In the wake of the Weinstein scandal, women across the internet have been calling attention to the prevalence of sexual assault and sexual harassment by posting “Me Too” on Facebook and Twitter. You have probably seen many of these posts!

While this certainly did draw attention to the magnitude of the problem (at least my whole feed was filled with “Me toos”) it has also drawn some criticism. From assholes.

Over on The_Donald — the Reddit home for the most, um, enthusiastic of Trump supporters (like this guy, u/Seattle4Truth aka Lane Maurice Davis — who posted on The_Donald and contributed to alt-right site The Ralph Retort — who stabbed his own father to death for being a “leftist”), one popular post, titled “Not Me,” is suggesting that all those dumb women tweeting “Me too” could have avoided their fate by merely carrying a gun. The post was so popular it was pinned at the top of the message board on Monday:

I’m sure many of you have watched your lefty friends posting “Me too” to virtue signal on social media about rape, or “that guy smiled at me that one time and he wasn’t attractive enough to do that.”
Well, we’re Trump Conservatives. We solve problems, we don’t virtue signal.
Forget “Me too.”
“Not me.”
If the Left wants to talk about guns, let’s talk about guns.
A 5’2″ 90lb woman doesn’t have much of a chance against a 6’4 240lb man, unless she has, as Samuel Colt put it, an equalizer.
Rather than virtue signalling, tell your friends, family, and those people you don’t actually know but are friends with, “Not me.”
Tell them that rapists exist, and as long as they exist, the only real way to stop them is to defend yourself. Take self defense classes. Get your CCW. Learn how to handle yourself.
Stand up against the pointless virtue signalling, and tell people how to really defend themselves.
The best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Yes, this person clearly has a very good idea of how sexual harassment and assault actually happen in real life! Clearly, if those women didn’t want to get sexually harassed or assaulted, they would have carried guns, and no women who carry guns are ever sexually harassed or assaulted because when somebody grabs them by the pussy, they can just pull out their Colt .45 and murder them! Right?

Also, dumping on Weinstein is just a strategic move by the Left, so we can be mean to poor Donald Trump about all his pussy grabbing:

This really shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Conservative women also experience sexual harassment and assault. Like Gretchen Carlson and all those other women at Fox News that Roger Ailes tried to rub his boner on. Probably a lot of them own guns! Somehow, that did not prevent Roger Ailes from trying to rub his boner on them. Maybe because there are other factors at work here?

However, this is less about guns and more about The_Donald combating any attempt to make them feel empathy for other people. If they can tell themselves. “Well, if those women had guns, then this wouldn’t have happened to them,” they can allow themselves to feel morally upright about not caring. This, indeed, is the whole logic behind why they get mad about so-called “virtue signaling.” They see the left as disingenuously trying to steal empathy from them, and they will not have it. Because if you manipulate them into feeling empathy for women who are victims of sexual assault or harassment, then you’ll then be able to trick them into feeling empathy for other people bad things have happened to. People like poor people, and unarmed black people shot by police, and DACA recipients! It’s a slippery slope! That’s how they get ya!

And that is why we can’t have nice things.

At least we haven’t heard what the MGTOWs are saying. I can only imagine it would be rage-inducing.

  • Gayer Than Thou

Dear Reddit morons – I am not trying to Segway into anything involving Twitler – I don’t like either one of those things.

    • Oblios_Cap

We almost lost GW Bush to one of those.

    • AJ Milne

I… Umm… Confess total ignorance of this meme/in joke, if that’s what it is…

But I think people probably shouldn’t Tweet while Segwaying, if that’s helpful…

(Jury out on whether they should Segway at all otherwise.)

      • Gayer Than Thou

Second screen grab says something about how leftists are trying to use Weinstein to “segway” into attacking Trump. As if I needed either Weinstein or a Segway to do that.

        • AJ Milne

          Pfft. That’s hilarious.

          (Always read the fine print.)

    • GoutMachine

I saw a woman in D.C. the other day on a Segway, and it occurred to me it was the first time I’ve ever seen a woman use one apart from those stupid Segway tours.

  • ManchuCandidate

On the intertubes we have a lot of guys complaining well shrieking that life isn’t fair because they can’t get laid or make rape babies. Then in the blink of an eye turn around and show by acting like ignorant hopeless dicks they are that life is actually fair.

  • Oblios_Cap

Is there no problem that can’t be solved with more guns and/or tax cuts?

    • Gayer Than Thou

If your boss won’t quit sexually harassing you and HR put the kibosh on your gun, maybe a tax cut will solve it!

  • peteywheats

“virtue signaling” is impossible for those with no virtues.

    • shivaskeeper

Which is why it’s supposed to be an insult.

  • arglebargle

Maybe they should rethink their strategy of giving women the green light to pump a few rounds into any guy that pinches their butt. On second thought, let’s go with that.

    • C4TWOMAN

I was going to say, have they thought this through?

      • Gayer Than Thou

Right? Are they thinking that they personally are not going to get shot in an elevator somewhere?

      • GoutMachine

        HA HA HA – “thought.”

        Snicker.

  • Last I checked the punishment for sexual harassment wasn’t death.

    • WotsAllThisThen

How about instead of a gun, women just carry portable nut kicking machines?

      • TakingAmes

I like this plan. Much better than the old plan.

    • Ill-Advised

Worth noting: the punishment for surviving rape includes nightmares, PTSD, suicidal thoughts, and the ongoing horror of the memory, triggering, and a host of other ruinous side effects.

Assuming you don’t stroke out from sky high blood pressure and trauma, or get killed anyway.

I am neither joking nor hyberbolizing.

There’s another reply below that bears reading from another survivor.

  • Wild Cat

OK, we can’t use an intelligence test to give driver’s licenses out because we’d have no cabbies, but can’t we give some sort of test to determine if you should be on an electronic public forum that’s available worldwide?

    • Swampgas_Man

Hell, we can’t even give an IQ test for guns!

Like “Florida Man (did something stupid)”?

  • OneWhiteWhisker

I have been sexually harassed and sexually assaulted. The first was by an employer and the second by someone I thought was a friend. Guess I should’ve been packing 24-7 and just blown the fuckers away.

