Today was the funeral for Heather Heyer, who was murdered by Nazis in Charlottesville last weekend, and we wanted to make sure you saw what her mama, Susan Bro, had to say. We don’t have a bunch of pithy comments to make here, so we’re going to give you a video, a transcript, then we’re going to say it’s your open thread. Got it? Video, transcript, cat picture … shit, we fucked it up already.

Let’s try again.

My child’s famous Facebook post was, “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.”

She paid attention. She made a lot of us pay attention. Oh, my gosh, dinner with her, we knew it was going to be an ordeal of listening. And conversation. And perhaps disagreement, but it was going to happen.

And so my husband would say, okay, I’m going to go out in the car and play on my video game for a while and we would sit and we’d grill and she and I would talk and I would listen and we would negotiate and I would listen and we talked about all the stuff.

We talked about politics. We talked about anything that caught her eye that she felt was fair, unfair, she would talk about her feelings about the office, and how things were going. I mean, she just talked. The girl loved to talk and she was single, so there was nobody to listen at home, so mama got a lot of it. And that was wonderful.

You never think you’re going to bury your child. You never think to take those pictures. They asked me for pictures for this and I struggled.

I had pictures from her childhood. But I had to go to Facebook to find pictures of my child because we were always together. I saw her a couple of times a month at least and we would text each other fairly often and Facebook message at bedtime, I love you, I love you, you’re doing okay? Yep, I love you.

So I have no regrets on that part. Take pictures of the ones that you love because you don’t know when they’re not going to be there.

But here’s what I want to say to you today. This could be a storm in a teacup and could all be for nothing. … I could have said, look, let’s don’t do this publicly, let’s have a small private funeral, but, you know, that’s not who Heather was. Anybody who knew Heather said, yeah, this is the way she had to go, big and large. Had to have the world involved because that’s my child. She’s just that way. Always has been. And she will continue to be.

Because here’s the message. Although Heather was a caring and compassionate person, so are a lot of you. A lot of you go that extra mile. And I think the reason that what happened to Heather has struck a chord is because we know that what she did is achievable. We don’t all have to die. We don’t all have to sacrifice our lives.

They tried to kill my child to shut her up. Well, guess what, you just magnified her.

Thank you. Thank you. So here’s what I want to happen. You ask me what can I do? So many caring people, pages of pages of pages of stuff I’m going through, I’m reading pages of pages of pages how she is touching the world.

I want this to spread. I don’t want this to die. This is just the beginning of Heather’s legacy. This is not the end of Heather’s legacy.

You need to find in your heart that small spark of accountability. What is there that I can do to make the world a better place? What injustice do I see and what to turn away? “I don’t want to get involved in that, I don’t want to speak up, they’ll be annoyed with me, my boss might think less of me.” I don’t care. You poke that finger at yourself like Heather would have done and you make it happen! You take that extra step. You find a way to make a difference in the world.

My child had a high school education, my child was no saint. She was hard to raise, because everything was a negotiation. Not kidding.

But, you know what, she was a firm believer in whatever she believed. And let’s do that. Let’s find that spark of conviction. Let’s find in ourselves that action. Let’s spread this. Let’s have the uncomfortable dialogue.

It ain’t easy sitting down and saying, well, why are you upset? It ain’t easy sitting down and going, yeah, well, I think this way and I don’t agree with you. But I’m going to respectfully listen to what you have to say. We’re not going to sit around and shake hands and go Kumbaya and I’m sorry, it is not all about forgiveness. I know that that’s not a popular trend.

But the truth is, we are going to have our differences, we are going to be angry with each other, but let’s channel that anger not into hate, not into violence, not into fear, but let’s channel that difference, that anger into righteous action.

Right now, down the road, there is a blood drive going on in Heather’s name. Right now, there are people who are here willing to listen to one another and talk to one another. Last night in New England they had a peaceful rally in Heather’s name to have some difficult dialogues.

If you ever want to see what one of those dialogues look like, look at her Facebook posts. I’m telling you, they were rough sometimes. But they were dialogues. And the conversations have to happen. That’s the only way we’re going to carry Heather’s spark through.

