The “Free Speech” rally in Boston has already “ended early” following thousands and thousands of counter-protesters arriving and vastly outnumbering the hundreds (maybe) who actually showed up to rally for a definition of Free Speech that does not appear anywhere in the Constitution.

Even before today — several prominent speakers, like noted garbage person Gavin McInnes, pulled out of the rally and pretended that it had been canceled when it hadn’t been.

The Washington Post interviewed one young fella who showed up at the rally, and wanted everyone to know that he was not a racist:

One rally attendee, Luke St. Onge, a young man wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat and GOP T-shirt, said he came even though he knew it might be attended by white supremacist groups whose views he said he does not agree with.

“I definitely wouldn’t associate myself with the KKK or any white supremacist. I don’t stand with them at all,” said St. Onge, who is from Las Vegas “I do support their right to an opinion,” he added. “Free speech is definitely something I stand for.”

OH LUKE. Allow me to explain a thing to you! If you don’t like the KKK, or any white supremacist, you probably should not march with them. There are few things that give off the impression that one stands with the KKK so much as literally standing with the KKK.

There are myriad people all over the country with opinions. Practically everyone, in fact! Go stand next to one of them! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PICK THE KKK TO STAND NEXT TO, BECAUSE ALL YOU ARE DOING IS MAKING IT LOOK LIKE THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE SUPPORTING THE KKK.

The government isn’t silencing the KKK or white supremacists though. In fact, the “government” (ie: The President) is going around saying they’re not so bad, and that if they are bad, then people who hate Nazis are just as bad as the Nazis are. The “government” (ie: The President) has also decided that people like the KKK and white supremacists are not the type of terrorists they care to spend any effort or money monitoring, despite their tendency to commit violent acts in order to achieve their pathetic dream of a white ethno-state. So they probably do not actually need your help, Luke.

Let me be as clear about this as is humanly possible — no one who actually values and understands the First Amendment could possibly have, in good conscience, voted for Donald Trump. He wants to “loosen up the libel laws” — and the only way to do that would be to put something into the constitution that somehow nullifies New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, the most important First Amendment-related decision of the last century.

He is mad that police officers — part of the government — don’t rough up people who protest because they’re being “politically correct.”

“Part of the problem and part of the reason it takes so long is nobody wants to hurt each other any more, They’re being politically correct, the way they take them out, so it takes a little bit longer, and honestly protestors realize it. They realize there are no consequences to protesting anymore. There used to be consequences. There are none anymore.”

He’s also eager to eliminate the Johnson Amendment, which would result in an erosion of the establishment clause of the First Amendment. He’s promised his people that other people will wish them a Merry Christmas.

He is also, in case you had not noticed, not exactly the world’s biggest fan of the free press.

The people protesting in this park today do not mind any of that. That is fine! They are good with it, they voted for it! In fact, I will bet you anything that if Trump decided to accomplish his goals with regards to libel laws by going the John Adams route and making it illegal, for the term of his presidency, to criticize the government in certain ways, his base would cheer for it. Because he’s treated unfairly by the media.

What they are protesting is a right not guaranteed in the First Amendment — and that is the right to consequence-free speech. Not consequences from the government, mind you, but consequences from private citizens and private companies. What they want is the ability to say horrible things without anyone “silencing” them by telling them that they are a jerk. The right to say racist things without social consequences imposed on you by entities other than the government. And that is not a thing.

Yes, there used to be consequences to protesting. BEFORE PROTESTS FORCED THE GOVERNMENT TO STOP THAT SHIT.

So, Google dropped an app called “Gab” (a “free of censorship” alternative to Twitter). Over on slashdot, the Freeze Peach people are saying that the Google App Store is a de facto public square and so, they say, Google does not have the right to discriminate in this way.

Of course, I remember a similar argument back in the ’80s about leftist protests in shopping malls. But those folks were at least willing to protest anyway and get arrested.

FWIW, google is saying Gab is dropped not for their political leanings per se, but for failing to have a sufficient moderation system, not even one as feeble at Twitter’s apparently.

      • Three Finger Salute

Google is a bunch of hypocrites anyway. They don’t do shit to moderate YouTube comments, which are notoriously a garbage pit of despair. The ambient awareness is not strong with these ones; after all, there’s plenty of other hateful douchebros just like Systematizer MRA Brogrammer Guy making bank from channels that espouse the same fucking mentality. Did they ever stop to think for a minute that if he didn’t get his ideas from them, he’d fit right in with his own channel just the same? Why the fuck does Google give Jones, Milo, Levant etc. any bandwidth at all?

    • Cat Cafe for the Prosecution

No, it just says “people” which, of course means white men to Luke

  • JD Mulvey

Young Luke is protesting because he longs for those mythical days when protesters got carried out on stretchers. Not the people on his side of the protest –he means those other people.

If I called your mom a whore who should fellate all my friends would you still agree? Because if you don’t you might be right but that is free speech.

If I would say all jews should be exterminated because they are the root of all evil would you call this free speech you might be right but that is not free speech. That is an actual crime. a call to support a hate crime.

Too late Donnie – no backsies. May you choke on your bile, and the money you stole.

      • miss_grundy

The fact that we are all wishing that he has a gigantic conniption on live television so that everyone realizes that he has lost whatever foothold he had on reality and we then start an avalanche of calls, emails and visits to district offices for our congress critters and senators telling them to impeach him or kick him out using the 25th Amendment? We need to make his existence so hellish that he will either be pushed out or decide to leave and make sure that the world sees it.

      • amrak63

There is a persistent rumor that Trump never really expected, or wanted, to win. He wanted to lose narrowly and controversially, to become a martyr to the Right, which he could then parlay into a right-wing “news” network to rival Fox “News” (aka Faux Noise).

There is an added rumor that Putin never really intended Trump to win, either–he just wanted to sow bad feelings in the USA to handicap Hillary as President, specifically her ability to conduct foreign policy.

Then, Putin’s scheme Went Horribly Right, and now neither he nor his orange stooge know what to do next.

Great final paragraph, Robyn! That is exactly what they want, and by golly, they can’t have it!

If you are a Republican and you showed up at this event and marched with the racists, then you are a racist. And being a racist has consequences. And one of the consequences is that you will be labelled a racist.

  • DainBramage

Let’s not forget what Nazis and KKK-ers really want, which has nothing to do with free speech. They want a white state where they can oppress anyone they don’t like.

    • Shanzgood

Why don’t they buy an island and then go fuck off to it and leave the rest of us alone?

      • DainBramage

I’m sure there are some uninhabited atolls out in the Pacific. Since they are probably all climate change/sea level rise deniers, it shouldn’t be a problem.

        • YoBunnyBunny

Like you said, the problem is there would be nobody else there for them to oppress. And what fun would that be, huh??? They’d have to start oppressing themselves!

  • Jgb979

Even in the context of Charlottesville, the only person who’s been arrested so far is Ohio dipshit, and not because of his speech but because he mowed people down with his car killing one.

It’s one of the reason the first amendment ONLY limits government action. Free speech doesn’t mean a requirement that other people have to listen.

  • 3V3

I’m black and ace. I work with a couple of guys (one of whom is a minority) who tried to make the argument that until Trumpaliciousness actually does something, he’s not a threat. My response: “If someone holds a gun to your head, whether they shoot you or not is irrelevant. You’re still scared.” The existence of Trump, and the resurgence of white supremacy, make it scary to even wake up every day.

    • Until he actually does something?
      Like gut all environmental regulations?
      Like gut all bank regulations?
Like dismantle the departments of education and state?
Like cozy up to ruthless dictators?
Like actually say with his mouth that Nazis were good guys?
I think your co workers are being intentionally blind on this one.

    • That’s the difference between Nazi beliefs and all others (except, perhaps, murderous misogyny or murderous religious fundamentalism). Their mere EXISTENCE creates an unsafe work environment. It’s like being asked to tolerate the bubonic plague.

Would anyone be surprise that crying Nazi boy started out as a MRA and is a libertarian?

    http://www.salon.com/2017/08/18/weeping-nazi-started-off-as-a-mens-rights-activist-which-is-no-huge-surprise/

It also didn’t take long for internet sleuths to figure out that the 36-year-old, who now hosts a white supremacist talk show, has quite a history of making a spectacle of himself and has rebranded as different flavors of jackass several times over the course of his illustrious career. Cantwell ran for Congress in 2010 as a Libertarian. He and two friends started the “Free Keane Squad,” which made it to “The Colbert Report” in 2014 because their main form of activism appeared to be chasing meter maids around and harassing them for giving people parking tickets.

Cantwell also identified as a “men’s rights activist” and wrote for the site A Voice for Men, one of the hubs of organized misogyny on the internet. He expressed his views that the state supposedly gives “women the power to have men arrested for anything without any evidence at all” and how women, in their roles of “traditionally carrying the role of raising children and supporting the men,” did not evolve to have high IQs. Like men do. Allegedly.

Ayn Rand maybe? I was an asshole for two weeks while reading @las shrugged. Luckily I realized that I wasn’t all that.

          • Atheist

Ayn Rand is objectivism, but libertarians took her “rational self-interest” and just ran with it.

