Who wants to hang out with a bunch of elitist CEOs and artists and preachers anyway! Not Donald Trump, that’s for sure! Like Marilyn Monroe always said, if they’re not going to stick by you when you defend Nazis, then they don’t deserve you at your best! What Trump’s best might look like is anyone’s guess, but this week was most assuredly NOT IT.

None of Your Business!

This week, American business did the math and noped the hell out of the Trump administration. CEOs aren’t paid to have a conscience — that is not their job. If they’re bailing on a seat at the Trump table, it’s because Trump has become toxic for business.

After Trump’s first mealy-mouth statement Sunday on the Nazi riot, Merck CEO Ken Frazier quit the President’s Manufacturing Council. Under Armour CEO Kevin Planck and Intel’s Brian Krzanich tapped out shortly after.

Whatever, Losers! Trump tweeted. It’s not like there aren’t a hundred other hotties lining up for a date with the Prom Queen!

Then on Wednesday, reporters stuck a mic in his face to discuss Infrastructure Week, and Donald Trump took advantage of the opportunity to lose his damn mind on live television. Some of those Nazis are very fine people, doncha know!

At which point the remaining CEOs on the President’s Strategy and Policy Forum huddled up and decided it was time to GTFO. But before their press release went live, Donald Trump hopped on his Twitterphone to say, You can’t break up with me, because I’m breaking up with you!

Baller move, Dude! If you’re in the seventh grade. But if you’re the 71-year-old President of the United States, you just provoke a dozen CEOs to issue separate press releases saying exactly why they did too break up with you first. Per CNN,

Some top executives sought to make clear that they resigned from the advisory councils before Trump stepped in to dissolve them.

“Alex Gorsky had made his decision to resign from the council earlier today before the president’s tweet. As we said in our previous statement, the president’s remarks yesterday equating those who are motivated by race-based hate with those who stand up against hatred were unacceptable,” Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
pre
[JPMorgan CEO Jamie] Dimon also put out a statement to show that he “personally supported” breaking up the Strategic and Policy Forum.

“I strongly disagree with President Trump’s reaction to the events that took place in Charlottesville over the past several days,” Dimon said.

And General Electric (GE) chairman Jeff Immelt said he notified members of the manufacturing council this morning that he “could no longer serve.”

And the President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities said, HOLD MY BEER!

Donald Trump had appointed Melania as honorary chair of the committee and asked the members to stay on in January. But this week, all sixteen members submitted a scathing letter of resignation.

Reproach and censure in the strongest possible terms are necessary following your support of the hate groups and terrorists who killed and injured fellow Americans in Charlottesville. The false equivalencies you push cannot stand. The Administrations refusal to quickly and unequivocally condemn the cancer of hatred only further emboldens those who wish America ill. We cannot sit idly by, the way your West Wing advisors have, without speaking out against your words and actions.

And they left him a hidden, secret love note!

SUBTLE.

Donald Trump tried again to play it off like he was the one dumping those moocher artists.

Earlier this month it was decided that President Trump will not renew the Executive Order for the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities (PCAH), which expires later this year. While the committee has done good work in the past, in its current form it simply is not a responsible way to spend American tax dollars.

Because he doesn’t understand how Twitter works, we guess?

Anyone Else?

OF COURSE THERE IS!

Yesterday, the first member of Trump’s informal evangelical advisory council jumped ship as well. Let’s not get sidetracked on the fact that Big Business showed more spine than the country’s “moral leaders.” Brooklyn Megachurch Pastor A.R. Bernard announced that he’s off the Trump Train, and we are grateful.

Also on Friday, billionaire investor Karl Icahn decided that chitchatting with Trump while Hannity cuts to commercial wasn’t worth the headache. Who knew that advising the government on deregulation that might benefit your gazillion dollar business might present an ethical conflict!

Or maybe he was actually fired? Poppy, if you want to make it clear that you’re the dumper rather than the dumpee, you’re going to have to try harder!

Fiftieth Time’s A Charm!

But finally on Saturday Donald Trump managed to successfully You’re Fired someone first. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks!

Of this year’s five Kennedy Center honorees, Norman Lear, Lionel Richie, and dancer Carmen de Lavallade had already announced that they were boycotting the White House reception. LL Cool J was on the fence. And Gloria Estefan said she was going just to ask the president to be less of a raging asshole on immigration – well, she didn’t use the word asshole, but we assume she was thinking it. Who could have predicted that three African Americans, a Latinx and a Jew would get so pissy about a guy who hangs out with white supremacists!

Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement this morning saying that Mr. and Mrs. Trump were going to just order up some takeout and watch Netflix instead of going to the Kennedy Center Gala, “to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction.”

MIGHTY WHITE OF THEM INDEED.

    • Wojciech

I used to work at JP Morgan, and I am sadly well aware of how much of a colossal asshole Jamie Dimon himself is. For starters, Dimon’s egotism is at least equal to Trump’s.

So if JAMIE DIMON can’t abide Trump any more … then again, maybe there’s just not enough oxygen on the planet to properly aerate a room with his and Trump’s egos in it simultaneously.

      • Those are the non (ish) fiction shelves under my blu-ray collection

        • Suttree

I also watch Ancient Aliens. I think it’s a hoot! But really, I saw a bookcase and had to inspect. You have a decent camera and I could blow it up. It is the first thing that I do when I go to someone’s house is checkout the bookcase. A very nice selection though. The only other person that I know with the 9/11 report is my father, and he is a madman with books. You can barely walk into his office because he has 5 foot tall stacks of books on the floor. Every bookcase is stacked 2 books deep. So did you read it, or is it just shelf dressing?

          • I read about 2/3 of it when it was first released. It was really depressing

          • Suttree

I almost borrowed my father’s copy and said fuck it. You are a better person that I.

          • Suttree

But anyway, I have decided that I wanted to date women based on their bookshelves before. :)

          • NastyBossetti

I’ve only dated one dude who didn’t have any books on display in his home, and he was a horrible person.

          • Suttree

I don’t have a huge display because I have moved too much, but I quickly build up a new shelf. I feel bad though. The two books that I gave Lizzie, she didn’t like either one. :( And they were two favorites. Eh, we all don’t like the same stuff.

          • NastyBossetti

I mean literally no books. Not one on the nightstand, not in a cabinet somewhere, not one borrowed from the library. And this was well before there were e-readers.

          • Suttree

That’s scary! I had a good friend who wasn’t a big reader, but he had a whole bunch of art books.

          • NastyBossetti

He had a pretty large music collection, which I was into until I discovered that it was mostly hardcore and straightedge bands. Like I need to listen to dudes being sanctimonious about hanging out with their friends while not drinking or doing drugs!

          • Suttree

I like to listen to Fugazi when I’m rather drunk. Other than that, I have no idea. I am sorry that happened to you!

