Some people are just really bad at drawing. Oh, and thinking.

Since Charlottesville, Virginia attracted the nation’s Deleted Commenters to one place, today, we’ll be bringing you a compendium of idiots offering their insights on the weekend’s events.

Nazis? Were there Nazis? We guess we don’t like Nazis.

Let’s start with the staff of the ShitFerBrains in Chief: An unidentified White House spokesperson released a statement this morning “clarifying” that Donald Trump doesn’t need to call out white supremacists, because you see, he already condemned “hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides,” and what part of “condemns all” hatred don’t you understand?

So there’s your very specific condemnation. Jesus, are you people dense or what? Nicely done! It covers the “why no condemnation?” angle and allows white supremacists to say it was obviously released as cover by one of the cucks in the WH, but Trump remains on their side.

It seems the White House is still getting their ducks in a row on this, however; reporter Gabriel Sherman found someone in the White House who wanted to make clear the counter-protesters probably murdered some people, too:

Update: Hey, Fox News is pretending Trump actually condemned white supremacists, based on that “clarification”:

White Power Rangers Declare Flawless Victory

For some real insight into who was happy about yesterday’s violence, let’s check in with the geniuses at neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer, where they’re celebrating their “victory” after police shut down Saturday’s planned “Unite the Right” rally. Because, you see, the white supremacist message is so obviously true that the Powers That Be had to silence it:

Daily Stormer editor Andrew Anglin heard Donald Trump’s message loud and clear yesterday. You’d almost get the impression that Trump’s speechwriters knew exactly who they were talking to, huh?

Anglin closed out his liveblog last night by urging his buds to chug some milk and enjoy the fruits of their “victory”:

Car attack? What car attack?

Anglin also had many thoughts on the murder committed when an Ohio man smashed his car into a crowd of people protesting the demonstration. Before the suspect was identified, Anglin decided that obviously the attack had been a matter of self-defense, since, he claimed, the Dodge Challenger’s windshield was already broken in the video (based on a still showing the car backing up after the attack — no comment on the flat tire…).

As with a lot of the stuff on Daily Stormer, it’s difficult to say whether Anglin believes a word of it, or expects his readers to. The “Street Sweeper” meme clearly suggests he thinks the murder was hilarious. The post goes on to mourn the damage to the car: “It was a very nice car, worth much more than the life of whoever died.” He also insists,

Nice guy. It’s anyone’s guess whether Anglin or the video maker (video here) seriously expects anyone to believe the Challenger’s windshield was broken before the attack. For what little it’s worth, the video doesn’t really show the windshield prior to the attack — the cellphone video was shot in a panic as the car thundered by. Here’s the best frame we could get, literally from the first second of the video; the angle doesn’t allow any view of the windshield at all:

Oh, and what a surprise — the shot of the car that had obviously already been damaged by brick-throwing antifa terrorists was carefully selected — here it is an instant later:

Those were some bigass bricks.

We know we shouldn’t even give these morons the legitimacy of debunking them, but we’re genuinely curious about how their minds work — does Anglin think he’s convincing anyone, perhaps just throwing shit at the wall and hoping one or two of his readers will take to Twitter to insist the car had been attacked first? Apparently, that actually is getting some mileage; more than one idiot on Twitter has posted another video making the claim; it’s slowed down to show demonstrators attacking the car with a baseball bat — after it had crashed into the crowd and two other vehicles. Not gonna embed; it’s got gory shots of the aftermath of the attack. Somehow, we don’t think “I was defending myself from the people hitting my car after I plowed into them” is going to fly in court.

Once the police announced they’d arrested 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr. and charged him with second-degree murder, The Daily Stormer had a new angle on the attack: The guy couldn’t have been a rightwinger because he’s probably Jewish. His mother’s last name, after all, is “Bloom.”

Time Out For Someone Who Actually Matters: Heather Heyer

Fuck the Nazi noise, let’s take a moment to focus on Heather Heyer, the woman who died in the car attack: she was a 32-year-old paralegal from Virginia whose last public message on Facebook, posted not long after Donald Trump was elected last year, was “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.” A GoFundMe page set up to help her family has already come close to doubling its $50,000 goal. Her mother is quoted as saying, “She died doing what was right. My heart is broken, but I am forever proud of her.” So say we all.

Nazis Have Never Heard Of This Nazi

No doubt the Nazis will start claiming that photos of James Fields carrying a shield with the logo of white supremacist group Vanguard America were photoshopped.

The brave Aryans of Vanguard America insist Fields wasn’t a member — which is entirely possible; why bother formally signing up? — but for some reason didn’t seem to want to be associated with his act of resistance to the Violent Left:

“The driver of the vehicle that hit counter protesters today was, in no way, a member of Vanguard America. All our members had been safely evacuated by the time of the incident,” the group posted on Twitter.

“The shields seen do not denote membership, nor does the white shirt. The shields were freely handed out to anyone in attendance.

“All our members are safe and accounted for, with no arrests or charges,” the group added.

Dead Breitbart Can’t Believe Media Keeps Focusing On Nazis

Over at Dead Breitbart’s Home For Angry White People Who Aren’t Racist Heavens No, we learn that Both Sides Are To Blame, because just look at the violence on this sign:

You see, what’s really a shame about Charlottesville is that what was supposed to be a “protest in favour of free speech” somehow got invaded by a bunch of neo-Nazis (who kind of organized the thing, but let us not nitpick) by “some of the rally’s attendees.” The real tragedy, though, is that “While many media minutes and deliberations will be afforded to the fascistic right, almost none will be dedicated to the fascistic left.”

Also, shockingly, Gov. Terry McAuliffe told ALL the good conservatives to go home, which was truly a missed opportunity:

Instead of a call for dialogue, or even trying to explain what would be a totally reasonable and easily-made argument against flying Nazi flags or torch-lit demonstrations, he chose to further drive a wedge, as did those who flanked him on stage.

Even worse, McAuliffe refused — four times! — to condemn the violent antifa (anti-fascist) demonstrators:

I asked Gov. McAuliffe four times tonight to condemn in equal measure the violence of antiFa. I didn’t want him to rescind criticism of the alt right. I didn’t expect him to be nuanced. But I did think — perhaps foolishly — that he might want to distance himself from violent tactics on both sides. I supposed wrong.

Such a sad day for even-handed condemnation of both Nazis and those hit by their cars.

Random Idiots In The News

CNN’s Brian Stelter has collected some real winners, too, like this Fox News reporter apologizing to viewers for the wrong offensive thing:

Punchy-faced Richard Spencer had thoughts about all the Police Brutality, against him. We had to include the top reply, too:

Rightwing radio talker Mark Simone couldn’t figure out why anyone would associate shite supremacy with Trump. Must be the media! Also, real white supremacists hate Trump, you know, so ignore the Daily Stormer.

Well, maybe David Duke was a trifle miffed that Donald Trump didn’t stand up enough for white people:

Thank God Somebody Knows What Really Happened

Alex Jones knows what’s up: George Soros is behind all of this, so the government can declare Martial Law and ban all conservative speech. DUH:

FALSE FLAG! And the guy with the car simply “flipped out” (that’s from around 11:40) because the police forced the peaceful alt-right demonstrators onto a street full of violent leftists. Glad we got that cleared up.

Update: This is going big on the Twitternets just now. Looks like we understood some stuff in 1943 that we still need to be reminded of today, huh?

It’s an excerpt from a longer US War Department film, “Don’t Be A Sucker,” re-released in 1946/1947. Featured Lloyd Nolan — yep, Updated Update: who was an entirely different actor from Norman Lloyd, who played St. Elsewhere’s kindly old Dr. Auschlander, and boy do I feel silly for mixing them up. Now, about all these Nazis marching in Charlotte’s Web…

Governor states police estimate that 80% of white nationalists were armed, some with semi automatic rifles. “Let’s face it, they came here to hurt people”. He makes the point that rally should have been held in area not on city streets.

IANAL, but I think once you add guns to a free-speech rally, you nullify your first-amendent rights, as you are not “speaking,” but threatening.
I know, for the ACLU, they may have a different take. But I think they messed up (and I’m a member).

      • Agreed. Free speech is great! But one does not need to allow extremist groups (called by the president!!!!) to hold any rallies.

Nazis get over-wrought about the name Bloom.

    • My family name is Blum, the German cognate of Anglo “Bloom”. But while for an Englishman it meant that one of his ancestors was an iron worker (the little splatters of liquid iron on the wall instantaneously freeze into a miniature “flower”), but it means that one of mine was likely a florist.

I suggest the proper response to an alt-right (“ain’t right” would be a better term) rally is to do nothing. Ignore the fools.

Folks who parade in KKK hoods or neo-Nazi uniforms or prance around with guns are seeking attention. They need it like our President craves it.

So why give them what they want? Don’t confront. Shun.

    • Silence can be interpreted as approval. This is how social injustice is maintained.

      • TundraGrifter

Silence can be interpreted as wisdom. If you have a child throwing a tantrum, the best bet is to ignore it. It’s no fun if it doesn’t garner attention.

        • That child isn’t trying to intimidate disadvantaged populations, expecting others to be complicit in the intimidation.

          • TundraGrifter

Not participating isn’t being “complicit.” Ignoring a fool isn’t being intimidated.

Shunning coupled with shaming may be more effective. Don’t give them no attention, because that’s how people get the false notion of “it’s over”. Also, too, I think we, and the media, should give the absolute minimum attention to the alt-wrongers. Like trolls, they feed and grow stronger every time a talking head puts up video of their “‘protests” or goes on & on about how they are gaining strength. Like the Orange Menace, they’re attention whores. There’s a “Don’t feed the trolls” rule for good reason.

It could be culture specific. Eights are lucky in many Asian countries. Korea wanted the ’88 Olympics, and there is a chain of “pan-asian” restaurants in my town called August 8th. Sevens figure in some cultures, like a seventh son of a seventh son. It might be numerical, 2^3*3^2 (2 cubed is eight and 3 squared is nine, multiplied to equal 72). The idea that numbers have power existed in many cultures. Or maybe Mohammad thought the number 72 looked really cool in Arabic.

This woman died trying to stop brownshirts from “taking over the country.” This is why when people say “oh, why aren’t there more people getting out there and organizing” all you have to do is point them to this. Weimar 2.0, the last one didn’t end pretty either. No thanks. I don’t want to even leave my house anymore. Heck, I just spent half an hour on YouTube arguing with a moron who thinks “Kim Just In” Trudeau is an ally of North Korea who “takes orders from Barack Obama,” and that he “sabotaged” Trump by giving Whoa Fat Duck Dong a head’s up. The negotiation for the prisoner release was a ruse; either there was no prisoner in the first place, or he was going to be released anyway due to ill health (yeah, like North Korea would do that). Another one believes Canada is Sharia-compliant and that “real Canadians in the small towns and suburbs” need to “wise up and rise up.”

No amount of factual evidence or logical rebuttals of their conspiracy theories about Soros (drink!), the Muslim Brotherhood, and Pierre raising the children to be “young pioneers” giving aide to their fellow comrades will convince these people. Not even pointing out that there is no fucking way a country can be “Sharia-compliant” if you can still buy Molson and bacon on your way home from a Pride parade that a feminist world leader, his uncovered wife who is not 12, and his daughter who isn’t disallowed from going to school the next day, just marched in as well. They’re the same type to rant about vaccines, yet apparently, they’re inoculated against reality by a form of “herd immunity.”

Now you’ve got these lunatic hatemongers in Ole Virginny who think an innocent young woman being run over by a Nazi in a muscle car is another false flag, because his mother’s maiden name is Bloom and therefore he must be a (((Bloomberg))). They’ll even rationalize celebrating the death of a white girl at the hands of someone they’re convinced is Jewish, because “she probably voted Hillary and/or was a race traitor anyway.”

The more physically adept of them, however, have probably infiltrated the forces (or are naturally attracted to careers where they get to throw their authoritah around) already. All he needs is for one person of minority status to snap and not be able to take it anymore. Or a real “false flag” by one of these stealth skinheads putting on a keffiyeh and pretending to be Muslim when he does his own version of Sandy Hook or the Paris truck attack. Heck, the Pulse massacre created a wedge that he exploited to get at least a few LGBT voters in his corner. Trump’s brand is crisis, and he has a pyromania fetish. It’s kind of a funny thing. I live in a fairly typical rural Ontario town, far enough away from a city that we don’t have commuters (yet.) Yeah, there’s some bigotry here. Mostly from people on government assistance who enjoy airing their ignorance after they’ve had a couple of beers.
But there’s a Jamaican family in town. At least one Hindu family. I think some Muslims. (If they live on a farm I only get to see them in the grocery stores.) There’s UCC and Anglicans and Presbyterians and Catholics and Baptists and Pentacostals and I believe some Mennonites. There’s several atheists and one animist. And maybe more – I don’t get to the south side of town very often.
And we’re not gonna rise up. Neighbours are neighbours, and only the most brain-damaged would take marching orders from a bunch of fucking American Nazis. And there really aren’t enough of them to be more than a nuisance for the OPP.
Only the terminally stupid think that the country isn’t better off with people from all over being part of it. And we try not to allow the terminally stupid to make policy.

        Violence is not fun.

        • doktorzoom

A couple more thoughts on the theme: Resistance is absolutely necessary. Violent resistance is not the answer — it gives the deplorables what they think is “justification” for their own violence. Just look at the morons claiming that the driver of the Dodge was “defending himself” by backing up at high speed over the guy who smashed his rear window with a bat.

MLK and Gandhi had this shit figured out a long time ago.

          • Three Finger Salute

But look what happened to them. They lost in the face of violence. They didn’t win the war or the peace, because there never was a peace and never will be. India is run by a power-mad, genocidal nationalist and MLK Day has been reduced to a shopping holiday where black people get accused of stealing from stores despite having nothing on their person — and in all too many cases shot for it, by trigger-happy, racist cops who get no consequences for playing judge, jury and especially executioner. John Lennon wanted peace. He got crucified, just like he predicted in his song, and America ended up going into another Vietnam.

I’m not condoning violence Dok, I’m just extremely pessimistic that any forward progress is going to be made. It seems human nature is “defective by design” and assholery, particularly violent assholery and zero-sum conquest, is “a feature, not a bug.” You can’t bring a pen to a sword fight. But even if you bring a pen, you’ll get stabbed with that too — right in the throat, so that you can’t speak your dissent either. Look what happened to a black immigrant about 15 years ago who was stopped by the cops for no reason, and tried to take out his wallet for identification purposes. He got shot 41 times by the NYPD who “thought he had a gun,” and Springsteen got booed at a concert as a cop-hating, commie race traitor for singing a protest song about it. (He was booed, too. They weren’t shouting “Bruuuuuce.”)

We can’t have nice things because America’s not a nice country, and the people in power anywhere are rarely ever nice. If they were nice, they wouldn’t be in power. People like Obama and Trudeau are such rare exceptions as to disappear in a rounding error. What do they get in return? Shit flung at them for being cucks and sellouts, any number of anti-gay slurs, and in Obama’s case racial ones. Obama had to be careful not to get too tough, lest he become the fifth presidential casualty in U.S. history (or seventh, as some historians believe Taylor and Harding were poisoned), but I’m sure there were times he wanted to say “fuck it, we’ll do it live.”