    • Fight back! Strangle em with your bootstraps!

    • Historicat

No, if you blew away the employer you wouldn’t have been in a position to have experienced the harassment/assault from the “friend” since you would have been in prison. Obviously a win/win!

  • Errr, I am the kind of angry man-hating feminazi that keeps these choads up at night, and even I think that blowing someone’s head off because they grab your butt or whatever is a tad extreme. But hey, it allows them to keep the onus for ending sex slimers on women, instead of acknowledging that men have to change a single iota. Bonus: If/when that actually happens and women go to prison for manslaughter, it enforces how Women Are Always Wrong! Get sex slimed: YOUR FAULT, WOMEN. SHOULD HAVE CARRIED A GUN. Shoot a creep who sex slimes you: YOUR FAULT WOMEN. SHOULDN’T HAVE OVER-REACTED. Win-win for asshole dudes!

    • Dept. of Space Tacos

they tried to send a florida woman to prison for like 12 years after she fired her revolver into the cieling when her abusive husband was about to attack her.

This was soon after the Trayvon Martin murder. I think they tried her twice…

      • Dept. of Space Tacos

i should have said after the not guilty verdict int he Trayvon Martin murder.

        My bad.

      • Beanz&Berryz

I remember that… trying not to shoot someone being prosecuted more severely than actually shooting someone… Ugh…

      • I remember that. He broke into her house in violation of a restraining order, but hey, she was Black, whaddya want? Stand Your Ground (Unless You’re Brown)

        • Dept. of Space Tacos

yup and open carry everywhere is great, except for when the black panthers do it.

And concealed carry shouldn’t be infringed, unless it’s Philando Castile and his black skin.

Ironically same State attorney (Angela Corey) prosecuted Zimmerman (special appointment by Rick Scott) and Marissa Alexander (the woman who shot through the ceiling) (in Jacksonville, FL). Alexander got a new trial and there was plea agreement.

They claim all of those are fake and will even try and make shit up about Hillary to deflect.

      • Swampgas_Man

What, now they’re saying HILLARY raped women?

        • jesterpunk

They where claiming before the election that Hillary sexually harassed them.

  • ArgieBargie

What in the actual fuck does “virtue signal” even mean?

    • Thiazin Red

Its one of those projection things. They lack normal human empathy, and they assume everyone else does too. So when someone expresses concern or anger over a social problem, they assume that person is just lying to make themselves look better.

      • shivaskeeper

Also to to get into the panties by showing off how virtuous you are.

      • ArgieBargie

Sounds deeply stupid and intellectually lazy.

In other words, it only makes sense they are using such term.

      • NoniMausa

When laid out that way, it is weirdly contradictory. If they believe that everyone else lax human empathy, then why would they want to convince anybody else that they had human empathy? Why would they think that human empathy was even a thing? Who exactly would they be trying to impress? Maybe only the female gazelles who have a suspicion that the empathic person talking to them might actually be a lion? I suppose it makes sense in a prey/predator viewpoint. So, then the predatory guys who label other men as virtue signallers are scolding them for being sneaky, and not being outright honest predators like themselves.

        • Rocket Pony Ron

They see EVERYTHING in terms of predator/prey relationships.

    • Asterix

Thanks for asking – I had no idea what this was.

    • shivaskeeper

Virtue signalling, like being a SJW is one of their insults. The words mean what they want them to mean. Do you really want to understand their definitions of things?

But virtue signalling boils down to anytime you express sympathy for anything as a man, you are only doing it to show off and get into a woman’s pants by showing that you to can feel her pain about something. Also you are probably lying about it and a SJW on top of it.

I warned you they are idiots and morans.

      • theblackdog

Nailed it. I was just looking it up to be sure when you posted.

      • Oblios_Cap

Wowsers! I can see how that would get some assholes’ danders up.

        • shivaskeeper

My understanding is this, and Robyn or someone else who goes deeper into the derp than I do can correct me:

It’s all about getting laid, ultimately. By virtue signalling my sympathy/empathy, I am am not only lying about feeling it, but I am using it as an unfair advantage to getting laid. Basically I am poaching all the willing women from them by pretending I am an actual human being with emotions and everything.

          • YoBunnyBunny

And also too–women are too vapid and stupid to know when their being conned because they only go after men who superficially demonstrate that they have money/fame/thundercocks and apparently virtues now.

          • shivaskeeper

Of course. I forget that the assumptions need to be stated up front sometimes. Good catch.

          • Oblios_Cap

Or hopefully NOT backfire, cuz that’s painful.

Also, how is admitting you were assaulted or harassed “virtue signaling” in any way?

    • Roadstergal

No, don’t wave your gun, shoot them outright. It’ll all turn out great.

But when presented with a case like that, there will always be another excuse. Why did a woman dare to be alone outside without a male escort? Was she wearing anything fitted or showing an inch of skin? Has she ever in her life so much as smiled at a man before?

And thats even before we get to the well it wasn’t really that bad, he was a promising young man and we don’t want to ruin his future do we stage.

This is why you don’t let women drive. They’re going to go all over the realm without a male relative who will fight to the death to preserve the family’s honor.

When I was 16 and took a commuter train to school, one time a businessman type sitting next to me started surreptitiously tickling my thigh. At first I couldn’t even figure out what was happening. Once I did, I was too bewildered to be frightened or angry. I just got up and changed seats.

    So, me too, I guess?

    • Wild Cat

It’s YOUR fault. You should have driven to school in your Corvette.

What were you wearing, Joe? ‘Fess up now, it was revealing, wasn’t it?

      • Joe Beese

That’s the thing. Even back then when I was skinny and had hair, I was by no means a hot number. Not even a lukewarm number. More like a yogurt-that’s-been-left-out-of-the-fridge-for-half-an-hour number.

Either this guy had a very particular type and I just happened to be it, or he was in the practice of casting an extremely wide net.

Or maybe wasn’t even about sex at all?

Generally speaking, man or woman, carrying a gun into a business meeting is considered a clear sign of being a poor business partner. So is sexually harassing or hitting on a meeting attendee.

