Once upon a time, back in January of 2015, Michelle Obama went to Saudi Arabia and did not wear a head scarf — which she intended to be a deliberate statement on the women’s rights situation in that country. Which, you know, is not too good.

Donald Trump was none too pleased about it! Which was interesting, given that he was so deeply convinced that President Obama was a SECRET MUSLIM, and how often he went on and on about how much he really hates Islam:

To orange-colored boys who have considered wordicide / when the Twitter is enuf

Welp! Apparently we didn’t make “enuf” enemies at all, because Melania Trump has joined him on his trip to Saudi Arabia, and she is not going to be wearing a headscarf or abaya either. Because apparently she even plagiarizes Michelle’s fashion decisions/political statements.

Ivanka Trump, who is also part of her father’s delegation, has also declined to wear an abaya. You know what she is probably wearing? One of those cold-shoulder dresses or tops. She has a LOT of them in her “fashion” line and I have decided that perhaps one of the best ways to take down the Trump administration down is to start a rumor blaming her for the whole loathed trend. Yes! It is totally Ivanka Trump’s fault that we can’t find shirts with shoulders anymore. Tell your friends, spread the word.

I do not personally blame Melania for not wanting to wear a scarf on her head, mind you. As you can see from the picture, she clearly just got a blow-out while on the plane, and putting a scarf over her head after that would just negate the whole thing. But why isn’t Donald Trump concerned that this may insult people, like how he was when Michelle Obama did it?

It’s almost as if — wait for it — he doesn’t actually have any true convictions at all, outside of constantly looking for ways to go after people he does not like.

I bet that right now you are wondering “Well gee! What did Jim Hoft, the Stupidest Man on the Internet, have to say about this?” Or not! But I am going to show you anyway, because it is hilarious.

I like that he specifically contrasted it with a picture of a time when Michelle Obama did wear a headscarf, rather than the time she did not. The actual article, outside of a dek that says “Beautiful First Lady Melania Trump will not be asked to wear a head scarf during her visit to Saudi Arabia this week” is, of course, just a copy/paste from Russia Times about how they don’t actually require women to wear head scarves when they are visiting the country. Nothing about how a special exemption was made for Melania on account of her being so beautiful.

He then follows that up with a picture of a woman in a full niqāb, for reasons.

Please give us some money, and help fund my own scarf collection.

If Trump was going to plagiarize from Obama then I wish he would have lifted a page from Obama’s book like:
    a) not be corrupt
    b) not be a traitor

All these things Obama was accused of but didn’t do unlike Blow dried Kumquat 45.

Melon doesnt copy Michelle Obama, here is Melon’s biography see how different it is from Michelle’s?

Melinia Trump is an American lawyer and writer who is First Lady of the United States .She is married to the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump and was the first African-American First Lady. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, Melina is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, and spent her early legal career working at the law firm Sidley Austin, where she met her husband. She subsequently worked as the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago and the Vice President for Community and External Affairs of the University of Chicago Medical Center.

      • The Wanderer

        Ah, okay.

      • MassiveQuantitiesofPie

True but men still rule all the clans in Tuareg culture. The leadership is determined through the female line, but the leadership is still male.

In most Islamic cultures, woman are veiled because of the misogynist obsession with their “modesty” and the supposition that women’s looks and sexuality can force a man to sin. In Tuareg culture, which is basically Muslim with some traditional tribal beliefs and practices retained, men aren’t veiled to shame them or protect their modesty but because veils are believed to be shields against evil spirits. Tuareg women generally don’t wear them. The unavoidable implication being that men’s souls are believed to be worth protecting and women’s aren’t.

Tuareg culture is also deeply stratified by class, although some castes have disappeared due to the poverty of the last several decades. Slavery is still practiced, although technically illegal, with many descendants of former slaves still serving their ancestors “families”. Tuareg also frequently raid villages to abduct new slaves, including sex slaves. Many of their slaves were only freed in the last four years after French troops started attacking their Islamic jihadist allies, including a branch of Al Qaeda, who supported and protected them.

Calling out the hypocrisy is fine.

      • Yes, thank you. I’m over all the slut-shaming aimed at Melania. The worst thing I can say about her is she has truly terrible taste in men.

        • MassiveQuantitiesofPie

Agreed. I would only bring it up if she started hypocritically judging women doing things that she used to do but I haven’t seen her do that so, it’s irrelevant IMO. This overseas trip is only like the third time she’s actually acted as FL. Let’s judge her performance, not her past. She’ll almost certainly come off far better than her husband.

          • Good points all around. I despise her husband, but have no issue with her. I can’t even be annoyed that she’s costing tax payers so much money so she can stay in NY. She probably wants to keep herself and her son as far away from him as possible.

