Rachel Maddow has had it with your shit
Rachel Maddow has a NEWS.

Oh hello, Rachel Maddow has some news for us, wonder what she is going to talk about! Just kidding, we know what she talked about and it is Trump’s 2005 1040 form, or at least the first two pages. Here is the video!

9:02: This is the tweet what broke the internet.

Then Maddow tweeted that what she has is something from Trump’s 2005 1040 form. She says this was handed to a reporter (David Cay Johnston), and she does not know why. Also, that could be important to the story!

9:05: Whatever Maddow is about to say, the White House is taking it seriously, by which we mean chasing its own dick around the Oval Office. Yeah yeah yeah, we know they ALWAYS do that, but this is different.

9:08: Rachel Maddow, whom we love, is professor-ing us right now. She is mentioning how Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross is weirdly tied up in some of Trump’s weirdo real estate deals with Russians. Read more about it here, in this nice post we wrote about how “Obama people” hid all kinds of sexxxy intelligence news for people to find, on their way out of the White House.

9:12: Here is some more background on the screwy real estate deal Maddow is talking about, where a Russian oligarch paid Trump an ungodly sum of money for a mansion in Florida. It’s interesting!

9:14: God, Rachel we love you. SAY THE WORDS ABOUT WHAT THE THING IS. Or as Jonathan Chait put it:

9:16: We know Trump has gotten many moneys from creepy entanglements with mobster creeps around the world. Here is a thing she just mentioned, about the Azerbaijanis! And here is a thing about Trump’s weird connections to Alfa Bank in Russia, and also Deutsche Bank!

9:19: TAXES! Rachel says it’s good! Rachel went to commercial! Ugh, everybody go smoke a cigarette, no excitement just yet :(

9:22: OK, so here is a Daily Beast story about it. He made like $150 million that year and paid $38 million in taxes that year, mostly in the form of the Alternative Minimum Tax. By the way, 2005 is the year Trump married Melania, just FYI. Maddow says this tax return just showed up in David Cay Johnston’s mailbox, and that basically the White House has verified the return.

Wonder if Melania mailed this stuff to Johnston, just curious, no reason why.

9:26: Rachel Maddow confirmed that she is not #FakeNews, and pinched herself to prove it. Now everybody will pinch Rachel Maddow when they meet her, and she will get SUPER ANNOYED by that.

9:28: David Cay Johnston says we should be open to the possibility that Trump himself leaked this to him. COULD BE MAYBE!

Now will he leak his own Russian Pee Hooker video, not that such a thing could possibly even exist?

9:32: YUH HUH.

We really could see Trump leaking his own tax returns and then using that as a reason to yell at the media, but also to try to control the story. Or it could be Melania. We believe those are the “clients” we are dealing with right now!

Anyway, commercial again, what are you Wankets making for dinner tonight?

9:37: A desperate nation cries out for the pee video:

9:40: So, we are on Team This Actually Is Important, and also Team This Is Just The Beginning, but a timely reminder from Hillary Clinton’s press dude:

Don’t get distracted! We will figure out the taxes thing in due time, oh yes we will.

9:42: All the Wonkette seekrit chatcave agrees that the laugh David Cay Johnston did a few minutes ago was weird and probably frightened all our dogs.

9:45: Best former congressional tweeter of all time John Dingell, everyone!

For real, while you are all paying attention, LET’S DO TALK about Trump and Paul Ryan’s “healthcare” plans, and also that weird story about how Trump did an executive order to “reorganize” the Executive Branch, which to many kinda looks like they mean “destroy” the Executive Branch. Big stuff!

9:52: We sure are glad Dead Breitbart is taking all this in stride:

9:53: David Cay Johnston’s website is crashed and Rachel Maddow’s website is crashed, but that’s OK, you only need one website, and it is called Wonkette. Hey, if you like how we jumped into action and liveblogged Rachel with you, you should give us a lil’ donation, as we are ENTIRELY reader-supported! Or a big donation! Or buy some snazzy liberal merchandise!

10:00: OK, we are wrapping up! We will see what this leads to, now won’t we? But maybe Trump leaked these two pages to distract us from something else! But Rachel Maddow is smiling like she just did something really big, so maybe that means a hell of a lot more is about to come out.

Anyway, thanks for joining your Wonkette this evening, scroll up and hit those donation links, follow us on Twitter and Facebook and tip your bartenders!

    C’mon, Rachel!
This is not a “Chopped” or “American Idol” finale.

  • DL

The man with so little to hide that he literally had to part with a decades old tradition of revealing his finances as President because, gosh, there’s nothing to see!

  • JoeChristmas

“I think nobody knows more about taxes Russia than I do, maybe in the history of the world. Nobody knows more about taxes Russia.”

  • Apple Scruff

So is Rachel going to be Woodward/ Bernstein? Or Geraldo?

      AOT,K

    • Jeffery Campbell

      Oh, God, not Geraldo!

    • Wild Cat

The end result will always be Al Capone’s Vault. In the most cynical sense.
And in 2017, 2005 is just fish-and-chips paper.

Did everyone find a live stream , I found one here

  • JurisGal

Rachel Maddow you are killing me, spill it!!

  • Shoto

    Bring on David Cay Johnston.

  • tapp_my_wire,please

Luv Rachel, but her wind up is longer than only Satchel Paige’s.

    • Wild Cat

It’s why we lose. Emotionalism wins in 2017.

    • Cousin Itt de La Résistance

New viewers need context. And, as a PhD, like Prof. Obama, you must build a case.

    • Apple Scruff

I hope she is doing it to make Trump shit some bricks.

      • tapp_my_wire,please

Maybe Obama can turn on the microwave cam to see if Donald is watching.

      • BosGrl

OMG, that’s right, he’s probably watching.

  • Persistent Demme

Why is she vamping like this?

I guess not everyone is as informed as us.
She seems to think she has to lay everything out.

    • Undocumented Skwerl!

It’s her way. She is methodical.

    • JurisGal

I think she’s got something good…. but I am getting annoyed. Maybe anxious is the better word.

      • Apple Scruff

If it wasn’t good, I doubt she’d be doing this. She is not click-baity like that.

    • Shoto

She always does this and on days like today, I find it to be especially tedious.

    • anon_the_great

      Relax. It’s comin’

    • Villago Delenda Est

I’m afraid it’s what Rachel does.

    • Rachel Book Harlot

She’s setting up why this information is important.

  • gullywompr

Burying the FUCK out of the lede, ain’t she?

    • Wild Cat

    • Msgr_MΩment

If your tax returns promise lasts more than four months….

    • SayItWithWookies

      Not this election, necessarily.

  • SnarkON

Everyone should know that Maddow did not break this story. The story broke at David Cay Johnston’s new nonprofit news organization DCReport. Link to the story is here, though I think the site has crashed: https://www.dcreport.org/2017/03/14/taxes/

    • Suse

She gave him credit and he’s going to be on the show, as well as O’Donnell’s.

  • Suse

    I, for one, like Rachel’s set-ups.

    • Wild Cat

Yeah, but today’s new isn’t a Robert Bresson film, Suse, sadly.

      • Thiazin Red

Nothing is sadder than Bresson films.

    • BosGrl

So do I. I like the history lesson and/or context so we know why what she is reporting is important.

    • Rachel Book Harlot

I watched her for the first time last night because someone here was kind enough to post a vid. At first I was like, oh my god already. But then afterward I was really happy she had done that set up at the start. The whole report blew my mind.

  • NorthernSaber

That Fuck Carlson (TFC) has some right-wing hack spinning like Greg LeMond that Rachel has nothing except buzzwords like “oligarchs”. Which of course means she had them by the throat, and TFC knows it.

  • chascates

I hope this is like the Murrow broadcast on McCarthy!

    • Randy Riddle

She’s heading in that direction – maybe not with this broadcast, but eventually.

  • Flashman

“After the big bang, matter cooled and coalesced, and some of it formed Donald Trump’s tax returns….” OK, Rache, let’s get down with it.

  • RobKanC

Omg omg. I am giddy like a school girl right now. Evan can’t update it fast enough for me.

  • Are we there yet?

    • snark-lurker

This tells me nothing. Ok so he’s paying AMT–but what other lines are being filled on the 1040?

  • SayItWithWookies

Sometimes I don’t mind a night of all foreplay. This is not one of those nights.

  • GAAAH!!!! COMMERICAL BREAK?!??

  • SayItWithWookies

  • zomg, Abjer whereever and Duetch AND Alfa???
Is she gonna show our president has a vested interest in foreign countries?

  • Sarah Connor

My son who normally sulks in his room is on the couch watching with us and just told me to shut up and stop yelling at Maddow so he could listen to her which is sweet, because I wish I didn’t have to save him from this.

    • Come with me if you want to live.
      Sorry sorry, the name

      • Sarah Connor

Well exactly! We do think it’s kind of weird that Arnold could help save us.

I’ve hacked into his toaster. I was going to hack into his toilet, but somethings we don’t want to know!

  • Jgb979

All those words just because she might release your taxes?

That’s like double the amount he made in his Obama is tapping my microwaves coke binge.

Gosh one might think they’ve got something to hide

    • BosGrl

And I was just thinking that now she is really on his radar. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tweet of his about her?

  • Persistent Demme

I just wanna wake up one day, and find out that he’s gone.

    • chascates

      Gone from this solar system!

    • JurisGal

Gone from the role as POTUS and gone to prison works for me.

    • RobKanC

      That is the dream

  • MmeLafarge

OMG. I can’t handle the suspense!

    • Wild Cat

      Geico commercials aren’t that exciting . . .

  • NorthernSaber

Is this like that foreplay stuff, with tons of build-up (and maybe being tied to a chair)? Am north of 50- think it used to work like that…

  • Cousin Itt de La Résistance

The Maddow Show has many new viewers. They need context and for a rational, evidential case to be built. She holds a PhD. I would do the same, if I were her.

      Agreed.

  • RobKanC

Noooooooo. Dang it.. Things like this makes me wish I had a cable subscription. But TWC can suck my fingers.

    • Tacoclamgenda

Did you see live streaming options below? One of them is working for me. Democratic underground I think. On bit of time delay maybe

      • RobKanC

I got the democratic underground link working. The other one was broken.

          • Apple Scruff

Hi! Is something going on? Let me tell you about my day . . . .

    • RobKanC

      Take a number!!

    • Tacoclamgenda

Sure, go ahead. We’re all ears.

