“Morning Joe” explained it this morning. Because Democrats didn’t win, they lost. And because Republicans didn’t lose, they win. Because when it comes the world, which is apparently big Republican coin, heads, Republicans win, tails, Democrats lose.

      /headdeskslam

      • h4rr4r

I think one issue here is keeping momentum. Having it go to a runoff favors republicans because their voters tend to have uh, free time to vote.

      • puredog

Well, there may be some truth to that. I assume turnout was massive. It will have to be JUST as massive in the general, and the Dems may need to add voters if the GOP electorate coalesces. And it may be that, since Ossoff’s Dem rivals got vanishingly small numbers of votes, there’s not a lot of headroom left there. So I wouldn’t go pocketing this seat just yet, especially when the GOP starts taking the race more seriously and pours the dirty tricks into Georgia where the ordinary voter is, how shall I put this, perhaps particularly susceptible to such things.

        • Al Swearengen

I’m not pocketing anything, it’s just the rightwing bias inherent in the media’s analysis of the vote. Due to decades of rightwing working-the-refs.

    • Msgr_MΩment

That 20% share of the vote is looking really bigly, boss.

    • Oblios_Cap

      Dumbass twats what?

    • h4rr4r

    http://www.space.com/36514-asteroid-2014-jo25-earth-flyby-slooh-webcast.html

An asteroid will make a close flyby of Earth today (April 19), and the Slooh Community Observatory will be tracking the space rock’s journey live.

During the close approach, the asteroid will be traveling at about 73 miles per hour (117 kilometers per hour) and will come to within 4.6 times the distance between Earth and the moon, or about 1.1 million miles (1.6 million km).

    • Oblios_Cap

      Giant Meteor 2017!

    • From Russia with Love

“During the close approach, the asteroid will be traveling at about 73 miles per hour (117 kilometers per hour)”

Per hour? Per second, maybe? That’s what the article says but it sounds wrong.

      • From Russia with Love

Somebody missed a few zeros: If you are looking at the correct time and direction, the asteroid will appear as a very slowly moving “star.” Although its distance from us will make the space rock appear to move slowly, it is in fact traveling though space at a speed of 75,072 mph (120,816 km/h).

      • puredog

It may be moving slowiy, but if it were to get into earth’s gravitational field, it’d be 32 ft per second per second all the way down. But I suspect you’re right.

      • wait! what?

        It is.

        But they fixed it.

During the close approach, the asteroid will be traveling at about 73,000 miles per hour (117,000 kilometers per hour)…

        • From Russia with Love

It’s funny, I checked one other news source that had the same misinformation. A Brit paper, I think.

          • wait! what?

It’s a bit worrysome. For posterities sake it would look really bad if NASA’ s last posting was:

Former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson has waded into the hotly disputed French presidential elections on behalf of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Anderson is a high-profile supporter of the Wikileaks founder and has visited him several times in the embassy in London.

“I just want to know what can be done for him? UN said release and compensate him twice now,” she wrote in her blog in March. “No one is listening.”

But Christie, entering into his last eight months in office, often seems happier and more focused than at any point since the Bridgegate scandal broke, several people close to him say. He is again taking on an ambitious agenda in New Jersey, trying to buttress and shape his once-enviable legacy.

Once-enviable legacy? He sold scrap from a grave site for votes and threw his constituents under one of the buses he stopped repairing while he toured the country with another state’s team. The only thing enviable about Christie’s performance is the lengths the national political press were willing to go to burnish his reputation.

That, he apparently never completely lost.

    • Jeffery Campbell

I live in NJ and everything, everything, about Chris Christie is irredeemably loathsome.

      • Carpe Vagenda

        North or south?

        • Jeffery Campbell

North. Bergen County – please don’t hold that against me. I’m southern by upbringing. Wait…don’t hold that against me either. I was born Guam – let’s go with that.

          • Carpe Vagenda

Nah. I’ve had family in Bergen County since forever. I’m right across the river from you.

          • Jeffery Campbell

            Well, howdy neighbor.

The laughter of the enlisted men and women of the Virginia division of the Atlantic Fleet can be heard echoing through out the fine drinking establishments of Ocean View. If you want something done right, you don’t go with the West Coast guys. Just my humble, unbiased opinion.

