Not that they were trying to compensate for anything

The people of Tampa, Florida, know what to do when local politicians aren’t willing to step up and do the right thing. The Hillsborough County Commission wasn’t quite ready to remove a tacky Confederate memorial in front of the old county courthouse, erected in 1911. So the commissioners wimped out by saying, in effect, if you people want it removed, you go and raise the money. If opponents of the statue couldn’t put up half the cost of removing the statue, $140,000, in 30 days, the memorial would stay right where it was.

Please don’t be too shocked to learn the fundraiser blew past the goal in one day. Bye, ugly Confederate phallus obelisk! Bye!

They reached their goal so fast thanks to several Tampa sportsball teams, boosted by a social media push from the city’s former mayor, Bob Buckhorn, and former Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy:

Correction: Bob Buckhorn is Tampa’s current mayor. Yr Wonkette regrets the error!

And then everybody wanted in on taking the damned thing down, with big-dollar donations coming from business and sports people, and also donations of $5 to $500 from commoners, too.

As the effort snowballed, the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce announced a $70,000 donation from its members, which included contributions from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The sportsball teams issued a joint statement saying they wanted to tackle that monument, knock it out of the park, and do something appropriately metaphorical for whatever sport the Lightning plays. We guess they’d put it on ice:

The commissioners had previously agreed that if citizens came up with half the funds needed, the monument would be moved to a family cemetery in Brandon, Florida, but first they had to throw up that dumb fundraising roadblock. Tom Scarritt, the Tampa attorney who led the effort to raise the funds, said the people of Tampa

“fixed the problem because it didn’t appear that the county could.” Choked up, he added: “I couldn’t be more proud of my fellow citizens.”

The Chamber of Commerce also issued a statement calling out the commissioners for being cowards and deciding to “pass their responsibility to the business community.”

“The monument and what it represents is inconsistent with what is best for our region,” the statement said. “We look forward to working with our County Commissioners in the future to make more enlightened decisions.”

Yes, that’s the Chamber of Commerce calling the county commission “unenlightened.”

Mayor Buckhorn piled on, calling the commission’s decision to pass the buck to the Buccs “a blatant attempt to not do the morally correct thing” and a decision that would have hurt the city’s image with employers and tourists. He also warned commissioners not to try to get in the way of removing the memorial:

“I would dare them,” he said. “I think this community has said, ‘Enough is enough. We’re ready to turn this page.'”

Oh dear. Please don’t dare the bastards to do something awful. You’ve seen how that works with certain political jerkwads.

Commissioner Victor Crist, who had the bright idea in the first place, declared victory for his fiscal smarts. The original plan was for the county to pay for the move, with some volunteer help, but when a GoFundMe campaign only raised $7,000, Crist decided to up the ante and introduce the measure requiring private donations to cover half the costs. The commission voted 4-2 to make opponents of the monument jump through that additional hoop. In a statement, Crist congratulated himself for winning so bigly:

“Now the liberals should be happy it’s moving, the conservatives should be happy that the taxpayers are not paying for it, and the Confederate enthusiasts, while they will still be angry because it’s moving, should at least be grateful that it’s going to be moved safely and erected properly at a site where they could still go and enjoy it,” Crist wrote.

The local head of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, David McCallister, was resigned to the results of the fundraiser, but managed some butthurt at the result, saying he was disappointed but not surprised, and was at least glad opponents of the monument met the minimum number of cliches:

The point is, the people who did want to remove the statue needed to have some skin in the game. They needed to put their money where their mouth is.

Thank goodness they ponied up, put their shoulders to the wheel, gave it the old college try, and won the day. Still, McCallister had one more bit of non sequitur wisdom. He just couldn’t see the sense of sports teams contributing to taking down a Confederate stone dick, asking, “How many Antifa members buy tickets to football games?”

Now there’s a man who understands why these things matter to people.

The monument should be buried in a confederate cemetery.

The perfect location would be a hole, about 60ft deep, and 6ft square so just the very tip of it is above ground level, but you could pee down the entire length of the thing. It’d be the world’s most popular open-air urinal.

I’m hoping this is scaring the white supremacists- the sheer numbers of people opposing them at every turn. They took comfort in believing they had moral imperative based on their inflated size, but I bet they never imagined so many people would come out of the woodwork from all walks of life to roundly oppose their bullshit.

    • blarg

Are you kidding? This is giving them all boners. Firstly, because we’re paying attention to them. Secondly, because it feeds into their victimhood trope.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

I think that was true at first, but as the consequences started rolling in and it became apparent that the majority of the country opposes them, I think it gave them pause. Granted, never underestimate the impenetrability of the conservative bubble…

  • Red Bird

This is funny because the council’s stupid plan backfired. If the fact that they were able to raise that much money so quickly isn’t proof that no one wanted the monument, nothing is. Next step, make sure they actually do move it.