          • NastyBossetti

I like Fugazi and Minor Threat. (I make an appearance in the Fugazi documentary that every once in a while someone I know will post to my Facebook timeline asking if it’s me.) But it felt like there were a million “different” sXe bands that all sounded the same, saying the same thing. Anyway, that is way in the past now!

          • Suttree

Hehe. When I was stoned out of my mind in high school I listened to them. I had no idea that they were straight edge. All of that crap pretty much sounds the same now.

          • TEX Dept. of Space Tacos

hanging out with their friends while not drinking or doing drugs!

…while takling about how they don’t drink or do drugs. God forbid they were vegans too!

          • DirtyHippyLiberal

I dated someone like that once. When she saw my 5’x7′ bookcase (that I built my very own self) absolutely full of books, she looked at me wide-eyed and asked if I had read them all.

The answer was yes and we did not date for long.

          • I don’t think having my nooks reasonably on shelves is “on display”, just sensible storage. And if you fon’t have at least 5 favourite books, you’re not reading enough

          • Suttree

I used to have a friend that was rather intelligent. He was a very good artist but he never read books. He never read anything! After about a decade I got him to watch the national new and read the NYT. He was a much better man for it. I still could never interest him in a novel though. At least I did that for my former best friend.

          • kareemachan

True story: my BFF visited her husband’s relatives in Arkansas, and she was shocked by the one trend she saw at their houses: the only books were a Bible and RD Condensed books.

Also, she was shocked by deep-fried dill pickles, but that’s a different story.

          • NastyBossetti

Fried pickles are delicious, but the only place that should have the bible as its only book is a hotel room.

          • kareemachan

Early in the administration it seemed like it would be a bad idea for people to resign en masse. I hope that we have reached the point where that seems like the reasonable option. the CEO walkouts have been so delicious because you know trump thinks those are his big money buddies. he’s the “businessman president”.

and like $5F said, the CEOs couldn’t give a shit about the morality of the decision – they did this because association with the Trump brand was going to lose them money. People like the Merck guy and Icahn could have made so much money by pushing Trump for deregulation/tax breaks, but they did a quick cost-benefit analysis and decided Trump was still too poisonous.

      • Celtic_Gnome

As has been said, after the August recess, they have to appear to try to pass a budget and deal with the debt ceiling, so no “tax reform” this year. No way they’re going to deal with that shit next year with the midterms, and our CEO’s have to bet that Donnie can rally the troops to maintain and/or increase the Republican majority in Congress, and then they might get “tax reform” in 2019.

For all they know, Donnie might decide to run attack ads against Republican incumbents in the genera election.

Surprisingly, Pat Robertson is NOT on that “council” – at least not as originally compiled back in June ( was it only June? Apparently, this is not the same group as he convened to support the inauguration, or the National Prayer Breakfast, two similar groups ). This is the one that includes Jerry Falwell, Jr., James Dobson, Michele Bachmann, Robert Jeffress, Richard Land of the SBC ( who made some very reacist comments in the wake of the Trayvon Martin murder ), Ralph Reed…

A temporal vortex has once again opened up in the void of Trump’s skull:

President Donald Trump wished his former chief strategist Steve Bannon well upon his return to the conservative website Breitbart News, tweeting Saturday, “Fake News needs the competition!”

Bannon will be a “tough and smart new voice @BreitbartNews … maybe even better than ever before,” Trump wrote.

How can Bannon be new and better than before? How can Trump take a shower and not drown?

i’ve got 15 teeth of a chainring on my right calf, to celebrate 15 years of cycling.

16 years ago, i was stressed out, working for a psychopathic boss, overweight, high blood pressure, and barely able to keep up with my 5 year old son.

so, i dragged that dusty old sears 10 speed out of the basement and went for a ride – 5 whole miles. i was sore as hell the next day, but i got up and did it again, and again, and again.

i rode my first century on my 50th birthday, and last week, my cardiologist said my bp was good enough to stop taking meds.

i have no doubt that cycling saved my life and those 15 teeth remind me to get up at 5am for the dawn patrol (well, that and the cats).

You’re not a weeaboo if you’re not obsessive about it and insufferable, are you? • Mr. Blobfish

Much like his boss, Bannon was a dunce as well.

    • Bub, the cynical zombie

      This passage blows me away:

Days after Trump’s election, a giddy Bannon told the Hollywood Reporter that he was an “economic nationalist,” and then went on to explain what he meant:
“The globalists gutted the American working class and created a middle class in Asia … If we deliver … we’ll get 60 percent of the white vote, and 40 percent of the black and Hispanic vote and we’ll govern for 50 years …

“The globalists” Bannon? Like Trump and his family? Who manufacture their products overseas and bring in foreign workers on H2B visas to staff their U.S. businesses? I have never understood how that son of a bitch can sell a “Buy American” line to his supporters in the face of this. Are they all too fucking stupid to understand the hypocrisy? Or is it all forgiven because it “pisses off liberals?”

What a sad pass the United States of America has come to.

      • Yes to both those last.

      • Suttree

Strauss-Howe generational theory states that human events can be loosely organized in terms of recurring eighty year cycles, or saecula, which unfold in four twenty year turnings.

The first turning is a season of rebirth, social unity and building new institutions. In our current American generational cycle the first turning is the post World War II period. This is followed by a second turning, characterized by a spiritual awakening and a general rejection of the previous turning’s values, which we saw begin in the 60’s. The third turning is a time of unraveling, where society loses faith in institutions and business as usual. And the fourth turning, which for us began with the financial crisis of 2007, is a time of breakdown where social institutions collapse and the way is cleared for the next first turning.

Two issues with that: 1) this theory is based on American history – so their “sample set” of 80-year periods on which to base their “cyclical” is really too small for statistical validity. The WIki piece on this theory claims that the authors have presented “other” cycles from history to support their American history – but, that really doesn’t validate their hypothesis then, does it?

The second issue is that the WIki piece says this:
“Steve Bannon, Chief Strategist and Senior Counselor to President Trump is a prominent proponent of the theory. As a documentary filmmaker Bannon discussed the details of Strauss-Howe generational theory in Generation Zero.”

No offense, but any “theory” that Steve Bannon “supports” is likely to be a racist piece of pseudo-scholarship on the order of the orginal “eugenics” that so much of the rightwing likes to denounce as a “liberal ideology” – IOW, nothing but bullshit!

The troll’s response was that 1) someone should have identified that in the photo and 2) that other Wonkettes seemed to think it was in Boston – but did he back away from his bullshit about “judging” the guy because of his clothes?

This comment over at DKos has been eating away at me since yesterday. This is a so-called progressive trying to give Trump the benefit of the doubt for his obscene post-Charlottesville comments. It’s especially ironic that he included a line about how demonizing people makes you no better than a Nazi, since this is a guy who has done his fair share of demonizing HRC (note the Bernie 2020 avatar).