Trudeau by his nature is practically Mister Rogers and can’t be anything else, not that he even wants to. Even the boxing match was a charity event. He’s an all-around good guy who doesn’t pick fights with anybody. Unfortunately, the ones in charge right now — and the ones who put them there — are the kind of people who are indeed so deplorable that they’d even pick on someone with the temperament of a PBS kids’ host. They insult his mother, they call him names and they even wish him dead.

Some MRA prick who has a blog or a YouTube channel wrote a book about 10 years ago called Assholes Finish First. A counterpoint to the old saying (and Green Day song) “nice guys finish last.” Americans consistently regard Jimmy Carter as one of the worst presidents in history. Even today, he’s thought of as a pandering pansy and a cuck. Why? Because he’s nice. He was last seen building houses in friendly Canada, for homeless and poor people and refugees. #1 is almost always Reagan. Trump will probably be “#2” no matter what, depending on how you look at it. Republicans will rank him as the second coming (pun intended) of Reagan. Democrats will say he’s shit. Trump will say he’s the shit. That should explain a lot right there.

TL;DR — I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

          • (((fka_donnie_d)))

I’m not going to take a position on violence, but your position entails giving a fuck what Republicans think. If republicans didn’t think certain things, they wouldn’t be republicans. Worrying about “what they think” is a great shortcut to some heavy drinking.

Google “internal locus of control” and have a nice cup of tea.

          • doktorzoom

All true enough; I have no illusions about the ability of assholes to shoot the MLKs and the Gandhis. But I have to believe the Civil Rights movement got a lot farther by adopting King’s nonviolence than it ever would have through, say, armed resistance, which would have gotten King shot a hell of a lot sooner, and with no gains to speak of. He was absolutely clear-eyed about the personal dangers of nonviolence as a strategy, but managed to mobilize millions.

But you’re also right: King got shot and the movement fell apart. I won’t pretend I have the answers, but I honestly can’t see how violence makes anything better in the long run. Hitler had to be stopped, and by the time he solidified power, war was the only way to stop him… but we also got Dresden, Hiroshima, and the Red Army literally raping its way across Eastern Europe.

On the other hand, somewhere in the multiverse, I’d like to think there’s an Earth where the U.S. joined the League of Nations, the Versailles agreement didn’t bankrupt Germany, and international pressure kept the maladjusted corporal from seizing power, maybe. Strong democratic institutions can actually do some good, maybe, however imperfectly?

I know this sounds like a goddamned center-liberal squish, but I really believe the solution to Trump isn’t beating up his followers, it’s getting into the streets and onto the ballots. But I don’t know for sure. I’m just a monkey who’s read too much Vonnegut, and look how HE turned out.

          • msanthrope

I used to be a prosecutor, and a lot of the cops I worked with were assholes. But one cop friend of mine, when we were driving down the interstate and everyone else in the car was urging the driver to go as fast as possible, urged him not to and said, “somebody has to be the good guys.” It’s been almost 15 years but I still remember what my cop friend said. If we want peace, we have to be peace. That’s what motivates me as I try to work through standing on the side of love in the face of people who want to kill me (I’m not just a UU, I’m a Jew UU!).

“Viewing violence as kind of like a sport is what motivates [these] shitheads … Violence is not fun.”

Sadly, violence as sport is embedded in America’s cultural DNA. A pro wrestler is president, Roger Goodell owns “the Lord’s day,” Gisele is a whiny nag because concussions never stopped Tom Brady from all that incredible winning, and PTSD is for weaksauce sissies who undermine morale of the troops.

The motto of the United States should be “no lives matter.” Because nothing will be done about this, just like nothing was done about Sandy Hook except giving an asshole who denied it ever happened White House press credentials.

I feel really sick about this place and disclaim any connection to it. From now on, I’m a displaced Canadian-at-heart who’s trapped behind the Orange Curtain.

          • Bad Tom

I think violence is in our actual DNA. We evolved from animals. Underneath civilization, we have animal instincts.

Real animals don’t need logic to survive. Instincts will do. But real animals don’t have the power to actually destroy the world.

Because we do have that power, we are in a spiritual, existential crisis. Will we let our thoughts destroy us?

So far, the answer is: Yes, yes, we will.

    • These aren’t bad boys, they’re evil boys.

      From the article:

They must take another lesson from Trump: to say out loud things they never said before, not as Trump does, but with honesty, decency, reason and specificity. Trump got to be president in part because there were so many things Democrats and the media didn’t think or couldn’t bring themselves to say. Trump’s whole life is a fraud that Robert Mueller may soon expose as a criminal enterprise. His business career was a disaster till a book someone else wrote and a TV show someone else produced made him a celebrity. He then fell into the only line of work he ever prospered in: licensing that celebrity. He does it pretty well, but Zsa Zsa Gabor did it first and Kim Kardashian did it better and neither of them should be president.

I would certainly take Zsa Zsa over 4-5 as President.

I guess they want to take back their school to only let white men in…….step-son’s Guard unit was called up, but he was not specifically there.

Trump’s plan is working all too well. Every institutional protection the citizens ever had will be gone in another six months. Bye, what democracy we once had. Hi, Putin-run kleptocracy.