I’m opposed to the removal of the Lenin statue really only for one reason. I don’t feel strongly about it staying up for its own sake, but I really want to #resist reframing the removal of Confederate statues as being primarily about whether or not we approve of the person so honored, thus turning it into a “both sides do it” thing. While disapproval is a motivating factor, the point is that A) the Confederate statues honor traitors and seditionists, and B) the Confederate statues were put up to terrorize Black people.

        • gratuitous

Isn’t the Lenin statue on private property?

          • Gayer Than Thou

I feel like there’s some kind of irony there, but in any event, I feel like statues on private property can generally be left where they are.

Not to mention how turmp handled it.

      • SnarkON

God, that makes me so sad all of a sudden. I think you’re right. It was the shitty Daily Stormer post about Heather Heyer. Which means Heather really did die in the service of her country, and now she’ll never know what she did. That is just tragic.

Turns out it’s a photo from Athens, Greece.
“The image, which shows a man in an “Antifascist Action” jacket beating a fallen police officer, was shared widely after a white supremacist rally in Virginia turned violent. People shared the photo as evidence that “many sides” were to blame for the violence, as President Donald Trump had suggested.”

The photo, however, is not from last weekend’s rally, but from a demonstration in Athens, Greece in 2009. In the original photo – which is available on Getty Images – there is no anti-fascist logo on the man’s jacket.

        • WomanInThePersistence

I prefer to wait until the total is given, look in my purse in order to get the correct change, realize that I am a quarter short, then start looking for my checkbook. And then as I am writing, I start quizzing the cashier, “Are you sure that the cherry tomatoes are 3.99? I’m sure the sign said 3.49.” It’s so wierd how people are so hostile in grocery stores.

          • BloviateMe

            LOL, that’s so accurate.

          • WomanInThePersistence

I work in a grocery store. It’s truly astonishing, the level of cluelessness one sees.

          • Sakonyachen

When I had first started my own business(quit my 9to5 to make rap beats), after 3 months I had my first lull in business, so I grabbed all the change from buying things in cash for two years straight. I cashed it in with one of those change counters and went shopping. I bought too much and had to return something. The lady that was checking my groceries was new so she had to get a manager to help. Some fuckface two people back starts bitching about how his food is going to spoil and has the manager take it back. Was he going to eat it in the parking lot? The month was August in the St. Louis area. 90+ temps with insane humidity. Sitting on a belt in an air conditioned building is the last thing that will spoil your food. He was such a prick that I considered waiting at the end of the checkout and smashing his jaw. I couldn’t afford groceries, so I certainly couldn’t afford Assault and Battery charges. It’s astonishing how mad people are about spending a tiny portion of their paycheck on more food than they will eat.

          • WomanInThePersistence

A happy checkout story. This really happened. Years ago, I was a cashier. At about 8:30am I had a fairly long line consisting of a very elderly lady and a bunch of commuters holding their coffees and glaring at her. When she finally found her checkbook, and yes it took forever, I said “Great! I’ll do the Charleston!” and I broke out into a dopey little dance ( I was trying desperately to lighten the mood). The lady shot me a look, and gently said, “That’s not the Charleston.”

And then she started dancing the real Charleston. And she taught everybody in line how to do it. And every single person in that line danced it. And relaxed. And smiled. We all danced the fucking Charleston.

The guy who was last in line told me it was the best time he’d ever had in a grocery store. True story.

It is the worst place I have ever visited, a steamy fetid swamp filled with alligators and rednecks, punctuated by shitty strip malls and Walmarts, and so car-attached that you literally have to drive across the multilane boulevards to go a block to get a carton of milk, and wait in stoplights that take 20 minutes to change…it is a shithole. Worst of all, the wingnuts who live there want the entire country to look like that.

    • Beanz&Berryz

      Walkable places are better.

    • therblig

i had to stop over there once on a flight from orlando to newark. it was just before thanksgiving and although i was there long enough to change planes (about 17 minutes), i remember it as the most humid place i had ever been.

      • yyyaz

I lived on the Atlantic side of Florida, where Tampa/St. Pete was referred to as “the armpit.”

        • therblig

        • SnarkON

Except the NFL. Those owners are all white supremacists.

          • Claire

That’s just a ruse. It’s still Soros in a white supremacist costume, like on Scooby Doo.

