Uh oh! More trouble in Drumpfland. Surprising, I know!

[Trump reportedly having issues with his second National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster
    582017
He may not be the McMaster of his domain for long.

President Trump’s National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster is reportedly on the outs after less than three months on the job, Bloomberg News reported Monday.

Trump is “disillusioned” with McMaster and the aide has angered the President by failing to give “him a chance to ask questions during briefings, at times even lecturing him,” the news agency reported.

Specifically, Trump was “livid,” according to top White House officials, after he read a Wall Street Journal report that McMaster had phoned South Korean officials about comments the President had made about not paying for a new missile defense system.

Trump also raised his voice at McMaster on a phone call and complained about “the general undermining my policy,” other officials told Bloomberg.]

  • Rick Hill

So…there is a likelihood that financial and insurance related jobs will become automated. Which will be worse? Programmed wealth management AI’s using cold calculations to determine financial strategy or the soulless Martin Shrelkis of the world to continue as they have been?

    • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

The AI is less likely to gloat about how they screw the poor…so I’m gonna give the edge to the machine here.

      • Rick Hill

Yeah but their calculation will only include maximizing profits, regardless of the human or environmental costs. And the insurance angle….

        • Historicat

heir calculation will only include maximizing profits, regardless of the human or environmental costs.

Still not seeing a difference here.

          • Rick Hill

Machines might be more efficient, is about all.

        • h4rr4r

Environmental costs would be factored in. The reason so much pollution exists now is because it can be externalized.

Any strong AI is going to try to maximize profit over long time windows, which means polluting land that will be reused. So it will avoid it.

          • Rick Hill

Long term? But the programmers want that yield NOW, not in ten years.

          • h4rr4r

Programmers don’t ever get the money.
            The investors do.

          • Rick Hill

And the investors pay the programmers.

          • h4rr4r

            As little as possible.

      • jesterpunk

But if they cant gloat how can republicans have big parties?

    • RobKanC

I am gonna say that there is a upper limit for automation before automation destroys all the jobs. We are not in that part yet. But at some point, we will reach a point of dimnishing returns

      • Rick Hill

With no one able to buy products or services. I guess the law enforcement bots will be a huge growth sector. Then the financial bots will determine the costs of keeping prisoners vs the open market price of human organs….

        • Unmutual Tetsu Kaba

I’ve been wondering if the Rethuglicans and their 1% overlords understand that if they make the rest of us poor serfs, that no one will be able to afford their products and services. What happens to their shitty economy then? Or are they unable to look beyond their short-term profits obsession?

          • OrG

They don’t think past this fiscal quarter,if that far.

          • Rick Hill

No matter how shitty the system, there’s always people at the top who are comfortable and don’t care past that comfort. They can also afford to employ a security force and give them machine guns

        • Oily Messiah

Reverse mortgage your organs! Get income now!

Then they package organ futures into securities tied to reverse organ mortgages and sell them fraudulently, without disclosing the risks of increasing human life expectancy. Finally, when the bubble bursts they liquidate the organ supply and take a huge payout of taxpayer money from the government which if not already replaced with androids is at the very least deep in the pockets of big AI

      • IOnlyLikeCats

This is why universal income is so important. Although I doubt certain jobs will ever be fully replaced by robots.

        • Rick Hill

Universal income but with societal obligations. Train people to do the things that are necessary but either cost prohibitive or that cannot sustain a person. Rehabilitation services, neighborhood renovation and landscaping, elderly care, etc

          • IOnlyLikeCats

Japan has robots for elder care. What if you can’t complete your social obligations? Wouldn’t it be better to have society forcing people to do their best to meet them? Say nothing of the other things people could be doing, like art.

          • Unmutual Tetsu Kaba

The Japanese robots are more companions than true caregivers. There are some things robots can’t do like change diapers.

          • Rick Hill

There are also things which most would like to have available but who can afford it? Like having a dog who’s getting older and needs hydrotherapy to keep active. I love my Buddy but I can’t spend anything like that even if it makes his later years much more enjoyable

          • Rick Hill

There’s always people completely unable but without everyon doing something to contribute then it is a system where more and more people would just stay home and play video games and have sex with robots

          • IOnlyLikeCats

We have more than enough people to fill the cracks, and having been unemployed because I’m disabled, I can tell you most people would choose to do something. Even if it was just community gardening. Do you know why? Because doing nothing is boring and societal standards not being met causes anxiety. It’s like school. People will do it, but it’s better to give them a choice, so they feel more comfortable with it.

