Mateen's father.
Mateen’s father.

Yesterday, Donald Trump opened his mouth and — in the most charitable interpretation, because we are Charity Itself — made a “joke” about gun nuts killing Hillary Clinton to stop her from repealing the Second Amendment. This was, for real, shocking, and everybody on the Internet fell down. Even Senator Jeff Sessions (R – SO BAD) was all “nuh uh, nope, not okay, nyet.” (Just kidding. He said Donald Trump never meant that, but okay, you shouldn’t joke about it. Baby steps!)

So what did CNN spend half of its time on yesterday afternoon? (Literally half its time — the other 50 percent went to Trump surrogates yelling that we should be talking about the economy instead of Donald Trump’s hilarious “jokes” about assassinating Hillary Clinton, while mild-mannered Republican women tried to get a word in edgewise that we COULD be talking about the economy except DONALD TRUMP HAD JOKED ABOUT ASSASSINATING HILLARY CLINTON, and so that was KINDA ON HIM. They did not use caps when they were talking though, only the loud Trump boors did that, and then the Trump boors called the GOP ladies “Democrats,” because that’s how you do.)

Let me answer that question, the one way back at the beginning of the last paragraph, for you! CNN spent literally half its time Tuesday afternoon on the Clinton campaign “shooting itself in the foot,” with the “unforced error” of having the Orlando shooter’s dad show up uninvited to its Orlando rally and then letting him inside, where he was caught on camera over Clinton’s shoulder. How did he get there? (It was open to the public; also, we are guessing, probably “in a car.”) Did the Clinton campaign invite him? (No.) Did someone put him up on that stage, where it looked like he was close to Clinton but he wasn’t, and where staff usually put a rich “tapestry” of folks to show the varied demographic support for a candidate? (Apparently.) Did they know it was the Orlando shooter’s dad? (Undoubtedly not.)

I watched this same segment at least seven times, which is why I don’t watch TV news, and each time I got angrier, and the remote control was really far away.

The shooter’s dad, Seddique Mateen, is a little bit of an asshole. The Clinton campaign has said no thank you for your nice endorsement, we’re good.

Cher in particular thinks the Trump people invited Mateen to the event; he was wearing a very bright red hat, which seems an odd fashion choice at a Clinton rally unless you really want to be noticed. However, while I like a false flag as much as the next girl, Occam’s Razor would suggest the Muslim dude is not a Trump fan, and is more likely a Hillz fan, even though, again, he is an asshole.

Did that stop CNN from spending LITERALLY HALF ITS AFTERNOON on the story, and my husband wasn’t even home and I didn’t have any drugs?

Fuck you CNN, except Tapper, I like you, you’re cool.

But isn’t CNN the left wing version of Fox News? I mean that’s what I always get told

CNN iz no wing version uv vulture.

  • Indiepalin

You need to make sure you have drugs if you are going to be watching this goatfuck for any length of time. Have you tried shatter?

  • Spotts1701

Thanks bigly, CNN. You’re doing yeoman’s work trying to adhere to “both sides do it” to keep the ratings goosed because Trump is sinking faster than a torpedoed destroyer.

    • tomamitai

And no matter how far they bend over to try to counter charges of liberal bias, the RWNJs will still call them the Communist News Network.

    • OneYieldRegular

My guess is that CNN is opportunistically trying to rush into the open hole left by the Roger Ailes scandal so that they can become the next FOX News.

  • (((JustPixelz)))

“….the remote control was really far away.”

Remote controls should come with a device or a way to let you use them from far away.

I always make sure I have my phone near me. Not only does it have a remote app, but if I don’t want to be bothered to flip through screens to find it, I can always text one of the kids to come downstairs and change the channel for me.

    • memzilla

How many people do I speak for who were themselves used as the remote controll? Geez, Dad would holler for me from the other side of the house to turn that fershlugginer knob. And bring him a back of Pall Malls.

      • Jennaratrix

*Raises hand.* Luckily for me, back in the 70s and 80s where we lived, we didn’t have cable, so I would only have to flip through 6 channels.

      • Aquaria

I was the eldest child, but, once my brothers were the age I was when I got assigned TV changer duties, I pitched a fit that it was their turn. Shit rolled downhill, and my youngest brother became channel-changer, because youngest.

    • Cindyinencinitas

Is it her heart or did she rip it from Vince Foster’s soon-to-be lifeless body? IS THAT WHY SHE KILLED HIM?????

      Horse something, anyway.

  • AngryKatie

I’m starting to wonder if perhaps the news anchors have stopped listening to the words coming out of the Trumple-surrogates mouth holes at this point.

