Cub Scout who called out his state senator for allowing wife beaters to own guns was kicked out the Scouts, and we think that’s bullshit. Viva Ames Mayfield!

A federal judge in Arizona denied former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s request to clear his record of his criminal conviction, Arpaio is currently throwing a tantrum.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

    • Skwerl the Nazi Puncher

But now, with the pardon, there’s no opportunity to appeal, meaning the record of the conviction remains. And that, he said would be something that could be used against the former sheriff in any future criminal or civil case.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

      • This is why I love you all

      • Opalescent Riddles

In fact, the judge said there is case law showing that a pardon carries an imputation of guilt — and that acceptance is “a confession of it.”

In this case, Bolton said, Trump issued the pardon and Arpaio accepted it. And as she reads the law, that ends the case, but does not entitle the former sheriff to have his underlying conviction wiped out.

He did this to himself by accepting the pardon! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha [cough cough] ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha [wheeze] ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Perfectly illustrative of the average Trump supporter’s pathological inability to look within. They admire their President because he is, in their view, unpolished and unconventional. And white. But how dare this African-American woman do the same. White people can throw shit around and make a big mess because America is their house — the black woman, though, is still expected to shut up and clean up.

$25,000 /minute for security charged to we taxpayers of Florida. If that guy wants to spew his toxin, he or the organization that invited him should be on the hook for that.

    • bupkus231

I had heard last night that there had been 800 tickets made available for Spencer’s speech, but only about 400 were used. It was good to see that a good proportion of those went to protestors and not Nazis….

I, too, would like to know WHY the taxpayers are obligated to pay. I get the UF is a public university – but, just like with web fora, there’s lotsa of other spaces that Spencer could go to get his views heard, so why is UF obligated to allow him to speak there? As it is, UF’s president made the statement that no student groups sponsored the speech or even invited Spencer to speak. Apparently, Spencer and his group requested to rent space on campus, and UF was prohibited “by law” ( WTF, FL lege? Why you do this shit? ) from banning them for the content of their speech – but why does the uni have to bear the associated costs? Sue the fuck out of Spencer and his Nazis for those security costs ( even if such a suit would require spending taxpayer money ) and make damned sure that any future groips have to pay, too. ( I’m pretty sure that most rock concerts on uni property have to pay security and cleanup costs – so why not? )

Even the people in this administration we thought were half-decent are turning out to be complete scumbags. We are utterly fucked.

      • cmd resistor

They only seemed half decent in comparison to the Most SHitty Prez Ever.

      • alwayspunkindrublic

And it appalls me that even the so-called liberal media buys into this reverential, hands-off approach when talking about Kelly. Yeah, he served honorably once and lost a son; he deserves to be commended for that… but that’s not a moral waiver or a permanent get-out-of-jail-free card. William Calley was considered a good soldier until he lost his shit and massacred civilians.

        • cmd resistor

I was of the “hands off” opinion while he was being quiet, even felt sorry for him being put in a position of trying to keep some semblance of dignity. But then he blew it to hell.

    • shivaskeeper

He probably thinks he’s doing the right thing. He truly does. That should not make him exempt from rebuke though.

One of his biggest problems is that after 40 years as an officer, giving deference to and following orders from a President is not a habit he is going to be able to shake.

Of course this is also more proof that Trump destroys everything he touches also.

      • alwayspunkindrublic

Along with that is Trump’s ability to morally corrupt people around him. You’d think such an obvious shyster and buffoon would be so transparent as to make that unlikely. But people around him go all in and sell their souls.

        • Darlene Underdahl

Yes. They do corrupt the people around them. That’s why he’s lasted as long as he has.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

His private company actually employed very few people, so it’s easier to see how a malign cult of personality could take root. But now he’s got half the fucking country under his evil spell.

        • shivaskeeper

That part puzzles me. I know they, in this case the Gen Kelly, can see him for who and what he is. I can grasp taking the job and eating all the shit they are forced to eat if they see themselves as some sort of bulwark against Trump’s idiocy. That makes perfect sense to me.

They also know they will be unable to stand forever. They know the corruption will eventually get them as always happens.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

But as I said, he’s NOT a bulwark against Trump’s idiocy; if anything, that’s getting exponentially worse since he took the job. His little shitshow yesterday leads me to believe quite the opposite…that he buys in all the way to Trump’s agenda. That, or he’s got Stockholm Syndrome. Either way, it’s high time for him to feel some heat from the press and the public, instead of the fawning idolatry he’s been treated with up to now.

          • shivaskeeper

I agree. Like I said, he may think he is being a bulwark. That does not make it so though.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

And I’m not trying to be argumentative, btw. I always appreciate your viewpoints.

          • shivaskeeper

I welcome argumentative. It forces me to refine and clarify what I’m trying to say. Contrary just to be contrary is what I don’t welcome.