      Except in Texas.

  • If they’d thought this through… and I know, it requires functioning brains which are not in evidence – they’d realize that if women were armed and shooting sexual harassers, the Trump Reddit thread would be … non-existent.

A gun doesn’t do much in an office setting, unless one is really into shooting sprees.

    • Beanz&Berryz

I wonder how many offices and office walls a 9mm bullet would pass through before running out of gas… or hitting someone…

      • OutOfOrbit

So hanging out by the water cooler would be more like antelope at the watering hole.

  • Jennaratrix

Right, because aside from the obvious issue of telling women how to defend themselves against sexual assault instead of telling men not to do it, no woman is EVER going to get in some sort of trouble for shooting her rapist, because everyone always believes women when we tell people we’ve been assaulted. Rape, sexual assault and harassment are part of almost every woman’s life from cradle to grave. Is the genius suggesting we teach baby girls how to hold guns before we teach them how to hold bottles? How about aphasic stroke patients in nursing homes? How do we arm them? And obviously women can’t work at jobs like….bar tending. If I shot every sexual harasser during my time at those jobs, I’d have spent my entire salary on bullets.

Now, this particular station happens to be in a heavily-trafficked and very touristy area. I’m sure that if I had even had time to whip out my hypothetical pistol, and proceeded to shoot the guy, yeah, that would have gone over real well.

          • janecita

They had a daughter together, her name is Dylan Farrow.

She wrote about it as well.

          • janecita

            I didn’t know that part.

          • covfefesumgame0005

from what I read back then, she was an adoptive daughter of his. in any case she (Mia) seemed to be trying to do the same crap as was done to the people who ran that daycare center back in the 80’s when a crooked local DA claimed they did “Satanic” rituals and killed children and tortured them in an non-existent basement/warren of tunnels (al la Pizzagate). that was my impression of her anyway.

          • janecita

She seems like a total wackjob.

          • alpacapunchbowl

I’m not sure how you drew a parallel between this situation and the satanic panic of the 80s?
Woody was grooming Soon-Yi from the time she was very young, which is classic predator behavior. Even if he didn’t rape her, he’s the creep. Not Mia.

          • covfefesumgame0005

sounded more to me that she coached her to say all that

          • alpacapunchbowl

            Mia coached…who? Soon-Yi, or Dylan?
If you’re talking about Dylan, I’ve read that letter she wrote and it didn’t seem coached to me. Similar to other stories I’ve heard from other survivors of sexual trauma at the hands of family members or close friends? Absolutely.
Add to that the statements he made defending Harvey Weinstein (which he now says is not what he was doing)?
I’m not saying Mia’s a saint or that she doesn’t have a beef with her ex, but that’s no reason to disbelieve Dylan’s story. At least not in my book.

          • covfefesumgame0005

I would say Dylan. why would you think she coached his wife? are you just being argumentative to be argumentative?

          • alpacapunchbowl

No, I’m trying to figure out what the fuck you’re on about.
Your response to a comment I made that *only* mentioned Soon-Yi was, quote, “sounded more to me that she coached her to say all that”.
You don’t believe Dylan. Got it. I don’t know if you’re a big Woody Allen fan or what the deal is, but I think your insistence on defending him is fucking weird. But it’s your opinion.
My opinion is that he’s a disgusting predatory creep, and with that I’ve said my peace on the matter. Bye.

          • covfefesumgame0005

          • alpacapunchbowl

I don’t know what your experience was, but I’m very sorry that you suffered. I’m not just blowing smoke up your ass, I truly am.
Having been there myself, I know how agonizing it is to think that what’s happening to you is your fault. And then when you do finally tell someone, you have to try to describe things that you don’t even understand. And you have to repeat it over and over even though you don’t want to think about it and you start regretting that you said anything because all this retelling hurts nearly as much and you feel ashamed both that it happened and that you’re now “causing trouble” for everyone. Some people believed me, a lot of people didn’t. Even some of the people who did believe me blamed me (and made sure to tell me so) when the perpetrator actually did face consequences (I was lucky in that respect).
I was seven. No one coached me.
I guess I lied when I said earlier that I had said my peace. But I have now, and I am done with this fucking conversation.

          • Bemused

I don’t know if you realize, but this is what you’ve just said, “It’s OK that Woody married Soon Yi, even if he was her father figure figure since she was a small child. And we can’t believe Dylan because bitches be crazy.” Seriously, that is not OK. None of that is OK.

          • covfefesumgame0005

according to both of them he was never a “father figure” to Soon-Yi, who seems to have been adopted by Mia simply to be a baby-sitter for her real kids…

          • Bemused

Jim Bob started dating Cathy when Cathy’s daughter, Julie, was 9. Jim Bob adopts a couple of Cathy’s kids and has a child with Cathy. Some time when Julie was a latish teen, maybe 17 or 18, Jim Bob starts sleeping with Julie. Would that be OK? No, of course it wouldn’t.

It’s not OK if it’s Woody Allen either.

          • covfefesumgame0005

um, Mia and Woody never married, just really working off old reports and the wiki page, but none of what you posted applies or is relevant (hypotheticals hardly ever are, keep that in mind when making shit up next time). I know what Mia claimed, only after Woody dumped her, yes he is a cad but he does not seem to have actually abused anyone. if you have a different opinion that is fine with me, but stop pretending you have anything except an opinion.

          • Bemused

Did I say that Jim Bob and Cathy were married? No, no I did not. If you take Jim Bob and replace it with Woody, Cathy and replace it with Mia and Julie and replace it with Soon Yi, it is EXACTLY their situation. It does not depend on what Mia did or did not say at all, but is a description of the observable facts. You can feel free to believe that it’s OK that he slept with the teenage daughter of his girlfriend who was also the mother of his child, but it is not. If a high-school senior came and told me that her mother’s boyfriend was having sex with her, I would probably have to report it.

          • covfefesumgame0005

Soon-yi is not and never was his adoptive daughter, as to Dylan, well there is a lot of dispute on both sides.

