Yesterday I looked at my daughter. I was so proud, of her and for her. She would never remember how hard it had been to elect a woman president. Ho ho ho, I thought, how she will laugh at me when I tell her we made a woman crawl through broken glass to obtain the White House. I cackled with my women’s email group, as they planned their special voting outfits they’d been waiting decades for. It was frivolous, and fancy, and fun.

Like Hillary Clinton herself in 2008, not one of us imagined for one second that it wouldn’t happen. And like Hillary Clinton in 2008, we should have at least considered the possibility.

Hillary will be speaking this morning, at 9:30 10:30; you can and should watch the livestream with us!

But in the meantime, I want to thank Hillary Clinton for being badass, for just the past 60 years or so. She’s a great feminist, a better liberal than she’s given credit for, has killer space emperor jackets, married a shithead, worked for all of us. She worked to integrate housing when Donald Trump was getting sued for discrimination by Nixon’s DoJ. She worked for foster kids and disabled kids. She worked for poor kids to eat, and in exchange got savaged by the smug assholes of the left who were too myopic to see that she could drink their liquor, take their women, and still vote against ’em — ’em being Wall Street, you dicks — and who blamed her for every social ill foreign and domestic going back to the Titanic.

Even now there’s jerks on Wonkette’s facebook page dancing in delight over the “end” of the “neoliberal” Democratic party — as if, to paraphrase one of our commenters from last night, all those Duck Dynasty watchers would have voted for Bernie over the celebrity from the teevee who promises to kill all the Muslims and beat up anyone who looks different from them.

That “neoliberal” wing of the Democratic party — the ones who supported Hillary Clinton — were black men and ESPECIALLY black women (as always, doing the hardest lifting for all of us); Hispanic men and ESPECIALLY Hispanic women (though Trump was right; not as many as we thought!); gay people who like not being second-class citizens; educated white women who knew for sure that this time our friends were there with us; a couple good white guys; and some funky olds. When you dance on that coalition, you’re not dancing on Wall Street’s grave. It will be a thousand times more powerful. Instead, you’re dancing right on the foreheads of the parents who still pay your phone bill, and the sister who was so proud for her little girl. Fuck Obamacare. Kiss those 500 million new solar panels goodbye. Say adios to the economy, which has been such a disappointment to you with its 4.9 percent unemployment. Say ciao to any chance for our black brothers and sisters to have a listening ear at the top in their never-fucking-ending struggle for basic dignity under the law. Supreme Court? It has Jeff Sessions on it now, if not Actual Sarah Palin, you betcha!

So, you’ve been very helpful! And thanks!

We thought we were having a wave election, but we didn’t know we were right.

Oh, that robot. Oh, that fake. Oh, that dishonest woman who lies all the time forever, and got emails at her home!

Hillary Clinton is a better woman than most of us, and we’ve made her eat mountains of shit. And we just let her lose to that man. President Obama is going to have to leave a gracious note in the desk for him.

Can you believe we’ve done something so demeaning to the both of them?

Thank you, Hillary Clinton. You’ve run a kickass campaign. You inspired millions. You mixed proper warnings of the orange cretin with optimism about what our country should be. You were decent and intelligent and warm and sober, and we picked at you mercilessly and failed you, bigly.

If you’re having a cry, we’re crying too.

That got the tears going. And no onion ninjas. Real, live, tears of despair. Preach it Sister and stay at the front lines. I would not have made it through the night without you and this cadre, trolls and all.

      “Hey, y’all. Watch this!”

  • Ali | A Grumpy Cat

I’m genuinely worried he will try to put her in jail.

    • beingreleased

That was probably just a lie.

      • Ali | A Grumpy Cat

What killed me on MSNBC last night was Chris Matthews and other jackasses basically saying, “Look, all politicians lie and don’t fulfill their campaign promises! And even if he does, there are checks and balances!”

YOU’RE SERIOUSLY ON TELEVISION TALKING ABOUT WAYS TO GET THE DOUCHEBAG-ELECT TO NOT DO ALL THE THINGS HE SAID HE’D DO. THERE IS SOMETHING FUCKED UP.

        • Nasty Astraea

What checks and balances? The GOP has them all.

          • Ali | A Grumpy Cat

Chris was saying that the “moderate” Republicans will keep him from deporting everyone he said he’d deport, and oh, that Muslim thing is unconstitutional, and I’m like HE HAS SCOTUS NOW AND THEY DECIDE WHAT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL I was yelling a lot at him last night, because douche.

          • Carpe Vagenda

It was creepy how much happier he, Chuck Todd, and even creepy I-guess-not-never-Trump-so-much Nicolle Wallace were than Steve Schmidt.

          • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

That sunk in on me about an hour after the election was called. We were 8 electoral votes away from fixing this fucking wreck the Republicans keep leaving us. I’ll be old and dead before we get another chance to fix the Supreme Court.

      • MynameisBlarney

        We’ll see, won’t we?

    • MynameisBlarney

      Yeah.
      Me too.
Along with a shitload of other people.

    • Carpe Vagenda

Well, considering that his campaign helped to weaponize reddit as a political force, I have some hope that Obama’s going to do the right thing and give them a general pardon for Giuliani sucks reasons.

  • Cheesus Crust

We love you Hillz!!!!! Signed – The sane, non-racist, non-idiotic, people

  • Pugsandcoffee

For real, fuck those people saying “But Bernie.” No, really. Fuck you right up the butt with Lucille, ok? It’s all well and good to have some pipe dreams, but if you looked at this election and were like, “eh, if the increase in minimum wage isn’t what *I* want it to be, let’s have President Trump,” then you deserve to die strapped to a burning tire. If you’re walking around smug thinking that incremental change isn’t change, you fucking suck and you should die. Go do that now.

    • Pinkham’s Law

With votes, friend. With votes. Not a day to test The Rules.

      • Mezzaluna

I think we need a day to vent our spleens and vomit blood and guts on the world, because we are fundamentally good people who would never actually use an ax on these shit-stains that think other people are subhuman for not being just like they are. No matter how very much I my friend wants to.

    • h4rr4r

I know people who voted for Trump in PA, simply because he was something different. Change, even if it is bad is what they wanted.

      • Mezzaluna

You do different with food or music or where you go on vacation, not with people’s lives. Unless America really does want to go back to being ignorant, isolationist bird guano. I give up.

      • cheetojeebus

They’re going to see some change, in their IRA’s and home equity.

        • kindness

But not in a good way. No. After 2 years of Republican budget gimmickery we are bound for another crash. Let us pray Republican Daddies (and Mommies) don’t expect Democrats to bail their failed asses out in 2020 like Barack did in 2008,

      • Lefty Frizzell

That’s what I don’t really get. It’s mostly going to be “republican normal” – tax cuts, deregulation, law’n’order. The only change will be the more overt racism.

And you won’t be able to eat that in the rust belt when the jobs don’t come back after all.

        • h4rr4r

The funny thing is the jobs are coming back, I have friends working on such things. They are jobs for robots, though. I hope they know that.

    • MynameisBlarney

And a hearty “GO FUCK YOURSELF!” to all the abject morons that voted for Stein and Johnson too.

Seriously, what in the actual fuck?

      • starkitty

I don’t know who rages me worse: Johnson’s votes which actually were a factor, or Stien’s smug “Now we’ll see the cracks in the system”. You mean the ones you’re making, bitch?

        • Gabby Parsons

Wisconsin put him over the top. He won by less than 27,000 votes, there were more than 150,000 third party votes cast.

  • Ali | A Grumpy Cat

I had to put my Hillary shirts and buttons and the stickers I had left in a box and tuck them away this morning. I don’t know when I’ll be able to look at them again. I had thought they would be mementos of the time we elected our first female President; now they’re just reminders of how fucked up this country really is.

    • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

Got my unused bumper sticker in the same place.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

Yesterday, I optimistically put my “I voted” sticker on the “History made” magnet I got for giving (teeny) cash to Hillary. I just can’t have it out where I can see it anymore. So, right there with you.

      • Ali | A Grumpy Cat

A bumper sticker that read “another proud woman for Hillary” (or something like that) came in the mail yesterday. I had thought I’d put it on my car in the morning.

    • starkitty

There’s a practical reason too: now it appears it’s over, you’ll be a target. These people have no impulse control.

Yesterday we were passed by a reckless driver of a sporty car who shouted, “I can’t believe you voted for that c*nt!” My friend had a Hillary sticker. This lovely man added “She’s going to hang!” before driving off.
Now, as alarming as that was, the rest of his stickers implied he wasn’t a violent sort: he’s pro weed for instance. I really think, in his case, he was non violent and just baffled because Killary Benghazi etc.
But they’re not all simply misguided wacky folks. I’ve advised my friend to remove the sticker. She’s not convinced because our town is left wing hippyville politically, but obviously not everyone is.

      So, be safe.

  • Nounverb911
  • Cheesus Crust

Also, for the record, I am not sure I want to see gracious. I want to see anger, I want to see fire, I want her to call for us to resist and never give up on our democracy, to fight for it with our very last breath if necessary. I want her to yell and scream and fuckitall, because she has zero fucks left to give.

  • Obviously, our country as a whole didn’t deserve her. Sadly, those of us who tried to get her elected don’t deserve Donald Trump.

Fucking hell. I’m near tears. I rarely actually get reduced to tears these days, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to avoid it this time.

  • ThirdAmendmentMan

I didn’t think America could elect someone who is such an open bigot. Even growing up black in the South, most of the racism was less overt from the middle class and when you weren’t pissed off about it you could at least understand how they didn’t see the institutionalized racism.

Not today. White America is just as racist, as sexist, as homophobic, as transphobic, as theocratic as it’s been for the past 60 years. I hope blue collar and rural whites choke on their libertarian fascism.

    • Rick Hill

Reportedly, 35% of Latinos voted trump

      • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

Saw that, but the old Cubans always have voted R.

      • Red Bird

A lot of Latinos are conservatives, including Mexicans.

        • starkitty

And don’t mind being called rapists, apparently.

        • onedollarjuana

It’s the Catholic and macho influences. Also the Hispanic penchant for authoritarian regimes. Which goes back to the first point, I guess.

      • ThirdAmendmentMan

Even if true, that’s still a massive gain for Dems from the past. Hispanics are historically GOP voters. That’d be a 20 point jump for Dems from 2012.

        • Rick Hill

As if anything normal matters, anymore. Rational discourse and civility lost, big time

      • Kavefish

Really? Has this truly been the season of “voting against one’s self interest” by such a big margin?

        • blondeiq

That’s nothing new. People have been voting against their interests since Reagan proclaimed “morning in America.” Divide ‘n rule, baby. And never underestimate the power of a good wedge issue.

          • onedollarjuana

To be fair, Nixon won twice.

          • blondeiq

That makes me nostalgic for Nixon. How fucked up is that?

          • BJW

Nixon was paranoid, but intelligent and largely capable of governing. Yes, he was also a criminal…back to being intelligent and capable compared to the Donald?

    • Mezzaluna

When they all die in their early 60’s from treatable conditions that they cant afford they medication for, the children never move out because they cant afford to, when their house burns because the privatized fire truck cant get done their unfunded privatized town road, they wont notice because they are ignorant fuck-sticks and they like it that way.

  • Bill D. Burger

This really was an exercise in Big Lie politics, actually Bigly YUUUGE’ Lie Politics, and it worked. I totally underestimated Ol’ Yeller from the beginning and overestimated the common sense of the voter.
Against a monumental mountain of lies, fraud, whine, hate, rage and bigotry was an extraordinarily qualified woman with a private server and she, in the end, was steamrolled by the flim-flam man and his rage machine.

In the end it was a marketing campaign, Hair Furor and Kellyanne Conjob knew how to tap into the fear and bigotry of the white entitled mob and market to them false hope, false promises and false dreams. Whether they ever wake up to that fact is now anyone’s guess. My ability to guess is still in recovery.

    • Red Bird

Yeah. I hope whatever jobs, money or success they think will come from this never happens.

  • Arse Grammatica

As a white guy I am truly sorry. White people suck.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

      Same here.

    • MynameisBlarney

The ones that voted for trump sure as fuck do.
But this white guy <—- voted for Hillary.

    • MynameisBlarney

  • Jeffocaster in the desert

    Dear Wonkette,

Thank you for being here during the election cycle and going forward as a release and a forum for those of us who believe in justice.

I have ground around in my head all the things that could tip democracy back to for the people and not the powerful money interests. What I have concluded is not so important as the fact I have thought about ideas and I have Wonkette to thank for that. In between the humor, the snark, the recipes I learned a lot, thought a lot and shared some pain.

To Rebecca, Dok, Evan, Robyn and the interns….thanks and keep up the wonderful work.

    Jeffocaster.

  • Skeptical_thinker

I don’t think things can get much worse. Until he is inaugurated. We are fucked!

    • blondeiq

Never say that. I thought things couldn’t get worse than Nixon, and then we got Reagan. I thought things couldn’t be worse than Reagan, and we got W Bush (not even counting HW, who was bad in his own way but nowhere near as bad as…oh, fuck it). This is the lovely perspective one gains when one is Old./bitter

  • Lefty Frizzell

I did not see this coming.

Acch. I watched in stoney-faced disbelief last night, and cried a little this morning.

It’s hard to digest that half the country believe Trump to be more honest and trustworthy than Clinton – I can’t make that intersect with reality at all, anywhere.

But it’s bigger than Trump, or America. Whether it’s THE power is up for debate, but USA is undeniably A power, and I really believed that two terms under a centrist technocrat had proved what could be done, and a third term could help the whole world turn a corner into a newer, more rational and humane, way of dealing with each other.

It will come, eventually, but now with the supreme court locked in it’s a certainty I won’t see it in my lifetime, and that does leave me feeling somewhat sad and purposeless.

A local rock station has been playing “End of The World As We Know It” continuously for a couple of hours now.

I think I may take a break from news media for a while after today, but hold your heads high Wonkers – it still looks good for winning the popular vote and that’s a mandate to use whatever political, legal and civil tools are available to peacefully oppose Trump, not because of who he is or what he believes, but where his policies are objectively contrary to principles of justice and compassion, assuming we ever find out what his policies are in any detail.

Later then. Rock on and stay strong!

All you need is a lot of money, a lack of shame, and minimal melanin, and you too can some day grow up to be president of the untied states. The system may be rigged, but that’s a feature, not a bug. And now I’ve got “It’s Money That Matters” stuck in my head. Hopefully it will wear off soon, and hopefully I’ll start thinking that it is still worth fighting for a better America (U.S. of, such as, not the full set of continents, as that is entirely too lofty). At the moment, though, I’m more inclined to start over somewhere else. We had a chance to do something historic, or at least not boneheadedly stupid, craven and evil, and we chose the pussygrabber. MIssissippi America Goddam.

The quiet solitude is going to be a good thing for me today.

I love you, Wonkette, and I love the commenters who aren’t allowed to comment.

But, I can’t. I can’t face this reality right now and not lose my sanity. I’ve fought the good fight for so long and then to see the worst of humanity win? Can’t do it.

I’m going to take a reality break. I’m wrapping myself in my writing and my parents and pictures of cute kittens. I’m going to try to win the lottery and move the hell away from people.

Because if there was ever a morning to wish for a zombie apocalypse, this is it.

  • Daisy

It’s like watching every dream I had die.I’m terrified I won’t be able to stay in college. Job, kids? Doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

    • Rick Hill

One day at a time, that’s the only way you get through anything. Plan for tomorrow, live for today. Maybe study a field that earns money off of misery and suffering because that is going to be coming down the pike

    • efoveks

If you even think all us olds are going to let you not finish college, successfully, you are wrong. The “Momma brigade” (including me and berkelyfarm, and Suse and all of us anywhere near the Bay) will surround you and ply you with hugs and cocoa until you do.!

      • Daisy

        Thanks.

    • Jeffocaster in the desert

Chin up. We are in this together. Focus on your studies and doing well. That is your job right now. Things need work but you’ll be OK.

    • OppressedMass

I’ve been giving my 30-year-old grouchy looks because, Where are MY grandchildren?
Now I’m all, Sweetie, move to scandanavia; do not reproduce.

    • NastyBossetti

I initially read that as “It’s like watching every dog I had die.” Which actually describes exactly how I feel. It’s like watching every pet I’ve ever loved die right in front of me at the same time.

  • I didn’t cry last night, BUT i am now. I’m not even an American and this has got me so fucking stressed, depressed, and disgusted i don’t know what to do anymore

    • efoveks

You’re gonna have to add on to your house dear, because we’re all a comin’! (Hope you like cats and dogs and all the cutes, because along with all our tacky asses, we got that going on too) :)

    • Vienna Woods

I cannot believe how sad I feel. Everyone I know up here is reeling in disbelief. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

  • TJ Barke

    …—…—…—…

  • YoNastyBunny

For now, I’m just holding my shit together until my day off on Veteran’s Day Friday. Then I think I might watch a few movies and maybe have a good cry at some odd part in the movie.

  • Rick Hill

One of the few plans trum has is to privatize the highway system. Good luck to you asshats in the red states that live bafumpty miles from everything

    • mancityhombres

another reason I’m glad I no longer live with the ex. My commute has shrunk by 25 miles and 30 minutes each way.

    • Carpe Vagenda

It’s not like Trump is going to do what every other Republican president does and take the money from the tri-state area. If he does that, chinese billionaires will stop buying pieds-a-terre in his properties.

      • Rick Hill

Trump is after his foreign investments now. Backed by the full might of the US military

        • Carpe Vagenda

Yeah, but still. It’s Trump. The shit his family owns and makes money from is in Manhattan and Westchester and Jersey and CT, and he needs those to be destinations.

          • Rick Hill

The Newsweek article had a lot. The least being his S Korea poicy dictated by intersts he has in that country. He’s a lot more vested than we know and Ivanka will help him grow that empire

          • Carpe Vagenda

Irony, yes? The daughter he ignored grew up to be his number one wife and his eldest son.

    • Aniline

Putin did this and disappeared protesters. 2017-2020 in the US will be just like 2013-2016 in Russia, except the sane people in the US won’t have a more powerful nation to look up to. Fuck everything.

  • Watching the news this morning….

    • Nasty Astraea

I’m cancelling cable today. I need to save the money and I don’t want to even be tempted to listen to them any more. They are worse than useless.

      • Lefty Frizzell

Pretty much word for word what Mrs Frizzell announced at 05:45 this morning. Can’t say I disagree.

  • Mpeg

I’m still in denial. Just numb.
How do you say “Good morning” to anyone? If I ever mumbled it on past occasions because cranky, I’m swallowing it now because what’s really trying to come out is “DEAR GOD HELP US ALL”~

    • Rick Hill

WEll, we woke in a country that will never be the same. And worse so than 9-11

      • Usedtobeyellerdawg

I think America, the US part of it anyway, was gut shot on 9/11. It’s just taken us this long to die.

        • Rick Hill

It set all this into motion. It all begins to crumble, Europe is next

    • YetAnotherRebecca

I’ve been hit with really intense and unexpected grief before, and in my experience it takes a while to sink in. The denial phase, the “if I just put my head down and make it through the next X amount of time things will get back to normal.”

      It gets worse…

  • Big Puppy

Thank you, Hillary. And thank you, Rebecca.

    • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

Good news Rebecca, you’ll be getting my fucking off money this month. Hillary stole most of it this fall.

      • rebecca

        lol yay?

    • Jo Mathie

It’s so depressing. Hillary did 1 percent of the criminal acts that Trump has pulled over the years but she’s a woman so she’s obviously worse (I’m not saying that she hasn’t made mistakes or is perfect, but if you have a daughter in the USA then can you really say “you can grow up to be president?”)

  • lucidamente

    I love you, Editrix.

  • JD Mulvey

People aren’t going to say it nearly enough, but the fact is that racial hatred was the motivating factor among the rubes who did this yesterday. All the other shit was irrelevant.

The vote was from people who want to push blacks and browns and Syrians and the Mexican-American judges and the Pakistani-American Gold Star families all back under control.

    • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

Hatred, but not just racial. Half the rubes out there hate you because you can write in complete sentences.

      • JD Mulvey

They undoubtedly have contempt for white libtards like me –but it’s not even in the same league as what they feel towards the darkies.

    • Lefty Frizzell

Same as Brexit. You can call it what you want if it makes you feel better, but yeah, racism is at the core. That’s why Trump’s incompetence never mattered – because that’s never what it was about.

    • Daisy

One of my friends is American, with Colombian born parents. And she lives in a predominantly white suburb in Florida.

I was actually really hopeful. I feel stupid this morning.

      • TJ Barke

I just feel numb. And angry.

      • MynameisBlarney

Don’t feel stupid for wanting this nation to be run by a competent and extremely qualified woman.

      • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

I was too. Maybe because she lead in the polls since the convention.

      • Vincent Ricola

I had entirely too much faith in the goodness of Americans. I felt stupid at first, now I’m just sad.

        • Nasty Astraea

I’m sad. And angry. And all of it, all at once.

      • Michael Smith

        Me too.

      • CogitoErgoBibo

Same. I really felt in my heart of hearts that our better angels would prevail. I’ll just take it one day at a time, now.

      • Michael Smith

I’m nervous about my apparent lack of understanding of America.

      • WOMAN and PROUD TO BE – Holly

All of us were hopeful my darling. Don’t you dare allow him to make you feel stupid. He’s stupid. You are a wise and wonderful woman. NEVER FORGET THAT!

        • MynameisBlarney

          Damn right!

      • YetAnotherRebecca

Yeah, me too. And I thought at the very least my blanket of cynicism would dull the pain a bit. I was wrong.

      • J.Bo

…and the people who really, literally are stupid are dancing in the streets, shootin’ their little guns in the air like millions of Yosemite Sams. Feel sad, but don’t ever feel stupid.

      • Spotts1701, The Baddest Hombre

No, don’t feel stupid. You did what we all did. What anyone does when they’re hoping and praying. It’s not stupid to hope that good sense will prevail over short-term selfishness. It’s not stupid to hope a very qualified woman could defeat a absolutely unqualified man.
You did the right things. Don’t let them take that away from you.

      • NastyBossetti

I feel humiliated. I have been reassuring my Canadian in-laws this whole time, and now I have to go up there and face them at Christmas.

  • Bad Hombre Ron

I have friends to contact. People I love. People who are gay or TG or female or disabled otherwise about to be marginalised. Something is going to need to be done before the border becomes vastly less open.
And to everyone I tried to comfort last night, I am sorrier than you can imagine. I was sure things would work out. I never, not in a billion years, would have thought America was so stupid, for all that I was prone to mock it in the past.
In the meantime I am going to do some work outside, despite the cold and dampness. And try not to think what a crashing economy is going to do to us Up Here.

    • Such a Nasty Khaleesi

Waiting for the call from our financial lady. She always calls when the markets crash to reassure us all will be well. What the fuck she gonna say today? No way the platitudes are gonna work.

Yes, I am lucky enough to have a financial lady and I goddamn well know it. My tears today are for people who don’t, and for people of color, LGBTQ, etc and so forth.

    • Vienna Woods

Thank god my retirement depends on my teacher pension and not RRSPs. But I do have a bit tucked away. I ask myself today: should I cash it all in, or ride out the storm? Fuck.

  • BokkenMonkey

This morning, when I woke my kids up, the first thing my seven-year-old daughter said was “Who won?” Not “Hi, Daddy.” And I couldn’t even find the words. The started bawling, declared she couldn’t go to school…went through all the stages of grief right in front of me. It broke my heart worse than 60 million hateful, ignorant, cowardly voters ever could. When I dropped her off this morning, she was promising me that she was going to hug everyone today, even the kids whose parents liked Trump. That girl is stronger than I’ll ever be.

    • Spotts1701, The Baddest Hombre

Take heart that you are raising a strong young lady who will grow up to be a strong woman. You’re doing okay, dad.

    • Jgb979

At least you’ve given her the fire now to work towards never having this happen in a generation she’s responsible for

Thank you for that. I was going to look for a way to do the same today.

    PS: Fuck everything.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

I’m a poli sci major turned attorney with experience in politics and running campaigns. This election has ruined the intellectual joy I experienced in watching our country govern itself without coups or true rancor. Never thought it would come to this.

    • jodyleek

I feel you. I just cancelled my public radio sustaining membership. I was so disappointed in them this entire election season. Doing that gave me no joy, because I loved my public radio. But for now, I’m done.

      • OneYieldRegular

Yes, WTF, I put on the radio while we were driving over the bridge for an election eve dinner/suicide pact with friends, and NPR was interviewing m-f-ing Roger Stone.

  • Michael Smith

I don’t understand what happened. You know, I was pretty darn sure Obama was going to win in 2008 and in 2012. I had that same feeling about Hillary. That confidence didn’t stop me from getting out and voting for her though, and it sure seemed like lots of other people did, too. So what the hell happened?

Maybe Trump showed that exploiting the fears and rages of the uneducated will always be a more effective motivator than reason and persuasion. I mean, that’s been pretty consistently true throughout history. But its difficult to take much of a lesson from that. People on the left are too well educated and intelligent to be taken in by the kind of fear-motivating that could just as easily be used to mobilize small children. And so, if that is the way of the future, I don’t know if I see much of a place for our ideas and ideals.

Or maybe people will get sick of Trump and will come crawling back to us in four years. I just don’t see what he could do to lose his supporters’ love, though. I don’t know. I’m really sort of flabbergasted.

    • Aniline

Comey/Ghouliani happened. If the FBI “investigated” Obama’s birth certificate like they “investigated” Hillary’s emails, he wouldn’t have won either.

  • At least we can all look forward to President Trump ushering in ‘Grab em by the Pussy Day’ as well as ‘Sue the Gals With the Pussies You Grabbed Day’!

What American isn’t thrilled with the upcoming ‘Bomb the Shit Out Of Them Day’ or ‘Waterboard Them Day’.

    So…was this election really rigged?
Or are we actually burdened with that many morons?

    • TJ Barke

      Hard to tell.

    • Kavefish

I imagine it wouldn’t take much of “a little from column A and a little from column B” to get this result.

      • MynameisBlarney

I can’t believe that Hillary conceded without a fight.

        • Bad Hombre Ron

It would be a good strategic move if Russian interference is suspected. They have a few months to dig through the results and look for anomalies.

    • Michael Smith

I think there really are that many idiots. I don’t know why I didn’t see that before. I mean, I’ve seen all of the Trump signs and the ragegasms of Trump support of Facebook, but I thought they were just disproportionately loud. I guess not.

  • Red Bird

At work today, interesting to hear mexican-americans who supported Trump, laugh at, and I quote, “the illegals who voted for Clinton.” One of them likes to tell me about his daughter’s career.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

There’s going to be a lot of “good lord, what did I just do” going on with people like that in the coming years. On some level, I feel sorry for them and their ability to be so easily swayed.

      • Red Bird

I won’t feel sorry for them at all. They’re grown a$$ men and they asked for it. I just want to have a front seat when things so bad for them.

      • Daisy

I don’t. I lived in town with them for over eighteen years. They are moronic and racist.

        • Red Bird

I’ve noticed that too. Cognitive dissonance.

      • Rickyphoo

I would feel sorry for them, except for the fact that we have to live with their fuck up.

    • HazooToo

I wonder if he’ll still be laughing in 6 months?

      • Red Bird

I hope not. I hope he has to find a job somewhere else.

    • Bozilingus

Stop And Frisk will include all minorities, not just black people. Papers, please.

      • Red Bird

Yep. His son-in-law is an immigrant who I’m sure had to rely on amnesty to stay here. But he was able to go to college and get a degree and a good paying job. I hope his son-in-law and daughter get deported.

        • CogitoErgoBibo

I don’t wish that last part, but a little bit of learning is certainly in order.

          • Red Bird

Meh. I do. This election cycle has really made me callous toward people like that. If you can’t show compassion for others why should compassion be shown to you?

  • Daisy

I want to hug her. Because I think both of us need it. Thank you Rebecca.

Me echoing in your head for all eternity: I told you so :)

Not only is Hillary Clinton a better individual than most, so is the very progressive President Obama (paragon of virtue by any standard). The left traded them both for a fascist with a theocrat slobbering at his side. I don’t intend to cry :) I intend to revel in the fact that the lefties who helped this along as planned will be living the nightmare their Nader 2.0 created right alongside the poor schmucks they threw under the bus at the behest of these fascist scum sacks: http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/42436_The_Convergence_of_Glenn_Greenwald_and_Rand_Pauls_Southern_Avenger https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/4da9c3d88fe7ad071b6c4124980e07031a054477accd03e8e8311012f6aebaff.png

    • efoveks

It has to be. It’s the only way any of this works. Also too, since so many will be disenfranchised from their health insurance, weed will become the new all purpose item in the first aid bag.

    • Pinkham’s Law

Oh, yes. Because the Left got Trump elected. Not the racists, not the haters. Not any of the people that actually, you know, VOTED FOR HIM!

  • Pugsandcoffee

I am legitimately terrified. I live in a very democratic neighborhood in Brooklyn that has still managed to see some police activity of questionable morality, an assault on a trans woman, among a few other things. Anything can pierce the bubble and this fucking election just popped it.

  • Saxo the Grammarian

Welp, 59 million Americans made a really stupid decision yesterday, and the entire fucking world has to live with the consequences. That makes me sad. The only people who should be impacted are those 59 million Americans. Also too:

    • YoNastyBunny

I’m trying to stay positive, but a small part of me is like, whatever fucked up shit comes of the Trump Presidency–war, genocide, global depression–I am never forgetting who voted him into office and I will always hold them personally accountable.

Now that was my 15-second hate, so I’m going to try to be positive from here on out.

      • efoveks

Well said though. Extra points for clear, articulate speech.

Goodbye, National Parks. We enjoyed you while you were here.

    • ChicagoLovesYou

I have a glimmer of hope for the NPS. If our recalcitrant Congress hell-bent on blocking everything Obama did could establish a new Park in 2013, then there’s some chance they won’t fuck everything up. There are a ton of Parks in red states, and they bring a shit ton of tourist dollars.

My internet went out yesterday and was still out when I returned from a watch-the-returns event in Athens. We left at 10:30. When I got home I flipped on NPR long enough to hear Trump was still ahead. I had bad dreams and woke up knowing the worst was true. My internet has been restored, so I came here for confirmation. I couldn’t bear to look at google news or turn on the radio. Thank you for your rant, Rebecca, and thank you for being there, Wonkers. I’m tired. Last night a 70 year-old woman, a lifelong Southern liberal like me, said she thought she’d be able to rest in her old age, but “the fight continues.” I’ve given up. I’m tired of being surrounded by selfish, stupid people. I know there’s no paradise on Earth: humans are humans everywhere, and seem to me to be a plague on the planet. However, there has to be a place where people value each other’s differences instead of being terrified of them. Where money and materialism: buying gaudy trinkets, is not the prime objective of life. Where learning and knowledge is valued for its own sake: for the sake of discovery, not for getting a better-paying job so you can have a bigger house and a taller truck. This is beginning to sound like a suicide note and it’s not (not as long as I can keep Medicare to fund my Prozac—lol). I’ve tried to make my corner of space a better place: a better town, county, state, country. No more. The assholes can have it. We’re talking about selling out and moving. We’ve worked so hard on the farm, but it’s drying up beneath our feet because of climate change that our redneck neighbors don’t even believe is happening. Let them try to grow something in this dirt. We pay an enormous amount in land taxes to fund their crappy schools where evolution is a bad word. No more. I’m ashamed of my childish, whiny, hateful, violent fellow Americans. I want out.
My husband and I were born to World War II parents and we each have had a keen interest in that period. We often speculate about “in what year would we have left Germany IF we had sense enough to see the writing on the wall?” This feels like we’re repeating history. Fox news has long copied Goebell’s propaganda methods
and Trump is riding a personality cult like Mussolini. He even looks like him. I do not want to be here when the brownshirts come looking for me.

    • LadyLaz

Booker, Harris, Duckworth, Murphy, Warren… I don’t think Warren will do it, but I would bet on Booker/Harris ticket, or even Duckworth/Harris (in either order).

      • Blacktop Cadence

I think Duckworth would make a GREAT VP, but I’m all in for Harris to run. She’s fiery and hard nosed.

    • Carpe Vagenda

      Please, not today?

      • YetAnotherRebecca

Just thinking about 2020 turns my stomach a bit right now. I don’t think I’ll have a shred of sanity left by then.

    • shivaskeeper

Dig in and fight on. Losing a battle is not losing a war.

  • MynameisBlarney

    Wow..
DU was fucking hacked last night!!!

    It’s STILL down…

    • Red Bird

      DU?

      • MynameisBlarney
        • Red Bird

Really? It’s amazing how unhinged these computer geeks have gotten.

          • MynameisBlarney

I’m wagering it’s not some random “geek”.

          • Red Bird

But why Democratic Underground? What do they have that the others don’t?

          • MynameisBlarney

            Not 100% sure.

  • JD Mulvey

This is the most important existential crisis for the Republic since the Civil War.

  • Red Bird

Is it too early to start the secession campaign?

    • Kavefish

      Yes.

    • BokkenMonkey

I think we need to start lobbying hard to all of the Republican Senators who showed the slightest hint of opposing Trump, or of supporting Garland. Get that man a hearing during the lame duck session. Our entire system of government is built on checks and balances. As it stands now, there are no checks.

      • Red Bird

        Not going to happen.

        • BokkenMonkey

Don’t care, doing it anyways. Won’t be idled by despair.

    • natoslug

Secession is like drinking — it’s never too early.

    • vivian

How do you secede when the two countries (red & blue) are intertwined?
There are the educated who can thrive in an information-based economy and
then the uneducated who can’t, and we are all intermingled.

      • Red Bird

Why not more than two countries?

    • shivaskeeper

Yes. So point and laugh at southern states and Texas wanting to secede when things aren’t going their way, and now want to secede? Fuck that noise.

      • Red Bird

No. It was funny when they did it because they weren’t really in pain. But minorities, women, etc will most likely be in pain if Trump lasts for all four years. So, secession.

        • shivaskeeper

No, it wasn’t funny when they called for it. Never has been, never will be.

  • anon_the_great

It feels like a hallucination right now. Numb and not trusting my ability to understand the world. How is it so many smart people were so wrong?

In all probability we will muddle through a few to four years of teh fascist yam and be done with him. The real problem is why and how did an absurd narrative triumph.

    • CripesAmighty

Problem is, that he can pack the court and unravel all of the infrastructure of progress since FDR. Hate to indulge in whiny self-pity, but too old to see the other side, and too po’ to escape it.
Wonder how or when many million in a similar position are gonna realize the consequences of electorally running outside to kick the mower?

  • Cock Blockula

So I tried to post this on previous thread, just as Doc closed the comments:

What I’m wondering is what the **** happened with the polls? I’m
looking at Nate’s, Sam’s, and Electoral Vote with their delusional
prognostications. What the ever loving ****!? (Self-censoring so I
    don’t get banhammered by mistake.)

    When the Brexit vote
occurred, the Brits (from the southern “elite” part of the country) were
shocked, I tell you, shocked that the country was going to exit the EU.
The northern part (which has suffered much like the south and rustbelt
in our country from economic stagnation and high unemployment) was the
part of the country that voted heavily for the Brexit along with old
people. There is a clear thread of racism in the UK too and the idea
that foreigners are taking all the jobs, just like here. The elite
British pollsters were all “oh dear, it seems that our data was not
sampled correctly and we are completely gobsmacked by this, old chap.”
The press and pollsters here were saying, well, Britain’s polling just
isn’t as robust and accurate as ours here in the States! We are best at
    polling! USA, USA, USA!

Well, fuck that shit. (No more
self-censoring.) What has happened is that a bunch of well-educated,
elite pollsters in our country did not do a good job. They were as
clueless as the British pollsters and probably because of their
location, confirmation bias, and yes, snobbishness that kept them from
sampling the correct demographic and asking the right questions to make
an accurate prediction. In the meantime, some lesser polls, which we
    derided, were probably spot on.

    Remember when Minnesota elected a
WWE wrestler as governor? Remember when Cali elected that movie star?
Well THAT’S the fucking model they should have used. The celebrity
factor was discounted. They thought Hillary had enough name
recognition. That people were smart enough to see that she was the most
qualified. That racism and sexism did not factor in. That the sheer
ignorance of the electorate was not important.

    So yeah, I’m mad
because I feel like I’ve been mislead. I used to have faith in certain
polls, but no longer. While I will always vote my conscience for the
candidate who is the smartest, kindest, and most capable, I know that
the celebrity will always win because, celebrity. I know that the
racist will always win, because racist. I know that the sexist will
always win, because sexist. Because that’s who the majority is in this
country. They don’t trust smart people and are so very, very proud of
    their ignorance.

So if the Democrats ever want to win anything
nationally again, who should they nominate? It has to be a liberal TV
reality star, a NASCAR driver, a wrestler, you know, someone real… a
man of the people (not a woman, mind you). Throw out some names for me,
my Wonkette peeps. I need a laugh right now.

    • Carpe Vagenda

And I feel like that assumes a lot of facts not in evidence, and I can see any number of reasons why the Trump movement would be very happy to have us assume they are.

    • smr06va

She won the popular vote, so the poles weren’t completely off.

      • Such a Nasty Khaleesi

Really? She did? I can’t look at anything but wonkette after seeing the headlines when I woke up, so I’m missing details.

        • sw19headlesshorseperson

Currently 170,000 votes ahead of Trump nationwide. 47.7% of the vote, to Fanta Mussolini’s 47.5% (Stein 1.5%, Johnson 3% approx).

        • smr06va

It’s not final yet — they’re still counting — but California should give her 1 million more votes than him……

    • TJ Barke

I’m pretty sure what they didn’t take into account was nearly 30 years of character assassination and sabotaging of public sentiment against Hilz.

      • Carpe Vagenda

and a rogue FBI director, and Congress unchecked by a popular president promising to hold the country hostage and nullify the election if she won.

    • Bill D. Burger

“The Liberal Redneck”? I love that guy….BTW.

Sorry Trae. It didn’t work. (Last ditch appeal to sanity last week.)

Fuck, I need to keep an eye out for his next show.

        • Cock Blockula

He has a YouTube channel. Check it out.

          • mancityhombres

            I’m a subscriber, I just haven’t gone to youtube for a bit..
whiskey and catching up are on the to do list for tonight.

      • Cock Blockula

Unfortunately not enough name recognition, but I like that idea!

    • Spotts1701, The Baddest Hombre

What happened, I think, was a combination of people misleading the pollsters to a degree, the turnout in the urban areas not overcoming the sheer numbers out of the rurals, Hispanics voting for Trump in bigger numbers than they did for Romney (WTF? on that one), and Clinton running up the score in states she was gonna win anyway or in states she was gonna lose anyway.

    • vivian

Maybe, just maybe, people couldn’t admit to pollsters that they were gonna vote for a misogynistic bigot, so they either lied or said “I don’t know”. That throws the polls way off.

      • mancityhombres

If you can’t stand up for what you believe in a closed session with a pollster, then you truly should feel shame in your beliefs.

        • Biel_ze_Bubba

Trumpanzees, by definition, have no shame.

        • vivian

No doubt. Just like the fuckers who said they were voting for Obama and didn’t. (Probably the same group.)

      • Greyhame

Too ashamed of themselves to admit their true intentions, but not ashamed enough to prevent them from going through with it.

    • Pugsandcoffee

Don’t worry, Herr Trump will dismantle the media so we’ll never have to bother with any polls ever again.

    • Marceline

Yeah, I do wonder what this does to the polling industry.

  • Rick Hill

The end game for trump is to use his position to become the wealthiest family in existence. Look for the trump dynasty to last beyond our lifetimes.

  • TJ Barke
  • At the corner, turn left

So, we get to see Drumpf’s tax returns now? Pffft. Yeah, I know.

    • JD Mulvey

Now that he can market the Donald Trump The President™ he can start to pull in some real money.

  • Melinda Piette

I’ll probably be way less active as well, certainly not watching MSNBC
anymore, etc. The irony is, those of us in real blue states will
probably be fine. The people who voted FOR him, in rust belt states are
the ones that fucked themselves, as noted downthread, as well.

However, Cascadia (and we can take Cali with us, too) is starting to sound really good….

    • TJ Barke
    • Pareto

So treason and sedition is what you’re advocating? Good, we control the drones now.

      • Cheesus Crust

Oh, you mean what you assholes were up to for 8 years? And you do know that using a drone on an American citizen on US soil is a massive violation of the Posse Comitatus Act, right? But, hey, it’s just the law – you guys wipe your asses with that, and the Constitution, like 3-4 times a day.

      • HazooToo

Laugh about murder some more, you fucking animal.

      • Melinda Piette

Funny, I’m sure you didn’t consider it either when you jackholes were threatening it non-stop. Also, same principles this country was founded on. But yeah, threaten murder because someone’s suggesting doing so now

      • Greyhame

How cute, you think that the “we” controlling the flying murder bots includes yourselves. The second you are no longer useful to the new establishment, you’ll be right there in the crosshairs as well.

    • ThirdAmendmentMan

I’m in NC, albeit in Raleigh which is mostly liberal. I’ve never been one of those “I’m moving if we lose this election” types, but I’m really concerned what our state government is gonna do with a full Trumpkin federal government.

      • CripesAmighty

Well, hopefully Governor Roy will be able to provide some braking to the runaway cement mixer if the provisional ballots hold.

    • Kavefish

I’m a blue-stater, a middle-aged white dude, who could very well end up on the street if Social Security is privatized. So, while I’m not as at risk as other populations, I’m not really in a safe position under the coming administration.

      • Melinda Piette

Hey, I’m middle aged as well! I’m hoping the Dems in the senate fillibuster anything along those lines

        • Greyhame

Filibuster? Oh that’s going away as well.

          • Melinda Piette

Right you are, silly me. Since blue states already support these crybabies, I’m sure we;ll be paying a higher federal tax rate now, as well

          • Greyhame

Heh, call me pessimistic, but I remember the initial Bush years quite clearly.

          • Melinda Piette

As much as I hated it all, weirdly, my family and I did fine economically, etc. Of course we would see the bottom ultimately collapse on that and not recover for another 5+ years, but you know….

      • Daisy

My dad is likely dead if it’s privatized.

        • Kavefish

I imagine there might be a lot of us in this position.

    • Cheesus Crust

Count me in. Cali is the world’s 6th largest economy. We’ll build a wall, have immigration laws like Canada (and probably a better relationship). And we’ll provide amnesty to all good liberals who need respite.

      • Melinda Piette

Hey, back when there was East and West Germany, I believe you had to leave West Germany and go through part of the GDR to get to the rest of West Germany……so…assuming poor Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and, of course the Eastern Seaboard from VA on up wants to join us….

Conversely, Canada still has a very groovy Prime Minister..

  • Jenny, Manocidal Vagendiac

My kids are devastated as am I. But more so for them. They’ve worried for months about the man on tv yelling about deporting rapist mexicans (they’re little mexicans)

Will their friends be at school today? Do they have to go to school? Will we still live in our house?

Yes of course I tell them. Nothing is going to change but I don’t believe it. Not really. I know what is just under the surface I know the nastiness white people have done for the past 200+ years. I know what their plans are because they’ve said it in plain english this year, instead of subtle whistle of the past.

I feel like I should mourn, but I can’t. My babies cannot live in a world where their mother is scared. Mom is never ever scared and she can’t be now when they need it the most.

    • Rick Hill

Our society is dying a million tiny deaths, now

    • Spotts1701, The Baddest Hombre

You have to be strong for your littles. I told a friend who has two children who didn’t know what to say to tell them that Mommy loves them, that Mommy and everyone did their best. And it’s going to be okay, because Mommy will protect them.

  • Jesus – I just realized.

Melania Trump is our new FLOTUS.

  • timpundit

The center cannot hold. What I thought were facts, what I thought was real un varnished truisms all got washed away. I can’t watch any pundit or read anything because I can’t believe anyone anymore. Everything is suspect now. This is all very unnerving.

    • Pareto

So you’re taking the red-pill you mean? Sounds racist tbh

      • HazooToo

        Fuck off

      • MynameisBlarney

        The fuck?

      • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

        • Nockular cavity

          Grab him by the pussy.

          • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

            More better!

  • Lance Thrustwell

I’ll just say this about me: I need to stop being a drama queen (king?) about this.

The country has survived Pierce, Buchanan, Jackson, Nixon and George W. Bush. It has survived a fucking civil war, a lost foreign war, and a serious terrorist attack.

If – when – Trump explodes the debt and otherwise fails to deliver on the economic miracles he has promised his base, they will turn on him like rabid coyotes. He is very likely to be a one-term president. Perhaps in that time, none or only one of the Supreme Court justices will have retired.

It’s not just that I’m looking for straws to cling to. I need to grow the fuck up and do the best I can for myself, my family, and what part of the country I can affect in a positive way.

Again, I’m just talking to myself here. I know how badly this sucks. I won’t presume to tell anyone else how they should feel.

Thanks for reading my self-help pep talk. If it helps you any, I’m glad. I really do love you guys, and I wish you all the best in the months and years to come.

    • JD Mulvey

      MICHELLE – 2020!

    • Nasty Astraea

Quite possible that he will be impeached earlier than that. Pence might be worse, but might at least refrain from abusing his power to go after his personal enemies and would be less likely to use the full might of the military in a fit of narcissistic rage.

Obama has an even more important job now in turning Congress in 2018.

      • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

He actually knows something (albeit not much) about legislating/governing as well. More than Trump at any rate.

    • Thanksgiving Loki

I’ve decided to focus like a laser on redistricting in 2020. As sad as it is to think of, Trump will likely destroy the economy and drag us into wars all over the planet. Hopefully we can make major gains until we can take back the house by the morally repugnant (but only feasible way) redrawing everything to allow us to take it back.

    • YoNastyBunny

This is a pleasant kick in my backside. Thanks! :-)

We can get through this, Wonkeratti!

    • Painter of Goats

Thank you for sharing the pep talk. You are right. Once the horror has worn off we need to do what true Americans have always done, pick up the fight and go forward.

    • CripesAmighty

Hey, that’s more rational than everything that got us here.

Take today to cry, be angry, stare off into space, eat ice cream and read comic books, whatever. Do what you need to do. Tomorrow we do what we can to protect the weak and keep from losing everything we gained. One day at a time, one foot in front of the other, one life at a time.

What can we do besides bend over? The Republicans now own all of the three branches, unless I just woke up from a horrible nightmare.

      • Pareto

Yep, and we’re going to slam it into you raw – no lube.

        • HazooToo

Oh, you think rape is funny, too. Not surprised. You’re a deplorable assfuck.

        • That’s the second penis reference you’ve made in a couple of minutes.

          Bless your sweet heart.

  • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

So the brightest thing I can find in all the gloom is that Trump has no guiding principles. Maybe if the presidency yields enough graft for the Trump family, he’ll throw us the occasional bone.

    • starkitty

I just don’t know how it will even work. Like nuts and bolts work. And if he and his cabinet can figure out how to make things ‘go’, I still don’t see how they can give their supporters what they want. Short of an outright military coupe, its just not going to work well.

    • Pickle Truther (AntiDerpomeme)

I want to hope that’s true, but I fear that his fluffing handlers will have him doing exactly what they want, swinging the country ever further rightward and “Christian.”

    • Biel_ze_Bubba

That makes him another G. Dumbya. But even more likely to follow his “gut” instincts, and even more likely to have certifiably insane advisers. He’s going to have fundie mentalists, fascists, racists, MRAssholes, and xenophobes clamoring for his attention, and who the fuck knows who he’ll decide to pay attention to?

  • starkitty

I woke up hoping for a Hail Mary. I logically know one probably isn’t coming, but part of me is still hoping…

  • Thanksgiving Loki

Hillary Clinton really, really was too good for America. We didn’t deserve her. We allowed her to be destroyed by petty tyrants determined to take down a woman for daring to be ambitious and intelligent.

She sacrificed everything for us, and we spat in her face.

    • Marceline

And Obama. Jesus. Everything that man put up with. He was the best of America and now he’s followed by the worst.

      • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

Silver lining: he was preceded by the worst as well.

    • Miss Roni Raven If Ya Nasty

I understand your sentiments, but FFS people stop saying “we” when you are referring to “them.”

I didn’t spit in her face. I didn’t allow her to be destroyed by petty tyrants.

On another note, Goose, gander. Trump is not MY president. Say it with me, people.

      • Thanksgiving Loki

Well, I am referring to America as a whole. “We the people of the United States…”

        • Jamoche

“I was people once. Then, I kept hearing how the people had spoken and the people’s will and I didn’t recognise the sound of the voice or the desires expressed and I realised I was people no more.” Someone in the UK named Robin Ince , via Slacktivist.

        • Biel_ze_Bubba

About 50% of those who bothered to vote.
I will not listen to one word from those who sat on their asses.

Just so I can get through the next four years, I am going to have to believe that this is the (hopefully) last, dying gasp of the angry, white male. And just for the record, I am white, 70 years old, and male. I am also angry, angry that half this country is so racist, bigoted and just plain stupid that they voted against their own best interests and elected an emotionally unstable, reality tv star.

    • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

Something tells me they’re here to stay.

      • starkitty

They may think that, but they have twenty years tops. Cold comfort I know….

        • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

Why? Unless we start educating our kids again (we haven’t), this shit will always be around. Fuck, there are still Nazis in Germany, and they got a pretty severe lesson by mid 1945.

          • keenanjay

Because what else do we have? The only option is to dig in for a long grind and remain the better persons.

          • Kavefish

Yeah, I was never quite sold on that “they’ll all die out soon” because I could see their kids on the bus when I do my grocery shopping, and the apples really cluster to the trunk.

          • YoNastyBunny

This. I don’t like to automatically assume that the Youngs will tend liberal. If anything, they take it for granted that racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. are problems of the olden days, and therefore any claims can be ignored–or just considered histrionic harping. I don’t know how many rap-listening white guys I’ve dated or were friends with, who have problematic ideas about race.

      • keenanjay

My son, near Tampa, phoned me last night when Florida fell. He was truly disgusted with our state. Then my 4 YO grandson (up late, bad parenting) said, “is that stinky Donald Trump coming here?” My son said no and then my GS asked, “is stinky Donald Trump going to San Francisco?” They were there recently on vacation and my GS really wants to move. He was worried that DJT would fuck it up!

    • Join the club. I’m 60, white, and male, and I’m pissed off as hell that this happened. As I said on another board, I live in a red area, and I’ve had to listen to these racist fuckwits for years, and yes, they are racist. They’ll deny it, but then the next words out of their mouths turns out to be … blatant as hell. I’m a vindictive asshole, so I plan on telling them “Told you” when it turns out they’re going to be the ones getting fucked over the most by President Trump’s policies.

    • AF Sarge

Looks to me like We the People have spoken. I know we are so racist that a Black man has been President for 8 years. How many woman are in the House and Senate? Obviously a majority of Americans didn’t think Hillary could serve as President from Leavenworth Kansas. I say you are the bigot for only seeing your opinion as valid. What has the Democrat party done for America in the last 8 years beside lower wages, higher health care premiums, and more Americans out of work. I guess We the People are still looking for the Hope and Change we were promised. Just in case you couldn’t figure it out I am Taxed Enough Already. God Bless America.

  • At the corner, turn left

Well, I just lived through one of the worst days of my life. It has made us sad, but we’re still alive and over half the electorate feels the same. Hopefully we can find strength in that. Long live the Wonketariat.

Now my toasty warm futon awaits. Good night and so it goes. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/a1495efe608086138de7ea1b5c320c809a0d2883a960ab80c5dc22572d6f9eba.gif

Oh, and here’s an adorable cat, Mama Mei, in a basket. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/333f6e6467c799c1e672396c0dbe354b2c72b3d2b5de934ebe8d4dbc58f11b33.jpg

      {{HUGS}} Sleep well, my friend

    • efoveks

      Awwwwww!!!!! Thank you! :)

  • Courser

Hi dear friends. Sorry I bailed on you so early last night. I just couldn’t deal. Woke up at midnight and saw the bad news.

I’m so sorry, I did everything I could. I’m just sick. Any small hope for my future is fucking gone. I’m both too old AND too young for this. Well and truly fucked.

    • Spotts1701, The Baddest Hombre

Don’t apologize. You did everything you could. That’s all anyone could expect of you. This is not on you, or Cally, or anyone else who sweated and worked and broke their damn backs to try and win this one. Feel sorry for the nation, feel sorry for what’s to come. But please, for God’s sake don’t feel sorry that you somehow let us down.

      • CourseZombie

Just had a staff meeting (telecommuter) with my boss and co-worker. We’re all totally gutted. Most of the staff meeting was us commisserating. Boss’ sister and family are emigrating back to Canada. They came here when she was in high school. At 4:45 AM this morning Sis was walking her dog because she couldn’t sleep. An asshole in a pickup truck stopped her and said something like, “Good morning! I’ll bet you voted for HIllary you fucking bitch!” and drove off.

Boss told us to have a glass of wine with lunch, at least ;-)

But I felt a little relief at talking to my team. At least I don’t feel so alone. Thanks guys.

  • AnOuthouse

    Its rigged!

    • House0fTheBlueLights
      • Blackest Noobs

it was…with votes…just the one we didn’t expect….angry…white…and women. and the rest of us didn’t pick up the slack.

which is one of the litany of problems with our side.

so yeah…get mad…get depressed…but once you got that shit outha your system….we need to reinvent….re-do…..re-evaluate…and actually make changes.

they….the right wing are still ignoring the minorities….let’s stop making that mistake ourselves…..they’ve put themselves in a corner….we need to pick one!

get motivated….there is no try….we must do and follow through.

      • Nockular cavity

It was rigged. It was called, “Gutting the VRA.”

  • beavertank

I’m trying to be pragmatic about this. I’m trying to carry on with the work of protecting the downtrodden and helping people who’ve become the favored scapegoat. But I just can’t.

The GOP is in full control of the federal government. The Dem minority in the senate can still do a bit to (try to) put the brakes on the worst of the GOP bullshit… but I can’t bank on that.

At least one SCOTUS seat is now going to be filled with another godawful absurdly conservative person, and there may even be another seat that will fall to them. We may well get an easy 5-4 conservative majority. And then that’s that for Roe v. Wade, at the very least. We’ll probably hang on to marriage equality, if only by the skin of our teeth, but we’re looking at a generation set-back.

    Fuck everything today.

    • Thatsitfor Theotherwon

We might get R v. W as well. It’s their primary wedge issue between people of similar color. They don’t want to lose that.

  • NastyBossetti

For now, I will take what little solace I can from the fact that in my township, Hillary got 3.5 times more votes than Trump. So at least I can look most of my neighbors in the eye.

    • Spotts1701, The Baddest Hombre

I take solace that we flipped the state legislature back to Democratic control, elected the first Latina to the U.S. Senate, and passed a badly needed school funding question.

      • ViveLaRevolution

I take solace that Florida voters approved medical weed.

        • Oblios_Cap

And rejected the Utilities anti-solar amendment 1.

    • CthulhuSleeps

I’m dreading jumping on the BaseFook to see what my “friends” have posted. And I feel REALLY sorry for one of my neighbors who was told by another neighbor that they hoped Trump would win so the first neighbor (Hispanic) would get deported.

      • NastyBossetti

Don’t do it! I found myself in an argument with an Australian this morning, who was very helpfully explaining American politics to me. “What Trump has done is dangerous? Tell that to PA voters,” he told me. I AM a PA voter! Tell me what?! Then he told me the DNC is corrupt and should have backed Bernie Sanders and this wouldn’t have happened, and Superdelegates are part of Hillary’s “club,” and that’s the only reason he didn’t get the nomination. And if Donald Trump is dangerous, what Hillary has done (namely, calling deplorable people deplorable) is dangerous, too! UGH!

  • Pareto

My wife and I were so agitated last night that we had to call our bull, Leroy, over for a late night cucking session to calm my nerves. Somehow, watching a black man plow my wife always soothes the jims.

    • MynameisBlarney

      Oh look everyone.
      An MRA douchebag.

      • starkitty

Now, now, maybe he’s just missunderstood.

        • MynameisBlarney

          I don’t think so.

          • starkitty

Lol 18 comments. His account is a week old.

      • Vincent Ricola

I think we’re supposed to feel sorry for him because “economic insecurity” or something.

        • Pareto

You’re so intolerant. Some people just like to watch their wives have sex with black men. Don’t be such a bigot.

          • MynameisBlarney

            Fail troll is fail.

      • timpundit

I think you hit a nerve there. lol

        • MynameisBlarney

          Aye.

    • starkitty

How open minded of you. Can we call you open minded?

      • Pareto

        I’m Jewish and a woman.

        • MynameisBlarney

        • starkitty

Sure you are. Wait. How can you be a cuck if you’re a woman?

          • MynameisBlarney

You have got to be the dumbest fucking troll I’ve seen in months.
            Congratulations, fucktard.

          • Mezzaluna

Sorry, but that is beyond stupid. I personally believe people like you are soul-less diaper scraping with delusions of grandeur. I suppose that means you can shit at least. Good for you!

          • starkitty

Looking at your week old profile(LOL) you wrote this at Alt-Right Weekly(which I’m sure you only follow for the recipes):
“The author’s whole attempt to flip the script fails and reounds against him
as an argumentative hall-of-mirrors: the author’s preoccupation with
not appearing needy is actually all about of his *need* for approval
from others – the need to be seen as not needy.”

            Sounds autobiographical.

        • Mezzaluna

So you’re a lesbian then, what with the wife and all?

      • Mezzaluna

Open to the point of being empty? Then yes.

        • starkitty

His brain has fallen out, he’s so open minded.

          • MynameisBlarney

You’re assuming that the dipshit has anything more than a cluster of cells in its skull.

          • Mezzaluna

Just bone and darkness in there.

    • anon_the_great

Congrats on your candidate’s victory. I’m sure your Mom is very proud of your potty mouth.

      • CripesAmighty

These people certainly are doing a fine job of dispelling all those nasty, undeserved misconceptions all us vicious libruls have been spreading about, aren’t they?

    • shivaskeeper

Sorry, had to delete my comment. Way over the line and not looking to get banhammered. But I think we all know your imaginary wife watched you get plowed. It’s OK to be gay. Just admit it and it’ll get better for you too.

  • CripesAmighty

Echoing Below: Thanks Becca, Shy, Dok, Evan, Robyn and fellow chatterers–Thank you for this virtual tavern. Otherwise, this is a very lonely place, right now.

    • Shan the Nasty Libtart

      Yes. They do good work.

    • Yes, thank you all.

      • MizzMazz

Yes, seconded. Wonkette has been my island of sanity throughout this election cycle. And thanks not just to the brilliant writers here, but the wonderful community, full of incredible kindness, intelligence and dignity.

  • Bill Slider

    Damn, you write good.
    It was beautiful, and perfect.
Don’t forget to take a nap, or two, today.

  • JD Mulvey

I hereby call on all Democratic Senators –whom I know all read Wonkette –to filibuster the fuck out of every damn thing this clod tries to do. And for fuck’s sake, keep every Supreme Court vacancy open for as long as it takes to have a Democratic President in office again.

    • Greyhame

And can we get some safety checks on the fucking nuclear codes already?

      • JD Mulvey

Putin’s keeping them safe, I’m sure.

  • Cranky Man

She’s won the actual majority, the so called popular vote. For the second time in 16 years the more qualified candidate has lost due to flaws in the system.

    • Ninja0980

      Yup, F the EC.

    • jwtukker

Second time in my life I’ve seen the popular vote undone by the electoral college. But while half of us stepped up the other half proved themselves to be the same old unenlightened asses that have been a millstone around our necks my entire life. As I said before, I believe this was a white privilege anti-progressive vote by people horrified to see the 1950s slipping farther away daily leaving them nothing but their squalid hateful lives. Fuck everyone who voted for that asshole.

  • Lefty Frizzell

OK, since everybody else is venting:

Anyone who watched all three debates and the Al Smith dinner and concluded that Trump was the better choice is fucking moran.

  • MynameisBlarney

The results of this election need to be fucking contested.
    This is goddamn bullshit.

  • Spotts1701, The Baddest Hombre

Brave hearts, everyone. We’re in for some rough weather.

  • Sekhmet1

I haven’t cried yet, but it’s 2:15 am on Thursday here in Melbourne and I can’t sleep. I’m gutted. Absolutely shattered. Not that my feelings are going to help anyone.

So yeah, I has no snark at this hour, just venting. It sounds a bit presumptuous but I really want to send HRC a letter thanking her and commiserating. I’ve always admired her, even when I didn’t agree with some of her positions, and my younger brother used to say any time we were on the receiving end of shitty treatment, “What would Hillary Clinton do?”

As with former Prime Minister Julia Gillard here (who was actually a really effective PM, but the “narrative” was all, she was wooden and a liar and her government was incompetent) I find it offensive and grossly unfair that a woman of her accomplishments and years of service is falsely equated (in many sections of the media as well as by people I’ve seen on Facebook etc) to an inadequate, unprepared and unqualified white bloke who thinks slogans equal policy and appeals to the worst instincts of the electorate. Drumpf makes Tony Abbott – Tony Fucking ABBOTT – look good. History will not be kind about the way many in the media, politics and our respective countries generally have treated both women.

    • Shan the Nasty Libtart

      Thank you.

      • Sekhmet1

You’re welcome – thank you for reading the stream of consciousness.

And looks like the tears have officially hit now.

    • lroom

      That was beautiful. Thanks.

  • Pareto

Trump did better with blacks and mestizos than cuckboi R.money did in 2012. How do you mewling shitlibs explain that? Could it be that you were all lied to?

    • Shan the Nasty Libtart

      Fuck off.

    • MynameisBlarney

      Hey, here’s an idea.
How about you go fuck yourself?

      • Red Bird

        He probably already does.

You better scrape off your Hillary bumper sticker first.

I don’t know where we’re headed. I don’t know how we’ll manage. I do know that humor, which seems to have fled the world this morning, will continue to be one crucial tool in the arsenal of resistance and of just being able to get by, and that we’ll continue to wield it mercilessly against petty tyrants like Donald Trump, living incarnation of the world’s worst dick joke.

    • Daisy

      Dick joke libelz.

      • Carpe Vagenda

We may have found a worse love story than Twilight.

    • OneYieldRegular

      “Leftists ARE the establishment.”

      Now that is funny.

      • Bad Hombre Ron

Who said humour was dead today?

    • MynameisBlarney

Ah, so you’re not merely an ignorant trumpite, you’re also a stupid fucking nazi.

      Noted.

      • shivaskeeper

Worse. Just a troll looking to stoke outrage because not so deep down, he knows his parents are right and he’ll never really amount to anything.

        • MynameisBlarney

          Oh don’t say that.
He has the makings of an outstanding power bottom.

Ironically, we must now rely on the power of the states to keep alive the promise of our country. We will also take to the streets when necessary. I was a young kid in the late ’60s, and we will rise up, once again, not so much to change the narrow minds of the racists and the angry but to lay the foundation of future Americans and show our children that this country exists for all.

    • Marceline

Unfortunately too many of the states are under Repub rule too.

      • cousin itt

We have the streets. We have the right. We must fight.

        Now.

  • Greyhame

Remember the near-800 point stock market crash of 2008? Well that’s just happened again.

    • timpundit

Yep. Good luck with retirement all.

  • Squirrel_Time

I keep bursting into tears at the most inconvenient times.

Trump will never be anything to me but a blithering fucking idiot.

    Except now he has nukes.

    • Bub the Bad Zombre

I will never speak the words P*******t T***p. He will forever be Drumpf, or “that worthless asshole” to me.

      • Oblios_Cap

Sort of like “That Dumbass” who was president before Obama.

  • I get some comfort seeing Hillary carried our county in Georgia by 56%. Not bad considering how creepy and red it gets as soon as you leave the city limits.

    • Marion in Savannah

Where did you find those results? I’ve tried the Secretary of State but got nothing. ..

      • The Chatham County Election website.

        http://elections.chathamcounty.org/Election-Results

You have to click the link at the top for ‘Live Election Results’

Again, I think 56% is not too shabby considering Pooler, Port Wentworth, Bloomingdale, et al.

        • Marion in Savannah

Thanks! Now if we only weren’t surrounded by, well, you know…

        • Marion in Savannah

          Also, too — 78.2% turnout…

          • I’m guessing the precinct where I live was at least twice that!

Lotsa cemeteries and ghosts, you know…

          • Marion in Savannah

[snort] As a matter of fact there’s a cemetery just a stone’s throw from my house, and another small one about 1/2 mile away.

          • Is there a better place in the world for bike riding or doggy walkies than Bonaventure Cemetery?

  • Bub the Bad Zombre

Stephen King once wrote that he suspected one “on the griddle session with Mike Wallace would have cooked Hitler’s goose quite effectively.”

Steve never took into account the possibility that the media would be making so much money off Hitler that they would not only be glossing over or ignoring his monstrousness, but that they would be giving him invaluable free coverage. Without a craven, compliant, avaricious media, Trump would never have been nominated, never mind won.

    • Oblios_Cap

I stand by my earlier comment that the Fourth Estate became more of a Fifth Column.

      • Carpe Vagenda

Yeah. Funny that. Remember when Andrew Sullivan thought those should be rounded up for the good of the nation?

    • starkitty

Yeah, they had to cover him sure. But they shouldn’t have waiting until the weeks before the actually election to give him the hardball treatment like every other politician. Only when the possibility of him winning became a reality did they start to ask the hard questions. Too little, too late.

      • Nasty Astraea

CNN certainly was not obligated to pay people specifically to defend him day after day.

        • Carpe Vagenda

Jeff Zucker has a very special place in hell waiting for him.

          • Grendel

Corey Lewandowski is one of the worst people I’ve ever seen. The level of gloating and vengeful rage coming from him last night turned my stomach.

That meditation got me to sleep last night. No shit, for real

    • MizzMazz

This is the best, and as a seasoned meditator, it really works.

  • Ninja0980

Sad to say but the only “good” thing is the party in power ALWAYS takes a hit.
Democrats have to start rebuilding their bench, have no doubt Trump and the Republicans will help them do just that.

  • Squirrel_Time

When your daughter – who cast her first vote EVER for a woman president – calls you from college and says she is terrified, it tends to sober one up.

Though we ended the discussion with 1/2 jokes about Trump’s goon squads kicking in her door, and ripping out her birth control device, I feel like we failed her generation.

    • Daisy

I told my daddy I was scared last night, before we knew. It’s going to be a hard conversation this morning.

    • Carpe Vagenda

Mine texted me at 4am to ask if she had to see her godmother on her 21st birthday since she and her husband voted for Trump.

      • Daisy

I have to go to my cousin’s wedding. I don’t know for sure who they voted for, but I know damn well my family is conservative.

        • Maybe you’re super sick that weekend?

          • Daisy

My mom will just be like, “If I have to endure it, so do you.”

          • Have a really good friend break something for you?

    • BadWolfGirl

Yes. When your autistic son – who cast his first vote EVER – wakes up screaming & terrified, it also tends to sober one up.

I promised him that there are still enough good people in the world who will not let the Trumpstormers take him away & lock him in a cage.

      We failed their generation.

  • Pinkham’s Law

OK. Cry, scream, throw things. Whatever you have to do. But then, buck up. They have full control for the next two years, and that is frightening. But then there will be a mid-term, and we need to look toward that.

I’ve never been *that* politically involved. Never canvassed, never phone banked, none of that. But a few minutes ago, I texted a friend of mine, who was a delegate to the DNC this year, and this is what I sent him:

“Ok, last night was horrifying. Today, it’s time to start thinking about 2018. What can I do to help?”

To take a note from Bill’s victory celebration, Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.

    • ThirdAmendmentMan

I hate to be the huge downer, but midterms are where Republicans usually clean up. Dems don’t vote nearly as much in non-Presidential elections.

      • Pinkham’s Law

True. But, we’re going to have 2 years of . . . ohgodohgodican’teven. We HAVE TO try to motivate people, or the following 2 years will be even worse.

        • ThirdAmendmentMan

I think the big issue is that a lot of his potential policies will likely take a few years to really hit. Unless he just straight pulls out of NAFTA and places tariffs on imports. If he passes his massive tax cut, it could even short term boost the economy. It’d be year 3 before the bottom fell out and we ended up in recession.

And bigoted social policies? America just voted in FAVOR of them.

          Yes I’m pessimistic right now.

      • CapnFatback

The people mobilized in 2006. They can do so again.

      • ChicagoLovesYou
      • SullivanSt

There is an R lean to midterms, but it’s usually overwhelmed by a bad-for-the-party-in-the-WH effect. Albeit moreso in second terms than first.

    • SullivanSt

We need to think about 2017 and 2019 too. Many states run odd-year elections.

  • redarmyzombie

Well, right now I have a cat purring in my lap. I’m still pissed, but I think it’s safe to say I’m less likely to violate the commenting rules at the moment, lol.

Seriously though, there is something wrong with this country. I don’t care what pathetic excuses they made up for themselves, these idiots voted for an absolute fraud, and you know what? They deserve to be fleeced. It’s just a shame they keep dragging us down with them.

  • KILL ME

Since the comments were closed for this one (LOL) http://wonkette.com/608425/go-fuck-yourself-america

My comment was: Now tell us how you really feel, Rebecca.

    • CapnFatback

(LOL) TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE! (LOL)

  • Grendel

Can I just disagree that she ran a good campaign? Whomever wrote that “basket of deplorables” line needs a good swift kick. Sure, they’re horrible people, but we don’t SAY that, especially in public. When you do that you prod them and wake them up… you mobilize them to vote… and that’s how you lose Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and the goddamn election.

    • starkitty

I thought that was a Bush senior moment too. Something that sounded pithy but was obviously something the other side would reclaim or “take back”, and we’d never hear the end of it.

That said I think over all it was a good campaign.

      • sw19headlesshorseperson

In politics, always, always say “many” or “some”.
        Never say “most”.

That was the only thing that was wrong.
Unless, of course, speaking the truth is now out of fashion.

        Oh, wait….

        • Grendel

Like I said, it’s not that it was wrong, it’s that you don’t SAY that. You don’t give them ammunition to shoot you with.

      • jowgajen

They willfully take her out of context. It’s impossible to avoid everything pitfall in that case.

        • sw19headlesshorseperson

And then we complain that the candidate is robotic and “playing it too safe”.
Oh and should smile more/less/not like that/the other way, if she’s a woman.

    • Lefty Frizzell

Torn on that. They were/are fucking deplorable, in the sense that their words and actions are worthy of condemnation. I disagreed with “irredeemable” though, since I believe very strongly that no one is beyond redemption. That’s why I’m against the death penalty AND life without parole.

    • Doug Langley

Except that Trump was saying worse things about more people and that didn’t seem to cost him any votes.

        IOKIYAR

    • Grizz1y

Every campaign makes mistakes, but at least she actually ran a campaign instead of simply holding mini-Nurembergs, basking in the hate and attention.

      • Doug Langley

That’s what gets me. Hillz had a Seal Team Six campaign with GOTV, oppo research, media, etc etc, which Donald just gave rallies. I was convince she was running rings around him.

  • redarmyzombie

Oh, and Dok? Thanks for everything you do. I know it didn’t make your job any easier for you when we were all freaking out last night, lol. Sorry for raging out, and thanks for putting up with me when I was a ragemonster. You rock.

    • Marion in Savannah

And Dok, thanks for getting rid of that smelly troll. He was even too stupid to make it into “Dear Shit Fer Brains.”

  • cousin itt

As financial markets fall, so will Trump, Inc. Just a thought.

  • O_Hellllllllp

I just keep thinking, this is why we can’t have nice things.

  • Good news? It’s cold enough here to make my eyes water, so i can pretend the tears are from the cold

  • timpundit

    I’m going to Azeroth.

    • jowgajen

Its riddled with trumpites. I logged in last night and could bear to look at any chat and logged off after 5 mins.

      • h4rr4r

        You were surprised by this?

        • jowgajen

No. I just wanted something to do. I already haven’t been playing, though, and this is probably the last straw.

      • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Neckbeards galore over there. I’m sticking to games without multiplayer for a few days.

        • jowgajen

          Civ 6 is diverting.

        • MynameisBlarney

I’m probably going to avoid grouping with anyone on DDO for a while.
          I’ll stick to soloing.

        • h4rr4r

Me too, except I define a few days to be forever. Multiplayer is simply a way to make game production cheaper.

  • anon_the_great

Damn it. We should have gone with Handsome Joe Biden after all.

    • Bub the Bad Zombre

He announced he would not run early on. Wasn’t an option.

  • HazooToo

I really feel like I’ve lost a loved one. We’ve been betrayed by our country. How do I start feeling better?

    • cousin itt

      We don’t.

We take it to the streets.

      • HazooToo

As soon as you know how, let me know. I’ll support anything that will help turn the tides.

      • HazooToo

You mean future legal fees for when they start going after the mmedia? Absolutely.

    • onedollarjuana

I felt that way in 2000. Started feeling better in 2008.

      • HazooToo

God, I hope we don’t have to wait that long.

    • Spotts1701, The Baddest Hombre

We fight. We stand up. We don’t give them an inch without them spending a mountain of time, resources and capital. Good old-fashioned trench warfare in the political realm.

  • MynameisBlarney

I bet George W. Bush is fucking ecstatic this morning.
He’s no longer going to be considered the worst president in US history.

    • sw19headlesshorseperson

To be fair, he didn’t vote for the cunt either.

    • starkitty

Oh ouch. The dark humour is dark.

      • MynameisBlarney

I gotta laugh to keep from bellowing every swear I know and some that I’d make up on the spot.

      • Shoto

        The truth is not pretty.

    • badhombreinatacotruck

“Laura, get over here and watch this.” George exclaimed, “This stupid Trump motherfucker is gonna make me look like Thomas Jefferson!”

      • MynameisBlarney

        LOL

    • Jgb979

      You’re not wrong.

His approval ratings are going to hit an epic 51% as poor saps like me forget the horrors of 01-08 in light of being thrown in trumpternment camps.

  • Bill D. Burger

Don’t care. He will NEVER be “my president”….no way in hell I will acknowledge him as such. And I will punch the first person who says to me that “…now is the time for healing and reaching out to work together.”
Fuck that….well, for now. I’m not in a congenial mood. Oh gawwdammit’…and the holiday season is upon us. Well, shooooooooooooooot!

    • theblackdog

I stirred up a hornets nest on FB but my response to the person who said “we need to come together” was “Last night half the country basically told me they want me dead.”

  • Nasty Candy Apple

I was just talking to my mom, and of all fucking things, the first time I cried about this was when I joked to her that Trump was going to bulldoze Michelle’s beautiful garden. I was like “…ha ha ha wahhhhhhhh…”

    • Vincent Ricola

That’s what made me cry this morning, too. You know it’s going to happen almost immediately.

      • starkitty

Not until after Jan 20. Unless things have changed.

      • Nasty Candy Apple

It’s going to be like ancient Egypt when the new Pharaoh obliterates everything belonging to the previous one.

        • MizzMazz

That happened to Akhenaten. Most Pharaohs would add their name to a monument, or build something else to honor themselves and their dynasty. Akhenaten was the big splitter, what with his attempt at killing the old gods and establishing his Aten, the Sun Disk with the creepy hands. Once he was gone, they tried to wipe out all of his works, which to them made him vanish. Ancient Egyptians had a very different view of art than we do – there was no art for art’s sake; a statue could have its nose broken off, and to them, that would prevent the person from being able to breathe. Sympathetic magic.
Damn, gone off the rails, rambling…sorry.

          • Nasty Candy Apple

No, it’s good to know what to expect from the new Pharaoh.

    • Lefty Frizzell

…and in its place there will be a big giant gold plated statue of Trump with large epaulettes, a bayonet and a horse.

  • chortlingdingo

I wish that I could take the day off today. Alas, I have a few important meetings. I feel absolutely sick. I can’t decide if I’m more afraid of what Trump will do to the Supreme Court or the possibility of nuclear war.

  • Pinkham’s Law

    LiveStream is FINALLY starting.

    • Kavefish

Yeah – scared the *crap* outta me… didn’t realize the sound was up so high :-p

    • I am out in public. Not sure i should watch. I am an ugly, messy crier

  • SullivanSt

Can’t start crying ’cause I’d never stop.

I just don’t know how to do anything right now. Standing up is hard.

Definitely wondering where’s a good place to volunteer though. Anyone know of any orgs that could use IT/developer help on an out-of-hours basis?

It’s what I’m good at. Personal interactions not exactly my strong point, especially right now with the number of people I want to tell to drop fucking dead you fucking shitbag, such as my boss who posted his vote for Trump to Facebook.

  • Greyhame

What is this music? Only heightening the anxiety levels here.

    • Nasty Astraea

I feel like we’re preparing to fight evil but I don’t really want the soundtrack?

      • Nasty Candy Apple

        Lol.

    • Kavefish

      I think they heard you.

    • MizzMazz

Yeah, this music isn’t helping. If it’s ABC, I can understand, but I don’t think Hillary’s people would have picked this playlist.

  • Nasty Astraea

What is with this god damn music, ABC?

  • Gayer Than Thou

Well I could certainly do without the dramatic world-is-ending they-had-one-chance-to-survive music.

    • Nasty Astraea

Don’t worry, they just switched to some kind of patriotic stuff to make you feel extra weird.

  • limberrat

While I thankfully live in CA, I still could not sleep since I have no clue what this man is going to do. I had a really hard time looking into both of my girls eyes this morning (thank God their so young). Wife is freaking out more than I am and is ordering passports for the girls and updating ours just in case we need to visit her sis in Germany.

  • Gayer Than Thou

OK, not sure “jaunty” is the way to go either. Jesus.

  • shivaskeeper

So best hope right now is that Trump seizes up on a cocaine bender? As someone who is not sworn in yet, Pence doesn’t get the nod because he’s not the VP at the moment.

    • jowgajen

The law puts Pence in regardless. He technically won election in his own right.

      • shivaskeeper

Then he’ll have to get Raptured.

    • SullivanSt

Everything is awful. If Pence croaks from the same mound of blow, it would be Ryan. Which might only be truly fucking awful in every way imaginable, instead of being an unimaginable nightmare of horrible.

  • Nounverb911

What’s all the troll splatter doing all over the place? Dok on a banhammper rampage?

Good job Dok. Keep it up…but pace yourself. Lot of the fuckers slithering around today.

    • Kavefish

Dok’s only got six arms, and they’ve been sprouting like mushrooms.

      • starkitty

I’ve been mildly annoyed many of my witty insightful replies are lost because I’m “replying to a comment that has been removed”. So the six arm thing is working fine.

  • Joe Beese

Despite having stayed up so late, I woke up before the alarm.

It hadn’t been a booze horror, had it. Donald Trump had won. The Republicans controlled everything.

Staying in bed for the next four years wasn’t going to be an option. I got up, feeling older than usual.

The New York Times unadorned report was a baseball bat to the stomach. “Donald John Trump has been elected President”.

I think – I hope – that was the lowest point. I spent some quiet time with my wife and our dogs. I left for work early, seeking the comfort of something constructive to do.

It’s hardest to see today. But it was true yesterday and it’s true now. “There is always hope.”

    • Gayer Than Thou

      I couldn’t sleep.

    • starkitty

I woke up way before 5. And I went to bed after midnight. Jeez. I might never sleep again.

    • Marla

It won’t last long. I would not be surprised if Grumpy Trumpy is impeached during his second year and it’s his fellow Republicans doing the impeaching.

    • Bub the Bad Zombre

Same. Went to bed half in the bag, slept about two hours, woke up hoping it had been a particularly vivid, horrific nightmare.

      But it’s all too real…

    • CourseZombie

Thanks Joe. Same here, dig my head into work for now.

    • Jamoche

If you’re still using the same browser window as you did for last night’s post, close it and open a new one. Once disqus gets borked in a process, it tends to stay borked; close & reopen makes a new one. And 7K posts will bork the hell out of it.

For fuck’s sake, America. didn’t our Brexit vote give you the slightest indication of what was going to happen?

  • Gayer Than Thou

Hillary looks very different this morning.

  • Ezio

Was Trump really playing “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” after his speech? That is…surprisingly self-aware.

Yes, in violation of what the Rolling Stones demanded. But whatever, copyright infringement is the least of our worries.

  • Gayer Than Thou

Oh, great – back to world-is-ending music. Worst hold music ever.

    • Pickle Truther (AntiDerpomeme)

    • Wee Mousie

What would you like them to play, “He’s Got The Whole World In His Tiny Hands?”

  • jodyleek

I can’t watch this. It’s heartbreaking to even think about. My mom will be so sad. She’s a life long Democrat and voting for Hillary was such a thrill for her. Might be the only chance she’ll have to vote for a Democratic woman president. It will be hard to speak with her about this without crying.

    • Nasty Astraea

I’m only watching because I hope she can talk me down from the ledge.

      • Nasty Candy Apple

What is she even going to say? I need Michelle Obama for this.

      • Verena Block

Christ, all night I was thinking how much better it would feel to be dead.

  • YoNastyBunny

Side Note: I’m in the office right now, and I want motherfuckers to stop calling me for shit. Just saying…

    • freakishlystrong

I just left. I kept crying and glaring hard at all the white people going in to the gym. Also can’t look at my coworkers right now.

      • YoNastyBunny

Hopefully this grief stage will blow over soon. I’m just coasting for now. The day’s half-way over for me. Skipping the gym, and watching My Little Pony every night for a while, I guess.

    • House0fTheBlueLights

Yeah, I didn’t go in. Fortunately I mostly work from home, so it’s likely no one will actually notice.

      • YoNastyBunny

I came in only because I have Friday off. And being in a school, and we’re in the final stretch of the semester, it’s been quiet. I haven’t gotten ANY phone calls all week. Why now, damnit!?!?!??

  • Grizz1y

I was wondering to myself if this is what the smart people felt in Germany in 1933, then I realized this is worse. We may also just had a fascist crammed down our throats, but when it happened to them they could at least look at the wreckage of their country from WWI and the Weimar Republic and think, “Well dude may be a bit anti-semitic, but maybe he’ll make this place less of a shithole.” For us we were living in that shining city on the hill. The economy was good. Jobs were good. There were no major wars or threats of them. Then enough people were scared into overlooking that by rampant misogyny, xenophobia, and misplaced classism(they think that they were in the threatened class), and made a mad grab for white privilege thinking that they would be safe from the coming non-existent storm if only they voted for orange-Hitler. Never remembering that those who sow the wind shall reap the whirlwind.

    • Verena Block

Yep. They thought they were getting a strong leader who would fix their problems. The people who are going to get hurt by this first economically are the ones who voted for him. Plenty of other people are just going to get hurt.

    • Carpe Vagenda

So (stop me if you’ve heard this) our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is over?

    • natoslug

The Polish side of my family split into two groups during Hitler’s rise. My grandmother and sister were sent to America to live with an aunt, the rest stayed behind and died in camps. Not sure how I should react to a Trump presidency at the moment.

    • Michael Smith

      Wow, Mitt made a joke!

    • Wee Mousie

Trump said he would mend America’s divisiveness, fix America’s infrastructure and finally get relief for America’s veterans. All this while introducing a large tax cut.

That’s a difficult trick to pull of if you’re not speaking out of your ass.

      • YoNastyBunny

Yeah, and he also said he’d build a wall and make the messicans pay for it… Is this more along those lines???

        • Wee Mousie

Well Trump said what I quoted in his acceptance speech last night, so he can’t just claim it was just one of those election promises one makes to get the hoi palloi excited.

      • ThirdAmendmentMan

Don’t forget he’s also going to bring back high paying manufacturing jobs (that were lost mostly to automation) AND keep prices low!

  • Biel_ze_Bubba

Too early by a decade, maybe? The old white racist shitheads haven’t died off in large enough numbers quite yet. What’s depressing is all the young white racist shitheads taking their places.

    • badhombreinatacotruck

Yeah, they raised up a new crop of haters.

      • YoNastyBunny

“But there is no more racism… except on the left!!!”

      • nightmoth

My cousins are among them. I’m skipping Christmas this year.

      • Pinball or Submission

It feels to me like the new haters are more about nihilistically reveling in the misery of others. Anyone else, for any reason, rather than a deep, committed hatred for one group or another. Not sure if that’s any better.

  • cousin itt

Mrs. itt wondered what to tell her middle and high school students today. In all our years of marriage, I have never seen her so despondent. She works in an inclusive school. The kids were so hopeful.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    • MynameisBlarney

She should tell them “Hey, you kids got a front row seat to watch America go up in flames!”

Sorry…I’m just a weeee bit cynical this morning.

      • AllieQuinn

You know, my millennial coworker has been gleefully talking all year about how he can’t wait for a Trump presidency just so he can have that front row seat to the conflagration. The thing that stuns me about it is that he is an immigrant who is way too brown to be welcome in Trumpland, whose family had need of the ACA during a terrible illness.

I decided to work remotely today after another coworker warned me that he was apparently smugly awaiting my arrival. I’m not in the mood, and I really don’t need that black mark in my HR file.

My sister has been crying all morning, hugging her newborn son and apologizing to him profusely. Both her state and mine went blue, but we still feel hopeless. I’m starting with a bit of a media blackout. I feel like I’ve just been overdosed on so much of the hate that’s been out there, and watching David Duke claim the moral high ground was my breaking point.

I got nothing. I was in Dublin the day after the Bush/Gore election when nobody knew who won, and I wanted to get a job washing dishes just to stay there. This is worse. Bush was stupid, but he had handlers. They made bad decisions, but at least he could be controlled. Trump cannot be controlled.

      • Serai 1

No, she can’t say that. We don’t know what’s going to happen. This could be TEN TIMES worse than anything that’s happened. DO NOT make promises to little kids that you can’t keep. Don’t lie to them about “sure things”. (We already told the kids Hillary was a “sure thing”. Think they won’t notice it turned out different?) Don’t blow smoke up their asses. • Nasty Astraea

I honestly don’t know what that is right now. I’m totally lost.

I wish I had some to give. The only thing that will help right now is supporting one another, being better than the people who inflicted this horrible wound with their votes, and time.

    • Bemused

She should tell them that no matter who the President is the people of America try to do what they believe is best and that even when we absolutely disagree with each-other each of us is doing the best we know how.

No need to visit our own fears and pessimism on the young.

    • Michael Smith

That their courage and resolve is needed now more than ever? The burden isn’t fair, but that doesn’t make it any less real. And, should they stay strong, and use all of their faculties, and bring America back from this shameful episode, that their achievement will be all the greater for the hurdle?

        This ^

I can’t claim credit for this tip as it was posted to Twitter by a parent saying this is how we need to talk to our kids about what happened.

It’s still a good tip – thanks for passing it along.

    • Cheesus Crust

Civics lessons… I sat down with the 16 year old and explained the electoral college to him. I explained all the ramifications of a Trump presidency, the separation of powers, the 3 branches and how our system of checks and balances had just been flushed down the toilet.

I told him he has to vote, always. And not for some pie-in-the-sky candidate who has no chance of winning, but for the person who will best lead this nation and that his “feelings” need not play any role in that decision. He saw his mom and I sit down with our CA ballots this weekend and diligently go through each ballot proposition and debate it. I told him that you can never, ever go wrong with expansions of rights – but to always be wary of people seeking to limit rights, even of those people/groups you may not like… because they won’t always stop with the people you don’t like. I told him that sometimes you have to compromise, and find common ground, with people you may not like – but that it is the only way democracy works.

I think he got the message. He was upset that Hillary didn’t win, and he has seen, first-hand, what ratfucking purity voters can do to an election. He was not happy with Stein/Johnson voters, and I let him get away with a few choice curse words.

    • Serai 1

Treat it as an object lesson on what’s wrong with our democracy, and
encourage them to work to change the things that made this possible. (Leave out the part about how change might not be allowed by the time they’re old enough to change anything.)

That’s another silver lining that probably won’t happen: that someone in the FBI is just so outraged, they release proof that can convict Trump of treason and we can have elections again.

  • Nasty Candy Apple

Do we have to hear her say, “He’s my president, too”? Because I’m not sure I can take that right now.

    • YoNastyBunny

Unfortunately, that motherfucker is “our president”, tpp (Ptuhhhh!!). Let’s hope that he somehow feels the same way about being “our president”. Yeah… wouldn’t bet the house on that either.

I feel like I woke up in a Twilight Zone episode.

This is the results of a generation of kids watching Honey Booboo and the Kardashians and they can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality.

And many years of toxic right wing media.

And many years of the toxic republican establishment.

This is America for now folks but we have to keep fighting the good fight. Never give up! Never surrender!

We got involved in local politics and were cheated by GOP absentee votes. So good luck with that. Sorry—just cannot see any silver linings today.

YES to this. They loved the reality show qualities of the clown parade, helped to marginalize any of the ‘better’ candidates the Repugs had, ignored Bernie until the last few weeks and refused to call the Orange Mop on any of his bullshit lies about HRC. They are complicit, and probably secretly (or not so) thrilled that they’ll be covering this shitstorm for the next 4 years.

As I noted last night, the incompetence and stupidity of the cable teevee infotainment entities cannot be overstated. They have utterly disgraced themselves, and this nation. Nor do I expect that to change on a go-forward basis.

    • Serai 1

I don’t know if I’ll ever watch it, frankly.

  • Ezio

    Well, here’s one thing.

With the Republicans now controlling the Senate and House with a Supreme Court Justice coming up, they are in total control. That means that when things go awry that they have nobody to blame but themselves.

    • theblackdog

Nope, they’ll still blame Obama and Clinton. Also the Trumpers who lose their jobs will blame it on blacks and mexicans.

    • shivaskeeper

Of course they’ll blame it on someone, anyone else. The party of personal responsibility can’t be responsible if things go wrong.

    • Helene Logan

But they’ll manage to spin it to the idiots that it’s all the Dem’s fault. They always do. :-(

    • Biel_ze_Bubba

Ahahaha. Rethugs have never blamed themselves for any of their fuckups.

  • freakishlystrong

No one paid any fucking attention when Paulie Lyan released his “Better Way” agenda. That torpedoes Medicare/Medicaid and SS and disability. Along with the ACA and moar tax cuts for the rich™. And said he needed a Republican President to get it to happen.

    • ThirdAmendmentMan

ACA will be repealed very shortly after Trump takes office. SS disability and Medicaid will be torpedoed very quickly. Massive tax cuts shortly thereafter. Massive cuts to the EPA, USDA, etc. in the next budget. Can’t wait to see the SCOTUS nominee and the GOP complaining about any Dem slowup in passing them through.

      • Biel_ze_Bubba

Dems in the Senate can hold out against the worst nominees, and Trump is not smart enough to outwit them.

    White Won

    http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2016/11/white_won.html

I encourage you to read the whole thing.

Elevator pitch: Last night was an exercise of white power, pure and simple.

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

I’ve been ruminating about this since yesterday, about how we were all getting so up on our high horses about how America’s changing demographics were making the Democratic party unbeatable. But what I think we failed to see is that the Republicans are reshaping themselves as the party of white people, right under our noses, and they’ve succeeded. We can have every minority in America vote for the Dems and it won’t be worth a damn if we’ve lost white America.

We can be mad at white America for being racist, stupid, physically ugly, what have you. But we need them to win elections, and we’re losing them. Hard.

      • smr06va

I’m white and have been a Democrat my entire adult life. So where does that leave me?

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

As am I, though plainly we’ve become the smaller part of our demographic. We have some work to do winning back our friends and relatives, or we really are all doomed.

        • Michael Smith

Alienated like all the other Democrats. Apparently whiteness isn’t as powerful without hate.

        • Marion in Savannah

As deep in the shit as it leaves me.

          • smr06va

I don’t want our Dems in office to just go along quietly — I’m pissed. We need to start working immediately — why didn’t the Obama coalition turn out this time? How could we not know that 3 states would turn red? We need to take back our state and local levels.

  • Hairstrike Alpha

I am in such a terrible mood today, not because the D’s lost and fuck yeah, horse race or whatever stupid tribal bullshit animates some people. I am in a terrible mood because this country or rather high-school dropout dumb white motherfuckers just mainstreamed cruelty, bigotry and white supremacy.

I am ASHAMED to be an American, I am ashamed to be white, I am ashamed to be male. I am ashamed knowing that even though everything is not perfect people animated by pure racial animus decided to flush it all down by electing a corrupt, doddering, mean, bigoted, misogynistic, petty lying fuck face LOSER president.

This was not a middle finger to corruption or some bullshit like that. Nope. Sorry, nope. Donald Trump was considered a fucking joke until he spouted racist shit. Own it. Fuck this country. Fuck the people of this country too. Zero sympathy for anything that follows for poorly educated white people. Fuck you.

    Popular Vote Count Update:
    Hillary: 59,385,563 47.7%
    Fanta Mussolini: 59,213,188 47.5%

Third party & Independents: all less than 5%, so that was a fucking waste of time too.

172,375 more votes for Hillary nationwide, and still counting….

    • Doug Langley

That gives me some reassurance, but did it have to be so goddamn razor close?

    • HazooToo

Why is the electoral college even a thing? Why is the popular vote meaningless? Who planned this system, annd what drugs were they on?

      • DainBramage

I think they were trying to prevent stupid shit like this from happening. But then the political parties got too strong.

        • HazooToo

How was it supposed to prevent this? Who decided how many points each state would get? Why is FLORIDA, the state with screaming mental health problems, so fucking vital?

      • sw19headlesshorseperson

        States rights.
Same reason why California has two Senators and so does Rhode Island.

        • HazooToo

States rights may be all that can save us, now.

        • Doug Langley

For Congress, each state gets 2 and only 2 Senators to represent the elite, but the House gets reps based on population to represent the common people. What any of this has to do with electoral votes, though, I’ve no idea.

Christ, I feel like a pig for even worrying about myself at a time like this. But I can’t help it.

    • Bill D. Burger

Yup! Could be a 101(k) today. ___ First casualty of ‘Making MurriKKKa’ great again.

No point looking until the markets calm down in a week or two. It’ll bounce back. Eventually. (see Brexit panic, also, too)

And remember, those Wall Street fuckers will see a house on fire and think of a way to make money off it.

It’s my great hope that she got her gaggle up really early so they could sit in that room listening to the pretty music and soak up some of that press conference time they wanted so badly.

  • Doug Langley

I’m just too shaken by this.

What? What the fuck happened? I rode out the summer watching all the polls and analysis telling me Hillary had this thing all sewn up. The only question was whether she would win by a little or a lot. Everything fine. Then I watched the numbers last night and wondered what planet I had jumped to. How did all the experts get it wrong? Vote rigging? Russian hacks? Sunspots? UFOs?

    • House0fTheBlueLights

Craven white people who lied to pollsters, plus some effective voter suppression, plus third party candidates. Ladies and gentlemen, your equation for the end of the republic.

      • starkitty

You missed the people who didn’t bother because no way will Trump win….

      • Doug Langley

Don’t know about the third party stuff, Libertarians and Green always run candidates but never got any significant numbers before. The first two, however, are as plausible as anything.

    • Greyhame

Comey. It was the on the razor-thin margin of error that the swing states finally tipped over into Trump’s column.

      • Doug Langley

I heard some reports saying the polls barely changed after Comey’s announcement, but now hearing other reports they changed. I’m lost.

    • Miss Roni Raven If Ya Nasty

If you get a logical answer please share. I got nothing.

    • Mary Sandoras

      FBI?

      • Doug Langley

But even going into Tues morning she was projected to win.

Update: seems Hillary did indeed win the popular vote, so in that sense they were right. But somehow got the Electoral Vote messed up. If the votes were just in different precincts or different states . . .

You know, I’m starting to feel that all they did was flip a coin and that’s the winner.

      • Crank Tango

Not gonna be playing today (though I might be reading). One thing I’d like to suggest, for everyone’s peace of mind, though: If any trolls come crowing, DON’T RESPOND. Seriously, even to say “get out”. Just act as if they’re not there. Let their shitty little comments sit there, all lonely and crying for attention. Just don’t engage them at all. Despite any desire to let loose, really – your blood pressure will thank you if you just don’t let them dance on your head.

I won’t say cheer up, or keep your chin up, or any of that bullshit. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other, and hope there won’t be a war before the year is out.

Peace, kids. I’ma get fucked up and watch Star Trek. Hey, maybe this is the turn that puts on the road to the Enterprise. Didn’t their world suffer devastating wars and destruction before they got their shit together and LEARNED TO BEHAVE?

My BBC channel does a Friday marathon of STOS and they had the Khan episode on last week. Can’t decide if I like the redone digital effects or not. I kept thinking if only Khan was orangeyer and whiteyer and stoopidyer – perfect fit for The Trumphole!

      • MizzMazz

Khan had some dignity in Space Seed. Wrath Khan was completely unhinged, had bad hair, and would go off on nonsensical verbal jags that even had his own people wonder about his sanity….Oh, yeah, got it.

What did you expect to happen when you knowingly and willingly nominated Clinton — a demonstrably guilty federal felon? A proven pathological liar? A corruptocrat of the highest order with *years* of red flags all over everything she touched?

Seriously? Trump is an ass-hat, uncouth braggart that makes you cringe each time he opens his corpulent maw, but unilke Clinton:
He wasn’t shown to have broken all manner of federal security laws, and procedures
He wasn’t under FBI investigation due to perfectly reasonable though self-inflicted probably cause
He wasn’t shown to have a blatantly fraudulent “charitable foundation” to personally enrich himself and his family
He may have lost $1b of his money, but Clinton lost $6billion of *YOUR* money
Trump didn’t overtly abuse the expected “pay to play” political game and not care who knew
And on and on and on…

And whether you can somehow ignore or “explain-away” her faults or if you *boldly* acknowledge them and still don’t care, Clinton herself, by her own selfish actions and ambition for personal power was her own worst enemy, making it all too easy to *righteously* accuse her of all the things she actually did.

What pure, unmitigated GALL you have to be upset that your horribly, devastatingly compromised candidate lost to that ridiculous class clown! If you want to be angry at someone, look in the mirror!!

She didn’t lose because of those things. She lost because Trump motivated the rage and ignorance of people like you.

      • sw19headlesshorseperson

Currently, 180,000 more people voted for Hillary than Trump – and the number’s probably going to go even higher.
If we’re talking narrative here of how “unpopular” she was.

Okay, that’s enough. I’ll be back in a bit. I am not getting any better, and if my digestion gets messed up I won’t be able to accomplish anything today.

But I have hope. Yeah, it’s gonna get burned down. But around our Wonkette I’m seeing shreds of hope, the desire to build up from the wreckage. Maybe this is how it starts.

  • Bitter Scribe

I just got done writing a news brief for my magazine’s website about how three towns in CA plus Boulder, CO passed a tax on sweetened beverages.

  • TundraGrifter

This is probably a poor morning to be making predictions, but Trump’s win is going to be a tough time for the Republican Party. Obviously, he isn’t really a Republican. As President Lincoln asked Gen. McClellan, if you’re not going to use the army may I borrow it?

Trump borrowed the GOP. He still isn’t a “conservative” and The Establishment still can’t stand him. The Tea Party is still upset everything they wanted didn’t just happen because they got a few people elected.

Winning is one thing and governing, getting things done, is quite another. The deep divisions with the Republican Party – fractures – will be rapidly more exposed.

    • Miss Roni Raven If Ya Nasty

Can I have some of what you’re smoking? It’s legal here now or so I am told.

      • TundraGrifter

Mark Shields pointed out last night that Trump didn’t exactly run as a unifying candidate. The Republican Uncivil War rages on (remember – politics got so bitter in Missouri two GOP candidates committed suicide).

Winning and the responsibility of actually governing are tremendous pressures. For years the Republicans have been against a great many things but not exactly for much at all.

        • Mezzaluna

They can keep that up once they set the gerrymandering and voting restrictions in stone. Repeal the ACA might cause some whining, but their base won’t even notice they just made themselves very vulnerable. Overturning Roe v wade and let Christianist bakers discriminate will satisify the theocrats for now.

    • Greyhame

I did joke with a friend about a week ago that it could possibly be even worse for the Republican party to have Trump win. Maybe this is all my fault.

      • TundraGrifter

There are only two things that cause enterprises (from businesses to rock bands) to fly apart – failure and success.

    • sw19headlesshorseperson

Conservatives love being in power. They’ll find a way to make it work. A lot of them don’t even care about doing stuff. They just hate change.
Of course there’ll be a honeymoon while they dismantle Obama’s stuff, and pad SCOTUS, but the conservative rump might start to balk if the Teabaggers start getting uppity.
So, you have a good point.

      • starkitty

And the Tea Baggers will get uppity.

        • sw19headlesshorseperson

Especially now the Freedom Caucus will think they’re the masters of all they survey.

    • starkitty

I wonder if its possible for the GOP to disavow Trump for moral turpitude or false pretences? Even the ones who wanted a party win should be appalled at what’s happing to wall street…

    • Carpe Vagenda

You’re assuming that the Republicans’ wishlist extends past handing out national assets to contributors and packing the Court so they only need to govern for ~20% of the electorate from now on.

I’m not sure what you’re basing that on.

    • Michael Smith

I hope you are right. I’m not sure they care about governing, though. Their number one priority is having someone in the oval office who will say on TV that black people need to pull their pants up and get jobs, that welfare recipients need to be drug tested, that we are at war with Islam, and America is a Christian nation.

As long as he says that, he can do whatever he wants and may damn well be reelected.

    • Biel_ze_Bubba

So they’ll fight over whether to ram through a horrible law or a more horrible law. Somehow, that fails to comfort me.

    • Marceline

The Republican Party doesn’t want to govern. They want to rule. That’s what we have now. Complete Republican rule.

      • TundraGrifter

Uneasy is the brow that wears the crown. That is my point – they think they want to rule. But now they have to make it work.

the trees may bud, the waters run,
      the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe ’tis cloudless night
      and swaying beeches bear
      the Elven-stars as jewels white
      amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey’s end I lie
      in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
      beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
      and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,

  • Walter Wellstone

Look at it this way: Donald has to work for the first time in his life and not in things that have to do with entertainment. Shit got real for him really fast and we should demand results. After all, he wanted the job. Now he need to grow the fuck up and work for all of us because that’s the job description. We all need to make sure they feel the weight of our institutions when they try to go astray. We have a full-time job now keeping him and his people in line. It is our duty as Americans if we want the nation to move forward.

    • Michael Smith

He did seem to really want this job for some reason. You wouldn’t see me running around trying to convince everyone to give me a job that would be way above my abilities and experience. But Trump.. he’s just that kind of guy.

      • Walter Wellstone

Yes, I agree. He got what he wanted. Now he works for us and he needs to deliver and stop whining like the little bitch he is. He needs to grow the fuck up and get to work. That’s what we’re paying him for.

I totally agree! It’s not just him but Congress as well. They’ve been promising more jobs, a better health care plan, lower taxes, reducing the deficit, stronger military, better national security, less gun violence, etc, etc. They’ve got about one year to show some results before the 2018 election cycle starts gearing up.

      • Walter Wellstone

Bluto: What? Over? Did you say “over”? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

      Otter: Germans?

      Boon: Forget it. He’s rolling.

Bluto: And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the goin’ gets tough . . . the tough get goin’! Who’s with me? Let’s go! C’mon! [He runs out of the room screaming but then returns.] What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where’s the spirit? Where’s the guts, huh?! This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you’re gonna let it be the worst! “Ooh, we’re afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble.” Well, JUST KISS MY ASS FROM NOW ON!!! Not me! I’m not gonna take this! Wormer, he’s a dead man! Marmalard, DEAD! Niedermeyer—

Otter: Dead! Bluto’s right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. [Otter stands up.] We gotta take these bastards. Now, we could fight ’em with conventional weapons. That could take years and cost millions of lives. Oh no. No, in this case, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part.

Bluto: And we’re just the guys to do it.

It’s nothing new to say that we sometimes get sub-optimal outcomes because Obama is over-invested in collegiality with the right. I admire his determination to live as if it’s the first day of a better world, but sometimes, JMO, the injuries he’s being big about aren’t his to forgive.

Grey and washed out? I was thinking misty and moody. It’s lovely.

I think it perfectly captures the somber, and almost funerary sentiment today.

Trump’s victory is great news for Congressional Republicans for they are the ones in charge.

  • Truly Madly Derply

I’ve got the sick, hollowed-out feeling in my chest and stomach that accompanies grief. . . for the country to a lesser extent than for Hillary, who deserved better. And my true love Obama. The only solace I can scratch at is the anticipation of witnessing the total implosion of the Republican party. Hopefully from the ashes will emerge something sane and reasonable; perhaps Donald Trump is the global cataclysm that will at last unite us. Sometimes you gotta burn stuff down to the ground so you can build something pure. In the meantime, I love you, Hillary and Rebecca and Evan and Dok and

Sometimes you gotta burn stuff down to the ground so you can build something pure.

I’m sorry, but, respectfully, I disagree with this. I mean, I see it a lot and it seems as much a compositional flourish as a statement of belief. To me, it makes things like this just a little more acceptable than they should be.

    • thixotropic jerk

Okay but first let’s consider– what kind of calculated power is he going to unleash? He has zero idea of how government actually works so it will be the second in commands who are really running the show. Even more than Bush II this “administration” will be run by the behind the scenes yahoos.

      • Bozilingus

We will know who is really in control when we see his Cabinet selections.

The fourty-year campaign to devalue feminism and women’s rights happened. The FUCKING IDIOCY of left-wing women buying into that BULLSHIT happened. “Oh, I don’t call myself a FEMINIST. That’s so ICKY!” “Oh, abortion should ONLY BE a last resort and we should ALWAYS CRY ABOUT IT!” “Oh, our rights are secure – no NEED to be all mannish and fight for things!”

We drowned ourselves, slowly but surely, because WE DIDN’T WANT TO LOOK LIKE BITCHES.

I heard one stat that the median income for a Trump supporter was $70,000.

      • starkitty

There was a study years back challenging the idea it was poor uneducated who fell for Right wing swill. Turned out a lot of privileged educated people were pushing it, volunteering for free. It was counter intuitive because the propaganda they pushed was all about the working man being screwed over but these people had never been economically down in their lives. But they believed it in their minds, or something.

        This take perhaps:
        http://verysmartbrothas.com/i-will-never-underestimate-white-peoples-need-to-preserve-whiteness-again/

In this election, White people did not vote against their self-interests. They may have voted against a self-interest — a few actually — but not their most important one: The preservation of White supremacy. Retaining the value of a Whiteness they believed to be increasingly devalued superseded everything else. Including their own livelihoods; their own physical and financial well-beings; their own Christianity; their own agency; their own money; their own educations; their own futures; their own children’s futures, their own country’s legacy; their own country’s status with the rest of the world; their own environment; their own food, air, and water; their own rights; and their own lives.

And please note that I am not including any qualifiers. For working class Whites. Or Whites from rust-belt cities. Or White men. Or White people who didn’t graduate from college. Or rural Whites. Or Midwestern Whites. Or Southern whites. This is on ALL White people. Who are complicit even if they didn’t vote for Trump. Because they obviously haven’t done enough to repudiate the mindsets existing in their families and amongst their friends; possessed by their co-workers and neighbors; shared during private holiday gatherings and public city townhalls. Who have shown us that nothing existing on Earth or Heaven or Hell matters more to them than being White and whichever privileges — real or fabricated; concrete or spiritual — existing as White in America provides.

        • thixotropic jerk

          Racism is a mental illness

          • YoNastyBunny

Saying that it’s a mental illness would almost be too kind. It is a very irrational yet calculating systemic social issue. Yeah, we can blame individuals for not coming to terms with their own bigotry, but the real problem might be that our society doesn’t go far enough in counteracting those inclinations.

I blame white people in general, but Hillary won white women w/college degrees, and I think won white men w/college degrees (I’m too pissed to look it up), and all other groups. Not to the degree she should have, given that no women or POC should have voted for Trump, but white people without degrees went for him yoougely.

        • Serai 1

Like I said, a LOT more educated people voted for Trump than you think.

Seriously. We’re done. We just installed a white supremacist, anti-Semitic fascist with ties to Russia in the White House and there’s no checks from any other branch of government. There’s no “It gets better.” It doesn’t. This isn’t something the country bounces back from.

      • Vincent Ricola

Yeah. I have no optimism left. I’m in my “end days” phase.

      • Stulexington

GOTV for the Senate. Roll up your sleeves for the Midterms. This round was a staggering blow, and there’s going to be a lot of damage, but please don’t give up.

        • Marceline

You assume there’s going to be midterms.

      • starkitty

It will bounce back–look at Germany–but the system of government is probably finished. Unfortunately we don’t have the Allies to manage this process.

        • thixotropic jerk

You make it sound so easy. Remember what happened in-between Austria and Germany’s elections and the “bounce back?” Not. Good. Things.

          • starkitty

And that little thing called the Third Riech in the middle. Hey I didn’t say it was an easy bounce….
I understand people’s pessimism, it is completely justified. But some things asserted are incorrect. It doesn’t help to over state the badness of the situation. We need brutal realism, sure, but not nihilism.

          • thixotropic jerk

Well, I am just in lick-my-wounds mode, you do you SK! I am sure I will surface eventually but I will be constantly looking over my shoulder for several years.

          • starkitty

Perfectly reasonable. Be doing the same on that last count.

    • Grendel

Depends on how you feel about Facism. If you’re a fan, woo hoo!

        • Stulexington

Where can I find the matching brown pants?

I hope all of us were wearing brown pants last night… if not they’re at least partially brown today

    • Nasty Suffragette

I cried in 2004, but this is a million times worse.

      • Grendel

This is a lot like 2004. In 2004 the evangelicals came out to stop abortion. In 2016 the racists came out because “dey took er jerbs!”

  • Shoto

Secretary Clinton could not have been more eloquent, gracious and classy.
I’m not sure the superlatives exist, but whatever they are – yeah, that
    too.

    • cmd

Yes. She’s still on the floor hugging people and being nice. I remember after I saw her at a rally last month, I went in the local convenience store and a little kid was telling someone how she stayed a long time taking selfies with people, which she had.

Well they’re looking forward to paying zero taxes in the near future.

      • suziq

Ha! Won’t they be confused when only the billionaire class doesn’t have to pay taxes because of their very best classy offshore tax shelters. If any of those “regular blue collar workers” think they are going to have lower taxes they are as stupid as I always thought they were. But of course, it will be Obama’s fault.

        • nightmoth

Oh, they’re fully as stupid as you always thought they were. Hope they enjoy working those jobs the Mexicans took away from them. Wonder how long they can make the payments on their big ass pickup trucks working for below minimum wage and with no health insurance?

    • Kavefish

What the fucking absolute fuck is *wrong* with those people?

    • cmd

Really? I keep trying to feel like going high, not low, and not hating these people but I am not doing so well at it today.

    • Marceline

Of course, she’s the Wall Street candidate, right? I hate so many of my countrymen.

  • Rick Hill

There are no checks and balances. Only brief stops as republicans ensure they get paid for their consience and moral high ground

  • Nasty Suffragette

Fucking Wolf Blitzer. I lunged for the remote as soon as she finished, but not before I heard him say that she was choking back tears the whole time and that she is “well known” for getting “very emotional” at times like these. He made it sound like she barely made it through the speech. Grrr. Meanwhile I was sitting here marveling at what strong stuff she is made of. She wasn’t weepy and didn’t even look tired. I just don’t know how she does it.

    • cmd

I hate Wolf, hated him last night. Watched it at work on C-Span and now they just have her hugging all the people with Bruce Springsteen tape playing in the background. Fuck Wolf, she wasn’t weepy (although I was). And she was a lot more gracious and inspirational than I could ever have been (or than Trump would ever be).

    • Nasty Astraea

She literally cannot win with these people. SHe’s either an emotional wreck or an emotionless robot.

      • Grendel

She’s either too emotional or a cold bitch. That’s the two options for a woman in power.

        • Serai 1

That’s the two options for ANY woman.

  • ZangoCrudmonger

      yes

    • But a million times worse. Also, for me, added bonus hangover

    • Vincent Ricola

I’ve said it a million times this morning, I’ll say it again, America lost the cold war last night. I have a really hard time seeing how we come back.

    • ChicagoLovesYou

This is so much worse. W was a crappy President, but I honestly believe he was a decent man in way over his head who surrounded himself with shitbags.

      • thixotropic jerk

        • starkitty

This is what Trump will be hated for–making Bush look good.

          • suziq

ONE of the things he will be hated for. And I think Bush finally realised he was being manipulated by Cheney…after 7 years. Which is why he hasn’t done anything political except a speech or two for Jeb! Trump will be a billion times worse than Bush II. And we are so screwed. 2018 better turn every state ever bright fucking blue so Trump takes his ball and goes home like a regular quitting governor Palin.

          • thixotropic jerk

You don’t think Brushy II’s “artwork” is political?

    • Rick Hill

This is worse. This time every deplorable person is crowing, revelling in their hatred and desire for dominance

  • NastyBossetti

Sometimes, when I feel useless and rudderless and hopeless, I read these last few lines of Tennyson’s “Ulysses:”

    Come, my friends,
‘T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’
We are not now that strength which in old days
    Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

    • Serai 1

Nice, but we have no “better world” to sail to. This is all we’ve got.

      • NastyBossetti

Sure, but sailing off isn’t the only way to seek a better world. We could keep trying to improve the one we’ve got.

        • Grendel

          • AnnieGetYerFun

How can a metaphor hurt? Please explain. This is news to me.

          • Wee Mousie

Not a metaphor. A nice slow one-way trip as one of the first Mars Colonists doesn’t sound so inimical now, does it.

    • AnnieGetYerFun

      Thank you. That helped.

  • DantesE

Thanks Editrix I’m crying too. A couple of thoughts. What happens when true to form the cheeto does not keep his promises? Those bottom dwellers will be the first ones impacted by teabaglicon policies. We’ll see if they’ll bend over like good little boys and take the non lubed sideways rat fucking they voted for. Due to lack of brains maturity and attention span most of the day to day running of the government will fall to pince. Now darth cheney was evil incarnate but he was not stupid. pince on the other hand is very very stupid. Disaster will follow disaster until by 2018 hopefully it will be enough to get those lazy bastards off their asses and actually vote in the mid term. Also too never under estimate the power of stupid. cheeto and his party have more than enough rope now let’s see what nice knots they make with it.

    • Grendel

It will be Obama’s fault, of course

    • Rick Hill

What happens? Well, private prison stocks are up…

    • Marceline

When The Dummald Does It It Is NOT Mistake, m’kay?

  • starkitty

Okay the Irish aren’t pissing about:

Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. election is being viewed with shock and revulsion in Ireland.

The country is close to the Clintons and fearful of Trump’s campaign pledge to confront U.S. companies using Ireland as a tax shelter.
The Irish Times branded the New York businessman a “misogynistic racist liar” who would fan instability overseas and intolerance at home.

Irish Times columnist Fintan O’Toole wrote Wednesday: “The republic of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt is now the United Hates of America.”

“President Trump is the creation of the same demographic that gave Europe its far-right authoritarian movements with such disastrous consequences for the world,” he wrote.