Nice move, Donnie. Talk about cheeseheads – clearly his is full of rancid Stilton.

WTF with the carrier thing? See, this is what happens if you habitually lie to people. You go and make a little mistake, like saying the carrier is going to North Korea when it is really going to Australia, and when you say it was just a mistake, nobody believes you, because you have this habit of habitually lying. Normal people learn this lesson by 2nd grade.

So we have Nazis being treated like their viewpoints are valid and deserve respect, even when schools, police and protestors warn they will cause violence… and prosecutors with recorded evidence against defendants refusing to do all they can to protect a battered woman and her child, and a Judge who won’t even bother to listen.

okay I’m a terrible procrastinator, can anyone tell me of an affordable way to have one of these color printed and available by Saturday? The low cost online poster printer would charge an arm and a leg on shipping and the local FedEx starts with charging an arm and a leg.

      • Carpe Vagenda

        Kinko’s?

        • PersianOregano

they seem to be synonymous with FedEx in my neck of the woods, I think I’m going to just go the handmade route

      • Pretty much every graphics program can be tweaked so you can print an image out in sections. These particular files are in PDF format, and Adobe makes it easy to print them out in “Poster” format – even including an adjustable overlap. Shouldn’t be hard to print one out so it covers four sheets of standard letter size paper, and then glue/tape them onto a sturdy backing.

Here’s what I don’t understand about the Richard Spencer thing at Auburn University. I used to work at a large public university, and there are people on staff at universities who book all the events, including speakers. Sometimes these events are centrally organized, and sometimes individual departments book events, sometimes student groups book them. But SOMEONE booked Richard Spencer as a speaker at Auburn University. Who was that person? What was that person thinking? What kind of idiot is that person? If you book a white supremacist to give a speech at your university, I think it kinda follows that there will be a public disturbance.

Exposure to different ideas? Trying to dodge the accusations of everyone on campus being special snowflakes who can’t handle anything they don’t agree with? Stupidity? I got nothing for this.

      • Angela Ruzzo

Exposure to new ideas is one thing. Deliberately booking a speaker with a history of inciting or provoking riots is another thing. It’s not impossible that this kind of thing is done on purpose, i.e. Invite controversial speaker, wait for riots to occur, then complain about riots occurring and violations of free speech, therefore achieving political agenda. I’m not saying this is what happened. I’m saying it’s possible.

        • shivaskeeper

I was trying to come up with what the spin was going to be. Nazi’s have no ideas that anyone should have to be exposed too. They have no point of view that should be compromised with for any reason.

I honestly can’t think of any good reason to invite a Nazi to speak anywhere for any reason unless it is to ridicule it off the stage. If I was CT minded I would also think this was a deliberate provocation, bit then I ask, who benefits? Who is going to stand up and say the Nazi should have been allowed to speak, but the dirty libtards wouldn’t let it happen? So, yeah, no idea who thought this was a good idea.

I can guarantee you the CinC gets a daily brief about where the various Naval groups are. Since they move around and it’s kind of important. IIRC didn’t he tweet he ordered the carrier group to the Korean Peninsula as well?

Either he lied about that (I know, I know, unthinkable), an entire carrier group just ignored his order and is heading elsewhere, or the CinC has no idea what the military is actually doing or what it’s for.

    • Shibusa

Pretty sure it’s this: The CinC has no idea what the military is actually doing or what it’s for.

    • phoenix00

      You’re assuming CinC attends briefings.

      • shivaskeeper

No. I am not. The briefings are given whether he is there or not. The assumption I would make is that even if he was there and actually paying attention he wouldn;t know what any of it meant anyway.

I loved the report that the reason the carrier battle groups wasn’t off the coast of NK was because there was “miscommunication” between the Pentagon and the Trumphouse.

Or perhaps it *is* time to invoke the 25th Amendment….

According to Foreign Policy, the Afghans want more Moabs dropped. (Because the Taliban have been winning against the Afghan defense forces, probably.) One thing I thought y’all might be interested in, apparently the US military warned the locals ahead of time, which is great and awesome and everything we didn’t do in Mosul! Its behind a paywall, so I got a screencap of that section:
