Probably lied about that too.

Politifact is loathed on the Right for upholding the premise that there is observable fact in the world that can be weighed, measured, and rated either “Pinocchio Tire Fire” or “Yeah We Guess, With Nitpicks Because HOLY SHIT Are We Nitpickers.” On the Left, it is usually cited as a neutral, impartial arbiter, with occasional bitching about how it has been beaten around the head and the body by the Right until it cries rightwing drunk uncle and gives them everything they want, like a common Facebook. But other than the continual seeking of false “balance” so they won’t look partisan, other than that, you know, whatever. They’re mostly fine.

Politifact, generally, is good at providing facts and terrible at analyzing them — sort of like how Maggie Haberman at the New York Times is good at gossip and terrible at reporting anything that’s not just palace intrigue. You know, like that.

Let us give you an example of how cribbed and curdled Politifact can be: For its 2011 “Lie of the Year,” it chose Democratic attack ads on the GOP saying the GOP had voted to abolish Medicare. But hadn’t the GOP just voted to abolish Medicare? NO, LIE OF THE YEAR, quoth Politifact, because Medicare would still exist for those over 55 — just not for the rest of us! Nice job, Politifact.

Now we have Politifact here to explain that Hillary Clinton is a Lying Liar who Lies like a common Al Gore (who also isn’t a liar), like so:

Oh, Hillz, what did you lie now!

Citing the Las Vegas shooting that killed 59 people and injured hundreds, Hillary Clinton urged the nation to do more to prevent gun violence during a speech at the University of California at Davis on Monday. […]

Clinton went on to make a claim about the number of mass shootings that have taken place this year — and misstated how they are defined.

“There have been more than 270 mass shootings in the United States this year alone. That’s where four or more are killed. Two hundred and seventy. We cannot accept this as normal. We cannot become desensitized.”

HILLARY, YOU IGNORANT SLUT! While Politifact points out in the bowels of its You-Lying story that federal data USED to define a “mass shooting” as four or more people killed, NOW most websites that track mass shootings define them as four or more people killed OR INJURED. And if you only count the ones with four people KILLED, there are NOT 270 of them so far this year!

Say a million words at us, Politifact:

Our ruling

Hillary Clinton in her UC Davis speech said there have been more than 270 mass shootings in the United States so far this year. She defined the events as “where four or more are killed.”

Our research has shown that a broad definition of mass shootings requires four or more people to be killed or injured. There have been more than 270 of those horrific crimes so far this year.

But Clinton left out the key words “or injured,” dramatically changing the criteria for these shootings. There have been a much smaller number of mass shootings that meet this stricter criteria of “four or more people killed,” nowhere near the 270 she claimed.

We rate Clinton’s claim False.

Fuckin’ liars, why they lie? Probably because they are Clintons, and William Safire once called Hillary a “congenital liar” because of fucking TRAVELGATE. (Read that last link, please, I’ll wait.)

For shits and giggles, let us look at some of the Politifacted statements of Donald Trump — who, naturally, gets many “Pants on Fire” ratings from Politifact because have you ever actually heard him open his mouth?? — and see where Politifact places his bar. (It is in the wine cellar, under the Chateau Lafite Rothschild.) All links can be found here.

Here’s one that reads “no loopholes, many deported.” It is MOSTLY false!

Here is one that is actually False! But not OH MY GOD YOU ARE BURNING UP false. Which it is.

What’s this? Only Mostly False? Eat me.

Oh, half-true, because the “majority support”? (The majority DO support! Also fuck you!)

Politifact needs to explore its true calling: joining Breitbart and cooking up stats on black-crime.

The country — we took it over and owed over $20 trillion. As you know, the last eight years, they borrowed more than it did in the whole history of our country. So they borrowed more than $10 trillion, right? And yet, we picked up $5.2 trillion just in the stock market. Possibly picked up the whole thing in terms of the first nine months, in terms of value. So you could say, in one sense, we’re really increasing values. And maybe in a sense we’re reducing debt. But we’re very honored by it. And we’re very, very happy.

Because the important thing is the definition of a mass shooting, not mass shootings.

    • jesterpunk

The right tries to change that meaning to include people who dont know each other or doesnt include people who survive or when it doesnt happen on the 3rd full moon of the month.

      • Beanz&Berryz

Then they didn’t happen at all… by definition…

        • jesterpunk

But if a gun owner was anywhere in the area it counts as a defensive gun use meaning we need more guns.

          • Beanz&Berryz

            Herorgiastic defensive gun use…

      • JMP

Because it’s easier to pretend mass shootings aren’t really a problem if we ignore the most common kind, when an abusive man decides to murder his family.

    • Daniel

Like how it’s vital to identify exactly what gun was used and misidentification means the shooting wasn’t so bad, if indeed it happened at all.

      • CafeenMan

In NRA world, there are no wrongful shootings. None of them count for some reason or another.

For example, suicides don’t count because reasons.

And when a former law-abiding, responsible gun owner commits a crime with a gun then he was a criminal and it doesn’t count.