          • Zombishroom

It’s too simplistic. It doesn’t account for emotions or any sense of community that makes life meaningful.

          • thegirlwiththekittentattoo

Not to mention the fact that not everyone can work, and that a society needs many types of labor in order to function. Everything about her rants are the pure antethisis of communism. She wasn’t trying to develop a viable governmental or economic system, she was expressing a life-long temper tantrum over the Bolsheviks taking her toys away. She’s nothing more than an entitled, reactionary, spoiled brat.

          • Atheist

Exactly! How people treat each other matters. What people say to each other matters. Nobody is perfect but we can all do our own part to make society a decent place to live. That’s why the blind “free speech” ideology doesn’t cut it. How people treat each other defines the culture we all live in.

        • Atheist

I know. I feel your pain.

I heard about libertarianism years ago, but do you know what stopped me from actually becoming a libertarian? The libertarians themselves. They enable people to behave like assholes, and as 4chan and the alt-right have shown us that’s disastrous for everyone.

One time I saw someone describe libertarianism as a moral wasteland. I can’t disagree.

        • RepubAnon

To say “libertarian asshole” is to repeat yourself.

      • RepubAnon

Libertarians want government that lets them do whatever they want, while preventing anyone else from having the same privileges. They fail to see the inherent contradiction – sort of like the “free speech” advocates seeking to silence any speech they deem as “politically correct.”

        • thegirlwiththekittentattoo

This is so accurate. They also think they have earned every dollar and opportunity through their own merits and above all else are vehemently opposed to helping anyone unless it’s of their own volition.

Judging people by the color of their skin or clothes they wear is wrong.

Take the time to find out why they are dressed like that and what they are promoting instead of jumping to conclusions.

I am blonde, blue eyed and bald with tats. Are you going to assume I am a Nazi and flip me off the next time you see me?

          • No, I jumped to that conclusion based on the fact the picture was taken in Boston today and lil man there was marching with actual nazis.
Your high horse has been killed 20 times today, man. Bury it already.

          • Wolf Tracker

See how that worked for me?

          • Wolf Tracker

No I am pointing out how people like you are so easily manipulated to hate by a picture or the clothes a person wears or the color of their skin and you just made your self a perfect example.

          • Wolf Tracker

So all the reeneactors are traitors?

So all the reenectors at civil war reenactions are Nazi’s you will flip off?

Was he marching with Nazi’s because I don’t see them in that picture?

      • Jennaratrix

        You seem nice.

      • Roni Raven, Undercovfefe Agent

Someone carrying that flag can reasonably be assumed to sympathize with what that flag stood for: to wit, enslaving other human beings.

Carrying that flag invites judgment, just as wearing a swastika does.

Reaching conclusions about said carrier of flag requires no jumping at all. It’s hardly even a baby step.

        • Wolf Tracker

No and reeencators do that and witch sides all the time. It is a historic flag from that war.

The old civil war uniform should clue you in he is not a Nazi.

          • He is not a re-enactor, at least not today. He wore that to a nazi rally.
If you have problems with people judging him for wearing that, take it up with him, since it was his choice to wear that to a nazi rally.

          • Roni Raven, Undercovfefe Agent

Nazis can’t wear old civil war uniforms?

          • Wolf Tracker

Ever see them do that. Did you see that at the VA rally?

Most Nazi’s have no connection to the civil war and neo-nazi’s are an ideology started in Europe.

          • Roni Raven, Undercovfefe Agent

I haven’t studied the photos carefully, but I sure as hell saw plenty of Nazis carrying Confederate flags.

          • Wolf Tracker

Notice that flag. It is historically accurate and not cheap and he is a reenactor.

          • Roni Raven, Undercovfefe Agent

Yep, he reenacts all by himself next to a statue of Lee.

            Riiiiiight.

Your straw men are beginning to bore me.

You’re bashing us for making assumptions about him based on what the flag he’s carrying, yet you are assuming he is simply a harmless Civil War re-enactor based on absolutely no evidence at all.

          • Wolf Tracker

In other words you can not defend your jumping to conclusions based on a persons race and clothes.

Having a gun makes him Nazi?

          • Manders

Having a modern (and I’m guessing, functioning and loaded) gun and jeans on, by himself, “protecting” a statue of Robert E. Lee, makes him a lover of the Confederacy who decided to go hang out with Nazis and white supremacists. I cannot think of any other reason why you would go out there armed to “guard” a statue. And I don’t care to know. He’s close enough to a Nazi as to make it reeeeeal hard to tell the difference, and that? Is on him.

His college kicked him out, so clearly, they think he might be a Nazi, too.

          • Wolf Tracker

So you want to stifle any speech that does not conform to your opinion.

Might want to look up the definition for fascism.

I am pointing out you are judging a person for the clothes they wear and the color of their skin while you claim to be liberals and anyone that has ever studied our history should be able to spot a civil war costume and historically accurate flag and tell that is not probably not a Nazi which is a European ideology.

But hey if you want to ban me for pointing that out then that is on you.

          • tehbaddr

Oh yeah, you’re being stifled and suppressed then snowflake? Give it up.

          • Wolf Tracker

When you play your war video games do you ever play the bad guys?

An old civil war costume and traditional civil war flag screams Nazi.

He’s a Southern Bigot with a gun protecting a statue of a Civil War General. That boy ain’t right whatever he is.

          • tehbaddr

You see there was this war over Slavery. The owning of people. That is fucked up ideology, not heritage. He is a fuck up.

          • Wolf Tracker

Right and my Dad fought in WW2 against the Nazi’s. learn the difference.

          • tehbaddr

When they stood together for that rally last weekend, they removed all differences. That is what the story of this week has been. Don’t be a sympathizer for people w/ backwards fucked up ideology, whether Southern bigot (white supremacist) , Klansman, or Nazi

          • Wolf Tracker

He wasn’t there with the Nazi’s He showed up 3 days later on his own in a civil war costume not associated with Nazi’s

            1. I must congratulate you on the quality of your trolling. By remaining marginally polite, you have induced many people to waste keystrokes on you.

            2. My dad also fought in Europe in WW2. You must be at least fifty (if your father was about sixty when you were born). By now, you really should have an idea of what is and is not fascism. Ergo, you are trolling.

“Old Civil War uniform?” He’s wearing jeans and carrying a modern semi auto rifle. He does appear to have a cap and a jacket. But I would not call that a

          • Wolf Tracker

He wasn’t marching with Nazi’s. He showed up 3 days later in a civil war outfit to protest the removal of a statue that probably is significant to his families history.

You jumped to conclusions based on his race and clothes and someone flipping him off.

          • Nasty Girl Brianna

            And you know it.

          • Panika MCD

            so did you, Empress.

          • Bad Tom

I bet thesis defence with your Philosophy advisor is a hoot.

          • Rags

Yeah, he probably comes from a long line of notable Southern Gentlemen and Ladies of impeccable breeding, refinement and taste going back to Jamestown or some shit. So fucking what. He still can’t do what he did and not be called a racist.

          • Shanzgood

Do what Nazis do and you’ll be mistaken for one. Even if he’s not an actual Nazi, he’s protesting where they just did for the same ostensible reason they just did, standing armed in front of a statue of a racist and wearing the uniform and carrying the flag of racist traitors. So he pretty much deserved to get flipped off.

You’ve split that hair so many times now it’s down to atoms.

          • Wolf Tracker

Being mistaken for one is his fault you think?

          • Shanzgood

Yeah, it’s definitely his fault. He even claimed in one of the news reports I read that he’s upset that Nazis have claimed “his” Confederate flag for their own purposes. And then to make whatever point he has, he shows up at the very same site where Nazis protested, armed and WAVING THAT SAME FLAG. Where three people died and more than a dozen were injured because of Nazis. If he didn’t think ACTING like a Nazi was going to get him mistaken for BEING one, he’s an idiot at best and still deserves all the bird-flipping and derision he’s received for supporting the racist ideals inherent in the “Southern heritage” ideology. .

You know what he didn’t get, though? None of the violence he obviously came prepared to engage in. Neither did the Nazi assholes in Boston today. In fact, at least one of them was escorted away by a nice “antifa” who also happened to be a Black person of the female persuasion.

So, yeah. It’s his own fault for being mistaken for a Nazi for doing what Nazis do just as its your own fault for being mistaken for an asshole for defending him.

          • Bad Tom

            It was no mistake.

          • Bad Tom

            Neo-Nazi symp.

          • Wolf Tracker

So if you are outnumbered you must be wrong only in this case you all jumped to a conclusion based on someones race and clothes they must be a Nazi deserving of being flipped off or attacked.

Remind me not to come to your parties because you are way to racist and judgmental.

          • Nasty Girl Brianna

Yeah, because strange thing, we don’t like hanging around with WHITE SUPREMACIST LOSERS. Funny that, huh?

          • Wolf Tracker

Which only proves how bad you are judging people.

          • Manders

You can’t be racist against whites, sillybilly.

