Donald Trump is the victim in all this.

Minutes ago, Donald Trump finally made a new statement about Charlottesville. It must have just killed him, but he choked out these words:

“Racism is evil,” Trump said in a statement from the White House. “And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Well that’s just … well it’s better than his first statement, that’s for sure. Steve Bannon must be losing it right now.

GOP senators have been racing to their Twitter accounts to see who can boldly go where Republicans seldom go, by stating succinctly that Nazis are bad, and Vice President Mike Pence even reluctantly admitted that “white supremacists” and “neo-Nazis” are to blame for the Charlottesville violence, but only when a reporter twisted his nipples and forced him to abandon his rhetoric about how “many sides” do it (but mostly the media).

Meanwhile, the Fox News kids have been Just Asking Questions that NO FUCKING SANE PERSON IS ASKING, about how it’s really the media’s fault, and the blacks, and so forth:

Oh golly, we don’t know! Should it NOT bother us that Donald Trump, the president who dogwhistled his way into office riding the coattails of literally deplorable racist Americans, and whose White House statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day somehow failed to mention JEWS, had a really fucking hard time saying that literal NAZI WHITE SUPREMACISTS did this? Because Trump sure doesn’t have a hard time naming names when something is really bothering him, whether that name is Hillary Clinton or Chuck Schumer or Fake News CNN or the Failing New York Times or the gold star Khan family or Mika Brzezinski’s bloody face or Megyn Kelly’s bloody wherevers or or or OR OR OR OR OR! That it took him until now to muster up a simple, “Nazis are bad mmkay?” is just a little bit weird and disturbing. Unless we’re just being HYSTERICAL, like we always are.

Because we hate ourselves, let’s click on the video Fox’s Howard Kurtz posted and see what … Oh Jesus …

KURTZ: By making Donald Trump the focus of this protest that turned utterly violent, a protest he had nothing to do with, aren’t some critics in the media also being divisive?

Poor Trump, being unfairly maligned by the evil liberal media!

Pundit Jessica Tarlov reminded Kurtz that this is NOT the same as wingnut complaints about how Barack Obama wouldn’t use the magic words “Radical Islamic Terrorism,” because while there are millions of moderate and nice and happy Muslims, there is no such thing as “moderate neo-Nazis,” therefore SHUT UP, HOWIE KURTZ.

Kurtz allowed that yes, it would have been better if Trump could have coughed out the words “white nationalists” at the outset, then added “BUT BUT BUT BARACK OBAMA RADICAL ‘SLAMIC TERRORISM,” because he apparently wasn’t paying attention seconds before, when Tarlov explained how this thing is different from that thing. Wingnut pundit Mollie Hemingway chimed in to say Trump’s original statement was very nice and loving, and then she listed a bunch of cities where there were also violent (black) rallies committed by the “fringe left” (black ones), just so Fox News viewers would understand that (black) hate is a problem on all sides (mostly the black sides though).

Well this is fun. Let’s look at another nice moment from Fox News, and no, we’re not talking about when Fox reporter Doug McElway was broadcasting live from the middle of the action and a Nazi yelled, “The fucking Jew lovers are gassing us, man!” and McElway’s only response to that was, “Pardon his French.”

Instead, we’ll visit the idiot couch on “Fox & Friends”!

GUY IN BRIAN KILMEADE’S SEAT WHO ISN’T BRIAN KILMEADE: Look for the press to keep PRESSING HIM no matter what, right? Because in their mind, nothing is ever good enough …

STEVE DOOCY: That’s what they’ll do!

NOT KILMEADE: … so they’ll keep pushing him.

LADY: Well that’ll be the first question, no doubt, Steve, out of the gate, at this press conference … but as you said, Pete, they have, it seems, like an open door to run with their narrative […] In their minds, a lot of them, they say we can associate the president with these groups, and that fits a lot of the narrative on the left, a lot of the media, and that is very problematic for society for us to even be talking like that!