          • Digitus Impudicus

Wikipedia disagrees with you on Soon-Yi.

          • covfefesumgame0005

you mean this? why do you feel the need to ie?

Soon-Yi Previn is the adopted daughter of Farrow and her former husband, composer André Previn; she is now Allen’s wife. Previn was born in Korea and was abandoned in the slums of Seoul. Farrow and Previn adopted her in 1978, at which time a bone scan determined she was between five and seven years old.[156][157]

          • covfefesumgame0005

nope, it is a lie, you were so eager to “prove” your case you pushed and pushed and then you came across something that you could fit in as an accusation and promptly posted it because you have already made up your mind and nothing will penetrate enough to allow you to change it.

          • Digitus Impudicus

Rotate that tongue, boy. Deeper, deeper.
When you’ve cleaned my *, you can start in on Woody Allen’s.

Mebbe, these peoples should recommend that teh menz should just shoot themselves when they get the urge to assault someone.

    • Persistent Tennessee Rain

They don’t see it as assault. They see it as one of the perks of their position.

  • Daniel

    Next on Fox News:

Bill O’Reilly, Roger Ailes and Eric Bolling all recovering in hospital having been shot for some reason probably to do with feminism.

    • JohnBull

In which case it was probably an illegal and we need a wall.

  • Werewolf

I suppose I should’ve drawn down on the youth advisor who patted my butt and said “Nice tuchus!” when she found me alone in a hallway. Of course, it’s kinda hard to get a concealed carry permit when you’re fifteen.

    • Roadstergal

“Of course, it’s kinda hard to get a concealed carry permit when you’re fifteen.”

      Depends on the state.

      • Werewolf

In the late Seventies, even in Floriduh that would’ve been a stretch.

    • CindyinEncinitas

See there’s the rub: sexual harassment isn’t about sex, it’s about power and the harasser picks the target based on the target’s lack of power due to age or size or other physical attributes. If your mom won’t let you put a gun in your lunch pail, the argument sort of falls apart.

      • Werewolf

        Exactly.

  • janecita

It would have to go on a murder spree, if I were to shoot all the teachers/coworkers/superiors, that have sexually harassed me through the years.

    • Persistent Tennessee Rain

OMG, yes. The most vulnerable years seem to be from around age 6 to 45. One of the perks of being an oldz now is that I no longer am subjected to that shit.

      • Shanzgood

Started for me at 4. Stilll hasn’t stopped and I’m already getting offers from AARP.

        • Daniel

          AARP?

American Association of Retired Persons. It’s a lobbying organization for Seniors and people nearing retirement age.

          • Daniel

            Ah, thank you.

ETA: Frankly I’m surprised they’d still be propositioning people then, but I have been led to understand older people are naturally more polite than we youngers.

          • Shanzgood

I’m less inclined to take that shit these days. The last guy who harassed me got an earful.

          • Daniel

            Good.

        • Royal Ugly Globalist Dude

WTF, AARP? I just got my card in the mail, and I’m not 50 yet! I’m still paying off student loans, dammmit.

The men and women that seem a little afraid of me, and especially the men that wonder why I’m not “Smiling” when I’m out really should read a little about life, and reflect on these issues, but who the fuck am I kidding, right?

  • Persistent Tennessee Rain

You could drive a small country between, “He wasn’t good looking enough to smile at me” and “rape.” Dumb fuck being a dumb fucker. I’ll feign surprise.

    • CindyinEncinitas

      Ok.

  • TundraGrifter

The world could be a much better place if more people actually understood the important difference between “empathy” and “sympathy.” Neat thing about English – very, very seldom do two words have the identical meaning (unless they are made up like “irregardless” when “regardless” was already there ready to use) even if they kinda sorta sound a little alike. Sec. Clinton got slammed by the mouth-breathing Regressives for suggesting we needed empathy for terrorists. Despite the fact that makes a great deal of sense.

    • Roadstergal

Yeah, if you want to effectively stop someone, you kinda need to understand where they’re coming from. It’s not her fault that they can’t speak English.

  • Anna Elizabeth

I have talked to and known enough of the Gun-guys, the Tacticool Mall Ninjas with hot-and-cold running water on their Bushmaster Assault Rifle, to know that they each think they are John McLane just arriving at the Xmas party, or even Max Rockatansky right before Toecutter’s gang hits town, and they are *Ready* dammit, to be the Hero of their Own Action Epic.

They are simultaneously afraid of *everything* and yet itching for the chaos to begin.

    • Ling Ling

      And fabulously successful IRL, right?

      • Anna Elizabeth

        Indeed. *shakes head*

Mine too. When you see ‘interceptor’ in the nightrider chase scene, you know it’s over

          • Anna Elizabeth

Yiss! That film is so amazingly shot and edited, a triumph of small-budget.

I so wanted a model kit of the Falcon XR Interceptor, but the only one available was a resin cast from the UK. $100 is too much for a model car in 1/24 scale.

    • Daniel

Do you remember that problem y’all had with that black chap in the White House?

Well, Trump is pretty skilled of evicting black families from their homes.

Again, what kind of an asshole looks at tales of abuse and goes “but what about my feelings?”

    • thewalkindude

The one at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

    • BadKitty904

      A Republican.

    • Shanzgood

Lots of them. Even liberals pile on the #notallmen bandwagon because the pervasiveness of the problem is so overwhelming and it makes them…uncomfortable. Which is way more important a feeling than, oh, being actually physically violated.

      • Bemused

This. Every teenage or adult male person in the entire US has been involved in a conversation that degrades women in some fashion and almost every male in the US has at least on friend who has made a “hard pass” or grabbed a women when she doesn’t want to be grabbed. Most people don’t want deal with that “I shoulda said something” moment so they have to make it so that they didn’t really need to say something.

        • Shanzgood

Some of the men I know are really wonderful. My bestie has really done a lot of hard work over the years and it brings me hope to see that.

I also love it that my son is very aware of boundaries. He’s told me about times he’s been with dates or friends and has said flat out “If I do anything that makes you uncomfortable, tell me and I’ll stop right away.” Sadly, this is partly because pretty much all the young women he knows have been through some sort of sexual trauma. But at least he knows because they TALK about it now.