      • Walter Wellstone

It doesn’t have to if we stand up and punch his plan right in the fucking face. It’s up to us to make this shit stop. Saying “I’m scared!” doesn’t cut it. Saying “Oh, well, it’s Putin time now” is cowardice. This is our country and we have to defend it from these motherfuckers.

        • TootsStansbury

I participate. I go to the rallies and contact my representatives. I’m not one to surrender but i do get frustrated. I want to see justice done. When i think about how we seemed to be turning a corner before President Authoritarian Fascist was “sworn in” and now we’ve lost all that ground and then some, it makes me heasrtsick. Now top it off with casually lobbing nukes around murderous Nazi mobs, well maybe I’ll donate to some of the gofundmes to make myself feel better.

      • Angela Ruzzo

I agree with Walter Wellstone below. You are being negative, pessimistic, and cowardly. This is a revolution, and you are either a warrior for the cause or a bystander. If you want democracy, you will have to fight for it. If you aren’t able to fight, you can support those who can.

        • thixotropic jerk

I think we need to hear everybody’s opinion no matter how dark. To pretend that the fears that Toots that brings up aren’t credible is being blindly optimistic. I don’t like feeling negative myself but I’m not going to deny those feelings or think myself cowardly for simply expressing them. And based on their comments below, it’s possible to have more than one view on our national crisis. Berating people on your side because they don’t meet your criteria for being democratic or militant enough is counter-productive at best and judgmental bullying at worst. I get you’re upset we all are but I expect better from you your comments are almost always so on target and wise.

          • Angela Ruzzo

I don’t agree. Fear and inaction are our greatest enemies, just as FDR said. I’m not upset at all. . .I simply have no patience with fatalistic cry-babies. If people don’t like what is going on then they should stand up and do something about it, or donate money to those who are doing something about it, not whine about the collapse of Democracy after one little skirmish and hold up a white flag. Maybe it takes a little bullying to get people to stand up and fight for freedom. But make no mistake. . .we are at war here. “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.”

  • Bitter Scribe

Some of the “neutral” comments I’ve seen (for instance, to a column by Leonard Pitts Jr. of the Miami Herald) break down along the lines of, Well, those college kid libs are always trying to pick fights and they should have known that these white supremacists are a tough bunch who wouldn’t back down, so they should have just left them alone.

Right. It takes a tough bunch to demonstrate on a college campus before classes start, when you’ll be sure to outnumber whatever few students are there. And only a real he-man would plow his car into a crowd.

    • Angela Ruzzo

All you have to do is look at photos from the event, hardly anyone looks young enough to be a college student. Also, the murdered woman was a 32-yr-old paralegal, not a college student. Leonard Pitts is an ignorant asshole sometimes. After 9/11 he wrote an article in which he said Americans “don’t willfully rain carnage upon civilians. And we don’t dance in the street when innocents die.” Apparently Mr. Pitts never heard of Hiroshima or Dresden or Wounded Knee. I haven’t trusted a thing he has said since then.

      • Tasha Naraganza, of Spain

First off, please note that Scribe is referring to comments made in REACTION to Pitts’s column, not the column itself, which I recommend that you read. It deals with our long national hypocrisy over racism.
I would also like to remind you that any dancing in the street over Hiroshima and Nagasaki was being done by American soldiers, who now realized that they were not doomed to die in the invasion of Japan, where likely U.S. invasion losses were estimated at nearly 1 million. And frankly, thank God those bombs were used when they were small, and not very powerful, yet powerful enough to scare the crap out of anyone in a position to use their much more powerful descendants in later generations. The fact that the bombs were used then is very likely the reason we are alive today, instead of being dead from the nuclear exchange that was up to one Russian officer’s discretion during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

        • thixotropic jerk

“Small and not very powerful”? Then how did those small and not very powerful bombs manage to kill over 200,000 people? (Conservative estimate.) I realize you were probably speaking in relative terms but still. And the bombs were at least as much a message to our Russian “friends” as they were to Japan. There is considerable credible debate about how we would have won the war against Japan without resorting to bombing them with nukes and without the number of GI deaths that is an all-too convenient statistical justification for an act of questionable morality, even in war.

          • Tasha Naraganza, of Spain

You seem to grasp my point.

        • Angela Ruzzo

I know all about dancing in the street over Hiroshima. My father was sitting in Marseilles waiting to get on a ship to sail to Japan when the bombs were dropped, so I probably wouldn’t be here if it hadn’t been done. And I know all about the arguments pro and con for dropping those bombs, including the “estimated” casualties, which were really an educated guess, and I still don’t approve of it. Our only justification at the time was we didn’t actually know what the bombs would do, and the people dancing in the streets afterwards might not have been quite so happy if they had known about it. You will notice we have never used them again, once we knew, and neither has anyone else…yet. And yes, we owe a great deal to Vasili Arkhipov, but we wouldn’t have been in that situation in 1962 if we hadn’t totally fucked up in Cuba and driven Castro into Khrushchev’s arms.

      • Bitter Scribe

Think whatever you want about Pitts, but just to clarify, my synopsis above was of some of the comments to his column, not the column itself. The column itself boiled down to, This is what happens when too many white people don’t take racism seriously enough. Which is perfectly reasonable IMO.