          • Rick Hill

All around it’s a good idea but having people active and providing is even better. I would do gardening in my neighborhood if I didn’t have to work like an idiot to keep afloat.

          • IOnlyLikeCats

Let me put it this way: putting conditions on it will lead to at least a few people who cannot contribute but cannot prove they can’t contribute will be excluded, whereas without there will be a few lazy people who don’t want to do anything mooching off the rest of us. You have to choose which one you’d rather have.

          • Rick Hill

Yeah and you have a system to help people who are unable to help. Which is the human condition, that at some point you are young, sick or elderly and at all points need assistance.

          • IOnlyLikeCats

My American friend living in Sweden is looking for a caretaker job even though her fiance makes enough money to afford the apartment and their food. I work even though I don’t have to cover any of my own expenses. People will still do it even if you don’t punish them for not doing it and you really don’t seem to understand humanity.

          • h4rr4r

I make no money building things. I have a day job yet I still create.

          • IOnlyLikeCats

Why do they have a view of humanity that’s so factually incorrect and downright pessimistic?

          • h4rr4r

            I think it is projection.

          • Rick Hill

In Israel they had a study. Some daycares wanted to see if people were more punctual in picking their kids up if there were a penalty for late pick ups. Something like a $45 fee. Late pickups increased as people were busy and rationalized they were paying for something and, when they were late, they left their children there to the maximum time limit. Failure so they went back to the old system. Problem got even worse as the societal obligation of being punctual had been removed. That is humanity. There are people who will help regardless. There are people who want to give. There are a lot who will sit on their asses all day and do the minimum required if they can get away with it. I don’t think it’s easy but there has to be a way to make it work because the jobs are going away.

          • h4rr4r

Wait, they provided a way to buy more time at the daycare and were surprised people bought the new service they offered?
If you sell something people will buy it.

          • Rick Hill

And, there you have it. The daycares were not offering a service, they were charging a penalty. Same way some people would look at the fact that a city pays people to clean the streets, other people will take that as license to throw more trash on the ground as it’s someone elses job to clean it up

          • h4rr4r

No, they were offering a service. They just did not realize what they were doing.

Again, assuming all the trash gets picked up, I don’t see any problems.

          • IOnlyLikeCats

Maybe adding extra money to people who take the jobs? I like how you use an example of punctuality instead of working or learning because none of *those* studies would help your point. Let me go easy on you because I’m too tired for research. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/3670605/Summerhill-The-school-where-lessons-are-optional.html Classes are optional, yet students go. What were you saying about people not wanting to do anything again?

          • Rick Hill

Even if 80% of people will willingly get out and work, that last 20% will muck everything up and wreck a system. You look at the children of the wealthy and see how human behavior evolves.
            http://www.dumpaday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/a-people-are-bastards.jpg

          • IOnlyLikeCats

More like 95%, to 5%. Your views are unscientific and shouldn’t be used for governing. Especially when you can’t come up with real solid evidence to back you up.

          • Rick Hill

Well, last I checked I don’t tell anyone else what to do and how to live aside from Rick Hill and Jack dog. So I guess the govenrance thing takes care of itself

          • h4rr4r

No we don’t we are approaching peak employement.

It took me months to fill the last vacancy in my department. Ended up hiring back a former employee at a much higher rate. I almost feel bad for his last employer, almost

          • IOnlyLikeCats

I mean for when the robots take all the jobs and globalization is complete. We’re talking about the future.

          • h4rr4r

Yes, but even then we are going to have even more jobs.

People said the same thing about the industrial revolution. More recently about computers.

Things that are right now too trivial to bother with will become entire new fields of employment.

          • IOnlyLikeCats

I stick by scientists in believing robots will take over most of the jobs and basic universal income is important.

          • h4rr4r

I think UBI should exist now. Before robots take over. However I just don’t see robots taking all jobs. Humans will desire human made things once robots produce all the things we need.

          • h4rr4r

            What is wrong with that?

          • h4rr4r

Japan has robots because they are massively racist against filipino nurses.

          • Toomush_Inferesistance

          • jesterpunk

Also art, music, literature, teaching ect.

        • My job is one of those that can’t be fully replaced by robots, at least not in the next several decades. For one thing, working in a wilderness area, going over various terrain as well as having to use boats to get to some places isn’t something that robots have been quite successful at. That’s just to get there, let alone do the various tasks.

          • jesterpunk

            What about drones?

