DELIGHTFUL.

We’ve been big fans of Senator Kamala Harris for a long time, especially since she became the junior senator from California. She’s really good at making those Republican boys confused and spittin’ mad in Senate hearings (and also just in general), and hey, she just came out in support of single payer, which is a Good Thing! (We also wrote a YELLY THING about how it’s Not Good for people to be shitting on Kamala Harris, a post that is correct and has aged very well, thanks for asking.)

But one thing we’ve noticed about Harris is that, since she’s become a senator, she mostly keeps her head down and does good, hard work, and hasn’t been one to run off to the TV cameras every time she’s got something to say.

But Harris has peeked out a couple times lately, and Thursday afternoon, she appeared on Ari Melber’s MSNBC program and gave an interview that was just DELIGHTFUL. We want you to watch the videos this time, even though you never do what we say, OK?

Here’s Harris explaining why she’s so passionate about reforming the bail system here in U.S. America. Is that an issue you’ve thought a lot about? If not, Kamala Harris is here to make you think about that:

In this next clip, Harris says Americans, REGARDLESS of political affiliation, even if they like Donald Trump for some reason, should be “concerned and troubled AND OFFENDED” at what Russia did to the 2016 election. WE WHO ARE WONKETTE AGREE.

Next, Harris tells Melber it’s very possible her Senate Intelligence Committee will reach a point where it wants testimony right from the nasty orange squatter in the White House. Melber asks, “Under what conditions?” Harris replies, “We’ll see where the facts lead us.” At which point Melber accuses her of SOUNDING LIKE DONALD TRUMP. (!!!)

In response, Harris kicks his entire ass right in the dick and leaves. JUST FOOLING, she replies, “Uh … NOT AT ALL” and busts out laughing. See? DELIGHTFUL, even when you Trump libel her.

OK, we assume you’ve been good and have watched the serious videos up to this point. Now, the fun ones! Here, Melber does a word-association lightning round with Harris, and she shows remarkable restraint when called upon to finish a sentence that starts with “Ted Cruz … ”

And finally, here is Harris telling Melber her biggest regret about her Spotify playlist of her all-time favorite songs (which exists and is awesome and you can listen right here), and it is that she’s pissed she forgot to put Bootsy Collins on it. (Pssssst, Kamala Harris! You can add songs to your playlists anytime you want!) Then they talk about what a badass Stevie Wonder is.

We believe we have proven our point about how delightful Kamala Harris is, yes? Therefore, by the holy decree of yr Wonkette, she will be our next president, unless somebody else awesome like Kirsten Gillibrand wants it, which would be OK too.

  • Résistance Land Shark Ω

Harris/Gillibrand 2020 with Hilz as SoS (again).

    • dslindc

      Klobuchar also a good choice.

      • Résistance Land Shark Ω

There’s actually a lot of good choices. However, this requires the democrats to actually field those good choices … and that’s not a guarantee.

    • canes_pugnaces

HRC is too polarizing, plus: it’s time for new, not old.

      • Résistance Land Shark Ω

Agreed. But do the democrats have to pick an old, white dude?

  • msanthropesmr

    But her emails!

    UPDATE:

WE FUCKING WON UMSU ELECTIONS 2018. I’M DRUNK AND GLAD AND GLAD.

    • WomanInThePersistence

Yay! I’m so happy for you! You sis a good thing and should feel good.

      • persistently_resistant_gayby

We won by around 100 votes – 1518 to 1333 votes.

        I’m so fucking glad.

        • Skeptical_thinker

Doesn’t that mean that you now have more work to do?

          • persistently_resistant_gayby

I don’t care – it was fucking worth it to spite the current President.

This is the person who thought the best way to deal with campus sexual assault was a FUCKING CANDLELIGHT VIGIL.

          • jesterpunk

Your current president was Betsy DeVos?

          • persistently_resistant_gayby

She makes Betsy DeVos look petite.

          • Skeptical_thinker

Well, in that case, good on you and stick a thumb in DeVos’s eye for me.

    • proudgrampa

So bring me up to speed. What’s this about?

    • msanthropesmr

I just think of the Edgar Winter group. Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun….

    • BigCSouthside

I figure by 2028 the GOP will fully embrace the party of stupid and run a Kid Rock/Ted Nugent ticket

      • AnnieGetYerFun

You think it will take that long?

        • msanthropesmr

          It already happened.

I will say that if a Demonrat wore a filthy flag, like a Eurofurrin wears a scarf, Republicans would supplode with outrage.

I know, right? Sonic Youth was probably starting to get a little weirded out by their name by the time they broke up in 2011.

    • Proud Liberal

I love Al Franken! He would be my choice.

    • Lance Thrustwell

I know this joke has been made before, but it’s too bad Jill Stein is a douche. Franken/Stein would be awesome.

  • Bananas Foster

Interesting. She faintly pings my bipolar radar.

  • P’jama Pahnts

Let’s get her to the WH, signed, sealed and delivered!

  • Proud Liberal

I ran a poll on Twitter. She won hands down. I think she would be a formidable candidate.

    • msanthropesmr

I ran a poll on Twitter. People don’t think the new Twinkies are as good.

      • Proud Liberal

Well, some people do have a brain and think. I realize it isn’t a scientific poll.

      • Beanz&Berryz

I think Twinkies would fall head-to-head with “creme”-filled cupcakes

      • Celtic_Gnome

How do you fuck up Twinkies?

  • coozledad

I want to have Kamala’s Wall Street Democrat babies. Mostly because I want all the coal jobs to go to nonwhites.

  • Vincent Ricola

I think Kamala is great, but I heard we’re supposed to run a really old white dude if we want to win because the Dems need new blood or something.

    • msanthropesmr

Particularly an old white not aktually a democrat.

      • Vincent Ricola

An outsider perhaps? One who had been in congress forever with no real accomplishments? 7 minute abs? #winning

We we have to appeal to “working class whites” or we will lose forever.

    • Wolf Tracker

Nope but it wouldn’t hurt for her to understand what the Bernie supporters want and it ain’t GOP lite.

You will need Liberals and independents to win any national election.

      • mfp, all 6s&7s&9s

        khaa-ryst, you–with this tired-ass bullshit…again?

        • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

“GOP lite” obviously means Democrats, so . . . liberals vote for “GOP lite” and independents vote for racist misogynist so-called socialists? Because the True Left says we have to get votes from right-of-D independents . . . this is just so confusing.

          • mfp, all 6s&7s&9s

            ya makin me brain hurt

  • proudgrampa

I fell in love all over again.

  • Beanz&Berryz

Or as the clever Mike Huckabee thinks of women.. ignorant…

  • Kurt Weil

I’ve read she has a “law and order” record. War on drugs has to end and she needs to say so out loud before I would vote for her. I think she’s already said “single payer,” so she’s got half my vote.

Also, I would like to kick the Melber guy in the dick because who has that name?

    • Beanz&Berryz

Melber Toast never got such a hard time…

    • P’jama Pahnts

Wouldn’t it be amazeballs if Republicans broke the ACA just enough to usher in single payer as the best viable fix, and then someone like her got it through? Heads would assplode.

    • Wild Cat

It is slightly better than Hairy Screaming Baby Armadillos, no?

    • BigCSouthside

She was a prosecutor. They don’t keep their jobs long if they don’t have a law and order past.

Isingle issue purity politics loses elections. This is about power. We can’t do shit progressively if we don’t have any allies in power. Harris is a democrat. Democrats are our ideological allies. Put them in power even if your pet issue isn’t 100% taken care of by them off the bat.

      • Covfefe

Sides, she wants to reform bail system.

        • BigCSouthside

Right. Progressivism is never an overnight payoff. Bernie bros were naive to think it can be, and sad it wasn’t. They had a massively simplistic view of how modern politics works.

The GOP is formidable for two reasons
          1) they are REALLY good at propaganda, and due to the nature of their base, it works very well.
2). Their voting bloc falls the fuck in line when the time comes.

Propaganda won’t work as well on liberals, so we need to be really fucking good at point 2. We need to be a United federation of liberalism, regardless of where you fall on the left spectrum

      • Moebym of the Returners

        Well said.

    • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

So, you’re saying recitation of special words and phrases gets your vote?

  • Resistance Fighter Callyson

Harris replies, “We’ll see where the facts lead us.” At which point Melber accuses her of SOUNDING LIKE DONALD TRUMP. (!!!)

    Um, Ari dear?

    https://i.imgflip.com/1p737r.gif

  • canes_pugnaces

She’s a contender. But, the big but: I don’t see the wall-eyed Dumbfuckistan residents voting for her, and Democrats do not vote in sufficient numbers in red states.

    • Résistance Land Shark Ω

Of course not! She is a vagina-having ‘murrican and has a funny furrin’ first name!

      • canes_pugnaces

        Sigh… what’s wrong with us?

        • Résistance Land Shark Ω

Nothing wrong with the majority in the US … lots wrong with them.

      • P’jama Pahnts

Born in Oakland too, which I’m not even sure is part of real America. Birth certificate pleeze!

    • Rebel Scum with permit

I said that about Obama- “We’re blowing it again. Who’s going to vote for an African American with a name that reminds Americans of the two men they hate the most?”

    • Flashman

Also, she shares Obama’s, uh, pigmentation problem, if you’re of a certain mindset.