So, remember in your heart, if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention. And I want you to pay attention, find what’s wrong, don’t ignore it, don’t look the other way, you make a point to look at it, and say to yourself, what can I do to make a difference? And that’s how you’re going to make my child’s death worthwhile. I’d rather have my child, but by golly, if I got to give her up, we’re going to make it count.

And FUCK NAZIS.

Now you are in tears, and now you may have an open thread.

He gives out his phone number (yes it is his) but somehow I think it’s bait to get leftists to dirty dial him so he can claim more victimhood.

But fuck that shit, right? Eleven million people died the last time the Nazis were given a chance. Nazis are perps not victims.

Do you guys remember last December when Editrix did me the huge honor of making one of the first open threads about being sure to take pictures over the holidays? Please – this summer, when you’re at the BBQs and sitting at the park and enjoying your family, don’t forget to take pictures and fuck it if you don’t like how you look. You will not regret it.

Thank you, Susan Bro, for raising an amazing person who lived the change she wanted to see. I will think about this young woman and her family every day; they are an inspiration. Heather will never, ever be forgotten. All of us who lose kids worry about this, but Heather’s parents will never have to worry.

I spent an unreasonable amount of morning on Facebook, doing just what Ms. Bro said we are supposed to do, so I feel better about that. But I still feel weird that most of the people I was arguing with were Jewish defenders of white supremacists.

    • House0fTheBlueLights

I couldn’t do it. I went through one thread where a friend posted a “Save Robert E. Lee” meme, and responded to every one of their idiot talking points. But by the time I was done I was shaking and sick to my stomach. I unfriended the lot of them and haven’t been back to the thread. I know as a striving white ally I’m supposed to be doing the educating, but I can’t take these people.

My friend who hosted the discussion is generally liberal and certainly anti-KKK, but he is hawkish on Israel though, and a lot of his friends are full on right wingers. I get the pro-Israel part, though I happen to think Netanyahu is the worst thing for Israel and the world, but the general right wing thing is nuts. Strange bedfellows in strange bedsheets.

        • Remind him how the Nazis were screaming about killing Jews. In Charlottesville VA. In 2017.

      • BreakingDeadMen

The ‘highlight,’ this one guy goes with the whole “KKK is the left, they are Democrats” and pivots to the “Nazis are socialists, it says National Socialist.” I say “No reputable scholar places the Nazis on the right, the Socialist part is another of Hitler’s lies,” the fellow actually replies: “You don’t consider D’Nesh D’Souza (certainly spelled wrong, but FTG if I’m going to look it up), Mark Levin and (someone equally asinine) scholarly?” I got to tell him no, stop listening to hatemongers and felons and buy a radio with an FM band.

the Freedumb Cacas are having a sad because Straus was initially elected to the speakership in 2009 by a coalition of moderate Republicans and all the Dems. since then, the Freedumbies have tried to challenge him twice garnering votes in the single digits. they think that if the Republican Caucus votes first, they’ll get someone more dumb like themselves. unfortunately, the rest of the Republican Caucus thinks it’s fine and dandy to just have the whole House vote on speaker without the extra step.

Today I had lunch with my 92-year-old father who fought the Nazis in WWII. We were looking at old family photos that recently surfaced (the earliest dated to around 1915). All I could think of were all those beautiful people who wouldn’t be around today if the Nazis had gotten their hands on them.

Heather Heyer died fighting Nazis on US soil, and the so-called POTUS defended the ideology of the people who killed her. This is not at all ok, this is not just another news story, and this is not going to go away.

More Durham, NC Radicals Arrested After Destroying 100-Year Old Confederate Monument

A group of Socialists, representing the World Workers Party sought to create the same kind of news-grabbing mayhem that went on in Charlottesville over the weekend, so they descended on the statue of a lone, unnamed Confederate soldier. …

Got something sensible for us, WaPo link?

Trump’s solution to racism is ‘jobs.’ It’s not that simple.

President Trump believes he has the cure for America’s racial tensions: more jobs.

“If we continue to create jobs at levels that I’m creating jobs, I think that’s going to have a tremendous impact, positive impact on race relations,” Trump said Tuesday at a heated news conference where he was repeatedly asked about why it took him so long to denounce the violent actions of white nationalists and neo-Nazis in Charlottesville over the weekend.