I’ve found that my brain has a self defense mechanism that’s started to kick in where they just sound like the teacher in Peanuts cartoons.

  • (((JustPixelz)))

The only story on Fox “News” is Hillary’s emails. Also BENGHAZIII!!!! moms suing Hillary.

  • Vecchiojohn

Kind of an asshole. So, a moderate Muslim terrorist?

  • AngryBlakGuy

    …both sides do it!!!

    • Jennaratrix

Ugh, this stupid non-sequitur. Just so perfect for completely derailing any rational discussion.

    • Vegan and Tiara

Nope, the other side puts their terrorists ON the stage.

  • baconzgood

I just gotta say no matter what or why this is super bad optics

    • AngryKatie

But it’s easily spun: unlike the Trump campaign, we don’t prohibit people we disagree with from attending our events.

      • Jennaratrix

The motherfucking DEFINITION of democracy. Not that Pmurt or any his people a) know that, or b) are actually trying to maintain one.

    • ltmcdies

or it’s an example of the American Constitution in practice, isn’t it.

Democrats demonstrating they love all the amendments not just the 2nd

      • natoslug

Given what Republicans usually say about it, I don’t think they know shit about Amendment #2.

      • baconzgood

        It’s bad optics.

        • ltmcdies

just for the sake of discussion…how does a campaign vet every person who comes into an arena.

          • baconzgood

All I said was it was bad optics.

  • lucidamente

Wolf Blitzer: is he as dumb as a brick. Stay tuned for a Wonkette Special Report.

    • AngryKatie

I’m fascinated by the continued employment of both Blitzer and Chris Matthews.

    • Daisy

Brick libelz. Bricks everywhere are insulted for being compared to Wolf Blitzer.

    • OneYieldRegular

I am just glad that Wolf Blitzer’s job isn’t something like “commercial airplane pilot” or “radiation oncologist” or “nuclear power plant operator.”

  • natoslug

Inviting him to the rally was bad enough, but did they then need to shine a spotlight on him and leave Clinton in the dark like that?

    • ltmcdies

I’m gonna give yah the “optics” argument because it’s politics and optics do matter.

but…is this man been charged with something? Convicted of something? Does not the American Constitution speak to things like freedom of assembly etc, etc

this is more anti Muslim bullshit from the right wing and that’s all it is.

the answer to this is….regardless of what his son did, this man has a constitutionally protected right to sit where ever he wants.

it’s one of those …the right loves the constitution except when it doesn’t

      • natoslug

I don’t even believe the optics argument. Like you, and many others have said, he has as much a right to be there as anybody else. Unlike Trump rallies, Clinton doesn’t act like a paranoid fuck and screen out anyone who doesn’t agree 107%* with his message. BUT I’M NOT LETTING FACTS GET IN THE WAY OF A FUCKING JOKE!!!!1!!!!ONE!!!1!!!111!!ELEBENTY!!!!1

        *Fox Math

    • (((JustPixelz)))

      I do.

    • Jennaratrix

WE do. It’s our journalists who are having difficulty with that concept.

  • beatbort

Did Cher really use a toilet symbol for “Trump”?
I may have to take back all the, or, some of the nasty things I’ve said about her over the years.

    • MrCanoehead

I’ve never had anything bad to say about her, except “Sonny Bono? Really?”

  • Gayer Than Thou

Let me see if I understand this properly: someone at CNN looks at the face of very person in the crowd at every Hillary rally to see if someone embarrassing is in the audience, but no one pays much attention to the demonstrably unpresidential, vile things that Trump says? It’s almost like some kind of a metaphor for the different standards women and men are put to.

    • Toadette

That about sums it up, yes.

    • ShriekinViolet

      “Trump threatened to kill Clinton.”

“Oh, yeah?! Someone who was related to a bad person was near Clinton one time! Check mate!”

      • Cindyinencinitas

      • anwisok

        Seems fair to me.

    • Actually it was some local TV station (WPTV?) that noticed him, and ran a story about it. The usual sites picked up and pushed it. Then CNN got involved.

  • beatbort

CNN is still in withdrawals from the missing Indonesian jet.
    They can’t help themselves.

  • Jennaratrix

I hate to break it to everyone (you might want to sit down) – but some of the people who support Hillary are not nice people! I KNOW! But there it is. At least she says, “Yeah, thanks for your endorsement, I guess, but not so much.” Unlike Pmurt, who claims not to know who David Duke is when he’s endorsed by him.

    • OneYieldRegular

      This.