    • Moebym of the Returners

Kamala? What’s that, a terrrrist name? – Dumbfuckistani

  • Wolf Tracker

Is she positioning for a run?

Seems to have a good head on her shoulders and single payer a plus.

Would have to see more of her activity and voting record.

    • AnnieGetYerFun

I sincerely hope she runs at some point. I’d like her to stay in the Senate a bit longer, though, mostly because we need all the amazing Senators we can get.

      • Wolf Tracker

Right- we need both but she would likely be replaced by a Dem in the senate if she did run.

        • AnnieGetYerFun

That’s could be true – or the Kochs could run a candidate.

        • Bananas Foster

          Not likely. Absolutely.

No way California elects a Republican senator in the next decade after the last year.

  • AnnieGetYerFun

Hey, guys. Today is my 40th. I normally NEVER talk about my birfday because it feels weird. But now I’m 40 and it feels weirder. Also, no one celebrates my day with me. Even for 40.

    ETA: SAD FUCKING TROMBONE

    • msanthropesmr

      You’re younger than me. Congrats.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

I’m younger than a lot of people here. But also a fuckton older than some of these whippersnappers.

    • persistently_resistant_gayby

Happy 40th – I hear it gets easier from now on.. (I kid!)

See? We’ve moved on to a much more interesting topic: new men!

      • AnnieGetYerFun

Hm… tempting. I have two under age 5 right now. I would give up a lot for a full night’s sleep.

        • The Librarian

Lol, yes, I’d sort of forgotten that after all these years. Age does that to you. I won’t rescind that offer, though since it’s your birthday and all. :D

        • Shanzgood

          Hahaha! I haven’t had a full night’s sleep since 1996!

      • AnnieGetYerFun

Where did you go? You left us?

        • SomeBigRedDog

Colorado, the part that nobody lives in.

          • AnnieGetYerFun

Huh. Well, the NW is less awesome as a result.

          • SomeBigRedDog

Oh I’ll probably be back sometime. Unless I get too used to all the blue sky . . .

          • AnnieGetYerFun

Weird, do they have sun there?

          • SomeBigRedDog

Like, most days. And my arms turned all brown. It’s super weird.

I’m about 30 minutes north of the New Mexico border and I kind of love the desert. That was definitely a surprise.

          • AnnieGetYerFun

I love deserts. My skin, however, is not a fan.

Happy birthday Annie! Here’s to at least 61 more!

      • AnnieGetYerFun

        Happy birthday to you!

    • BearGHAZI

MOLOTOV!! I am 33, I will join you in decrepitude soon enough. XOXO have a lovely day Annie

        Thank you, my dear.

    • SadDemInTex

ah, 40….that was an interesting year. Have fun.

    • SeeTrain65

Oh, how I wish I were 40 again. No arthritis, 20/20 vision, the ability to eat real human food, and the prospects for love … as non-existent as they are now.

You know … The Salad Days.

Happy Birthday, Annie. Enjoy your day.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

Ha, I have arthritis, diabetes, and can’t eat carbs. So I get to have birthday cheese.

Oh, yes, and no diabetes either. Or hypertension. Or high cholesterol. And feet that don’t feel constantly cold. Forgot those.

(And there is nought wrong with birthday cheese. Whether in block, slice, shred or cake form.)

    • arglebargle

      40 is the new 39.

    • Gayer Than Thou

Brace yourself – it goes incredibly quickly from here. Or so my older friends have told me. *dims lights and softens focus*

    • cats530

      You’re still a baby.

    • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

50 is absolute shit. Just you wait.

    • SineDie

Ah, to be 40 again. 40 was great.

    • Old Man Yells at Cloud

Be like my mom, she claimed to be 39 until I was 40.

  • Donkey Option

I will remind all those jackoffs here on Wonkette who, during her badassness at one the hearings (when she was interrupted by Senator McCain) were all like – her tone! She shouldn’t interrupt! She should be more civil! You know who you are and you should still be ashamed for ever saying anything bad about this amazing woman!

And for those of you who don’t believe me, go back to the comments on that Wonkette article. They are probably still there.

    • msanthropesmr

      It wasn’t me.

      • Résistance Land Shark Ω

Me neither! It was him! MOOOOOMM!

    • Wolf Tracker

I watched that whole testimony and thought she was really tough and took on the men.

What is her background- was she an attorney?

      • Donkey Option

Yes, she was a prosecutor (see comments below and many of the articles written about her by Wonkette.) She is fabulous at public speaking and takes no shit, so, of course, there were people complaining about her “tone.”

        • Wolf Tracker

That makes sense because she was obviously on top of the facts.

Now that puts her in even better standing with me and I like people that know the law and was a big factor in voting for Obama.

      • stubbornirishlass

She is not just an attorney. She was California’s AG.

    • alwayspunkindrublic

I recall everyone snarking on McCain for that…but I’m senile, so…

      • Donkey Option

I argued with the people who posted it, so I have a stronger memory about it than most.

        • alwayspunkindrublic

I’ll take your word for it.

          • Donkey Option

If you go to the post about “Keep Fucking With Kamala Harris, Boys” from June 14 there are a few claiming that she derailed and talked over people (such as the post by “Equanimity” that is the fourth or fifth comment from the top right now.)

          • alwayspunkindrublic

Seriously, I believe you, even though it sounds atypical of the usual wiseasses around here.

        • AnnieGetYerFun

Oh, wow, yeah, there were! Jesus, just look at those assholes.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

        Today, we are all senile.

        • alwayspunkindrublic

Trust me, young lady, it gets worse.

    • Lance Thrustwell

Hey now, I don’t think I was one of those ‘jackoffs’, but I think it’s possible to object to an ally’s ‘tone’ or anything similar as a matter of strategy. It’s not automatically some sort of sexist knee-jerk reaction.

That said, obviously I can’t speak for those commenters. But I just don’t think we have too many sexist jerks and/or reflexive McCain supporters) around here.

    • OutOfOrbit

are you just constipated or were you born full of shit?

      • Donkey Option

Are you claiming that I am incorrect that there are comments on the article claiming that she derailed? See my response to alwayspunkindrublic below and you can go look at the comments yourself.

    • Vincent Ricola

Really? I missed the tone comments. I was too busy shooting hoodoo at Jeff Sessions lying face.

      • Erala Contratista

The Bird finished Jeff off in style yesterday.
        Today it’s Junior’s turn.
We are very far from running out of cage liners here!

    • WomanInThePersistence

I seem to have missed that. I can’t really think of any of us who would say that unsarcastically.

      • Donkey Option

Well, it wasn’t any of the good commentors, but they are there. I just remember being really livid when people were making that comment. And, since they didn’t break any commenting rules for our not allowed comment section, we just had to call them out on their shit. It was just disappointing to see, here in this lovely, beautiful bastion of awesomeness that is Wonkette.

        • WomanInThePersistence

Wait, wasn’t that one of the threads that got trolled pretty heavily?

    • jesterpunk

Are you talking about the trolls that show up on any article mentioning Kamala Harris?

      • Donkey Option

There is some of that. I just went back through the thread and there was some of that but also a lot of “we should wait, let her have more experience, when she was the AG her office tried to keep people from getting out on bail.” They weren’t obviously trolls (correct spelling and grammar) but who knows. I just pissed me off at the time and apparently still does. Also, the people saying how we shouldn’t anoint her and she’d make a good VP and wanting someone with more experience to run for the dems in 2020 (as though the last time we had a one-term senator run it turned out to be a bad thing.)

        • jesterpunk

IIRC the AG comments where Bernie Bros trolling here because she isnt pure enough. I do remember what your talking about though and most if not all of those people where not regulars here.

          • Persistent Demme

            Bernie Bros?
            Fuck that noise!!

        • AnnieGetYerFun

Woah, I must have early dementia, because I remember everyone hating the fuck out of the men for telling her to be “nice.” Or whatever word they chose. Sweet? Pleasant?

    • NastyBossetti

I, for one, loved her tone.

    • SeeTrain65

I recall blocking several people after the Sessions hearing post and then plucking more weeds from our garden after Rebecca’s post a month ago. I reinstated a few because I blocked my limit a few weeks after.

My problem with wanting Harris, Warren or Franken to run is that I’d hate to lose them in the Senate. Until Dems start winning back congressional seats, is it really a good idea to risk the ones we do have?

    • Proud Liberal

I think Harris and Warren would be replaced with Democrats but not Franken. So yeah, I agree with you. We need more Senators for sure.

    • proudgrampa

      Hobson’s choice, eh?

    • The Librarian

2018 is before 2020, so yes, if we can flip seats, that would be the best possible outcome

    • BreakingDeadMen

If Harris’s seat is not safe, nothing is.

      • Rebel Scum with permit

True, the way California politics and election laws work right now, the choice would probably be between a liberal and a centrist Democrat.

        • BreakingDeadMen

Centrist in California is still commie south of the Mason Dixon

    • Wolf Tracker

She is from a solid CA area and would be replaced by another Dem if she did run.

Kamala Harris must be a credible candidate; the Repubes are already hating on her. I do like Gillebrand, though. She told someone or another to fuck off, in those words.

    • Proud Liberal

Kirsten Gillibrand has surprised me. She is a tough woman just like Kamala. The pundits believe Joe Biden is running. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

      • Résistance Land Shark Ω

Also, as a former prosecutor, she can speak with authority to the law n’ order issues.