OH HIS NAME IS PETE: Of course, because so much of the Left sees this world not through America First, but through racial identity politics first.

America First? Oh, hey, psst, Pete, if we may call you that, since apparently it is your name: You’re accidentally using Nazi codewords while talking about how the media is having a “narrative” that President Trump is a Nazi, whoops, oh well.

Meanwhile, it’s very problematic how the media drove its leftist racial identity politics narrative right into a crowd of people in Charlottesville, Virginia, this weekend, killing one and injuring many others. When will the liberals stop being THE REAL NAZIS all the time?

OK, that’s enough Fox News. Let’s all just be grateful how Donald Trump solved racism this afternoon, with his day-late, dollar-short statement, which was the literal least he could do.

“Racism is evil,” Trump said in a statement from the White House. “And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Oh dear, all the racist, Nazi Klan criminal thugs who voted for him won’t like that. He’ll need to make it clear to them that he thinks the SPLC, the ACLU, and Black Lives Matter are repugnant hate groups.

Without looking at any of the responses to this statement, I’ll be willing to bet the answer is going to be along the lines of, “They made him say that. He’s still on our side. He’s one of us.”

That he waited two days and the original statement was a wash has already cemented that narrative in their heads. In this case their narrative is right. He was likely pushed into a stronger statement. He is still one of them. He is the head of their side.

  • TundraGrifter

Pundit Jessica Tarlov reminded Kurtz that this is NOT the same as wingnut complaints about how Barack Obama wouldn’t use the magic words “Radical Islamic Terrorism…”

Here are some more good reasons. Using that phrase would get more Americans killed.

#1 – We need allies in our fight against terrorists. We can’t win this alone. We don’t need to alienate those we are working with.

#2 – It’s crazy to unite our enemy. Successful operations divide the opponent. Terrorists around the world operate for very, very different reasons.

#3 – Criminals don’t deserve the cloak of religion. They are murders and should be dealt with as such.

#4 – We don’t need to create more enemies by making this a religious war. That will, inevitably, cause some of those on the fence trying to decide what to do to go over to the other side.

Fox and the Right have always maintained it was out of sympathy for Radical Islamic Terrorism.

As sickened as I am by the racist asshole driving his car into a crowd of people, I still find myself questioning why liberals aren’t talking more about Antifa’s role in inciting violence at this rally of racist assholes. What exactly is Antifa’s endgame here? I saw video footage of people beating the shit out of each other, and I’m not sure how that is advancing our country in any way.
Would I prefer that Nazis went somewhere else, or simply didn’t exist at all? Absolutely. But I only see more death and destruction down the road if people show up at these racist rallies and try to quash hate speech with violence. I’m like anyone else, I guess, in not knowing whether just ignoring the racists and their little white pity parties is better than showing up and trying to shout them down – but these outright brawls seem only to serve to bolster their feelings of victimhood, and possibly draw more middle of the road people to their cause by pointing to the “violent leftists” trying to shut down their free speech.
Is there a simple answer? I doubt it. But I can’t imagine what happened in Charlottesville is it.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

To be fair, a lot of the left is talking about how counterproductive they are- just not publicly, so as not to give ammunition to the bothsiders

      • clubseal

I understand that, as well as the desire to not be seen as victim blaming, which I’m not doing. I just hate to think where this is all going.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

I agree that they are quite problematic- more of the left learning the wrong lessons and imitating the worst traits of the right. I’d love to see the Venn diagram of Antifa and the Bros™

          • weejee

We had some Antifas with Tonya Tappers™ here in Seattle who were looking to show the Alt-Righters what for at the permitted. Some of the Anarchists are okay with violence as well. I’m not going to get all sad for them if a couple of those blokes get arrested.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

I’m just curious how much overlap there is between the two groups. Are they the same peeps? The anarchists usually dress in all black and tend to incite trouble at globalist events like G20. Are they the same ones taking on the white supremacists or are they different groups?