I don’t know if that sad sack is a Nazi, it’s true. But if you read the article (which I did), you learn that he has some real misguided ideas about the Confederacy. And that he showed up for his little slice of performance art armed to the teeth. Which is a good way to make people mistrust you and your motives.

          • Shanzgood

            Bingo.

          • Daniel

“Remind me not to come to your parties because you are way to racist and judgmental.”

Oh wait, nope. You’re just trolling I see. Carry on.

        • Wolf Tracker

So we should round up anyone that flies a flag we don’t like?

          • Nasty Girl Brianna

The flag of traitors who tried to tear this nation apart through warfare? Do you see Nazi flags flying around Germany? Do you see statues of Hitler and Himmler in Germany?

            No. No you do not.

Now fuck off and take your “Southern Pride” with you.

          • Wolf Tracker

            You didn’t answer the question:

So we should round up anyone that flies a flag we don’t like?

          • Nasty Girl Brianna

YOU didn’t answer MY question: do you see Nazi flags flying in Germany? I’ll answer your question if you answer mine.

          • Wolf Tracker

Do you want to be Germany or a country that allows flags even ones we don’t like?

          • Nasty Girl Brianna

Ok you can’t answer the question.

            Go fuck off now. Blocked.

          • Wolf Tracker

Yes you couldn’t answer that because you know the answer is no.

          • Manders

But you didn’t answer her question, which means you know the answer is yes, and why.

          • Daniel

Do you want to be the economic powerhouse of a continent leading the charge for human rights and welcoming of refugees, or do you want to be ruled by a reality show host?

          • starfanglednut

And national health care, and renewable energy?

Nope. Still rather live where you can hang out by a confederate statue with an automatic weapon and a confederate flag, and not have someone (gasp!) flip you off.

          • Bad Tom

Germany is a better country than ours right now.

          • Manders

The only person bringing up “rounding up” is you, kitten.

And you know who did round people up, now that I think of it?

            Nazis!

          • Wolf Tracker

Yup they sure did and they started by judging people by their race, religion, size of their nose and clothing.

          • Manders

Yeah, you had to throw “clothing” in there to support your stupid argument.

It was race and religion, political beliefs, sexual orientation, and if you didn’t agree to go along with their whole agenda.

And again, nobody is rounding anyone up. The police are by and large Republican, and they do arrest protestors on the slightest provocation, and shoot armed and unarmed people, often black.

But the state does the rounding up, and the state is not lefty. So the “rounding up” thing is dumb and you should drop it.

ETA: in fact the only people being “rounded up” these days are undocumented immigrants, and you can bet your sweet blonde beard they are being judged, at least at first, based on skin color and not their clothes.

          • Shanzgood

What is this one, students of rhetoric? Straw man or slippery slope? Slippery straw man, maybe?

          • Wolf Tracker

Just pointing out the ridiculousness of people judging people by their race and clothes without finding out who they are.

You can’t claim to be a liberal if you are so fast to judge people based on race and clothes and a flag IMO.

          • Shanzgood

No true Scotsman argument now? Weak! Sad!

          • Wolf Tracker

            Truth is truth.

          • Shanzgood

Is anybody else playing Logical Fallacy Bingo? Because I think I just won!

          • Wolf Tracker

If you think claiming someone else is wrong so your friends like you is winning I guess.

I prefer people that can stand on their own ideology and principles and defend them.

          • Daniel

“I prefer people that can stand on their own ideology and principles and defend them.”

Not a big one for the party system in a democracy then?

          • Rags

So you think I have friends????

          • Bad Tom

            And lies are lies.
            Simple like you.

          • Rags

Only need one more for a rhetorical Bingo!

          • Manders

Just clothes, dude. And where he was and when. The skin color is irrelevant without the other stuff.

          • Wolf Tracker

Yes because how dare someone that has a family history in the confederates protest a confederate statue being taken down.

I think his costume should have clued you in he was not a Nazi but some people are simple that way.

          • Shanzgood

His costume included a semi-automatic handgun. Real authentic, that.

          • Wolf Tracker

Because guns are outlawed in the US.

I repeat: some people are simple like that.

          • Manders

Hey peanut? People would be more willing to listen to you if you didn’t insult them. Just a thought.

One person called the guy Nazi Boi, one, and here you are, hours later, calling everyone “racist” (which again, not a thing you can be against a race that has not been historically oppressed), even when people tell you they don’t really think he’s a Nazi, just real stupid.

          • Rags

Again with the family history? What is it with you? IT’S NOT AN EXCUSE.

          • Rags

And carrying a semi and handgun. And saying racist shit (did you hear him in the clip?)

          • SDGeoff3

            I can’t see him anymore. Block-a-palooza.

          • SDGeoff3

Bring them home, cook them a nice meal with some good wine and inside-voice conversation. Put them in the guest room, bloody marys at 7, and send them out into the world mellow, well fed and calmed down?

          • Wolf Tracker

Sounds like you can benefit from the free mental health care in the ACA tell your fantasies to your doctor please.

          • Unmutual Tetsu Kaba

Free mental health care? You obviously know shit about the ACA.

          • Rags

Ah, the ad hominem. I call rhetorical Bingo!

          • Covfefe

In today’s America, we don’t actually “round up” people until they get violent. But we are reasonably cautious about lunatics with not one but two guns who are fixated on the glory of the losing side of a war fought 150 years ago, particularly when that losing side started the war to preserve slavery.

          • Rags

            who rounded who up here?

      • Snopes Shop

        You again?

        • Wolf Tracker

I am expecting a breakthrough from you people any time now.

          • WomanInThePersistence

I tried. I prefer to think that you are not an asshole. But I am pretty convinced that you are a condescending fuck.

          • starfanglednut

And not terribly bright, also too.

        • SDGeoff3

          Not any more.

      • SDGeoff3

Not if you can keep jumping to concussions.

        • Wolf Tracker

So threats of violence because of a persons race and clothing is your answer.

          • SDGeoff3

I’m not the one jumping. You are.

          • Wolf Tracker

            OK whatever.

          • SDGeoff3

Whatever it takes. And in your case, it doesn’t take much, as all can see right here.
            Blocked. Sad.

          • Wolf Tracker

That is how you judge a win. When your friends all agree with you.

            Sad.

          • Shanzgood

Soldier boy had a semi-automatic handgun and a rifle.

          • Wolf Tracker

So having a gun makes him a Nazi.

          • Shanzgood

No, just an asshole. Because of where he was and what he was doing and when.

          • Wolf Tracker

Kind of like trolling people that point out you are judgmental and over reactive makes you an asshole.

          • Shanzgood

Do you know WHY people are judgmental about folks who carry Confederate flags? Especially RIGHT NOW?

          • Wolf Tracker

Which is EXACTLY why I posted this to get you people to think before you do something STUPID that undermines our whole message.

          • Shanzgood

Well, thanks for the concern trolling. Is the lecture over or do you need to vaguely call more of us racists?

          • Wolf Tracker

If that had been a black man in that civil war uniform would you still have called him a Nazi?

          • Shanzgood

I didn’t call him a Nazi. And if he’d been Black, that picture wouldn’t exist.

          • Wolf Tracker

            Your racist attitudes are obvious.

Something for you to work on.

          • Shanzgood
          • Covfefe

Since I’m STUPID, help me with this. What attitudes displayed by Shanzgood are obviously racist?

          • Manders

Babe. There was a whole march today with people on the left far outnumbering people on the right and there was no violence.

Calling someone a Nazi, pointing out their racism, is not a slippery slope to violence. Showing up to protest armed and storing caches of weapons all over the city is a slippery slope to violence.

          • Manders

Also, what’s with “our”? I don’t think you are lefty, pal.

          • Covfefe

Wait. Who’s doing something STUPID to undermine whose whole message? I agree it isn’t you because I can’t figure out what you message is. Guess that makes me STUPID.

          • Shanzgood

Other than soldier boy at the statue? I might say our concern troll here, who might have approached all this in a totally different way and made an actual real point. Me, I went and looked up who the “re-enactor” was, where and when and why the picture was taken. I figured out he’s not an actual Nazi but at this point, it doesn’t make any difference because he’s ACTING like one. He’s still a racist and an asshole and so is the guy currently defending this “Southern pride” bullshit by calling us “fake liberals” and racists.

          • WomanInThePersistence

You are talking about a friend of mine.

          • Covfefe

If Shanzgood is an asshole, what is someone who points out that your civil war dude is stupid and that anyone tries to glorify stupid civil war dudes, is stupid his own self, also too?

          • Rags

            “I’m rubber, you’re glue.”

          • Covfefe

No. It doesn’t make him a Nazi. It makes him stupid. He doesn’t know, or care, much about the weapons that actually were used in the war of northern aggression.

          • Bad Tom

            Having modern weapons makes him
            NOT A CIVIL WAR REENACTOR.
            You fucking fool.

          • Covfefe

Of course he has a semi-automatic handgun and a rifle. When you’re a civil war re-enactor, you have to be authentic.

      • Wolf Tracker

So for the people still wanting to respond. The man in the picture was not with the Nazi’s and showed up 3 days later in a civil war costume and was alone and probably has some family history to the confederacy.