In Trump’s view, everyone will be happy once they are working. “They will be making a lot of money, much more than they ever thought possible,” the president said.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Jobs are not magic fairy dust that can cure everything. Racism is a deeper problem than just economics. Even in periods of strong employment and economic growth, the United States and other nations have still experienced ugly flare ups of hate crimes and riots.

tl;dr: this is about finding a way to make love trump hate, not about economics FFS.

    But let’s be clear.
What’s really ‘deplorable’ is that Donald Trump hired a major advocate for the so-called ‘alt-right’ movement to run his campaign, and that David Duke and other white supremacists see him as a champion of their values.
I won’t stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign…

What’s the point of white supremacy if we can’t appropriate other people’s cultures when we feel like it?

  • Resistance Fighter Callyson

Got something else sensible for us, different WaPo link?

Sorry conservatives. There’s no equivalence between the extreme right and the extreme left.

But the idea that these hatemongers are here only because of “identity politics” dissolves under the barest examination. First of all, the ideology of white supremacy in America is as old as the country itself. And conservatives have been complaining about left identity politics for a couple of decades now, elevating every minor campus controversy into a national issue as though an argument in the Oberlin College student center demands the urgent attention of every Fox News viewer throughout the land. Yet somehow, the recent upsurge in the visibility and brazenness of white nationalists coincided with the candidacy and then presidency of Trump. What a coincidence!

The truth is that politics is, and always has been, about identity. Conservatives like to pretend that it’s only when women or racial minorities make arguments related to their particular concerns that sinister “identity politics” is at work, but nobody plays identity politics with more fervor and vigor than some conservatives do. When Republicans in the South run ads featuring Nancy Pelosi and shots of San Francisco, are they talking about issues? When they say their opponents don’t share “[insert our state here] values,” is that a policy argument? Was the Willie Horton ad about crime policy?

No conservative can claim that he or she didn’t realize that’s what Trump was doing when they endorsed him, advocated for him and supported him. They accepted that Trump was an ignorant fool and a misogynistic creep and deeply corrupt — and they also accepted that he was welcoming the racist right with open arms. It’s nice that so many of them have come out and said they’re opposed to murderous Nazi terrorism. But however they might try to explain away their own complicity, they can’t blame it on liberals.

tl;dr: STFU, wingnuts, you own this

    • weejee

Yes, we can try and talk to lefties looking to bring baseball bats to a demonstration and explain that is not a proper response to wingnut violence. Wear a hard hat or bicycle helmet, and if needed stop at the grocery on the way home to get a bit of beef steak to put on your black eye. But in American politics, violence is not a reasonable response to violence. As King and Gandhi showed, nonviolence is the proper path.

    • YoBunnyBunny

I heard Pence on the radio today, echoing donald: “Make no mistake. This was a tragedy.” Was it? A tragedy? Not an evil, fucked up human who thought he and his buddies were getting the short end of an imaginary stick and wanted that to be the fault of black folks and Mexicans and Jews and Muslims and lesbians and not the fault of smart white guys who cheat to make themselves wealthy at everyone’s expense. And who thought he should punish and eradicate these ‘other’ folk from ‘his’ country? I’m having a hard time with the word “tragedy” here…

    • natoslug

A tragedy. Just tragic that people are trying to pin blame for this on Trump when all he did was support Nazis, KKK, white supremacists and constantly call out to them and condone their violence. And now people are blaming poor innocent Trump? Truly tragic. I think that’s what Pence meant.

Hello all you wonderful Wonkers. I want to take a moment to say how much I appreciate the kind words yesterday. I’ve been really shaky the past few days. I think it’s safe to say we’ve all been put through the proverbial wringer. So thank you all for everything. I will forever be grateful to have found this place of sanctuary and friendship. Paul, my love? I’m most especially grateful I found you here, where would I be without you. All my love everyone, and here’s a picture.

    • Vagenda and Pee-ara

There was an article Charles Pierce wrote the other day that made me think of you. He had the same despair that we were talking about, but he also thinks this may FINALLY be the turning point we’ve been waiting for. Fingers crossed!

      • Holly

I’d like to thank you directly Vagenda You’ve always been right here for us,. You’re always the sweet voice of serenity and reason. Light and love to you my dear.

