Amazing, all of them.
Amazing, all of them.

What’s happening on the floor of the House Of Representatives right now? Oh nothing, except for how a team of badass Democratic representatives, led by Congressman John Lewis, the Civil Rights badass hero, are staging a sit-in on the House floor, demanding action on gun violence:

More than two dozen Democrats were participating in the sit-in shortly before noon, with some lawmakers seated cross-legged on the floor. […]

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the veteran lawmaker who was brutally beaten by police in the civil rights march on Selma, Ala., began the sit-in with a speech on the floor where he was surrounded by dozens of his colleagues.

“We have turned deaf ears to the blood of the innocent and the deaths in our nation,” he said. “Mr, Speaker, where is the heart of this body. Where is our soul?

“How many more mothers, how many more fathers have to share tears of grief before we decide to do anything?”

You are probably going to want to watch Lewis’s entire speech, as it is incredible and a transcript does not do it justice, so here you go:

Lewis asked, “Do we have the courage, do we have raw courage, to make at least a down payment on ending gun violence in America? … Not next month, not next year, but NOW! TODAY!”

And then they sat:

The answer to Lewis’s question about courage was obviously “Fuck no we don’t,” because soon after, the House went into recess and all the cameras were turned off. Here is Rep. Chellie Pingree, tweeting in defiance of that:

pingree

In the picture on the left, you can see Congressman Steve Cohen of Memphis, who we are proud to note is our own personal congressman. (Well, not our PERSONAL congressman! He represents all the citizens of Tennessee’s 9th, #politicalfact)

Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut is there. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois is there. Reps. John Larson, Steny Hoyer, Karen Bass … all sitting in.

Democratic California Rep. Scott Peters shared video of the congresspeople speaking out and chanting, “No bill, no break!” on his Periscope account, and tweeted this picture and statement:

peters

Oh, and here is former Rep. Gabby Giffords, who sadly knows too much about gun violence, tweeting her support:

gabby

So many, raising their voices and planting their asses until something, GODDAMNED ANYTHING, gets done. Can you tell they are pissed, a little bit? You can keep up with their badass act of activism, defiance and love by following the hashtag #NoBillNoBreak.

The Senate had yet another chance to do something Monday night, eight days after the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando. The Senate failed, yet again. Maybe these fine Democratic reps might be able to get House Republicans to take real concrete action on HAHAHAHAHA can’t finish that sentence. House Republicans are ginormous flaccid weenuses, eternally and pathetically beholden to the NRA. They do not care when people die in hails of gunfire.

But goddamn, at least these Democrats are raising hell.

That’s what those bootstraps the conservatives are always talking about are for, for holding onto as you’re getting reamed a new one….

      • Iron Monkey

Bend over and grab yer bootstraps, Mr. GOP congressman. NRA is feeling horny.

    • JustPixelz

Unclear. Sometimes they bend over, sometimes they kneel down, sometimes they put on a gimp mask. When it comes to the NRA, the GOP is flexible.

Also too: I thought Master of the Universe Donald J. Trump was going to make a deal with them about the no-fly list.

Dick-lickers of RedState! What say you?

This isn’t some University protest where the staff and admin may cave to a bunch of neon haired foot stampers with a picket sign and a chip on their shoulder. This is the decision center of the most powerful nation on the planet. And here the Democrats are, embarrassing the nation by looking like a bunch of children with lower lips protruding over a cause that’s not going to happen.

The Democrats have effectively turned the House into a daycare. A daycare of impotent rage, and old people tantrums. I hope the Democrats that elected them are just as embarrassed as the rest of us are.

    • Pickwicknext

They wouldn’t need to do this if the GOP members would DO ANYTHING that isn’t being obstructionist assholes

    • NellCote71

The only thing I am embarrassed about is 33,000+ people dying in America from guns. I am embarrassed that we are competing with fucking Somalia to be the worst country in the world in violence. I am embarrassed that an average of eight children a DAY are killed by guns. Those are he things that embarrass me.

      • Good_Gawd_Yall

I’m embarrassed that the rest of the world is legitimately afraid of our being stupid enough to elect Trumplethinskin. And when they look at our Congress, they should be.

    • Msgr_Moment

      Dicklicker libel.