Next time don’t jump to conclusions because of a persons race and clothing or you can hardly claim to be liberals.

By the way I fight the Nazi ideology all over this and other blogs and my dad fought in WW2 against the Nazi’s so you also probably judged me wrong.

        • Shanzgood

No. We judged both you and the lone Confederate soldier boy as assholes by your ill-advised actions. And we were right.

          • Wolf Tracker

If having your friends like you is more important than honesty I guess you win.

          • Shanzgood

            Victim fallacy! Appeal to (un)popularity!

          • Wolf Tracker

Not here to be popular but obviously you are.

            Sad.

          • Shanzgood

Ooh, ad hominem attacks now! Or should I say ad feminam?

Dude, what’s next? Yo mama jokes?

          • Wolf Tracker

You mean like calling me an asshole?

            Like that?

          • Shanzgood

Yes! Just like that! You get one square on the bingo card!

          • Bad Tom

That’s because you are an asshole.

          • Covfefe

Well, Shanzgood is popular, but she’s only here for baconz.

          • Shanzgood

I know where my baconz is.

          • starfanglednut

            You bring home the baconz.

          • Shanzgood

And fry it up in the pan.

          • starfanglednut

            Sizzle!

        • Maclare, Local Milk Person 🍼

Wolf, do you have a link to the info that this guy showed up late and alone? Cause i’m not finding it backtracking the Twitter link.

          • Wolf Tracker

            Down lower in the posts.

        • Rags

A family history in the confederacy. And this excuses him how? This is the second time today you have implicitly asserted that political attitudes are so heritible that this constitutes an excuse for inappropriate behavior. Stop it.

      • SnarkON

Depends. Are you marching in a fucking white supremacy rally?

        • Wolf Tracker

No and neither was he. Read below.

          • SnarkON

OK, I would agree that he cannot be described as a Nazi. However, most of America is not in the mood to humor a Confederate sympathizer who shows up in Charlottesville, armed to the teeth, to guard a Confederate statue. His behavior, *which includes his costume*, understandably pissed off a lot of people, which of course he knew would happen. He chose to be there. He knew he would be photographed. As for assuming that a blond, blue-eyed tattooed gentleman such as yourself is a Nazi, it’s safe to say that nobody here would judge you on your appearance. (Assuming you don’t have Nazi tattoos.) But come on, nobody is judging this Confederate kid on his face or hair. They’re judging him, and rightfully so, on what he is doing.

          • Wolf Tracker

AND that is why I posted this because too many of your are going off half cocked on anger and someone will over react and there goes our whole message.

          • SnarkON

I don’t disagree with you, but you’re coming off as a little “concern troll” here. It’s great to talk to people and ask them questions without jumping to conclusions, but a costumed demonstrator holding a Confederate flag and two firearms in Charlottesville is making a pretty obvious statement. I don’t think he was aiming for subtlety, and he should expect unsubtle conclusions about who he is and what he stands for.

          • Wolf Tracker

That is making excuses and maybe you all need a wake up call right now before this goes sideways and some fool on the left starts shooting people.

If that does not concern you- it should.

          • SnarkON

OK you lost me. I tried. By the way, the shooting and pedestrian-murdering is coming from the right. If they are scared of violence, it’s *their* responsibility, not ours, to cool it with the fucking weapons.

          • Shanzgood

Seriously. We’re not the ones showing up to protests armed better than the cops.

          • WomanInThePersistence

It does concern me. And what is up with the you all thing?

      • Bad Tom

He was not part of any civil war reenactment. He dressed that way purposefully as a provocation.

        Here’s the original thread: http://www.dailyprogress.com/news/local/n-c-man-in-confederate-uniform-with-rifle-in-emancipation/article_8fece36c-81c8-11e7-9a3c-bb3e2637cc8d.html

        You are a liar.

      • Anna Rompage

Actually your full of shit, this kid showed up to an anti confederate rally that was held at the base of a confederate statue and was saluting the Statue the for quite some time…

Sorry, but major fail on your part. Perhaps you should have taken the time to do a little research before opening up your trap…

    • Nasty Girl Brianna

Real “master race” material, that one.

Fuck off Gavin. Hipster Nazi douchebro whose cult of anti-masturbation fanatics went and harassed First Nations demonstrators calling for a removal of a statue of Lord Halifax. Why the fuck is that prick in my city? Go back home to Canada and crawl back in bed with Daddy Ezra. No, you know what? Don’t go home to Canada; the First Nations have suffered enough and Canadians are sick and tired of you, your pimp and the rest of his brothel spreading vile, libelous bullshit about everyone in the Trudeau family including the poor dead little brother. You, Ezra and the whole lot of them at Deplorebel just pack your things and take a one-way cruise to a remote desert island where you can make a DIY internet with coconuts and talk to a volleyball. I’ll even pay for the duck boat — or in your case, “cuck boat.” A three-hour tour, a three-hour tour…

    • amrak63

I know nothing about these people.

      “Anti-masturbation fanatics”?

So they either don’t wank, or hate themselves if they do.

And I’m guessing their personalities would prevent their getting laid.

I guess those things would explain why they are so hateful–it’s what Mojo Nixon would call the “demon jism buildup”.

      • Edith Prickly

You could google “Proud Boys”, but you might regret it.

        • Three Finger Salute

I’m just proud to see this happening.

Canada’s Rebel Media is imploding before our eyes

Apparently it’s not only because they went too far and attached themselves to Charlottesville and actual Nazis (Goldy only got canned for giving an interview to Daily Stormer’s podcast). One of their own former employees released a tape of more of Ezra’s flagrant flouting of journalistic ethics (like he has any to begin with) and suppression of stories that conflict with their narrative. The reporter is British and has accused Ezra of refusing to air reports about electoral fraud among the UKIP so that they could court Nigel Farage as a high-profile contributor. But the more damaging allegation (always the bottom line) is that of financial malfeasance and fraudulent misuse of donations for his own purposes.

Worth noting that, rumor has it, Ezra is having difficulties making payments on a reno of his home in Toronto that he could never really afford in the first place. I guarantee you the Property Brothers want nothing to do with this asshole even though they don’t work for cheap either.

Follow the money. Always follow the money.

          http://frankmag.ca/2017/05/whose-house-ezra-derangement-edition/

        • Three Finger Salute

The FrankMag.ca article about what Ezra is probably doing with the money he got from his rubes is paywalled, but if you want to read it:

Levant (v.): To run away, typically leaving unpaid debts.

Bruising days for Ezra Levant, as the Rebel Obergrüppenfuhrer stares down an ad-shaming campaign by Sleeping Giants, the anti-racist buzzkill collective, which claims to have driven a reported 2,000 online advertisers away from fake news stalwart Breitbart, and now threatens to do the same to its dumber Canadian cousin.

Add to these travails the abrupt departure of Jack Posobiec, bonkers Pizzagate provocateur and Rebel’s short-lived “Washington Bureau Chief” amidst the MacronLeaks and Seth Rich shitshows, the arrest of Ezra’s UK-based senior skinhead, Tommy Robinson, and the usual ongoing defamation dramas, and one wonders how the little pisher manages to get up and put on his jackboots some mornings.

No doubt at times like this Ez’ closes his eyes and thinks of his idyllic home life with his delightful second wife, Irina, and their expensively private-schoold son and two daughters, all joyfully anticipating the completion of their dream home in Forest Hill.

The House of Ezra, still under construction, is (in a prudent bit of judgment-proofing by the litigation-prone Lügenpants) registered in Irina’s name.

The Levants snapped up the property for a mere $1.6 mil in 2014, while Ezra was still drawing a regular Sun TV paycheque. The purchase, the bulldozing of the existing shack and the construction of a new monster home were financed with a $2.5 million mortgage from Scotiabank.

Last October, they took out a second $1.2 million mortgage with the delightfully-named Gonad Holdings Inc. (Put Your Glands in the Hands of the Man!) Gonad is squeezing Ezra for interest-only payments at eight per cent per annum, or $8,000 a month.

Alas, as with all things Ezra, nothing is as simple as it seems, and even as ongoing work on the Levant dream home continues to disturb the peace of long-suffering neighbours, irate tradesmen are complaining of being bilked and lawyering up.

Diamondwood Management Inc., project manager of the construction from June 2015 until their replacement last October (right around the time of that second mortgage with Gonad) claims the Levants are still into them for $184,972.84.

“To date, Diamondwood has made numerous demands for payment from Levant for the outstanding amounts owed to Diamondwood in respect of the labour and materials that it supplied in relation to the Project,” reads the statement of claim, drawn up by legalists Jonathan Goode and Kayla Kwinter (Torkin Maines LLP) and filed at the Toronto courthouse Apr. 24.

Further down Ezra’s dine-and-dash food chain, Jcon Design Build, Inc., hired to do the actual construction, filed their own suit Apr. 27, naming Diamondwood, Irina, Gonad and Scotiabank as defendants. They claim to be out $118,650 for work completed. E. Alan Garbe, barrister and solicitor, is leading the legal charge.