      • Wolf Tracker

I already heard from one in another thread who was whining about how California got a lousy deal out of the mortgage crisis settlement money. Did any state get a good deal?
And also, California was actually one of the more aggressive states in pursuing the banks.

    • AnnieGetYerFun

It’s hard to know how many of them are legit ponies and how many are Dead Breitbart trolls and/or Russians. Casting the seeds of doubt early.

      • shivaskeeper

It doesn’t matter. Very much like the extreme right they are easily led around. if even 1/10 are fake accounts, those seeds find fertile ground in with the ponies.

      • Carpe Vagenda

I’ve assumed all along most of them were right trolls. I very much doubt anyone who’s interested in any form of progressivism is busying themselves – for free – trolling the wank with other progressives. I also don’t think real progressives are gaslighting on behalf of right trolls. Useful idiots exist, but not that many.

My world view is essentially pretty simple.

  • DainBramage

If I had to be on island with a Senator, I might just pick her.
If they said, no DB, you can’t pick an attractive, young woman, you perv! We’re making you pick a man. Then I would choose Al Franken, as that would be a hoot.

    • Shanzgood

Can I have the Kennedy boy, then?

    • Rebel Scum with permit

Single payer is going to take years to transition into, and will involve complex negotiations. The good news is we’ve already taken a big step down the road with the ACA.
Meant to reply to comment above, Disquis strikes again.

    • Finnibar87

Can we also opt for Canadians?

    • Rick Hill

Idk, he may be a little pissed you forced him onto an island.

  • pgjack

Loved Kamala when she was our AG and love her in the senate. I’m not too excited about her jumping on board with Bernie. Single payer is complicated and the Bernie Bros and Hoes want to make it a single issue election. I’m for single payer health care but there are so many details involved that it should not be a make or break position any more than abortion rights or climate change denial.

    • Carpe Vagenda

I don’t think she’s jumping on board. I think she’s neutralizing him. He has to deliver something now for her to vote on.

We really need to get a candidate out front now to get the party to pull together around a solid platform so if she is going to run she needs to start her campaign now.

Trump is so weak and his base and the GOP are so split she could springboard off that and get a big head start on any other candidates.

    Make it happen Wonkettes!

    • spangled

agree and disagree. we need someone to rally behind, but the longer someone is in the spotlight, the longer the right (and far left) has to figure out attacks on them.

one of the big differences between Obama’s election and Hillary’s was that she was an established figure and he was an upstart.

hillary has been a public figure forever, and she has been smeared for the past 30 years. the right could point to decades of bullshit and character attacks to hurt her. in 2008, obama was mostly an unknown. the GOP had to scramble to sling mud at him because they didn’t know him. ergo, most of the stuff they came up with was ridiculous.

      • Amy Klobuchar 2020!

      • Wolf Tracker

I don’t think they can do that with Kamala unless she has some past we don’t know about.

Her record is clean from what I see and still a new comer like Obama was when he went from Senate to candidate.

        • BigCSouthside

They can, and will. A lot of people still believe obama is not American, and that Hillary is a no bullshit traitor

          • Wolf Tracker

            That only helped Obama.

          • Notreelyhelping

We know that the GOP knows neither scruples nor restraint in these matters; so an overdue library book will become theft of government property, and passing a joint in college will become drug trafficking.

          • Wolf Tracker

Better to get ahead of all that early like Obama did instead of in the middle of a primary.

        • Old Man Yells at Cloud

If you look at the history of presidents, the problem with a newbie is that they get very little accomplished vs an old pro who has been in Congress long enough to know who to grab, where to grab them and how hard to twist to get legislation through Congress. We haven’t had the later since LBJ and we have not seen significant progress since LBJ either.

          • Wolf Tracker

            One word: Obama

          • Vincent Ricola

Exactly. Not everyone wants a revolution, some Americans just want a somewhat experienced politician who has a history of knowing who to call when they want something done because that’s how it all works.

I’m so sick of people treating government like a reality teevee show where we need some outsider to come in at the end of the season to make it “better”, they seem to have taken the wrong message from the Obama presidency and think any newcomer is going to be the same great guy. Obama was the exception, not the rule.

          • Wolf Tracker

          • Vincent Ricola

I’ve read your 2016 CNN link and don’t feel like engaging you with a bunch of counter links. You obviously have strong opinions about candidates, most of which I firmly disagree, so we’ll have to end that discussion here.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

Would you stop with the “GOP lite” thing, please? It doesn’t describe anyone here.

        • Maybe

They’re already calling her a “Corporate Democrat.”

And they attacked Clinton on a non-existent email server issue and it worked. They swift-boated John Kerry.

Never underestimate the Repub’s ability to false label and smear anyone of anything they want to defeat. They’re horrible at governing, but great at winning elections.

          • Wolf Tracker

Oh they will try it but she can get out ahead of that just like Obama did. That just shows how scared of her they are.

Most people do not know who she is. She needs to change that and get on social networks and tell her story and explain her platform.

          • Maybe

I hope so. I think, though, that it is a sad truth that in our culture women are easier to smear than men. Bill did a lot more questionable stuff than Hillary, but he was pretty quickly forgiven by most. Imaginary stuff sticks to her.

          • Persistent Demme

I’m much more concerned with so-called “progressives” smearing anyone.
They are like little toddlers with their constant bleating of “you need us, you need us!”
They sling around the “Corporate Democrat” label when they should be worrying about the “Nazi” label.

          • Maybe

Dems do have a habit of circling the wagons and firing inwards.

Let us hope that the Trump Presidency may have wised them up a bit.

        • shivaskeeper

The join the party. Quit trying to be the outsiders making demands. How is this a hard concept to understand?

          • Wolf Tracker

You “they need to shut the fuck up, sit down and accept what they are given.”

We pretty much established your position.

          • shivaskeeper

Yes, we have. I have been pretty clear about that from the beginning. Outsiders don’t get to shape a national platform from the outside.

But what do I know? That attitude makes me a fascist right?

          • Wolf Tracker

Outsider= anyone that does not bow the knee to you

          • shivaskeeper

Outsider = someone who is not a registered Democratic Party member who thinks they should have the power to shape the Democratic Party platform.

Again, not a hard concept to grasp, but you see to be failing at it.

          • Wolf Tracker

You should ad this to your permanent profile:

“they need to shut the fuck up, sit down and accept what they are given.”

          • shivaskeeper

Still think I’m a fascist? I’ll add that my profile as well also, too.

Oh wait, no I won’t because, you as an outsider to y profile does not get a say in it.

          • WomanInThePersistence

This one is…..interesting. I don’t know if your usual “challenge, but be respectful” approach will work.

          • shivaskeeper

I’m not trying that. I am actually tired of “progressives and liberals” who insist on telling me what my party should do to appease them from outside the party.

FFS, should I take party advice from the Freedom Caucus while we’re at it?

          • WomanInThePersistence

            I’m right there with you.

          • Persistent Demme

It’s a shame that I have to skip whole sections of the non-comments these days.

        • Resistance Fighter Astraea

I will make sure I don’t vote for Hillary for president again, promise.

    • BigCSouthside

I disagree about getting a candidate out front this early. Lay low while Lord Fuck-bonkers chokes himself with his tiny hands

That way the republican shit slinger propaganda machine isn’t focused on going to work falsely destroying her rep like they did to Hillary and Nancy.

      • Wolf Tracker

I don’t see Reps doing that unless she has some history we are not aware of and Obama started building his campaign early and had clean record.

        • BigCSouthside

Obama quietly built his coalition originally, occasionally popping up, much like Kamala is doing now.

By the time obama had amassed his forces and was at the gates, the best they could do was birtherism

          • Wolf Tracker

He wasn’t all that quiet as I remember.

There are going to be a lot of candidates in 2020 and the party needs a leader to coalesce around now.

          • BigCSouthside

He did a few high profile gigs, but mostly just networked with the right people and got his shit together.

It’s my hope that the democrats don’t turn it into a clusterfuck of 29 candidates, and quietly lay the groundwork for a front runner, so when the time comes it’s basically down to two fairly similar candidates, a la 08

          • Wolf Tracker

I think they need to announce early and get a solid platform otherwise you will have that clusterfuck.

Dems, Liberals and Independents are looking for a leader right now.

          • Celtic_Gnome

By separating Democrats and Liberals into different categories, you’re dooming us already.

Republicans don’t win elections by finding candidates who will appeal to Republicans, Conservatives, and Independents.

          • Celtic_Gnome

We need to focus on 2018. After the Republicans were destroyed in 1964, they didn’t focus solely on the White House. They started building from the ground up, winning local and state elections. Yes, they won the WH in 1968, but that wasn’t that great of a victory since Nixon had to deal with Democratic majorities in both houses. The Republicans didn’t take back Congress until 1994. That’s when all the work from the past 30 years came to fruition.

We need to take back Congress, and we need veto-proof and filibuster-proof majorities. Then, we can talk about 2020.

        • Resistance Fighter Astraea

If our candidate doesn’t have any bad history, the Republicans will manufacture it. No reason to give them extra time to focus on demonizing one person for the next three years.

          • Wolf Tracker

            Didn’t work against Obama.

I am starting to think there re people here that think Hillary will run again.