        • Vagenda and Pee-ara

That’s so nice to hear, especially since I always think I come off as angry on-line. I actually was feeling pretty good about the future, right up until November 8th, 2016. I don’t think a day has gone by since that day, where I haven’t either been afraid or angry. Trump is so much worse than I could have imagined. If it wasn’t for the Wonketariat I think I’d go mad. So thank you, and Paul, and the other kind souls here for tolerating me.

          • Holly

You are one of the best in this fine family of nasty nasty’s. I’m so glad we’re friends. Paul wants to know when you’re going to make the trek north to New England. Foliage here is spectacular and we’d love to have you come visit us up here in bear country.

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Funny, I was wondering when you guys, were coming to Folly again. My house is walking distance to downtown and three blocks from the beach. The fall season is particularly nice since the tourists are gone, and it’s not so freaking hot.

I absolutely do want to come to New England. My family is from the South, but I was mostly raised on Long Island and NYC, and that still feels like home to me.

          • Holly

You know you’re welcome here anytime. I love and adore Charleston. In my humble opinion it’s the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen. I have good family friends that have a house on Folly. When I lived in Florida we use to go up to Folly all the time to visit them – Pure Magic.

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

So when are you coming? Rebecca has my email address.

          • Holly

We’d be on our way down if we didn’t have work commitments and animals to consider. We live in the wild and wooly mountains and don’t have anyone to care for the critters so it’s hard for us to travel. (sad frowny faces). However! If we find someone who’d be willing to stay in the cabin and take care of the little ones we’ll be right on down.

Paul has invited Rebecca and Shy and the little princess to come park the Wonkebago in the woods. I think they were a little put off when Paul told them about the bears. ;-D

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Oh, I hadn’t thought about the animals. I guess I shall be visiting you in the wilds then. 😀

got a call from a cop in Bullhead City. he sent a picture of the license the guy used to forge that check a few weeks back. so, I sent my current license so that he can show that I’ve been victimized and they can arrest him and confiscate it.

        • Red Bird

You never know. Years ago someone forged some checks on my old checking account. They bought stuff in another city hours away from where I live. When I followed up on it, they were able to order a new set of checks with my real bank account number but with a different address. They also figured out how to forge my driver’s license with the fake address. Now I have everything monitored. TMI?

          • mancityRed6

I haven’t written a check in years. maybe I should just go savings account instead.
and yeah, I’m sure that’s how they did it to me.

I, for one, never knew that the man who kept the South part of America was also made of marble.

        • Resistance Fighter Astraea

          That explains a lot.

    • AJ Milne

      (Facepalm…)

The problem with the Confederate statues is they _rewrite_ the past, aggressively. Placed there in most cases _many_ decades after the fact as acts of deliberate revisionism and glorification of a slave state, as a reaction to progress in civil rights, and in the shadow of Jim Crow.

It is those who want to whitewash the past who want them still there. No one saying they should fall is saying, oh, let’s just forget about the Confederacy and about slavery. They’re saying: fuck glorifying it, which is all those statues do.

Shorter: this cartoonist has demonstrated, yet again: you can lie in his medium as well as any.

More slavery porn. Just what the world needs now.

      • Resistance Fighter Astraea

Do you know where to find that interview?

Since I was commuting at the time it must have been on NPR, but I’ve been driving at odd hours (and in odd places) this week, so I cannot for the life of me remember what time it was on (and thus what show).

One of the women really nailed it when she said that anyone who believes that the Confederacy was vanquished is blissfully unaware of the fact that people of color live with the aftermath of slavery every single day. There is no “safety” from that legacy.

As someone said, he hit drums like they had abused him as a child.

      • jesterpunk

I remember reading about when he first tried out for Nirvana, he had a pile of sawdust behind the drums from playing so hard.

      • Wookie Monster
      • Zippy W Pinhead

that’s the way my brother tends to play, though the truth is you eventually start to damage your hands or wrists if you don’t lighten up eventually.

        • Joe Beese

I remember reading about Max Weinberg suffering a hand problem during a concert in the middle of the Born in the U.S.A. tour. “I missed a beat,” he said to illustrate how bad it had been. (Which sounds like such a little thing, but I guess it would be very noticeable.)