        • Angela Ruzzo

Mr. Pitts is right, but that’s so obvious! Of course white people in America don’t take racism seriously, otherwise it would have disappeared long ago. In fact, that is the WHOLE PROBLEM and always has been. I remember when my public school was integrated in 1965, and three terrified black kids joined my 4th grade class. It wasn’t us 9-yr-olds who were causing the trouble (we got along just fine), and it wasn’t their parents causing the trouble, it was some of the white parents and white school administrators and white legislators causing all the trouble. That was 52 years ago and nothing has changed in this town except to get worse. Mr. Pitts is stating the obvious. But kudos to him for saying it.

    Seven Social Sins

    Wealth without work
    Pleasure without conscience
    Knowledge without character
    Commerce without morality
    Science without humanity
    Worship without sacrifice

This was before the fucking driver mowed-down the protesters, killing one of them. I realized that “passive resistance” is only effective against authorities who are willing to follow the law. These days, we have a rabble of lawless scum to deal with (who violate those seven social sins in that list). This means we have to be able to defend ourselves. Somehow, without looking like the perps.

Things are going to get worse, and you need to be prepared for that and grit your teeth and keep fighting.

Turned out he wanted ALL the colours on his face, just like a princess (according to him). There he was, a lovely, colourful princess, when his father came over. Dad took a look at his son and said, “wow buddy, you look great!” and that was that. He has hired a coterie of shitty, D-list lawyers and drunks to defend him, he can’t STFU and restrain himself from imperiling his own case by jabbering about it. Does he not understand the ocean of shit he’s in, or does he think that lies, payoffs, and bullying will earn him a free pass, as it has for his entire life? We in Canada need to pay attention to what happened in Charolettesville yesterday. We also have people here attempting to divide us so that we won’t look at what is really causing the problems. I came across this and it made me heartsick because I know it’s true.

        From Meanwhile in Canada:
        4 hrs ·
It’s tempting as Canadians to feel a bit smug and just sadly shake our heads at the USA and Trump, but the alt-right is getting loud here too.
Growing inequality between the .01% and the other 99.99% has created an environment of scapegoating. There are political and corporate forces all too willing to exploit that frustration of not having the same opportunities our parents had. Food and housing prices have skyrocketed, but wages have been mostly stagnant for decades. Instead of focusing on how that happened, they want us to be divided. The alt-right want us to focus on immigrants, unions, women, Muslims, indigenous people, the LGBTQ2 community anything at all to divide us up. The only way forward is to work together for justice and equality for EVERYONE.
Indigenous people in Canada have faced injustice like few can even imagine. People of colour are carded and harassed. Hate crimes against Muslims are on the rise. We have work to do, Canada. Let’s not forget that.

Note should be taken of Richard Spencer’s victory speech, which was valiant and defiant for about 30 seconds, at which point he was told to get off the statue like a rambunctious toddler. Apparently the torchlight march was just a game of capture the flag.

Quoting from daily shitstorm’s Anglin: “if you are at a bar in a group tonight, random girls will want to have sex with you.” Maybe even seven virgins, right? Hm. Where have I heard that before? Sounds like they have ripped a page from the ISIL recruitment playbook. I’m tellin’ ya, the ISIL-Right is a great brand-name for them. Use it early and often.

The President condemned in the strongest words possible…

    Uh…huh, sure he did.

Motherfucking Trump built a white nationalist brain trust in his administration consisting of white supremacists Steve Bannon, Sebastian Gorka, Stephen Miller, Michael Anton and has racist and bigoted Jefferson Beauregard Sessions as Attorney General tells us that Donald J Trump supports bigotry and hatred.

    ***mic drop***

If there’s one thing he knows is strong condemnation. (See: North Korea statements). If he was going to condemn, he would say how bad their ratings are, how nobody likes them, and they are so ugly and he would not fuck them…you know, really hurtful stuff.

Why would anyone say that? And it wasn’t a white supremacist march anyway. It was just meant to “Unite the Right” and some random racists showed up, just totally randomly. With torches and swastikas, for some reason. So, it was good, and it was good that it became racist and violent, but that isn’t our fault at all. It was all the leftists who made it racist and violent.

He is shorter than Napoleon by about 4″ or 10 cm (units of length were not consistent between countries). And he does not meet any of Hitler’s criteria for the “Aryan Master Race”.

So, he is shorter than the standard for height mockery (it was basically English propaganda). And his hero would reject him for not being sufficiently “genetically pure”.

The nutty nasty neo-nazi notion that white people will ultimately prevail is absurd on the face of it all. Hispanic and Asians in this country have many generations behind them in the good old usa. On the maternal side of my family, my lineage goes back to a time when my family actually owned slaves. On the paternal side my lineage begins at the end of the 19th century. I’m willing to bet that the majority of the white supremacist nutjobs can’t trace their lineage back more than 2or3 generations. This led me to ask Google when will white people be in the minority. Maybe never. I came across an enlightening article from a year ago. I hope I made a good link here, because this column is well worth the read.