“In or around June 2015, Jcon entered into an agreement with Diamondwood whereby Jcon would construct a house… construction included exterior walls, masonry work, plumbing, electrical work and drywall but not finishing work. Jcon was advised that the work on the Project on or about September 1, 2015. In October 2016, Jcon was advised that Diamondwood was being replaced as the construction manager for the Project and Jcon was asked to issue a final invoice for the remainder of its work.”

Jcon says it was asked to stay on to ensure a smooth transition, and wrapped up its work in January, with everything completed but the drywall (to be completed by a new company) and sent its final bill. They’re still waiting.

So far, no response from Ezra or his counsel to any of these allegations, which are clearly all the result of an unfortunate misunderstanding. After all, unlike his hero, Der Donald Trump, who has left legions of suppliers, contractors, and assorted rubes sucking the pipe, our Ezra’s a man of his word and would shurely never renege on a debt or contractual obligation. Shurely.

Out of an abundance of caution, however, both Diamondwood and Jcon applied for construction liens on Casa Levant in March.

The house hasn’t been assessed yet, but real estate experts from Frankland Capital Corporation predict that by the time the dust settles, it’ll clock in around $4-million.

Once the litigation is cleared up, Ezra and the Mrs. plan to hold an open house to thank all those Rebel supporters who donated their savings to countless Rebel fundraisers that have helped the Lügenpants family live high on the hog (shurely “happily ever after”?! -ed.)

          • Edith Prickly

Ezra puts the “con” in Conservative. Douchebag.

The “Proud Boys” who disrupted an Indigenous ceremony could get kicked out of the Canadian military

The five members of the Canadian Armed Forces who disrupted an Indigenous ceremony in Halifax on Canada Day have all been suspended from their duties as the military investigates their actions. The men identified themselves as part of the Proud Boys, a far-right men’s group whose members describe themselves as “Western chauvinists.” The group’s Facebook page regularly includes anti-Muslim, anti-feminist, anti-trans, and anti-Indigenous links and commentary.

On July 1, a group of Indigenous people gathered at the statue of Edward Cornwallis, the founder of Halifax, to call attention to his racist actions against the Mi’kmaq. The group of Proud Boys who crashed the Cornwallis protest carried a Red Ensign flag, and got into an argument with others about ownership of the land.

The Proud Boys is a relatively new group started by Gavin McInnes, the Canadian cofounder of Vice who is currently a contributor to Rebel Media and other right-wing outlets. The name of the group comes from a song in Aladdin. Proud Boys are discouraged from masturbating and have a bizarre initiation ritual that involves naming breakfast cereals. Members of the group and its affiliated, militant wing — the Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights — have been involved in altercations at various rallies in support of and against the Trump administration.

  • Robert Gibson

I only just put this together, so forgive me if it’s common knowledge.

By emphasizing ‘small government’ and privatizing some government functions, the ability to silence hate speech (or any speech I guess) *increases*.

Like, if the government ran the Internet, then GoDaddy and Google couldn’t boot The Daily Stormer.

I’m not sure how I feel about that. On one hand I’m for bigger government and believe it is it’s duty to maximize happiness, and be fair to all. On the other, I’m really glad all of these entities can freeze out bad actors.

I’m not sure how to reconcile that.

How could government ensure ‘free speech’ and avoid ‘consequence-free speech’?

    • If the government ran the internet, they could not prevent go daddy or google from booting the nazis. Because private enterprise.
      So there is that!

    • eyelashviper

that is a tremendous issue, and many good governments have struggled to deal with it. the US has one of the most open policies to allow any kind of speech, including the most vile and hateful. Germany, for instance, has outlawed any speech or support of Nazism, yet they are also an open society and have a very free press, and allow people all kinds of freedoms to speak out. Scandinavian countries also have outlawed some forms of expression, but are very open and tolerant of differences and beliefs.
As has been said for centuries, by many, that a democracy is a fragile thing, and there are no hard and fast rules, and only an educated and involved citizenry can keep it alive.

    • Three Finger Salute

You reconcile that with the fact that they are not pressured or compelled to do so except when it proves harmful to PR or their bottom line. If Google really gave a shit about booting hate speech, they’d have disabled all YouTube comments and purged probably half of the MRA/alt-right channels a long time ago. If a “maximizing happiness” sort of government ran the Internet, GoDaddy and Google wouldn’t even have been allowed to host The Daily Stormer at all. Twitter and Facebook probably wouldn’t even exist, because the model for that kind of website is literally just one yuge comments section.

Sanctions against rogue nations like Russia would include blockades against their hatewing psy-op websites at the DNS level. Corporate takeovers of the airwaves from rapacious ultracapitalist hatemongers like Murdoch and Sinclair wouldn’t be allowed to happen.

We’re at a point now where the Internet has become a weapon of mass destruction that needs to be disarmed. The U.S. needs a Marshall Plan from Europe and Canada to come in and clean things up.

It’s a Pinch collar, a special tool used sparingly in obedience training. I’ve used them to good effect. The novelty of the pain is what makes them effective for awhile. What they are not for is every day use. So tired of seeing them used inappropriately. Pit Bull owner, I’m lookin’ yer way.

Gawd, all the new millenials in the building across the street don’t use anything but fucking harnesses on even big dogs. Of course, the dogs drag their owners all over the fucking place. I can’t watch, man.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

I’ve always wondered that. All my life I’ve raised big dogs, often times great big ones, many who are headstrong and with the wolf dogs especially, not in any way conditioned to walking on a leash. Never needed anything so cruel and barbaric looking…

          • Courser_Resistance

I’ve never needed more than a thinner training collar. But I had Borzoi and other sighthounds. While they’re big, they are pretty easy to control and train. I could walk 3 or 4 at a time. As long as they didn’t see a squirrel.

You stand with them you will be treated like them because here there be monsters and we will not allow you to grant them camouflage. Their symbols and key phrases are how we recognize the monsters and by using them casually, playing but not meaning it you aid them. We will not accept your explanation that you’re not a monster you just want to play with the symbology because this gives the monsters a place to hide.

If you do not wish to be treated like a monster, do not act like a monster.

Why tourists asking for directions get lost in Boston.
(Or any part of Mass., R.I. and probably all of New England.)

Tourist: I’m looking for the Prudential building?
Southie: Turn right at the next Dunkin’ Donuts. Then there’s a light, and you’ll see a Dunkin’ Donuts. But if you come to a Dunkin’ Donuts, you’ve gone too fah.

      Tourist: How far is it?
Southie: About 20 minutes from heeah.

Tourist: How long does it take to get there?
Southie: Oh, it’s only about a mile or so up.

Then bout half a mile up you take another left by the Baptist church, and after you pass the crick, you take a right at the Pentecostal Church and you are almost there. If you get to the NEW WalMart, you done gone too far!”

      • SDGeoff3

Picture this; Rhode Island, 1962, giving directions to Almacs or Stop and Shop.
Go down the street two blocks and take a left. When you get to the place where the old fire station used to be…

        • bupkus231

My aunt tells this story about directions in their ticky-tacky, everywhere looks-alike suburbia in Central FL – when they moved in, they had a palm tree in the front of their small lot at an intersection. Unlike most of the palms in this neighnorhood, this one sickened and died soon after they moved in – but my uncle didn’t want to pay to have it removed. It reamined a dead brown presence in their front yard for several years, until my uncle passed away. My aunt soon decided to get rid of the dead palm.

Three days later, more than one neighbor complaoned to her that she had taken away their most reliable “landmark” in giving directions – “Take a left when you see the dead palm tree…”

I guess this might been funnier before the widespread use of GPS….

          • SDGeoff3

Lady MS: As a letter carrier back when Reading PA really WAS the ‘Outlet Capitol of the World’, was stopped countless times daily for directions to Vanity Fair. The nearer I got to going postal, the more likely it was I would say: ‘go down 3 red lights, and turn green’. They would thank me; I would stand & watch.

      • Suttree

          • Suttree

You don’t know what street you’re on. Every intersection, there’s a street sign, but it only tells you the name of the other street. Perhaps your street has no name. Perhaps it doesn’t exist.

The road has two lanes. You thought it had three, but suddenly there are two. Now three again. Now one.

Construction workers close down a street. They work for years. No one says what they’re doing, but machinery moves back and forth and great clouds of smoke go up into the sky. When they finally leave, the street looks as if they were never there.

Roads were named, back in the old times, by the city they went to. A road that went to Boston was Boston Road. But many roads lead to Boston. So there are many Boston Roads. They do not connect to each other. They are all Boston Road.

        • BosGrl

          But wait, there’s more!

Washington Street goes a long, long way. Through many towns and cities.

At each municipal boundary, (or former municipal boundary,)
the address numbering starts over, sometimes in a random fashion

Lost Person: “Hello. I’m trying to find 202 Washington Street.”
          Me: “What town?”
          Lost Person: “Boston”
Me: (Oh, Jeez) “Do you know the zip?”
Lost Person: “Boston, 02132. It’s right off of School Street.”
Me: “That’s actually West Roxbury. You’re in Brighton. Do you have GPS?”
          Lost Person: “No.”
Me: (Oh, Jeez) “OK, you should write this down…”

Massachusetts Avenue is the same story.