Years ago, he mentioned a time when he was out and several girls came up to him and started complimenting him on his jewelry, right up in his space, touching it and everything. He’s 6’4″ and over 200lbs and that made HIM uncomfortable. So he gets it.

          • Bemused

Some certainly are, but those aren’t the ones that are part of the most that don’t want to think about what they should have done too hard.

It sounds like you have a great son.

          • Shanzgood

He is, in that regard. Still can be annoying and entitled as hell sometimes. Maturity will come in the latter cases, I’m sure.

    • Marion in Savannah

You bet your ass. If it’s not your boss, it’s your mother’s boss, or your teacher, or your gym coach, or…

      • Persistent Tennessee Rain

I don’t want to go into too much detail, but in some ways, I blame my mother because she didn’t teach me to look someone in the eye and say, “fuck off, asshole.” So, she created a perpetual victim.

        • Shanzgood

          But who taught HER that?

          • Persistent Tennessee Rain

There is no defense for my mother’s behavior. She watched as a man molested me in a community swimming pool. Oh sure, she may not have seen exactly what he was doing, but she sure saw that he was up on me in the pool for a very long time. She didn’t want to make waves. Now, if someone had done that to my daughter, I’d have been in his face screaming, “what in the fuck do you think you’re doing to my kid?” And I would have called the police. Maybe before or maybe after I wrested his nuts from his groin.

          • Shanzgood

I’m truly sorry that happened to you. And that your mother was too afraid to “make waves” by protecting you. I’m in no way trying to justify her lack of action, but that’s exactly what we’ve been trained by our culture to do. Our safety has long been considered less important than doing what it takes to stop the abuse. I can’t tell you the number of times I stayed silent on my own behalf. But, like you, I’d raise holy hell if it were one of my own kids.

          • Persistent Tennessee Rain

And, I’m sure you taught your kids to speak up if something did happen. So, the cycle can be broken.

          • Shanzgood

Yes, it can. One of the best things I heard early on was to teach even close relatives to ASK kids for hugs and kisses, and to teach your very young children that it’s ok to tell ANYONE no at any time. Even grandmas. My 16yo daughter still asks ME if she can have a hug.

          • ahughes798

I did not know you had a daughter! You don’t look old enough to even have a daughter! Molotov!

          • Shanzgood

Haha! Thank you! I have a 16yo daughter and a son who will be 21 in a couple of months.

          • ahughes798

Well, Molotov again! In your pic you look like you’re less than 30!

          • Shanzgood

Well, I dye me hair. Otherwise it would probably all be white by now.

          • ahughes798

Teenagers will do that to you. My friends with adult kids now all started going grey when those kids were teens.

          • Shanzgood

Mine started when I had my daughter.

          • ahughes798

I know mine would be straight up grey if I had kids. You’re almost never not worried about them in some way. Or at least I’d worry all the time. I’m a worrier!

        • Marion in Savannah

My mother didn’t either. I guess I was a victim for years, but then I hit my late 20s and decided NO. NO, NO, NO. It didn’t make any of them stop trying, but I did learn how to evade/repel. Hang in there — you’re NOT a perpetual victim.

    • Bitter Scribe

And she was 13 when the abuse started. In the exam room of the team doctor. Should she, at 13, have carried a pistol in there?

      • Persistent Tennessee Rain

She should have carried another adult. Obviously, that wasn’t her responsibility to do so, but it should have been someone’s.

        • Bitter Scribe

I dunno…people tend to trust doctors. It’s not like the guy had “PERV” tattooed on his forehead.

          • Persistent Tennessee Rain

I guess I just have a different mindset. I don’t believe a man should ever be alone in a room with a young man or woman and not because I think every man is a molester. I don’t allow my daughters to work on solo choreography without someone else present (mostly me). But, it’s not because I’m an over protective parent. It’s for the man’s protection as well. If there is a third party in the room, it protects the man from being falsely accused.

A beloved teacher at my daughter’s school was fired at the end of last year because a female student accused him of being inappropriate. My daughter swears that it couldn’t possibly be true and sobbed for days over his firing. But, the truth is, he was alone with that student in his classroom, so there are no witnesses. He may be innocent, but he was stupid.

          • Bitter Scribe

            Yeah, you have a point.

One more reason to hate the world we live in. As if we needed one.

          • TakingAmes

Hell, when I use an underage babysitter for my kids, I am texting their parent about scheduling and when they should expect their kid home. It’s for everyone’s protection.

        • randomhookup

If I remember correctly, some of the previously reported assaults include another adult being in the room and not realizing the assault was happening.

      • Meccalopolis

    • btwbfdimho

Exactly, there is an attack on Hollywood because it’s mostly liberal and jewish, but it’s a pervasive corporate-power issue: Silicon Valley, Uber, finance, Washington (“Hollywood For Ugly People”)…
Except the construction industry, that employs mostly a male-indocumentado labor force.

  • Notreelyhelping

Y’know, most people stop offering “but if I had a gun…” as a practical solution around age 15, if not earlier.

  • Panika MCD

I’m more concerned that they think this is about random ugly dudes smiling at us and that people would not smile at you if you are carrying a gun. something tells me the gun enthusiasts who think walking around with assault style weapons and grinning like goofballs to “look approachable” should visit their sympathizers!

  • theblackdog

This completely falls apart because most victims are assaulted by someone they know and it’s possible there would not be a gun nearby. Hell, if their logic came to fruition I suspect a lot of the aggressors would get their hands on the gun first and force their victims to comply.

    • Meccalopolis

most people, male or female, will shoot the wrong person, shoot themselves or have the gun taken away and used on them

  • SecludedCompound

        • Hardly Ideal

Yeah, fucking losers. For fuck’s sake, I’m an insecure white male who doesn’t quite operate optimally in the real world, but at least I take it out on pretend skeletons instead of random women on Twitter.