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/fa6faf6797e3018a90a8b4cac3240f7c60bf229249284aba636a3db3674d24a8.png

    • Cat Cafe for the Prosecution

There is this endless false equivalence assholes make between “spreading hate” and “protesting hate.” They are not the same. They are the exact opposite. “Demonizing” implies the act of portraying someone who is not a demon, as a demon, as the Nazis did to the Jews. But if “demon” isn’t the right word to describe what the Nazis did to the Jews, I don’t know what is.

A mashup of two theme songs would be fitting, one because the two I’m thinking of are both Canadians and two because, well… the first part is not-so-subtle trolling of one of Trump’s core campaign “issues,” while the second part is… well, y’know.

    • Panika MCD

who is he heeling to now that RaspBannon is out?

      • therblig

clearly, bannon was no slouch with the treats:

Teaching your puppy or older dog to heel can be easy and fun. Use this directed shaping technique to help your dog learn to love to walk beside you.

Get a lot of yummy treats, cut up into small pieces. Start inside the house and walk around a spacious room or up and down a hallway.
Call your dog’s name and point to the side that you want him to walk on (whichever side you choose but left is in the traditional heel side).
As soon as your dog comes alongside you, use a clicker or say “yes,” then reward. Do this a couple of times, then stop calling him and pointing your side and allow your dog to willingly come up beside you. Mark and reward for each time your dog comes into position.
Pretty soon, you will need to increase your pace, turn, or zig-zag in an effort to “lose” him so he can find his position again.
As he gets better and better at this, start adding eye contact (“Look” or “Watch Me”).
        Handy Tips:

“Heel” is traditionally on your left side for obedience and rally competitions.
Hold your treat hand at your chest. This will prevent luring (dog just following the food) and jumping while walking if your treat hand is just out of reach.
Be sure to treat with the hand next to your dog to prevent him from crossing in front of you to get the treat.
Always tell your dog when he is correct with a click or a “yes.”

You guys, what the fuck is wrong with Colbert?

I really had hoped he’d learned how wrong and destructive he was in making all those sneering Hillary jokes, and when fucking Hugh Laurie asked him, genuinely, why there was so much insane venom towards such a qualified candidate, and he just snickered and said “you weren’t here in the ’90s” LIKE THE SLANDERS WERE LEGITIMATE and when fucking anti-semite fucker Viggo Mortenson turned his movie-star charisma towards camera and espoused that Hillary was a corrupt terrible person and you HAVE to “vote your conscience” and vote for that Russian tool idiot asshole Jill Stein, and Colbert said NOTHING.

I really thought, after he now sees the fucking consequences of enabling all that shit, and how OBVIOUSLY Hillary would be a stupendous president, and how astonishingly good she would have been even if you don’t “like” her how infinitely better she would be than this fucking trainwreck anti-democracy trainwreck, but NO HE’S STILL DOING FUCKING SHITTING ANTI-HILLARY JOKES! I think we can all agree that Tina Fey didn’t exactly bowl 300 with her cake eating sketch, but this person seems to not realize that a., Fey was lampooning exactly every point she makes about “liberals” in her thread and b., 20,000 anti-Fascists showed up in Boston as opposed to a couple of hundred Nazis — and they brought cake. Just because you don’t get the joke doesn’t mean that everyone else didn’t. Sheesh.

Certainly, the Mike years of MST3K (and he had long been the head writer before becoming the star) had me in stitches. But, for some odd reason, they can’t seem to wrap their brain around a liberal comedian giving literally the worst advice possible might be the joke. Because it reinforces their belief system that liberals are foolish and lazy.

        • Resistance Fighter Astraea

I thought it was great because obviously it’s not what we should do and at the same time sympathetic to the desire to do it, which only helped to point out the absurdity of what we’re forced to deal with right now.

So if this is open thread now, here’s an open-ended (and bluntly-phrased) question, courtesy of BuzzFeed.

How do you look after your mental health when everything goes to shit?

As I said on another thread, I took a break from reading political and news-related stuff here for the past few days, and when I came back there were a bunch of WHOA stories. But eventually the news does get frustrating, and you have to tear away from it. So I find that avoiding current events for as long as I can is helpful. I do watch DVDs and Internet videos of comedy movies and the cartoons I enjoyed as a kid. (I make sure to download anything I watch from YouTube so that I can avoid the comments.)

I read quite a bit, both fiction and nonfiction. I write stuff too, like musical parodies in the vein of Randy Rainbow and Weird Al. On the computer, I have a pretty big audio collection for my iPod that I spend time adding the album artwork and other details (“metadata”) to, so that they show up tagged properly when copied to the player. I make playlists/mixtapes with various themes; for instance I’ve got a folder that just Canadian artists for a Canada-themed mixtape. I put the tag info into video clips too, as I have one of those old iPods that also plays video (albeit Triscuit-sized) on the screen.

I had a Macintosh LC III (Performa 450) when I was a kid (about 1992 or so), and found an emulator app that lets me replicate the experience of when I used to play around with it. Space permitting, I like to tool around with other systems in virtual machine software, like Linux distros and old versions of Windows. I’m very much a homebody to the point of near-recluse, so I don’t get out much, although I probably should. But what I can do, I do at home.

So… anybody else, what do you do to, as the headline reads, “break away from Donald Trump”?

    • Truck Fump

I read, play games on the computer, and work with foster dogs. I don’t get out much but try to make exceptions at least once a week to visit family or friends.

    • WomanInThePersistence

I take Trumpcations. 3-4 days with no news, no interwebs, etc. I might check out the open thread, but only the comments. And I read comforting books.

    • Raan

The Best Friends Zaibatsu and Game Grumps playthroughs, and my collection of Steam games. Oh, plus snarking on Wonkette

Also, I have to assume that not having regular TV or internet right now is saving me from being bombarded by Pelagius’s bullshit every morning.

    • Sean McLaren

Yeah, I wish ours was the kind of home where we could have animal companions. Mom’s allergic to cats and my father’s temperament is and has always been bad enough for the people living here, let alone some poor pup who’d be pissing himself every time the asshole had another tantrum. Videos of adorable fauna are good though; not really the same, but decent enough to get your fuzzy fix :)

        • You could get a really big short-haired dog and when Dad passes out stick hamburger in his pants. Just a thought.

    • The Person.

Make art. Go out on the high desert and shoot at inanimate objects such as barrels and rusted out cars (Using lead abatement rounds, of course.) find new obscure and unusual music. Maybe marijuana? (If you have the necessary medical clearance of course. I wouldn’t recommend breaking the law!!!1!)