            Big mistake.

          • Resistance Fighter Astraea

It worked against Kerry and Gore.

No one thinks Hillary is running again, jesus.

          • Wolf Tracker

Right- well except all the people still blaming Bernie and promoting Hillary on here.

          • Resistance Fighter Astraea

You think people are promoting her because they think she’s going to win again? That is not what’s happening here.

          • Wolf Tracker

            Are you sure?

          • Resistance Fighter Astraea

            Yes.

          • Wolf Tracker

            We will see then!

          • Resistance Fighter Astraea

Take a poll if you like. See if any regular non-commenters here actually think Clinton is running again in 2020.

I just have no idea how you come to that conclusion based on what people have said. It’s as if you just can’t believe that people genuinely supported her and found things wrong with how Bernie ran his campaign that helped to damage her chances in the general. Which pisses us off.

          • Wolf Tracker

I belong to many forums where her people are all out in force promoting her for another run.

I don’t think she will because she know she would lose and just a ploy to sell books but it is happening.

          • Resistance Fighter Astraea

*oops I meant run, not win.

          • Annie Jomes

No one is promoting the idea that Hillary should run again. Promoting her book, sure. Blaming Bernie, you bet, because he deserves a shit-ton of blame. But there’s no “Hillary 2020” happening.

          • Wolf Tracker

You are just dividing the party and Bernie threw his support to Clinton and campaigned for her and asked his supporters to vote for her.

            This is why she lost:

no bigger a mistake than Sanders running again. It’s time for both of them to help mentor the up and comers.

          • Wolf Tracker

He isn’t running but his supporters are the liberals and independents you need to win any national election so any candidate should be listening to what those people want.

Hillary adopted his platform too late and did not have the credibility to pull it off.

the ones who’ve been knocking on doors, making phone calls, showing up at events…FOR YEARS.

in other words…. you need them as much they need you so get off the high horse.

Fun Fact: Steve Mnuchin donated money to exactly one (1) Democrat in the last cycle – Kamala Harris, who, coincidentally, refused to prosecute Mnunchin’s OneWest over egregious foreclosure violations during the financial crisis.

“OneWest’s false filings and unauthorized conduct in the course of the foreclosure process harmed homeowners by denying them timely and important information about their foreclosures and potentially shortening the amount of time they had available to find a way to become current on their mortgage obligations,”

Harris still hasn’t explained any of this.

          • what, me worry?

Fun Fact: Harris’ office refused to investigate several CA County Prosecutors who allegedly committed several acts of proprietorial malpractice, including, but not limited to refusing to disclose exculpatory evidence, coercing confessions through physical abuse, and destroying evidence that was damaging to their case.

          • TEX Dept. of Space Tacos

No, she didn’t, on ONE case, according to your link, she was probably not even aware of the underlying issues and changed her mind when she learned of it.

“Kozinski, who in the past has spoken out about an “epidemic” of prosecutorial misconduct, asked Vienna whether Harris was aware of the case. Vienna indicated she probably was not. Kozinski told him to get her attention within 48 hours. Harris would need to take action if her office wanted to avoid an embarrassing ruling, Kozinski said.

“Make sure she understands the gravity of the situation,” Kozinski said, adding that the case “speaks very poorly for the attorney general’s office.”

Harris, a candidate for U.S. Senate, changed course. Her office decided last week not to oppose Baca’s challenge.”

    • TEX Dept. of Space Tacos

yes she has and i spanked you with your various arguments the last time. You’re just reading talking points.

      1) She said they didn’t think they had enough to win a conviction – her staff’s internal document on the subject noted it would be a long, costly, gamble of a prosecution.

      2) The prison labor thing you’re referring to had to do with a shortage of firefighters, during a fire or fire season.

  • elviouslyqueer
    • Lance Thrustwell

You know, I believe the children are our future.

  • Maybe

Kamala Harris is a Senator now, but she was Attorney General of California before that. She knows her law. She knows how to prosecute. And she knows how to fight.

Note that some rightwing trolls/Breitbart sleazes/Russian bots are already trying to undermine her. One thing they’re trying to do is attach the label “Corporate Democrat” to her ’cause, hey, it worked against Hillary Clinton.

On the Repub side, why on earth aren’t they more worried about Russia? The Russians now have the President they want. In 2018 what they’ll want, logically, is a Congress much friendlier to Trump. And they’re best chance of getting Trumpsters elected is in Red areas, not Blue. Establishment Repub incumbents should be sweating bullets about this.

    • jowgajen

Establishment Republicans are toast, they are the next entry on the endangered species list. Their base has figured out that they are spineless corporate toadies and has already shown once that they will select a circus clown over one of them.

      • Maybe

Of course they have brought it on themselves. Their decline probably started with Nixon’s Southern Strategy. They went along with that, planning on using the more ignorant and bigoted Southern denizens for votes. They never figured that the inmates would take over the asylum.

The only fix would be painful and not quick. The Dems used to be the party of Southern bigotry. Lyndon Johnson changed that when he signed the Civil Right Act, knowing that it would cost the Dems the South for generations. The Dems evolved into a far more inclusive party, which will help them someday if Dems will just turn out to vote.

    • Persistent Demme

Idiot left wing trolls are also trying to tear her down.

  • WeaselPoo

Regarding the discriminatory bail system I’ d suggest Kamala and other Dems don’t describe it as she did here because right wing and ‘independent’ voters don’t give a shit about the poor, don’t admit to being poor themselves even if they are and see anyone subject to bail as being guilty and undeserving of consideration anyway.
Instead, for broader popular support they should describe bail as a kind of tax…a ‘freedom tax’ imposed by government.

    • kirby7771

Interesting idea. Worth some consideration. Freedom tax. I like it.

    • Courser_Resistance

Partially because of ICE, partially because of homeless ‘frequent fliers’ overcrowding the jails, Denver has dropped bail for the vast majority of misdemeanors and other ‘nuisance’-type offenses. We’re also trying some ‘housing first’ projects to address our homeless population. A new apartment building with all the most crucial aid programs having offices in-house just opened here.

          • elviouslyqueer

Pedantic point of order: we either agree or we disagree. Agreeing to disagree is not only redundant, it also just sounds plain stupid.

            Carry on.

          • Randall Stephens

Just for clarification …. were you warning me about yours, or calling me out because you thought i was being pedantic?

          • Pat_Pending

Yawn. I wonder if this guy can bore Dok into a banhammer. Or at least the most tedious ‘Dear Shitferbrains’ entry ever.

We elected a black man with a pretty Muslim-y sounding name at the height of the war on terror.

We are there. There are more of us. There are more of us hitting voting age every day. All we need is to unify and vote and the GOP won’t touch the oval for a generation

      • Randall Stephens

I voted for Obama. I liked him. I tend to lean a little right, but he’s a good man. I think there were forces working against him. I also think he had some shortcomings as a leader and politician. There’s no perfect POTUS out there.

        • BigCSouthside

You are right, there is no perfect candidate or president. I’m towards the left side of the spectrum but I would happily vote for the most centrist democrat if it meant I have ideological allies in power.

We have no reason to fear this so called “political revolution of the silent majority”. We should not make decisions on what we think will appeal to a dying ideology. We have the numbers. Obama was elected handily. We’ve done this before and will do it again

      • Please tell that to my lefty friend who swear to God told me the other day that Hillary would’ve been just as bad and the Democrats screwed over Bernie. Russian propaganda — It wasn’t just for rightwingnuts.

      • spangled

we were also partially able to elect him because no one wanted to vote for a republican after the clown show bush presidency.

i got a feeling that after Trump’s presidency, we’ll be able to elect a trans latina lesbian muslim woman.

            Go get ’em, girl!

      • And fix (get rid of) the electoral college system.

        • Randall Stephens

          And replace it with what?

          • BigCSouthside

A popular vote like every other office in this country. It’s good enough for governors, why not president?

The EC failed in its primary purpose last year.

          • Randall Stephens

My understanding is that the electoral college was to uphold the principles of basic fairness and representative democracy….. a straight swap for the popular vote? My state would never see a Presidential candidate. there would be no reason for them to campaign there. I’m fine with doing something different. It needs to uphold the above ideals. And the public should be informed as to why it’s better.

          • BigCSouthside

The EC provides disproportionate weight to voters in sparse areas. It was partially a compromise to slave states (where a big ass chunk of the population wasn’t actually considered people) to alleviate the fears that the north would dominate by simple force of majority.

We don’t have that problem anymore. If you want the votes, go earn then. Free market of ideas. If you can’t win elections because you can’t muster enough votes, evolve, or die.

          • Rags

No, the Electoral College was designed to prevent a despotic and unqualified leader from being elected President. In theory, cooler heads (i.e. rich white landowners) would temper the antidemocratic ardor of the unwashed masses should it come to that. How’s that system workin’ for u???

          • Randall Stephens

It seems like a simple swap for the popular vote would set up a situation where Presidential candidate only campaigned in California, New York and Texas. That seems undemocratic to me…

          • Rags

Hmmm yes it’s undemocratic to go where the most voters are. Riiiiight. True that Iowa and New Hampshire hospitality industries would lose a short term boost every 4 years but aren’t we all kind of sick of listening to the same maple syrup suckers and corncob bottom wipers every single time we have an election? (Oh, since you are new here, that is snark – I have nothing against New Hampshirians or Iowans, I am sure some of them are very good people.