      • Scrofula

Ok, On the subway today, a man came up to me to start a conversation. He made small talk, a lonely man talking about the weather and other things. I tried to be pleasant and accommodating, but my head hurt from his banality. I almost didn’t notice it had happened, but I suddenly threw up all over him. He was not pleased, and I couldn’t stop laughing.

    • Roni Resistance Raven

Did it involve anything unusual with your microwave?

    • tapp_my_wire,please

Rachel is about to dump your taxes to all of us.

      • Scrofula

I haven’t filed in five years.

Rachel: “For the record, the First Amendment gives us the right to publish this return. It is not illegally published. Nor are we fake.”

ARGH, I can’t start watching until the wife gets home. This sucks serious ass. I think I need to close out of my favorite Wonkie website, so I don’t get any surprises ruined.

Maddow just thanked the WH for acknowledging the return. lol

  • JurisGal

LOL, turning the table on Trump. Trump ” creates his own reality” . This reporter is hilarious.

  • Annie Towne

I just tuned into the live stream online, but it’s on the skating rink out front. Is it a commercial break?

  • SayItWithWookies

Johnson, about how he got the tax returns: “It came in the mail, over the transom.”

Soooo — not even a sentence into it, and he’s changing his story. Which is it — mail or transom? I’ve certainly never gotten any mail over the transom. Mighty suspicious there, Mr. Johnson.

    • HazooToo

THE FUCK IS A TRANSOM?! Sorry I feel SHOUTY RIGHT NOW

      • Suse

It’s those things over old doors that are basically windows that flip open.

        • I am mildly curious about how many others are in the mail right now XD

          • Msgr_MΩment

I’ll check my transom and let you know.

      • SayItWithWookies

It’s that window over your door. That hinges open.

      • BosGrl

It’s a term used for unsolicited communication.

      • Anna Elizabeth

“Over the Transom” is basically old skool for “what the fuck is this package?”

        • BosGrl

I was standing inside the damned door and it hit me on the head!

          • Anna Elizabeth

            XD Yep.

Trump definitely leaked these. There’s nothing shocking here and now Rachel is talking about nothing instead of hammering away at the AHCA.

  • tomamitai

Is Rachel doing math with that pen, or just scribbling for effect?

  • Gosala

    “Successful businessman” — false

“Excise, sales and employment taxes” — have nothing to do with income taxes, therefore irrelevant deflection

“Illegally published returns” — false, nothing illegal about it.

“The President will focus on his [agenda], which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans” — false, they are not reforms, they will benefit a few rich people (who are not particularly American) and punish most.

    • It’s funny how things like sales tax count when rich people pay them. If you point out that it’s not actually true that poor people don’t pay taxes because they do pay types of taxes other than income tax, like sales tax, that just gets ignored. But when rich folks pay sales tax, that counts.

      • HogeyeGrex

Especially when the poor and middle classes pay way more in sales and whatever taxes as a percentage of income than the rich do.

      • Gosala

More generally: what poor people do, feel, need, value doesn’t matter. Only rich people matter.

The sooner white poor and near poor people understand their interests lie with other poor and near poor powwow and not with rich white people, the better.

  • Nounverb911

Oh and your tax dollars shoveled the snow in front of Melania’s house this and built this cool toll booth too also https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/11c6d314d8d438b3a9aa369f7f5653213dfd44c25c2e463cd30cdd7d632748b2.jpg

WH gives Maddow an even bigger audience by preemptively releasing a statement about her show.

Im sure Trump will give her an even larger audience by tweeting about her

  • Jgb979

    Not to play contrarian:

But this sounds a lot like when Mitt got a guy to certify he paid taxes once that one time.

2005 doesn’t get us to Russian piss hookers (yet)

    • Closer than the 90’s tho….
Maybe in a few months we will have 2010?

      • Msgr_MΩment

And he’s still coasting on that $1B loss from 1995, ten years later.

    • Shoto

2005 was before the market crash, and if I had to guess, I’d bet Drumpf was forced to raise cash from some very sketchy sources to keep his pretend empire afloat. Let’s see the returns from 2010-2012, forward.

Unless it was him(/Bannon) leaking the only clean 1040 from the last twenty years, ie., the one where his carryover from that billion dollar loss ended.

You’re more than welcome here anytime. Was around 85 degrees here today and the water is getting warmer, almost warm enough to go without a wetsuit which means it’s time to get back in the water. I’ve always hated cold water and wet suits because I’m admittedly soft like that.

  • (Major_Major_Major)ly_Pissed

Recap from the RWNJ chuckleheads: He paid 38M$, so no tax dodge, libtart.

And from me, this answers none of the burning questions, and while he took advantage of every tax break possible, so does every single one of the 1%. This doesn’t really help to clarify his entanglements, and distracts from the very real possibilities of his Russo-kleptocrat ties.

Apologies to Rachel, but the merest tip of the iceberg is not enough.

    • Villago Delenda Est

Because the point is…the 1040 only tells a tiny fraction of the story…all those schedules are where the REAL story is: his sources of income, and who he owes money to.

      • NorthernSaber

Yeah, but over the water cooler tomorrow (and over on Faux News) middle-America will shrug and say “See, nothing there.”

        • Villago Delenda Est

You’re probably right. Most people do not file 1040 with acres of schedules. They don’t grasp the importance of the schedules, because the most they ever go is one or two. Most of them use 1040EZ and attach their W2s to them.

          • NorthernSaber

And so Spice-boy’s narrative tomorrow will be “he pays his taxes like every other American- let’s move on.” Many will. HORRIBLE decision by Rachel to go with this.

    • Juan de Fuca

I don’t think so. I think it’s interesting news and she’s an incredibly smart person. She knows what she’s doing.

      • Yr. Gma

        I hope you are right.

  • Wild Cat

Top of the NYT now. This makes the neo-nazi seem an honest broker:

BREAKING NEWS President Trump made a rare disclosure about his finances. He paid $38 million in federal taxes on income of $150 million in 2005. 9:28 PM

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

      We’ve been conned. God. Fucking.

      DAMMIT.

      • Wild Cat

I haven’t watched that network in two years. I think a guy named JoeMika pimped the neo-nazi and gave him billions in free publicity. And this dude, Phil Donahue….

    • SayItWithWookies

Except that his tax rate is lower than someone making $50,000 a year. And now people are curious where that $150 million came from.

      • True that. Was was the actual tax rate in 2005 on someone making 150 mil?

        • SayItWithWookies

          At least 33%.

          • he did not pay 33%

          • SayItWithWookies

Nope — that was the rate he should’ve paid, though.

      • Wild Cat

I’m sure Ozark Bob and Green Bay Sue know tax rates . . .

      • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

I’d say the opposite. Republicans and softheaded independents get to say now that he’s put out his taxes and look, no problems. We’ve been played.

        • Wild Cat

Yup. Especially when other millionaires pay less than $38M/$150M.

        • SayItWithWookies

Except this raises questions rather than answers them. Next questions: So how about 2006-2017? Where are the schedules? He’s got 500 business entities — let’s see the details. Did he pay off losing entities to make them look like they were making money? Did he get an inordinate amount of income for minor goods and services, like that house in Florida is an example of?

          • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Maybe, but Maddow was at best irresponsible by saying she had his tax returns, instead of a part of one of them. Now this whole thing looks like a nothingburger and a publicity stunt, and tars the rest of the requests for his taxes.

And even if it was genuinely leaked, Trump’s going to at the very least bury the rest of the returns in the Mojave desert, if not destroy them outright since they’re clearly not safe. This is a fiasco.

          • SayItWithWookies

Well she did tweet that it was the form 1040 from 2005. It still leaves people wondering what was in the rest of the entire package.

    • Shoto

And that’s why Drumpf leaked the document. That’s my guess, anyway.

Everyone’s trying to look for a NEON SIGN on Trump’s taxes.

It’s the little things that matter.

  • Persistent Demme

John Barron or President Bannon released this.
They using our own Rachel to distract us.
    Why?

    • Nounverb911

      He just bankrupted the country?

    • SayItWithWookies

To argue that his taxes are no big deal and wouldn’t reveal any information. But again, the question arises: where are the rest of them? Okay, you don’t have the stolen cookie in your left hand, Donnie. Now show us both hands at the same time.

    • Shoto

To jack the news cycle away from covering the monstrous GOP healthcare plan, for one. Plus, the return shows Drumpf paid some tax in that year. Let’s see the returns post RE crash.

  • Granny Sprinkles

I got so excited that I did a video chat with Canuckistan Sister who does not have MSNBC so she could watch with me. We ended up taking to each other’s pets. Then I just sent her a link to the Wonkette live blog.

Hi Canuckistan Sister! You should also read the comments which don’t exist too!

  • atlantaloves

holy fuck balls…thank you Miss Thang.

  • OneYieldRegular

Shamed? I thought Trump’s taxes were still under audit, so Vlad knows what’s in them.

    • Liberoid Ron

It doesn’t take that long to audit even the most complex returns. That’s why the IRS hires professional auditors, who know how to decipher them. And as I mentioned elsewhere, his taxes will be audited every year. IOW, it’s one more Drumpf lie on top of all the others.

  • M.E. Lawrence

Maybe now it’s safe to admit I don’t really care for Rachael?
    (Please don’t throw things)
She lost me for good talking about capital punishment and referring to midazolam as some completely new mysterious drug. It’s been routinely used esp. in kids surgery for years. I knew then she was a lot of hype.
But that’s just, like, my opinion, man.

    • persistently_resistant_gayby

That’s your opinion – but she never really goes after the glitzy glamorous stuff.

It’s the ones that take time to uncover

      She knows what she’s doing.

      • Scrofula

A single 2 second google search would’ve done her due diligence on her repeated drug citation.

        • Nick Scroggs

Huh, it’s on the WHO list of essential medicines, didn’t know that. Edit, although I think it was only recently started in executions to replace pentobarbital.

          • Scrofula

True. Pentobarb. is a barbiturate; midazolam (Versed) is a benzodiazepine, same as Xanax, Ativan, and Valium. It’s shorter-acting, so better in kids. Both barbs and benzos do essentially the same thing, and their ability to kill people is well documented.
Rachael repeatedly said, “Again, we don’t know anything about this drug . . . .” It hurt to hear her say that. She has a whole staff who couldn’t even be bothered to look.

In fairness, General Motors went insolvent in 2005. Of course, GM was bailed out (4 years later, after burning through its cash), not elevated to the Presidency despite losing an election by Constitutional flotsam that should have died in a fire long ago.

    • SighSperling

And the Russians bailed him out.