          • Too many trees get in the way. It’s a case of “yeah, you can fly over it, but you can’t land.” For example, a couple of years ago the local forest ranger asked us to help him put a new outhouse up on one of the wilderness sites. Beside having to boat out the kit (which weighs around 125 pounds total) several miles, you have to locate a good place to dig the hole at least 150 feet back from the water, carry it all in there, dig the hole, and put the kit together. It’s a two to three person job. Then remove the old outhouse, and fill in the old hole. I wouldn’t have minded telling a robot to do it, but I doubt it’s going to happen in my lifetime. A drone would just … fly over it.

        • snark-lurker

          such as?

          • IOnlyLikeCats

I don’t know about you, but I’m not getting all my literature from robots. And I doubt they can pass as people in movies. Or be directors.

          • h4rr4r

You don’t use robots in movies, you use cgi.

          • snark-lurker

            Pretty much anything.

Once automation makes normal things too cheaply, people will desire hand made goods. People will want the defects that such production has.

          • IOnlyLikeCats

I forgot to mention that. I know artisan goods are very popular right now with millennials, for the details as well as the humanity.

          • h4rr4r

That will only become more popular. Massively so.

As humans are freed from mundane production more and more art, both traditional and crafts will be created.

      • OrG

machines make things for cheap but no well-paid employees to buy any things

          • h4rr4r

I buy cheap machine made goods now and have the money to do so.

Automation will continue to drives prices down and free up humans for better things.

          • The Wanderer

“We’re all sorry for the other guy when he loses his job to a
machine. When it comes to your job, that’s different. And it always will be different.”

            – McCoy, on technological progress, The Ultimate Computer

          • h4rr4r

            That’s a tv show.

Here in reality you go get a new job. My father has lost his job to automation twice now. He is now an RN.

He too enjoys the results of automation.

Are some people left behind? Sure, and we need training for them. Not to have them go on disability, blame foreigners and vote for fascists.

        • RobKanC

The capitalists and managers who finance these shit.. Also, at some point, the number of unemployed ppl will stop buying shit which will bring back companies hiring human capital because thats the only way to make money.

      • Rick Hill

As soon as the matter to energy conversion units are perfected…

        • h4rr4r

No, need to bother. Humans can be dried and burned as fuel. This can boil water to make steam to drive a turbine.

          • Rick Hill

            Pretty inefficient.

          • h4rr4r

            How?

It costs almost nothing to do and produces energy.

          • Rick Hill

Raising a human to the point they produce enough calories to heat a significant amount of water to power a generator. The amount of food, water and other materials. Wasteful. Much more efficient to reduce the human population and set up solar fields in the place of cities

          • h4rr4r

Why would you raise them for this use?

They are widely available. Just wandering around.

The human populations are reducing themselves quite fine. No need to do anything but wait.

completely OT. very strange dream last night.
i’m at the station for my regular train. the train’s standing at the platform but nobody else is there. i get in and wait for a minute. nobody else arrives. from my window i see a freight train across the platform standing with the engine shunted for pull. i leave my belongings and commandeer the freight train. we go through vast vistas, hills, bridges over rivers. i feel bad, decide to return back to station. way back is very treacherous since i’m on the engine and can’t see anything in front. some how make it to station, where i sense somebody circling my mugshot.

She was an amazing person, she had been through a lot of shit in her life but still managed to be positive and a joy to be around. Less than three years ago I went to her wedding, the last time I saw her was less than a year ago, you wouldn’t have known that she was fighting cancer, but it seems she had been sliding quickly over the last couple of months.

What bad news, I’m so sorry to hear that. My uncle has leukemia, so I know how difficult it is to watch someone live with cancer. His “ups” are almost worse than his “downs” as he wonders how long each “up” will last.

After my mother died, I had trouble coping with the grief, until I realized that the human heart is like that Bible quote about “In my Father’s house are many mansions.” Each person I love has their own separate room in my heart. After each person you love dies, you are stuck in their room in your heart for a long time, and you are overwhelmed with grief, and unable to leave the room. I had to learn when I could handle going into her room, and when I couldn’t, and then I had to learn how to leave her room when I couldn’t handle a visit. This took weeks of practice and several cases of wine. Eventually I could go in her room and enjoy the happy memories, and then leave, and close the door behind me.

        • Carpe Vagenda

I didn’t even realize the most famous one came from my family’s region, but I adopted pinot grigio in the early eighties.