      • Three Finger Salute

Nah, even if I lived alone, I make it a point to steer clear of ingesting any mind-altering substances. The entirety of my father’s side of the family were all alcoholics, and he had a brother who was schizophrenic and messed around with everything from weed to acid to PCP and sometimes all at once. Died of a heroin-induced heart attack in a mental institution. So, I’m wary of the potential negative side effects that apparently are a thing for people whose mental health problems aren’t just situational or stress-induced, but hard-wired defects in the brain chemistry. Trudeau’s mom has bipolar, she quit pot on the advice of her doctor and is doing quite well today. Apparently even Miley Cyrus (who is not known to really “have” anything, but is… unusual to say the least) went straight-edge now too. I try to do whatever I can without drugs if possible.

…and then divide by 5 to get the 1% solution.

        • David Chaillou

          Hang the 1%.

          • Division has always been come naturally to me.

          • wait! what?

            …with votes, obviously.

          • David Chaillou

That wouldn’t work, would it? How about “screw the 1%!” then, is that agreeable?

I use one of those shot glass looking teaspoon measuring cups. it’s four ozs.

          • Sean McLaren

            .4 * 4 = 1.6
            12+4=16
            that’d be 10%

          • h4rr4r

Which would be much better than 5%.

        • David Chaillou

Always err on the high side.

    • David Chaillou

      .6 / .35 = 1.72 oz

      • NERD!

      • Sean McLaren

I got lazy and brute forced it, but if anyone is wondering how this works:

        .05 (12 +x) = .4 * x

x is the amount of hard liquor to add, and the sides are equal because they both describe the amount of alcohol in the final drink: the 5% in the final drink will have to equal 40% of the liquor added, since that’s the only source of alcohol.

        .6 + .05x = .4x
        .6 = .35x
        .6 / .35 = x

        • David Chaillou

See also Achilles’ solution above. Works too and you don’t need to use variables.

    • mancityRed6

beer is 5% on average, just have one of those.
or do a shot (or two, or three) and drink the 12 ozs of fluid plain

    • Jamoche

It’s not the percentages, it’s the taste. A lot depends on which two fluids you’re using.

    • Jonny On Maui

      d) Not enough information to solve.

    • WomanInThePersistence

Wine is easy. And does not require math. Just sayin’

      • mancityRed6

and you can add a shot or two of gin to and oh crap I’m back to the math question.

      • Latverian Diplomat

On the contrary, Putting wine in a box decreases its snob appeal by 89%!

        • Jonny On Maui

But takes the volume and storage capability to the max!

          • Latverian Diplomat

It’s funny, but wine packaging is seriously f’ed up because of this.

First off, screw tops are much more practical and reliable than corks.

And the the great thing about box wine is you can dispense it a glass or two at a time, and the rest is protected from oxygen, unlike with an opened bottle. It really is very practical.

But, both of these things are only used for down market wine, and “the good stuff” won’t go near them.

    • h4rr4r

You don’t want a 5% LSD solution. You only want 400 ug.

      • Jonny On Maui

Live a little. Go to 500…

    • Sean McLaren

      about 1.7oz

      .4*1.7=.68
      .68 / (12 + 1.7) = 0.0496blahblah blah

    • Raan

      Enough.

      • OutOfOrbit

        neat or fuck-it LIVE!

        • Raan

Neither. “How much do you add to get to 5%?” Enough. You just add enough, and if it isn’t enough, you add more until it is.

    • Latverian Diplomat

      Set it up as a proportion (.4x)/(12 + x) = 5/100
      Cross multiply: 60 + 50x =40 x
      X’s on one side: 60 = 35 x
      x = 12/7, about 1.7 oz

      • Rick Hill

No, no, no. The thing is for you to think, not me. My religion has strict rules concerning doing maths, anyway

        • Latverian Diplomat

Mix a man a cocktail, he drinks for a few minutes. Teach a man to mix cocktails, and there goes there goes his liver.

    • David Chaillou

You could also do it Achilles’ way:
      – The ratio of 5 to 40 is one-eighth
      – add one eighth of the 12 oz –> 1.5 oz
      – add one eighth of the 1.5 oz –> .1875 oz
      – add one eighth of the .1875 –> .023475
      – etc
After an infinity of steps, you get the solution. Achilles never catches the tortoise, and you’ll never get your drink if you don’t invite Isaac to the party.

      • Rick Hill

But how much do you have to pour on your heel?

        • David Chaillou

No, the heel is the only part that stays dry.

Ezra Levant somehow tanks white supremacist website during most racist time in recent memory

      Meanwhile…

Oh Simon is one of my favorites. I’ve been enjoying reading about the pathetic saga of Ezra’s downfall and Simon’s cartoons make it all the more enjoyable.

Anyone wondering where the donation money is going might want to have a look at this too:

          http://frankmag.ca/2017/05/whose-house-ezra-derangement-edition/

Levant (v.): To run away, typically leaving unpaid debts.

Bruising days for Ezra Levant, as the Rebel Obergrüppenfuhrer stares down an ad-shaming campaign by Sleeping Giants, the anti-racist buzzkill collective, which claims to have driven a reported 2,000 online advertisers away from fake news stalwart Breitbart, and now threatens to do the same to its dumber Canadian cousin.

Add to these travails the abrupt departure of Jack Posobiec, bonkers Pizzagate provocateur and Rebel’s short-lived “Washington Bureau Chief” amidst the MacronLeaks and Seth Rich shitshows, the arrest of Ezra’s UK-based senior skinhead, Tommy Robinson, and the usual ongoing defamation dramas, and one wonders how the little pisher manages to get up and put on his jackboots some mornings.

No doubt at times like this Ez’ closes his eyes and thinks of his idyllic home life with his delightful second wife, Irina, and their expensively private-schoold son and two daughters, all joyfully anticipating the completion of their dream home in Forest Hill.

The House of Ezra, still under construction, is (in a prudent bit of judgment-proofing by the litigation-prone Lügenpants) registered in Irina’s name.

The Levants snapped up the property for a mere $1.6 mil in 2014, while Ezra was still drawing a regular Sun TV paycheque. The purchase, the bulldozing of the existing shack and the construction of a new monster home were financed with a $2.5 million mortgage from Scotiabank.

Last October, they took out a second $1.2 million mortgage with the delightfully-named Gonad Holdings Inc. (Put Your Glands in the Hands of the Man!) Gonad is squeezing Ezra for interest-only payments at eight per cent per annum, or $8,000 a month.

Alas, as with all things Ezra, nothing is as simple as it seems, and even as ongoing work on the Levant dream home continues to disturb the peace of long-suffering neighbours, irate tradesmen are complaining of being bilked and lawyering up.

Diamondwood Management Inc., project manager of the construction from June 2015 until their replacement last October (right around the time of that second mortgage with Gonad) claims the Levants are still into them for $184,972.84.

“To date, Diamondwood has made numerous demands for payment from Levant for the outstanding amounts owed to Diamondwood in respect of the labour and materials that it supplied in relation to the Project,” reads the statement of claim, drawn up by legalists Jonathan Goode and Kayla Kwinter (Torkin Maines LLP) and filed at the Toronto courthouse Apr. 24.

Further down Ezra’s dine-and-dash food chain, Jcon Design Build, Inc., hired to do the actual construction, filed their own suit Apr. 27, naming Diamondwood, Irina, Gonad and Scotiabank as defendants. They claim to be out $118,650 for work completed. E. Alan Garbe, barrister and solicitor, is leading the legal charge.

“In or around June 2015, Jcon entered into an agreement with Diamondwood whereby Jcon would construct a house… construction included exterior walls, masonry work, plumbing, electrical work and drywall but not finishing work. Jcon was advised that the work on the Project on or about September 1, 2015. In October 2016, Jcon was advised that Diamondwood was being replaced as the construction manager for the Project and Jcon was asked to issue a final invoice for the remainder of its work.”

Jcon says it was asked to stay on to ensure a smooth transition, wrapped up its work in January, with everything completed but the drywall (to be completed by a new company) and sent its final bill. They’re still waiting.

So far, no response from Ezra or his counsel to any of these allegations, which are clearly all the result of an unfortunate misunderstanding. After all, unlike his hero, Der Donald Trump, who has left legions of suppliers, contractors, and assorted rubes sucking the pipe, our Ezra’s a man of his word and would shurely never renege on a debt or contractual obligation. Shurely.

Out of an abundance of caution, however, both Diamondwood and Jcon applied for construction liens on Casa Levant in March.

The house hasn’t been assessed yet, but real estate experts from Frankland Capital Corporation predict that by the time the dust settles, it’ll clock in around $4-million.

Once the litigation is cleared up, Ezra and the Mrs. plan to hold an open house to thank all those Rebel supporters who donated their savings to countless Rebel fundraisers that have helped the Lügenpants family live high on the hog (shurely “happily ever after”?! -ed.)

          This hoser is so hosed…

          • Dang. Does EVERY right wing nut stiff their workers? Is that like a pre-req or something?

So, Geraldo lists some things, as opposed to ALL THE THINGS, and claims that now, with Steve Bannon gone, Trump will finally be a president for everyone, and he thanks Kelly for getting rid of Bannon.

…But, wait. Why couldn’t Trump have gotten rid of Steve Bannon his own damned self? Why did someone else have to do it? Is it because Trump is a sniveling, weak little bastard who can’t do anything? How is THAT man going to accomplish ANYTHING, if he can’t “You’re Fired!” someone when it was so critical for him to do so?

I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said:”Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert . . .Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
      The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
      My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,

They are trying to get money so he can go to Liberty University. No other school in the country will accept him. That says a lot about that schools acceptance policies.

          • the only school that will be able to accept his current college course credits.

“Allen Armentrout said he came to Charlottesville to honor and defend the Confederate general, but said he completely disagrees with the views expressed at the weekend’s Unite the Right rally and condemned the events that resulted in the death of 32-year-old Charlottesville resident Heather Heyer.”

What Allen doesn’t understand is the general doesn’t deserve honor and cannot be defended.

He was a traitor to his country and a criminal against humanity.

Allen’s saying he deplores Unite the Right is rather weak tea when they and the general are such soul mates.

In America and Europe citizens have become self obsessed, lazy, fat, demanding, spoiled, loud, controlling, egotistical and mentally ill. Feminism, homosexuality, atheism, hedonism, and transgender-ism are being promoted while the hard work and priorities of family and faith have all but died away and this pattern is killing us, physically and spiritually.

I’m finding it hard to believe even a FORMER feminist would believe these things. I’m thinking she’s claiming to be a former feminist for street cred, not that she has actually read a damn thing about feminism.

          • Well of course.
Not to mention there are plenty of feminists, homosexuals, et al who work hard, believe in family (enough to fight for it, fuckers! And win!) and have faith.

White supremacist attitudes are morally wrong and sinful, and we condemn them. Church members who promote or pursue a “white culture” or white supremacy agenda are not in harmony with the teachings of the Church.

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/aug/19/a-letter-to-my-american-friends-when-did-the-dream-die

“Putin must just love Trump. The president’s irresponsible repudiation of the Paris climate accord had epic consequences. It achieved something America’s enemies have only hitherto dreamt of: uniting the entire world against the US. He pulled off a similar trick at the recent G7 summit.

Thanks to Trump, America’s worldwide authority is shot, or nearly so. And the longer Trump rampages unchecked, the worse the damage gets. Opinion polls show confidence in American leadership to be at a low point all around the world.”

    • Panika MCD

except for the part where Russia has stood by the Paris Climate Accord…

I had to find out what it is.

      13.Aye-aye

You would be surprised to know that the aye-aye has the ability to extract food from the tree trunks using their fingers. This is a very unique feature of the animal. They tap on the trees few times and based on the echo that is produced make holes inside using their teeth. Once they have made the hole in the tree, the food is taken out using their fingers.

They usually search for their foods during the night time. They like to take occasional breaks in between their work. The aye-aye has the ability to climb trees through vertical leaps that can be done successively. You would be shocked to find out that the aye-aye can cross up to 4 kilometers per night.

      • Panika MCD

I would not be surprised by any of that because I already knew it.

It is expensive, and we’ve probably maxed out the credit card but, my mother and I were desperate because we were packing enough pounds to become ill. Myself less than her, but still chunky. Probably going to cancel it after this month because, while I haven’t lost all that I want, family financial situation has changed bigly (my father screwed up again) and I found out you can buy some of the food (bars, shakes, etc.) at Wally World, so much cheaper to do that instead. “Trump is the boy in the bubble”
    http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/18/opinions/trump-bubble-opinion-dantonio/index.html

“Others who have occupied the White House have complained of the bubble it creates around them. Trump (who is, incidentally, a self-described germaphobe) seems to enjoy it.

But this isolation is a big problem. As President, Trump continues to play with the fire of bigotry, as he always has. The Bubble allows him to do this with little apparent regard for how it affects the lives of the people he now governs.

In the aftermath of Charlotteseville, the President has shown he would rather frighten his fellow Americans — possibly, as his now ex-chief strategist Steve Bannon has said, for political advantage — and degrade the nation’s standing in the world than admit he is mistaken and serve the country he has sworn to lead.

He seems oblivious to the pain felt by others, as if he has spent so much time away from or ignoring those with different points of view that he is no longer aware that they exist.”

    • David Hollenshead

Our Führer Trump is oblivious to the pain he has caused others, and he thinks that he is now “king”. If we are still a Nation of Law, the trial for a Capital Crime awaits him, his son and son in law…….