Northern Louisiana, middle of nowhere, about 2 am, ice storm on a long road trip. I’m driving down the road paralyzed with fear, sleet is bringing trees down along the side of the road. We come out of the trees and the road is atop a long raised bit between two fields. I hit some bad ice and started spinning, ended up backwards in a ditch. Less than 15 minutes later a farmer pulls up and pulls us out with his tractor. said he saw our lights spinning across the field. We’re thanking him and he says with his hand out. ” I didn’t fuckin’ come out here to be charitable”

        • george lastrapes

As a onetime Louisianian, I apologize. But I think you just might’ve encountered a non-representative arsehole. I was always taught that kindness to strangers, even of the yankee persuasion, is simply what is done, and it always gives me the warm fuzzies to respond to thanks, or the offer of payment, by saying “It was my pleasure.”
How much did he shake you down for, if I may ask?

          • cheetojeebus

I think it was about 40 bucks? We joked afterward that he had been doing it all night. The worse experience was in Arkansas. The wipers had big chunks of ice on em. The driver side flew off the car. so I pulled over to swap the passenger side in. a truck was driving by I waved at him and the guy slowed down and showed me he had a shot gun in his hand! In the middle of massive ice storm ?! It was like a Steven King movie.

          • george lastrapes

When I was at LSU I would go with my wiggedout hippie-looking friends to a little bar in the country. Scenes in a movie were filmed there, locals were employed as extras. I wasn’t around for that, but one of the regulars was mad at himself for being in the movie, and used drunkenness as an excuse.
The movie was ‘Easy Rider’ and the regular played the redneck who shot Peter Fonda. He was afraid he’d always be that person in the world’s estimation.
My friends and I looked at least as weird as Fonda and Hopper, but we never felt threatened. Maybe the reefer we shared with them helped. Couldn’t’ve hurt.
My real brush with fame came a couple of years later. Serious anti-war action was going on, and discussed at ‘Free Speech Alley’, but David Duke- yes, one-and-the-same- was constantly trying to usurp the podium to spew racist Klan garbage. He was six feet tall, a hundred pounds, a nasty smirk, sophomoric as only right-wing college students can be. I yelled at him and shoved him and to this day I regret not being the guy who decked him.
Odd to say, it was invigorating to be a burgeoning lefty in a conservative place. I miss the feeling.

          • cheetojeebus

Ha! Back when I was doing kinda-sorta free-lance journalism stuff (don’t get excited. I interviewed dog breeders for a niche publishing co), I had to go to Boston while the Big Dig was going on. Traffic was pretty crazy, but those Zipper things that moved the barriers? That thing was fucking awesome. I didn’t mind sitting in traffic if I could watch that thing. I was absolutely fascinated and felt like I’d seen something truly extraordinary and rare. When I got back, I couldn’t shut up about it. It was like “Country Girl goes to Boston!” That entire trip was pretty awesome.

          • bupkus231

Shee-it. That’s some neato technology. On the Mid-Hudson bridge, they just have some guy hanging off the back of a truck, twice a day, picking up and placing down traffic cones – and they’re not even real traffic cones, but some kinda plastic stick thing that goes in a hole in the roadway. They’ll scratch the paint on your car real nice ifn you scrape one….

To be fair, it IS a rather small suspension bridge, only three lanes, but when the Metro North trains are due/arriving in Poughkeepsie, it’s a good thing to have two lanes going the right way…

I thought the same. They really think we are stupid.

          • bupkus231

Nah – it’s not so much that they think we’re stupid. It’s that they’re so stupid and confused, they don’t know how to “recover” from events beyond their control when they attempt a snow job. Face it, any good snow job has several backup plans – but these guys apparently never thought they’d need any…..

          • SDGeoff3

Tangerini helped to divide this country even more than it was already divided due to the corporate conservative media and conservative pundits. At least he decided to unmask himself as a racist bigot to those who live outside of NYC. (Hint, those of us from the great NYC already knew that he was a racist bigot since we have seen his show on display for decades.)

    • Red Bird

Jesus! Why, Lord, why is this man President?

      • Keith Taylor

I think it’s because of that accursed 5-4 Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act, which became less effective thereby (muscle and spine ripped out of it would be more accurate) nicely in time for 2016. Then there’s Kris Kobach’s triply accursed Interstate Crosscheck system, which too many states adopted with no realistic cause. The Crosscheck procedures were sloppy and slanted — a mild, polite description. And then there were the long standing, tried and true voter suppression methods the Republican Party has used before.
Oh, there were also far too many millions of people who actually did vote for Trump, but I don’t believe for a second they were enough to put him in the Oval Office. I don’t really believe the Russians did it either, though they were certainly hacking into the American electoral process and ready to move if they had to; I believe they saw the GOP had that matter well in hand and relaxed in happy confidence.
But why the hell is that man STILL President and not in a padded cell wearing a nice white jacket with very long sleeves, doing therapy to make him capable of articulate speech instead of tweeting?
It beats me and I guess beats you.

Now you’re the one making assumptions.
Also too, we are an open, dynamic community of actual people who actually get together IRL. This is a good place where thoughtful, civil discussions abound. The only “queen of the boards” is Donna Rose, and that is a title bestowed by our magnanimous overlords. Unless you bring those cakes we like, or some cedar cheese next time you come in here to not comment expect to be asked to check your pants at the door, Brad.

Somehow WomanInThePersistence never reminded me of the killer mob in “Lord of the Flies” before.

          • WomanInThePersistence

            Thanks.

        • tehbaddr

“this is just a popularity contest where you have to agree and be the biggest bitch on the block” No it isn’t, you just have to show up, be reasonable and fact oriented. You were totally wrong on that Southern Boy Nutjob protecting the statue. I get you’re don’t assume attitude. But all evidence and the fact of the situation in which the photo was taken clearly indicates that “Southern Heritage” (slavery), and possibly racism was clearly on display.

          • Wolf Tracker

My posts are right below an anyone is free to read the discussion we had and see who was being reasonable.

            It wasn’t you.

          • tehbaddr

Hey, I know, I suppressed you and your freedom of speech (not).
Anywhoo stick around and open your mind, or not. Have a good evening.

          • Wolf Tracker

No but you tried. Think about that.

          • Up In Smoke O’hontas

Goodness. You have in no way had your free expression supressed. You have been contradicted by calm, thoughtful people, mostly, and you still have not made a salient point. Thank you for being courteous, mostly, but your arguments are shallow, your reasoning is hollow, and the discussions you have inserted yourself into are not applicable to bothsiderism. Btw, my Mr is blonde, blue eyed, bald and is wearing a shirt that says “show up for abortion right.” Anyone got some conclusions to draw from that?

          • Wolf Tracker

Only your buddies did try to get me banned and probably will be successful and you can all clap yourselves on the back for running off that guy that stood up to you and didn’t agree with your opinions.

You have made no argument here and you have not followed the discussion but somehow you feel haughty enough to proclaim my argument not salient and discourteous.

The conclusion I draw is you now want to hijack my thread for some votes and a pat on the bum bum.

          • Up In Smoke O’hontas

Nope. also: you seem to want to think for the rest of us because you can’t stand that we made fun of a kid that was dressed up in Confederate regalia carrying a semi-automatic rifle.

make up your damn mind, Sunshine!

          • Wolf Tracker

She said she was blocking me. Read.

          • Panika MCD

I did. don’t know why you felt the need to give her permission.

    • Covfefe

I myself am too much of a coward to address the Grand Wolf Tracker directly.

But I’m brave enough to judge. Your civil war re-enacted dude, wandering around a re-enactment free park with two firearms and a confederate-looking uniform is trying to glorify the losing side in a war confederates fought to preserve slavery.

I judge that you and your civil war re-enactor are cool with defending slavery. I also judges that the two of you are lunatics.

I judge that you civil war enactor is more dangerous than you are because he’s carrying two guns while our Grand Wolf Tracker is engaged in pure speech, which is annoying but doesn’t actually threaten anyone.

      • Wolf Tracker

AND that is how people end up getting shot is making bad judgement without finding out the facts and using some common sense.

What did you want to do to that young man and would that have changed his ideology or make it even more entrenched?

        • Panika MCD

so if we make fun of the guy in Confederate regalia with a semi-automatic weapon *on the internet* we’re going to end up getting shot? that’s a new one.

What is this thing you have that every action must ‘change’ someones’ ‘ideology?’ No.

      • Anna Rompage

I kind of missed all the drama, but here’s the thing, if you defend or march with alt-right, white power Nazis and chant Nazi slogans, at the very least you are agreeing with their core principles, and are in fact, and alt right Nazi…

        • Wolf Tracker

You did miss it because the man they were hammering on was not with the Nazis and showed up 3 days later by himself in a confederate uniform to protest the removal of the statue and probably has family connections to the confederates.

I pointed out they should not be so fast to judgment and they wanted me to be banned because I wouldn’t go along with the clique decision.

          End of story.

          • Panika MCD

let’s not forget your crime against some Viking for stealing his beard and mustache.

          • Anna Rompage

            Even worse…

My family came over from England around 1635, settled in Virginia, and migrated south, and south west

Most of my ancestors were aligned with the confederates.