          • NastyBossetti

Based on the people I’ve known who engaged in black bloc protesting, I would say there is a lot of overlap between the two, but there are some people who only care about one thing or the other.

          • Maggielle

I had a friend who was very active in the Vietnam anti-war demonstrations and protests. He told me that they had to be very organized because there would always be a smallish faction of SDS or self-styled anarchists who’d show up to “heighten the contradictions”. The organizers tried to deal with it through sheer numbers: people would surround those groups and just kind of block them, or mislead them onto a street where shit wasn’t happening. Those Black Bloc people make me mad but we’re just going to have to deal with them somehow.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

I remember those days- the SDS always managed to just make things worse and ruin the message with their tactics

          • Maggielle

And now there’s twitter and flash mobs, which makes it harder to counter them with numbers and organization.

    • Snopes Shop

It kind of pales in the face of nazis.

        • grindstone

The argument that “you have the right to your opinion and I’ll fight to the death to preserve your right to express it.” Spouse and I had the same discussion you’ve brought up here. He felt that they should have been left to march and ignored. I’m afraid it crossed a line with me. I don’t think I need to preserve anyone’s right to be a Nazi.

          • clubseal

The preeminent question for anyone in a free society – what do you with the people whose views are repugnant? I don’t trust the government to outlaw certain views, for fear of what that power means, but like any rational person I also don’t want Nazis here. And it’s not like someone who believes Nazism is a logical path is within the realm of reason.

          • grindstone

That is the question. And technically, they can think what they want to think. A racist can be a racist. Someone who believes they are part of the master race can believe that all they want. We don’t want the thought police (or blasphemy laws or the sort). But does arming yourself and marching through the streets not cross those lines? Those are actions, and they are designed to create fear and intimidation.

          • clubseal

I don’t know if they cross the line or not – at least in the legal sense. Morally, sure. Do I understand why people reacted the way they did? Yes. I clearly don’t have the answer for society as a whole, but I know how I feel about it personally.

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

We’re aware, but it’s like the “anarchists” who show up at all lefty protests, then smash a whole bunch of windows and run. We have no control over or association with them, and we don’t encourage their activities or make excuses for them when they do.

      • clubseal

I definitely don’t think “the left” needs to assume responsibility for them, but I would like to see the discussion about what to do with the issue – given that the public perception is that they somehow espouse liberal views.

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

The answer is, not much beyond saying they’re not us and barring them from our groups and politics. Which is what we do already. We can’t forcibly eject them or plan for them, since they pop in and out when they please.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

saying they’re not us and barring them from our groups and politics

We may need to say and do that more loudly and publicly, because the simpletons in the MSM have a nasty habit of seeing everything in black and white and dumbing it down to the point that it becomes “violent lefties and violent righties clash”

          • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

The problem is there’s no one person or group that speaks for the left loud enough for whatabout-ers to hear.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

That may be the first thing we need to address

        • cmd resistor

True, it takes just a few of them doing stupid things and the wingnuts blame all liberals. And it seems really hard to get a sense of how many there really are and how disruptive they are from the media. But the many peaceful protesters are then just ignored. Is it correct that there were more anti-Nazi protesters than Nazis? I don’t have an answer, either. I remember organizing some small peaceful protests years ago and hoping that crazies didn’t show up and hijack us.

          • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

From my experience with them, largely black protests are similar if you swap out “crazies” with “Jessie Jackson/Al Sharpton”. They’re each like a one-man delegitimization brigade.

          • cmd resistor

There are also days when I am wearing the tin-foil hat that I wonder if the disrupters are part of the RWNJ group trying to cause trouble. I just don’t get the “burn it all down for the hell of it” thing.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

            look what happened to OWS

    • SomeBigRedDog

I just assumed they were the same people as the black bloc assholes who have been fucking up protests since the WTO riots in Seattle in ’99.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

That’s a great question- who exactly are they? Because most progressives I know would never dream of putting on the old bike helmet and grabbing a chain and lock or baseball bat to go rumble with right wingers

        • SomeBigRedDog

You can barely have a protest in Seattle or Portland anymore without some assholes in masks trying to bust up a Starbucks. I don’t know, maybe they just really hate coffee.