So he went to a doctor who was uncertain of his prognosis: “The human hand is not built to do what you’re doing with it.”

          • Zippy W Pinhead

Beating the skins makes your drums sound better, but it’s not sustainable (if you’re in a garage or club band, you’re too loud for the stage and if you’re in an arena band you don’t need to hit that hard because everything is mic’d). Smart drummers learn to moderate the hard hitting, because it causes muscle tears, tendonitis and all sorts of other repetitive motion injuries- they save it for when they’re in front of an audience and learn the showmanship of appearing to beat the shit out of their kit without actually doing it. Hell, any musician suffers from hand and wrist problems from all the playing. I sat in with a band playing keyboards and Hammond B3 (another instrument you tend to get physical with) the other night and after 4 hours I could barely clench a fist.

      • (((Alt-Sedagive)))

His drumming for Killing Joke (for the album “Killing Joke”) was stupendous.

so the other night I had a purge kind of dream. I was somewhere, with a couple of guys, in a building on a second floor that was a balcony but had windows? huge crowd outside and there was something 20+ feet tall and bipedal. very weird.
woke up, went back to sleep.
I was with someone. I don’t think it was the ex, but it’s been a few days since I dreamt this. I was in a domicile (house or apartment, probably apartment due to it being more urban) and with a woman (!). there was pounding on the door, but she was only interested in what was on tv. I heard cries for help and went to look, classic mistake. I ended up on a truck trying to dodge someone with zombie makeup that had a piece of lumber on a chain, and someone else. I jumped and didn’t make the other truck, but went past it. I woke up right before I landed.

Very surprising and very welcomed. In a VERY rare moment of political and social commentary, after Turnip made his horrific lil’ speech, the Joint Chiefs issued a statement condemning racism, bigotry and hate in all forms, while not specifically mentioning Turnip, their CIC. Still, the timing was telling and the targets obvious.

[Inspired by Charlottesville, Military Chiefs Condemn Racism
By DAVE PHILIPPS AUG. 16, 2017
In an unusually public move, the nation’s top military leaders, who typically try to steer clear of social controversy, have come out strongly against racism and extremism in the wake of violent protests over the weekend.

Five of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, representing the Navy, the Marines, the Army, the Air Force and the National Guard, posted messages on social media condemning hatred and neo-Nazis, saying that the extremist violence in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday went against the military’s core values.]

I’ve always been in awe of this story.

On November 4 of that year he returned to the team’s popular radio show, but a tragic event overshadowed his comeback. Upon arriving at the NBC studio, Lou received word that his infant son, Lou Jr., had accidentally drowned in the family pool. During an afternoon nap, the baby worked loose one of the slats on his crib, climbed out and fell into the pool, unnoticed by the nanny. The baby (‘Little Butch’) was just two days short of his first birthday. Lou had asked his wife to keep Butch up that night so the boy could hear his father on the radio for the first time. Rather than cancel the broadcast, Lou said, “Wherever he is tonight, I want him to hear me,” and went on with the show. No one in the audience knew of the death until after the show when Bud Abbott explained the events of the day, and how the phrase “The show must go on” had been epitomized by Lou that night.

No, Mr. President. There were not many sides in Charlottesville. There were just two. Right and wrong. There were white supremacists on one side and Americans who believe all people are created equal on the other side. There were hate groups and there were Americans who oppose hate. There were neo-Nazis and… Do we really have to go beyond that? Isn’t that what we call a non-starter? There were Nazi’s you stupid piece of shit and still that wasn’t clear enough for you? Really? You couldn’t even get this one right? On one side there were Nazis and on the other there were no Nazis, and you still came down on the wrong side?

Gosh, I’d like to think my mother would have given a eulogy for me like that. But my mother would have died of a heart attack at hearing I’d been murdered, and then my father would have had to do it, and he’d have quoted from Shakespeare and Gandhi and Plato and Voltaire and everyone would have forgotten why they were there by the time he was done. Heather’s mom did a much better job, nobody could do better. Thanks, Heather’s Mom!