    • wurman

The House of Representatives is not now, and has not been for about 6 years, the center of anything . . . much less “decisions.” Boehner couldn’t get a vote on ice water. Ryan is a mealy-mouthed composer of phantasies about budgets and Obamacare and Der Trumpenfuehrer. The Republican Party members turned the House into a brothel for money grubbers, tea baggers, and ignorant clowns. A daycare center would be three steps up from the bought-and-paid-for lobby exchange.

Neon Haired Foot Stampers is the name of my new punk rock garage band.

Yeah… right… How dare those Democrats protest Congresses inaction on mass shootings… Like 49 people getting massacred is, like, a big deal… They’re so entitled.

  • Spotts1701

The House will not be in order. Not today.

  • Treg.Brown

So will Ryan call for fire hoses, attack dogs, or both?

Also too, fuck the GOP and their willful disregard of the gun control a clear majority of Americans are asking for.

to his credit, he did vote with the Dems yesterday. But yes, the online bro wankfest could have waited

      • JD Mulvey

But he wasn’t there to support Chris Murphy’s filibuster, which was what forced the leadership to bring the Democrats’ bills to a vote.

He was too busy hosting a conference call in which he told his supporters to keep fighting because Democrats are all crooks.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

Yup- the online Bro® wankfest- he had other priorities

          • JD Mulvey

  • Steven M. Harries

Actually, if every African-American representative in Congress entered the Chamber barehanded and ASKED for a gun, the damned GOP would vote for gun control in a nanosecond.

    • sadboy

The GOP was certainly in favor of gun control when Huey Newton and the Panthers were cruising around Oakland with a car full of rifles. Wonder what happened to change their minds…

  • Jonny On Maui

Anyone in office that does nothing about gun safety and lets the status quo continue is just as guilty of the next mass murder as the shooter. Any lobbiest that supports and pushes for the status quo on gun safety is guilty too.

Start calling your anti gun safety reps murderers out loud and often.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

Naturally my pussy-ass GOP representative isn’t on the list. Why did I even bother to check? I hate the extent to which this is a party issue. It should be a “human” issue.

      • Blank Ron

But we already know that the GOP cares nothing for groups they’re not members of.

    • Treg.Brown

My guy’s there! Voting apparently matters!!

my congressman, albio sires, is in the houze!

If old Jim Crow couldn’t break that man’s spirit, some 98-pound weakling from Wisconsin hasn’t got a prayer.

  • Zippy W Pinhead

They really need to address the problems with the no-fly list as part of this, or they’ll never pick off any moderate Republican support. Glad they’re showing some spine, but they need to be smart about this, too

    • theblackdog

You mean the one the Republicans suddenly care about a decade later because instead of denying flights to scary mooslims it might deny white people access to guns?

      • Astraea

I think some of the newer Repreresntatives just learned the term “due process.”

      • Zippy W Pinhead

Exactly- in fact, the dems have done a shitty job about caring about that hot mess of a list too. But right now, it’s the go-to excuse for the GOP to not do anything, so take away that excuse by fixing something that should have been fixed long ago anyways

    • JaaaaaCeeeee

The Democrats are doing a sit in for a discharge petition for Rep. Peter King’s racist bill, to reduce due process and expand the police and surveillance state, really counterproductive political theater.

Why not a discharge petition for the background check bill instead, if not AWB? This is awful legislation that, upon examination, actually undermines leadership’s claim, they are for reasonable gun control.

  • baconzgood

Congress worried about people dying for no reason? I guess I’m the only one who remembers the run up to Iraq War II: Travesty Boogieloo

  • CogitoErgoBibo

Sort of digging the juxtaposition of MSNBC showing Dennis Hastert being wheeled into prison while they cover the Dem House sit-in.

  • Beowoof14

Hey Paul Ryan did something, he turned off the C-Span cameras so he can suppress any information getting out to the public. Gotta love a guy who will demonstrate dochebaggery at the pro level.

    • I Only Like Cats

I was going to leave him a choice message but his voicemail box is full.

    • SuspectedDemocrat

I thought he called recess so Republicans can go get their guns.

I bet he ordered all the fax and mimeograph machines shut down as well. Cut the telegraph feed! No morse code leaves this chamber!

    • BadKitty904

Interesting to confirm the the typical Repug reaction to truth or action is to suppress it.

I heard that as a result of his *brilliant* move, c-span replayed John Lewis’ speech.