“the victim, 17 year old Josh Duggar, was said to be a good, honest boy who followed his family’s Christian faith passionately. Mike Huckabee, a friend of the family, has spoken about his horror at the incident explaining in something experts describe as bearing a resemblance to a joke that he has no idea why it happened but it was almost certainly due to the Democrats. He was so traumatized by the incident that his usual brilliant wordplay was rendered puzzling and obscure, as his usual sparkling wit became dull and leaden.”

  • Bitter Scribe

So, saying you’ve been raped or harassed is “virtue signaling”?

Meaning what? Not wanting to have been raped is a “virtue”? And you’re “signaling” what, exactly? That you’re the kind of woman who doesn’t want to be raped?

I guess that makes some kind of sense, if you’re a guy who thinks all women secretly want to be raped, with a few “virtuous” exceptions.

Really. That’s the best I got. Anyone else want to take a shot (hah) at unpacking these semiotics?

    • Captain Kraut

Well, there is that. I think about 60% of people marrying in Germany first met at work.
But there is of course quite a difference between sexual harassment in the workplace and getting to know and appreciate each other in the same environment, but that’ll likely go over their little masculinist heads again.

I worked as a draftsman (drafter? draftsperson?) at a civil engineering firm, making standardized maps of flood zones for a federal contract. This was the era of miniskirts, and the drafting tables were so large that if one was short (I was 5′ at the time) the only way to work was standing at the table and leaning over it. Our supervisor was Larry the Troll (greasy grey hair, earlobes so long they almost touched his shoulders), and he was always leering at the young women among us, myself included. I wasn’t thinking of this when I posted Me, Too, but it counts. I did accept a date from a hot coworker. He was ridiculously cute.

          It works just FINE!

  • ziggywiggy

Yes that’s what I should have done when I was 12, shoot my grandfather, of course why didn’t I think of that? Fuck those dumbass reddit subhumans.

    • PJ

I would have had to shoot my grandfather when I was 5. In my sleep.

  • Don Hamel

    “segway”? sigh…

Not the first time I’ve seen that recently :-/ #murikin_edjimicashuns

  • Resistance Fighter Callyson

I *almost* didn’t post my story on #MeToo (I’m fine, thanks for asking), but not I am glad I did. Fuck.

    • LeftyProud

      Sorry for your story.

    • Shanzgood

I didn’t feel like making any of mine public, either. There’s one I’ve told here but it was fairly generic, if that’s the right word.

I kind of hate it that we feel like we have to dredge up all kinds of private pain, en masse, for public consumption before we’re believed.

      *offers hug*

      • PJ

“I wish women didn’t have to rip our pasts open & show you everything & let you ogle our pain for you to believe us.” -Lindy West

        • Shanzgood

          Yes, that.

    • alpacapunchbowl

I didn’t get into details because it’s no one’s business. Plus, if I talked about every single instance it’d be the length of a novella. But I sure as shit wasn’t going to be silent and not acknowledge that yes, me too. Me, and every other woman in the world.

      • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Ive never been raped, but I have had harassing stalkers ( co-workers and neighbors and even strangers)

        • alpacapunchbowl

Yes! And even the fact that you, like most women, use the qualifier “I wasn’t raped, but…” says SO much about how we’re taught, implicitly and explicitly, to internalize and downplay our experiences. That it wasn’t that big of a deal, it was all in our heads, etc etc.
I have been raped, unfortunately, but the “smaller”, perhaps less physical, perhaps physical but not quite so extreme, the everyday bullshit, ALL of that shit is just as harmful.

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

I’ve always thought I would mentally fall apart if I ever got raped. I’m such an independent person, that I think it would crush me. I read an article years ago about a woman who had been raped, and she started to unravel, but then she started to see a therapist who was giving her Ectasy as part of her treatment. I could see how Ecstasy would be very useful in treating trauma, but of course we can’t have nice things, because of Puritanism.

Ps- I’m sorry that happened to you, and to everyone else it’s happened to.

          • alpacapunchbowl

You wouldn’t. Mentally fall apart is what I mean. As long as you don’t shut out the people who love you and want to be there for you. It’s the height of bullshit that it’s such situations that most help us realize just how strong we are.
And thank you. I’m sorry that you’ve had to live with all that day-to-day insidious crap. And I’m sorry that this is still considered the “norm” that girls and women should expect everywhere around the world.

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

What’s even scarier is that as American women we have it better than most of the women in the world. I don’t know how women in Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan get out of bed in the morning.

          • alpacapunchbowl

They get out of bed every morning because they have to. They’ve got shit to do. Just like we do.

    • TakingAmes

I posted “Me too” on Facebook, but didn’t elaborate, since it’s no one’s business. No one asked me to.

    • Hardly Ideal

It’s all fun and games until the murder conviction.

  • Daniel Hooper

It shows how little these idiots know about guns as well as showcasing their lack of respect for women. Do you think they’ll be able to recognize the threat, pull their weapon, and get off a clean shot before the attacker is on top of them? And good news; now that a gun’s been introduced, her situation is about to get exponentially worse if she loses control of it. And can she even handle the recoil of a Colt 45 if she’s under a 100 pounds?!

Fuck these guys, is what I’m saying.

    • Hardly Ideal

I’ve even seen a few concealed carry dudes saying right off the bat that even if you’re 1,000% in the right when using a gun in such mythical cases, it will fuck up your life. You’ll have changed or ended the attacker’s life. You’ll have to defend your use not just to the authorities, but to pretty much everyone else in your life. It’s pretty much a traumatic event, like the kind you measure your life in years before and after, no matter how you slice it.

      • Nasty Girl Brianna

No no, a gun is the solution to EVERYTHING, donchaknow.

    • Betty Eyer

Most stranger rapes start with the women being struck from behind and then thrown to the ground. Brazillian jui jitsu is probably a better idea than a gun if you want to go that route.

    • Zyxomma

Not to mention that a large male (or males, gang rape at gunpoint was one of my #MeToo experiences and it’s still a thing) could probably wrest that gun away from said < 100 lb. woman, and then there's an ARMED rapist on the loose.

  • Catstro

I’ve been lucky enough so far to not have been physically assaulted, and while the street harassment I’ve received has made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe, I don’t think pulling a gun on a man for telling me that his nuts are sore is a reasonable solution. Although it would have been kind of satisfying to pull one on the man who flashed me while we were on a brewery tour. But not reasonable.