          • ryp

That makes no sense, with a national popular vote, there would be no advantage to winning big states, there wouldn’t be EC votes to win. As it is candidates only campaign in swing states. A national vote would actually have candidates campaigning everywhere.

Whatever. I enjoy the conversation. I think we (people in general) need to be talking with each other instead of at each other’s throats. I think I’m probably most accurately a lower-case “L” libertarian. Live and let live….

I think our world (generally speaking) is far more harmonious than we’re being told.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

Folks are tough on libertarians here. Just so you know.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

The “I got mine, so fuck everyone else” libertarian attitude pretty much goes against everything I believe in. If that’s your credo, it won’t go well.

          • Randall Stephens

I’m not sure what you mean by that….

          • alwayspunkindrublic

It means that most-if not all-libertarians tend to be wealthy, white, and entitled; the Pauls…Rand, Ryan etc., Silicon Valley tech-bros. With an unbreakable foundation of affluence and privilege, it’s easy to sit back and fantasize about a juvenile social utopia where there are no laws and everyone does the right thing, just ‘cuz. ..because everything will always work out to their benefit. Their money insulates them from the harsher dog-eat-dog realities of what this system would devolve into if it ever came into being.

          • LeftyProud

            Well put.

          • Celtic_Gnome

I knew a guy who was against handicapped parking spaces because the government shouldn’t be telling private businesses what they should be doing with their parking spaces. When pressed about how this would adversely impact people who need those spaces just to be able to get to the businesses, he announced that everyone would leave spaces open closest to the entrance for the handicapped because people were basically good.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

Yeah…handicap spaces, who needs ’em? They were invented because we needed to give more work to people who paint lines in parking lots. This is exactly why I referred to libertarianism as juvenile. There was a douche here who ran against Gabby Giffords some years back; he was against any kind of government regulation. “People need to be personally responsible for the quality of the food they buy to make sure it isn’t tainted”. He almost won. Then she got shot and now we have someone only marginally more sane.

          • Lance Thrustwell

People – absent egregious social conditions like slavery or a rigid caste system – are generally more harmonious than their governments. But on this here blog, we spend our time focusing on politics, so the divisiveness and rancor inherent in that system tends to infect our discourse.

Plus, the current occupants of the White House and the GOP in general are such a disaster that it’s difficult for most of us to muster any sympathy for right-of center viewpoints these days.

          • Randall Stephens

I wouldn’t call myself a Trump supporter. That’s who’s in office right now. I want to be supportive when he does right. And call it out when he’s wrong. • Funny – the only person from Warner Robins I ever knew was my buddy Frank’s 14 year old cousin Kristi. All us 12 year old boys were terrified of her because supposedly she wanted to give us all blow jobs.

  • Wolf Tracker

Kamala is great but she’s no Hillary!

More like Obama and that is a good thing.

    • Right now she bears very little resemblance to either. 2024 would be the right time, unless the Democrats can win the Senate next year and she gets some legislation passed sponsoring it.

      • Rags

She can never pass enough legislation to make up for having a vajayjay. Also too, please advise which legislation 4-5 sponsored before his election. (And while you are at it, please advise which legislation 4-5 sponsored since his election….)

        • Times are different. What he needed for getting elected is not what she needs to get elected. But since you asked, S. 1513, S.906, S.3757, and S.2125.

And sponsored since his election? He does have the ACA.

What will Harris run on today against Drumpf?

          • Rags

4-5 is Trump. (According to Trevor Noah, 4-5 is South African slang for penis and Trump is the 45th President and I can’t bring myself to type T….p unless the situation is dire). And are you saying he sponsored the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Establishment Act among others? And that he is responsible for the ACA? I haz a confuse.

          • I was comparing Obama to Harris because that is what I thought you were asking for since they were/are neophytes when they first emerged on the national scene and created some flutter.

Drumpf is already President. Making a pitch that Harris is better than Drumpf for 2020? Wasted on me, you have to convince some of the ones who voted for him; maybe just the 12% of the BernieBros.

What I am saying that she’ll likely not be ready by 2020, and if she is trashed, that is a promising candidate lost for 2024. A photogenic, well-spoken, educated Democrat is not going to be left alone by the Republicans to be treated kindly, and Obama was treated with utter contempt.

Being a woman and black, she’ll be subject to far more racism and misogyny that either Obama/Hillary faced. The Democrats do not have anything to counter that, and going high when they go low will result in a bad beating.

The fact that Obama was no more experienced does not cut it. He was different, he did have the benefit of running against a non-incumbent, and he did gain because of Democrats holding at least one branch of Congress the couple years before the election, and a financial disaster against the ruling party worked for him.

It is much different today, and her work is a lot harder. Pointing that out is not a strike against her candidacy, it is a caution that a promising candidate may be dealt a nasty blow forever. She has a lot of work to do. More than that the Democrats have a lot of work to do.

And no, the only alternative to what I said above “so then, we give up?”

          • kareemachan

            Gotta keep your numbers straight…

          • Yes, also gotta keep the context.

          • miss_grundy

People keep saying Obama was a political neophyte. I guess they keep forgetting that he was a state senator in Illinois before running for the U.S. Senate. And running for state office in Illinois is no cake walk.

          • I like being squeezed in from both sides where Harris is simultaneously no worse than Obama, and Obama was more qualified than Harris politically, and that I should stop insulting him.

Which makes it easy to express the simple point: Obama doing things and Harris doing the same things or not enough things have little in the way of precedence which is why I think 2020 is too early for her to run and could hurt her future.

Apparently, that is just too much negativity, because of look, she has one resolution under her belt and three legislations that have a 30% chance of passing! Also, Bernie has nothing more, so…

It has been a LONG time since a candidate for President ran, lost, and then won. The political landscape has changed dramatically, and both the major parties have learned how not to let someone like that resurrect himself or herself. But, because we like Kamala Harris, and would prefer her to Drumpf, she’ll get elected.

Any caution against that gets a statue removed.

    • Jay Hansen

Her behavior in regard to medicare for all could be a game-changer, at least in my book.

  • She needs a few years or a major legislation that she sponsors to pass, whichever comes first.

A 2020 run could spell doom otherwise for her career.

    • jesterpunk

She could name a post office and recognize California as a state, that seems to be good enough to be a serious contender.

      • So, let’s see that legislation, then. If the bar is that low, it should be no problem.

        • jesterpunk
          • One resolution passed, and three legislations pending, with the best one having a 30% chance.

        • Bitter Scribe

To me his biggest “problem” was that he was slow to realize the depth of assholery he would be dealing with. And I’m not sure if that had anything to do with his lack of experience.

          • Mintie

I agree. Pretty sure that was his natural faith in the goodness of humanity that delayed that realization.

Yes. This. It was why, as a supporter of Bernie Sanders (hipster moment: before he was cool), I felt he shouldn’t have run for president. He was far more useful in the Senate.

If the years of Obama taught us anything, it should be that the presidency means very little, if you don’t have at least one house of Congress. We need good senators and representatives. Maybe we should take a play out of the GOP playbook, run a governor for president, or some clueless schmuck entertainer that people like.

      • I guess that is all it takes.

    • SineDie

In normal times, I might be inclined to agree with you. In normal times, we have the luxury watching candidates season themselves. But these are not normal times.

I think she has a lot going for her. Smart, charismatic and apparently a fighter. Warren should stay in the Senate. She is doing fine work there.

      • Here’s the scorecard today in 2017:

        WH: GOP
        House: Majorly GOP
        Senate: Narrowly GOP
        SCOTUS: Majorly GOP
        26 states: ALL GOP
        34 states: GOP governors
        70/99 legislatures: GOP

You are right, these are not normal times. There is a LOT of work to do before a Democratic President can be successful. He or she will fight it all the way even if he/she is lucky to get elected. And be stymied so badly that she’d a one-termer.

Till you have Democrats with spine and with control of something, it is a recipe for Ossoffian disasters. And in her case, of a promising politician.

The work needs to be done in getting Congress Democratic. And as bad as the GOP fuckwaddery has been and as bad as Drumpf is, check the projections

There are only 10 seats up for grabs in the House: toss ups. In the Senate there are 7. And the Democrats look likelier under that scenario to lose further in 2018!!

        https://cookpolitical.com/ratings/house-race-ratings
        https://cookpolitical.com/ratings/senate-race-ratings

Now, should they somehow work their butts off and pull off an upset and regain the Senate, THEN she has a platform to propose and get some bold initiatives passed. Sure, they won’t become law, but she will be heard and be visible, and she can build on that.

I never thought of Warren as anything but a Sandersian mould senator

  • cats530

No, she can’t be POTUS. She wasn’t born in the US, but on some other planet. Plus, she’s a Feminazi! Rush said so. Think of how horrible and unpatriotic it would be to elect such a person! /s

    • CindyinEncinitas

She will cause all sorts of catastrophes. Locusts, frogs, hail, humidity…

      • cats530

Is that what Pat Robertson said? It must be true then.

      • H0mer0

too late, I already have a dog and cat living under one roof.

        • CindyinEncinitas

          Heretic!

    • Cat Cafe for the Prosecution

She’s been being viciously attacked, demeaned, and diminished since she became Senator. Our first priority really needs to be to force Twitter and FB to step up and get rid of Putin’s vicious mouthpieces and trolls.