    • Has she said that about Morell and the 50 Republican warmongers?

      • Jennaratrix

Did they explicitly endorse her, or just say that Pmurt is an idiot? Not that it really matters; Hillary is herself not opposed to war if she thinks that it’s necessary. Unless you’re completely anti-war under any circumstances (which I personally believe is naive and unrealistic, but I’m a military historian so take that for what it’s worth), your quibble with Hillary is with whether or not the war is/was justified.

        • More of the latter I think, but at this point every “against X” is implicitly “for Y”.

Its not that I oppose war. Just when people who scurried into think tanks after playing a part in the Iraq mess come out and get involved in election campaign – it seems more like ratfucking than genuine support.

          • Jennaratrix

Yeah, that’s fair. But on the flip side of that, you could make the argument that these guys (and they are all guys, right? I’m sure) know more about defense in this country than just about anyone else; whether we agree with their decisions or not is a different issue, but they do have a lot of experience. And if they think DJT is a fucking idiot when it comes to national defense… well, they’d definitely know. Some from personal experience.

I also don’t necessarily buy the “Against Y is For X” argument; see Susan Collins.

  • wide_stance_hubby

I’d be feeling pretty bad right now if Cher just put me in my place on Twitter and I’m not even an enormous news organization what wishes it had integrity and shit.

    • Toadette

I’m pretty sure everyone lost respect for CNN the moment Wolf said “And let’s see what Twitter has to say.”

      • wide_stance_hubby

I lost it during 9/11 coverage when a host asked a guest if they’d “like to speculate on these assumptions.”

      • yyyaz

I’m pretty sure everyone lost respect for CNN the moment Wolf said “And let’s see what Twitter has to say.” was promoted to anchorman.

      • Vienna Woods

And John Oliver, and Stephen Colbert, and Larry Wilmore, and Trevor Noah, and Seth Myers. They are all pleading with their viewers not to vote for Trump. In other words, the comedians are the responsible ones here.

        • I Only Like Cats

Trevor Noah and Larry Wilmore have been BernieBros from the get go (which caused some of wonkers to stop watching), call Clinton the lesser of two evils, are shocked she is a presidential candidate, talk about how unlikable she is (lowering her likability polls) till I’m nauseous… I have a recurring fantasy where I tell Trevor Noah off, ask him for his feminist card, tear it up, and walk away leaving the audience in mass confusion. NOT responsible reporting. John Oliver isn’t much better but he’s trying to back off, be the voice of reason, and his real failing is following “neutrality” journalism rules (which is why he doesn’t talk about Clinton that much). Stephen Colbert did a couple of really unfortunate sexist things that lowered him in my opinion but I will give them to you because he almost immediately tried to remedy it. Seth Meyers I haven’t seen enough of but I will also give him to you, because he seems OK as well.

          • Vienna Woods

Trevor and Larry may have been Bernie bros, but I just watched their two shows each for this week, and on both, they did not imply, but explicitly stated, that anyone that votes for Trump is batshit insane.

          • I Only Like Cats

You may have convinced me to start watching again. Thanks!

          • Vienna Woods

Why do they never dig it anything? Even Republican strategists are saying this isn’t a thing as they don’t do background checks on people attending rallies. Why can’t they discuss the actually interesting part of this:
All campaigns try to put as diverse as possible group of attendees behind the candidate for these things. Why is Clinton’s cross section an actual tapestry, and Trump’s is more one of those paint swatches you get when you’re trying to pick a shade of white.

  • Daisy

So, Trump implies that Hillary should be shot, or her judicial picks should be shot, but the real story is the dude who showed up at the rally who Clinton herself probably didn’t know was there?

    Fuck you, CNN.

  • Jennaratrix

And also too, dog forbid one of my kids does something shitty (hey, we raised them right, but you never know), does that mean I’m supposed to not vote anymore? I get that this guy is maybe not so nice in his own right, but since when is your kid being a murderous, terrible person grounds for stifling your political participation?

I know, not really the point. But it’s one of the things I was thinking about when this whole thing started.

    • cmd

Not to mention, given his choices, how likely is the Muslim guy going to be a Trump supporter?

      • Jennaratrix

True; although if he had shown up to a Trump rally, they would have either claimed to not know who he was or used him as proof that “Muslims, they love me, believe me. I have the best Muslim supporters.”

        I’m going with Option B.

    • I had the same thought. Like, is he supposed to never leave the house again or something?

      • Jennaratrix

        Evidently.