    • TakingAmes

This. I’ve been groped while attempting to leave a bar with my friends, and literally chased around a dorm room by my friend’s asshole roommate who had his dick hanging out of his pants. In neither case was a gun the appropriate response. Satisfying, yes, but so would kneeing them in the balls (which I also didn’t do), and much less lethal.

      • Nasty Girl Brianna

I think a pair of garden shears would have been a suitable response. Turnabout is fair play, and all.

      • SalisburyWitch

I was groped going up a crowded staircase in a high school. A gun wouldn’t have been appropriate, and would have hurt innocent people. On the plus side, I would have loved to have seen his face because I had just started my period and was heading to get another pad to change. lol

  • PixieThis

I have to ask, what would 5 or 12 year old me have been doing with a gun? Even 19 year old me (which was the most physically violent of my experiences). Or when a partner at a law firm where I worked when I was in my early 20s grabbed the pixie twins, should I have had a gun?

    • SqueakyRat

Sure. You could have shot him in the head and spent your life in prison. Ain’t freedom great?

      • SalisburyWitch

or shot him in the d*ck where he wouldn’t be hurt because there isn’t a pain in that brain.

        • SqueakyRat

          Not quite getting that, Witch.

  • whitroth

Robyn, you leftist weak-o! Don’t you know you should be carrying your six shooter in your holster at ALL TIMES, including when you go to the bathroom, and when you go to bed. Look, suppose you were in the kitchen, trying to think what to make for dinner, and a rabbit hopped by outside the window. You could make like Queecksdraw McGraw, and shoot that bunny, and *voily* hassenfeffer for dinner! See? (While you’re shooting bunnies, please, shoot some of the damn rabbits on my block….)

  • WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot

Even though I have never seen these assholes admit that MEN are responsible for rape, I garauntee that the first time a man is killed for attempted rape the reddidiots will start a rapists lives matter movement.

  • Eileen Besse

The fist “Me too” I saw was on the Book of Face, from my oldest best friend–still in touch since kindergarten….

  • HazooToo

So what they’re saying is that due process no longer matters when anyone is accused of rape or sexual harassment, and that women can now freely kill any man who starts with them? NO? I assume selling loose cigarettes, playing with toy guns, and failing to signal a turn are still crimes punishable by immediate death without trial, though…

  • Iam Reading

If men didn’t sexual harass and rape women, women wouldn’t need guns to prevent harrasentry and rape

My fellow men, this is an easy problem to solve. Stop harassing, stop raping, and teach the same to your boys.

    • redblack

while i agree with your sentiments, i have to disagree with your conclusion. this goes waaaay beyond “don’t touch! hot!” it’s not just about teaching boys and men that rape and harassment are wrong.

      that’s just the surface.

it’s a matter of respecting people who aren’t your mother or sister as equal human beings.

  • anon_the_great

    • redblack

upvoted for the lebowski reference, but please don’t resort to drastic measures simply because of the knuckle-draggers.

  • Betty Eyer

This gun solution ignores the following scenarios among others:
    you’re 8 years old
the person is your uncle and you didn’t strap on your gun for Thanksgiving Dinner, so there was nothing you could do when he pushed you into the basement where no one would hear you.
You work in a restaurant and your boss pushes you into the refrigerator room and puts his hands under your shirt and sticks his tongue down your throat. Your gun is in your purse in your locker.
You are having consensual sex with a new lover. Everything is fine and then the guy decides to beat and sodomize you. Your gun is out of reach cause you did not have any idea his tastes ran towards the criminal.

And the whole idea is a smug attempt to contain a problem so that you don’t need to either be afraid or be sympathetic to the victims. It buys into the idea that only stranger danger is rape. It ignores pedophilia and statutory rape, incest, marital rape, etc.

  • Betty Eyer

This woman was in sketchy neighborhood after work hours, had her car booted and some guy in the parking deck trying to be helpful would not leave her alone when she asked. She pulled a gun on him. Guess who got arrested? I have yet to talk to a woman in town who thinks this is reasonable. No article has stated his race, but my hunch is he’s white.

So. As a victim here. Dear America, can we please move past rape apology and rape justification? If I have one more person, just one, tell me that I somehow did something wrong to “earn” the years of intimate partner rape I’ve endured (you know, that special kind of rape that extra double special doesn’t exist) I think I will loose my fucking mind.

Dear America; I know you got mother’s right? And daughters and sisters and brothers and sons (cause men get raped too, SURPRISE!! Even though it will always be primarily a womens issue) I know you may in fact have ovaries yourself. That YOU America! YES!! YOU!! may have been or will be a rape survivor! So can we maybe try to be a little more human on this? Or do you hate us because of what we represent? Do you hate us because you can’t stand the idea of something so terrible being out of a womans control? Do you maybe hate us because you’re terrified you or someone to you love may be us one day?

Just a question America just a question

    • whitroth

No, you didn’t fucking “ask for it”. No, you didn’t “earn” it. You sure as hell didn’t “deserver it”.The shit who did it to you ought to be in jail, if there was any justice.

I swear, if anyone ever said “she was asking for it” in my presence, I might do something I’ve never done, and beat them to a pulp…because, of course, they were just “asking for it”.

Other than this small moral support, dunno what else I can do.

      • Invidosa

It’s appreciated :) I was mostly venting, wonkette is a super safe place cause of all the wonderful people like you!

      • redblack

my wife had a boyfriend in high school who tried to “take some liberties” when she was a freshman. and i swear the same revenge on that guy, should we ever meet.

but, as she rightly points out, this isn’t about me. it’s about how our society views and treats women as…

        lesser.

        available.

        objects.

sadly, that was the first of a couple of similar episodes. and most of our friends have similar enraging anecdotes.

bottom line: that kind of stupid shouldn’t just hurt. it should do crippling damage. then again, that’s my male revenge talking.

our world should be a place where men would never consider such brutality, aggression, or even ignorant passivity against women. not just because the punishment for such behavior is a deterrent; but because they couldn’t even conceive of treating other people like that.