And so on. Oh yeah, swimming pools and cars also too!!!!

The NHL is fairly liberal (Canada influence), so I watch that. I gave up on the NFL years ago for moral reasons, and I was a season-ticket holder. MLB is fixed, the ball and players are juiced, but it’s OK as long as I turn off the military fellating/national anthem vomit when it comes on.

          • Three Finger Salute

At least Canadians more or less get their frustrations out in hockey fights and then say sorry afterwards. I should get into hockey more. I’ve already decided that if the Cubs don’t make it, I’m rooting for the Expos.

          • Wild Cat

            Anyone but the Skanks.

The NHL has annual pro-gay games scheduled for each team, minority and gay reach-out representatives, etc. It’s much riskier than the anti-cancer pabulum from other sports (I mean, who is fucking pro-cancer?).

      Bing-FUCKING-O!

  • KnaveOfSwords

This is the same politifact that called Clinton a liar about Trump’s tax plan because her people used his (almost certainly false) stated net worth to put together an estimate of how much he’d save, rather than using experts attempts to estimate it based on the miniscule amount of data that’s publicly available. They’re usually decent, but every now and then feel the need to shit the bed to avoid being accused of bias for noticing how many lies are coming from people on the right.

  • eastcoastlib

Okay, I’m not up on the exact number of mass shootings in my lifetime but i’m willing to bet it is < a fucking shitload. But by all means, let's focus on the the irrelevant details while we wait for the next one.

    • Three Finger Salute

Not sure about “mass shootings” (which seems to be a goal post that can be conveniently moved for political expediency), but according to one commentator (Mark Shields, on PBS), more Americans have been killed in this country from guns since 1968 than U.S. soldiers have died in all wars since the Civil War.

      Rated true by whom? Politifact!

      http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2013/jan/18/mark-shields/pbs-commentator-mark-shields-says-more-killed-guns/

This statement was made right after Sandy Hook and you know what? We did nothing then and will continue to do nothing now. Except for the all-important thoughts and prayers.

  • Good_Gawd_Yall

I kinda feel that Politifact has jumped the proverbial shark. If a republican is speaking, the odds are greater than 75% that s/he’s lying. We really don’t need a “ratings” system for “how bad the lie is.” We need outrage that everything they say is a fucking lie.

Politifact has also ruled that, while Hillary did not actually physically murder Vince Foster she did fail to talk to him at a cocktail party in 1988, causing him to die a thousand metaphoric deaths. Claim that Hillary did not murder Vince Foster: Mostly False!

    • Three Finger Salute

Maybe Vince really liked Hillary, went to bed that night and “died” of petite mort. Or maybe she went full-Canadian once she started getting into the new religion of universal healthcare and killed him with kindness.

Debateable, but as someone who likes Pepsi but has to refrain from dark sodas (phosphoric acid can help cause kidney stones) I’ve been enjoying the one they brought back in stores.

I don’t know about a monster, but I tried that stuff back in the day and it just tasted like Pepsi that had gone flat. I’m not much of a soda person anyway, though.

I don’t mind calling the right OR left out on errors. That’s how you learn not to make mistakes the next time. But it seems to me that they’re not all that diligent about discerning between errors and outright lies.

  • Manders

Ah yes, “Hillary Clinton’s” “lie” that I have seen bandied about by dozens of talking heads, celebrities, and folks on Twitter. They’re all likely repeating “Hillary Clinton’s” “lie” because they, like her, read the statistic and misremembered the “and injured part” or someone else told it to them (or they heard it, saw it or read it) and left out the “and injured” part.

  • Carpe Vagenda

I like it when they give Clinton a partly false because what she said was true but it makes her sound better than they think she is.

  • JD Mulvey

One of my favorite gratuitous Trump lies:
“I don’t settle cases. You know what happens? When you start settling lawsuits, everybody sues you. I don’t get sued because I don’t settle cases. I win in court.”

  • chimpevil

Oh please, Rebecca, don’t you know that Politifact has a fine-tuned algorithm that turns True or Mostly True into Mostly False or False for Hillary statements because she’s such a proven liar? Still in the bag for her I see.

  • Lefty Wright

Yeah, several fact checkers change their rules from day to day. One day, they will stick strictly with what a claim is with no wiggle room, the next day, they start making excuses for the “intent” or what people may think the claim means. Or one time out of a hundred it may apply and give it a mostly false rating, then the next day when it proves wrong only one out of three times, give it the same rating. I have seen this change within 24 hours. And I have pointed it out, to no avail, of course.

  • Bitter Scribe

Don’t be too hard on Politifact. After all, they’re trying to be fair to both sides, and facts have a liberal bias.

“Unaccompanied alien children”? I know I’ve mentioned before what made the one Reliable newspaper (they say so themselves) my favorite: the Weekly World News. In a story in early April of ’93? ’94? The cover story was NASA FINDS ALIEN BABY IN CRASHED UFO. And, in a small block, was “Unidentified farm couple waiting to adopt”

Paper was in b&w, so you couldn’t see the red and blue blankets….