          • therblig
          • Zippy W Pinhead

I know all about the black bloc- and worse yet, how the left always gets lumped in with those assholes when they decide to break things and burn stuff down. My question is- is Antifa just them? Or is it its own entity?

          • Major_Major_Major

Honestly, there is a ton of overlap in that Venn diagram. They are more than ready to exchange pleasantries with the Nazi’s

Maybe not all in one place, but I’ll bet there were at least 20 deaths on Saturday. And I would posit that, given human nature, out of all the people that did die on Saturday, at least 20 deaths involved an element of racism.

And? They start beating the shit out of each other, and it gets hard to tell them apart.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

That’s the problem- there seem to be some who are way too eager to go straight to cracking skulls. It’s as if they’re just as addicted to the mindless violence as the RWNJs they are battling

          • clubseal

I’m probably not a great participant in this discussion – even though I have the questions – because I straight up abhor violence. I mean, I love watching hockey, and have always loved stupid, violent Chuck Norris and Schwarzenegger movies, but real life violence makes me sick. Go figure.

    • The easy thing to do is to start cracking Nazi skulls and I can understand the desire to do so.

The next best thing to no one showing up (including the media) to the Nazi circle jerk would be for tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people to show up in peaceful protest. Non-violence must always be the preferred path, people.

      • clubseal

That’s the hard part, I guess. It’s not like Nazis inspire peaceful feelings, especially when you get tons of people in one place, angry about everything. I guess in all, I’m just really concerned that this is only the beginning.

    • LesBontemps

Mock them. Mock them relentlessly. Show up with signs saying “I See Why You Can’t Get A Date,” “Hot Chicks Don’t Fuck Racists,” and “Sorry About Your Penis.” Dress up in clown costumes and march as the Ku Klux Klowns. Follow them down the streets with tubas and sousaphones playing goofy music and making fart noises. Point and laugh.

    • Gigglesnort

You can argue about antifa tactics. I can certainly see that some people watch Nazis parading with weapons intimidating people (and sometimes actually hurting them) and want to show up with a few weapons of their own. But the big picture is that Nazis are not just about putting on rallies, and the struggle that is going on is not just about who does what at those rallies. One side wants to suppress the rights of non-Whites, as well as a whole bunch of other people (LGBTQ for example). That is a BFD and that is what antifa (and a lot of people less violent) are pushing back against.

      • clubseal

I’m not questioning why people hate Nazis. But I fail to see the efficacy of playing into their victimhood by bringing violence to a rally that is – whether you agree it should be or not – within their constitutional rights to have. Maybe that’s where the discussion needs to go: Should we change the laws so that certain views are not permitted? I wonder if that’s where it’s going.

        • clubseal

The whole thing is difficult to get a handle on for me, at any rate. It’s not like I’d be sad if the violence did scare them off.

        • NastyBossetti

Violence was brought to the rally by the people showing up in tactical gear with automatic weapons. Do I think more violence is the answer? No, but I don’t think it’s fair to say that antifa folks brought the violence in this case. It was there, and it was brought by the people carrying torches in the street, by the people carrying shields and wearing helmets. They meant to intimidate people with the threat of violence.

    • SisterArtemis

The best response to bad speech is more speech.

I agree, knocking Nazi heads is appealing, but not an effective strategy for anything but immediate self defense. And smashing up property just keeps the Starbucks workers (or whoever) from earning tips (their living) and getting their work done. And “converts” very few people to the cause.

Now he wants to claim he speaks for us? NOPE. So FOX can kiss my ass for giving that fraud a national forum.

    • Christopher Story

I noticed that today too. The “both sides do it” cliche really means that:
Feeding a child with tax dollars is the same as abortion
Putting a black man through college is just as awful as lynching him
Putting a woman in a board room is just as disgusting as putting her in a burka.

