Thursday was a real big day for Sarah Palin. After recovering from Wednesday’s whirlwind tour of the White House with Ted Nugent and Kid Rock, she swung by CNN for an interview with Jake Tapper. Although she was there to discuss her field trip, the subject soon turned to the disturbing sexual conduct of a man with a lot of power. No, not about her buddy Ted Nugent’s song about gang raping a 13-year-old with a police officer or the fact that Courtney Love has accused him of raping her when she was 12, or the whole “adopting a teenager in order to have sex with her” thing. And not about Donald Trump’s predilection towards grabbing women by the pussy either. But rather about Bill O’Reilly.

Shockingly enough, the first thing that came out of her mouth was actually quite reasonable:

“Corporate culture there obviously has to change. Women don’t deserve it, they should not ever have to put up with any kind of intimidating workspace.”

But perhaps she should have just ended it there. Because she then followed that up by implying that the women Bill O’Reilly harassed were greedy moral failures who stuck around for “paychecks” instead of immediately walking out in a huff.

“If a woman believes that she is being intimidated and harassed, she needs to stand up and do something about it, not stick around for a paycheck for years and years and years and then after the fact complain about what she went through.”

In a perfect world, that would be lovely. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world and not everyone is able to just go around quitting every shitty job they have. Not everyone can go and quit their job as Governor of Alaska knowing that they will still have money, that they can easily make money by having their own TLC reality show, or just form a superPAC to keep them in Taco Bell. That is not reality for most people.

And yes. Women do stay in jobs where they are sexually harassed, because they need the paycheck. A paycheck is a pretty big deal to most people who are not Sarah Palin, and sometimes, yes, women weigh the problem of dealing with a sexual harassment situation versus losing their jobs and not having food to eat, and sometimes pick the former. And them doing that doesn’t mean that what the sexual harasser did was in any way less wrong — forcing people to choose between dealing with that and surviving is what is wrong.

When women don’t report sexual harassment, it’s not because they don’t care and are fine with it so long as they still get a paycheck. It’s because they are scared that no one will believe them, they are scared of losing their jobs, they are scared of developing a “reputation” in their industry of being “trouble.” Because the unfortunate truth is that women know that this is something that is often held against them, rather than the other way around.

Contrary to the popular narrative that cruel women frequently accuse powerful men in order to attain fame and money for themselves, this is actually not a thing that frequently works out too well in that area. In fact, that narrative itself often keeps women from reporting these kinds of things, for fear of being seen that way.

According to IMDB, Andrea Mackris — she of “the falafel thing” — has not had a producer credit since the Bill O’Reilly show.

That aside, it appears as though Sarah is under the impression that all these women came out at once, years after they’d even worked for O’Reilly. They didn’t. Rather than a Bill Cosby situation where they all began coming out of the woodwork at once, what did Bill O’Reilly in was the New York Times reporting on his history of settled sexual harassment lawsuits dating back to 2002. Both Gretchen Carlson and Andrea Mackris went to human resources to complain as well, to no avail.

Which brings us to Sarah’s next point!

“As a strong woman, I say we should feel more empowered than that and we should take a stand and get out of the place or blow the whistle on whoever is the perpetrator.”

Fox, if not all of America (as a result of “the falafel thing”) was well aware of O’Reilly’s tendency towards sexual harassment. They kept him on, and kept allowing him to do this and paying off his lawsuits, because he made them money. There were not only whistleblowers over the years, there were recorded transcripts.

So perhaps the problem is not women not being strong women like Sarah Palin, so much as the fact that they are ignored and dismissed. Perhaps at least part of the problem is people like Strong Woman Sarah Palin who appeared on the O’Reilly Factor dozens of times since her 2008 Vice Presidential run, despite Andrea Mackris’s lawsuit having been brought in 2004. Really, anyone who appeared on his show following that lawsuit — including President Obama, frankly — contributed to giving him the power and prestige that made him so much of an asset that Fox was willing to overlook the whole, well, falafel thing.