      • Angela Ruzzo

My dad was a great believer in the power of words. However, he also owned guns and was an NRA member before they went batshit crazy (then he canceled his membership), so there’s no telling. . . I once read a story about a really horrific rape case where the perp was about to walk out of court a free man and I asked my dad “What would have happened to a guy like that back in them olden days you like to talk about?” And he said “The woman’s father, brothers, uncles and cousins would all have gone out at 2 am and shot the bastard, and the police would have looked the other way, and the womenfolk would have cheered them on and rewarded them with fried chicken and apple pie and home-made ice cream.” I said “You wouldn’t want that to happen today, would you?” And he just looked sideways at me and rubbed his nose. So much for Voltaire.

“So what?” you’re saying. “It’s just the title to Voyager. What’s the big deal?” The big deal is that this isn’t the title sequence to the show. It’s a fan recreation of the sequence. And he did it

    IN 4K RESOLUTION

Which means this thing is way better quality than the original broadcast. Pop the window to full screen, and savor.

Came back from a long day. Work was draining … but …

One of the Shark kittehs needed some teeth extracted. Today was the day. The kitteh is fine, and the vet said he was the absolute best. Nice, purring, happy through the whole thing. Just fine.

Then I read Heather’s mom’s speech. I was returned to a time when as a parent, I signed the death certificate for one of my children. The pain of that loss, slightly dulled with time, came back. Then I read the speech again. The power of those words in the face of overwhelming loss galvanized my steel spine. I can face this, and I can make my contribution, however small, count.

So now with renewed anger, a healthy (but less toothy) kitteh, I swear I’ll not let some cheap ass, white trash nazi take anything from me or my family ever again.

Bannon has it right: your boss is a fucking nazi. Americans don’t like nazis. Americans don’t like callous, unfeeling, hate filled, greedy shitheads. Americans are now even LESS tolerant of your bullshit. More and more people are engaged and pissed off.

Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Strikes Again sucked in many, many ways. But the one that irritated me the most was when a Batcave function is triggered with the verbal command “Newmar Kitt Meriwether” (maybe in a different order).

I wouldn’t think it necessary to remind Frank Miller of this but there is no 1966 Batman TV show in the DC Universe.

      • Daredevil

Frank Miller was once a great writer on Batman and Daredevil. Then in the early 2000’s he became a fascist nutjob.

As I understand it, Dennis Miller’s downfall was when Rick Overton stopped writing for him.

      • Daredevil

BTW, DC currently publishes Batman 66′, a series of comics directly inspired by the Adam West series.

        • Joe Beese

Yes, it’s a good series too.

But if it had Adam West trigger a Batcave function with the code phrase “Frank Miller”, it would have the same problem.

          • Daredevil

In the animated movie Return of the Caped Crusaders, they sort of parody TDKR when a drug in Batman’s system makes him act more aggressively than usual (for West’s version, anyway) and he says “this is an operating table, and I’m the surgeon”.

Russia, people. It all goes back to Russia
Putin and his cabal have the same mentality as Bannon and Trump, they are homophobes, misogynists, racists, not to mention murderers (of journalists, other opposition). This makes Trump’s financial ties to Russia even more relevant.
There appear to be strong financial and ideological interests that unite Putin with Trump. How long ago has Russian ideology start to shape Trump’s view of the world? Or Bannon’s? No wonder the neo-nazis on both sides of the Atlantic see Putin as their natural leader.

The nightmare I had the night before last about fighting a terrifying but definitionless evil made me wake up with my heart pounding. I’m a lucid dreamer and I was afraid to go back to sleep but i did enough and the evil thing did not prevail, so there’s that.

They’ve all been condemning “racism” with words, but they never really went further than that.

Some of them have condemned Trump with words as well, but far fewer than those who condemned racism as a whole.

It’s still more or less not ok to condemn the leader of your party if you are of the Party of Trump.

I posted yesterday that this was self-respect time for his cabinet. No one with any self-respect could continue to stand there and support this asshole. And that goes for General Kelly as well. “Charlottesville spokeswoman Miriam I. Dickler told Moyer that only one permit was issued for Emancipation Park – the one received by white nationalists staging a “Unite the Right” rally. However, counterprotesters did not need permits to protest that rally, she said.

“Please bear in mind that people do not need a permit to enter a public park, even when another event is scheduled to take place there, nor are they required to have one to be on streets or sidewalks adjacent to or outside the park,” Dickler said in an email.”

