Talking about confederate statues makes her grinny, we guess.

Guys, we’ve been shitting on Fox News all week. (And it feels GREAT, thanks for asking!) As sane and good and loving people on BOTH sides of the aisle have spent the week reaching around to each other in love, horrified by what happened in Charlottesville this past weekend, Fox News has obviously been taking its talking points directly from the White Supremacist-In-Chief, who is more concerned about how the Nazis in Charlottesville, many of them just TREMENDOUS people, had a permit for their protest. Also, won’t somebody think of the poor put-upon lovers of confederate statues, even if they happen to be Nazis? WON’T SOMEBODY THINK OF THEIR FEELINGS?

We had “Fox & Friends” taking pity on poor Donald Trump, who has been having a car repeatedly and figuratively slammed into him by the Fake News Media, which just can’t stop criticizing him for his poor responses to the tragedy. We had Jesse Watters waxing poetic about how un-racist America is, then immediately scaring his fans by showing them pictures of Maxine Waters and Susan Rice dressed like SCARY GARGOYLES normal. We had Tucker Carlson bellyaching about how the REAL RACISTS are those mean lefties who LITERALLY BUT NOT LITERALLY lynch those poor Nazis every time they racistly oppose the Nazis’ racism. Fox News has been in rare form this week, even for Fox News.

And lord, we haven’t even had a chance to see what bigoted meat farts have been coming out of Sean Hannity’s mouth!

But right now, it is “Fox & Friends” person Abby Huntsman’s turn. Watch as she speaks to two black guests, Wendy Osefo and Gianno Caldwell. As the Daily Beast notes, Huntsman thinks Caldwell, a Republican, will help a buddy out and argue from the racist right-wing side of things and talk about how UNFAIR it is that mean liberals want to take away the (wholly made-up) heritage of Confederate Fuckwaffle-Americans, by tearing down their loser heroes’ statues. Instead, both Osefo and Caldwell spend the segment tearing up, appalled and hurt by the actions of these LITERAL FUCKING NAZIS and Donald Trump’s cozy response to them, while Huntsman sits in the middle smirking and begging them to talk about statues. Through their tears, you can almost hear her guests say, “Stop trying to make statues happen, ABBY! Statues are never ever going to fucking happen, ABBY.”

Check it out:

WENDY OSEFO: It’s beyond a monument. This is about hatred. This is about white supremacy. And to have Heather Heyer killed on U.S. soil by Nazis, Deandre Harris beaten and bludgeoned by Nazis. This is not talking points here, this is not partisanship, this is human life. And as a mother to hear the president of these United States not sit here and condemn what has happened, as a black woman of two black boys, my heart bleeds. This is not talking points here. This is personal. We as a nation, as a country, have to do better.

ABBY HUNTSMAN: Gianno, do you agree with that? Do you think, I mean, there are good people on BOTH SIDES of this debate, we talk about keeping these statues up, people I talk to say, “this is about history.” How do we move forward, how do we learn from those mistakes if we just tear everything down?

GIANNO CALDWELL, NOT HAVING IT: I come today with a very heavy heart. Last night, I couldn’t sleep at all, because President Trump, our president, has literally betrayed the conscience of our country. The very moral fabric in which we’ve made progress when it comes to race relations in America. He’s failed us …

[At this point Abby Huntsman makes what can only be described as “a noise” offscreen.]

… and it’s very unfortunate that our president would say things like he did in that press conference … when he says, “well there’s good people on the side of the Nazis. They’re not all Nazis. They’re not all white supremacists.” Mr. President! Good people don’t pal around with Nazis and white supremacists. Maybe they don’t consider themselves white supremacists and Nazis, but certainly they hold those views. This has become very troubling, and for anyone to come on any network and defend what President did and said at that press conference yesterday, is completely lost and [has] the potential to be morally bankrupt.

[At this point Abby Huntsman says, “NO!” from offscreen, presumably because she is lost and morally bankrupt.]

Let us cut in here, because to be clear, both guests were choked up or crying at this point. And that was the moment Huntsman took back over and said it’s awesome how these people are coming on TV and keepin’ it real with her, and she assured them it’s OK to be emotional, but CAN YOU STOP YOUR CRYING SO WE CAN HAVE STATUE-CHAT?

Here’s the splitscreen right at that moment:

If you need to walk outside on your front porch and yell mean words about Abby Huntsman at a flock of birds or something, go take a minute, OK?

You know, it’s one thing when Tucker Carlson, who is such a pussy racist he probably decides he “doesn’t have to pee anymore” any time a black dude enters a public restroom he’s in, sits there and spews racism all by himself at a TV camera. But it’s another thing for Abby Huntsman just to sit there and refuse to listen to the real actual people on her show, who are LITERALLY CRYING, and yet insist on sticking to the Trump-approved talking points her bosses told her to say.

CHRIST, what an asshole.

Over twenty-five years ago, a well-known film critic who was then a mere co-worker of mine actually argued that the Irish immigrants, his forebearers, had it rougher than the enslaved. He then went onto The Village Voice and became a faux liberal.

And the fact that the Irish used to not be white and face pretty awful discrimination themselves means that today’s Irish-Americans should remain on the side of those who face continued oppression, I have no patience at all for those who are themselves racist today.