      For a price.

  • Undocumented Skwerl!

As far as the canned claims of a leak by the president, I’m having a hard time trying to figure out what purpose this would serve the White House. It just makes us hungry for MOAR!

      • “M”

I don’t listen to anything Snippy Spice says. All he does is lie and abuse people.

    • Rachel Book Harlot

It could be something he did before he releases some type of tax reform. Or, a big distraction from healthcare.

    • Gosala

      Canned claims…?

      YOU MONSTER!

      Oh….never mind.

    • artem1s

no way would he leak this. he’s way too vain about his wealth to voluntarily let this out in public. I think it’s more likely this is another round of the intelligence community telling him and the GOP to stop fucking with government employees who are doing their jobs.

    • “M”

      MOAR!

  • TJ Barke
    • Nick Scroggs

Wait, is that Trump or Maddow?

  • Apple Scruff

Maybe I’m not seeing the big deal? The White House does though, so there’s gotta be more to this than what I’m seeing.

    • Well below someone posted that these returns may indicate he was losing money in 2005.
Which is when he started doing his Republican Stand up Routine and investing in shady assed places even MOAR

      • Apple Scruff

Yeah, someone posted a Tweet below saying that. They all seem excited on MSNBC, though.

      • IOnlyLikeCats

I wouldn’t be surprised if the person who said he started hemorrhaging money and became a money launderer to save face/lifestyle was partially or completely right.

    • The Witch of Endor

I suspect the actual big deal is that someone got away with the complete 2005 return and, hopefully, will be leaking a couple pages/forms at a time.

  • Amelia

Hmm. I think, until we get more recent years, I’m on Team Trump Did It.

Not only was this a primo distraction from the Trumpcare dumpster fire, as far as the WH is concerned, they now have the right to blow off every question about taxes with bs about the sneaky sneaky media. There’s just little enough info, and what’s there is just positive enough, that this year was carefully chosen for release.

Also Comey is due to comment on whether the FBI is investigating Trump/Russia by Wednesday (according to CNN), so this could be a preemptive distraction from that as well.

    • OrG

They already blow off questions about taxes.

      • Amelia

True. But now they can blow them off and stick to that good old fuck the media message so “win-win.”

    • Mike Steele

Now, of course, Congress will be asked to delay Comey, et. al. and focus yet another taxpayer-funded investigation on how Rachel got the tax forms he obviously slipped under DCJ’s door. Jeez.

  • Rachel Book Harlot
    • THAT is what I have been mathing XD
Plus he paid less in taxes than he shoulda but /rich people loop holes

      • Rachel Book Harlot

I thought it was an important thing she did. Okay, it may not be a smoking gun, but I feel like it’s another breadcrumb on the trail. And maybe Trump did leak this in advance of some tax reform bill he has in the works, but I still think it raises important questions. And she raised them to a much larger audience tonight.

      • suziq

Without seeing the other parts of the return it is really hard to tell. Of course it is pretty well decided he is not nearly as rich as he says he is, but if all his money is doing real estate deals and he doesn’t draw a salary this might be realistic. Real estate is great for crazy write offs and hiding money which is why grifters like Trump are into the real estate game. You can tell some stuff from the 1040 but right now the websites that published it are all crashed so have to look later.

    • Apple Scruff

Basically, Kurt Eichenwald explained in 140 characters what I couldn’t get from Rachel in 60 minutes.

      • persistently_resistant_gayby

She tied it in context of her Russia reporting that she’s been doing recently.

        • CB

“She tied it in context of her Russia reporting that she’s been doing recently.”

…and I’d be willing to bet she did it quite on purpose.

They want to leak documents to prove how “honest” they are?

          Fine.

She generated a cliffhanger with those documents and used it to educate an unfocused public on how dishonest they are… and perhaps dishonest is too tame a word. It really does smell like treason.

      • BadKitty904

Well, I never have quite understood the whole “numbers” thing.

  • Gosala

    • Apple Scruff

      THAT sounds amazing…. OMG.

      • Gosala

It was amazing. My tummy came home upset and spitting acid.

        Now it is smiling contentedly

    • Liberoid Ron

How long do you have to cook a Blackberry to make it tender? Or is it the marinade you use?

      • Gosala

Blackberries are born tender. Cook them with the tenderloin, about 40 minute depending on the size. The blackberries break down and infuse their flavor into the meat.

        • Liberoid Ron

… I suspect my feeble attempt at a joke here has misfired…

      The bipartisan committee then disbanded.

    • “M”

Thank you. I think all the jaded people are upthread.

  • omg my local news said Trump released them, because Rachel was gonna leak,

Edit: GAHHH and they repeated the lie that it is illegal without saying no it is not

    • SayItWithWookies

Oh, lordy. Did they also say Assmouth has only been hiding them because he’s embarrassed about saying how much he gives to the widows and orphans fund, too?

      • They did mention he “broke” with tradition by not releasing them.
        That is bold for Richmond

    • persistently_resistant_gayby

      I can’t even.

    • BadKitty904

That makes no sense. How would he have known which taxes to release unless he already knew what info Maddow had?

      • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Well, they could have found what pages were missing. Or they were the ones who leaked it in the first place.

        • BadKitty904

My point is the latter – did the White House incriminate itself by saying they released first?

          • artem1s

could be that MSNBC gave him an opportunity to comment? It’s pretty standard journalistic procedure to call ahead and give the target of your hit piece an opportunity to tell their side? maybe that’s how he knew which returns?

          • BadKitty904

            Fair enough.

          • suziq

The reporter that got the 1040 and MSNBC sent it to the White House to verify or dispute that it was real. They did not say fake, they said “look how much he paid in taxes!”

          • suziq

            White House incriminates self-not news.

          • rebecca

no, she would have called them for comment like a grownup.

          • That is what I figured. Was more my local news saying the white house “released” the information when they did not so much release any info as try to band aide on what was being published

  • Nick Scroggs

Well, I’m waiting for more of the returns. And either the Trump administration leaked his own tax returns, or has very poor security in keeping people away from the Client Copy.

    • tomamitai

My boss once left his tax return in the copy machine, boy did he look unhappy when I gave it to him!

      • Ωbjectifier

        Let’s discuss my performance evaluation.

        • suziq

haha, that would be a fun day at work!

  • Nounverb911

Ny times is reporting it now… it’s starting

    • Nounverb911

      WSJ and Bloomberg too

      • What, that….he paid some bucks?

        • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

Well remember, he said not paying taxes was “smart”. And, per his 1995 return, he could have written that loss completely off and paid no taxes at all until 2013. So why is he paying taxes in 2005 if he could, legally, not have to? Was he lying in the debates?
There’s also the matter that $150 million is pocket change compared to the amount Trump claims he is worth. That alone is going to have him spewing venom for hours because Maddow et al are putting the screws to the one thing Trump cares about more than anything – his sense of wealth.

          • That is the part I think will resonate the most with the …others.
They are all gonna go ha ha libs nothing there! And then tomorrow they will be all…wait, 150mil? I thought he had billions?

          • rebecca

that’s one year income though. he still “could” have billions.

          • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

He “could”, sure. But I sure as shootin’ ain’t gonna bet the farm on it.

          • True true, but I do not think most folks think that way. Coupled with the last leaked return that showed a loss, it sure don’t look like Donnie be worth all he swears he is

          • LadyLaz

Well maybe this is a smarter move than I think it is on Maddow’s part.

          • “M”

It landed in David Johnston’s mailbox, and Johnston’s been covering him for 30 years.

Don’t lay it all automatically on the lady reporter, now.

  • ariel_gee_398

So, to put on my tin foil hat for a second. The loss he declared in 1995 could have offset 18 years of income. Donnie bragged about not paying taxes because S-M-R-T, but this proves that is not true, he did pay taxes. If, as rumored, Donnie has ties to/started laundering money for Russians in the mid-aughts, would it make sense to take a more conservative strategy with your taxes (and actually pay some federal income tax) in an attempt to avoid scrutiny of your finances?

    • Liberoid Ron

At his income level it’s going to be scrutinised every year. If stuff’s being hidden it’s being hidden a little more cleverly than that.

  • Gosala

Fighting Trumpcare is important no doubt. But it’s not an either/or thing. We can continue to fight Trumpcare and demand a full disclosure of Trump’s taxes and ….everything else because there’s lots more of us than there are of them.

    • I think they mean don’t let them dictate the narrative and allow us to be distracted. WE can focus on more than one thing, but if they keep throwing it back to the squirrel it gets tiresome

      • Gosala

That I can go with, especially if we can turn every squirrel they let loose into another cord with which to tie them into knots.

    • Persistent Demme

      Yes.
Just because your average T***p supporter can’t walk and chew gum, doesn’t mean they have to project those limitations on us!

  • puredog

My sense of this, very superficially, is that Trump is behind it. That in 2005 he paid kind of shit-ton of taxes — $38M, peeps! — and he wants us all to know that he is a Bigly Tax-Paying Dood. If this hypothesis is correct, his total taxes paid for say 2000-2016 (except 2005) would be like $0. That’s just my guess. It’s a distraction, nothing more. He had to go back 12 years, people, to find a payment that was impressive.

    • OrG

It’s only a distraction if we get distracted.Otherwise it’s an attempted distraction.

    • Andy_Kreiss

      That doesn’t seem unreasonable.

But I like that Mr. “I love WikiLeaks!” is suddenly all ” This stuff was STOLEN!! Sniffff!!!”

  • Latverian Diplomat

Don’t get distracted? Can’t we talk about more than one thing at a time? With Trump, there’s so much wrong we kind of have to, don’t we?

Let’s not fall into the CNN model of public discourse. “OMG, a plane crashed in the ocean location unknown, drop everything else for two months!”

    • Nick Scroggs

It fell into a black hole!

    • Once again, WE can do more than one thing at a time.
However, THEY will keep throw up desperate liberals and taxes so methinks they are saying don’t let em change the narrative

      • Latverian Diplomat

I agree, in the sense that the real problem is our dumb media and not this or any other particular story.

  • Villago Delenda Est

What are his sources of income?

When you have a rental property, you have to disclose your income from the property. There’s a schedule for that. You don’t see any sign of it on the 1040 itself, just a number, not what it’s from. I’ve had to file a schedule for rental income, a couple of times, when I rented out my condo when I was deployed.

Who does he owe money to?

If you claim interest as a loss, you have to tell us where it went. In my case, it was to my mortgage holder…they kindly provided me with a form that provided all the information, because THEY needed to report the income they received from me via interest.