      • Pilotshark

well it seems all you have to do is come up with 200K, that seems to be what the St. Pete Russian troll brigade did.

        • Well, 200K won’t do it any more. But 200K tweeters will definitely help.

    • toughsister

Who? Klobuchar? Born in Plymouth, MN.

      • kbbaldwin2

Sure? Have you seen her long form birth certificate?

  • Mavenmaven

    Warren/Harris/Gililibrand any two is fine

    • Arolpin

And I wouldn’t mind seeing Cory Booker as a VP. Yes, I’m sure that will piss off the purity ponies, but he actually appears to want to do things. Plus, I don’t think there are many deplorables who would vote for a D woman, but not a black man.

      • SineDie

I’ll tell ya, Cory is not quite my cup of tea. A lot of hat, but I’m still waiting to see the cattle.

    • Internet Hitler

      But her femails!

    • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

Warren doesn’t make me entirely secure about her commitment to the Democratic Party.

    • redblack

meh on warren. she’s a lightning rod for both wall street and freepers. that’s an uphill battle barefoot in the snow both ways kind of thing.

      • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

Too much pissing on Democrats for my taste, also.

    • lilith

Imagine not just getting to vote for a woman but getting to CHOOSE BETWEEN women in the primaries? My brain might explode at the very thought. And I would definitely be Harris/Gillibrand over Warren.

  • Zyxomma

My last headphones died, so I can’t watch the videos yet. Later. However, I urge the entire Wonketariat to focus on EVERY election, every year (primary for NY City Council is coming Tuesday, and there are five Democrats to choose from), ESPECIALLY 2018’s midterms. That said, I adore both my junior Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, and that great junior Senator from the other coast, Kamala Harris.

    • redblack

yep. all politics is local, except for the presnit election.

on a side note, seattle is going to have a woman mayor for the first time in 90 fucking years. the top two vote-getters in the primary here were both democratic women.

      • Zyxomma

NYC still hasn’t had one. Nothing but men; one of them gay, one of them black, many of them execrable.

        • redblack

          giuliani in drag doesn’t count?

    • HazooToo

I’m sorry, but you can’t keep Gillibrand. Not past 2020 anyway. I want her to be Harris’ VP.

      • Zyxomma

        Fine by me.

    • Sophie McMillan

we have our election in WA this year. Working hard for our local Dem. The opp GOP’er is supported by a Kock company and is out spreading her lies and falsehoods. Because she has said she likes the job DT is doing, i think she is going to lose.

      • Zyxomma

Best of luck to WA Dems.

I can’t believe I got through 61 years on this Earth without knowing that bail bondsmen keep the 10 percent you pay them for bail. I’m glad I know that now, in case I ever get into serious trouble.

    • Mintie

It’s considered the fee they charge for providing your bail money for you. And that’s only if you don’t miss your date/your POS child skips out and you run the risk of losing your house you put up for collateral because you don’t even have the $2K necessary for the fee.

  • vanmojo

Personally, I am still holding out for Warren-Franken 2020, but if that happens, then Sen. Harris will be one of the most *kickass* U.S. Attorneys General ever.

I think it’s going to take a candidate that isn’t Donald Trump.

    • uniquename72

When you go low, we go high.

When you vote for an Iraq War cheerleader with no scruples to speak of, who still had a “deeply held belief” that marriage is between one man and one women in 2013, we stay home on election day.

Perhaps Clinton supporters won’t choose the candidate who polls lower than any (other) Republican candidate in 2020. Wouldn’t that be nice?

      • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

Shove it up your ass, pigfucker. Enjoying munching your Trump taint? That’s what you chose.

      • miss_grundy

And Berniebrats, like you, will stay home again if you don’t get your way or you will vote for a Jill Stein. It is no wonder so many of us just shake our heads at your kind.

      • SineDie

        Hey there!

        • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

Bernie Sanders is an evil pigfucking sack of shit. He was also actively working to destroy Obama’s legacy when he was working to pull down Hillary. What a piece of shit.

          • Truthiness2U

What kills me is ‘ZOMG!! Hillary said mild (and true) things in her book about Bernie that were negative, she is destroying our UNITY!/PARTY!/CHANCE TO SAVE THE WORLD!11!’ She’s horrible!

Meanwhile, Bernie has been crapping on the Dem Party since the election, as he has forever as he’s a classic “both sides are the same!” bullshitter. His acolytes that are part of the horrible “Unity Commission” or whatever the DNC stupidly did, are fucking Dems over more/still. He is doing so while flogging HIS book, and fucking crickets.

This is why we lost. We bent over backwards to Bernie and his BoBs, and time and time again, they shiv us in the back. They’re the ones that helped us lose to begin with, then they blame us for the loss, and not only won’t take responsibility, but blame it all on us.

            pffft.

          • Lefty Wright

Right. I find it the height of hypocrisy for Bernie to have an interview and imply that Hillary is just displaying the symptoms of a woman scorned and blaming him for her loss. That takes a lot of balls from the guy who lost to her by millions of votes and spent most of his campaign whining about how unfair Clinton and the DNC were treating him. Then evolving that to repeated claims that the primary was rigged. And as of election day, pinning all the blame on Clinton and moderate Democrats.

Not only is that an example of being two faced, it smacks of misogyny by pulling the old, tired trope of the neurotic, scorned woman. And it also ignores the constant barrage of attacks on Clinton by his supporters long after she had won the nomination. Something he never publicly condemned other than one mention of her emails in February 2016. Also missing was any admission that his own staff suspected Russian or East European tampering with the Sanders social media to harm Clinton as far back as July 2016.

Finally, any effort she made at the end of the campaign was useless due to the fact the GOP, the media, and the Berniebots were locked in on the treasonous letter by James Comey sent in late October. A visit to Michigan, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin would have resulted in headlines of “Clinton visits Michigan, denies any new incriminating emails. Trump calls her a liar. Chaffetz is concerned, promises to open new investigation. Comey has no comment”. Like a black hole, it kept any positive message about Clinton for seeing any daylight.

          • That takes a lot of balls from the guy who lost to her by millions of votes and spent most of his campaign whining about how unfair Clinton and the DNC were treating him.

            This

        • Bill O’Neil

Bernie told his supporters to vote for Clinton, so STFU with that Bernie bashing bull shit!!!

          • SineDie

This is not Bernie-bashing. This is me being nice to Sanders.

The Sanders people who voted for Clinton were Clinton voters, to whom I am grateful. The Sanders people who voted for Trump are Trump voters, full stop.

Sanders needed to get out after AZ. History will not be kind to Bernie, and neither will the Democrats.

          • Bill O’Neil

Quite the contrary. History will show Sanders was our best hope in the last 70 years to carry on with FDR’s New Deal type of progressiveness. Hillary’s new book will show her as a “sour grapes” loser, which will be her legacy.

          • SineDie

Running out of typing room here. What do you have in mind when you mention FDR’s “New Deal type of progressive essay?

          • Bill O’Neil

For starters, Bernie wants to build on and expand Social Security and Medicare and minimum wage.

          • SineDie

Putting candidates aside for a moment, let’s see where we disagree on anything of substance.

1Medicare for all. First, people who say they are for single-payer (as in my) and who say they are for Medicare for all are not saying the same thing. I don’t think Bernie Sanders did a very good job of explaining some things about Medicare, because it makes a great big difference to the cost of national healthcare if the scheme is Medicare as opposed to what I refer to as single-payer. Medicare has premiums for coverage beyond hospitalization. You pay a premium for outpatient coverage and another premium for drug coverage. The drug coverage is lousy. It has something called “the doughnut hole.” After Medicare has paid out $2400 for drugs, there is no coverage at all until you are out of pocket over $5000.

            Medicare also only pays

          • Bill O’Neil

Nothing of any benefit will get thru this congress. That is why we have to vote the Republiklans out of power. Medicaid for all would be good except in lots of places you can’t get a doctor to except a Medicaid patient. I’m on Medicare so I’m very familiar with all the points you mentioned. It would be a good first step and it will be hard to even get that first step. Medicare would be better for people with pre-existing conditions than the old insurance based system before the ACA. I spent most of my life at the mercy of insurance companies. I once got a quarterly insurance premium notice of $12004.00. Needless to say I was without insurance after that notice.

He went through the motions of “campaigning” for Hillary with 1/10 the zeal that he did smearing her and feeding attack lines to the GOP. His goal has always been to shit on Democrats.

Paper trail? What voting machine vendor?

          • SineDie

            Official voter data. Voting machine?

          • PRW

Generally speaking elections in most US states employ a voting machine that tabulates the cast votes. Some of these include paper audit logs, some do not. Most of these are produced by a small number of vendors and have a disappointing history of systems security problems, which information security experts have been criticizing for about twenty years now, to a general chorus of apathy or derision. The point I am getting at, is that any analysis or argument about ‘official voter data’ is rooted in an assumption that the reported data accurately reflects the actual votes cast by the voters, and that assumption is not really all that well-founded.

      • Wojciech

        Oh, for fuck’s sake.

      • We don’t need you. More people voted for Clinton than Trump. We lost due to an electoral issue and it seems increasingly likely, Russian interference.