        • Panika MCD

    • Jukesgrrl

I certainly hope someone is going to help him up off the floor when the time comes. He ain’t as young as he used to be.

  • beatbort

Don’t kid yourself into thinking Paul Ryan is a “moderate” or someone with whom you think you might have “common ground”. He’s just a cowardly Republican apparatchik, no better or no worse than Hastert. Fuck them all forever and ever amen.

    • Look Closer

      I second that!

    • BadKitty904

Today, I am proud to be a member of the Democratic Party.

  • TheGrandWaz00

One of the congresscritters asked (maybe Maxine Waters), “When was the NRA elected to run this country?” Good question, I’d like to hear the answer.

    • Cindyinencinitas

Oh my gawd I love her so hard.

  • TJ Barke

I’m stuck manning the office alone today and the phone has only rung (rang?) once and it’s not even eleven yet! Kill me now!!!

    • JustDon’tSayDittos

Then you have time for moar snark! Get to work!

  • Donkey Option

I am so proud of my congresscritters! Rosa is mine! I have met her and hugged her a couple times! She is awesome! My parents’ is Jim Himes who is also there and they call him Jim and my dad and he go out to lunch sometimes! The whole CT delegation is there! And apparently our Senators are coming by too. I know social media gets a bad rap, but it’s an easy way to let your Congresscritter know you support them if they are there! Follow them on Facebook if you don’t already and let you know they have your support. Or yell at them if they are ignoring it.

  • I Only Like Cats

Paul Ryan won’t let a vote because he knows it’ll pass, and the NRA will stop giving him the sweet, sweet bloody money. Although those “he supports terrorism” ads just write themselves.

  • I Only Like Cats

The feed from outside: “Because to him, human lives don’t matter…. Green money is worth to him more than red blood…” Someone want to give her a mic to drop?

  • Donkey Option

The problem (as per John Oliver and he is right) is that for people who aren’t crazy ammosexuals, gun control is something they support but it isn’t a huge issue. But the people who oppose it are active and super vocal. If more people voiced loud support for gun control to their congresscritters, then there would be more movement. One reason I didn’t support Bernie Sanders because he doesn’t (or didn’t) support gun control, but I was told that I couldn’t care that much about it. We just need to start being vocal about caring about it.

    • Sardonicuss

Prior to this, they had become used to opposition being political suicide. Current polling suggest otherwise. They don’t think they will get the votes to pass…..but they will get enough to club the republicans up for election over the head with ads for sure.

      • Donkey Option

From your fingers to the voters’ ears.

    • Daisy

      ^THIS.

Seriously, my friends supporting Bernie outright told me that they didn’t care that he was to Hillary’s right on that issue. It’s one of my bigger issues, however.

    • JaaaaaCeeeee

The various Clinton campaign claims that Bernie Sanders doesn’t/didn’t support gun control aside, Democrats could be supporting and sitting in for a discharge petition for the background check bill. Instead leadership chose Rep. Peter King’s racist expansion of police and surveillance state that spits on due process.

Maybe this is bad faith political theater, exploiting Orlando to show that even the worst possible, ineffective, most Republican bill was just bad faith political theater exploiting Orlando?

      • Donkey Option

If I can decipher you, are you saying that they should be pushing universal background checks instead of “no fly, no buy?” If so, from what I’m hearing, they are pushing both. But aren’t being allowed to vote on either. They pushed both in the Senate. They are trying to make a difference. Calling this political theater is ignoring the fact that they are sincere in their desire to make a change. But they can’t get anywhere, so this is what they’re pushed to. Nothing else is working.

        • JaaaaaCeeeee

I’d like to think noflynobuy is sincere, but so far as I know House Democrats are pushing for a discharge petition for a very bad bill that’s not about gun control, but about expanding the police and surveillance state and reducing due process.

I must be tough to decipher, since I’m having trouble following it myself. I keep trying to find some 11 dimensional chess reason for Dems pushing more watch listing of citizens without due process (noflynobuy) instead of background checks.

  • theblackdog

I see Rep. Donna Edwards there. I hope her potential replacement, Anthony Brown, will be as much of a badass, but I’m not holding my breath.