I was in the Army years ago, and an Army cook at that. I slept with a 10 inch cook’s knife every night, and I STILL was sexually assaulted. They look for ways to get around your defenses. To his credit though, my attacker managed to run to the medics before he bled out.

  • Politiquacks

As played out in a great Bojack Horseman episode, if women turned on all the men who harassed them with guns drawn, we’d at least finally get gun control passed.

    • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Talk about killing two birds (and one bad guy with a boner) with one stone.

    • SalisburyWitch

that and if black people started with open carry.

    • Carole

Women would still be convicted of murder for defending themselves and black people would still be shot for carrying.

    • Elaine

Loved that idea! However, I realized after a few seconds of thought that they would only pass a gun control law preventing WOMEN from owning guns. Because, ya know, women are too weak and mentally unstable (especially during their time of the month) to know how to handle a gun! And why do women need guns when they have their men to protect them? But the mentally ill? Sure – give ’em a gun!

  • Walter Wellstone

I wish someone would hack into Reddit and merged the /r/The_Donald and /r/incel forums so all postings end up in the same place. That would be a fun read.

“Well, we’re Trump Conservatives. We solve problems…”

WT actual F is this? Is there some hidden, undocumented evidence of a “Trump Conservative” ever actually solving a problem? Or maybe that writer thinks the word “solve” is synonymous with “create”. I bet that’s it. It’s just a disagreement over semantics.

  • Kathleen Perez

But, to be fair, I WOULD like to see all men who randomly grope women just shot to death immediately. It does seem like that might prove to be a deterrent once a few hundred were lying on the ground in a pool of their own blood and word got out. Just sayin’.

    • CovfefeOfTheThoughtlessMind

I thought Aileen Wuornos was dead, but there you are. On the other hand, I can understand the desire for a dramatic deterrent.

  • pd1648

Who is virtue signaling? Is “#me too” virtue signaling? I thought it was women coming out of the dark and the guilt and the feeling dirtiness that has kept us silent. And “me too”, too.

For so many of us, the men whose words and mouths and hands and fingers and worse slithered into our souls to stain them forever belonged to fathers, pastors, coworkers, managers — men we respected, and men we thought respected us. No shower could wash it all off.

But at 64, because of the courage of countless other women, I know that I was never dirty, or guilty. I hope millions of other women feel the same way. We should all be standing in the sunlight with our truths.

As for guns, should we just shoot the men I mentioned above? Should I shoot a co-worker who accidentally on purpose touches my breast, or makes an off color comment? Should we even shoot our rapists? My understanding of “normal” human nature leads me to think that that would just add one unspeakable horror and trauma to another. Besides, on the street, it’s too easy to be taken by surprise and inadvertantly arm one’s attacker.

But these guys don’t really want us to start shooting, do they?

    • Carole

They use “virtue signaling” to describe normal conversations among women, or among LGBT people, or among POC, or between women and POC, etc. But the biggest “virtue signaling” I’ve ever seen is a bunch of fat white guys drinking milk to prove they’re not Jewish, or something.

      Fuck these people.

      • Elaine

Jewish people can drink milk – just not with meat.

    • CafeenMan

The right wing is a strawman machine. They can’t defend their views with an honest argument nor can they refute out views with an honest argument. What they’re best at is creating zippy little expressions that have nothing to do with anything but they pretend is an argument.

  • Atheist

“Virtue signaling” is bullshit, and so is the assumption that women won’t be punished for defending themselves. Women are already punished for being feminists, for saying no even to small favors, and bullied for standing up for themselves in school and on the job. For what fucking reason do these dolts think that giving women guns is somehow going to make the world respect us? It won’t. It’ll give them another reason to make men into victims when a woman shoots him in self defense. It’ll be the woman who gets in trouble, not the man, especially if he lives and denies the whole thing ever happened as rapists tend to do.

This is just another way to put the onus on women to stop rape and to not demand rapists stop raping. Rape is already severely underreported and women who do come forward are accused of being vindictive golddiggers trying to ruin a good man’s name. So fuck these guys, fuck rape apologists, and fuck the assumption that guns are a magic solution to rape. If a rape victim is a child, they’re not going to be carrying a gun. If the rape victim is a convicted felon, they can’t carry guns. If a rape victim is too poor to buy a gun, there won’t be a gun to stop it. If a rape victim freezes rather than fights, a gun isn’t going to solve that either. So fuck gun humpers too!

As for me, I recently bought some pepper spray gel and will be combining that with my knowledge of ball smashing (whether it’s my foot, my elbow, my fist, whatever). That’s the only thing guaranteed to floor a man long enough to run away and get help. Do you think a gun is guaranteed to put someone down? I read a story about a woman in Georgia who shot an intruder FIVE TIMES in the FACE with a .38 and he still managed to flee so don’t assume a gun can stop someone.

    #MeToo

    • CafeenMan

I like your post but I doubt someone shot five times in the face with a .38 went anywhere but down. I mean she could have winged his cheek five times but otherwise I can’t see anyone going anywhere afterward.

    • HarpyLibtart

And I remember a lady who only recently got out of prison for firing a warning shot AWAY from her abusive husband when he attacked her, so what guarantee do we have that shooting a dude attempting to rape us isn’t going to land us in prison as well?
Not to mention which if women actually started shooting attempted rapists on the regular, it would take milliseconds for these idiots’ tune to change from “why didn’t you try to fight him off?” to “why didn’t you try just saying NO?”

      • Atheist

Yes, exactly. Women do say no and women do fight back. Even if a woman freezes and can’t fight back, it’s not a “yes” to rape.

I remember reading about Marissa Alexander. It’s injustice that she had to plea to an actual crime so she could be released. All she was doing was trying to protect her newborn baby.

      • sillyclucker

I remember that woman. Wasn’t that in Florida ?

So a bunch of men who relentlessly dehumanise women and fantasise about sexually harassing and assaulting them…are recommending women arm themselves and shoot anyone who sexually harasses and assaults them. I don’t think they’ve thought this through.