I actually worry about Melania. I can’t even imagine what it must be like to be married to that awful man.

This whole stupid thing is stupid, and only shows western journalists’ ignorance and bias that they continue to promote false narratives. Foreign woman are not required to cover their heads in Saudi Arabia. The regular stories about the way female dignitaries dress in Saudi Arabia is just another way to promote the idea that women’s dress needs to be regulated. Here’s one on Theresa May – I’m sure you could find scores of others. Why do they have to keep writing this drivel? http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/04/world/theresa-may-headscarf-saudi-arabia/index.html

In this case I think largely because Trump accused Mrs Obama of hurting America by going bareheaded.

    • major_asshole

To put it mildly, this story is a story because Trump ran his fucking cockholster about Michelle Obama not wearing the headscarf, and then when his own wife does it–*crickets*.

It’s like every other thing Trumplethinskin has ever said. There is one standard for him and his kin, and one for everybody else.

      • SeekingResistanceBarbie

I think trump has few, if any, standards, unless you call emergent characteristics “standards.” He probably made the remark about Michelle because he heard it somewhere and latched on to it as a way to criticize the Obamas, not as an expression of any real belief he held. Then he forgot about it. And of course he is immune to his own hypocrisy.

      • Perkniticky

Actually, that’s not true. Female dignitary not covering her head in Saudi Arabia has been a go to story for journalists for ages. I understand it has a useful secondary purpose in this case, which is to call out Trump’s hypocrisy, but the series in general is stupid and pointless, as are most articles commenting on female politicians’ dress.

  • Shanzgood

Back when I was just a baby feminist in my freshman year of college, I worked with an Iranian expat/student who tried to explain why women there had to cover their hair: Because their hair emits rays that drive the men into a sexual frenzy. He also explained that in their culture it’s the women who are considered “naturally” to be the rational, practical ones, whereas men are prone to emotional outbursts and other flights of fancy.

So I asked “Why don’t the men just stay indoors and let women run everything if they can’t be trusted not to lose their minds at any moment?”

The case of the UFC fighter who beat and raped his (ex-ish; she was trying to break up with him) girlfriend who also happened to be an adult performer pissed me off so much when people were like “well, can you really rape a pron star ha ha” and “yeah but she had fucked him before so not rape” and “oh but she’s done rough scenes so it’s cool.”
Imagine for a moment that Fighter Bro is walking down the street. Earlier that day, he’d been in contact with Fighter Mo, a dude whom he’d fought before in the ring, and sometimes sparred with in the gym. Fighter Bro had since switched gyms and no upcoming bouts with Fighter Mo. Now, as Fighter Bro walks home from the bodega, Fighter Mo jumps out of an alley with a chain and beats nine kinds of shit out of Fighter Bro, who manages to land a few hits and escape with his life.
Is Fighter Mo guilty of assault, or is it cool because “they’d fought before?”

In Western culture, it’s become women’s responsibility to civilize our men. That’s why we’re made to believe it’s our fault when they do violence to us: we provoked the beast somehow.

And look at the position Ivanka has been put in regarding keeping her father under control. I’m not saying that as any way of expressing sympathy for her, just using it as an example.

          • IOnlyLikeCats

No, you did understand. Mostly. I was more thinking of those who are mostly joking about a male curfew and other things that would free women and teach men.

          • Shanzgood

I understand that in theory but one of the biggest struggles for civil rights has been against people afraid that losing their privilege is going to mean they’ll be treated in as shitty a manner as whatever oppressed group seeking equal rights has. It seems counterproductive to me.

          • IOnlyLikeCats

There are less women and POC with developed characters on my TV screen than there were when I was a small child. There are multiple studies showing towards women specifically (but also towards POC) we’re regressing as a society. I’m not willing to squabble over what’s counterproductive when over half of men think rape can be justified.

But you’re entitled to your opinion and your ideas about solutions.

          • (((fka_donnie_d)))

Yes, and I’m sorry if I sound like a mansplainer but…

            A) trying to take “people afraid” into account is problematic on All Of the levels. At the very least it causes you to waste All Of the time and All Of the effort.

            B) Conservatives in America have been getting what they want for decades without giving two shits about any opinions but their own. Perhaps we should worry less about their Precious Snowflake Feefees and more about what the fuck we need to get done. Remember, at various times we had serious, organized leftist movements in this country. This didn’t prevent wide swaths of various bullshit up to and including Trump.

          • Napoleanofthetrump

That’s why I feel that privilege is the wrong word. It’s the baseline for how people should be treated. Calling it privilege implies that a non sexist/racist society would have everyone treated as sorry as poor women of color.

          • Shanzgood

No, that’s not what privilege means.

          • Napoleanofthetrump

No it isn’t. And that’s why privilege isn’t really the right word.