We don’t have that.. the 1040 is just a summary of his income/interest. Most Presidents don’t have that much to relate…royalties on books, gains/losses on investments, and so forth. Donald’s taxes are far more complex…he’d list every rental property he has income (or loss!) from. That’s a lot of paper.

    • Even without the schedule, it should reflect on the dividend and whatever lines- no we do not get EXACTLY where it came from, but the sum should be reported there.
Bottom line, dude is NOT a billionaire and NOT smart enough to “not pay taxes”

    • tomamitai

I read somewheres on the intertubes that every venture or deal he does is in its own separate LLC, so that’s got to be a HELLUVA lotta paper!

      • Villago Delenda Est

Precisely, and each LLC has its own taxes as a “legal person” to deal with. Payments from that LLC to Donald would show up on both the LLC’s taxes, and Donald’s, in one of the schedules.

The schedules are where the story is. The 1040 only gives us an overview, doesn’t go into the gory details.

        • Right, but they would STILL have to be factored in to those two pages.
Which means for all of his great terrific huge beautiful business, he is claiming he earned 150mil in 2005.
          Not more.
I mean I am no tax genius, but the TOTAL sum before deductions has to be listed somewhere, non?

          • Villago Delenda Est

Should be right on the 1040. Or, it’s hidden in the schedules. But it is documented. The 1040 is just not the place where you find all that out. All you have is his income, not how he calculated that income, and he paid taxes on that income figure.

          • Right but what I am saying is, with all his vast holdings, everything he claims he has and gives him money and makes him billions….
dude only crested 150mil. To us big, to people he is trying so desperately to emulate, peanuts

          • Villago Delenda Est

Oh, agreed. This guy isn’t that great a businessman if he claims $10 billion in assets and his total taxable income is $150 million. Which is why looking at the schedules is key to all this.

          • suziq

There is a return, of sorts, for each business. If he funnels profits to his kids or somewhere else it may not migrate to his 1040.

    • suziq

      Over the last 50 years?
I think Lawrence is actually doing a better job than Rachel explaining what this means and why it is important. Yes, there is a lot of shit going on but there are more people that want the truth out than there are loyal trumpsters that don’t care about his taxes. For example-Trump is trying to get rid of the Alternative Minimum Tax. If he gets rid of that he will be paying 2-3% per year on his taxes which is one thing this return showed. That IS important. If they can keep the focus on things that count it will be very good.

  • Latverian Diplomat

He made like $150 million that year and paid $38 million in taxes that year, mostly in the form of the Alternative Minimum Tax.

That sounds like the AMT doing what it is supposed to do.

    • BosGrl

Exactly and Drumpf wants it repealed.

  • Shoto

Ask DCJ to speculate on POST RE crash Drumpf, please. 2008 – forward.

Ugh- Hannity is really on the offensive, and Rachel’s overreach tonight really allows him to muddy up the water. Millions of people just said “Yep, nothin’ there” and went to bed- and all the “yeah, buts…” in the World won’t get them to pay attention again.

    • IOnlyLikeCats

I actually disagree. I think a seed of doubt has been planted.

      • Bub the Hoohah! loving Zombie

I love you, but…anyone who doesn’t have a doubt SEQUOIA growing through their fuckin’ roof by now is utterly fucking hopeless.

    • Can see that.
Can also see millions of people going “He only made 150 million????”

      • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

That only really matters to us.

To his followers in derpistan, it doesn’t matter if he made 150 million or 150,000. That just means he made more than them and that makes him awesome.

        • I do not think so. He is supposed to be their golden billionaire. He is not a billionaire it sure seems

        • LadyLaz

          This.

We eggheads may study it in detail. No one else cares. 140 characters. That is all you have.

          • ok then, how is this:

150mil? So he is not a Billionaire? 38mil in taxes? So he is not a smart businessman? SAD

    • BadKitty904

That was my first thought. But then the GOP shills are going to continue lying about Donnie’s taxes no matter what, so what have they gained?

      • NorthernSaber

Their gain is in the minds of millions of center/right voters who might, just might, have started to think that is something to this Russia stuff after all. The LAST thing our side needed do was give them any cause to say “See, Mildred? I told you there was nothing there- Trump paid a ton of taxes, just like he said he had, so everything else must be on the up-and-up as well.” Rachel needed to sow serious bi-partisan doubt last night. She didn’t.

    Distraction from Comey testifying tomorrow??

Without the schedules this is all worthless. Furthermore, the funky accounting I can guarantee is in his S-corp.

    • tomamitai

Is he testifying publicly, or is it another one of those closed door things where the democrats come out angry as shit but can’t say why?

      • Jenny

I think Donald leaked it; otherwise the White House wouldn’t have been so prepared to attack the story as irrelevant. I think the data is meaningless. I think the 1040 was carefully selected to have nothing outlandish. I don’t think this is a real story. They’re going to claim they played Rachel.

    • persistently_resistant_gayby

The 1040 forms are marked “Client Copy”…

      • Maybe that is what she was grinning about?
Cause now everyone is gonna go “where did it come from???” And tomorrow after the white house screams about leaks and illegals she can go “oh, it came from the whtie house”

        • Snopes Shop

She’s always grinning and it never stops Trump from showing up in the WH for another day.

    • BadKitty904

The timing smells highly suspicious, too, considering what all is going on tomorrow.

    • Rick Hill

Of course, this is the one thing they are proly prepared for, someone leaking the taxes.

    • Rachel Book Harlot

It’s interesting that they knew exactly the figures that would be discussed. I don’t know many people who can remember exact figures from previous returns like that.

      • suziq

The reporter that first published, and Rachel Maddow, both forwarded it to the WH to ask if it was real and if they had comments. So they knew what was out there. And by saying-see he paid $38 million in taxes! they were verifying it was real.

        • Rachel Book Harlot

          Ooooh! Thanks, Suziq! :)

      • “M”

The taxes keep escalating, though. The document said $36M, the WH statement said $38M, DJTJr, who just HAD to weigh in, said $40M …

  • Villago Delenda Est

Here’s the thing…the vast, vast majority of Americans never deal with taxes in this depth. Most of us have, at best, three or four sources of income: our wages, interest from bank accounts, perhaps some capital gains from a stock sale. If the only thing you do is attach a W2, report what was withheld, compare that to the tax table, and find it’s more than you actually owe, in four to six weeks you get a refund. I’ve only tasted the depth of the detail one must delve to when you get involved with multiple income streams. This is why you have tax accountants who do nothing but calculate all this shit, because for most of us, we’re too busy working or raising kids or standing guard in snowdrifts to even think about it. And for most of us it’s just not that difficult!

    • Zippy W Pinhead

Good Lord I wish mine were that easy

    • tomamitai

Taxes are that complex for the rich because they’ve lobbied for so many loopholes, they want it to be hard to figure out what they’ve got.

  • Shoto

    Uday Tweetered. Alert the media.

  • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

A typical Twat I’ve seen from news outlets: “BREAKING: White House releases President Trump’s tax information ahead of TV report.”

Despite it being grudging, extremely selective, and incomplete, they actually went with that headline. I’m now 100% this was leaked by Trump.

  • Nick Scroggs

Now I’m reminded of GTA 4, one of the later missions, where you have to protect an anti-Russian Mob politician who’s in the pocket of a dying Italian gangster. Or another where said gangster is chatting it up with a CIA operative in his hospital room. Man that was a great game, better than V I say.

  • persistently_resistant_gayby
    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

      Oh ffs.

EDIT: I don’t know about everyone else, but that whole buildup Maddow was doing smacked of getting a really big bday present, in a really big box. And then the person who gave it to you asks you to wait while they stream out a whole lot of reasons why it isn’t actually as great as it looks.

      • Tacoclamgenda

That’s her style. Always. Yes, sometimes it’s quite annoying but she makes sure to make her case using what. Can seem like disparit facts. She show how pieces fit together. No one else is that thorough on TV.

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

That’s fine, but you can’t lead with a Twat like “We’ve got Trump tax returns. Tonight, 9pm ET. MSNBC.

(Seriously).” and then have two pages of one of them. Then not only do we feel let down, we feel conned. Which I’m still not convinced we’re haven’t been.

    • Gosh yes.
She was putting it all together and giving all the background and people were just all GET TO EEET
Then got all mad they did not get the ta da they wanted because they were too busy screamin at the TV to GET TO EEEET to hear all the connections

    • mmm. Seems to me he declared too low maybe

      • ariel_gee_398

I assume he pays people a lot of money to reduce his effective tax rate as much as possible, and given his aggressive strategy in litigation, it seems odd that he wouldn’t take a similarly aggressive approach with tax avoidance. It just seems weird. Perhaps just more evidence in the “Donnie leaked these to make himself look better” column.

  • Latverian Diplomat

If this was a Trump leak, then in all his thousands of pages of tax returns, these are the two that make him look the best?

    • BadKitty904

Maybe because he colored within the lines?

      • Latverian Diplomat

“My penmanship on these was just great. The best. Really terrific.”

    • persistently_resistant_gayby

      Hence, the breadcrumb.

Trump may have played this – but this will just get folks to search for the rest of the 2005 tax returns.

  • Apple Scruff

Well, considering both President Pussygrabber and his son Ugly Patrick Bateman are stressing how Trump is “a successful businessman”. So I’m guessing that’s why they’re so mad, that these pages reveal he is actually a shitty one.

    • YEP XD
Now the world needs to tweet back “Gosh you suck so bad! lolz How much money did you lose in 2005 anyway? Is that why you started whoring yourself out on that laughable apprentice show? Is that when you sold out to the Russians?

  • Ok, so, when can we start demanding the long form tax return?

    • Liberoid Ron

Personally I believe that he pays taxes in Kenya.

  • Keith Taylor

With regard to Trump’s Russian ties and so forth … I know I keep repeating this … I do completely believe Russian hackers got into the Democratic AND Republican electoral computer systems during the campaign, but I doubt they manipulated them to influence the vote count. Too likely to be detected, and besides, Vlad the Impaler — excuse me, Putin — probably soon realized he could leave the dirty manipulative electoral tricks up to the GOP in smug safety. Interstate Crosscheck, voter suppression through voter ID requirements, old Uncle Tom Cobley and all …
But Trump’s involvement with Russian loans of laundered Russian dirty money are another thing. Three cheers, Rachel Maddow, for pushing that forward in a good deal of verifiable detail. Okay, some of it is just inferred and needs investigation, official, in hard absolute stand-up-in-court legal terms. But there sure is a lot that can be inferred.
And I find it a believable thesis that Donald Trump is deep in crooked illicit Russian financial pockets, rattling around with the loose change, owned at least 83 per cent and subject to blackmail … and never mind the salacious, very possibly false, stuff about the pee hookers. That’s trivial anyway, even if it does appeal to our taste for creepy porn.