We don’t need you. Continue to pout and stomp your feet and hold your breath. We do not need you.

  • Charon_69

you want this to not come up again in 4-8 years right? why not go chronologically so you can hold the damn white house for 24 years: Biden, Klobuchar, Booker, Harris (do I have that right?)

    • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

      That’s 32 years, isn’t it?

    • redblack

“…so you can hold the damn white house for 24 years: Biden, Klobuchar, Booker, Harris (do I have that right?)”

      no, you don’t.

      that would be 32 years.

      • Charon_69

Ah hell, make it 40 then and put Warren after Joe-might take that long to clean up after he-who-shall-not-be-named

        • redblack

we’ll nominate our own slate, thanks. but if you want to join the democratic party and help elect progressives, the door is open.

          • Charon_69

Being Canadian that’s unlikely and possibly not allowed? Since the article was akin to picking a fantasy sportsball roster at this point, no harm submitting a lineup right? Here’s hoping you stop feeding on each other so it works out better for you in 3+ years…

          • redblack

the article alerted readers to an interview with kamala harris. that’s part of what this site does.

admittedly, evan was baiting purity trolls, and he landed a few, it seems. he even snagged foreign ones with little-to-no actual skin in the game!

          • Charon_69

Actually it says let’s elect Kampala now and Let’s have a special election; the comments then included a number of ‘fantasy draft’ suggestions.
I’ve actually been posting here for a couple years now and have never encountered the pomposity you’re displaying tonight

          • redblack

actually, this whole conversation started with your math error.

          • Charon_69

which you felt compelled to weigh in on; while we’re being pedantic you might note there’s no suggestion of dual terms for any of them so if say Joe and Booker each only did 4 years the math works…
What it really boiled down to was you misinterpreting my post desiring some forward thinking and wishing for a D lock on the WH for a generation as…kvetching??
So, comprehension? asking before assuming next time?
Your comments history shows a similar cycle of flying off the handle then recanting; I sincerely wish you well as this isn’t what I’d prefer to be doing with the evening but I will not be labeled or insulted by you or anyone else for putting together a wish list of potential consecutive D presidents

          • redblack

you have to admit that your first post sounded sarcastic, right? like there’s a conspiratorial DNC heirarchy?

no one here wants dynasty – political, familial, aristocratic, or otherwise. biden served his purpose very well as senator and VP. not gonna be POTUS. we’ll see who else shakes out. harris is as good a choice as any.

when you said “hold the damn white house for 24 years” were you bitching about dems being politically weak, america’s government being heirarchical, or what?

          • Charon_69

There was an article today where Biden’s daughter said he would consider a run in 2020, and honestly in terms of healing a 4 year stint by ‘Uncle Joe’ might be the best thing to hope for.
It’s apparent that with only a 2 party system one side is going to just keep obstructing or undoing the others efforts which leads to this: every viable outfit has a succession plan-base it on whatever criteria but stop getting infatuated with the latest ‘crush’-although anyone else would be an improvement at this point.
I can tell you there is value in having that long term stability at the top and I believe after T is gone the US will be hungry for it.

What I said was it might take that long to repair the damage caused by this administration.
Any reading of bitching, kvetching, sarcasm, trolling (seriously?) is in the eye of the beholder and I’m really tired of it.

          • Charon_69

            Also too, for better or worse the whole damn globe has ‘skin in the game’ in this case;
The only mentions of a ‘purity test’ have been yours and as I’m checking the boxes off:
            -hostility to outsiders, particularly foreigners
-wanting to limit input to only those with like views
-acting as arbiter, gatekeeper and condescending drunken 6 yr old
I’m wondering if you realize the overlap on a ven diagram between you and a trump voter resembles the recent eclipse?

          • redblack

that’s some funny shit. i’m in no way an arbiter or gatekeeper; i don’t share a lot of the regular wonkers’ sand box mentality; and most of the regulars here would probably dump me off as a purity pony if i was stupid enough to post my deepest and darkest. look at my short posting history. it’s open.

like you, they haven’t a clue what i’m about, but they know what they think. i’m just a regular old blue-collar dude who has been voting straight-ticket democrat for 30 years.

and you can’t vote here, but you felt compelled to kvetch about a post about an interview with kamala harris. i inferred that you’re bitching about democrats “annointing” someone whom some in the far left of the party consider impure and “corporate,” far ahead of the 2020 dem primaries.

i think you got baited. hook, line, and sinker.

here’s my advice: learn when to ignore the bait.

            have a great weekend.

          • redblack

i might be a drunk, but you’re off on the age by decades.

and i’ll defend to the death your right to say whatever it is you’re saying.

            especially on someone else’s server.

          • Maybe

I was hoping for Jerry Brown so that someone could ask Jello Biafra the obvious follow-up questions; also, he’d have some excellent campaign jingles ready to go!

  • Portia McGonagal

Been watching her since she ran for AG and called her as a potential Presidential candidate then. We have got some good potential candidates. Loved Joe B as VP and wish him well but he and that guy from VT can just move along.

    • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

Biden may or may not be a major contender, you never know, but he would be delightful. The other guy, not so much, at all.

      • Joe is old. He’ll be 78 in 2020. I think it’s time for the younger generation to take charge of the Democratic Party, the older generation hasn’t been doing so well on the national stage lately.

        • Maybe

I don’t disagree, but I could see Biden as the Presidential candidate with an up-and-coming progressive as the Vice. That would give them some useful training.

          • Could live with that, but pretty sure Joe is ok without doing it

    • Sakonyachen

I really hope it’s just a brocialist fantasy that Sanders would run again.

  • A Bashful Nobody

    I like Gavin Newsome also.

    • Shaydee

      Me too.

    • Gavin is going to be the next governor of California. As in, pretty much a shoe-in, the Republicans are going to run somebody against him but there’s basically no chance they’ll get anybody elected. He might run in 2024 though if Trump is re-selected President by the Electoral College in 2020.

Whoa – what? She’s a vagina-American? Like Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Hillary and Chelsea Clinton have vaginas? Don’t the Dems realize that if they are never supposed to run another woman again because the Republicans will be mean and if they collectively stand up for a woman candidate (*shudder*) racist hillbillies in red states won’t vote for them anymore?

        C’mon y’all, smarten up.

          • TheFamilyThalamusPersists

Ugh. That totally ruined my nice Sunday morning.

        • Sakonyachen

Not sure Wasserman-Schultz’s problem was her gender. Although, I’m sure it was with some people.

      • Keith Wilson

She has fallopian tubes because she is a womb-man.

    • Maybe

Agreed. She needs to totally stick to Twitter since that’s such an amazing communications tool for a politician.

    • Sakonyachen

Emails? Has she been to BENGHAZI!!!11!!? Has she ever been shrill? What about her husband? Won’t anyone think of her husband?! I sincerely hope she doesn’t have a foundation she put her name on. It could be selling kids into sex slavery from a basement that literally doesn’t exist. Does she wear pantsuits? So many important issues to consider.

  • Shaydee

    Don’t see why not!

      Not why see not daily?

      • Shaydee

          • SineDie

It’s called a kibbitz. Theoretically a kibbitz between two good kibbitzers could go on forever.

  • NotConvinced

I loved when she made the Keebler Elf wet his pants by being so intense. She is intense.

  • Crooked Paul

I voted for her. I’m very pleased to be represented in the Senate by such a smart, strong woman.

Feinstein is OK, but I’ll be glad when she retires and we can elect a more progressive Democrat.

    • Maybe

I’m also a Californian and totally agree, with one exception. Feinstein has a huge amount of seniority and that amounts to power in the Senate. I will be sorry to lose that. But it will be worth it.

      • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

It has been pointed out that challenging her, if she chooses to run, will be a huge distraction when the priority is retaking both houses. I am inclined to find that a valid point.

        • Maybe

Good point. So far Feinstein is acting as though she’s going to run–she’s raising money–but there’s no way to tell. Politicians try to hold on to power as long as they can and I doubt she’ll announce her retirement in advance.

      • akita96th

Feinstein does not use her power for good..She still represents corporate over citizens and does not even recognize single payer… She is a rich woman and she is your status quo democrat…She need to be replaced by a real democrat…A newer model.

        • SDGeoff3

Well look who she married. An investment banker.

        • Maybe

I don’t entirely disagree, but I think your take is too black and white.

Feinstein votes more progressively than a Repub would. She is a real Democrat, having been an active member of the party for a long time. The fact that she is not extremely liberal does not make her not a Dem. And even Sanders has been known to support corporations over citizens; that’s what career politicians do.

The party needs everyone it can get. Even Blue Dogs help provide the head count needed for a party to control the House or Senate.

As for the “need” to replace her with a newer model, that depends on who the newer model is. Being young is not, in itself, a qualification for office.

I do hope Feinstein retires soon, but she is not altogether bad. Seeking perfection in politics is not a high-return activity.

    • Toledo Window Box

Feinstein is NOT okay. She enabled George W. Bush, and she’s a pansy on Trump.

  • CB

I’d like to contribute the perception from SF Fantasy Land.

Ms. Harris is perceived as conservative here, at least by some people, because she is opposed to the legalisation of sex work.

I think most of us still like her.

    • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

I have a feeling legalizing sex work is not really going to be a platform issue in 2020.

      • Maybe

Well, not the Dem platform. No one knows and God is just guessing about what the Repub platform will be.