          • Shanzgood

It’s the right word for what I was talking about. People are fighting for basic civil rights. The ones fighting *against* them think they’re going to lose THEIR rights if others gain them but what they’re only losing is their privilege.

I’m amazed at the prisons secularish Muslim women in the US build for themselves; other religions too, I guess—Hasidism, anyone? Wanna be Amish?
Mormon? “Escape from Freedom” or “Freedom Never Offered.”

      • IOnlyLikeCats

Not sure what you mean by ‘prisons’, although I know some women wear the clothing by choice. And why shouldn’t they, if they would like to?

        • I’ve been seriously considering wearing burquas to work. Then no one would bother me.

          • House0fTheBlueLights

I wear hijab sometimes. This used to work, but not anymore. Now I get abuse, and I live in a very tolerant, liberal city.

        • Wild Cat

Not referring to clothing. I’m refering to mind prisons. I’ve talked to Muslim women in jeans and sneakers who believe marijuanna smokers should be jailed, premarital sex is evil, marrying outside of your ethnicity/religion is verbotten, etc. Mind prisons—that’s why I used the word “secularish.”

          • IOnlyLikeCats

Oh, that makes more sense. I don’t really understand why any religious people would try to force their beliefs on society at large, pretty much all religious texts have a section that says, “Respect everyone, no matter what religion they are.”

          • Wild Cat

I’m mostly refering to my Asian-looking house cleaner who is young and from Kasakhistan. She is very secular, feels threatened by Putin and our “president,” yet erects so many mind prisons via her culture/religion she’s actually as authoritarian as they are.

Yeh. This was my response when a friend living in India was telling me about a proposed curfew for women to stop them getting raped. Why not make the men stay at home if they’re the ones who can’t control themselves?

    • (((fka_donnie_d)))

Not entirely in response to you but…

So confusing… Men are more rational, but also they are instinctually rapey, but Westerners are more rational, but Islamics are real men (because they can control their women), who will come to rape all the Western women, who secretly want to be raped. Or not so secretly, cause theyre sluts.

Its difficult to see how some people get anything done, other than writing/saying stupid shit online. Oh wait, they dont.

Well, the time I got in an epic shouting match with my Iranian grand-manager, he was the one who started it. Nominally it was about me being “disrespectful” in a meeting with another team’s graphics expert (said expert agreed with me that his component was not a good fit for our product, in a perfectly normal meeting of tech minds), actually it was because I was Female And Opinionated (And Right) and he was Iranian. And office politics.

      • Shanzgood

I got into a screaming match with an American guy co-worker who was furious because I rolled my eyes when I walked away from him…after he waved me off rudely in the first place. So what are the odds that Trump just doesn’t come back? That he orders AF1 to fly to, I dunno, Moscow (or some nice non-extraditing country with a Trump hotel), and refuses to return to the US?

Do not allow your gym to do that to you. Complain to management. Give them a copy of the documentary “Outfoxed” if they are puzzled by your complaint. • NerdWithNoName

In Saudi Arabia when you see a woman without an abaya do you say “Hooo baby, look at the ears on that one”?

    • Teecha

The abaya is just a coat. The niqab covers the face. You’d not see the ears unless she took off her headscarf.

      • NerdWithNoName

I get it now. When Robyn said “she is not going to be wearing a headscarf or abaya either.” I read that as abaya = headscarf. You learn something new everyday.

        • Teecha

Happy to help! Here, there are loads of different styles of scarves. We call them hijab, but hijab seems to actually mean modest dress. At least according to the qatar history text book I was looking at last week. Instructions on how an abaya should hang and everything!

If you’re more observant than I, you can tell which country a woman comes from by the way she wears her hijab. (I can currently only spot Qataris, Egyptians and Indonesians.)

I think he simply has no clue how to bow properly, which is inexcusable. He should have a protocol officer who teaches him these things. Virtually all POTUS’s have them. The Obamas were always meticulous about things like this, which is one reason why they were so popular overseas. They projected respect and so they got respect in return. Something tells me Donnie refused to hire someone to teach him this stuff.

  • Elendira

I don’t know how I feel about the headscarf issues. On one hand, it can be representive of a culture steeped in misogyny and male domination. On the other hand, when you visit somebody else’s house, you don’t kick down the door and spit in their eyes.

When my ex-wife and I toured Italy, she would wear a bikini to the beach and wear light clothing during day because it can get fucking hot, especially in the south, but on days when we visited churches and the Vatican, she wore knee length dress and a scarf on her head.

Then again I am male and it doesn’t really apply to me — so what do I know. Perhaps somebody will tell me I am full of shit

A friend of mine was asked to leave a supermarket here last week because his knees were showing.