They don’t use it for that, though. They use it as a bludgeon to beat people of color over the head with. What they don’t understand is that Irish, Italians, Polish etc were all pale so they could assimilate in ways Black people or Asians could not.

When was the last time you ever heard an Irishman say “hey, my people were treated bad once, maybe I should stand on the side of the marginalized”. But instead you get guys like Hannity, O’Reilly, Giuliani, Scaramucci, etc.

Texas School Official Removed Over Book’s White Supremacist Symbol
    http://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/2017/08/15/230696/texas-school-official-removed-over-books-white-supremacist-symbol/

A Texas school district has removed an assistant principal from his post after he authored a children’s book whose central character is also a white nationalist symbol.
The Denton school district, north of Dallas-Fort Worth, said in a statement Monday that the publicity generated by Eric Hauser’s work hasbecome a “distraction.” He’s being reassigned to an undetermined post.
This summer Hauser self-published “The Adventures of Pepe and Pede,” about a frog and centipede seeking “truth and honesty” against “deceitful forces.”

    Thanks, GOP!

    • Walter Wellstone

      This.

    • Ms.MLG on Maui

This is so true. I have Scottish ancestry, as do many people where I’m from. Every year, there is a big festival called The Highland Games on top of the highest mountain in the area. It’s devoted to celebrating Scottish culture-food, art, music, dancing, and the throwing of big-ass objects. You don’t have to be Scottish to come, you just have to buy a ticket, and then you can enjoy learning about that culture. It’s inclusive. Very cosmopolitan and such.

      • GunToting[Redacted]

I’m the director of athletics at our local games. There has actually been a somewhat entertaining discussion about whether wearing the kilt and listening to bagpipe music can be considered “cultural appropriation.” Hell, my great-grandfather was rounded up off the streets of Edinburgh and shipped to Canada as part of the “orphan/street urchin roundups” popularized by old Doctor Barnardo. I come by my appreciation of whisky and music that sounds like it was made by someone sawing through a rusty screen door with a wet cat honestly.

      • Scottish food? Haggis, or deep fried Mars bars? Whiskey doesn’t count as food. ;)

        • Ms.MLG on Maui

Yes, food, but I never had a deep fried Mars bar, unfortunately!

    • TakingAmes

Indeed. I can trace my ancestry IN THIS COUNTRY back to 1521. All these newly-arrived racist assholes can get the fuck out of MY country.

      • jodyleek

I am the researcher of my family’s genealogy and I have traced back to the Mayflower for the Fuller branch and back to Jamestown for the Warford matrilineal line, but 1521? Holy cow, where did they settle?

        • TakingAmes

There’s an English ship’s captain on my mother’s side that landed then, and we moved west pretty early. Tennessee by the 1700s, Missouri by the 1800s, and New Mexico by the turn of the 20th century. I believe we were Quakers in New England prior to moving west.

          • SadDemInTex

Again I think you mean 1621.

      • Msgr_MΩment

      • Msgr_MΩment

I am supposedly descended from Princess Mary Kittamaquund, of the Piscataway tribe, so you guys can ALL get off my fucking lawn!

        • SadDemInTex

Has your DNA revealed that you actually have indigenous people backround? Because (I’m being such an asshole today) it became much more acceptable to claim indigenous heritage than the African heritage which was more likely. 90% of ALL indigenous peoples in the entire New World were wiped out by 1690. By the late 1800’s it was believed that the entirety of them and all there culture would be extinct. Most people discover (after doing their DNA) that all that ancestry is actually from Africa. People always want to be from royal blood….just as likely royalty from Africa.

        • No offence, but “my great-great-*x-grandma was an indigenous princess” is such a cliché in all post-colonial countries.

      • SadDemInTex

Unless you trace it to the Spaniards, the earliest English settlement is Jamestown in 1606. The earliest Quakers came in 1655. My ancestors also came in the late 1600s.

        • TakingAmes

I am speaking from having done this family tree research about 18 years ago, but the ship’s captain did land here in 1521. I am not sure, off the top of my head, where he settled at that point, but I do know we were in New England at some point, followed by Tennessee, Missouri, and New Mexico. I don’t believe the captain landed and went back.

          • SadDemInTex

I’m a bit confused. Because there were only Spanish settlements in the 1500 and nothing I look up corresponds with an English settlement prior to Jamestown which was the 1600s. Again, if your ancestor was Spanish, for sure…unless you are speaking of the Caribbean…there may have been English settlements there earlier than 1600.

    • Mr. Blobfish

My wife can trace her heritage to either Ghana or Nigeria. Her family thinks it’s Ghana cuz the Nigerians are the crazy violent people. White pride, my aunt fanny.

    • Atheist

The whole problem with the idea of a “white culture” and racial purity is that NEITHER OF THOSE ACTUALLY EXIST.

All Europeans are descended from four ancient tribes: dark skinned indigenous western European hunter gatherers, Eurasian/Eastern European steppe horse herders, Mediterranean/Near East farmers, and Caucasus hunter gatherers.

You know for a fact that white supremacists wouldn’t consider any of these tribes “white.” They buy into the supremacist mythology that Europeans are all somehow a single group of people. They never were and its beyond just recent ancestry of particular ethnic groups like the Irish or German. ALL people of European ancestry have a mix of these ancient tribes to varying degrees and it is proven scientifically.