  • Ezio
  • Saxo the Grammarian

Here’s something I just learned – many of the Confederate memorials and statues are mass-produced. Salesmen would travel from town to town back in the day, peddling these oversized lumps of kitsch to communities who wanted to extend a big middle finger to their African-American residents.

Also too, for the McCallister turd ornament: no football for me until Colin Kaepernick has a contract.

    • SeeTrain65

And no football for me until the Cleveland Browns have a winning season.

Hutto being near Austin, the thief strolled into my friend’s music store, with a story about him and his dad both sitting around, you know, blowing these $3500 tubas for fun together. • II Gosala

In England, my people were an oppressed religious minority, terrorized, fined, imprisoned, and even tortured and killed by the Crown.

They found refuge in this continent and became what they had fled. They created a theocratic state that denied citizenship to anyone not a member of their sect. They only dabbled in slave owning, but they profited from the slave system bigly. And, in the main, they agreed that Africans were “natural” slaves. They deprived numerous native tribes of their land and taught them that their religions were literally Satanic deceptions. They tried to Europeanize them, denigrated their customs, dress and languages.

That is my heritage: ambiguous as hell and something I ponder almost every day.

Destroy any and all monuments and statues to Confederate traitors. Rename every street, park, school or post office that “honors” sick, sickening enemies of this country. Confederates are enemies of this country, try each of them for treason, and execute those found guilty, just like the Constitution says.

    • Jamoche

Rename them after people like Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and MLKjr. And while you’re at it, stop renaming the shortest road in town MLKjr – we can see what you’re doing, we aren’t fooled.

His whole bit was that because California has very wide laws as to what qualifies as a weapon (everything that you use primarily as a weapon regardless of what it was meant to be used for, is basically a weapon) he noticed you could still carry flags on poles into most rallies. Of course stating publicly beforehand that the reason you are bringing a flag on a stick is so you can then use the stick as a weapon negates that whole defence anyway.

We were Union. And also horribly racist. Black people were actually banned from moving here in our State Constitution.

        • theCryptofishist

We still are racist. Many of us, at any rate. Orange County and most of the rural counties are rather red. Look up Pete Wilson and George Dukmejin (sp), our governors in the 80s for a taste of what it was like not so long ago.

          • WomanInThePersistence

Oregon definately is still racist. But we don’t have an Orange County.

          • Lots of former confederates moved to Oregon. And Arizona. And Idaho.

The SPLC’d best go back to work on this one. The “publicly sponsored” Confederate symbol it shows in Idaho is, when you zoom in, the privately-owned Forest Saloon, so named because it is in the forest near Soldiers Meadow Reservoir (named for US soldiers killed in the vicinity during the Nez Perce War.)

If you hover over it, it says it is the Robert E. Lee Campground in Boise (a mere 180 miles south.) That’s not accurate either. The campground in question is in the Boise National Forest, and Google says it is permanently closed.

    • How the hell are there publically sponsored confederate monuments in PA that is not Gettysburgh????? WHAT EVEN? New Jersey? Mass????

So what IS that statue? Where is it? It’s hilarious, but there’s no way I’m googling “naked man fighting off babies”.

  • mardam422

Won’t someone think of the Nazis?????

    • II Gosala

We think a lot of Nazis.

We think, if there is a God, they will burn in hell.

We think, if there is justice, they will be sued, prosecuted and challenged by every legal means.

We think, if there is reason, they will be laughed at, mocked and ridiculed mercilessly.

We think, if there is love, they will be pitied, called out and shamed.

We think, if there is humanity and any Nazi decides to abandon his [sic] evil ways, there will be penance, restitution, reconciliation and, finally, rejoicing.

We think a lot of Nazis.

  • Raan

So, question unrelated to the confederacy or white supremacy (I hope): Does anyone else like tomato in all forms except for actual tomato?

    • Canned Covfefe

I’ve known many folks with same interesting taste buds.

    • theCryptofishist

Just checking that you have tasted actual real tomatoes–from a garden or farmer’s market.

    • Courser_Resistance

Me. I don’t like raw tomatoes either. As long as there’s none of the slimy tomato guts, a little chopped tomato on my burritos & tacos is ok.

    • redarmyzombie

      Salsa, marinara, curry base…mm-hmm, goodness!

Just plain tomato, please kill me…

      • I feel that way about most tomatoes….
But on a hot day, fresh cherries, slightly over ripe, sprinkled with a bit of salt and chilled, is a delight

        • redarmyzombie

It is something in my unfortunate list of “Things I wish I liked”…

    • HazooToo

Do Nazi’s prefer ketchup, or catsup?