  • Zippy W Pinhead

My Rep is not there because, duh -R. Though it should be noted that the reason McSally got elected was because my old rep Barber (Gabby’s old staff member) proved to be such a spineless wimp that the Dems sat on their hands when he was up for reelection. I can’t honestly say he’d be there today either

    • Astraea

Mine too. He last tweeted about naming a local post office after another Reprehensible so at least he’s hard at work.

    • starfanglednut

I hate Paul Ryan so much. And the fact that the republican nominee for freakin president makes him look like some sort of rational and compassionate elder statesman is so awful I can barely contemplate it.

      • chicken thief

Speaking of that asshole, in other *big news*, Ryan rolled out the GOP alternative to Obamacare…. 37 pages of talking points.

      • Iam Reading

Let me warm your heart a tiny bit. In college, he had this girlfriend he thought was all proper and stuff. I was a bartender at the time and a long time acquaintance of his roommate. For a few weeks I was casually hooking up with this girl after closing for some pretty raunchy after hours activities. Raunchy for 20 something in the 80s, that is. Turns out, my raunchy fun times partner was Paul Ryan’s supposedly virtuous girlfriend, a fact I learned from his roommate who happened to see her disappear into the fraternity house with me one fine morning @ 3:30 am. Paul was pissed, but too much a ponce to do anything about it. Didn’t think about that for 22 years until Romney picked him as his running mate. My old buddy, Ryans former roomate, sent me a joking message on LinkedIn letting me know that I would probably disappear if Romney won. Evidently Mr. Speaker holds a grudge.

TL, DR- I had glorious sexcapades with Paul Ryan’s girlfriend in college and he was super butthurt over it.

        • starfanglednut

          That is completely awesome. Thanks!

Why did they sit-in? Because they were pissed they couldn’t get more offshore drilling approved.
OT: I see you started using something from “Wibbtiz”. I’ve gone from 60-125 Ad-Agencies/Web-Beacons to OVER 1000. The site is almost impossible to use/scroll and disqus is BARELY useable. Like a constant DDOS attack. I want Wonkette to make Tubmans and grow but at what cost?

Yeah, slows it to a crawl. Pausing the wibbitz helps, but you have to wait a minute before you can.

Give up some love for the person doing the closed captioning on CSPAN. Live transcription under the best circumstances is very, very difficult. They are working with cell phone feed.

  • Damian L

Sitting in is great but purposefully going into the republican seats with hammers, bats and pitchforks would be better for america.

    • I Only Like Cats

Pretty sure that would break too many house rules.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

just say “with votes” like we do here

        • berkeleyfarm

          Literally true in this case

  • Amelia

My representative’s last tweet was to share ‘No Fly, No Buy’ Means No Freedom by Andrew Napolitano so I doubt we’ll be seeing John Duncan’s (R – TN 2) terrifyingly unphotogenic face today.

You keep kicking ass and raising hell, House Dems. I am voluntarily watching C-Span for YOU.

    • Amelia

Our Queen Eternal Badass Elizabeth Warren has officially tweeted from the House floor. As if she would be anywhere else. And on her birthday!

  • BosGrl
    • SisterArtemis

      speaking of disgraces…

    • DinkyBossetti

Right. I mean, the constitution never explicitly mentions my right to stay alive when I am seeing a movie or going out for a drink, so therefore it’s hardly a right at all.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

Au contraire, the constitution is very explicit, before any ammendments even, that every American has the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Life is first. Check mate, gunnuts.

        • DinkyBossetti

Waaaaaaait just a second! Do you mean to tell me there is more to the constitution than the bill of rights?!

        • Msgr_Moment

          Declaration of Independence, so non-binding.

    • Hairstrike Alpha

What an asshole…they sat in at Woolworth’s and people like you called that stripping rights then, too. Fuck face

    • Jay
    • going4baroque

a disgrace to Woolworth’s? What a brain that one has. The sit-in, brought to you by Woolworth’s

      • Msgr_Moment

The good name of Woolworth’s segregated lunch counter has been besmirched, I say!

  • CogitoErgoBibo

I wish there were a way to take up a collection to send pizza to the floor of the House of Representatives. And use #NoBillNoBreak if you’re tweeting support on the Twatter.

    • Msgr_Moment

Tell the pizza parlor that Paul Ryan is paying for it.

  • DinkyBossetti
    • SisterArtemis

I know – I hardly ever visit the Twitterverse, but checked the #NoBillNoBreak link and spotted it right away. Thanks mom!

    • Zippy W Pinhead

      fucking awesome

  • Vincent Ricola

This is really a thing of beauty. I’m so proud and happy with my party right now. Please let this work.

  • ibwilliamsi

I haven’t watched C-SPAN in at least a decade. Thanks, Paul Ryan, for turning off the cameras and making sure that we ALL know your party is a bunch of pussies on the NRA take, and you don’t even have the balls to let the people that YOU are supposed to represent see what happens in OUR house. GTFO!

  • Robin

Republicans… Do you WANT to lose comprehensively in november? Because this is how you do that.

    • Iam Reading

The spirit of ted Kennedy clearly possessed her

  • Vincent Ricola

GO DWS! I normally can’t stand you, but that was awesome!

  • SisterArtemis

Man oh man, Debbie WS just let loose on the floor, and it was a thing of beauty.
And NOW my own Representative, Peter DeFazio!

    • WomanInAMood

      Go DeFazio!

  • I Only Like Cats

I can’t believe Ryan is trying to stop us from seeing what the American people paid for… Oh wait, yes I can.

    • SisterArtemis

He won’t be able to turn the cameras back on (unless he takes control of the situation) without losing face. (hey, I didn’t use the word testosterone, but it would be irresponsible not to speculate…)

      • I Only Like Cats

At this point they’re periscoping it so he won’t be able to save face either way.

        • SisterArtemis

          Nice, huh?

  • SisterArtemis

Wow, they just panned the room with the live camera, and the gallery is filling up! This is quite cool!

      • Marceline

Same place he was during the Senate filibuster.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

so he hasn’t made it in? I’m not near a TeeVee

        • Panika MCD

takin’ a nap in the middle seat of a plane?

          • Marceline

            Maybe making another video manifesto.

          • Astraea

I thought manifestos were supposed to be inspiring.

          We want good laws
          So do your jobs
Or we’ll find someone who can

      • SisterArtemis

He’s on the floor – don’t know if he came to the podium, the video keeps cutting out on CSpan. But not for long periods of time, so maybe not (he can be a bit longwinded imho)

        • Astraea

I apologize to Bernie for the cynical les Mis joke, then.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

          the House floor?

        • Panika MCD

I don’t think the senators are going to be speaking at the podium. if they speak, it’ll likely be on the capitol steps.

  • Panika MCD

I’m starting to understand what it felt like when everyone had to watch the Wendy Davis filibuster on livestream.

  • SisterArtemis

Ooooo! another Oregonian, Susan Bonadici (sp? don’t care) of the 1st district. Glad my delagation is doing the right thing.

  • Marceline

I keep looking for my Rep. Marcia Fudge but I suspect she’s still here in town at the Cavs parade.

    • SisterArtemis

Well, can’t really blame her for that

      • berkeleyfarm

Nope. And I’m still a little salty that my rep Barbara Lee (and my former rep, Nancy Pelosi) weren’t in a Big Happy Parade with our team themselves, but they are honorably repping on the floor.

    • Jukesgrrl

It’s 6 p.m. in DC and Rep. Fudge just got finished speaking on the floor. If she was at the Cavs parade, she flew back to the Capitol.

      • berkeleyfarm

Good for her in any case.

  • Fitzgerald Chesterfield

I don’t want to diminish what they’re doing, but I gotta say, that’s a pretty nice carpet that I wouldn’t mind sitting or taking a nap on.

    • SisterArtemis

see, this is the advantage of a sit-in, vs a filibuster. Carpet to sit on, or HEY! chairs! you can take bathroom breaks, and maybe you can order pizza?

I do not say that to diminish their work here, though. I’m kind of liking it – they are saying their pieces, venting their frustration on behalf of tehir constituents and themselves, cheering each other and the effort on. There is a kind of commoradery here, especially in the face of having to come up with ad-hoc broadcasting methods.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

A sit in around the capitol building by not congress-critters in solidarity would be nice. Wonder if that can be a thing? I’m only a few hours from DC

        • Panika MCD

gallery is no longer open, doubt that the building is going to be open much longer. I am hoping they will be releasing whose office we should donate food to soon, though.

        • Jukesgrrl

The voice-over guy on C-SPAN just said that members of the public are now sitting in outside the Capitol.