Yeah, that and several other problems have pretty much destroyed population growth in Russia. Their population now is about the same as it was in 1926, under 150 million. he government acquired Arlington at a tax sale in 1864 for $26,800, equal to $410,000 today.[18] Mrs. Lee had not appeared in person but rather had sent an agent, attempting to pay the $92.07 in property taxes (equal to $1,400 today) assessed on the estate in a timely manner.[19] The government turned away her agent, refusing to accept the tendered payment. In 1874, Custis Lee, heir under his grandfather’s will passing the estate in trust to his mother, sued the United States claiming ownership of Arlington. On December 9, 1882, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5–4 in Lee’s favor in United States v. Lee, deciding that Arlington had been confiscated without due process.[19][20] After that decision, Congress returned the estate to him, and on March 3, 1883, Custis Lee sold it back to the government for $150,000 (equal to $3,271,364 in 2017) at a signing ceremony with Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln.[18][21] The land then became a military reservation.[22]

Agreed and he was against all monuments honoring the Confederacy if IIRC:

At the center of the “Unite the Right” rally that turned deadly in Charlottesville last weekend was a protest of the city’s plan to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee. White supremacists, neo-Nazis and others have made monuments to the Confederate commanding general a flashpoint — at times marching to keep them standing.

But Lee himself never wanted such monuments built.
“I think it wiser,” the retired military leader wrote about a proposed Gettysburg memorial in 1869, “…not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered.”

Trump’s Embrace of Racially Charged Past Puts Republicans in Crisis

President Trump’s embrace of the country’s racially charged past has thrown the Republican Party into crisis, dividing his core supporters who have urged him on from
the political leaders who fear that he is leading them down a politically perilous and shortsighted path.

The divisions played out in the starkly different responses across the party after Mr. Trump insisted that left-wing counterprotesters were as culpable as neo-Nazis and white supremacists for the bloodshed in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend. Much of the right was ecstatic as they watched their president fume against the “violent” left and declare that “very fine people” were being besmirched for their involvement in the right-wing demonstration.

Much of its political class, however, was in shock. Former Presidents George and George W. Bush issued a rare joint rebuke of Mr. Trump’s stance, saying hate should be rejected “in all forms.”

And among younger Republicans there was a sense that the damage would be profound and enduring.

“The last year and especially the last few days have basically erased 15 years of efforts by Republicans to diversify the party,” said David Holt, a 38-year-old Oklahoma state senator running for mayor of Oklahoma City. “If I tried to sell young people in general but specifically minority groups on the Republican Party today, I’d expect them to laugh me out of the room. How can you not be concerned when the country’s demographics are shifting away from where the Republican Party seems to

      • Angela Ruzzo

That can’t possible be right. How can one glass of good wine every day be harmful? My Italian relatives drank 3 or 4 glasses every day, at least, and they all lived past 80. I mean, how long do people want to live? So you live 10 years longer if you never drink wine, I personally would rather die 10 years sooner and enjoy myself. There’s a good chance that after 80 you will get dementia, and then you won’t remember if you drank wine or not that day, so what’s the point of living that long?

        • Carpe Vagenda

When I visited the family in Italy they watered the wine down some, which makes it a little easier to manage. Also too, they drink with meals.

I can only hope there were good people who were door guards ready to stop any nonsense from happening. The time has come for the Left to let the fools on the Right know that we will no longer suffer fools gladly and will take the appropriate actions.

      • Lefty Wright

I’m sure that no one there would have tolerated any disruption. And hopefully the cops learned to not ignore the Nazis this time.

I thought I should share some good news with everyone. I finally found a place that sells that red wine that Caymus makes and it’s really good. I’m having a glass of it right now. Very nice when its chilled. Goes well with dark chocolate. I would recommend it.

    • eggs ackly-wright

The last bottle of Caymus I saw in a wine shop was 89.00. Do you like Bordeaux chilled, too?

      • Red Bird

In this case, yes. But that’s probably because it’s in the 90’s outside.

What fresh new hell do we have to be on the lookout for, NYT link?

Ex-Trump Aides Hunt for Untapped Voters, and Proof of Fraud

With President Trump’s poll numbers slipping, a group of the president’s former campaign aides is beginning an effort to encourage new voters in parts of the country that supported him in the election, and to stop what they contend are illegal votes in Democratic areas.