      • Cat Cafe for the Prosecution

        It’s even clearer:
Alt-right: Death or oppression to blacks, Jews, foreigners, and ladies!
        “Alt-left”: No death or oppression
        EXACTLY THE SAME.

    • JustDon’tSayDignity

I’m done with whole fucking “alt-right” euphemism. It’s “Nazi” or “white supremicist”. No more hiding behind coy nicknames, motherfuckers!

  • Blackest Noobs

“Racism is evil,” Trump said in a statement from the White House. “And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Too fucking little, and DEFINITELY TOO FUCKING LATE, asshole.

this is the shit you say the moment you knew. and you failed fucking miserably. If people were waiting for you to pivot “presidential,” they’re gonna have wait a long fucking time cuz it aint fucking happening, you dumbfucking (most likely white) people.

  • Jennifer R
    • cmd resistor

      Interesting.

    • Sean McLaren

I kinda wondered. The kkk/neo-nazi/ws came looking for a fight, and the police were clearly staying back. I know a lot of people aren’t a fan of the “punch a nazi” thing, but it might have been worse without antifa.

      • jowgajen

They came to accept the dare the Nazis threw down. We are lucky it wasn’t much more violent.

        • Jennifer R

The nazis were looking for a fight and were heading to the church Dr West was speaking at.
White supremacists kinda have this thing about educated black men you see.

        • Sean McLaren

and that’s where I think it’s hard to say. Antifa/black bloc doesn’t have the greatest reputation in the world, and they’re definitely down for a street brawl, I’m just wondering if the Nazi side would have just peaceably marched around and left the counter protesters alone if antifa hadn’t been there.

          • Jennifer R

This wasn’t counter protesters out in the street. Dr West was speaking at a church and the nazis were heading over.

          • jowgajen

Bullies tend to take advantage of opportunities for risk-free violence against others.

          • jesterpunk

They brought people from the alt-right who are “famous” for hitting liberals with things and beating up liberals. So it might have been worse without anyone else there.

          • cmd resistor

I did see this black guy on TV this morning who had been beat up. He had 8 staples in his head, visible injuries, and I think a broken wrist. He was describing how another anti-Nazi had stayed with him till he could get help. My sense from the news reports is there were some skirmishes but that the major injuries were from the car guy. But this guy was pretty messed up. I think he said he was beaten with some kind of wood. – stick, or something.

          • NastyBossetti

It might have been this guy, who was beaten with their stupid racist flagpoles in a parking garage entrance?

          • cmd resistor

Yes, that was him. I have yet to see anything in a regular print story that even mentions him.
So in the story he said he and his friends had exchanged words with the Nazis before this group started beating the crap out of him. So I guess it is a both sides thing, right? And of course if someone hadn’t gotten that photo no one would even have believed him.

          • jesterpunk

Second, he uses this exact divisive rhetoric ALL the fucking time.

Third, the fact that the media is making an actual fucking correlation between his words and the corresponding violence isn’t a sign of divisiveness… it’s a sign of shit having REAL AND ACTUAL CONSEQUENCES.

    When the President Is Un-American

In short, these days we have a president who is really, truly, deeply un-American, someone who doesn’t share the values and ideals that made this country special.

In fact, he’s so deeply alienated from the American idea that he can’t even bring himself to fake it. We all know that Trump feels comfortable with white supremacists, but it’s amazing that he won’t even give them a light tap on the wrist. We all know that Putin is Trump’s kind of guy, but it’s remarkable that Trump won’t even pretend to be outraged at Putin’s meddling with our election.

Just as there are softball questions, there are softball “situations”, where a simple, standard response is all that is needed. “Our condolences to the families of the victims” or “Congratulations to the winners on their outstanding achievement”, for example. Anyone, in politics or not, ought to be able to give a standard comment in such a situation.

Condemning the racism on display in Charlottesville is a T-Ball situation – and Trump struck out.