      • Left Coast Tom

It’s actually possible to do a good quality Zin Rose (broc Cellars in Berkeley has, for example), but the reputation was ruined by Sutter Home, et. al., with their “White Zin”. On the other hand, I’ve seen “White Zin” credited with providing a market to save old Zinfandel vineyards until the serious wine market could catch up.

While in New Zealand in February I went wine tasting in Marlborough, and one of the wineries, Gibson Bridge, was only Pinot Gris. They had a Pinot Gris rose (yeah, white wine, but leave it on the skins and you get a rose). Delicious.

    • RobKanC

so I bought a honey wine called Viking blod. I was expecting it to be like alcoholy but it was too sweet.

      • Elvis Causticfellow

That would be mead, I believe.

The great motion picture The Vikings, with Tony Curtis as a Brooklyn-accented Viking, contains some crucial scenes set in the Mead Hall.

        • Up In Smoke O’hontas

Mead can be delightful! It’s not naturally overly sweet as long as the brewers let the little yeastie beasties do their thing with all the sugar.

          • RobKanC

thats it thought, this one was too sweet. I couldnt drink after 2 sips but then stirring it made it a bit hoppy but still too sweet for my taste buds..

          • Up In Smoke O’hontas

Some of the bigger craft brewers and cideries do it well, but we have a Meadery in town that absolutely kills with a ginger hibiscus mead. They get a spot at the block parties so gluten free people can have fun too :-) don’t know if they’re able to distribute but it’s called Bos Meadery.

          • La forza del resistino

Read a kid’s take on why pet’s don’t live long enough. ‘It takes people 70 years to fully understand unconditional love while pets know on day 1’.

        • Angela Ruzzo

My last cat that died would greet me at the door every single day when I came home from work, demanding a cuddle and a belly rub. I kept looking for him for two weeks, and waking up at night thinking he was sleeping on my feet, as usual. It takes a long time to adjust.

      • Meccalopolis

Wow! That’s a really nice way to look at it

    • Resistance Fighter Callyson

So sorry to hear this. Hugs to you and MissTaken!

    • :snuggle: All the love, JMP

Aw, so sorry. It’s so hard to say goodbye to our dear fur babies.

    • La forza del resistino

Sorry to hear the news, friend. She looked quite the cutie.

    • MynameisBlarney

      Oh damn.
      That sucks.

    • Suse

      Pretty girl. I’m so sorry…

    • Angela Ruzzo

That’s terrible news, I’m so sorry. The last time I had to have a beloved cat put to sleep, I cried for a week. That was 13 years ago, and I still miss him. You have my deepest sympathy.

      • Jenny

I put off having a pet for decades cuz losing my buddy was so devastating. I can’t help but feel I am going to be in that state when my new fur babies go.

        • Angela Ruzzo

Yes, I’ve been there. After the beloved cat died 13 years ago I gave away the litter box, the cat tree, the water bowls, and all his toys, and swore I would not get another cat and go through that again. But kittens are irresistible. 16 months later I adopted an 8-week old tuxedo kitten that someone dumped in the neighborhood. He was starving. He was adorable. I saved his life. What could I do?????? And then he died suddenly of an enlarged heart at age 3. Grief. I gave all his stuff away and took another oath. But then 2 years later a neighbor found these abandoned kittens and OH NO NOT AGAIN! One of them now rules my house. I am 60 years old, so she has to be the LAST CAT!

    • Yr. Gma

That is bad news. I have been there myself too many times. She’s a beautiful girl.

    • Jenny

That is awful. I am sorry. Pets are better than people most times.

    • LucindathePook

What a sweetie. I’m so sorry. She had a great life with you.

    • Sedagive ’em Hell

My condolences. Such a lovely little lady.

Trump dismisses Russia inquiry as ‘taxpayer funded charade’

After a Senate hearing on Russia’s influence in the 2016 election, President Trump fired off a series of tweets blasting as a “hoax” any allegations of collusion between members of his campaign and Russians and dismissing investigations into those possible ties as a “taxpayer funded charade.”</blockquote

So why would he care? Not like it cost him anything.

    • Ω cynmac will never surrender

Taxpayer funded charade like his administration? Boom.

  • My husband told me Colbert was fired :/
I don’t wanna google. Fraid I might destroy my computer again.

    • IOnlyLikeCats

      You’ve destroyed your computer?

      • Not yet, that is why I did not want to google it XD Figured you’d all know the skinny since I was AFK all day

    • Chadwells

      Is not true.

      • Danke ^.^

        • Chadwells

I would go postal if he was fired!!!