It has been revealed that a famous man is a sexual predator and yet why hasn’t Hillary Clinton, a private citizen who has been widely told to retire to Grey Gardens and shut up forever, condemned him on-demand, whilst using the correct tone and words, after the appropriate time interval, and while donating money to charity in an amount and on terms precisely-determined by men, after the revelations were made public?

You might have also heard that the U.S. head of state is a man who has admitted on tape to sexual assault and that his second-in-command is a man who admits he can’t be trusted to be left alone in the presence of women, and yet why hasn’t Hillary offered to chaperone the two men so they don’t accidentally assault any of the, admittedly few, women who find themselves in the presence of these men?

Why hasn’t Hillary Clinton stopped re-litigating the 2016 election, when she should instead just be quiet and let pundits and political foes re-litigate every aspect of her personal and professional life dating back decades for their own professional gain?

  • ryp

I read some liberal somewhere once called a magazine a clip, so they are all liars when it comes to gun control.

  • call me cray cray, but do the injured not count as casualties now?

    • King Beauregard

A casualty is a soldier who cannot do the work of a soldier — so it’s a term that’s useful only to determine how many functioning soldiers you have. Thus, a soldier who is too injured to fight is a casualty; so is a soldier who is too ill to fight, or a soldier who has been captured. In non-military situations, the term “casualty” doesn’t really have much meaning.

I’m not sure if that helps or it’s just me being persnickety.

  • going4baroque

politifact: Hillary is sometimes not good at numbers. If you’ll recall, her primary reason for having a server in the basement is because she just wanted one device to access her email (I KNOW!) only for some renegade agency (such as the FBI!) who are notoriously picky about facts too, to point out that Hillary’s “one device” is equal to a dozen or so of everyone else’s. She trained to be a lawyer ferchrissakes, and not, god forbid, a mathematician.

  • GHERKINS OF RESTIVENESS!

I heard Politifact shit out something like this on NPR a while back. I think it was a Gavin Newsome quote though, so they were actually fairly circumspect on the WHAT A DAMN LIAR*
(*except for that part of being true in the areas after the speaking started, and only up until where it ended)

  • Delu

Politifact’s analysis are usually spot on, it’s their ratings that are a whole lot more sketchy. The reason being that they don’t TRULY have any actual set of guidelines on which to base their ratings on (I feel like the get together as a panel and then vote on the rating or something), and this is despite what they claim to the contrary.

I’ve seen one particular fact check where they took context into consideration and said as much for their rating. And then I saw another where they stated the context in the analysis but for some goddamned reason, clearly did NOT take that context into consideration for the rating.

I’ve also seen some particularly head scratching fact checks which makes one want to ask: “was there any point to doing a fact check on this?” One of these was a fact check on Trump that had the true rating, and the basis for that true rating is….because Trump said a fact!

But that’s like factchecking a guy who said something like “In 1776, America gained her independence” and rating it true because of course it is, it’s a historical fact.

In that particular statement Trump WAS citing a fact. However his USAGE of that factual statement was to push a fallacious conclusion. I can’t remember exactly what the factcheck was on, however Politifact focused on the issue that Trump said a fact (because yes he did) and somehow not on how he used said fact (which was clearly NOT). The value of doing a factcheck for such a thing (and not on WHY he stated the fact he did) kind of makes no sense whatsoever.

    • Odd Jørgensen

for some reason they do a lot of “fact checking” on sites that is basically the Onion in content.

  • Serolf Divad

Definite cheap shot. It’s unlikely Clinton was being deliberately misleading. But then I’ve pretty much grown used to these fact check sites leaping on any any and every incorrect statement by a Democrat to “balance out” the 630 bald-faced lies by Republicans they had to fact check this week.

  • Maybe

The only way Repubs can “win” arguments is by playing word games and redefining what words mean.

Clinton made a mistake by leaving out “or injured.” A mistake is not a lie. That’s why there are two different words for the situation.

  • mary5920

Reading Vince Foster’s suicide note is very sobering. He nailed it–the “travelgate” episode involved a very mismanaged travel office that was giving travel perks to the beltway press and they very much resented the Clintons for ending it.
    The last of Foster’s words:

The FBI lied in their report to the AG The press is covering up the illegal benefits they received from the travel staff The GOP has lied and misrepresented its knowledge and role and covered up a prior investigation The Ushers Office plotted to have excessive costs incurred, taking advantage of Kaki and HRC The public will never believe the innocence of the Clintons and their loyal staff The WSJ editors lie without consequence I was not meant for the job or the spotlight of public life in Washington. Here ruining people is considered sport.

  • Odd Jørgensen

That whole “needs more dead” to count as a mass shooting is ridonkulous, if I open fire on a crowd, injuring 30 people but not actually kill any one, did a mass shooting not occur? You would think the sensible approach would be to count the people shot, and call it mass killings if casualties are the only stat in question.