        • Weird Fishes

Jeebus and Goebels are working on it 24×7.

          White folks gonna loooove it.

        • ahughes798

I’m still trying to suss out what the Dem platform will be.

          • Maybe

It will probably be similar to previous ones. It’s pretty much an advertising tool for campaigns. I do hope they have the guts to add Medicare for All this time. We’ll see. A lot has to do with who the candidate is.

      • CB

“I have a feeling legalizing sex work is not really going to be a platform issue in 2020.”

        You never know!

If there’s anyone in the Trump family who deserves to have her work decriminalised, it’s Melania.

    • Maybe

I don’t think that being conservative on one issue makes a person wholly conservative.

In a way the term is a misnomer. Most people are conservative on some issues, liberal on others, and somewhere in between on the rest.

Harris is currently championing a bill that would make sure poor people don’t end up staying in jail because they can’t make bail. That is true and useful liberality.

      • CB

“I don’t think that being conservative on one issue makes a person wholly conservative.”

The meaning of the word “conservative” has now morphed into something closer to “criminally insane”.

I should have specified that I was using the original meaning that it had many decades ago. Sorry about that.

Her stated opposition to sex work legalisation was that it would lead to more sex slavery… but it never seemed logical to me that someone engaging in a legal act would fear going to the police because he or she was being trafficked… it always smelled to me like Ms. Harris was carefully triangulating for a move into a national spotlight… which she has now successfully made!

I would love for her to be president.

        • Maybe

You could be right about legalizing sex work, but Harris does have a lot of experience in the legal field and I can’t dismiss her opinion offhand. I just don’t know enough about the issue.

I will say that laws seem to be tools of the powerful just as often, or more often, than they are protectors of the weak. And laws don’t always have their intended effect.

        • sarafina

“The meaning of the word “conservative” has now morphed into something closer to “criminally insane”.”

          I concur.

  • WhoCheckedRussia’sVoterID

I know this is inappropriate. She is a strong, powerful woman who has earned my respect and admiration. We need to listen to her. But I am a single man. Realities cannot be denied. She is lovely.

    • Toledo Window Box

Why is it inappropriate? A good looking man can ride that to great success in many fields including politics, why not a woman?

      • WhoCheckedRussia’sVoterID

Because sometimes we are too quick to focus on a woman’s exterior. Depending on things, it can come across as belittling. And its different with guys. You might get a little jokey jokey with the Paul Ryan gym bullshit, but its clear that its nonsense. People go a little too far with women. The more I write this the more I feel guilty for posting that.

        • Sakonyachen

Don’t feel bad. Women still like compliments. They just don’t care for stuff like “nice rack”or “dat ass doh!”. It’s not like you commented on her cup size or something.

          • WhoCheckedRussia’sVoterID

Yeah…sometimes imma idiot who thinks too much. And I’m raising two girls. Sometimes perspective and I have a tenuous relationship.

          • Sakonyachen

Having one stepdaughter(just because I can’t stand her doesn’t mean I don’t love her) changed my perspective on how I treat women. I can’t imagine what having two daughters would be like. At least you allow yourself the possibility of fault. Not a bad thing to do, more people should work on it.

          • Boscoe

I hear ya, it’s what happens when you actually have some respect for the feelings of others like some kind of dirty librul. ;)

    • TheFamilyThalamusPersists

I’ll take it one step further- she is beautiful. Edit: and I’m an old CIS, white, married mom.

    • ahughes798

There is nothing wrong with noticing someone is handsome or pretty. As long as you’re not leering and slobbering, it’s perfectly natural for humans to notice other attractive humans. I’ve been with Mr. 798 for 20 years, but if Chris Hemsworth or Kate Winslet walked by, I’d notice! I’m very happy with Mr. 798, but I’m not blind, or dead.

  • mrsjohnmiltonrocks

I knew of her , but had never heard her interviewed before. She seems smart, articulate, and likeable. Definitely want to hear more from her.

    • TheFamilyThalamusPersists

I’m a democrat from California, the Bay Area. No one should seriously expect Kamala Harris to do anything but grandstand. In spite of SCN Strategies machine trying to polish the product, the closer you look at her history, the slimier things get. Save everyone’s time and energy and look elsewhere. #showpony

    • SineDie

You wanna flesh that out a bit?

    • Red State Pinko

Examples, please?? A Google search for “slimy Kamala Harris” (never mind #showpony*) does not yield particularly helpful results. Do I smell a troll? I like her, but don’t know much about her. Is there anything seriously amiss in her past that the Repigs could use against her?

    • NeoliberalBanksterCaptainHowdy

Don’t think so, mostly attacks from the left, which are already in full gear. “Didn’t prosecute Mnuchin” (which is a canard) is already being uncritically referenced in the MSM, like “her emails”.

    • GavinVolaire

      She’s a Democrat.

  • GavinVolaire

Kamala Harris sounds like the next Hillary Clinton. She has the pandering (I’m so mad I didn’t put Bootsy Collins on my playlist because that’s how down I am with my black constituents!) down pat while simultaneously exposing herself as the fraud she is (you haven’t spent enough time on spotify to be mad about it if you don’t realize you can change your playlist).

I’ll bet she has a bottle of hot sauce in her purse, too.

  • GavinVolaire

No, Evan, you don’t get to pick the President. The President was elected into office. Stop crying, Evan. Evan. Evan, stop cry — Evan. Evan? OK, look sweetie, we will go for ice cream later, OK, Evan? But you have to stop crying because only big boys get to eat ice cream…..

    • Boscoe

But only ONE scoop because only Drumph gets two.

  • smitallica

Sorry, guys. The Berners have already declared her too corporate. Or centrist. Or corncob. Or something. We Democrats just have to accept that our party is only allowed to nominate someone who refuses to join the party.

    • Wookie Monster

The Bernie Bros will be just as successful in deciding whom the democrats nominate in 2020 as they were in 2016.

    • peteywheats

This whole “attacking and dividing the left because we’re mad at about half the people who vote in democratic primaries” thing y’all keep doing is not helpful.

      • smitallica

But the “we’re still mad our hero Bernie didn’t win the nomination so we’re stomping our feet and repeating ad nauseam that the primary was rigged and rejecting every single person the party our hero refuses to join puts forward because they’re just not as angelically pure as Bernie and keep threatening to take our ball and bat and form our OWN party without you corporate assholes so THERE” thing is?

  • Susie Lochary

California is most likely gonna move our primary election from June to March and that means Kamala just might have a real shot if she decides to run. KAMALA HARRIS 2020

  • kloewent

How old is that Kennedy kid?? We need a red head in the White house!!

  • Blaise_P

I really want to like Kamala Harris. I’m just having issues with that whole not-prosecuting Steve Mnuchin and OneWest Bank, who seem to have fraudulently foreclosed on 80K Californians’ homes. I’m sure there are two sides to this, but Harris has maintained radio silence. Perhaps wiser and more informed persons can fill in the blanks: I’m no political purist, I’ve accepted worse from politicians’ records (e.g. Iraq War vote) but until this gets cleared up to my satisfaction, I simply can’t succumb to squeeful talk about how and points have proven about how delightful Kamala Harris is. This one point is sticking out like a turd in a punchbowl.

    • TEX Dept. of Space Tacos

      i appreciate your open mind.

she addressed it, saying that as AG, she declined to prosecute. If you surf the lefty blogs, you’ll see a reference to a memo her staff drew up. Read the memo.

they felt they OneWest committed crimes, but the stories that quote the memo never seem to mention a part near the bottom saying it would be a long, costly, time-intensive process that would face areas of law never addressed before. (my guess, meaning they would have a bitch of time to prove it AND the thing would be on appeal forever).

IIRC, they had already negotiated with OneWest to start treating current mortgage holders better, but I may be wrong. But if it is true, it’s possible it was just too much trouble, while they were already getting OneWest to work things out with the people affected.

      • Kenshin0011

Is it not true that Kamala Harris was the only 2016 democrat to receive donor money from Mnuchin in 2016? (*spoiler* – it’s true)

        • Dept. of Space Tacos

I know she recieved money, not sure whether only.

          And it was $2k.

Was it before or after she declined to prosecute?

          • Kenshin0011
          • Dept. of Space Tacos

            sooo, no quid pro quo.
And he gave it…did she solicit it? did she return it? (She REALLY should have returned it for appearances sake, mostly because I keep fucking hearing about this makes her CORRUPT!)

          • Kenshin0011

The money is irrelevant anyway, because she’s still wrong for not moving forward with an investigation in the first place. Her office found hundreds of instances of fraudulent activity and recommended further steps, but she declined.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

again, if you read the internal memo – they said it was going to be difficult, long, expensive and risky (given the “novel” legal issues.)

If she was already getting modifications/refunds for the afflicted, I can’t blame her much.
But that’s a good debate that can be had.

The “she didn’t prosecute him, she’s CORRUPT!” is not accurate or beneficial.

          • Kenshin0011

Also, not everything falls under “quid pro quo”. It’s a clear “thank you” bribe. It honestly could even be vindictive on his part, being a small amount, and how could one not know it looks bad when she’s the ONLY dem he gifted? She is foolish for accepting it.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

eh, I disagree – but this has been a civil conversation and I’m doing other things, so I’m happy to agree to disagree.