***There never was, and never will be, a genetically definable “white race.” ***

      • SadDemInTex

THERE IS NO RACE IN HUMAN BIOLOGY. DNA shows WHERE you come from….there are little switches in the DNA which determine eye/hair/skin color which are called alleles. You can have no (I repeat NO) DNA which comes from Africa (simply because over time the markers disappear with the mixing of other markers) but can still have skin the color of dark coffee….and the reverse is also true. You can have 20% of your DNA with markers that show that your grandparent stepped on these shores directly from Africa and be as blonde and blue-eyed as can be.

        • Trip Space-Parasite

All human DNA comes from Africa. It’s just paused in other places along the way once in a while.

          • SadDemInTex

I am going to say this slowly. There. Is. No.Race. In. Human. Biology. The reason I say this is because people just love to keep saying “we all come from Africa”. This is, essentially, a meaningless bit of gobbledygook for white supremacists who might actually believe in science (and Darwin) enough to acknowledge that Homo sapiens have been around a very long time. Modern DNA also proves that we all have Neanderthal DNA (and they were not Homo sapiens but were close enough to breed successfully with them). If we ascribe to Darwinian principles the markers (alleles) to which we attribute “racial” characteristics were all predicated on climate and surroundings. Dark skin for sunny, hot regions…light skin for regions that got little light (especially in winter). Like all plants and animals it took a million years for this to create these zones. Thus there is a higher percentage of people who come from the Scandinavian zone to have the alleles for very light skin and hair. DNA tests that can be done now reveal very closely where in the last 200 or fewer years your family came from. This is why 74 million Americans who think they are “white” actually have DNA which shows that they have ancestors in the last 100 years that are from Africa. This is immaterial in the scheme of the cosmos but in this country which ascribes very tightly to ONE endogamous color line…this, my friend, is a terrible issue.

          • Trip Space-Parasite

I don’t have the slightest notion how you got from the common and, evolutionarily speaking, pretty recent origin of homo sapiens (including homo sapiens neanderthalensis) to “race is a biological thing”, and I’m not sure about your understanding of evolutionary biology, but whatever. Read up or don’t, as you see fit. For purposes of Wonkette, it’s enough that you realize Nazis are in fact completely full of shit.

          • SadDemInTex

I wrote that there is no “race” in human biology. I don’t know how to be clearer. In human biology the concept of “race” as we think of it (Black, Asian, White…whatever) does not exist. The way we use “race” has always been a cultural construct which was devised to oppress people by other people who have power.

    God damn it.

    • DainBramage

Nope. I don’t want to know until I can see it on my nice TV.

    • MrTusks

Everything on Game of Thrones is more believable than real life right now.

      • Lizzietish81

I have to admit, I’m kind of annoyed with this season so far. I just don’t buy the Jon/Dany thing. Others are like “Oh they have great chemistry” and I’m not seeing it, I’m thinking they’re saying that because it’s what they’ve been expecting the whole time.

Honestly he has way better chemistry with his not sister Sansa.

Otoh, Lena Headey needs to win all the awards for acting from now till the heat death of the universe.

        • Resistance Fighter Astraea

I really need Littlefinger to die now.

          • Skwerl the Nazi Puncher

I want Littlefinger to survive and face the mess he created knowing that it was all in vain.

          • Resistance Fighter Astraea

I personally don’t care about his long term experiences, I just want to be done with him. He’s worse than a hated villain, he’s a tiresome one.

        • Thiazin Red

Also, Jon is not smart. It bugs me that people treat Jon like he should be in charge of anything.

          • Lizzietish81

I kinda like how Sansa is really in charge but he’s like “in charge”, especially right now. When he comes back I’m sure he’ll mansplain to her some more.

Which brings me to what the fuck Arya? Sansa is trying to keep the whole alliance together when the figure head is out having awkward conversations with dragons and you’re giving her shit? I never thought I’d tell her to stfu but there it is.

          • Thiazin Red

The writers have to periodically make someone a total idiot in order to make their story work.

Also, why the fuck shouldn’t Sansa take over? Who is actually there getting shit together and not off doing dumbass stuff?

          • Resistance Fighter Astraea

I think it could work in theory but it didn’t. Arya would be loyal to Jon and old grudges between the sisters could come between them. But they didn’t lay the groundwork because everything is so rushed.

        • MrTusks

I see it from Dany’s end, Jon is being a numbskull as usual. I wonder if she’ll ever find out he’s her nephew. Clarke’s performance when he said he was going beyond the wall again was pretty good, I thought. Of course, I agree that Headey is the MVP of every scene she’s in.

The pacing is uncharacteristically breakneck, but since we’re getting close to the (probably literal) fireworks factory, I’m okay that we’re skipping over questions like “How did Jon get from Dragonstone to the ass end of the wall in six hours?” and “How was anyone able to tell Bronn to arrange a meeting between the Queen’s public enemy number one and her brother/lover/general?” After six years, I like that we just go straight to things happening.

And if I may be crass, Sophie Turner was wearin that black dress with the fur shoulder pads last week.

          • Lizzietish81

The fast travel shit doesn’t bother me.