          • I was just about to boycott CBS, which would be bad here since we do not have the cables and that is like…a quarter of our channels XD

    • RobKanC

I can’t find it online.. I only saw that his union was supporting him.. But can’t say I wont be glad if he goes back to CC and takes over the daily show. We desperately need the daily show back.

      • IOnlyLikeCats

        I like Trevor Noah, personally.

        • h4rr4r

He seems fine. His delivery could use work, but Stewart’s was awful his first few years.

          • jesterpunk

Thank you, so many people just look at Stewart near the end of his run and forget that up until 9/11 he wasnt that good.

          • Eh, I started liking him about 2-3 months into his tenure. At first I was all…CRAAAIIIGGG NOOOOOO
But then he grew on me

          • jesterpunk

Oh yeah same here, I liked all the hosts so far but Jon did get a lot better after 9/11 and W invading Iraq. He didnt start off as good as he was near the end of his run either.

          • True that. He was a little…awks? But I figured /just finding his stride

          • jesterpunk

Yeah same goes for Trevor but he has the added handicap of following Jon Stewart who hosted the show for a very long time. People dont want to give someone a chance as much anymore and want them to be great from the start.

    • Chadwells

The worst they could do is fine him. This has been blown WAY out of proportion. The FCC looks into 100000000’s of complaints of this variety. The WGA is now in the mix as well.

      • ariel_gee_398

And frankly, I bet CBS is thrilled by the free publicity, not upset or even considering firing him.

    • Debbie the Unpaid Protester

Snopes says that’s a false news item.

    • Angela Ruzzo

I frankly don’t see anything homophobic in Colbert’s remarks, but then I am 60 and outside the mainstream culture. Several media sites say this is just Republican trolling.

      • Jerry Noneofyourbizz

I’ve been gay for over 50 years now and cannot find one damn thing homophobic about it. And although this doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened, I have not seen one gay advocacy org make a complaint about it. The brouhaha seems to be coming from Trumpsters trying to come up with an “I got ya'” that has no merit whatsoever.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

Glad to hear that. I was hoping none of the advocacy groups fell for the faux outrage being ginned up

        • Angela Ruzzo

Thanks for sharing how you see it, and I totally agree with you. I suppose Republicans accusing Colbert of homophobia is no difference from Republicans telling women what to do with their reproductive organs – a power trip, based on hypocrisy and stupidity.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

            Just more shit to sling

          • Jerry Noneofyourbizz

I saw one story in The Hollywood Reporter. All it cited were people commenting about people talking about it on Twitter. Basically, “the ladies in the beauty parlor were talking about something one of their husbands heard someone said they read on the men’s room wall.”

    • jesterpunk
      • ayep. Cute. Fake news about firing someone.
I guess they were desperate for a “win” of some sort eh?

        • jesterpunk

The snowflakes got their feelings hurt by Colbert making fun of Trump. They are going to be even sadder after France last night and when they realize Colbert isnt fired.

          • He should do a non apology
I am so sorry if your feelings were hurt when I suggested Trump was sucking Putin’s cock. I never even though anyone would be upset by my suggesting that Trump sucks Putin’s Cock. I figured everyone could take a joke, about Trump sucking Putin’s cock, but I guess some people are just so sensitive, like fragile snowflakes.

          • jesterpunk

            He did last Wednesday.

          • I am in bed long before he comes on XD But good

Got an “oh, fuck” moment for us, WaPo link?

President Trump’s most senior military and foreign policy advisers have proposed a major shift in strategy in Afghanistan that would effectively put the United States back on a war footing with the Taliban.

The new plan, which still needs the approval of the president, calls for expanding the U.S. military role as part of a broader effort to push an increasingly confident and resurgent Taliban back to the negotiating table, U.S. officials said.

The plan comes at the end of a sweeping policy review built around the president’s desire to reverse worsening security in Afghanistan and “start winning” again, said one U.S. official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

    tl;dr: oh, fuck…

    • Oily Messiah

  • Left Coast Tom

For my fellow Sierra hikers, from the Reno-Gazette Journal: West’s Super Snowpack Could Be Deadly Summer Hazard.

    Regarding Yosemite’s high country:

“(I)t would be overly optimistic to think about hiking easily in the higher elevations until August,” the report stated.

    Regarding the Tahoe Rim Trail:

Portions of the trail in Desolation Wilderness and on Mt. Rose near Reno are expected to remain buried well into summer.

    Also, too… ”

Skilled hikers will survive and thrive, unskilled will suffer”

    • survive and thrive? It is hiking, not like rocket science

      • Left Coast Tom

In general, expectations are the season will be nearly two months behind
schedule. That means conditions this July could be similar to what
hikers might find in May during years with smaller snowpacks.

One will need to know how to snow camp, and travel over deep snow, this season.

        • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

Gonna be a lot of SAR going on this year. Lots of idiots who don’t properly prepare, get lost, and then need to be rescued after they end up in the back country with no clue what to do.

      • Pre-Existing CatCafe

Search and rescue is a major, major thing in snow areas. People go hiking in light clothes with no water or food, get stranded, think their cell phones will work. Very, very frequently have to be rescued, sometimes die.

        • Left Coast Tom

I imagine the deeper concern this year is that deep snow will coincide with lots of 70s daytime highs (followed by freezing nights), and summer vacation season.

          • Suttree

I’ve hiked Mt. Washington a few times. The weather there is something to be concerned about. It isn’t that big from base to peak, but the weather will change in 5 minutes!
            ETA: Yeah different coast but…..

          • Left Coast Tom

The concern in the Sierra this summer isn’t along those lines, the typical summer weather in the Sierra is about as benign as it gets for a major mountain range. It’s that with many, many feet of snow around, one may dayhike across a stream in the morning and find it a raging torrent in the afternoon. Or, one may not recognize avalanche terrain and be caught in a wet snow slide. Or, that one may be without snowshoes and posthole into a many feet deep hole. Or, fall through a collapsing snow bridge.

        • Courser_Resistance

Yup, I’m part of a SAR group, though we don’t generally get called for snow stuff. We’re mainly a front-country group, though we do train in the back-country.

        • I am trying to be sympathetic but I am finding this one difficult. I will pretend that people are smart and they just were having an off day when they decided to go hiking with no water…..

          • eddi_the_Bad_Hombre

Charles Darwin is there to see them off on their great adventure.

          • Pre-Existing CatCafe

Well, I suppose sometimes they bring a single small bottle and have no emergency supplies. They think they’re going for a little stroll and then are stranded with nothing. Plenty of warning signs, too. On the other hand, we get people here in L.A. (Griffith Park) who try to hike in fucking SANDALS and get stranded on steep hills, or fall into gulleys and they have to send helicopters to rescue them. My favorite was some dickwad who wanted to “get off the grid,” and climbed somewhere in the San Bernadino mountains, got stranded by a snow storm, and had to be elaborately rescued by, you know, people ON THE FUCKING GRID

“It is the feast day of the Fisher Saint. This powerful figure is portrayed as a woman haloed by twin suns, holding a dog. She is the patron of sufferers of mental illness, scriptwriters, and generals. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/canine-corner/201704/dogs-prefer-advice-people-who-actually-have-the-answers

Dogs Prefer Advice From People Who Actually Have the Answers
“Dogs are not simply four-footed robots that can be programmed to respond to instructions regardless of the state of affairs. If they think that a person is knowledgeable, at least when it comes to information about things which are important to them, they are more likely to accept commands from that individual.”

    • BadKitty904

Dogs know treason when they smell it.

    • Ω cynmac will never surrender

Yeah, I’ve had to tell my dad not to issue commands to my dog before. My dog is trained to bark only when something alarms her. He’ll make sudden moves and she’ll come near me and bark at him. Then he’ll say “be quiet dawg” in a loud voice that only upsets her more.

Dad called me this weekend to tell me that the kid is pretty sure he will graduate later this summer from the USAF Superman School — Pararescueman Training. For those who are not familiar, Pararescuemen (or PJs) are the guys whose job is to rescue downed pilots. They are about the only people in the world who listen to a SEAL war story and say, “uh, yeah, cool story, but where’s the part where you perform one handed chest compressions on a pilot in the middle of a firefight while returning fire with your free hand all while dangling from a helicopter? Huh?”

Anyway. Good kid, that little fucker.

I’m not sure what that means.

          • Hutch

Quiet room. No talking to folks. Difference with extroverts is they like to think while they’re talking. Introverts come up with thoroughly thought through conclusions

          • Anna Elizabeth

Extroverts get energy from interacting with others. We introverts get energy from isolation.

No fishy smells though, I’m pretty much chained to the desk and am either on the phone, dealing with customers face to face and basically being the mediator between my my dad, brother and the customers, vendors and distributors.
If I were in a wolf pack, I think I’m what some would call an Omega. The lightning rod, so to speak. I take on all the bullshit from each side and translate it so both sides come to an agreement. Meaning, we get paid.
Gettin’ pretty fuckin’ tired of that shit, truth be told. Which is I think my dad wants me to be the CEO after he officially retires.
            I don’t want it.
My biggest fear is that I won’t be able to be free and clear of this hell without creating a major rift in the family.
I love them because they’re family, but I don’t really like them as people.
            They’re assholes.

It’d be nice if we could redo today’s hearing and maybe stick to the subject:

Eric Trump said three years ago the Trump Organization had “all the funding we need out of Russia” for its golf course projects, according to an author recounting the story of a 2014 meeting with Donald Trump and his son.

The author also said Donald Trump “sort of tossed off that he had access to $100m”.

The author’s comments – which Eric Trump later said were “completely fabricated” – prompted widespread interest in the media and online.

Two congressional committees and the FBI are investigating alleged ties between Trump campaign aides and Russian agents during the 2016 presidential election. US intelligence agencies believe Russia sought to influence that vote in Trump’s favour, in part by hacking emails belonging to the Democratic National Committee (DNC)[…]

Golf writer James Dodson was speaking to WBUR-FM, a Boston-area national public radio station, on Friday. The co-author of Arnold Palmer’s autobiography described a visit to the Trump national golf club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Trump was strutting up and down, talking to his new members about how they were part of the greatest club in North Carolina,” Dodson said. “And when I first met him, I asked him – you know, this is the journalist in me – I said: ‘What are you using to pay for these courses?’ And he just sort of tossed off that he had access to $100m.”

Eric Trump, the president’s younger son who is now executive vice-president of the Trump Organization, was also present.

Dodson continued: “So when I got in the cart with Eric, as we were setting off [to play], I said” ‘Eric, who’s funding? I know no banks – because of the recession, the great recession – have touched a golf course. You know, no one’s funding any kind of golf construction. It’s dead in the water the last four or five years.’

He said, ‘Well, we don’t rely on American banks. We have all the funding we need out of Russia’

HEALTH HELL: TRUMPCARE COULD REALLY HAPPEN
Yes, It Is Definitely Possible For The House And Senate To Agree On Health Care

Senate Republicans are already working with the leader of the House Freedom Caucus.
    By Matt Fuller

Democrats may overestimate the level of disagreement between the two chambers. And if the last two months have proved anything, it’s that we’re underestimating the ability of Republicans to accept a flawed bill in the name of winning.

We may also be surprised by what House conservatives could accept from the Senate.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) has already been working with Senate Republicans on what changes House conservatives could live with, knowing that the Senate bill will probably undo some cuts to Medicaid and perhaps a key amendment that brought conservatives onboard in the first place.

“If it’s moving to the left, we just need to make sure we’re not losing too many conservative votes,” Meadows told HuffPost on Friday. “Obviously it’s going to get more relaxed as it relates to the Medicaid expansion.”

One massive change that House conservatives could accept, perhaps even welcome, is to ditch a dominant feature of the House replacement: the advance refundable tax credits.

Instead, conservatives may just take some changes to the Obamacare subsidies.

What Blum votes on affects everyone in this country, not just the people in his district. What Chaffetz, Ryan, Burr and McConnell do affects everyone, not just people in their district or state. Voters and people too lazy or disaffected to vote need to keep that in mind too. What you do and who you vote for in elections and campaigns affects 325 million people, not just yourself and your personal misguided conscience.

Man, 91, Died Happy After Family Told Him Trump Was Being Impeached: Obituary

Believing it was the most humane thing to do, the family of an Iowa nonagenarian told the dying man President Trump was being impeached.

Corliss Gilchrist died Wednesday at 91, just a few before his 92nd birthday, according to his obituary.

Watch: Daughter Writes Hilarious Obituary to Honor ‘Game Slayer’ and ‘Outlaw’ Dad

But before he did, the great-grandfather’s loved ones told the proud union factory man a white lie.

“We told him the process to impeach Trump had begun — so that he could rest in peace,” read the obituary, which was published Sunday in the Des Moines Register.

While there are no signs Trump is headed for impeachment any time soon, Gilchrist isn’t the first person whose family told a dying loved one that tall tale.

In Oregon, the family of Michael Elliott said 75-year-old died peacefully after being told the president had been impeached. ]

vive la France. Citizens assembling in a public square to enjoy a little Ludwig is anathema to 50% of Americans. We’re a drive thru society.