    • Bub, the cynical zombie

Seems oblivious to the pain felt by others?” Of course he’s oblivious. Other people – with the possible exception of his own children – are like pieces on a game board to him. He does not have an empathetic or compassionate bone in his fucking body.

      • with the possible exception of his own children

Objection! All indications are that his own children are game pieces as well and only worth what they bring to him

Is this country dumb? Yes. Recent pool says 62% of Americans(I’m assuming most were whites) think the confederate monuments should remain.

    • Michael R
    • Wolf Tracker

How do black conservatives feel about Confederate monuments? It’s complicated

      http://www.salon.com/2017/08/18/some-black-politicians-want-to-keep-the-civil-war-memorials-standing/

      • II Gosala

        Not that complicated, actually

Sandra Crenshaw, a former city council member in Dallas, believes removing the memorials is futile. Crenshaw, who is black, has aligned herself with Buffalo Soldier historians and Sons of Confederate Veterans to create a predominantly black group that is working to protect Confederate memorials, such as the Confederate War Memorial, which sits at the heart of the city. The group argues that removing the statues would be a useless act guided by the false notion it will cure racism.

But no one is saying removing the statues will erase racism. That’s a straw man.

What we are saying is that the statues glorify what ought not to be glorified. They promote what ought not to be promoted.

        • Wolf Tracker

So you don’t want to listen to anyone that has a history connected to those memorial and it is your way or not at all.

I understood your position the first time. Maybe you should try and understand theirs.

          • II Gosala

So you don’t want to listen to anyone that has a history connected to those memorial[s]

Why do you assume I have no connection to these memorials? You know nothing about me.

You’re the one who argued against jumping to conclusions and yet here you are jumping to conclusions.

Further, I listened, but found the reasoning flawed. Can you point to anyone who says taking the statues down will eliminate racism? I don’t think you can, but prove me wrong.

What do you make of the mayor of Richmond?

            At first he said

Mayor Levar Stoney of Richmond, Virginia — another black politician — made a similar argument. Last week, he said he decided to keep the Confederate statues lining the city’s Monument Avenue standing

But not long after he tweeted

These monuments should be part of our dark past and not of our bright future. I personally believe they are offensive and need to be removed

Is he disconnected from the statues in his city? Is he unwilling to listen? Is he a dogmatic “my way or the highway”?

I understood your position the first time.

What, have we had a back and forth about this? No we have not. So where this comes from, I can’t imagine; unless you’re getting confused and frustrated by your constant trolling.

Yes, trolling. I’ve read your comment history, and I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.

But no more. Now, I’m convinced you troll every site pushing ideas that are disruptive, not because you have a moral center but because you enjoy being disruptive.

Or rather, you think you enjoy being disruptive. In fact you’re fragile and break wherever confronted by facts, reason or ethics.

I’ve seen this happen to you on sites left and right.

    • I have decided I am fine with keeping them.

You know, hosting a Nazi website isnt a great way to advertise your business and its not funny.

    https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/08/spurned-by-major-firms-daily-stormer-returns-with-help-from-a-startup/

The neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer was back online Friday with help from a small company whose founder said he wanted to defend free speech and raise the commercial profile of his new venture.

The Daily Stormer was dumped by several Internet service providers this week after it posted a story mocking the appearance of Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old woman killed last Saturday in Charlottesville. By mid-week, the site was accessible only through what is known as the dark web, a corner of the Internet that is not easily accessible to ordinary users.

Nick Lim, the 20-year-old founder of the company BitMitigate, said he offered his services to Daily Stormer founder Andrew Anglin because he believes in free speech, but also to get the word out about his company, which protects websites from so-called denial of services attacks that overwhelm Internet servers.

“People should be given the right to express their ideas,” he said, adding: “I thought it would really get my service out there.”

According to Lim, he was monitoring news reports and learned that services like Cloudflare, along with GoDaddy and Google, had dropped The Daily Stormer after an outcry from activists. He thought their actions violated Anglin’s rights to free speech and reached out to The Daily Stormer to offer help. Lim, whose domain bitmitigate.com was registered in March, said he was small compared to giants like Cloudflare, and he also wanted to create publicity for his company. “This whole thing is really entertaining,” he said.

    • Résistance Land Shark Ω

Not sure this was a smart business plan, dude.

He is doing it for free too, so he is paying out of his own pocket hoping other companies will want to pay him after this.

    3/3
Article below was posted on Oct 12, 2016. Difficult to pick a certain paragraph, you should probably read it all to get the points. I am an immigrant, lived in/near big cities all my life, don’t know any “rural” Americans (only from my own former country), and while I think of Trump rural voters exactly like the author suggests, mostly inbred hillbillies with a Jeebus complex, such articles are eye-opening, helping to put some things into perspective.
But most important: what can we, as a society, do to address the schism between rural towns/big cities and prevent future Trumps from taking power?
“How Half Of America Lost Its F**king Mind”
    http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-reasons-trumps-rise-that-no-one-talks-about/

“Hey, remember when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans? Kind of weird that a big hurricane hundreds of miles across managed to snipe one specific city and avoid everything else. To watch the news (or the multiple movies and TV shows about it), you’d barely hear about how the storm utterly steamrolled rural Mississippi, killing 238 people and doing an astounding $125 billion in damage.”
“But who cares about those people, right? What’s newsworthy about a bunch of toothless hillbillies crying over a flattened trailer? New Orleans is culturally important. It matters.

To those ignored, suffering people, Donald Trump is a brick chucked through the window of the elites. “Are you assholes listening now?”

“The cities are always living in the future. I remember when our little town got our first Chinese restaurant and, 20 years later, its first fancy coffee shop. All of this stuff had turned up in movies (set in L.A., of course) decades earlier. I remember watching ’80s movies and mocking the “Valley Girl” stereotypes — young girls from, like, California who would, like, say, “like” in between every third word. Twenty years later, you can hear me doing the same in every Cracked podcast. The cancer started in L.A. and spread to the rest of America.

Well, the perception back then was that those city folks were all turning atheist, abandoning church for their bisexual sex parties. That, we were told, was literally a sign of the Apocalypse. Not just due to the spiritual consequences (which were dire), but the devastation that would come to the culture. I couldn’t imagine any rebuttal. In that place, at that time, the church was everything. Don’t take my word for it — listen to the experts:
Church was where you made friends, met girls, networked for jobs, got social support. The poor could get food and clothes there, couples could get advice on their marriages, addicts could try to get clean. But now we’re seeing a startling decline in Christianity among the general population, the godless disease having spread alongside Valley Girl talk. So according to Fox News, what’s the result of those decadent, atheist, amoral snobs in the cities having turned their noses up at God?
    Chaos.”

    • Atheist

Well, the perception back then was that those city folks were all turning atheist, abandoning church for their bisexual sex parties.