While I have attachment to my historical roots, their time defending slavery is a black mark on my family heritage…

if a bunch of Germans dressed up in WWII Nazi uniforms flew the Nazi flag to celebrate their heritage, I think it would over about as well as these alt right neo Nazis flying the Nazi flag here, though over there, they’d be arrested

Why can’t people honor their heritage, and also accept their ancestors did reprehensible things that need not be celebrated?

    Moving on.

Boston ‘free speech’ rally ends early amid flood of counterprotesters; 27 people arrested

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said there were 27 arrests, primarily for disorderly conduct. He said no officers or protesters were injured and there was no property damage. Evans added that three individuals were wearing ballistics vests, one of whom was later found to be armed. It is unclear if those three are among the arrests.

Evans said there were three groups of people in attendance: attendees of the “free speech” rally, counter protesters, and a small group of people who showed up to cause trouble.

“Overall everyone did a good job,” Evans said. “99.9 percent of people were here for the right reason, and that’s to fight bigotry.”

      No, no, Old Man Trump!

Old Beach Haven ain’t my home!

    • Daniel

You’ll have to excuse me, I’m not an American so my grasp of your democracy is rudimentary, but while I understand completely that the majority of the blame for Trump’s election should rest on the shoulders of those who paid attention to the things he said and did during the campaign and therefore chose not to vote for him, I hope you accept there was voting on both sides and the several people who cast their votes for Trump perhaps share some responsibility for his presidency too?

As I say, I’m not from the US- in my country the winner of an election is the candidate with the most votes, but I gather that in yours that isn’t the case and this is why all those who supported Clinton ensured Trump’s victory. Still, though, maybe both sides are to blame?

True Story ~ The Alternate History track at Dragon Con has been taken over by the Steampunk RWNJs. The Time Travelers Ball on Sunday night used to be a joint affair with the Pirate’s Guild. And yes, the pirates were ousted from their own party! So now the Atlanta pirates have a Piratepalooza complete with pub crawl to coincide with Talk Like A Pirate Day. People who come from out of town looking for pirates have been disappointed for the past 5 years.

  • Keith Taylor

This came as a surprise to me, but I just read something with which I AGREE — from the mouth of Rush Limbaugh!
If he’s been quoted correctly …
“America is under attack from within. Our culture, our history, our founding, are under the most direct assault I have seen in my life. And I’m sure it’s the same with you. We haven’t seen anything like this. You might even get away with saying we are on the cusp of a second civil war. Some of you might even say that we are already into it, that it has already begun. However you characterize it, though, we are under attack from within. And it’s being bought and paid for by people from outside America, in addition to inside.”
Then I read on. And discovered that Mr. Limbaugh doesn’t mean by that quite what I would mean by precisely the same words.
And he and those like him seem to WANT that second civil war and yearn for an excuse to load a gun.

    • Count Awesome

They want to refight the war they already lost. Do we really need sequels invading the political spectrum?

    • jesterpunk

Funny Rush was a chickenshit when he had a chance to join the military but he sure wants a war inside or outside of the US.

      • SkinlessGenderlessMan

But let’s not forget the 200 protesters arrested on January 20th, who were charged in February and then DOJ upped the charges 2 months later. It is the apparent basis for the DOJ obtaining a (still sealed) search warrant against DreamHost for the personal information of 1.3 million people who visited disruptj20.org….DreamHost filed a motion to quash the warrant and a hearing was held yesterday. This chilling effort by Trump and the Leprechaun are an affront to the First Amendment, both speech and assembly.

One would think reenactors would be more aware of the fine line they walk, not more ignorant of it.

The Dakar Rally? Moving it to South America just isn’t the same.

  • clairence

I have a solution that might make a lot of people very happy. We should give them their ‘white state’ by moving all their sorry asses to south Florida, esp along the coast. Let mother earth gradually eat away at their coasts. Then we build that beautiful wall between them and us. They can even have our President to get started.

    • Ω cynmac’s reclaiming her time

Why punish Miami like that? We should move them all to the conservative part of FL, The Panhandle, or to East Texas.

Florida is a horrible and evil place. It is legal to have a rifle range in your back yard there and you arent responsible for people getting shot because of it:

They have since changed the law, but over and over again the most hardcore right wing authoritarian element is able to pass laws there. Racism is strange in Florida as well, it doesnt break into the normal black/white fracture lines.

Most Canadians can pass as ‘one of them’ so maybe it wouldnt be as bad for you. Personally, going to Montreal (for me) at any time, rain, snow or sunshine is fine by me, lol. Why you would give up Canadian sanity for sun in the home of the Lizard People is beyond me, lol.

  • I’m glad that this rally didn’t end in violence because I don’t trust either side not to be violent at this point (and neither did the Mayor of Boston who specifically said “let’s not counter hate than hate”). I’m not making a comment on which side is more right, I just believe that both sides have committed violence or escalated situations and I don’t believe some of the things the left has done have been justified (leaving death threats to family members of people who marched in Charlottesville, vandalizing people’s homes are both unjustified, come on, how come you guys on the left aren’t actively condemning this?).

That is true that Donald Trump is bad for free speech, but Luke also did not say he supported the president. It’s also a fair statement that the KKK doesn’t own the rally. There’s a difference between valuing a group’s right to speak vs marching alongside them on their goals.

Coincidentally, I’ve donated money to the ACLU and they happened to call me two nights ago to ask about renewing my membership and as I understood it, the ACLU doesn’t condone leaving death threats or condoning violence with more violence or hate. I believe anyone should be able to say anything in a public forum, and it’s not any sort of national crisis if liberals are just more and more uncomfortable. Inciting violence is where you draw a line but saying “white people are better than black people” or whatever, is stupid and wrong, but it’s not an inciting of violence. I need to research more details of Charlottesville.

    • jesterpunk

I believe anyone should be able to say anything in a public forum, and it’s not any sort of national crisis if liberals are just more and more uncomfortable.

The right wants to treat minorities as second class citizens and remove their rights, that is why us liberals are uncomfortable with it. Also white supremacists and Nazis threaten, harass and attack minorities and have even killed someone. They show up to rallies openly carrying guns, bats, sticks and other weapons and hide more weapons around the town too (see Charlottesville).

      • OK, but I do believe that we are capable of doing wrong too. I know we’re on the right side of history but I don’t believe that gives us a right to be assholes.

        • jesterpunk

I saw you said earlier you didnt see what happened in Charlottesville, this happened pretty early in the day in a parking garage connected to the police station. The police didnt do anything and where staying back because the right had a lot of guns on them and where better armed then the police. The police also still haven’t found any of his attackers a week later.

          http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/white-supremacists-continue-target-badly-beaten-deandre-harris-article-1.3423236

        • Bill Diaz

Then why are you defending assholes? No one here supports the use of violence or is trying to offer any support for the armed antifa punks that I believe are funded by Mercer (and others) money. Your attempt at manufacturing equivalency is just as pathetic as Trump’s.

          Have a great day!

          • Well, I think we should throw “Moral equivalency” out the window as far as fallacious arguments go. Wrong is wrong and right is right. If liberals do something wrong, liberals should call it out.

Our country is built on defending the right of speech. I donated to the ACLU and they agree. If no one hear supports violence or death threats, than I couldn’t be more happy.

        • HarpyLibtart

Let’s not start with “we” – you’re not we.
As someone whose ancestors were slaves, I have ZERO interest in finding ‘common ground’ with racists/white nationalists/the KKK.
“Centrism” is not a liberal position, it is the epitome of white privilege to be able to take the attitude “I’m not directly affected by any of these issues, so I can afford to sit above the situation and plaintively cry “why can’t we all just get along”?”.
If you march with Nazi’s/KKK members, it is absolutely OK to assume that you hold the same views and as such, pose an immediate and existential threat both to minority persons in the street and society as a whole.
Nobody should respond to a person’s choice to align themselves with domestic terrorists with more threats of violence, but this ‘both sides do it’ nonsense is just more cover for racists to use when they try to play the victim after being rightly censured for their unconscionable philosophies.

          • Also just to clarify, my grandfather got thrown into prison twice, grandmother had to practice faith secretly, spit out non kosher food, used false passports to sneak out of iran and into Israel, 9 of 13 siblings died before reaching adulthood.

I do recognize that my grandparents incredible story doesn’t affect me that much today in the US since I’m light skinned and wouldn’t be racially profiled

      • First a little form letter: I hope you all don’t mind me sending out a cut and paste
time response in the name of efficiency. I found myself pleasantly surprised in
these responses by the civility and the way I wasn’t dismissed or branded as a
negative thing (like a racist or idiot) because of my thoughts and concerns in
response to these events. I still think we need to watch liberals need to watch
their message and how to make sure that they’re matching calls for
inclusiveness with tolerance of other people’s opinions and to me this was
        reassuring conversation.

Second, I don’t see the good in overgeneralizing. I’m not the experts: Do all right rallies have people wielding firearms?

        • jesterpunk

Boston didnt because their permit said no weapons, which is also why they only had a few dozen people show up. But in states that allow them to carry they will be armed with guns.