      • Raan

        C. Montgomery Burns has been grappling with that question for decades.

    • eyelashviper

There is nothing better than a luscious ripe tomato, just off the vine, warm from the sun, with a tad of salt..
It’s hard to find tomatoes at any stores that taste so good.

      • Poorly Behaved Pérsistanista

You got to grow them, or get them from an especially good local farmer. Some CSA tomatoes are also crap. My tomatoes have been coming in for the past month and it’s heaven on earth. I’ve got about 2 dozen barely processed quarts in the freezer to be added last second to soups and stews all winter, gonna be summa-time in January, baby.

    • (((fka_donnie_d)))

I find it absurdly easy to grow my own but I am in Jersey

  • Serai 1

My take on what should be done with all these statue/monument things:

1/3 should be melted down / crushed and used to make other public art pieces.
1/3 should be moved to museums and other indoor spaces, to be exhibited as examples of the poisonous legacy of slavery.
1/3 should be given to the African-American community to do with as they please – destroy, repurpose, dunk in the sea, whatever.

    • amrak63

Perhaps the AAs would like to melt down their 1/3 and recast them as toilets?

      • Serai 1

        Up to them completely.

      • Courser_Resistance

If they choose that, the rest of us (meaning whites) should pay for that. And full installation and maintenance, too.

        • II Gosala

I think 40 acres and a mule (adjusted for inflation) would be more appropriate.

          But that’s just me.

    • theCryptofishist

Okay, but we can have some of them melted down and made in to “Freedom Medals” to commemorate the removal of these nazi/confed statues. (Yes, not literal nazis, but if those twits aren’t going to differentiate, the we don’t have to within this context.)

If you’re going to go with a loser, go big or go home.

      Go Cubs! Go!

      • George Burgess

Oh come on! I’m life long Cubs fan. That only took 108 years. And they were the lovable losers, a phrase that cannot be said about those protesting the removal of a statue of Lee. (Supposedly that was their reason.)

        • theCryptofishist

You’ve got to admit that it’s half right.

        • II Gosala

Maybe it’s because I didn’t grow up in Chicago (I only lived there 20 years), but I didn’t exactly love the way they’d throw the game away in the late innings.

But let’s not fight. They did break the curse.

          • George Burgess

Just hard to admit you were right for so long.

          • II Gosala

I really wonder who these assholes think they’re impressing by being such unmitigated unwashed assholes every step of the way. They’re being dicks just for the sake of being dicks.

I can be an unmitigated screaming bitch on occasion, but you never see me doubling down. I either start apologizing to everyone who had to witness it, or slink off into a dark corner in shame.

Being a shithead just to prove what a huge shithead you can be, just…. makes no sense to me.

    • Walter Wellstone

That’s the point. They want to “stick it to the liberals” first and foremost. It’s really childish but considering they live such shitty lives there’s not much else in this world to make them feel good about themselves.

    • HarpyLibtart

See, that’s where you go wrong – these assholes come from the “what do you mean my coupon’s expired? WHERE IS YOUR MANAGER” school of philosophy, which stipulates that it does not matter if you are morally, factually or congenitally wrong, as long as you never, ever admit it.
If someone calls you on your wrongness, you kick, scream, throw faeces and invoke Jesus whilst sabotaging whatever they’re trying to do until they either give up or work around you, at which point you triumphantly declare victory by default.
Being a successful white Republican male means never having to say you’re sorry.

    • Walter Wellstone

If that’s the definition for those who oppose conservatives and their racist agenda, sure, I fucking am.

    • Perkniticky

Do you think they even know what anti-fa means? Maybe they think it means anti-family or something. Otherwise I just don’t get it. Because if you think being anti-fascist is a bad thing… well, you’re kind of anti-American.

  • BuzzKill48

If I understand the article correctly, the plan is to move it to another location in the city, which accomplishes nothing.

    • Going to a private cemetery. People can haz whatever they want on their land. Should not be in a public space, on public lands, being maintained with public funds, which is the point of movin’ em.

      • gffish

It would be a shame if the statue accidentally fell off the moving trucks and shattered like the Confederate economy during Reconstruction.

    • doktorzoom

Gets it off a far more prominent public location (with the taint of official recognition that involves) and into a private cemetery in a bedroom community where there are presumably some Confederate dead to “honor.”

      • Not enough alligators in that post, Gosala.

        • II Gosala

          Fuck the god damned alligators.

The glory of Florida wildlife is the birds. Herons, flamingos, secretary birds, ibis, coots, ducks, geese, hawks, bald eagles, osprey, pelicans, gulls, sand pipers, albatross, doves, woodpeckers, humming birds and any number of others I can’t identify.