    • Roni Resistance Raven

The thing though is, something salacious like pee hookers is the only thing that might engage the miniscule attention span of Trump voters.

I don’t think they have the brain capacity for Russian connect-the-dots.

      • I think you give them too much credit.
Remember, these are the same people the Republicans have used, for decades, by just repeating the same thing over and over and over and over again.

I still fear Ms. Maddow may have been used, but if this kerfuffle was meant by TrumpCo. to distract us from their recent bullshittery and tomorrow’s doings, it failed. Badly. Per usual.

    • There are enough of us to pay attention to all the things.

    • Not to mention, once they hang themselves by repeating “Illegal release!!! ILLEGALLLLLLL” over and over she can go “Well, we got it from you”

      • BadKitty904

They’re quite capable of being just that stupid.

Your eyes must roll out of your head sometimes.

      • Panika MCD

sometimes, but it’s a rare thing and I got bourbon after that. back now.

    • ….whut? IN TEXAS?????
      Yeah. Not surprised XD

      • Panika MCD

most of it is county and city officials saying the bill is FUBAR.

        • wait wait wait, more than one is saying that you the people are A Sovereign Citizen?

          • Panika MCD

no: all the cities and counties are saying that hamstringing the counties is a shitty idea. a few property tax payers think they’re sovereign citizens and, “sheeet, y’all! I own 4 prepperties! do away with prepperty taxes altogether or let me vote in all the counties where I have prepperty!!!!” which were like 4 people before I got bourbon.

          • Damn.
So they wanna do voter fraud then?

          • BloviateMe

            I’m your Huckleberry.

          • Panika MCD

they wanna voter fraud gud. because: white male property owner–just like the founders intended.

          • BloviateMe

That makes me wish I didn’t get drug tested at work.

          • Rags

For my 10th birfday I got a deed to a square inch of a Texas ranch. I can haz votez now?

          • Panika MCD

I have about $15 stake in a tobacco farm in TN. so: no.

    • HazooToo

What are they like, in person? Do they give off that vibe, like, if you were alone with them or just standing too close, they could randomly stab you?

      • FukuiSanYesOta

        I bet they “feel” rapey.

        • HazooToo

With a voice like a creepy Uncle licking your ear.

          • FukuiSanYesOta

“Would you like to see some puppies?”

          • No. Do your balls want to meet my steel-toed shoes?

          • Panika MCD

hey! Austin Pets Alive! had puppies at the Pink Dome today to support my rep’s no-kill bill!

          • BloviateMe

“Creepy Uncle Licking Your Ear” sounds like the punchline to a Native American joke.

I’ll go sit in the corner again.

          • HazooToo

No doodling on the walls, while you’re over there!

          • Panika MCD

no. creepy uncle is the bill’s author–Sen. Bettencourt. when Tsarina Tic Tacs held the rally in Austin there were all sorts of interim hearings and yet Sen. Bettencourt was the only legislator (no statewides showed) to show up at the rally. hmmmm!

      • Panika MCD

state fire marshal said I couldn’t go in the room today. I’m about 3 blocks away.

        • HazooToo

          Wat? Why?

          • Panika MCD

because there was too many peoples. I’m at my office.

          • HazooToo

At least, due to recent events, it’s not ONLY the crazy people who show up to meet with politicians in vast numbers anymore.

          • Panika MCD

no. it’s “leave TX cities alone!”

    • Ωbjectifier

We the people are A Idiot. The dildo militia tried that one.

      • Panika MCD

somehow this asshole missed that. there was also the guy who wanted all property taxes abolished by the end of the session.

  • suziq

Haha, now Lawrence is talking about Breitbart throwing Ryan under the bus.

    • OrG

      That IS amusing.

  • Gosala

    From WaPo:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2017/03/14/report-trump-paid-38-million-in-income-taxes-in-2005/?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_trumptaxes-0936pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm_term=.b4d0af696329

President Trump paid $38 million in federal income tax in 2005 on more than $150 million, for an effective rate of 25 percent

    And

Last fall, the New York Times reported that Trump reported a massive $916 million loss in 1995, which enabled him to avoid paying income taxes for decades.

Is it me, or do these factoids contradict each other

    • Roni Resistance Raven

      Why yes, yes they do.

    • Pinkham’s Law

Not really. The 916 million is used to offset taxable income for up to 18 years. Once the offset is used up, it’s used up. If he managed $100 million a year, it would be used up in the 10th year.

      • Gosala

        Sorry, Pink, but no.

At the time, the orange one specifically bragged that he was a brilliant businessman because he had parleyed his massive losses into multidecadal write offs (a stupid claim).

Not that he could have, but that he did.

Fair’s fair, but bending over backwards is bad for the spine, if you know what I mean.

        • Pinkham’s Law

Ah! Please forgive me for responding to the factual situation, rather then the bogus crap that Trumpster spews.

You are correct, the claim that he avoided taxes for decades conflicts with the claim of paying taxes in 2005.

So, we’re both right, right? I like win/win, because I’m not a teabagger that thinks everything is a zero sum equation!

  • Hairstrike Alpha

Here’s how we know it came from Donnie: it’s only two pages, it’s not itemized and American Psycho is bragging. Watch the Twitter feed, Trump is so predictable- he will scream FAKE NEWS and threaten a lawsuit, then brag.

    • If he did it himself, or the white house, that info will be leaked right after he sticks his foot in his mouth.
      Time for more popcorn

    • Shoto

It also has “Client Copy” stamped on the return, which means it’s a, y’know, client copy.

  • WomanInThePersistence

Today’s words of wisdom from the White House:

    ” WHITE HOUSE MEMO:

President Donald J. Trump is committed to delivering relief to Americans struggling under the weight of Obamacare’s rising prices and onerous mandates. The President’s reforms will bring down costs and increase access to coverage for millions of Americans. It’s time to repeal the disaster known as Obamacare and replace it with a system that puts the interests of the people first.

    GET INVOLVED

President Trump wants to know how Obamacare is affecting hard-working Americans.
Share Your Obamacare Disaster Story With President Trump”

It’s astonishing how many lies are packed into this. It’s almost elegant in its way. So short, and so absolutely full of bullshit.

    • FukuiSanYesOta

      This couldn’t *possibly* backfire.

      • WomanInThePersistence

        That’s unpossible.

    • That one looks shorter than the same message from yesterday.

      • WomanInThePersistence

I just report it. And maybe the WH intern is tired.

        • Naw, they are some shady shifters and I like to sniff out conspiracies in my spare time.
I am just curious why, when these idiots are so lazy about everything else, they would shorten it down instead of copy paste.
I am wondering what they edited out because they were called on something

          • WomanInThePersistence

I can’t bring myself to do close textual analysis of this balderdash. Perhaps some bright young graduate student working on their dissertation in abnormal psyche might be up for that.

    • BosGrl

Deliver us, Trump, from Obamacare evil and grant us healthcare choice in our day.

    • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

i’ve said, they have fox news on in the lobby of our building. I arrive in the morning, take a smoke break soon after, take lunch a few hours later, an early afternoon smoke break, then finally leave early afternoon.

The 24M people who will lose healthcare was on EVERY time i walked by today. (I even asked hte security folks about it).

      • ButtercuptheHarelessRabbit

        Are they hiring? Sweet schedule.

        • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

    • boyblue123

These Drumpf pages almost always have a follow-up page for donations to his 2020 campaign

      • WomanInThePersistence

I refuse to include that in my nightly updates.

        • boyblue123

          ha…just sayin…

His online surveys lead to donation pages after you submit answers to the surveys

          • WomanInThePersistence

      ‘Bout damned time.

      • Liberoid Ron

I’d be happy to sign the papers as a disinterested third party.

    • Serai 1

Let’s hope he gets buried under stories of how the ACA saved lives.

      • WomanInThePersistence

You and I both know that he and his minions would ignore those stories.

  • Rachel Book Harlot
    • Liberoid Ron

P’raps this was part of the plan, then?

      • Roni Resistance Raven

        Mm hmm.

    • CeeQ

This whole “two page is not enough” thing is Trump’s long form birth certificate moment. LOL I am so loving this.

  • Nick Scroggs

If Trump gets impeached, who else wants to do a mass a cappella singing online to “Blow Me A Kiss” to him as he’s taken away? Edit, or how about “Always look on the Bright Side of Life”?

    • Why not “Hey, Hey (Goodbye!)” In the most joyous tones possble?

    • Roni Resistance Raven

I’ll blow him a kiss, right out of my asshole.

      • Liberoid Ron

Blowing him a trump, as the Brits would say.

    • WomanInThePersistence
      • Nick Scroggs

Because it wouldn’t be hard to say goodbye then.

        • WomanInThePersistence

He hums it at night in German.

          • WomanInThePersistence

Good grief, he barely speaks English. Although this does raise the interesting question – how would one translate “Yooooooge” into German? Or any other language, really? “Guuuuuuut” doesn’t quite capture it.

    • Liberoid Ron

The BFF would disagree. He’s a tax accountant and loves it. Hmm, I should ask him about this stuff on Sunday, he knows a fair bit of the US tax code as well.

    • yyyaz

The tax code itself is a larf riot, if you can read it. Tax policy, OTOH, is how things get paid for and by whom. Most importantly, the whom.

Here’s a pretty good way of summarizing Drumpf’s 2005 tax returns

    • TJ Barke

      Trump lied? Improssible!

      • boyblue123

He earned 1.5% on his supposed income in 2005 when savings account paid three times that

He also lost almost $1B in 1995 when you could blindly pick a stock and make money hand over fist. Also lost money in his Drumpf casinos while every other Atlantic City casino was raking in dough

        • Roni Resistance Raven

He really has the opposite Midas touch, doesn’t he?

    • Bub the Hoohah! loving Zombie

Not exactly news. Anyone who thinks he ever had a 10 bn net worth is a moron. Hell, his “net worth” has always been dependent on what HE believes his “brand” is worth, and you don’t get a return on nebulous shit like that anywhere.

  • Rachel Book Harlot

      • Gosala

        Dear, dear Shanzgood,

Please take care of yourself. If this is too much, turn it off for a while and find something good to enjoy: a cat, a piece of music, peach pie, or something.