        Charlie Pierce nails it:

        Link: http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/a13054560/john-kelly-son-trump/

There’s always somebody willing to step up and push their soul to the middle of the table for him [ Rump ] to gamble with and, when he loses, because he always loses at the game of being human, he reneges on the bet because that’s what he always does. Of all the “generals,” Kelly always was the one closest to being a true Trumpian; his tenure at Homeland Security overseeing ICE showed that Kelly at least was sympatico with the president*’s Id-driven hardbar approach to immigration.

And now, by deploying the memory of his son, he’s given his inexcusable boss that boss’s most recent alibi for that boss’s most recent offense against human decency and the dignity of his office. There’s a great sadness in that.

Even before this, I formed the opinion that calling Kelly “one of the adults in the room” is a mistake.

    • IdRatherBeDancing

Yup. Kind of a poor man’s version of Colin Powell — remember him?

      • alwayspunkindrublic

Exactly. And according to his Chief of Staff, Lawrence Wilkerson, Powell acquiescing to be a prop and stooge for the Bush administration permanently tarnished an otherwise admirable reputation and legacy.

Yup. But Trump and his motley crew of grifters, racists and malcontents are rehabilitating the Bush 43 gang.

There is something that’s being missed in this whole conversation that nobody seems to have pointed out…

The squattter in the Oval Office who said, “this isn’t what I signed up for” tells a Gold Star mother, “he knew what he signed up for.”

Does anyone else see the raw irony there?

This country is slowly converting into a dictatorship. By the time 2018 is here, our votes will be symbolic only. And the justification for it will be that some of us are living comfortable lives so we should shut up and go along. Doubt it? Remember when everyone said the Russians couldn’t hack us and America wasn’t racist enough to elect trump?

    • nightmoth

I’m seriously worried. This country has never dealt with its history of enslaving Africans and killing and stealing from the indigenous population. We’re not unique in DOING those things. Human beings are human beings and every country has rotten stuff in its’ past. But many, (not all–looking at you, Turkey) many countries study their own inglorious histories with a not-jaundiced eye and learn from it. We don’t. We’re still hollering “We’re #1” and lying to ourselves. Countries rise and fall. Empires rise and fall. If things keep going the way they are right now, I think the USA will be a short chapter in a history book one day.

America continues waving their dicks around and hooting and hollering at Redskins games, and sending death threats to black athletes for not shutting up and dancing for their white paymasters.

Yup, we failed. At some point the history books will have to record that the US eventually lost WW2 because we celebrate fascism here.

Maybe this is a solution . . . and maybe it’s a band-aid; why not organize an effort in a few of these “mandatory ID” states like Wisconsin and others – and to reach out and provide assistance to those who don’t have IDs to get them in time for the mid-Terms and 2020? In some respects it would be very similar to GOTV efforts just accomplished earlier in the process – and it would effectively remove the impact of the barrier to voting. Beat ’em at their own game? Yeah, I know, they’ll come up with another ruse, but at least it’ll take ’em a few years to do it, and the Kochs, et al can’t live forever …

Good call, Ellie. What I remember from that era is “Life is cheap to THEM. They don’t mourn their dead like we do.” Also, re: not feeling pain—it was long the case in this country that doctors and scientists claimed black people did not feel pain like white people did.

FBI Director Wray: “… our integrity will be tested.”

Here’s wishing the FBI (and us) lots of fucking luck.
    – Staffed by a bunch of reactionary agents … who tended to think Trump was a good idea.
    – Agents colluded with the corpse of Rudy Giuliani, to pressure Comey and throw the election.
    – James Comey writes “Bad” letter, in hopes of heading off “Bad” actions by FBI agents, and saving the reputation of the FBI. Throws the election (per 538). All hail the FBI!
    – FBI fails to investigate the death of the Hatch Act. (It’s clearly a federal thing, goddammit!)
    – FBI flubs Bundy task; we get to watch all those shitkickers ride around some more. (Their horses’ backs do not thank us.)
    – FBI revives its J. Edgar push, to “monitor” those scary black people.

As extreme it this may seem, I’d argue that all the good that the FBI does … and I’m sure that’s a lot … doesn’t hold a candle to the damage done to our country by their complicity in creating DumbTrumpistan.

  • Lefty Wright

Sorry about the length of this, but I need to vent.

The link to the rat fucking the NC legislature had been up to is just the tip of the iceberg. Now, they want to change judicial elections. They previously changed the order judicial candidates were listed on ballots, putting the president of the state Senate’s son first on the appeals court ballot.

Now, they want to redistricting all the lower level judges and have overridden a veto of a bill cancelling judicial primaries for all levels in the court. Even though appeals and Supreme court seats are state wide elections. So the sole Republican up for re-election next year will most likely not see another Republican running, while several Democrats most likely will. Virtually assuring her the seat since they also lowered the percent of votes a candidate needs to win in an election with several candidates in order to prevent a run off election.