Florida is a riot of life and all anyone can think of is stupid alligators.

Manatees, cougars, black bears, dolphins, sunfish, sailfish, coral reefs and their profusion of life forms,…

          And you want alligators.

If I didn’t know you, I just say “fuck off ” — alligators are just another stereotype.

    http://pureblather.com/2017/08/17/on-confederate-memorials/

With regards to this thing in Tampa, from the looks of it, it’s a memorial to the Confederate dead. How about changing the inscription and rededicating it to all those from Florida (no matter their side) who died in the Civil War?

    • Poorly Behaved Pérsistanista

You mean, honor the traitors? I know you’re trying to be nice, but they were traitors.

    • Boscoe

      Many sides… many sides…

    • thixotropic jerk

I read your post and I think that, while you mean well, you are missing the entire historical context of how 99.9% of these “monuments” came to be. They were erected in the Reconstruction and Post-Reconstruction era and were meant as messages to POC that as far as the racists in the south were concerned it didn’t matter if the slavery-loving assholes lost the Civil War or not, Whitey McJethro was still in control around here and don’t you forget it! Your attempt at being fair indulges the ignorant to keep pretending that we are destroying some kind of important “history lesson” when instead by removing these monuments we are telling the ongoing white supremacists that their ideas are bad and they are bad people for promoting their bad ideas. Does that help?

    • ContextIsKey

Superficially it’s a monument to the confederate war dead. How about we recognize the statue for what it really is, a monument to white supremacy? Since you seem to be interested in the history of the statue, here’s a link to one by a real historian. https://www.vox.com/the-big-idea/2017/8/18/16165160/confederate-monuments-history-charlottesville-white-supremacy

  • Aileen

In general, this is all very nice. However, I’m pretty sure an angry mob could have taken care of that statue for much less. It would be great if the city commissioners gave the “Confederate enthusiasts” a choice: pay to move the statue to the private property of your choosing, or let this here angry mob do what angry mobs do best.

            ;o)

But there’s always this: Kopelski Twins Confederate Statue Modification Service

          • Sorry, it was not meant as an attack, just a helpful hint. Also see my comment above for another way to repurpose confederate monuments. (Which by the way, I had to edit because of a grammar mistake. We all make them)

          • Cogswell – In a Mirror, Darkly

No, problem I didn’t take it as an attack. It’s all in good fun until someone loses an eye.

In my original post I made a comment without thoroughly reading the article (just skimmed it, oops,) so I kinda stepped on my *ahem*.

I’m hoping I redeemed myself with the Colbert clip.

  • I think we should begin moving all these confederate statues to the lobby of Trump Towers around the world (since Trump loves them so) and arrange (trigger warning) them around the one below.
We could then replace those hate statues with statues of people who are scientists, teachers, inventors, civil and equal rights workers, etc. In other words people who make society better, not worse.

JESUS Once again we learn elections have consequences. This is how they do it caz they know people don’t pay attention: get fascist jerkwads on school boards, city councils, county commissions and proceed to fuck things up from the grassroots upward. Good for the heroes of Tampa.

Many ball players remember where they came from, be it the inner city or the rural wasteland. Places with no jobs, no future, and no way out.

Sport is still important and indeed a unifying thing.
Sometime the ONLY common thing in community.

  • blaid droog

In downtown jaxville we have our own confederate phallus. It’s 60 ft tall with a soldier on top. It’s in a park named for the man that had it erected in 1898. In 1899 the park was named for this man to honor his erection. In 1901 we had the honor of having the 3rd largest urban fire in u.s. history. Downtown was destroyed but the statue was unscathed. This past Monday the prez of the city council said she wants it gone. The mayor wants it to stay. I smell a firefight a brewin’.

Actually, you’re probably right. If the south had won, all progress would have stopped, people would have fled to the north to avoid starving to death. Some would have stayed and eventually died out. With no one left, the south would have been quite peaceful.

  • Zyxomma

Good. I don’t watch any sportsball, and I’m glad the rich athletes are doing something good with their money for a change. (And yes, I know some among them are quite charitable; I’ve just seen too many photos of them getting bottle service in strip clubs.)

  • Confederates were traitors to their country, fighting against their country for the cause of a political, economic, social and cultural system based on human slavery. Confederate statues and monuments should never be placed in a government setting on a pedestal that promotes an aura of honor, glorification, admiration or idolization.

However, the Confederacy and the Civil War are part of our history. Confederate statues and monuments should be kept in museums where the historical context of the items can explained in a sentiment of solemnity, reflection, contrition and conscience.