I struggle with the hijab thing too. It predates Islam and has a long history of being a symbol of oppression. But the women I know who wear hijabs tell me that they do it in honour of god and it’s important to them. So who am I to tell them not to?

      • Edith Prickly

I feel the same way. I don’t like what it represents, but adult women get to make their own decisions about what they wear.

      • C4TWOMAN

The main problem I see is one of selective application. The Koran says MEN AND WOMEN should dress modestly. But how many times do men, once in the West, get away with tight jeans and T-shirts while the woman is still expected to dress traditionally modest?
        yeah right.

Also too, these “requirements” go right out the window as soon as they get in the way of functionality. That right there shows it’s about “values” controlling women, when a big hairy deal is made of it.

I have no problem with individuals choosing to where the hajib or whatever. But any man demanding women “dress modestly” had damn well better be wearing traditional loose pants and shirt himself, not Levis and Hanes.

        • Teecha

You’re right. But that’s a slightly different issue isn’t it? Women being pressured or forced into modifying their behaviour by men. Women choosing of their own free will is not the same. But then, how free is your will when you live in a society where it’s the norm to do x or y?

It’s not a thing I see often here; the discrepancy between male and female modest attire. Most men wear national dress. And as I mentioned before, a male friend of mine was refused entry to the supermarket/mall because his knees were showing.

          • C4TWOMAN

Your friend is such a slut.

The problem is not that women are being asked to “show respect” but are being asked to “allow themselves to be regarded as dirty things that have to be covered.” Not wearing a bikini in the Vatican is a completely acceptable, non-degrading form of showing respect, just as we don’t generally wear bikinis to go to a job interview. Wearing a knee length dress and even a normal head-scarf is very, very different then being asked to cover yourself with a burqa.

      • Elendira

well unless you are interviewing for a job at Fox News, but I understand your point.

    • MassiveQuantitiesofPie

Western women who are only visiting aren’t required or even expected to wear them unless they visit a sacred site.

Fancy that. I posted before scrolling down, but seems some genius at Fox (no author in the byline for some reason) wrote a full article with their hot-take that Trump greeted the Saudis upon arrival without bowing like a common Obama.

(And of course, the Daily Mail is also running with it.)

It’s still ridiculous. It was then, and it is now.

If Trump chooses not to be an asshole with some small gesture, I don’t care.

        He’s got way bigger problems.

        • Greyhame

That’s basically it. With a looming constitutional crisis at home, most of the credible news organizations are rightly not giving a shit about who bows or doesn’t bow in the PR photos. It’s as if they don’t know they’re fake news! SAD

      • doktorzoom

Errm. Your comment history suggests you’re progressive, but the first time you comment on Wonkette is to accuse someone of racism? The use of “blah” for “black” here is an (overdone) inside joke on that time Rick Santorum insisted he hadn’t said “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money,” then insisted he’d gotten tongue-tied and said “blah…people’s.”

In general, popping in from nowhere and calling people racist on the basis of a single very ambiguous comment is poor form.

I have a friend that was in Saudi Arabia in1989, There was a British Airways flight crew staying in the hotel he was in. One of the stewardess’ jumped into the swimming pool without a swimsuit. She had to be smuggled out of the country to keep her from being stoned to death. A lady friend whose father worked in the US Embassy in Iran (before 1979) went on a date with a young man, unbeknownst to her he was a suspected drug dealer. She was given 24 hours to leave the country. It’s not such a bad thing both first wives didn’t wear scarves. But, that doesn’t excuse trump from being an ass.

    • Cat Cafe for the Investigation

Seriously? After he not only bowed, he curtsied, and CRINGED? All he was lacking was rolling over on his back and grinning submissively? Fox truly is a pestilence of lies.

      • Greyhame

It’s no wonder the conservative base is so confused and angry. It must be ever so frustrating when reality comes crashing in, always in direct contradiction to what they think they know about the world.

        • Cat Cafe for the Investigation

Yes, I often think that. If they truly believe the false picture being endlessly drawn for them (and the truth is successfully discredited), of course they are terrified and think they’re making the right choices. And so completely unhinged when their “truth” begins to pixillate and disintegrate. It was completely bewildering for loyal Nazi sympathizers when Berlin was actually bombed.

    • Begin Anew Day

    • miss_grundy

So I visit one of my reliable used book stores today and the Very Nice proprietor was wondering how notorious homebody donnie had been coerced onto a plane and made to go overseas for nine days.

This led to a discussion and eventually we worked it out.

It ain’t donnie on the plane. It’s a body double. Probably a gang of body doubles. Any closeups of him speaking will be of him being transmitted from a studio down in Florida. They dare not let anyone else do the speaking since any average intelligence stand-in would come off as being vastly more intelligent than donnie. The backgrounds can all be faked with digital technology.