    • Cat Cafe for the Prosecution

Only a truly weak, ignorant, abject failure of a person could find so little to value in himself that he’d celebrate a meaningless index like “skin color.” Not only that, but the very idea that “white people” should prevail, when most of civilization has been created by everyone else, for centuries–Muslims were inventing hospitals and advanced mathematics while these idiots’ ancestors were slavering in caves; the ancient cultures of China and Egypt created technological advances that still work today; even the iPhones they tweet their hatred from only exist because of the son of a Syrian refugee–is utterly absurd to begin with, as well as literally implausible, as you point out. It’s like saying “soon there will be more green-skinned vegetables than tomatoes! Huzzah!” These are hateful, poisonous people with nothing whatsoever to offer the world, and we must absolutely suppress them back to their hiding places behind the kitchen stove. We must root out the evil in the White House that is enabling and encouraging these cockroaches.

Even after all these years of accomplishment, “white” people have always been, and remain, a minority group of world population, no matter what nazis choose to believe about “achievements”. If anything, the supposed “accomplishments of “the white race” will amount to nothing more than a “flash in the pan” of human history.

I’d suggest you try another flow chart that asks the question, “Should I post a comment advocating violence?” with the major variable being “Would doing so violate the rules?” HINT: Yes, it would. So the answer would be please don’t expect further comments of that ilk to remain in place.

My own personal flow chart includes a warning for a first offense (may or may not include removal of comment), proceeding to a time-out from commenting for a day or two, then eventually a permaban. If the offense is egregious enough (which your flow chart isn’t anywhere close to), a permaban can also come sooner.

“Instead of a call for dialogue, or even trying to explain what would be a totally reasonable and easily-made argument against flying Nazi flags or torch-lit demonstrations, he chose to further drive a wedge, as did those who flanked him on stage.”

The only “dialogue” that the racist supermen of Nazi Germany engaged in in the 30’s and 40’s flowed on the treads of tanks, the muzzle reports of guns, the explosion of bombs on civilians (look up “Guernica”, racist trolls), the rumble and whistle of trains delivering human beings to concentration camps and the rants of unhinged Leaders who manipulated newspapers and radios.

The Nazi tone in this “dialogue” became noticeably defensive when the Red Army dialogued the annihilation of the German Sixth Army at Stalingrad. The rest of the “dialogue” is written in the history books.

Now American Nazis want “dialogue”? Why would anyone want to “dialogue” with monsters?

Yo Nazis! Fuck You And the Horse You Rode In On. That’s the only “dialogue” you deserve.

          • bupkus231

No such thing as a “sane conservative: – because today’s “conservatives” have no idea what that ideology means.

Might as well form “The Bozo Party”, for as much attention these guys pay attention to “traditional” definitions. They’re as close to the “formal” definition of the “conservative ideology” as Bozo the Clown. Edmond Burke is rolling over in his grave….

          • jesterpunk

By sane conservatives I mean some of the local ones that where around when I was younger who actually cared about their communities and would try and help their people. I didnt agree with all of their policies but they would listen to anyone and try and help if they could. They dont exist anymore thanks to the right moving farther to the right and refusing to compromise on anything.

          • bupkus231

That’s just it – “… when i was younger…”. Despite sounding like the stereotypical oldz, there was a difference in how people saw this stuff – and it really wasn’t all that long ago. If “we” weren’t all that dedicated to seeing “our” side win, maybe our “all-too-human” governmental representatives wouldn’t be quite as complicit in the “race to the bottom” that today’s politics has turned into.

I’ve longed railed against the “all politicians are crooks” meme that has denigrated the difference between Dems and Repubilcans – bit there’s not longer any doubt in my mind that today’s GOP is so focused on their own partisan political fortunes to the extent that they do not care who they hurt. The “conservative movement” is even worse – and most of their “adherents” have no idea what “conservatism” was EVER about. It’s a buzz word, with no real meaning, except to hide their hatreds….

This clip is from Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie

Stars include William Shatner, Edward Teller, and Frank H. Shelton (author of Reflections of a Nuclear Weaponeer.)

Technical critics (like me) note that the time between the firing of the atomic cannon and the gadget exploding is far too short. If it really happened that quickly, they would all be dead from radiation.

There is no wild sound. Every sound on the film during this sequence is added later. None of the booms heard represent anything that happened that day.

But the footage does. The footage redeems this film.

“Because if I’m shot the men won’t notice,” Admiral Nelson replied.

i think it’s a safe assumption, the answer is no.

(If that was snark, sorry, exhausted).

      • Pete Deer

I was there, and I was a counter protester. There were some contigents of Anarchist cadres who were also armed and ready to rumble but most of the opposition were citizens, like me, who live in this city and wanted to protect it. I was not going to sit at home while gangs of Nazi’s and Neo Confederates marched about my city like they owned it. This was our town and we showed up to fight for it. Some of us got in streetfights of dubious purposes and others were left to clean up the mess. As a rogue volunteer medic, I ended up treating several of the wounded from that terror attack that happened in my very city, on a street I pass by all the time.
I will fight for my country, and I will fight for my city. And I will fight to protect my fellow citizens from fascist ideologues who have no respect for the US Constitution or even basic human rights.