      • Old Man Yells at Cloud

    • Serai 1

What with GOP cannibalism over AHCA debacle and upcoming public testimony on the 20th from Comey, et.al., see little reason to drop obviously WH leaks as ‘big bomb’ it’s not, as this only reinforces Team Trump victimhood scenario. Also, too, creates another SKWERL! Realize it’s crucial to dismantle Pres Bannon’s administration before he disrupts world order, but don’t want this to be Rachel’s microwave.

      • Shoto

Either Drumpf leaked it, or a person inside of a financial institution from which he was trying to borrow money at the time leaked it. Asking for returns on loan packages is SOP. Whatever the case, it’s mostly a Big Nothing. We must not take our eye off the ACA repeal ball. That’s the big story right now – at least one of them.

I’m sure of it. That orange fuck isn’t smart enough, but it reeks of Bannon.

I’m sure it was orchestrated by the Orangehouse. If it were from a disgruntled someone who had access to the whole thing they would have leaked the whole thing.

That said, if everyone points out how poor of a return it is on his supposed multiple billions, which means either he doesn’t have multiple billions or he’s bad a business, I bet we can get T^5 (Two am Trump Toilet Twitter Tantrum).

But Maddow’s scoop is still important for a number of reasons. Despite
being speculative, Maddow rightfully framed the story as being one about
what we don’t know (i.e. what Trump’s finances say about his
relationships with foreign governments) as opposed to what we do (i.e.
the figures on the two pages she proudly held up again and again). This

I wouldn’t be surprised. Look at it this way: “Hey, his taxes are out, he paid his dues and that should settle the matter.” His approval rating is bound to go up given that no one is going to figure out that, if he’s really worth $10B earning $150M is pretty shitty unless he didn’t declare everything, which would make him a criminal.

      • yyyaz

        Dr. Wellstone, I presume?
        1. Two pages of his taxes from 12 years ago are out. What is he hiding? (As if we wonkers don’t know.)
        2. Why is he hiding from 50 fucking years of what has become SOP for the highest office in the land?
        3. Pay attention, low-info voters. This is what happens when you don’t, erm, pay attention.

I was watching a perfectly good interview of Billy Gibbons by Dan Rather, and Mr. 798 says “something Rachel Maddow Trump’s taxes.” So we switched over to watch Ms. Maddow. As I listened to her talk to us like we are all five, and at length, she pulls out Trump’s 1040. In other words, a nothing burger with extra cheese. It was obviously leaked by Trump, and she and her guest were acting like they found the Holy Grail. Squirrel!

        • Zippy W Pinhead

See? He does so pay taxes. See? the libtard media really is out to get him. They stole his tax returns. It’s a tailor made distraction from the real issues and inoculates him against any further demands for more recent returns

          • OrG

            I don’t care about RWNJ’s minds.They’ve already decided.Fuck ’em.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

But they are loud and in this case can make a pretty good argument that this was BS. Lots of the people that need to wake up and pay attention will hear this and tune back out, labelling it more partisan mudslinging. We need those people to not only pay attention, but to grok the importance of what we’re telling them. Crying wolf over nothing is a piss poor way to do it.

          • OrG

            Valid point.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

we have to choose our battles wisely. this looked like a rope-a-dope from Bannon

          • Rachel Book Harlot

Zippy, this isn’t the end. This one story doesn’t end it all. There will be more to come and more failings from this WH. And there have been a lot of people making good points as to why this was actually important. I think if people want to tune out just from this, then it means they were looking for an easy way to do so from the start and nothing will wake them up.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

Naw, it means they are suffering from scandal fatigue and outrage fatigue and are too busy trying to keep their heads down and survive another day to worry about a political system they rightly feel they have little control over. One of our biggest conceits is assuming everyone is as politically aware and active as we are. Walk into any bar or sporting event or other gathering and start an extended rant about politics and you’ll see just how little people want to hear it. Most of them will roll their eyes, tune you out and try to find a way to get away from you as quickly as they can, if for no other reason they figure that someone just as obsessed about politics from the other side will hear it and rush over to start an argument.

To them, we sound like two drunks standing on opposite street corners screaming incoherently at each other for hours and all it does is hurt their ears and make them turn off the whole subject. While it’s important to get these people to engage, the way to do it is not by adding to the cacophony by shouting more. If you want them to listen, you better have something both important and interesting to say and you better be able to grab their attention in the first sentence or two, or you’re done. Tonight did none of that, just added to the din. If there’s more to come, then that would be the time to make a BFD out of it. I’m not saying don’t report on the tax returns, but the hype is ridiculous. Just do it as another day’s story without the breathless countdown and other clickbait BS. RM has released far more important and hard hitting stories without all the hoopla and fanfare. She was guilty of serious hype tonight and if you look at RW twitter, it backfired spectacularly.

You’re right about that…but I also don’t want to see the left go down some”truther” rabbit hole. I love that Rachel is trying to put together the pieces of the Russian connection. • Cousin Itt de La Résistance

It’s not about their oil, imho. Russia has plenty of their own, and more importantly, natural gas. It’s about geopolitics and being a thorn in our side. From their standpoint, it may also be about having a forward base from which to knock down ISIS and Al Qaeda because terrorists represent a greater threat to southern Russia than they do to the USA.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

it helps them raise the price of their oil if they can shut off the OPEC spigots

          • Cousin Itt de La Résistance

I don’t think so. The Russians would like the price of oil to rise and so would Donald’s benefactors in the USA. Our illegal incursion into Iraq did that for awhile but as we have seen, domestic productive greed and ingenuity have undercut Middle Eastern petro gamesmanship.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

That’s what I was trying to say. Both Putin and Donnie benefit from rising prices, so disruption in the Mid East helps them.

Now that I’ve accepted there wasn’t exactly a smoking gun, there is still plenty of smoke. The first thing is that it just might’ve been Trump or somebody close to him* who released two pages of what is probably a very long tax return and the second is that he was able to write off $100 million in losses while paying a lower effective tax rate than upper middle class people.

The third thing is that if Trump’s healthcare care plan sees daylight, 64 year olds making $24,000 per year can still look forward to paying $15,000 per year in healthcare premiums, which is the thing I’m most concerned about as a 47 year old.

Neil Gorsuch Has Web of Ties to Secretive Billionaire

WASHINGTON — The publicity-shy billionaire Philip F. Anschutz inherited an oil and gas firm and built it into an empire that has sprawled into telecommunications, railroads, real estate, resorts, sports teams, stadiums, movies and conservative publications like The Weekly Standard and The Washington Examiner.

Mr. Anschutz’s influence is especially felt in his home state of Colorado, where years ago Judge Neil M. Gorsuch, a Denver native, the son of a well-known Colorado Republican and now President Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, was drawn into his orbit.

The Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation, which developed the list
of potential Supreme Court nominees from which Mr. Trump selected Judge
Gorsuch, receive funding from Mr. Anschutz. But it is not clear how well the two know each other, in part because the mogul and those around him keep a low profile.

Then, as I noticed a long time ago that Anna Elizabeth is wont to do, she deleted the initial comment and the fuck you comment, leading people to think she had been banhammered until Dok cleared up that she had not.

It’s all downthread somewhere. Look for my comments and you’ll find it, as I commented at the time.

          • WomanInThePersistence

I understand your flabbergastion. That’s how I felt too.

I am in no way excusing this. Please believe me. But was it just before her long absence? Right when her mother died? I in no way think that this is OK, but, well, oh jeez…..that’s just not cool.

          • Roni Resistance Raven

What? Her telling everyone here to go fuck themselves? That was today.

Again, I wish I’d thought to make a screen shot.

As for her deleting posts in the past, I can’t say when exactly that was. It was before her long absence but right before? I don’t know.

But I do know it happened more than once because I was befuddled by it.

          • WomanInThePersistence

My goodness, that’s just odd. And fwiw, don’t let it bug you too much. You’re a good person.

          • Roni Resistance Raven

            It is very odd.

And thanks, but I’m not bugged. I’m suspicious and skeptical and disdainful. My biggest pet peeve in the world is hypocrisy, as exemplified by someone who basks in the support and affection and empathy of Wonketeers one minute and is telling us all to go fuck ourselves the next.

What was the “joke” Anon made?

          • Roni Resistance Raven

Anna said something along the lines of the news media being untrustworthy, and Anon said “Stop watching Fox News!”

          • Shanzgood

Oh. Huh. That doesn’t seem like her. Weird.

          • Roni Resistance Raven

I don’t mean this to sound condescending. Because I’m such a technofeeb that I am looking at this exchange right now in another window and just remembered that although I know how to make a screen shot I don’t know how to post it.

So…find a non-comment by anon, click on his/her name and scroll down to the post that says So stop watching Fox.

There is the whole exchange with my contemporaneous non-comment about Anna’s non-comment telling everyone here to go fuck themselves. I used her exact words because the post disappeared.

I notice also that anon’s non-comment is now arrow pointed at Guest.

Meh, a 2 page summery of tax returns… not all that exciting…

This MSNBC/RM tax hype is not far removed from the MSNBC cameras focussed on a tarmac in Des Moines, waiting for the joke that was then known as “The Donald “to arrive. Focussed for 45 minutes. Transfixed. And now. let’s check in with Chris(Matthews). “Chris, what are you seeing down there”? “Well, Rachel, Cory Lewendokoskivich tells us that the candidate is due to arrive in this economically anxious city in about 45 minutes”. “Angela, is that what you’re hearing? What are you hearing down there”? “Chris, I’ve been told by KellyAnne Conway that a jubilant, freshly recharged [sniff, sniff] candidate is arriving, just in time to reassure an economically uncertain, unconfident electorate that he is ‘in there corner’. My spin: When someone with the reportorial and academic bona fides like Maddow breaks a story and it seems incomplete, it is–it can be almost nothing else. What it does do is encourage others to leak and talk to the media. Again, she and others are building a case and that case needs evidence. It takes time and the myth of the smoking gun is just that–largely a myth. Watergate was a very protected series of events on all sides and it took a hella long time to bring Nixon down.

I think some of you people are right, this is misdirection, I bet Bannon sent those tax returns to Maddow so everyone would go nutto and break twitter, which they did. However, is anyone watching what the Administration is doing now? Quietly passing some new bill to lock up all liberals perhaps? Or designing some new kitten torture device? Maybe a rape dungeon with a bathtub full of acid somewhere under the Whitehouse? This is starting to look more and more like 1984, crossed with mad max and perhaps a bit of Alien mixed in.

Seriously, something else is going on, you all need to watch the unseen hand.

Here’s the basic recipe for the chick peas.

        http://www.amateurgourmet.com/2013/01/lebanese-chickpea-stew.html

Saffron rice recipe, though I’d only use 10 threads of saffron as it can be overpowering

        http://toriavey.com/toris-kitchen/2011/09/saffron-rice/

        Braised zucchini;

On med heat, sautéed 1/2 head of finely chopped fennel & 1 roughly chopped poblano chile in 1 tbs olive oil until soft,

add 2 pinches of whole cumin seed & 5 saffron threads, 5 minced cloves of garlic, a pinch of cardomon, & a hearty pinch of salt & cook for 2 more minutes,

add 2 finely chopped tomatoes and let cook down until tomatoes are losing their shape.

Add two 1/2″ diced zucchini and simmer for 20 minutes or until zucchini is just getting soft but still has texture.

        There you go

        • persistently_resistant_gayby

I’m gonna have to scour the earth for Poblano Chillies (mostly coz I haz no clue what it is) – but any recommended substitutes..?

          • Anna Rompage

Check your local grocery store in the fresh produce section, they’re big super dark green chilies that will be near the jalapeños… they might call them Pasillia. And if you cannot find them, fresh Anaheim chiles will work as well

          • persistently_resistant_gayby

Anaheims may be hard to find – I might go with Cindy’s suggestion anyway! Thanks!

          • CindyinEncinitas

Anaheims or jalapeños dependng on your heat tolerance.

        OF COURSE NOT.

    • Jukesgrrl

Absolutely correct. I lived and worked in DC throughout Watergate. I used to take a bus to work and sometimes Carl Bernstein was on the same bus. I knew who he was but I didn’t bother him and no one else did either. Reporters weren’t celebrities then. He was a guy doing a job. It took a LONG time. Nearly 1,000 days with many ups and downs. Many days we thought Nixon would get away with what he did. And people forget he had plenty of powerful supporters who tried to carry on as if everything was normal, including the people I worked for when I first went to Washington. Nothing to see here was their motto. Even when we got to the stage of the Congressional hearings being held, it was possible the Nixon Administration would survive the controversy. But there were people of integrity who stood up. Unlikely heroes and heroines like John Mitchell’s wife Martha who wouldn’t be silenced even when her husband’s associates branded her an alcoholic who had lost her mind. In the end the truth was told, but it took a long time.

      • yyyaz

I try not to post this too often. It cemented my political leanings when I was just a wee yyyaz.
“We’ll drive this country so far to the right you won’t recognize it.” — John Mitchell

        • WomanInThePersistence

“They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” – Joni Mitchell

        • Jukesgrrl

And he certainly did try. People in my first office loved that asshole. He was one of those presto-chango money guys who made things easy for Rockefeller and was one of the early masters at blaming minority groups for the nation’s ills. This country would have been paradise if only blacks weren’t all violent criminals and hippies weren’t all communist drug addicts, according to good ole John.

      • Cousin Itt de La Résistance

Oh hell yes, now I recall Martha Mitchell. She reminded me so much of my own mom who drank vodka in the afternoon while watching the Watergate hearings with me that summer. I felt sorry for her, and my mom.

        • Ω cynmac will never surrender

Hmmm. My mom was wine and antidepressants. We called it the “breakfast of champions” so my parents would think we were talking about fucking Wheaties.

  • I think people are being too hard on Rachel. We can’t simultaneously insist that it’s important for candidates/presidents to show their taxes and then say, “meh, not newsworthy enough” when the guy that refused to show his taxes has some leak out. Two pages of his taxes are newsworthy no matter what they show or where they came from, if only because he was so adamant about not releasing them. This only underscores that THIS PRESIDENCY IS NOT NORMAL, and that’s what we need to remember, always.

I think we’re all looking too hard for the smoking gun that’s going to take him out. Understandable, but I am pretty sure that’s not going to happen (if you ask me, there have been a few smoking guns already – pre-11/8/16, even – but none of them were successful at taking him out.) This is more like putting together a jigsaw puzzle from a bag of pieces you found in the closet. The box showing the picture is missing, some of the pieces may never surface, there may be a few pieces of a completely different puzzle mixed in — but there are enough pieces of the original coming out of the bag that if we’re patient and keep putting them all together, we’ll eventually get enough of the whole picture to know what it is. The important thing is to keep asking the right questions. Personally, I think that if there are any journalists capable of asking the right questions, Rachel is probably one of them. She did her job. (And will keep doing it, presumably.)

I also wouldn’t get too hung up on the distraction angle. Trump is his very own three ring circus — there’s some crazy shit going on anywhere you look. We just have to keep an eye on everything as much as possible. That’s OK. We live in a world where I can play farmville and scroll Twitter while working, taking an online class, and commenting on Wonkette. Multi-tasking is a thing. Plus, there are a lot of us, so we can look in a lot of directions at once.

    • persistently_resistant_gayby

We’re capable of keeping focus on all of the fucking crazy shit.

Forget it President Bannon, we are still watching the Russia skeeviness, the violations of the emoluments clause, the authoritarianism, and the imminent no-lube-rogering of Paul Ryan by Acting President Trump (and all the other GOP dumpster fires).

I know what it is, and it’s not necessarily “we all need instant gratification!”. It’s that so far, since the start of Trump’s campaign, A THOUSAND AND ONE THINGS have happened that SHOULD HAVE been enough to sink him! ANY ONE OF THEM should have brought him down. And ALL OF THEM TOGETHER have not brought him down. We are desperate for something to happen that will finally, FINALLY, fucking end this.

      • It’s frustrating as hell and I totally agree. He should have been finished ten different times during the primaries alone, nevermind everything since, and yet here we fucking are. But I think we have to proceed on the assumption that the one big knockout moment is just not coming, or it would have by now. So we have to keep chipping away piece by piece. Isn’t there a saying about dripping water being able to wear away stone, given enough time? Not as satisfying as taking a sledgehammer to the stone, but if it’s what we’ve got, then we go with it.

This nonsense about orbits comes from astronomers who know nothing about planets.

For planetary scientists, it’s a planet of it’s large enough to to attain a roughly spherical shape.

Edit: Hell, by the orbital definition, Earth is not a planet.

          • Gosala

Urine is a liquid not a solid, and in any case or is not clear that even a drop would retain any coherent structure over time.

          • FukuiSanYesOta

The reason I posted that rather facetious comment: liquids form spheres in zero g, urine would freeze in space. I realize that even Apollo whizz isn’t an independent orbit, being between two gravity wells.

          • Scrofula

Yeah, a big enough blob of Apollo piss would freeze into a spherical solid, and potentially last a really long time. (I’m sure there’s a sublimation rate, I don’t know how big the blob would have to be–maybe there’s a whole quasi-moon of astronaut piss forming at a Lagrange point?)

          • Gosala

At earth orbit the sublimation would be rapid. The drop would quickly assume an irregular shape.

And that’s the point, a liquid’s shape is determined by electrostatic forces, not gravitational. A planet is an object whose structure is determined by gravitational forces but does not undergo thermonuclear fusion.

          • Gosala

Orbit has nothing to do with it. Orbit is something astronomers worry about. Planetary science is more concerned with the nature of the body.

Roundness indicates a certain amount of mass, which is in turn indicative of the nature of the body.

            Orbit doesn’t matter.

          • SayItWithWookies

            Ceres?

          • Cousin Itt de La Résistance

            Ceresly.

          • Gosala

Yes. Why do you think I’m going to back away because of a few cases that you can’t get you’re mind around.

There are objects that are so large that they undergo thermonuclear fusion. They are stars.

There are objects that are so small that their structure is dominated by electrostatic forces. They are comets and asteroids.

And then there are objects that do not undergo fusion and whose structure is not dominated by electrostatic forces but rather by gravity. They are the planets.

It is the structure that matters not the orbit.

          • SayItWithWookies

Because so many definitions have been so shortsighted. I haven’t seen any consistent one before now. Huzzah!

          • Kiri the Paid Protestor

Yes, astronomers worry about orbits, which is why they’re addressed by the first term of the definition the IAU uses to determine which bodies astronomers call “planets”. It’s strictly a matter of classification, and wasn’t intended to say anything else about the body.

          • Gosala

But planetary scientists could care less about orbits. What do orbits tell us about the object? Nothing (though they may tell us something about the stellar system).

          • Kiri the Paid Protestor

Volcanism on Io? It’s caused by the tidal deformation that comes with being in a close orbit of Jupiter.

          • Gosala

            Why?

          • Kiri the Paid Protestor

Probably to avoid using the word “planet” to describe every roughly-spherical body in the solar system. That’s a lot of stuff. The IAU was in the position of having to retcon a definition for a word that everybody had been using for centuries; I believe the intention was for that definition to result in a set of “planets” that more-or-less matched up with how the word was already being applied.

        • Gosala

          Yes, the moon.

          • Scrofula

            Is a planet?

          • Gosala

            Yes

          • Scrofula

And Phobos and Deimos, being less than perfectly spherical, are not?

          • SayItWithWookies

They obviously didn’t want it enough.

          • Gosala

There are always borderline cases. Phobos and Deimos are examples. They are massive enough that gravity is a major influence on their structure but not quite massive enough for gravity to dominate. There are many objects in the asteroid belt that exhibit the same phenomena.

      • SayItWithWookies

That was a reference to the part of the definition involving a planet “clearing the path” of its orbit, I think. But — like the definition of species, for instance — it’s an arbitrary definition that is always going to have zones of dispute. Because nature does not differentiate between rocky bodies that circle a star versus gaseous bodes vs. icy bodies — only we differentiate between them. It shows that we’re using definitions that we’re romantically attached to and that do not comport with reality, so of course we’re going to argue about them. Because it’s entirely the wrong way of looking at the phenomenon.

        • Gosala

To some extent definitions are arbitrary. But in another way definitions exist to provide useful distinctions.

Orbital clearing is not a useful distinction. No body in the solar system can be said to have cleared it’s orbit.

Roundness is useful. It demarks a distinct set of bodies that are likely to share a set of common characteristics.

There are, of course, distinctions within the class of planets: rocky, gas giants, minor planet, icy planet.

Note that these subdivisions depend on (1)mass and (2) distance from the sun and not at all upon orbit.

      • Kiri the Paid Protestor

Put me down as an astronomer who thinks the third term of the IAU definition is problematic in that it compromises the simplicity and utility of the first two terms.