Also while I love Lena Headey I have to say I’m not digging her dresses this season. I know what she’s going for but while Sophie Turner works that look, it looks weird on Lena. Maybe that’s what they’re going for.

          • MrTusks

I like how Cersei’s dresses all look like chainmail this season. Maybe they actually are.

          • Lizzietish81

It keeps getting further and further away from the books, all to the detriment of the story. No, I don’t think Martin is going to unceremoniously kill off everyone from each faction that isn’t considered one of the central heroes or villains.

        • Resistance Fighter Astraea

I haven’t read the books. I think that some things have improved since they ran out of book, and some things have definitely gotten worse. I don’t know how much of it is just coincidence, like the general shift in tone from constant misery and good(ish) people being beat down to starting to take action and claim some power.

Each year, the south will have to pay reparations an annual maintenance fee for its upkeep, to be distributed to the descendants of slaves, to be utilized to ensure everyone from both sides can tell their story. The centerpiece of the park will be a giant chess board with statues from each side facing off against each other. There will be rides and food vendors and educational exhibits.

Once the NCWTP is all set up, then all other statues on local or federal property will be removed since our dear leader the president doesn’t like participation trophies to be awarded.

  • Alienist

There are good people on both sides of the argument. They are simply not very interesting. Skinhead Nazis are interesting — horrible, but interesting. They make very good targets for righteous anger. Violent antifascists are also interesting. Conflicts between the two groups are made-for-tv gold.

However, if I were looking for one of the “good” southerners — by which I mean one who can express shame for the legacy of slavery and responsibility for initiating a disastrous war — would I look for that person among the people who gathered at the “Unite the Right” march? I don’t know, but I don’t think so. On the other hand, if I wanted to find a “good” antifascist — by which I mean one who will respect all people and oppose the use of physical and economic power to oppress other races, cultures, and nations — would I look for that person among the protesters arrayed against the “Unite the Right”? Yes, I think I could find them there.

I hope that progressives can avoid seeing people in “black-and-white.” I also hope that we can avoid the temptation to judge past generations solely by our modern standards. We should be careful throwing around the word “treason” too casually in public. It dilutes the meaning so that it does not work well when we really need it. Most of the southerners at the time of the civil war were not treasonous. If you claim they are, please cite the legal cases proving this. They were accepted back into the Union as fellow citizens. Try not to write people off as “bad people” too easily. There are ignorant people, hateful people, arrogant people, people with delusions of grandeur, uncaring people, and violent people; but many of these defects can be corrected in those who are willing. Let’s not fight against people — let’s fight against cruelty, heartlessness, oppression, and racism. Let’s let people know that it is not what you have done that makes you our friend or our enemy, it is what you will do.

O.K. Vented again. Idealism overload aborted.

Just because they were forgiven by the United States doesn’t mean Confederate soldiers were not traitors to the United States.

      • Canned Covfefe

This! How is it they were not traitors?

      • Alienist

They were loyal to a version of the United States that was doomed to fail. The south saw the states as in a voluntary union. They could do what they wanted, and no other state could force them to change their mind. The very important issue of slavery was a problem from the start. It was allowed because the founders knew that it would prevent the formation of the union. The problem grew until it could no longer be settled by mere argument and debate — it erupted into war.

The Union stood for strong federalism. The Confederacy for states rights. These are the ideals that had been argued for decades as the United States struggled to discover what kind of nation it would be. While the argument was merely verbal and intellectual, the states rights side prevailed. When the issue became slavery, the federal side started to prevail. Unable to win the verbal and political argument, the Confederacy resorted to war. The issues were the same as they had always been, but the means of deciding the issue became more deadly.

The Confederacy was not against what the United States was historically. They merely held to a view that was doomed to fail because the states would not allow other states to perpetuate an evil while still being part of the union. Rather than kicking them out and allowing the evil to persist, a strong federalism was adopted by the Union to coerce a minimum standard of behavior. In the end, the federalists (Union, good guys) won. The states rights (Confederacy, bad guys) lost. Both sides were fighting for a view of what the United States would be. The majority of them accepted the decision of the war and adapted to citizenship in a new kind of United States that was heavily (too heavily according to the modern Republicans) federal. As Shelby Foote says, “Before the Civil War, people said ‘The United States are…”, after the Civil War, people said ‘The United States is….'”

        • tomamitai

If the southerners were for states rights, why did they send armed bounty hunters into northern states to capture Black people who had escaped slavery? Why didn’t they honor the rights of those states, instead of invoking the Federal Constitution’s escaped slave clause as justification for ignoring those states laws that freed escaped slaves? They did that shit for years before the civil war, and they sometimes grabbed Black people who weren’t even escaped slaves; I think that’s what the movie “12 Years A Slave” was about.

I was too lazystruggling to find the words to express this next part, so I Googled and found someone else who already did a better job than I could, and here’s a quote:

No one seems to be able to agree on which specific Southern rights were in danger, but that’s really beside the point. The fact is, Southern states seceded in spite of states’ rights, and the Confederacy’s founding documents offer plenty of proof.

In its constitution, Confederate leaders explicitly provided for the federal protection of slaveholding:

“In all such territory the institution of negro slavery, as it now exists in the Confederate States, shall be recognized and protected by Congress and by the Territorial government; and the inhabitants of the several Confederate States and Territories shall have the right to take to such Territory any slaves lawfully held by them in any of the States or Territories of the Confederate States.”

It’s a provision that clashes jarringly with neo-Confederate mythos—how could the South secede to preserve states’ rights if its own constitution mandated legal, federally protected slavery across state borders?

You should go read the rest of that article, it does a great job of demolishing the myth that the civil war was about states rights.

          • Alienist

I never said that the Confederacy was logically consistent. They realized that the kind of union they wanted could not exist. During the war, states tried to withhold or restrict the use of their troops in the Confederate Army. It was like herding cats. Despite what they wanted, they needed a strong federal government, which was exactly what they were rebelling against.

As for the states rights argument. I think it is correct, but it should be noted that the particular right the states were wanting was the right to continue slavery. They may have had other concerns as well, but it was the slavery issue that pushed the ultimate break from the union.

    • Atheist

I hope that progressives can avoid seeing people in “black-and-white.”

Tell that to black men who constantly face gunfire and violence from white cops.

Tell that to Jews who constantly face vandalism, harassment, and death threats from neo-Nazi psychopaths.

It’s so easy to take the moral high road and lecture everyone else when you’re not the one facing certain death.

Goodbye, have a nice life, and waste someone else’s time arguing about this. I have no time for Nazi sympathizers, or even people that resemble them.

      • Alienist

Seeing people in “black-and-white” just plants the seeds for increased conflict. It is the basis for the black men being shot by white cops. It is the basis for the Jews being oppressed. If people saw each other as real, whole people with value that transcends their mere monetary value in the capitalistic system or voting value in the political system, we would treat people better. Black men are not evil. Cops are not racist. Jews are not a threat to nations and cultures. But some black men are violent (as are some white men, and black women, and white women). Some cops are racist (as are some businessmen, doctors, farmers, theater owners, etc.). I don’t know what to say about Jews, I’ve never seen them as threatening or as any particular kind of problem. I guess they’re just like the rest of us.

Goodbye. Have a nice life. Don’t label too many people as Nazi sympathizers without knowing them.

        • Don’t label too many people as Nazi sympathizers without knowing them

If you say that Nazis are “good people” that makes you a Nazi sympathizer.

Don’t need or want to get to know you any more.

It’s not a “label” if it’s true, for example “dogshit” is not a “just a label” if something is actually dogshit.

          It’s an “accurate description”. 😊

          • Alienist

I never said that all Nazi’s were good people. I do know that all Nazi’s are not alike. I presume that not all the people who showed up to the march were alike. Don’t make the same mistake that the Trump supporters make. When Hillary said that half of Trump’s supporters could be put in the “basket of deplorables,” they pretended that she said that all of them were deplorable and wore that label with defiant pride. For those people who find themselves allying with the Nazis, white nationalists, and alt-right for no good reason and who might still have a conscience to awaken, don’t dismiss them. We may want them back once they awaken to their error.

    • BosGrl

Your heart is in the right place, for sure. And I think we would certainly let anyone back into the “good people” fold if they have a “come to Jesus” moment and realize their errors. They terrorized black people during slavery and continue to do so through Jim Crow and up to 2017. They terrorize LGBTQ and anyone that doesn’t fit their perception of a “real” American. If they march with people who have no problem committing murder, they are not good people.

      • Alienist

Exactly right. That’s why I think I would have search like Diogenes for an honest man in that group. (It just frustrates me when violent anarchists (I know, OT) infiltrate progressive protestors and taint us with their destruction. It fuels the “both sides do it” crowd.)

    • thixotropic jerk

Aren’t you the same (non-) commenter that tried endlessly arguing on and on in a previous thread how the south didn’t start the Civil War because “southern culture wasn’t wholly encompassed by slavery”? They was just mad cause they wanted states rights? [To continue living in a culture wholly encompassed by slavery] And how after the war all the confeder rats went home and worked hard and paid taxes and smoked corncob pipes while innocently whistling their favorite songs of the south? [And at night put on their hoods and lynched a few tens of thousands of uppity dark US of A-ns citizens? Sorry just a few not-so-good good guys wore hoods while the good because hoodless southerners watched]? Yes you are back again trying to soft peddle your crap about both siderism. You’re making grave and insulting mistakes to lecture any of us on how we’re not being fair enough to those poor innocent “good people” who think Reconstruction-era monuments to oppression, white power over, and yes slavery and the “good people” who benefited and supported it should be given a friendly pass or we’re being meanies. Everyone in the slave states except surprisingly slaves although I’m waiting for that argument to slide unctuously out of your mouth next apology post benefitted from the slavery as a southern way of life thing. The yahoos paling around with their nazi buddies are like yourself miseducated, undereducated or just plain pig ignorant racist monument defenders who all need to be treated like traitors that they are. You don’t treat racists and people who associate with racists and have racist ideas but say they’re not racist because they’re liars as “good people.” They are not good people; they and you are exactly why violence against people of color and Jews and the differently gendered and we who love and support them has continued for way too fucking long and is on the upswing. For the last time: GTFOH if you’re going to keep promoting that bullshit!!!!

      • thixotropic jerk

Oh and by the way -because yes I peeked at your comment history to try and find your quote then for context- as a mental health “professional” to support conversion therapy you are sick and in need of “treatment” yourself.

“Still, I think that ethical, voluntary conversion therapy and continued research on similar therapies should be legal and promoted within the mental health field for people of all ages who are competent to consent.”

        • I call these Morons with Master’s degrees “Intentionally Ignorant”

      • SkinlessGenderlessMan

There were good points made in that post. Thank you for researching other posts as well. The conversion therapy crap needs to be appended to the Geneva Convention.

      • Alienist

I don’t know what thixotropism is, but the jerk in your name seems appropriate.

        1. No, I didn’t say in any way that the south did not start the war or that the war was not about states rights to continue slavery.

        2. I don’t know what your education is, but I am very well educated (though not with a focus on history).

        3. Your attempt to put the label “racist” on me has no basis in reality and is part of the problem that the term doesn’t seem to mean much any more.

        4. I’m not sure what the “crap about siderism” comment is about. I am against “both sides do it” arguments. I assume you are, too.

        5. I’m not sure what “grave and insulting mistakes” you think I have made. You say that the monuments are to “oppression, white power, and slavery.” You can certainly see them as that if you wish. But that is not required and simply fuels the division in our country. If you have an interest in fixing this rather than worsening it, you might try another interpretation of the monuments (and the people that they represent). You could see the monuments as showing how brave, intelligent, valiant men can be led into terrible, destructive, and wasteful defense of immoral (but socially approved) practices like slavery. This is a lesson we still have not learned, so it would be good to remember it. We could argue about whether these statues have a place in promoting this lesson, but there is nothing insulting about the argument.

        6. Finally, your statement that I am “exactly why violence against people of color and Jews and the differently gendered and [you] who love and support them has continued for way too… long and is on the upswing” is a LIE. You have read what you wanted to hear in what I said. You have not understood my point. You are so eager to hate, that you will attack your friends because they are not exactly like you. I have stood to defend the oppressed. I have openly opposed efforts to treat ANY person (including those I disagree with) as less than a fully human person with intrinsic value that is not diminished by his race, gender, beliefs, actions, sexual preference, wealth, or any other superficial quality he has. My sister is a transgender woman. Unlike you, I do not give myself the luxury of hatefully dismissing those I disagree with.

        7. Finally, I will not GTFOH. I will oppose your hate as long as I am not banhammered, even while I support much of your values.

I find myself wondering the same thing. There’s a guy who works in my office now and then who I actually find really hot (I have a thing for punk rock guys with sexy arms covered in tattoos) BUT he’s got the shaved sides/longish and slicked straight back haircut. Hmm. I’ve never actually spoken to the guy, none of his tattoos strike me as nazi/white supremacist and he has been wearing a hat every time I see him lately, but I just can’t shake that question in my head.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

The undercut was super popular a couple of years ago with men and women alike. Hell, I think P!nk has this hairstyle.

        • alpacapunchbowl

Very true. And he’s had his hair like that for the past year or so that I’ve been crossing paths with him, so it’s not like he’s been seeing nazis on tv and emulating their look. Weeeeell, … what do we have here? I can’t believe it, a true (?), honest-to-God (?) believer in magic language (in the wild no less, well, at least in Wonkette’s wild, wild foren)!

Rumpelstilzchen is a cautionary (fairy) tale, not a how-to manual.

If you can’t/won’t/don’t see why calling out “radical Islam” is idiotic on its face, what follows will probably not make sense to you.

Islam can’t be radical. Some of its adherents can be radical, but as with any belief system, it needs a vessel in which to embody itself. Without it, that belief system is merely a potentiality. … a bit like that ultimate of box cats: Schrodinger’s cat.

Setting that aside for a moment, “radical” islam spreads a total/complete net across all of Islan. It then becomes entirely meaningless, a mere soundbite, mindlessly beebopping along.

And even setting that aside for another moment, “radical” means root. When not-Muslims go back to their roots (ie are “radical”), they get kudos for this act of traditional religion. Muslims, oth, are one tiny step away from shouting Allahu Ackbar and pulling the safety on the detonation device.

You know, during the war, there probably were some decent people in the Wehrmacht who didn’t have a choice with conscription. It was a war, and they tried to kill us, and we tried to kill them.

But the SS? I somehow have a hard time thinking that decent people joined the SS. A good share of those protesting the Lee statue probably thought the SS were great and they’re sorry they didn’t get a chance to join them.

Nazis pretty much want to kill anyone who’s not a Nazi, and kind of puts a chill on reasonable discussions.

    • Gascoigne

I ran across this little bit of history some years back: during the 2nd World War, little countries like Belgium and the Netherlands had little choice but to submit to the 3rd Reich. A few citizens of these subjugated countries did join with the SS, not as traitors and evil-doers, but as patriots and as basic decent human beings trying to obviate some of the worst evil-doing in Nazi conquered Europe, and to keep tabs on what the Germans were doing – they had no choice – the Nazis and Hitler were merciless.
Almost all of them came from the elite of their countries: aristocrats, doctors and lawyers, wealthy burghers with standing in their towns, cities, and provinces. And when the Allies landed, these individuals did their part to advance the Allied cause.