Oh sure, that’s EXACTLY why I became an atheist. lol

      (it’s not)

      • aktlib101

Yep, my thoughts exactly. But when those people go to church and hear their pastor/priest blaming their suffering on Obama, liberals, gays, atheists..who will they believe? Trump came to smash the big city elites and bring back the idillic life of rural Americans, or so he promised. And they believed. How do we change the minds of sufficient numbers of them so no Trump-like dictator ever gets to the WH?

        • Three Finger Salute

Simply put, Lincoln screwed up trying to keep the Union together. He should have let the South go and just sent in the troops to get the slaves out. We need to have a Mason-Dixit and a Midwexit. The arranged marriage is over and has been for years. Irreconcilable differences. Staying together for the kids isn’t feasible anymore. Let them have their Gilead, and we’ll have South Canada.

          • Bullshit. There are plenty of people in the south who do not feel that way. Look at Georgia almost going purple- Look at texas striking down a potty law.
We keep fighting because the fight is good. We keep fighting because giving up and taking the easy way out will only give us unstable states on our border that we will constantly have to guard against.
All of us, or none of us.

          • Atheist

I do not feel comfortable abandoning women to Gilead, or allowing a Gilead to take the “sons of ham” to places unknown for god only knows what.

Okay, maybe I’m up for letting the white supremacists have their own island somewhere (like lashing houseboats together and calling it survivor land)

          • Suttree

Pitcairn is looking for people to move there. They are losing population and the little that they do have is starting to get pretty inbred. Republicans should feel right at home.

          • Suttree

Plus y’all make mean cocktails, are friendly as hell, and I love me some southern cooking. I know I am a Yankee but I have a few decades of southern spirit in me. :)

      • Dazza

Wait. There are bisexual sex parties on Sundays? Why was I not informed?

    • HorseChestnut

They need income and infrastructure. There are towns with no jobs and no health care, and with no trains or buses, losing your car can jeopardize your survival. Improved infrastructure (more roads, broadband expansion, clean water) would lead to more jobs, but in the meantime, we need to reweave the social safety net- welfare is basically a lie at this point. An actual, functioning welfare system would go a hell of a long way.

      • Atheist

Yes, but why do they keep voting Republican? That is the source of their problems. Not city people or immigrants.

        • Suttree

Because they are racist yokels. Trust me. There aren’t many well to do places in Mississippi outside of Natchez, Oxford, and a bit of Jackson.

        • aktlib101

God, guns and abortion. And hatred, presumably

        • AHhhh but the republicans keep telling them it is cities and immigrants and that if they could just get rid of those, they’ll be fine without actually having to change their lives themselves.

          • aktlib101

Repubs have hijacked God and are using religion to lie and control these people, how do we break that dominance? Not all can be changed, but if 10% do, we’ve probably won

          • The simple answer is to offer them a new God. That is how it was done in the old days.
But liberals don’t like mind fucking people so……

          • aktlib101

Fuck. You’d think access to the Internet would school people in understanding better the vastness and diversity of the world, but instead they flock to Fox News and Breitbart and we are all fucked at the moment.

          • Atheist

Yes this. Exactly this. Most everyone has a smartphone and brightfart is what they google.

          • Humans are inherently a fearful species. This is on purpose! We were once prey after all.
It takes time and energy and will to WANT to let go of fears. The biggest, and hardest one to let go, is the fear of the unknown.
The world is changing very fast. People are getting left behind for many reasons (some of these self imposed). They are afraid, so they’ll turn to the first person who tells them it is not their fault, they are the good people, these others are the bad ones.

          • aktlib101

Yes. Absolutely yes. Part of brainwashing. Also, a modern version of “divide et impera”, we were rarely as divided as we are today.

          • The Militant Homosexual Agenda

I think the internet has helped tremendously. Gay rights, for example. But people who are full of hate flock to places that validate their emotions and reinforce what they have chosen to believe.

          • Atheist

I wish I could brainstorm but I recently got done having a horrible conversation with a trump humping Christian who won’t denounce him even though he gave a wink wink nod to Nazis.

I’m frustrated and fresh out of ideas.

          • aktlib101

Well, not all can be changed, some are hopeless. I’ve had similar experiences, I understand very well. We just need to work on the ones who still have some functioning brain cells.

          • RobespierreHoo

I don’t underestimate the power of Baby Jeebus and the handling of serpents. But religion is secondary in the control scheme to (1) racism, Baby Jeebus’ gift to the GOP, and (2) the total destruction of the American public education system that taught critical thinking skills and provided a smidgen of American History and Government. This educational endeavor, while admittedly uneven and class based, was almost universal.
Now, we get to go to Betty DeVos Charter School, sell Amway detergent to our neighbors, or enlist in Erick Prince’s militia and go fight heathen Muslims. The choice is ours.

          • aktlib101

That ^, and all the attacks on science and on people with any kind college education plus the deep conviction that you will be fine in life without polluting your mind with (liberal) college brainwashing. Jobs of the past and jobs of the future differ, education is and will be more and more essential. But how do you make rural voters see it? Or, hopefully, their kids will.

      • Amen and no snarking.
But, how to get them to rebuild when they constantly swallow the lie that raising taxes even a little will kill them all dead?
That it is the takers and moochers making their lives worse?

        • Atheist

But they themselves often fall into the “takers” category, they just give themselves a pass because they are white and “welfare queens” are only supposed to be black, brown, refugees, ect.

        • Suttree

They expect the casinos to draw enough money that everyone is somehow going to get better. they don’t understand that money isn’t getting passed out.

        • HorseChestnut

This is just my hot take, but: I think this comes from shame. Americans are taught to self-police for signs of mooching, and we grow up believing that having needs you can’t meet alone makes you despicable. I’m hoping that people can heal from these ideas, if they have safety, shelter, food, freedom, etc.

          • It is funny. I remember my parents getting the government cheese at least once (was good too! From lancaster, yum). I never remember feeling ashamed of it. I do remember being probably a little more conscious of money and not asking for much, but never ashamed.
I am wondering if it is less “Americans” and more “specific upbringing”

          • Atheist

            I remember government cheese. *shudders*

          • Government cheese was GOOD cheese in my neck of PA anyway. Came from the Lancaster farms, right near by so plenty fresh.
Came in a big wheel and was aged nicely, also.

          • Suttree

Bullshit. Mississippi is on top of the list for reliance on federal aid. They have no problem sucking off of that teet. As they like to say. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/01/06/some-of-the-most-conservative-states-rely-most-on-federal-government-aid/

      • Three Finger Salute

Adjusting the policy isn’t enough. We have to find a way to win hearts and minds. Spencerism (which I call it, because social “Darwinism” is a misnomer that unfairly maligns Darwin, who called his cousin out for pseudoscientific bullshit) is all but hard-wired into the American psyche. The New Deal was an outlier. Really the only time America was “successful” was when the entire rest of the world was flattened by a war that killed 200 million people and we invested in science and technology not for its own sake but to measure our dicks against the communists. Domestically, there’s been 70+ years of demonizing public investment in anything as a stepping stone to Soviet gulags and now Venezuela with no toilet paper.