        • Gosala

With all due respect, astronomers don’t have the expertise or understanding to say what is or is not a planet. That belongs to the planetary scientists (full disclosure, I was a planetary scientist many incarnations ago)

          • Scrofula

I too, was a scientist on a planet, many years ago. I was also approaching sphericity at the time; unemployment took care of that.

          • SayItWithWookies

Do planetary scientists have a better consensus? I mean, we know that circling any star could be: rocks, rocks and metal, metal, large loose rocky/metallic agglomerations, rocky bodies with metallic cores, gas giants, other sorta failed stars, icy bodies, all manner of ephemeral rocky/icy things — like, is there really a need for a definition for planet, which seems mostly a romanticized artifact of how we first discovered how the universe works, though it’s no longer a useful term?

          • Kiri the Paid Protestor

I’m an amateur. No respect necessary.

Okay, but the first two terms of the definition are very generalized: a planet is spheroidal, and it directly orbits the primary star. Do you have specific objections to those criteria?

          • Scrofula

            ASTRO FIGHT!!!!!

          • Gosala

Yes. I don’t see why directly orbiting a star should matter. Planetary scientists happily study the moons of Saturn and Jupiter using the same tools as they study the major planets.

            Why?

Because their structure is dominated by their gravity. So, the same geology and atmospheric science works on Enceladas and Mimas as on to Earth.

And that has nothing to do with whether they orbit the Sun or Jupiter or Saturn.

          • David Chaillou

For the closer satellites you do need to factor in time spent in the primary’s shadow. As well as primary magnetosphere protection from stellar wind, etc.

    • Cousin Itt de La Résistance

When a smaller mass star orbits a larger mass star, we call it a double-star system or binary star system. The smaller does not exactly orbit the more massive rather, they both revolve around a barycenter. One important way we detect “planets” around other stars is with just this fact of orbital mechanics in mind. For me, the critical thing is, “are you now or have you ever undergone nuclear fusion?”

There is the theory that Trump leaked the two pages of the return to deflect from the other stuff that is going on. You know, health care law, Russian investigation, stuff that could get Donnie in real serious you have leave now trouble. It does show he paid some taxes so he doesn’t look like the swindler we all know that he is; Thus, it paints a picture that is probably not accurate. Rachel is pretty sharp and put the return in context of the evidence that while circumstantial, shows show Trump is engaged in illicit activity and trying to hide what he is actually engaged in doing. With only two pages, none of the support for what makes up each line on the return is missing. Which leaves lots of holes to be filled in, which many are going to start speculating what supports those numbers. Looks like Trump did leak this as it is clearly marked client copy. (Unless Melania did it, which makes Donnie’s marriage look shakier than I was thinking it was).

      • yyyaz

It really doesn’t matter who leaked it. I am 95% certain it was from Team OPOS, but even so, playing to the base is irrelevant at this point, despite his little campaign rallies. Donald Trump and his White House team reacted with unusual speed yesterday afternoon, denouncing the Congressional Budget Office’s brutal report on the Republican health care plan almost immediately after it was released. Last night and this morning, the Trump administration’s fierce pushback continued, with officials desperately hoping to convince people not to believe the CBO.

Hanging over the public-relations campaign was a fairly obvious question: if Team Trump doesn’t like the Congressional Budget Office’s numbers, why doesn’t the White House release competing data?

The answer, according to this interesting Politico report, is that Team Trump’s numbers are actually worse.
A White House analysis of the GOP plan to repeal and replace Obamacare shows even steeper coverage losses than the projections by the Congressional Budget Office, according to a document viewed by POLITICO on Monday.

The executive branch analysis forecast that 26 million people would lose coverage over the next decade, versus the 24 million CBO estimates.
It’s worth noting that the White House insists that the Politico piece is misleading. According to Sean Spicer, the report in question is real, but it was an administration effort to project what the Congressional Budget Office was likely to conclude, ahead of the CBO score’s release. In other words, we’re supposed to believe this document was the White House’s best guess as to what the CBO would say – and officials were pretty close.

    • SayItWithWookies

Not that breeding terminology makes it charming, but there’s a concept called hybrid vigor, which postulates that genetic groups that haven’t mixed in a while, when they mix, bring out a lot of latent advantages.
I think it’s mostly because recessive genes tend to be suppressed in that type of mixing, and recessive genes are associated with traits of inbreeding. But I honestly don’t know how sound the idea is.

      • IOnlyLikeCats

A lot of carrier genes are fairly specific to certain groups so that holds some weight.

Solid twitter analysis on the Maddow reporting tonight from https://twitter.com/HeerJeet:

Part of the reason people are disappointed in the Rachel Maddow scoop is they desperately want a silver bullet solution. That’s a mistake. In German there is a help distinction between a ermattungskreig (a war of exhaustion) & a niederwerfungskreig (a knockout war).

With Trump, we’re definitely facing an ermattungskreig, a long hard siege where he has to be hit on all sides, not a one path victory. Trump’s finances are incredibly opaque, especially considering he’s president & making decisions that will effect his business. The more we know about Trump’s finances the better. The picture is still filling out.

In the longer run, the way forward is political: hit Trump on unpopular policies & self-dealing, try to win congress for Dems in 2018. If you see the struggle against Trump as a siege, then it makes little sense to describe any one battle or tactic as a distraction. Also: when Trump sets tax policy it’s good to have his taxes to make arguments like this:

Donald Trump’s tax plan would’ve nearly wiped out his 2005 tax burden

We want that ‘silver bullet’ so bad because no other President has been a werewolf, and gotten elected despite devouring several small villages and bragging about it.

    • WomanInThePersistence

      German. It figures.

      • boyblue122

I know no German. But what ive seen from the language it looks very compact and efficient. Describing entire thoughts in one word. Its pretty cool

        • WomanInThePersistence

Well, compact and efficient if you’re not unsettled by ridiculously long words.

          • yyyaz

And the verb at the end of the sentence.

          • FukuiSanYesOta

            This. Most annoying.

          • boyblue122

            well yeah, that too lol

          • Dazza

            I take it you didn’t do a B.Sc. in Chemistry? :-)

          • WomanInThePersistence

B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies. Which is why I am a purveyor of cheesy comestibles. :)

          • Dazza

As long as there isn’t any balalaika music.

          • WomanInThePersistence

At least I keep the place very clean.

    • Cousin Itt de La Résistance

We have extensively covered this downthread.

Despite what Millenials and other kids might think, Watergate did not happen overnight. Nor even the Pentagon Papers. The Fourth Estate actually has to do work, over time, and make sure they accurately connect the pieces of a puzzle. Fox News and so much of our immediate gratification media culture bathes us in the sweet, sweet bubbles of do me now, that we are losing the forest for the please, please me.

      • boyblue122

and Drumpf’s Russia scandal seems 100 times more complex than Watergate because of all the players involved so its bound to take some time

  • Garbageman

Didn’t live up to the hype, sure, but it’s a start, with maybe more to come later – from somebody . . . would have been LOTS more interesting (I’m betting) if it had come from a couple of years later, during the start of deeper and dirtier Russian connections . . . one thing that emerges, however, is it seems pretty obvious that he’s not as rich as he has claimed . . .

    • ~ ☆ míkhαílα ☆ ~ 【忠実反抗】

He’s been a huge liar and and a slimy piece of shit for most of his life, so what’s stopping him from lying about how rich he is?

      • Garbageman

True . . . but for him to be exposed is a bruise to his ego . . . hey, I’ll take a moral victory wherever I can find one!

        • WomanInThePersistence

          Me too.

ETA- welcome! It’s so nice to see all of these awesome new folks here!

          • Shanzgood

            Yesss!

      • jkarov

And Trump was accused of rape by his first wife Ivana, and there are allegations of raping underage girls at parties thrown by Jeffrey Epstein in the 90’s where Trump was known to go .

There are few more odious and reprehensible sybarites walking the earth than the bigoted misogynist Trump

    • boyblue122

Drumpf’s new tax plan would have nearly wiped out what he owed in his 2005 taxes.

The path to overtaking Drumpf should be to turn his base against him. Show that hes trying to avoid paying his taxes while at the same time turning the screws on the poor and middle class

    • Snopes Shop

I thought it just made us look like hysterics with nothing to show for it.

      • WomanInThePersistence

        “us”?

And the whitehouse is now waying it’s against the law to publish the tax returns.

    Yeah.

No problem publishing Russian hacked DNC material though, no sireee, not even 1 tiny problem.

Is this the place to say that Rachel looks totally adorable – hot, even – in the photo in the article above?
I’m at work, so no bunk for me.

    • WomanInThePersistence

FWIW, she’s one of the folks I’d change teams for.

      • Cousin Itt de La Résistance

I suspect all bunks are taken when Rachel is on the air.

More room and cake at the canteen for us aces then :P

      • Poorly Behaved Pérsistanista

When I was a working massage therapist I had a buddy who totally fit that mold. She was 6′ tall, broad hipped, broad shouldered, bosomy, shaved head, totally warm-hearted and so both-teams hot that I had the dearest crush on her. It didn’t hurt that her name was Helen (of Troy :-).

    • Truly Madly Derply

I have always thought her lovely. Sometimes I wish she’d change up the pixie, though–just give it a Michelle Williams tweak or a Halle Berry muss. Other than that she’s pretty damn perf.

      • Poorly Behaved Pérsistanista

Sorry. I love her hair (now). That college pic shows how much she has evolved.

        • Truly Madly Derply

I know! And the blonde! Whenever I see a woman go from a long to short haircut I almost always prefer the short. There are a few exceptions-Diane Lane comes to mind. AND I find it’s a good measuring stick for a man’s progress along the evolutionary road if he likes short hair. My theory is that lesser-evolved males conflate (from the Latin: to blow) “their” wimmenfolks’ hair length with the desired and/or imagined public perception of their peen length.

Wow. Even at 21 she could dazzle with intelligence and compassion. Plus she is rocking that leather jacket.

“So much of my political involvement is tied up in me being a big dyke.”

Love you, Rachel (says this big hetero bitch)!!

  • UncleTravelingMatt

Cases are made piece by piece, bit by bit, drip by drop, often over months or years. There is a reason cops and prosecutors don’t comment on ongoing investigations — and it is in part to keep the target from controlling the story and manipulating the evidence. This reeks of manipulation.

I’m starting to feel the post- adrenaline slump. We’ve been up, we’ve been down, but we’re still in the fight. Here’s a baby puppy comforting a baby donkey.