    • You’re right. The Ol’ Pussy Grabber didn’t strike out, though. He sent the message he wanted to send, and only after it was sent, did he say what he was supposed to, which sent another message that he wanted to send. You get no points of any kind for condemning neo-Nazi Klan-types when you are a racist anti-Semite droplet of sweat dripping off of Steve Bannon’s ass and the message was pulled like from your ass like the doc pulls a cucumber lodged in your rectum.

“Are media overly focused on Trump not citing white nationalists?”

If Trump had condemned them by name on day fucking 1, we still wouldn’t be talking about it. Nor would the WH had been fumbling to give an answer – nor we would be talking about the WH fumbling for answer they should have had on day 1.

Don’t they PAY people TAX MONEY to do handle this shit?

Because in their mind, nothing is ever good enough …

Wow, that sounds a lot like the Obama years and the right, a ton “journalists”, Republicans, etc etc.

I just came from a rally in Washington Heights(NYC) and this kid has the right idea… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f2537df3a9668861d7c186b5e5d30de70435da383b2a1af4e7660bc04a15ba34.jpg

It was my first political gathering ever, anxiety makes it hard for me to participate like I really want, I’m so glad I went, it’s not so scary and I’m ready to be more involved. Great speeches by NY AG Eric Schneiderman, Congressman Adriano Espaillat and NYC Public Advocate Tish James.

If you haven’t watched John Oliver’s takedown of Trump’s response, he nailed it.

And back in the day, when they were all coming in legally, the one true real type of American, the white white white Anglo-Saxon Protestant kind, even then could not stand migrants, no matter if they WERE both legal and white, because they were Irish and Italian and Polish and even worse in some instances, like from places that — if you were ignorant enough — you had never even heard of. Which I am not even remotely the first person to declare online. All Wonkette except trolling deplorable visitors thinks this anyway, but I tried saying it on the President Trump Channel and was banned in short order. Even though I didn’t use obscenities and wasn’t rude to anybody. That was so unexpected.
    Being ignorant clearly helps.

Nothing to do with tRump? Really? Funny, but that’s not how infamous Nazi douchenozzle David Duke feels about it. Here’s what he said at the rally:

“This represents a turning point for the people of this country. We are determined to take our country back. We are going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump. That’s what we believed in. That’s why we voted for Donald Trump, because he said he’s going to take our country back.”

  • I am always amused at the tone deafness of people who condemn identity politics without realizing the politics, especially conservative politics, is strictly white-identity politics. Seriously, who can be that unaware?

    • CafeenMan

The right wing base. The right wing “leadership” mostly knows what they’re doing. I say mostly because now they have people like Gohmert who probably are that clueless.

But the rest of the GOP “leadership” knows that if they can keep their base riled up then there’s less focus on what they’re doing.

      • People who are afraid, vote conservative. Science fact.

  • Celtic_Gnome

Thank you for going where I sure as hell have never and will never go.

  • CafeenMan

I’m not saying this is the cause, I’m only asking, did this happen because Obama chose not to be a white American when he was conceived. It’s important that these questions are asked.

    • Lynn Witherington

I know! He decided to be black. But what kind of black is that

      • Lynn Witherington

You can’t even make jokes about him. Just jeer at him for being “all about words!” Thinks he’s so dignified. Or something.

  • SayItWithWookies

Kurtz’s panel somehow never asked why it might be important for Trump to condemn the Nazis and Klansmen — the essential part of which is, “If your base commits an illegal act, are you going to hold them to the same standard everyone else is expected to adhere to?” And Trump’s answer is clearly no. His supporters get a pass. White supremacists have leniency under Trump because they voted for him. This is what he told them, and this is exactly the message they heard and understood.

Trump has not only ignored the egregious Nazi and other-forms-of-racist supporters of his — he’s encouraged them. He’s said this is fine. But Kurtz somehow misses this obvious point.

The Orange Overlord is watching, after all.

  • Seriously, these people are evil enemies of America. Not even some dying can break their effin’ trance.