When I first saw the story, posted by the local TV station in my FB feed, I thought, crap, this is going to be handled stupidly. The local station happened to spot the guy while covering the rally, since he is from here and of course they covered him extensively. They were the ones who “broke” this “very newsworthy” story. They even ran into him at a rest area on the way back home and interviewed him.

    • gene108

CNN is not Fox News-lite. They are, in my opinion, to the right of Fox News. I’ve switched back and forth between the two and Fox News is the less biased channel.

They are trying to “out Fox” Fox News, with a bunch of rabid right-wingers on all the time.

    • Brazilian Fart Porn

/snark My local VA does not show the News channels in the waiting rooms. They are always on some Counting Cars type shows. I have to give them kudos, as it is in a suburban/rural cusp part of TX.

  • Lefty Frizzell

So this dude was at the event. It’s not even up for discussion as an “error” unless Hillary invited him, right? You can’t expect all staff at the doors to check photo IDs of everybody against their list of people who’s attendance would make for bad optics in the eyes of right wing media. Well, you can’t reasonably expect that, but maybe Fox….but I digress.

On the right, then, the insinuation is that Hillary invited him, to broadcast some sort of message, support for some policy position or point of view. What is that message?

Is it that Hillary hates America, and is glad all those gays got shot? Or that she supports his claim to be the rightful leader in exile of Afghanistan?

It’s just that neither of those seem very likely to me, and anybody who thinks they are is a fucking idiot.

    • AngryKatie

The Trump campaign apparently does do that.
A WaPo reporter was denied entry to a Pence event by the security team because they recognized him on sight.

But really, Hillary having that Mooslim there was really what’s wrong. The LSM is hiding the fact that she was urging him to go on a secret shooting spree and kill only old white straight men with no college education.

      Oh, I can top that.

My daughter-in-law is the star of her Cybersecurity PhD program. She was a magna cum laude graduate of her university, she’s written papers that has won her literal GROUPIES at cybersecurity conferences, she’s already been to DC to speak before Congress about cybersecurity issues (and scared the crap out of them)–we’re talking a fucking star in the making for the cybersecurity community.

She’s been working as an intern at an Air Force facility for the past three years. She was hired at the same time as a guy, from the same program. He was put to work right away, doing cybersecurity stuff.

My DIL? She was shuffled off to little more than a storage room. She didn’t even have a chair for several months. She had to sit on a fucking file cabinet all that time.

They finally got her a chair, but she still didn’t get a computer to work with–for a cybersecurity internship.

And all that the boys in that workplace have let her do is–you guessed it, general secretarial duties like filing, typing, answering phones, making coffee, and so forth. Not cybersecurity work.

She finally mentioned something about it to her mentor at her college. The mentor and the head of research at her university hit the fucking roof, went over to the Air Force, tore out a new asshole for them, and then the higher up AF command came in behind them and ripped out yet another one.

Now she’s finally doing cybersecurity work.

After three fucking years of her internship.

It’s 20fucking16, and she’s been dealing with sexist filth like that.

I told her to get a lawyer and sue the fucking pants off them. I don’t know if she’ll do it. She’s a little bit, “it’s done now, they rectified it.” Me, I’d want their fucking balls and a lifetime supply of hammers to smash them with.

    [Wrong article, so, OT!]

I do have one surprising defense of Don Trump. That is, whereas it is an article of faith among the faithless that Hillary Clinton will abolish the 2nd Amendment — how she will do this is never a concern, she just will, shut up — Don took great pains to emphasize “essentially” eliminate it. Now, I don’t think there’s much to take from it, because it’s Don, but I feel he should get a mote of dust’s worth of credit for momentarily dialing back the Trumperbole.

Speaking of credit, on yesterday’s Diane Rehm Show, they had a Trump surrogate from Heritage, I think, to discuss Reagan’s Gingrich’s Ryan’s Trump’s big economic plan. When the topic of Don’s stupid childcare deduction came up, and the other guests called the stupid plan “stupid”, the surrogate had little to say. But what he did say was, essentially(!), “Geez, Louise, here Trump goes offering up a childcare deduction and all you people can do is pick apart the details!”

    • greyXstar

No, he gets zero credit. It’s a weasel word. He knows she has never called for abolishing the second amendment, so he says “essentially” as a way out of taking responsibility for an outright lie. The exact quote was “Hillary wants to abolish the second amendment, essentially abolish”. He knew he screwed up so he threw it in. It also helps to equivocate ANY form of gun control with getting rid of the entire amendment.

    • Aquaria

Of course Rehm had a Heritage weenie on her program. She’s always bobbing on conservative cock. That’s her entire raison d’etre.