    • SadDemInTex

You need to research more details of what happened in Charlottesville”….I’m speechless. You could research what happened in Germany leading up to WWII…there were a lot of people that just could not be sure what that smoke was emanating out of the concentration camps…they needed to get more information and details…and those trains…what on earth happened to all those people on those trains??????

    • Bill Diaz

Im pretty sure no one here is falling for your sophistry and bullshit, you seem very much to me like a right wing idiot trying to put on the language and attitudes of people who do care about human rights, thinking it will heighten your influence.

The only question I have is, who is paying the ‘antifa’ idiots to show up? It was very telling that the heavily armed Nazi boy was broke once he lost Pay-Pal.

But you arent one of us, you dont care about what we do and your commentary is both false and obviously so.

      Have a great day!

      • Fine, I will accept that I’m not one of you. That’s fair. I’m more of a centrist who thinks the key to the country doing well is finding common grounds between both sides and having centrist lawmakers, so yes, that’s different than your philosophy and I apologize if I disguised myself as one of you. My concerns for the democratic party are more for you winning strategically. I think you’re on the right side of history, but I also think that doesn’t excuse you from doing wrong or stupid things that set your causes back.

I will say that I’ve voted democrat in every election except on where I abstained because the tone of discourse was too nasty for me. I also have called a number of Republican senators since Trump got elected and visited their offices personally (including Risch, Graham, Pat Roberts, Orrin Hatch, Mark Rubio, Mike Lee) protesting policies (including the transgender ban, and am particularly enraged by Islamophobia as well) and the firing of Comey. And I donate to the ACLU and am considering joining.

    • phoenix00

I wasn’t there, but judging from the FB feed of a couple friends that were, same story went down in Van-city as Boston. A small number of neo-nazis completely drowned out by The Good Guys. A few punches and shoves thrown but the cops kept a good lid on things.

Heard the mayor also got off his high bike (figuratively – he has a predilection of wet-dreaming out bike lanes all over here) and spoke for the counter-protest.

  • A general question:

To what degree are we shunning an idea/movement, and trying to actively destroy the lives of individual members (even ones who clearly appear contrite). The Boston University student who had to withdraw from college because of death threats, he does not deserve that, especially if our side is complaining about enduring death threats. He deserves to go to college. People at the college can not associate with him, he can have a one strike your out possibility on any future hate speech considering his past, but I think this kind of scorched earth/no mercy tactic will just drive these people underground.

I’m a believer in proper punishment or no punishment. If he did something illegal, lock him up, if you think what he did should be illegal, than try to enact a law leading him to be locked up. If you don’t want to go that route, than accept that he’s still a U.S. citizen and he has rights not to have his life be made into a living hell.

If nothing else, our side is implicitly justifying online harassment as fair game in ideological warfare and you know that women in our movement have been particularly vulnerable to that.

    • Panika MCD

I don’t know that anyone of us Wanks are engaging in death threats. I agree that shunning and/or mocking should be the end of it. but that’s something I have to hold myself to and hope that the proper authorities take care of the rest. I cannot and will not do law enforcement’s job for them.

Death threats are a bit over the top, though my guess is that he’s engaged in some chants that wish that upon others…

IMHO, if you associate with alt right white nationalists, then be prepared to be judged as an alt right white nationalist…

i have no qualms about these people being fired from their jobs, or driven out of the schools they attended, due to their views being beyond reprehensible…

The base of these people’s views is to essentially exterminate the people in the LGBTQ community, the Jews, and people of color..

      • I think a difference between me and others is that I did not specifically see the imagery, I did not see the video. I heard about it second hand, so this all seems extreme for me.

I just finished reading the biography of Rachel Dolezal (who appropriated black culture in 2015 and was met with a certain degree of controversy) and what most people don’t know is that most of the abuse (physical, sexual, emotional, neglectful) was done before she started identifying as black, she’s done a lot of great things for college campuses and students all over the country in starting BSAs, bringing a lot of communities together, and she belives in all that stuff like microagressions, privilege and all that stuff, and she said “white privilege doesn’t preclude white pain” I think what we’re seeing is perhaps some white pain. I know that the current cultural temperature of our country is not favorable to people feeling aggrieved with being white, but there has always been an underserved white class in this country dating back to the colonies.

        Good response though.

        • Anna Rompage

Thank you for the thoughtful response…

If I understand correctly, I get the idea of “White pain” as a lot of the country has been left behind, communities have been forgotten. there’s a ton of people, black, white, red, brown and yellow that are struggling to get by, and of someone is in one those antiquated, mostly white communities, it compounds the issue as their are few sources for income and many of those communities are dying.

With that said, to lay the blame of that at the feet of the Jews, people of color, and the LGBTQ community is misguided to say the least.

Under our constitution, we are all created equal. IMHO, nobody in this country should have a leg up on another due to the cultural group they belong to.

In essence, this struggle goes back to the dawn of civilization, in that our lizard Brian’s are still programmed to be succumb to tribal influences, and to fear the new & unkown.

I feel this glitch in the modern human psyche is what has driven our ancestors & current crop of humankind, to commit some of the most grotesque atrocities against one another…

I don’t mind at all, I love the Wonkette mainly because it’s very close to center and has several articles I refer to “credit where due” when they point out good things that otherwise terrible people do And would be happy for them to get good press. Also too we’ll engage in actual discussion with someone who’s ready to keep the goalposts stationary and not come in swinging.

While I agree we need to set a line for ourselves I also understand every group is going to have it’s assholes. It’s important when judging the left to keep in mind just how small a percentage the troublemakers actually represents. There’s also, understandably, a lot of rage over the resurgence of white supremacy so I can understand where the cheering of violence is coming from but I haven’t met anyone on here I would suspect of seeking out a protester to do them harm.

          • I like the wonkette bc they’re very upfront about their angle, they’re very jokey so it’s not like you’re going for objective news, and they also give credit where creditnisndue

    • SadDemInTex

Stulexington makes an excellent point. It was the Republicans who enacted laws that permit employers to fire people for any reason. Of course they never thought that it would be for white supremacy/Nazi speech…they just wanted to screw gay/transgender/PoC/women,etc. White men were not on that list! It was like the dumbshits who thought they could enact a law against Sharia little realizing it would wreck their ideal of a Xtian theocracy

Specifically here. Yes, you make a point. REpublicans enacted those laws to protect worker power, but to me at least, it’s overstating it to say this is all white patriarchy or this is a an anti-black action. It’s classist in my point of view. Right to work states are pretty much designed to protect the rich. My personal philosophy is that racism and all the other discriminations do exist but it doesn’t explain anything and everything.

        • Husband Of Mrs God

Republicans don’t give a shit about worker power, don’t kid yourself.

        • Husband Of Mrs God

And then you acknowledge the purpose of right-to-work law.
Whether bigotry explains anything or not, there can be no tolerance for bigoted policy.

          • I agree, but I think it’s just best to call it bad policy rather than bigoted policy unless you have good evidence that it was made with bigoted intent or you could call it disenfranchisement policy. It dilutes the word to overuse it and imagines Washington as some dichotomy where all laws are made along some spectrum of does this benefit blacks or not when there are a lot of important factors that need to be considered. There are, for example, legitimate arguments, that at a certain point, affirmative action, hurts both black and white people, and people who respectfully delve into that discussion deserve to enter that space without fear of being ostracized as racist.

    • pixeloid

Why do you think he got death threats? Because he said so? Odd that within hours of the protest he was popping up in news interviews, instead of say, filing police reports. Typically upon receiving death threats, the police and/or FBI will tell you NOT to talk about it, especially in the news. Unless I hear statements from someone credible, I’m going to assume he’s just looking to cash in and become famous.
Oh, he may have gotten a few lovely death wishes, perhaps some helpful suicide advice, but actual death threats? I’m going to need to see some evidence. I’m just one of those skeptics who doesn’t take neo-Nazis at their word.

    • Alan

I’m sure he made it up. But, more generally, nobody is harassing anyone. One should always assume that things they do in public will become public knowledge.

    • Manders

I sincerely hope he did not get death threats; if he had to withdraw for that reason, I hope it is an anomaly. Death threats are horrible and should not be used, ever. Although, there are writers who get death threats regularly and carrry on with their lives, so I’m not sure I entirely trust his story.

But I find that reinforcing the idea that it is a shameful thing to be associated wish Neo Nazis / white supremacists / etc. is preferable to violence.

I drink my coffee black, but if I know I may not love it, I’ll put a little cream in it just to cut the yuck taste. I once did that at Dunkin’ Donuts and did not realize they were going to put the cream in FOR me. Holy crap. It was undrinkable.

        • Husband Of Mrs God

          Oh, you ordered Regular. :)

          • DoILookAmused2u? Résistance☨

Those who scream the loudest about their rights under the constitution know the least about what those rights actually are.

  • James Baskin

“What they want is the ability to say horrible things without anyone “silencing” them by telling them that they are a jerk.”

Not just say horrible things, but also to do horrible things. As in ‘religious freedom’, ‘stand your ground’, ‘abortion doctor murder’, etc.