Then the NCOs, including, especially, the sergeant-major, picked on his buddy Vierbein and nearly drove him to suicide. Asch happened to be nearby and barely managed to stop him.
      That really pissed him off.
It all rang pretty true to me and it was written by a German, H.H. Kirst, so I accepted that maybe that was how it was for a lot of soldiers.

Like all female employees at Fox, it depends on how short her skirt is.

    • Moar Wordz

I couldn’t even watch the clip, that’s how angry I felt. Evan’s description was enough – what was with the ” sound ” and ” NO ! ” off camera ?! Did she realize that her spin was being eclipsed ?!

      • Angela Ruzzo

I try to watch these videos but I can usually only stand about 30 seconds, sometimes less. Less, in this case.

    • Hollyinla

That’s a good question. Daddy Huntsman is a rich guy and so is hubby. She might be sitting on that couch lying for free. 45 does want Daddy Huntsman to be ambassador to Russia. Gotta stay in 45’s good graces, you know. Kinda like Hucklebee. He lies for 45 daily so Sarah can help pay for the mansion Daddy Hucklebee bought down in Florida. Daughters helping daddies. Sad.

      • Angela Ruzzo

It’s funny how these things run in families. Is it Nature or Nurture? It is obvious that role modeling plays a big part in the development of a child’s moral and ethical standards.

  • meanlawyermom

I watched the whole video. I almost never watch the whole video. This broke my heart. I wanted to share an original link and googled it. Amazing how the Fox News website isn’t anywhere near at least the first page of results.

    • Incoming Ham

Scary thing – I was scanning the AM channels and ended up landing on his show. He was frighteningly reasonable.

      • babsMD

I think he has gotten back on his meds, thank goodness.

        • Incoming Ham

Maybe that’s it. He had some guy on who was flogging his book about how (basically) blacks are just as racist as whites. He quite obviously didn’t appreciate this guy. at all. Beck seemed a little concern troll-y (prior to the book interview) but basically kept saying to conservatives the us and them thing doesn’ t work etc.

So in the last week Ted Cruz and Glenn Beck have made some sense. There is some sort of tear in the fabric of the universe.

Fear not though, it will never open completely. It’s being held together by Limbaugh, who is still a apologist, lying prick. Fox News also, too.

  • Wookie Monster

“Would you two black people stop crying so that I can whitesplain about statues and history?”

    • TEX Dept. of Space Tacos

      and slavery and racism…

I have opinions on this issue of course, but as a white dude, I’m just gonna shut up and sit and listen to POC’s experiences and opinions.

      • Wookie Monster

As a white dude, I have no problem expressing the opinion that slavery and racism are awful need to be eradicated from the world entirely.

        • TEX Dept. of Space Tacos

of course, I was referring specifically to the issue of tearing down this monuments (which i also support, if you’re wondering). I’m just sayin…

        • Keith Taylor

Excellent. And to think that I’ve been prejudiced against Wookie Monsters up until now. Slavers and racists have often used organized religion to justify their actions, and it’s hard to argue with that since organized religion is a bit short on rational content to begin with.
Do Wookie Monsters have organized religion? If not, I’m inclined to see that as another point in your favour.

  • TEX Dept. of Space Tacos

“But it’s another thing for Abby Huntsman just to sit there and refuse to listen to the real actual people on her show, who are LITERALLY CRYING, and yet insist on sticking to the Trump-approved talking points her bosses told her to say.”

THIS..the paler among us (not you guys, Americans) should shut up and listen more.
It’s one of my more recent rules for life: “It’s amazing what you hear when you shut up and listen.”

    • Eo Raptor

You can’t hear with your mouth open.

    • HooverVilles

It makes it harder to be willingly ignorant when they listen, sooooo plug the ears and say la la la la la.

  • Nick.Trite

Every single person who claims these statues are *~*HiStOrY*~* should be required to verbally acknowledge the actual fact that almost none of them were actually built during or near the Civil War. Almost all of them were built post-Reconstruction, during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras, ya know those times when black people were starting to get their rights.

    • CaliCheeseSucks

      This.

Not to mention, it’s not “erasing” history to remove them. The history will still be taught. It’s simply that these fuckers aren’t getting honored in public for being racist fucking traitors to the nation.

    • Keith Taylor

And many a racist was crying, “No no no, we want our sanitized post-Reconstruction version of what our beloved and wholly mythical ante-bellum South (thanks, Frank Yerby) was like, the South in ‘Birth of a Nation’ and ‘Gone With the Wind’, with Scarlett and Rhett and the KKK being knightly heroes and the former slaves being miserable once they were freed, and wanting slavery back and kindly ol’ Massa, please suh, and the Freedmen’s Bureau being a monstrous instrument of lying injustice, all that completely valid righteous stuff, and the blacks would still have been nice and quiet even in the 1960s if only the Communists hadn’t got them all stirred and crazy.
      Q. E. fuckin’ D.

    • Petunia Cat

Saw chart somebody made. They really amped up the putting them at SCHOOLS after of Brown V Board of Education. 🤦🏻‍♀️

  • pgjack

America has many terrible things in it’s history; California’s genocide of it’s native Americans, a total ban on Chinese immigration for nearly 50 years, slavery and overt racism that has been aftermath of slavery, the current persecution of hispanics and the past and present misogyny. All of these egregious flaws are only exacerbated by white supremacists, nazis and the KKK. A lot of wounds have to be healed in my country and a bunch of dumb assed white people marching around waving swastikas doesn’t help. Our history holds a lot of bad things, white supremacy and nazis are two of the worst.