The words I say might sound to you quite mad
But yonder shines the sun – lo, take your ease!
For my own part I am so filled with joy
Methinks I fain could soar above the trees.
Yonder comes a prattler, shouting “woe” –
“Speak on”, I cry, “let not your wailing cease!
“For such is my delight at my own state
“That naught you say could e’er disturb my peace.”
You seek to drag me down into despair
And rob me of the fullness of my mirth,
But such is my delight and lack of care
That I remain full high above this earth.
      For I am glad, with gladness am I filled;
Come join me in my gladness if thou wilt.

Blondie is a perfect song for me to sign off with. My aunt in New Jersey texted me a Blondie song in advance of my birthday tomorrow because she turned me onto her when I was a wee lad and we still share that bond. That and SNL. She corrupted me like that.

      Night Anna!

The alt-right racist morons are beginning to fight themselves.

    • DrBigHead

Outstanding. So, how do we throw fuel on that fire?

      • jesterpunk

Not sure but that is a very good question. Also can we find them some secluded area to fight where no one else will get hurt?

        • DoILookAmused2u? Résistance☨

Schedule an alt-right, KKK, nazi, Trump supporter Burning man event, micro-target each group with ads.

I did the idea. Now I need a budget.

PS. We might get them to eliminate Kid Rock and Ted Nugent as a bonus.

            Kickstarter maybe?

          • jesterpunk

Invite Milo and Ann Coulter too. Also get a kickstarter or something for that event and I am sure you can get donations from everyone for it.

OK, so I’m not a fan of Walnuts, but he nails it in this NYT op-ed:

Why We Must Support Human Rights

In the real world, as lived and experienced by real people, the demand for human rights and dignity, the longing for liberty and justice and opportunity, the hatred of oppression and corruption and cruelty is reality. By denying this experience, we deny the aspirations of billions of people, and invite their enduring resentment.

America didn’t invent human rights. Those rights are common to all people: nations, cultures and religions cannot choose to simply opt out of them.

Human rights exist above the state and beyond history. They cannot be rescinded by one government any more than they can be granted by another. They inhabit the human heart, and from there, though they may be abridged, they can never be extinguished.

While I realize he does gloss over the fact that America has often failed to live up to its ideals, at least he thinks it is important to try to do so. Which is more than we’ll get from Donald the Terrible FFS.

(Note to self: budget in a contribution to Amnesty International)

    • La forza del resistino

It is a victory whenever McCain mentions ‘nations’ and doesn’t say pass me another bomb. Is our McWalnutz learning or close to feeling he needs to cram to pass St Peter’s admittance exam?

    • Jukesgrrl

He says this. But he steals holy land from the San Carlos Apaches and turns it over to a foreign mining company. How does that fit in the puzzle?

        Rio Tinto again? Assholes.

        Ditto for McCain, obviously. Fuck.

But it snowed in the mountains this winter, so global warming isn’t a thing.

    • WomanInThePersistence

That does not sound like the best week ever. How did the shows go?

      • alwayspunkindrublic

Things went fairly well, just crazy weather. Saturday was a hellish day….extremely windy and hot. Me and the hot, dry winds have an uneasy relationship…I get A LITTLE IRRITABLE!!11!!!. By the time we got done with our second show on Saturday, I felt like I was 110 years old.

How was the drinky thing? Should I scroll down for pics?

        • WomanInThePersistence

It was really enjoyable. I have no pics (flip phone) but Sister Artemis and Kevin both do. And Anna Rampage is a pickle GOD/DESS. Amazing, and mostly from home-grown produce.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

You have a flip phone? I love you. Glad it went well…I’ll look for the pics. I feel bad bitching about Saturday….Zippy was doing the sound for this festival and he had to be out in it for, like, 12 hours straight. He’s a real pro, that one.

          • WomanInThePersistence

I do have a flip phone. It amuses people. And Zippy, though I have never met him irl, has always struck me as a very cool frood. With complete knowledge of where his towel and/or sound system equipment is.

          • alwayspunkindrublic

Zip’s a great guy…super-talented sound man and keyboard player as well.

We were rehearsing the previous weekend and somehow the subject of phones came up; everyone in the band has a flip phone. What are the chances?

          • WomanInThePersistence

About a year ago, I was having dinner with my mom and one of my brothers. I mentioned that I get very mild grief for having a flip phone. They both pulled out theirs.

Have I mentioned recently that I love my family?

          • alwayspunkindrublic

            We should start a cult.