“Welfare” is a dirty word; half the country thinks Scandinavia doesn’t exist and Canada is a communist dictatorship run by the illegitimate son of Fidel Castro; and believes that “sissy liberal” things like education and healthcare are unnecessary fluff as long as you’ve got your Bibles and guns to shoot your own game and eat squirrel meat for dinner. This half of the country is NEVER. GOING. TO. CHANGE. It’s not only about jobs. They don’t want jobs, or at least not only jobs. They want “their” America back. That means only white guys having jobs while the women stay in the kitchen and the cullerd folk either pick cotton or cease to exist. We either let them have an “equal” say that drowns us out, or we cut them loose and let them fail on their own while we go ahead and have a civilized society. Maybe the solution is something like the Greek city-states. A network of interconnected sister cities with their own thriving “cosmopolitan” cultures, cut off from the rubes and they from us. If they want to come in, fine, but they need to learn to play by the rules. None of the various bigoted -isms and leave your fucking guns at home.

We’ve seen this before in other countries and it never really resolves itself. It’s a perpetually unwinnable battle not just of “economic anxieties” but culture. In Britain, the rural folks voted overwhelmingly for Brexit because Enoch Powell is a saint to them and they didn’t want “rivers of blood” (and “impure” blood at that) “polluting” their idyllic English countryside. In Canada, Harper’s first words upon declaring victory were “The West is in!” implying an end to control by the hated “Eastern Liberals” who were (and still are) viewed as godless cosmopolitans letting in all kinds of strange foreign influences and spending like sailors on social programs for undesirables. He also knew (or thought) that there was money to be made by latching onto the Bush oil wars despite them being widely unpopular in Canada. Canadian involvement in Iraq was itself viewed as one big fuck-you to the relatively pacifist liberal and leftist parties who saw getting into an imperialist conflict in a country that had not attacked them as being un-Canadian. “We’re going to be more like America and YOU WILL LIKE IT.” It was even a fuck-you going back some 50 years to when Pearson and Trudeau Sr.’s Liberals famously opposed Vietnam.

Obama even said it: people who’ve lived a certain way of life for a long time are resistant to change, so they cling to their guns and Bibles and call it an act of war. Just the fact that a cullerd boy was “telling ‘them’ what to do” was downright blasphemy. Bush could have raped a baby on live television and they’d love him for it because at least he was a good ol’ boy and our boys were fighting bravely to kill those damn worthless Muslims. Obama was viewed as a traitor not only because of his race but because he knew those wars were “stupid” and felt a moral obligation to help out the desperate people who America’s wars had displaced. Those rural folks didn’t want the “enemy” they’d been told to hate for 8 years moving in next door to them. But they didn’t want Ahmed and they certainly didn’t want Heather with her two mommies either.

Look at how quickly the rural devout folk transformed Turkey from Ataturk’s secular government to an Islamist theocracy under the “populist” Erdogan. Another totalitarian madman who marshaled an army of sycophants against the immoral “city dwellers” who weren’t covering their women, praying 5x a day or making hajj every single year. Same with Iran, the former Eastern bloc countries which are only nominally part of the E.U. but ideologically aligned with Putin, heck, even Berlin in the ’30s where the volk felt like they had been used as cannon fodder during the war, then discarded, and were disgusted by the “degenerate art” and other supposed “debaucheries” of the Weimar Republic.

“Welfare” isn’t a solution to anything. “Welfare” is a sin in American society, along with so many other things, and shifting the budget around isn’t going to change the culture. That’s going to take a lot of hard work; it won’t happen overnight, but I don’t know if it’s even possible anymore. We need to split up. We need a divorce.

        • aktlib101

^ Excellent ^. Very well articulated. Thank you. And yes, Poland and Hungary have lost their collective minds, while turning neo-fascist. Turkey too. However, young people, living in big cities are mostly like us, liberals. Yet, fear and religion and propaganda has turned the minds of particularly those from the older generations, who view nationalism as a virtue and vote for it despite hurting their own lives. I come from E. Europe and yes, there are older people who now view the old communist order with nostalgia, and seem to have forgotten all suffering, and atrocities and propaganda and organized theft of thelr nation’s wealth (see Putin and his ilk, or any other putridly rich dictator in history)

    • Suttree

Um, I used to live in New Orleans, and while I wasn’t there for Katrina, I knew damn well that Mississippi took a whoopin’. This is the bridge that connects New Orleans East to Mississippi. I moved back down there 4 years later and they were still working on replacing it. It wasn’t a secret.

    • So,,….We got Trump because the news media did not cover enough of the devastation of one hurricane (even though they did! All the channels made sure to run stories on the other places hit! New Orleans was not about culture, it was about getting the white folk out and leaving the blacks to try their luck in the dome), even though they all got their FEMA money?

      Selfish fucking prigs.

      • aktlib101

Agree, completely. But I think New Orleans was not really discussed as THE “reason” for Trump, was just an example of the many the author pointed out in his article, to reveal the “alternate” personality of the rural voter.

    • george lastrapes

Think of a generic red state that went 75% for Trump. That means 25% didn’t, they voted for Hillary (or, at least, not Trump). Too many bluestaters will ignore that state, except to denigrate it. That one voter in four can feel insulted and abandoned
I’m a southerner, now living on the west coast. Many things about the south I recall fondly, others not at all fondly. But galls me no end to hear people who have never been there tell me just how unmigatedly terrible, how utterly irredeemable the south is. It’s like a slap in the face.
Need I add, it’s how Democrats lose elections.

      • aktlib101

I think that was exactly the point of the author, who himself is a big city, blue voter, with deep ties to the South and Trump voters.

        • george lastrapes

I found it difficult to decode. Perhaps quotation marks misled me. But his/her heart is where it should be.

      • The Militant Homosexual Agenda

I get fed up with the attacks on Texas. Let’s not forget it’s the home state of both Molly Ivins, and Ann Richards as well as the POTUS who enacted Medicare, Medicaid and signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I live in IL which has gone blue for POTUS as long as I can remember but I am surrounded by Repubs where I live. This red state v blue state shit really has to stop. Arkansas gets blamed for Huckabee but the Clintons are from there, too. The Landrieu clan of LA comes to mind. Mohammed Kasim Reed is the current Mayor of Atlanta, for crying out loud.

        • aktlib101

Yes, there is an “apparent” red state, blue state schism. The labeling does not help much in soothing differences. In fact, the real difference is likely that blue states have larger urban areas with higher proportion of people living in big cities, while red states have more rural areas. Otherwise, last election showed how cities everywhere voted blue and rural areas voted red.