  • UnicornV

I was really happy to see that my bros and sisters pulled down the local Confederate guy in front of the courthouse in Durham. I was about to write a few emails to my friends back in Gainesville taunting them for not having taken care of their Confederate guy and that Durham beat ’em to the punch. Then I saw the little news article that a couple of maintenance workers had already taken it down without a protest that very day. Crap.

    • MilwaukeeKent

Hey, a bright side, fewer emails to send and one less Confederate monument. Remember, it’s always darkest before the storm, uhm…something like that.

  • chadingo

  • Not Flat – ROUND!

That was extremely powerful and moving – except Abby of course, who was pathetic.
My hope is that all (or even just some) of Fox’s viewership will be slightly more “awake” to the realities of the situation that faces us.

LOL – The leadership at Fox must be really pissed off today.

      • Mother

Yet you did! I guess you are not only a nobody but a typical liberal hypocrite.

    • Andrea Jacobsen

Soulless Abby Huntsman, dotter of “moderate” Rethug coward John Huntsman, played a faux moderate on MSNBC in a short lived panel show… now she can get her real fascist on at Der Fox’s Lair. I’m sure the hope was these black Republicans would give Trumpf cover. But the tears were baffling to her. (However, Caldwell was later on MSNBC and was def defensive about his party. And not crying about it).

  • Asparago

Oh, it was fine. Great interview actually (the interviewees were great, and whats-her-name was unobtrusive unless you are hunting for smirks)

  • MilwaukeeKent

There MAY be “good people” on both sides of the Confederate statue debates (though IMHO still wrong-headed on the pro-keeping-them-up side) but they weren’t marching along in the parade of a national gathering of actual Nazis, racists and anti-Semites who suddenly feel free to let their freak flag fly under a POTUS they know shares their evil views.
The “good people” (to the extent that they are good in some larger sense of being otherwise decent) can argue in terms of not erasing history, landmark preservation, or just not messing with art no matter how mundane aesthetically.
THERE WERE NOT good people on both sides of that march. Everyone on the marching side was a Fascist attracted to violence. Some very few on the the protest side were violent and came to fight These statues by and large were erected in the era of skid row, uh sorry, I mean Jim Crow, The plurality year for putting them up was 1909. After the GOP began treating civil rights for blacks with relatively benign indifference post mid-1870s, the South had a way to put down blacks once again and did they ever. Jim Crow and these statues were a way to throw it in their faces every day.
These monuments have to be put in modern context, move them to a single park or museum, give them away to heritage groups, set monuments to black heroes apposite them, do something (if only take them down in the middle of night like Baltimore just did).
I think someone posted an editorial cartoon, something, that suggested the plaques on the statues just be replaced with a participation trophy thingie reading “Civil War — Second Place”. My personal favorite solution.

  • Rickyphoo

Proof positive that a person can be pretty on the outside and ugly as fuck on the inside.

    • Hollyinla

That’s what greediness for a fat paycheck ( and a job for Daddy Huntsman ) will get you. As a woman, I hate to say this but Abby Huntsman is a breedy glitch with no soul.

  • Imma be that guy:

She sucks as a simulacrum of a human, true, but going on FOX News expecting sympathy or empathy is just foolish.

    • HooverVilles

I always wonder why people agree to appear on FOX.

      • Incoming Ham

Hope springs eternal. There is also some monetary compensation, but I doubt it’s worth this.

    • Regret

You can’t convince people by NOT talking to them. And killing is illegal, so the only way to win the fight is to talk to your enemies.
      It sucks, I know.

  • Johnny Appleseed

Fox needs to get her daddy on the air and ask him his thoughts of Donald J Trump, his soon to be boss, as the Ambassador to Russia, yet to be confirmed. It would be a very interesting squirm for Huntsman. He seems (or seemed) to have morals and that greatly contradicts with the constant and consistent lies of this president.

  • fawkedifiknow

Just wait until America gets a load of Trump’s new Communications Director (the Mooches old job, for 10 minutes), Hope Hicks. If you thought he had already plumbed the depths of derp for his White House, guess again. She is a looker, but Jesus, is she DUMB. Kellyanne Conway is a piker compared to her.

Sorry about the reference to a woman’s “looks”, but the truth must be told….

  • Subliberal

According to my real Dad (and I know this because I hired several Beverly Hills lawsuit legal eagles to spy on these fucks, but that’s another story) _ that woman in the middle was born Abi Fuks Ywu. In North the Korea, and is a (non self-flowering) plant.

  • kareemachan

Well, she has to work extra hard to be Faux Noisy cuz she’s not a blonde, ya know…

  • everstar

Did someone drop a house on her sister or something?

  • smitallica

We simply MUST have these statues so we can remember our history! This is why Germany is full of statues of Hitler. So they can remember World War II.

  • Vavoline Marie Johnson

Our president is such an art connoisseur that of course he would be upset!

  • IdiotsforPalin