          • Pete Deer

It was a difficult day. Watching a parade of Nazi’s march down the street after a Swastika battle flag shouting Hitler Youth slogans was something I never thought I would see in my town. I never thought I would be tending to my comrades in the wake of a domestic terror attack either, but there it is. Before I became a critical care RN I worked for years as a EMS Paramedic, so working being a street medic is kind of 2nd nature to me, but this had to have been one of the most cramped, chaotic and awful scenes I’ve ever witnessed. I posted a video of the day on the FB thing if you are interested. Fortunately, I have friends and family I can talk with about what happened, but it has all still left me really shook.

          • WomanInThePersistence

I can only imagine. Please be sure to take care of yourself. You did good things, and deserve good things from the universe. Pity the universe can be a bastard sometimes. And I mean it, thank you.

I have to say I read very sensible tweets and E-mails this weekend from people I didn’t expect to slam rightwing extremists. Bill Kristol, Huckabee, Rubio, even Ted Cruz all made very strong anti-fascist statements. I’ve also been surprise by some of the previously stalwart GOPers who have spoken out adamantly against Trump since his election. David Frum, the neoconservative speechwriter, and Richard Painter, W.’s ethics (?) lawyer, have both been burning up Twitter for months with condemnation of everything Trump says and does. So, no, it’s not every Republican.

She is married to the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, and is the first African-American First Lady. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, Trump is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, and spent her early legal career working at the law firm Sidley Austin, where she met her husband. She subsequently worked as the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago and the Vice President for Community and External Affairs of the University of Chicago Medical Center. Oh, my. That’s brilliant.

  • anon_the_great

Sorry Dok, the time for non-violent resistance is past.

    • doktorzoom

Advocate violence here, and I can guarantee you’ll be asked to take it elsewhere. If, after being warned to keep the rules in mind, you find it impossible to not call for violence, you’ll be very firmly encouraged to take it elsewhere. That’s pretty much non-negotiable.

      • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

Plus I really don’t think Dok, Evan, Shy and Trix want to deal with the ocean of raw sewage that comes when we start waving the big bulls-eye on this little mommyblog.

        • bupkus231

“…that comes when we start waving the big bulls-eye on this little mommyblog.”

From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t take much to get the assholes riled – but whatever we’re doing,we’ve been remarkably free from that sewage. I used to participate in a moderated “reader’s forum” at the Washington Post website – and there was nowhere near the shit that came through once they moved to the [ unmoderated ] “comments section” that they ( and the rest of the Internet ) have moved to since.

So, the very fact that Dok, Evan, Shy, and Trix ( is that all? ) have at least expressed the willingness to act ( whether or not they have to do more the the minimum ) against those who transgress has “protected” us against the worst of the worst that the Internet encourages. Whether we “need” such “protection”, or not, is a whole ‘nother discussion…

Face it, I love being able to sat “Fuck these fuckers” – but, if I couldn’t. I’d find some other words….

          • WomanInThePersistence

I love the rules. We can say fuck, cunt, asshole, etc. with no worries. But frankly, I am no fan of flame wars or threats of violence. And I really appreciate having a site that takes that very seriously. The mods work so hard to keep this a lively, but decent, little recipe hub.

          • Hamilton Ω, AKA Formerly DN

I feel that we could all learn how to be more creative in demonstrating our anger, rage, angst, etc. without using violence. I’ll put my money where my keyboard is and strive to learn this myself.

          • Spotts1701, Nothingburger Chef

Hey I don’t think anyone’s advocating that we can’t tell the fuckers to fuck off. Just as long as we don’t go much beyond that. :P

I will fight for the right for these losers to assemble and speak their minds. I will also point and laugh.
The moment the civil war begins I will fight again. Not before, and not here.

Problem is they do not assemble and speak their minds, they assemble and start fights and are basically violent as hell.

        • Jonny On Maui

And we all pay the peace officers to deal with that. When they ask for help keeping the peace, well, that’s when to enter the fray.

I finally watched one of the videos form the “Liberal Redneck”, which so many have posted here, and I have to admit that he does have something worth listening to. I may have heard it before ( even in the “redneck” accents and vocabulary, he uses ), but it is rather eloquent.

Maybe, I’m just drunk – it took me all too long enough to post this, after trying to correct typos…

    • Granny Sprinkles

So… I’ve been invited to a few vigils and rallies to “stand with Charlottesville” already. Those are nice I guess, but not really my scene, so I’ve decided to bring a daughter or two and spend some time in Charlottesville, shopping, eating, and generally hanging out and spending money at locally owned businesses.

Any suggestions? Cool music venues? Locally sourced food?

      • WomanInThePersistence

        Bless you.

      • CogitoErgoBibo

Oh my. Where to start? Stay downtown if you can afford it. Patronize anyone on the downtown mall. Go to Monticello, and the Discovery Museum on the mall (if you have young kids), for your brain. Talk to the locals. We’ll all be happy to cater our suggestions to your needs. Welcome!

        • Granny Sprinkles

Let’s not give these idiots any ideas. Pitchforks are pretty easy to find at farm supply stores. And can do some serious damage.

      • Elendira

They want to recreate the quintessential Nazi moment. When Hitler was appointed Chancellor for the German Republic, the Nazi held a midnight torch lit parade to celebrate their rise to power.

and also real torches take work so you don’t burn down your own shit