The legislature is also proposing that all judges be elected every two years instead of every eight years. That will take a constitutional amendment, though. It will also mean every judge will always be in campaign mode, potentially affecting every ruling. This also is on the heels of changing judicial elections from non-partisan to labeling party affiliation for candidates.

This is just the judicial tampering. There is a big stink between the elected Education Secretary (a young, tea partyish Republican with no real educational experience) and the appointed Board of Education (led by an old school Republican who was a member of the U.S. congress years ago). The legislature gave the new Secretary hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend any lawsuits against him, but passed a law forbidding the BOE from spending a dime defending against lawsuits. They also gave $700,000 for new staff for the Secretary, including a spot for a new propaganda specialist, while severely cutting funds for the BOE.

Just one last one, although I could go on. They cut funds for the attorney general’s office, previously held by the new Democratic governor and currently held by a Democrat, by up to 30%. Btw, they also cut positions and funds for the governor. The AG said those cuts meant some appeals may be shifted to elected county prosecutors. The legislature promptly passed a law saying the AG could not do that.

The GOP legislature has been blatantly partisan since they took over in 2011. Now, with them seeing a possible end in their veto proof majority in 2018, they shifted into overdrive this year. Including changing the composition of the state and county Boards of Elections, turning control from the governor to the legislature.

It’s quite a challenge to find the proper places for all that wunnerful fake news we hear about.

    • Opalescent Riddles

Oh, I used to be disgusted
And now I try to be amused
But since their wings have got rusted
You know, the angels want to wear my red shoes

Also sucky from this week: Tragically Hip frontman and humanitarian activist Gord Downie succumbed to brain cancer, and the GooTube and Twitbook non-comment sections were out in full force blasting Justin Trudeau with all kinds of homophobic slurs because he was overcome with emotion over the death of “our buddy Gord.” Completely anathema to Gord’s heartfelt mission and life’s work to spread kindness. But, Justin doesn’t give a shit about haters. He’s going to continue doing Gord’s work of Making Canada Great Again.

Another good thing from this week: Barry Bamz tied Justin for cutest emo world leader, as the public now gets to read his poetic breakup letters to a college girlfriend.

Also too, Harvey Swinestain lost another job, and is now facing a criminal investigation — and more and more women are feeling able to come forward to name their attackers and tear away at patriarchy and rape culture. So it wasn’t all bad.

If you didn’t see Lawrence O’Donnell last night, he took John Kelly to the woodshed and ripped him a new one. It was a thing of beauty, and clearly heartfelt by Lawrence:

My Trumpanzee neighbors are going to benefit from those tax cuts for the rich just as soon as they win big at the lottery.

Those meerkats don’t fool me. There are treats in those balls! They distract you with their so-called cuteness but all they really want is to take all the food.

Regarding the DNC, apparently diversity is only good when those chosen support St. Bernard of Our Lady of Perpetual Motion.

NPR must have misunderstood this whole charity thing: You don’t actually have to pay the money to charities (or gold star fathers), saying you have, or you will, is just as good.

The FBI’s new director, who took over the law enforcement agency after President Donald Trump fired its former chief, warned Thursday that officials at the FBI and across the federal government will face pressure to act unethically and need to resist it.

And I’m sure Director Wray will do everything in his power to look the other way.

He argued that this year’s elections are an existential moment that should — if Democrats do what he’s kept telling them to do, without much success — vote — be the start of reasserting an American politics and society that turns away from what’s embodied by President Donald Trump.

I’m sure it seemed clever to him.

With all this bad news I’m enjoying reading about Mr. Trump’s fake Renoir. There’s always good news if you now where to look for it!

Hey! I asked for more adorable videos 2 days ago and dammit, here are 2! And they are both sweet! We need all the sweetness and love to help fight the dark malaise of our sentence under Trump. THANK YOU Dominic!

A federal judge in Arizona denied former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s request to clear his record of his criminal conviction, Arpaio is currently throwing a tantrum.

    Fine.

“Go to prison. Go on. Piss off. Go to prison. Find the nearest prison, and go to it. Knock on the door and say I’ve sent you to prison, and you’re to stay there.”

Watch Megyn Kelly dance her way to failure as her ratings continue to plummet.

She dances like I make love. Awkwardly, painfully and without any rhythm at all.

  • Khavrinen

“Arpaio is currently throwing a tantrum.”

No wonder Trump likes him; they’re birds of a feather.
And as far as I’m concerned, they can go flock themselves.

  • alpacapunchbowl

Ugh, that WaPo article about the DNC is…discouraging.

Sorry – I’ve been away getting a couple of Picassos ready to sell to President Trump.

Watch it! The paint on that one isn’t quite dry!

I watched video of Obama’s speech in Virginia last night. I swear, his voice is like oxygen to me.