The former aides are starting a group called Look Ahead America to identify
“disaffected” rural and working-class Americans who either do not vote or are not on the voter rolls, in order to register and mobilize them ahead of future elections, according to a prospectus being distributed to possible donors.

Look Ahead America also seeks to discourage or invalidate “fraudulent” votes by deploying poll watchers with cameras, and through what it called a forensic voter fraud investigation to identify “votes cast in the names of the deceased, by illegal immigrants or non-citizens,” according to the prospectus, which was shared with The New York Times.

Voter registration and voter suppression–together at last!

    • don’t kid yourself. The “registration” is supression also. That way they can legally, with the president’s permission, bother people about who they vote for.
States won’t give them data? Fine, they’ll do it the hard way

        • seems pretty darn content. Who’s a pretty kitty? You is!

          • Angela Ruzzo

His name was David Sam Pig Allen Horse. Don’t ask for an explanation, it would take too long, it has a lot to do with several fairy tales I was reading. Generally referred to as “Sam.” He was a sweetie, and he liked to catch crawdads in the creek in my backyard and show them off to us before he ate them, but he got run over by a car.

          • David Hollenshead

            Ouch. I keep ours inside.

          • Angela Ruzzo

I do too. But my mother didn’t believe in animals inside the house. I was lucky that she let me have a cat at all because she didn’t like pets, but all my cats went outside at night, and were only allowed inside during the day and NEVER on the furniture. As a result, they all ended up being run over. I had a regular cat cemetery in the back yard. When I grew up and got a cat I let it sit anywhere it liked except the kitchen counter and sleep with me and I kept it inside.

          • David Hollenshead

Ouch, but glad you now have a safe cat universe….

          • Angela Ruzzo

Yes, ouch, but my dad was a real trooper, he would drive around looking for the little corpse, then he’d scoop up whatever was left of it with a shovel and put it in a paper bag and bring it home in the back of his truck, and then he’d make a wooden box and we’d have a proper funeral, with flowers and music, and a large flat stone with kitty’s name painted on it. It was all very sad, but soon I would get a new kitten and be happy again.

          • Persistent Demme

            Good for you!

(Bows to hat). Very true. It’s not just cars, it’s also infectious diseases and feral cats and predators. There are coyotes where I live, they love cats. Add fleas and ticks to that list, and I don’t understand why anyone lets their kitty go outside.

  • Saw a trailer today for a new biopic about Winston Churchill starring Gary Oldman as Winston. Looks good. I teared up with all the Nazi fighting themes

    • alwayspunkindrublic

You mean noted right wing dickhead Gary Oldman?

      • Yes. He’s at least good at his primary job, unlike may other noted right wing dickhead actors

        • alwayspunkindrublic

Not questioning your taste or judging the film without seeing it, but it immediately makes my antennae go up. The cartoon version of Churchill has been appropriated by the right; they of course gloss over how complicated he was, but conservative + stood against Hitler = “one of us”. Infinitely ironic, esp. now that they are actually abetting Nazis these days.

          • The trailer showed the “We will fight them…” speech, it was GOOD

          • alwayspunkindrublic

Well, it’d be hard to fuck that one up…but I’d be curious to see if the take in general is “hero of the right”. Sorry, I’m in an exceedingly cynical mood this evening.

          • Unclear from a two minute trailer, but it looks like it’s going to focus on the WWII stuff and it’s being directed by Joe Wright. The trailer leaned more to “dude who kept Britian togther” tone

          • TEX Dept. of Space Tacos

yeah, India comes to mind whenever I think of churchhill (palestine and israel should too).

Yeah, he led his country through WWII – which is great – but it was a white country and he had no real love for ethnic folk, from what little I know.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

Well, like I mentioned above, he was a complicated man, in good ways and bad…super smart, a drunk, imperialist, brave, Brit to the core. But he never flinched when it came to Nazis…unlike today’s Republicans who profess to worship him.

Every Republican must sign a censure of the president

The Party of Lincoln will continue, if at all, with those who are willing to condemn their own president for embracing these groups and individuals. Any Republican not willing to sign on should be voted out. Period. It’s the only litmus test that matters.