(Not that we’re not all complicit in these things to some degree. Roman Polanski is a rapist and I still really love “Chinatown” and “Rosemary’s Baby.” I love music produced by Phil Spector. Hell, I even genuinely like a few Ted Nugent songs. The fact that it’s near impossible to avoid things created by abusive men is, well, a problem.)

America continued watching Bill O’Reilly after Andrea Mackris’s lawsuit. America elected a president who bragged about grabbing women by the pussy, kissing them without their consent, and spying on teenage girls in locker rooms. How can anyone criticize women for not being “strong” enough to take on their harassers when we aren’t “strong” enough to create a culture in which that kind of harassment is unacceptable? If you blow a whistle in an office where everyone’s got their ears plugged up, does it still make a sound?

    Callison-update from last night:
Update- the undercover Federal agent was apparently ICE. -I have a video (mostly just audio) that shows our interactions with the sheriffs but not the behavior of the ICE agents. They (sheriffs-8of them) claimed that we should be cool with guns drawn because the agents were serving a warrant for a felony. My concern is that the only felony committed may have been crossing the border after deportation. This guy they arrested was unarmed and did not put up a fight. What is the need for the firearm?? Unless they knew or suspected that he was armed or a flight risk, or otherwise hostile, why draw guns on bystanders!!!??? Second, if I locally call my sheriff because there is a asuspicious vehicle with a man pointing a gun, I expect my sheriff to protect me, not this nameless agent of the federal government, whether I am a citizen, legal resident, or undocumented member of our community. I expect my state and local authorities to stand up for me and my neighbors against the tyranny of the state if necessary..

If we lived in a world where a woman cursed by sexual harassment could quit her job and get another one without any blowback, that would by definition be a world that Mooselini would have actively worked to thwart and cripple.

I was sexually harassed by a teacher when I was 13. I told the school administration, and they told me that it was my fault for “dressing like a slut.” Also, that he had harassed other girls who did not dress like sluts. But that my slut-dressing was probably the reason. Weirdly, I was not allowed to drop out of school.

    • Anna Elizabeth

      I’m sorry Annie.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

It’s OK. It was mild harassment. Just a really sucky administration. Now, when I see administrators go overboard when something is reported, I think, “That might seem nuts, but you should have seen how little they gave a fuck back in the 90s.”

        • Anna Elizabeth

Yes indeed. Or in the 80s.

    • aureolaborealis

    • I know a guy who was sexually harrassed by older guys when he was 14 – because they were convinced he was gay and they were trying to get him to admit he wanted to be their bottom-bitch. And the teachers let it go because “if he doesn’t want it he shouldn’t be so effeminate”. (The young man in question was in fact straight-but-sensitive.)

        • William

When a new ship is accepted by the Navy, or returned to service after update/overhaul the Navy requires the vessel to meet the design and performance standards per contract. The ship is put through it’s paces. Speed, maneuver and stopping standards are tested and monitored. It’s pretty simple really. The bridge rings up speed, IE “all ahead full or flank”. Then the command is given, “left full rudder”. the vessel is expected to react appropriately and not roll over. The thing about a carrier is that (as I recall from my tour aboard the USS John F Kennedy). it’s so damn big the visuals are crazy. It’s essentially an object 10 stories tall and 1000 feet long skidding in the water. The scale of these ships boggles the mind. The anchors I recall weighed 35 tons and each link in the chain 350 pounds. https://youtu.be/p9NB_kENBhs

          • SweetDeeKat

            Wow. Thanks!

  • Fartknocker

    Sarah:
    1) If you are so strong why did you only serve 1/2 of your term as the Alaska gooberner?
    2) Fuck you and John McCain.
    3) If you are so strong why is that your daddy had to kill and cut up that moose you shot during your 15 minutes of fame on some TLC show?
    4) Your a cunt.