      • Relativicus

While I share some of the criticism, part of her broad appeal is that she brings on guests from across the spectrum. She doesn’t put the pins to the dissembling conservative sorts as much as I’d like, but I’m thinking maybe she doesn’t see that as her role. She does push back, sometimes, when something really grabs her, but mostly — still guessing — I think she’s of the “we report, you decide” school.

Do I believe that someone screwed up by putting that man on stage? Oh, completely.

Do I think the Clinton campaign needs to acknowledge that this happened? Fucking yes.

Here’s the critical difference, though. When a hate-spewing public figure whose words incite violence gets on the stage at a Clinton rally, it’s a mistake, not the candidate.

    • artem1s

      ??????????????????????????

The father said he had been invited to the event as a Clinton
supporter but had not received any special invitation from the campaign.
The rally was open to the public and the Clinton campaign told WPTV
that it did not know that Seddique Mateen was at the event until it had
          ended.

“The rally was a 3,000-person, open-door event for the public,” a
Clinton campaign official told the station. “This individual wasn’t
invited as a guest and the campaign was unaware of his attendance until
          after the event.”

          http://www.politico.com/story/2016/08/orlando-shooter-father-clinton-226819
He was ‘invited’ the same way I’m invited to campaign events, by mass email that goes out to anyone in a particular area who has signed up for event alerts. Lot’s of people were standing back there. Who are they? Should the campaign send the message that they only want brown/blahs attending if they are not ‘thugs’ or if they are not first generation immigrants (unless they have a dead kid to exploit)? Should she egg on the crowd or the media afterward so they turn on him and attack him either verbally or physically? The message was to the point and simple. It did not exploit him or down punch on him the way that Drumpf would have. This is how you keep the story from becoming a week of damage control.

          • Parchment Scroll

And that is all I wanted (and, indeed, expected) from the Clinton campaign: Acknowledge that this thing happened, and how it happened. That’s next.

      • Me not sure

BTW : Trump had Mark Foley sitting behind him yesterday. Cover yer ass Donnie.

  • Bitter Scribe

Trump retweets white supremacists and it’s just Donald being Donald.

Clinton’s rally is visited by the relative of a criminal and it’s A BIG FUCKING DEAL.

But oh yeah, the lamestream liberal media is totally in the tank for Clinton.

    • GodEatGod

The media is in the tank for a close race because close races mean better ratings. If Hillary is obviously trouncing him, people won’t need OMG MINUTE BY MINUTE UPDATEZ!!!

  • hendenburg2

Wait… is it actually Seddique Mateen? Did they actually confirm, say, via interview, that it was him? Admittedly I’m not the best with faces, but in a country of 300+ million, there has to be at least a few other people that look similar to him.

    • Aquaria

Apparently the original reporters did confirm it. Someone up thread has the links.

I like how Cher uses a toilet to mean Trump. And everyone seems to know what she means. Is a toilet the universally accepted Twitter equivalent for Trump or did she make that up herself?

    • SisterArtemis

Oh, is THAT what that is? Couldn’t figure it out – thanks!

      • ViveLaRes

I had to embiggen it because I’m an oldz (can’t see, don’t twit that much, etc.). It could be a bassinet, which also works.

        Too true

I am a first generation Russian immigrant, and I saw the episode where he went to one of the floor shows at one of the restaurants in Brighton Beach. These are basically what would happen if somebody went to Moscow and told them about what a Vegas show is like, and then having only that information they decided to recreate it with half the space and half the budget. He came out with eyes the size of dinner plates, it was hysterical.

In his book (I haven’t finished it) he talks about how he decided to become a chef. He says he was 14 when he started washing dishes at a diner. At one point a wedding party came in. Some time later the patrons noticed that the bride was missing, and the staff noticed that the chef was missing. Then the staff looked out back behind the dumpsters and saw an Italian sex comedy in the making. “That”, he says, “is how I knew I wanted to be a chef.”

  • Rachel Book Harlot

They spent much of today talking about this and the new email nonsense, desperately trying to illustrate how awful she and Trump both are and how she lost ground to Trump because of it.

    • Usedtobeyellerdawg

Can’t let the Trump train derail too fast. Ratings, you know.

  • Celtic_Gnome

Wait a minute. Shy wasn’t home? Where was he? I thought you guys had an internet business that you can run out of your home or Wonkebago or whatever.

What was Shy really doing? Fox News needs to know.

  • arundel

God I love Cher. Her tweets are entertaining, she watches a lot of TV and tweets from her empress-sized bed. Role model, that’s what I want to do when I’m her age.