    • Grendel

Ireland is moving up my list

      • nightmoth

Already been considering it. Along with New Zealand and Denmark. Maybe Belize or Costa Rica. Canada, of course, but I bet Canada’s already fielding real estate buyers from Americans with sense.

        • Serai 1

I might consider Ireland if they stop killing women by refusing medical care.

          • nightmoth

Yeah–there is that. Didn’t the Indian woman’s death cause a change in the law, or is that wishful thinking?

          • Serai 1

            Haven’t heard.

      • Wee Mousie

Ireland is a great deal for writers, and if you don’t like the weather, wait ten minutes.

    • JustDon’tSayDittos

Ummm, I’m down with not using Ireland as a tax shelter also, too, as well. If that’s the motivation behind that editorial, they can FOAD. But I bet it’s not.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

Yeah, I’m wondering which tax shelter Trump prefers, and why it isn’t Ireland.

        • JustDon’tSayDittos

I think you have to manufacture something or at least license patents for the Ireland thing to work. When has Drumpf ever actually made a thing?

          • AnnieGetYerFun

Don’t be silly! He put a hill in front of a guy’s house to block the guy’s view of the ocean because the guy had complained about Trump’s golf course.

    • Apple Scruff

Honestly, I think very little of what he promised will actually happen.

      • DT

He has all branches of government. We are fucked beyond all measure. America will be destroyed.

        • Wee Mousie

Don’t forget that except for errant Teahadists, the Republican Party could not quite pull the trigger on endorsing Trump, and meanwhile Trump is SWTRINO (Something Worse Than Republican In Name Only),

The House, The Senate and the White House may be as uncooperative in the coming four years as they have been in the past eight.

          It’s unlikely, but it’s possible.

          • DT

They will fall in line unless he goes for revenge against them. Which I hope he does with all my heart.

          • Wee Mousie

I also, but Trump may not exactly have to start it. He has already said some mighty cutting remarks against much of the party leaders, and Trump isn’t the only thin-skinned Republican, now is he?

          • DT

Oh holy god, the fate of the nations rests on Miss Lindsey’s shoulders. I am sobbing uncontrollably again.

      • Serai 1

Most of what he promised isn’t even possible. But don’t think the wingnuts won’t happily bankrupt the entire country while trying.

      • starkitty

That’s no good! The Tea Baggers will riot if they don’t see a wall! And a recipe saying Mexico paid for it!

  • Jenny, Manocidal Vagendiac

I dunno guys, I evidently look like death today, but being told that just lit the fire again.

I plan on buying a shit ton of ice tea and spending the next year haughtily looking down on the media and the public when they hit buyers remorse. You break it, ya buy it GOP.

Then get back to supporting, campaigning, and voting for candidates who want to get back to the proper century.

  • Apple Scruff

I hear a guy on the radio this morning say that Hillary’s problem was trying to “appeal to common people” when she gets paid $100,000 for speeches and wears $12,000 coats.

And Donald Trump who brags about how much money he (doesn’t) have, has a penthouse dripping in gold, is so fucking blue collar?

This is what I don’t get.

    • YoNastyBunny

Evidently “blue collar” = ignorant, racist, sexist, homophobic asshole… I guess.

      • Well, that was what the Blue collar comedy tour led me to believe

      • nightmoth

        They’ve earned the stereotype.

      • Serai 1

It’s hard to feel sympathy for people who slit their own throats.

    • Grendel

Also the people who won’t vote for Hillary because she’s a liar… and then vote for Trump?

      • Thiazin Red

The guy who is literally on trial for fraud. More than one.

      • Kavefish

Yeah – voting for him because honesty and integrity is important to them.

      • Wee Mousie

You must admit, Trump really paid his dues, with all the work he put in borrowing his first million from his father.

    • thixotropic jerk

But see, he’s such a brilliant bizniz guy he earned all that $$$$! By stealing it from the rubes like the guy on the radio natch!

      • Apple Scruff

Right??? Ugh, he’s even a shitty bizness man!! He has no redeeming qualities!

        • miss_grundy

Nope, I agree. And also, black guy in office. Can’t continue to disrupt the status quo with a woman next. Duh.

      • miss_grundy

Yeah, and we all live in a penthouse done up in crass Louis XIV furniture and wall hangings, with gold dripping everywhere. Yeah…..

    • Kavefish

I’ve never thought I’d hear so many excuses for “I refuse to vote for a woman as president”.

      • qadesh

The usual response is “I am not against her as a woman, my antipathy is principled”. yeah, right. Name one thing you have against her that isn’t based on 30 years of rightwing hatred and propaganda.

    • qadesh

but, according to a friend’s brother-in-law, he is “for the common man”. I asked the fool how he even for a second believed that to be true, since the apricot asshole has screwed every single person who has ever worked for him. Of course, there was no answer.

Suggestion (I did this right after starting the coffee): Couch. Afghan (blanket, not dog). Dogs*. Stackup: Couch, you, afghan, dogs. Close eyes, stroke dogs. Steep self in doggies for 15 minutes. Repeat as needed (I have to wait; doggies are enjoying mid-morning nap).

*edit: could be afghans, I suppose

      • Nasty_ahughes798_woman

You did the heavy lifting I couldn’t Callyson! All I could do was donate. You did the real work! We need to re-group, organise, and have at ’em in 2018. I am coping by having my tall, frosty coca-cola, curling up on the couch with 3 or 4 of the cats, taking a couple of 5mg tablets of valium and watching Velocity on the TV.

    • Huge hugs for you and the puppies cally!

    • Jen B_VA

Cally, you were amazing and tireless and I entirely credit you and your team with bringing us Nevada.
We fell short elsewhere. We overestimated and got cocky. Now we regroup, treat our wounds, and get ready. We lost a battle- a very big battle and it will take time and energy to recoup from this- but it was a battle.

    • Nasty Suffragette

You inspired people you don’t even know (like me) to go out and phone bank. So thank you for everything that you did.

    • Nastyinencinitas

Callyson you turned out the vote. That was your job and you did it. You helped good down-ballot people win.

    • Serai 1

Don’t even think about blaming yourself, honey.

    • mancityhombres

Hard work that needed to be done, and you stepped up.
It’s hard when you put so much effort into it and then, this.
It’s going to be different after January, I’ll give you that. The thought of a Trump administration scares me more than a little. It makes me look back fondly on Reagan and W.
      We will get through this.

    • The Librarian

You’re a true hero Callyson. Please stay.

    • shoeflyin

Yes, our pets can be our salvation. I don’t think I could have slept last night, except the kitty in the picture lay on me and purred until I could relax. Don’t give up, we need to take a break and then come back ready to fight again.

What happens with the racketeering trial?

    • Stulexington

      Presidential pardon?

    • Kavefish

Will Trump pardon himself? That’ll be a neat little Three Card Monte.

      • beavertank

It’s a civil trial, so there’s no pardon. It’s also over conduct long before he became president, so there’s no possibility of using presidential immunity.

        • Kavefish

Pfffftt… details… Everyone knows The Donald is a big-picture guy!

    • Thiazin Red

I think it starts next week.

    • miss_grundy

I think it begins after Thanksgiving. It should be interesting. Let’s see if he is found guilty of running a criminal organization. If he is found guilty, could he be impeached?

  • Bill Slider

The Obama daughters just might decide it’s time to convince Mamma that she has to go for it in 2020.

Would be nice if Michelle runs for office in a few years

      • doktorzoom

Not for her, it wouldn’t :(

      • miss_grundy

She isn’t political. Leave her alone. She has put up with enough racism and bigotry for the rest of her life. Now that the election is over, she will have the girls pack up their rooms and she will start packing up personal items and move to the house they will be renting while Sacha finishes high school. She will have a foundation, work on boards, give speeches and enjoy her life. That is what is best for her.

    • Grendel

yes, please… but I don’t think she likes dealing with the spotlight or the idiots on the other side

      • Serai 1

I think her daughters’ safety would be the biggest impediment.

    • ThaagNasty

Duckworth, if Michelle won’t be a thing. Duckworth can do it. Plus she’s a fucking war hero, sharp as a room full of tacks, etc.

      • thixotropic jerk

That could work (makes notes to check out her policies more)

  • AnnieGetYerFun

I sincerely believe that this boils down to two things:

    1. An amazingly effective 30-year Conservative campaign against Hillary Clinton.
    2. A backlash against Black Lives Matter and against anyone who dares to stand up and say “I’m being treated badly because of who I am, and it isn’t right.”

    • Serai 1

      3. A raging narcissist bully got his fee-fees hurt, and a bunch of mendacious shitheads took advantage of that.

    • Apple Scruff

      4. A backlash to dare having a black man in the White House.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

I thought about that – but (and this is anecdotal) I had heard of so many white people who voted for Obama (both times!) that voted for Trump this time. And I couldn’t think of what could have swung their votes so far on the political spectrum. I mean, they voted to have a black man in charge, so it couldn’t be that they are Klan members, right? But there was just ENOUGH horror at BLM’s message and just enough butthurt in response to it, that it makes me feel like perhaps it’s one thing to have a black guy in charge, but once he’s in charge, some people don’t wanna hear about racism anymore. Oh, there’s still racism? No, there’s not, I voted for Obama! Well, fuck it, you ingrates, now I’m voting Trump.

  • Nastyinencinitas

I’m going into escape mode but I’ll probably be making all my Christmas presents. When the shock wears off.

  • ThaagNasty

I’m sick, my cat’s sick, now this.
At least Col Duckworth made Congress.
At least CA, NV, and MA now allow you to grow a fucking plant and use it as you please.
At least Sheriff Shitpants no longer has a job.
At least WA, AZ, CO, and ME raised their minimum wage significantly.

I have to grasp at the small victories.

People keep saying we’ll fight, but I don’t see how we fight that half the country has repudiated so many of the things America is supposed to mean. How do you fight not giving a shit about decency, or not believing in equality? How do you fight someone’s being so selfish they’ll vote for a dangerously uninformed and unbalanced laughingstock?

I don’t want to fight, I want to leave. I want to put my shoulder to a wheel that’s turning in the right direction. I want to make common cause with people who don’t repudiate my ideals. .

    • Nasty Astraea

It’s like we have to redo the 60s all the fuck over again.

      • Serai 1

Pray it’s not like the 40’s, and the rest of the world has to beat US down.

        • Seccessiony-Katie

Some variant of that is 100% my fear.

          • Serai 1

After this election, I have no faith whatsoever in the “we’ll get them from within” bullshit. We TRIED that – and here we are.

        • ExpatGirl

They can’t beat us down. It will have to come from within. More 1861 than the 1940s. Only this time, we are the rebels.

        • starkitty

          Maybe economically, not literally.

          • Seccessiony-Katie

We’ve elected a thin skinned authoritarian who stands for nothing, knows nothing, and falls to flattery every fucking time. We’ve given him control over every branch of government with only the spineless lickspittles that failed to check him until now to block him. We gave him control over a military that seems to be on board.

I don’t think we’ve elected Hitler, but I think we may have elected Mussolini.

Look at the Rand Corp scenarios for what happens if Russia decides to take back more territory. And ponder that they assume we’d oppose it.

          • starkitty

I agree he’s more like Mussolini, than Hitler or Franco. Hell, Franco could keep things going a while. I just don’t see how Trump can. You have a link to the Rand Corp stuff/

          • Seccessiony-Katie

            Rand’s write up
            https://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/research_reports/RR1200/RR1253/RAND_RR1253.pdf

And a more general discussion of them as part of what his Presidency may look like http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/09/26/president-trumps-first-term

The key quote from the New Yorker:
Russian forces reached the outskirts of the Estonian and Latvian capitals in as little as thirty-six hours. The larger shock was the depth of destruction. American forces, which would deploy from Germany, Italy, and elsewhere, are not heavily armored. “In twelve hours, more Americans die than in Iraq and Afghanistan, combined, in sixteen years,” Shlapak said. “In twelve hours, the U.S. Air Force loses more airplanes than it’s lost in every engagement since Vietnam, combined.”

          • starkitty

            Thx

          • Serai 1

The only reason Franco could keep things going for decades is that nobody gave a shit about Spain, a pissant country that hasn’t been anywhere near world power for four hundred years. (My family’s from Spain, so I know whereof I speak.) If you think everyone’s going to ignore what’s going on here, when we’ve got more fucking nuclear weapons than the next twenty countries combined – well, that’s some Olympic-level blinkeredness right there.

          • starkitty

            Um…no, I don’t think that…Why would I??

          • Serai 1

So? You seem to forget how Trump’s rise has emboldened his fellows across the globe. We’re going to see a lot MORE rightwing dictators in the next few years. So Trump isn’t Hitler (maybe) – SOMEBODY ELSE WILL BE. What side do you think Trump will take in that little game? So we won’t be Germany, instead we’ll be Italy, and THE WORLD WILL STILL FIGHT AGAINST US.

          • Seccessiony-Katie

            I don’t disagree with you.

          • Serai 1

DO NOT bet on that. Seriously. Trump would LOVE to get us into a world war. And this time, there’s no guarantee we’d get help.

          • starkitty

No one is betting on that. I hate to be that person…but calm the fuck down. Or at least aim your ire accurately.

          • Serai 1

Calm DOWN? FUCK YOU. There are ENOUGH fucking wingnut trolls running around with that shit for me to put up with anyone on our side slinging it.

            GOOD. FUCKING. BYE.

          • starkitty

Back at you. Guess what[expletive], you being mad don’t give the the right to lie about what someone is saying. And yeah, once you start doing that, you need to BACK OFF. So, if you can articulate WHAT EXACTLY I said that was so offensive and incorrect to justify GOING OFF AT ME FOR NO FUCKING REASON…yeah, sure…I’m listening…..

I’ve been an antif fascist since I was 13. I’ve come from a challeging back ground and I don’t take shite off anyone.

OH AND I CAN USE CAP LOCKS TOO.
            Charmed I’m sure.

          • starkitty

Oi? Still there? Still care to explain exactly what “with that shit” you were referring to that could possibly be mistaken for a “wing nut troll”?

          • starkitty

NOT LETTING THIS GO. YOU IMPLIED I WAS AN APOLOGIST FOR FASCISM. OR SOMETHING.

You. Have. No. Idea. What. You. Did.

Just because I’m no giving into nihilism and emoting my depression DOES NOT MEAN I don’t understand how serious this is. On the contrary, I know it means you ha e to keep your head level under fire. Sorry you’re interpreting that as ‘la la la it’s no a problem’.

Or I would be sorry, IF YOU DIDN’T IMPLY I WAS A FASCIST.

          • starkitty

Oh and have you ever ACTUALLY fought Nazis and racists? I have. I don’t look forward to dealing with them again, but I guarantee “oh we’re doomed” will not get the work done.

          • starkitty

So you’re really going to make me demand an explanation later? Because I will. No one lies about me or implies I’m a fascist. And if that isn’t what you meant, well, WELCOME TO MY WORLD.

    • ExpatGirl

South Africa defeated Apartheid by hundreds of different community groups banding together for resistance. It wasn’t easy but they never gave up.

      • Wee Mousie

Of course South Africa didn’t have the world’s largest, best equipped military, or a commander-in-chief who thinks posse comitatus is something by which you grab good looking women.

      • Lara

Yeah, but they weren’t up against a woman who sent and received EMAILS!

    • dshwa

I’ll be optimistic for a very quick moment. Implicit bias racism, misogyny and bigotry carried the day yesterday, because it was given two frameworks to coalesce around so that the voters wouldn’t have to acknowledge those traits in themselves; one that Hillary was OK to vote against because she was corrupt (yes, it’s all lies and spin, but that’s another discussion) and the second that Trump could restore small town America and its one factory towns, and its conservative Christian 1950’s values to the country. The second part is undeliverable. Millennials (and younger) largely reject the homophobia and misogyny of those traditional Christian values, and they’re growing as a percentage of population while the values crowd dies off. And those factory jobs are not coming back, because even if Trump were to magically get companies to close ever factory that’s moved overseas in the last 30 years and rebuild them here, due to improvements in technology those factories will require far less employees than when they closed, and many of the jobs they will require are not blue collar jobs, but programmers, technicians, and other people who can keep that technology running. 4 years from now, regardless of what Trump says or does, he can’t deliver on that second part. Secondly, Republicans now control all 3 branches. There’s no one else to blame when he can’t deliver. So in 2020, the year of censuses and congressional district redrawing, that backlash could sweep democrats into office all over the country. That gives us the chance to undo the gerrymandering of the last 10 – 20 years and break the center right of the Republican party’s fear of being primaried as their biggest concern over losing their seats in congress. So yes, this could actually eventually work out OK in the long run.

Of course, it could be a very long and very bad 4 years.

      • Seccessiony-Katie

I agree with all that, and go one further: if Trump