  • JDM

To be entirely fair to Sarah Palin, she is an expert on quitting. She quit 4 or 5 colleges, quit a governorship, and quit making sense a couple decades back.

    • UnsaltedSinner

Yeah, for some reason it does seem to work well for her.

  • From the NY Magazine article: “Donald Trump Jr. Said Women Who Can’t Handle Sexual Harassment ‘Don’t Belong in the Workforce’”

It is debatable whether Sarah Palin, with her comments, disqualified herself from a possible jerb in the trump admin.

    • mardam422

What? A job where she might actually have to DO something? Why would she give up being on that sweet gravy train she calls a life for that?

  • Reality Killswitch

She doesn’t know what harassment is. She probably got harassed all the time. She just didn’t know. Thought was a normal thing to go through.

    • MOG253

In her age group that’s pretty close to the truth, it was part of life if you wanted a career.

    • C4TWOMAN

There’s harassment and there’s harassment. It’s all bad, but I could totally see Palin as a “Oh yeah, come at me” kinda gal. I’m like that. Shit stops cold.
Because the sad fact is, like all bullies, they prefer targets that are scared.

Don’t change the fact they shouldn’t be doing it to ANYBODY.

  • Mavenmaven

It all makes sense in Palin opposite universe, you make lots of money by quitting your job, get pregnant throught abstinence, etc etc.

  • ahughes798

Robyn, it’s part of the age old tension…Trying to separate the art from the artist. I cannot STAND Ted Nugent, I outright wish he would get his genitals shot off(with votes), but dammit…Great White Buffalo is a really good song.

  • Lance Thrustwell

Robyn, I lurve you so much I am willing to accept that you like any of Ted Spugent’s music and be okay with that. THAT’S how much I lurve my Wonkeditors.

  • UnsaltedSinner

Empathy: How the fuck does it work?

    • C4TWOMAN

Welp, as Spicey said on SNL:

Fool me once shame on me.
Fool me twice, shame on Jews.

  • MOG253

Can we make this a Snowbilly free zone????

  • whitroth

So, did Sarah get felt up, and have her pussy grabbed by the Grabber-in-Chief, while she was visiting?

And about jobs… as Susan Urban, of February Sky, sings, “Thank you, lord, for this job I hate so much!”

    • Roadstergal

      She’s too old for PGiC.

    • i was looking for a job and then i found a job and heaven knows i’m miserable now.

      • whitroth

You might like the album with that song… and you might like the whole song.

ObDisclosure: Susan and Phil, who are February Sky, are friends. And *damn* good musicians.

I know how lucky I am to have a job I like, and a manager who’s both knowledgeable… and a friend. And that I do something I believe in (as long as our budget holds out, unfuck you very much, Trumpolini).

  • Lance Thrustwell

I think Sarah P is onto something, but she’s not getting it quite right. Y’don’t quit your job with the harasser; what you do, y’see, is record his advances, document the shit out of them, and take it to HR. And if HR is on his side, don’t do that – blackmail him with his wife. And finally, if he’s single, get a friend to slash his tires, key his car, break the windows in his house, etc., while having a rock-solid alibi for yourself.

These measures won’t work in all situations. But they will in some!

    • Shibusa

I was asked out, repeatedly and aggressively, by a physically repulsive specimen of a man, Brian, who was also a boss, about 3 or 4 levels above me, when I worked for Citigroup years ago. I said no, politely. When he didn’t let up, I quietly let the head of HR know. This was a mistake. Brian called me in for a “meeting”, which was incredibly stressful and awkward, and within six months, I’d lost my job even though I was doing well. My immediate boss, who was a good guy, felt bad but said, “You had to know this would happen when you reported Brian to HR.” I was young and had no idea what he was talking about. So I get why women keep their mouths shut. (Years later, Brian was fired in spectacular fashion so … karma?)

      • Bitter Scribe

And I’ll bet Citigroup had a reeeeealy good section on sexual harassment in their employee manual. That’s the way with a depressingly large number of companies. They talk a great game about sexual harassment, but when it comes to enforcement, forget it.

        • Shibusa

Yes. And the head of HR was a widely respected (and feared) woman at the time. She was useless.

      • LeftyProud

It really is terrible, but HR is mostly there to support and defend the employer, not the employee. Oh, edited to say how sorry i am you went through that crap storm.

      • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

So sorry you went through that. “Retaliation ” is now illegal too, but might not have been at the time this happened to you.
In my thirty years of government employment, I saw sexual harassment training take some strange twists and turns. One session back in the 90’s implied that women were delicate flowers who must never hear anything offensive, because if they did, they could sue, without telling you they had been offended, because women are so very, very easily intimidated. Holy crap!

    • kareemachan

Interestingly enough, I was *almost* fired for dating my boss – which NO ONE ever said I could not do. I was “allowed” to keep my job (summer job in college) if I apologized to him. I did in spectacular manner, stating that because no one had told me about the “rules”, I did not know I was breaking them. I hand-delivered the “apology” to my boss’ boss in person – who had propositioned me. VERY different from dating my boss. And he never dared bring it up again.

      • whitroth

Yeah, there’s a reason that *reasonable* companies say, no talk of sex, religion or politics in the office. There’ve been women I’d love to have asked out… but was afraid it could go wrong, and I wanted to keep my job, and not have an unpleasant environment.

  • Shucky Ducky

Great work here, Robyn. I’m virtually high-fiving you. I’ll send Trix a few extra bucks this month to go into a “eventually pay Robyn more monies” account.

  • C4TWOMAN

Palin is such an inspiration! A shining beacon to women that all you have to do to “be strong” is become a well funded, right wing hack, ex-beauty queen.

    • kareemachan

      You forgot “dipshit”.

    • whitroth

But you have to have a heavy-duty blender or food processor, so you can check a dictionary in and pull out words….

  • AnnieGetYerFun

Woah, hang on. What Ted Nugent songs, Robyn?

    • Alan

“Jailbait”. The rest are real, not songs.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

No, I meant which ones did she like?

        • Alan

          Ahhh, I stand corrected.

  • William
  • Jenny

Palin has no problem with sexual harassment because she likes it. Plus during her formative working years she was on tv. No uggos hitting on her! So no big deal, right??

  • aureolaborealis

I’m so glad she’s not Alaskan anymore.

Update: I see that the entire clan filed for Alaska Permanent Fund dividends this last year. I wonder where they’re living, because that could be fraud.

    • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

I thought she was still around and that they still had the house. I had hoped to catch a glimpse on my last visit to the offspring.

  • We have this idea of men as being slaves to their biological urges and unable to control themselves about sex and women as the gatekeepers, so ‘boys will be boys’ seems to be the default position for anything regarding sexual misconduct. We blame the woman because she is somehow supposed to be able to shut that down and if she didn’t, then she must have enjoyed it on some level.

And rather cynically, businesses like Fox News probably evaluate how much money Bill could make them vs. how much money a lawsuit and negative publicity will cost them and whether or not they can shut the woman up.

    • HazooToo

How are women even supposed to shut it down, if the attitude is that men can’t control it and ‘boys will be boys’? The women will always get blamed for it, in that scenario, because they will always fail to shut it down, because no one else will see it as a problem. You’re right and it’s fucking appalling.

      • Jack Rogue Tenhet

Correct! Nobody blames the victim in any other type of crime. Someone gets mugged, nobody says “He had it coming. Serves him right for carrying so much cash!”

        • HazooToo

“Why were you driving at night on a Friday? You know people drink and drive! Maybe you were just driving in the wrong part of town!”

          • sgt. jmk of the résistance

I tried that line of questioning with a sexist shit I was arguing with once and was told I was an idiot because that was – of course – totally different.

            They will NEVER get it.

          • Kind of OT-I was working in a bar/restaurant serving lunch and dinner (on Fridays). My car insurance was higher because not only was I working in a place that sold alcohol, I was also divorced. I doubt that the males employed and or divorced were not charged more. Just saying.

          • CatCafe #ShePurrsisted

Because they don’t want to. In their worldview, they should be able to do whatever they want, and women are just objects. If the woman protests, she’s being uppity. Women are chattel, and a woman complaining is, for them, like having one of their MAGA hats telling them it doesn’t want to be worn. Of course it’s different if it’s a MAN! A MAN is supposed to have agency, no one is supposed to mess with a MAN!

    • whitroth

I’m a bit confused here… On the one hand, us men are utterly controlled by our Lusts, and can’t control ourselves… and on the other, women are all emotional, and that’s why they shouldn’t hold public office, or run a company, etc.

Perhaps it’s just me, but I have this odd idea that they contradict themselves. Can we get them to go off in a corner for time out, until they decide one way or the other?

      • Anything that lets us keep power and escape responsibility.

    • Edith Prickly

And the woman always gets treated like the troublemaker when she brings it up, or people (like the snowbilly dingbat above) say “why don’t you quit if you don’t like it?” Why should the woman quit? She’s not the one hassling people.

    • CatCafe #ShePurrsisted

It’s worse than that. Asshole white men enjoyed years of being the default “norm” and being able to do whatever they wanted. Now they’re angry because that’s being challenged by these “non-normal”, inferior beings. It’s the same as their attitude towards anyone of color.

  • mancityRed6

“Hell, I even genuinely like a few Ted Nugent songs.”
Yeah, but no. I know, the first person without sin gets to get stoned and all, and since I don’t know the history of every artist I listen to, read, watch, or whose works I just gaze upon, so I’m not gonna.

    • mailman27

Though he is intellectually and morally bankrupt, he does have some musical talent. That being said, if a song of his came on I would race you to the radio to change the channel.

      • mancityRed6

you could say the same about the Monkees or Kiss, and I like either of those much more.

        • I liked the Monkees cause I was a teenager and liked their show. Kiss never really registered with me as I was older and they were not the kind of music I liked.

      • The only song I recall is “Cat Scratch Fever” which at that time got a lot of radio play. I was indifferent to it but now I wouldn’t listen to anything this creep does. I really hope that him and Kid Rock (another cretin) run for office as they have threatened just for the debate performances.

        • Zyxomma

Back when he was Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, he had a psychedelic hit called Journey to the Center of the Mind. Since then, he’s irredeemable.

Well, Sarah should know that not all cases of predatory behavior are so easily detectable in “the moment”. It’s like that for a lot of things and sexual assault is not exempt from that reality. That’s one of the unstated reasons women wait to come forward.

Sarah Palin just restated that tired defense for rape and sexual assault by blaming the victims. Nothing new here at all.

    • Zyxomma

And the state in which she was half governor has the highest rate of sexual assault and domestic violence in the country — and had years of untested backlogged rape kits, also, too.

  • BMW
    • JustDon’tSayFlatEarth

OK, good, I don’t have to post Brolly Bunny this time.

  • Edith Prickly

Fox, if not all of America (as a result of “the falafel thing”) was well aware of O’Reilly’s tendency towards sexual harassment. They kept him on, and kept allowing him to do this and paying off his lawsuits, because he made them money. There were not only whistleblowers over the years, there were recorded transcripts.

This has been annoying the fuck out of me since I read the Andrea Mackris documents on The Smoking Gun well over a decade ago. They KNEW and they didn’t fire his ass because he had a top-rated show. Just imagine how BillO and the rest of the Faux Snooze stable would have been frothing if there were legal documents floating around that proved Dan Rather or Tom Brokaw had been sexually harassing female co-workers and their networks kept them on anyway.

I’m not optimistic enought yet to declare this a sea change (see article link below) – Canadian radio megacreep Jian Ghomeshi got away with harassing women for years too because he was a star host – but at least Bill fucking O’Reilly got a long-overdue public humiliation. I’ll take it.

  • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

Why does the woman (or man if they’re the ones being harassed) have to leave the job because the boss is doing something illegal?
Actually, the most common kind isn’t the Bill O’Reilly quid pro quo kind of harassment. It’s the hostile work environment type. Since it may involve several employees, it can be tougher for the person being victimized to deal with it.

  • BearLeft

Why is CNN pimping this white trash in the first place? What’s newsworthy? Dumbshit says dumb shit! WTF? Must be CNN’s revenge on society for not having enough bombs exploding this week.

  • Paperless Tiger

I worked a lot of different jobs, and, from what I’ve seen, most employees put up with all sorts of harassment all the time, not to minimize sexual harassment, which I’ve also seen. My thing is, one of the main functions of government is providing minimum standards for labor/management relations. That’s why the right wing obsession with ‘government as business’ — actually just an extension of corporate power — is so wrong to me. It should be a neutral arbitrator. With Trump and his corporate cronies running the government, workers rights are gonna get trashed, which ultimately affects wages. Last time that happened, with Bush, it led directly to an economic crisis.

  • ANNG14

    Just go away Sarah.

Please please please throw this woman into the Bering Sea. What the hell are these people thinking when they put her on TV and actually let her open her stupid, ignorant mouth?

Yeah, why can’t these harassed women get some brain addled old senator to offer them a VP slot and then proceed to scam a significant portion of the American population out of their retirement cash. Then they can hang out with slim balls at the White House. Pigs is pigs and Palin is a pig.

  • Shawn Renee Ernoehazy

She has no idea. My very first job at 18 at a McDonald’s; the owner came in and told me I needed to smile more, “we hired you to work the counter because you are pretty.” Many years later, a coworker who lead me to believe he was my supervisor made many passing remarks that were creepy, the final straw was when I asked where a file was and he directed me to a cabinet on the wrong side of the office, then “must be the next one,” and when I finally find it in the last one he says, “I just like to watch you walk around in those jeans.” The solution in HR was to separate our work space (at one point leaving me alone in a space for four with a window facing the rest of the office), and even though we still worked on the same projects, we had to communicate by email only. Once I complained, and the “investigation” began, other women told me about how this guy was also super creepy to them. They all refused to say anything for fear of losing their jobs. I did not lose my job for many years after; and creepy dude apologized. He even asked me for guidance on behavior.

    • Truly Madly Derply

I have dealt with my unfair share of harassment, also, too, and not just from men. The stuff that really infuriated me was thrown by female superiors; on more than one occasion my immediate supervisor referred to me, in the presence of other co-workers, as a “Barbie.” Once I was confronted by a woman who had interviewed me during the hiring process and was a longtime employee of the company–it was right after I’d finished a presentation to 2,000 fellow associates on a weekly sales call. I was getting off the elevator and she was standing there, surrounded by several of my colleagues; she said “You sounded so SEXY on the call, Judy.” Fantastic to know, because that’s what I was aiming for. Too tiresome to even think about let alone enumerate all the BS with MEN. Maybe the women, like Palin, who turn it to their advantage and use it as a stepping stone, have the (or an) answer to a ubiquitous dilemma.

  • ConnieHinesDorothyProvine

Can this woman just disappear off the face of the earth already?

  • akita96th

I bet Palin experienced sexual harassment many times on her way to prime time…She probably used them as much as they used her….She won’t admit it because she is an opportunist and a fraud which pretty much describes the GOP party of ass bags. She thinks sexual harassment is just another stepping stone to move up the ladder to fame. Deep down I bet she doesn’t care one way or another…she doesn’t care about anyone else but Sarah.