      • Daisy

        Aww, thanks!

I genuinely find C-SPAN to be more interesting than most of my parents TV shows, anyway.

    • Vincent Ricola

Me too. Washington Journal is my jam. I like to yell out at random angry moments “I don’t know why CSPAN lets Democrats call in on the Republican line!!!” and it makes me feel better 100% of the time.

  • Daisy

A big than you to all the Reps filming this, may Paul Ryan’s very name be cursed, with votes.

  • Proud to see that my Congressperson, Eric Swalwell (CA-15) is participating and live-tweeting from the (literal) floor. I called his office to pledge my support.

  • Regret

    That is awesome!
    Your politicians rule!

  • Jukesgrrl

The Periscope picture that C-Span is now broadcasting from one of the sitters isn’t so hot but the sound is coming through just fine.

    • SisterArtemis

at least you can read the phone number now.

  • Blerg

    It’s about time!!

  • Daisy

Picture kinda sucks, but the sound is loud and clear. They’re yelling at Paul Ryan right now, which hits all my happy feels. :)

    • SisterArtemis

I know, that was quite awesome!

I hope Paul Ryan is watching, teeth grinding, brow furrowed. I hope it hits him in all the unhappy feels, so that he just might be moved to actually do something.

      • Daisy

        Oh I love it!

*On a side note, if things had gone differently, it might have been MY Rep that the House Dems had to yell at, rather than Paul Ryan.

        • berkeleyfarm

          Oh, him!

          • Daisy

Yep. Even by GOP standards, he’s a colossal idiot. I mean, he’s not Louie Gohmert stupid, but few are.

          • berkeleyfarm

I knew I was a bit of a California political junkie emerita when I didn’t know him before he got his leadership position (California would have had the matched set, LOL) but he did seem to rise in the ranks pretty rapidly. I *had* stopped paying attention to the revolving door in the state house by the time he was there. (Also, there’s the LOL BAKERSFIELD thing going on. Sorry.)

          • Daisy

Yeah, he really did rise fast (not much to choose from, really), and as a livelong resident of Bakersfield, my attitude consists of, “Is it time to leave yet?” , so I so don’t blame you for the LOL BAKERSFIELD. Rather, I encourage it.

Also, I’m getting tired of playing the “Are they laying down new asphalt, or is the refinery just extra smelly today?” game.

          • berkeleyfarm

Yes, he was in state house leadership too, but with the hyperaggressive term limits we have, no surprises that someone moved fast there. I have given up trying to follow it (post moving out of the Sacramento region) and only know my current Assembly and Senate member names because I did my ballot three weeks ago.

  • SisterArtemis

Apparently almost all the of the Senate Democrats have come to the House. Nice show of support and unity, Dems! I am pretty proud of this bunch of mostly old farts!

    • cmd

This means at least I have one Senator from Florida there. Guess Little Marco is too busy…..

      • phoenix00

he knows exactly what he’s doing!

    • Daisy

      And insurance, also too!

    • phoenix00

It really falls apart once you say “a car is a mode of transportation, made for moving people and goods. A gun is a weapon, made to kill and maim”

      • CogitoErgoBibo

That’s the way I put it. A car is harmless, actually helpful, when working as intended. A gun will cause death/injury when used as intended.

      • SeeTrain65

Not to the maniacs. Everything they say is a gem, and everything they don’t believe is always wrong.

        • phoenix00

True, but part of it is also long-held beliefs ie. “it’s worked like this for the past 120 years, so that’s what I’ll go with” + a nonzero amount of confirmation bias.

          • SeeTrain65

            True ‘nuf.

  • Daisy

    Yay, California!

  • Jay
  • Paperless Tiger

This is enlightening. The Democrats are not telling the Republicans how to vote, rather they are just telling them to vote. The Republicans don’t want to vote, because they oppose the opinion of a majority of voters. If they vote, it may cost them their seats in the coming election, so they do nothing.

America has messed around and allowed the minority party to assume the role of the majority party in Congress. This point must be made. Now we face the monumental task of restoring democracy.

    • Daisy

It really is telling that they have to have a sit-in to get Republicans to just vote on this.

  • going4baroque

to be fair, republicans do not care to work on Wednesday afternoons, that fucks up two weekends for them

    • SisterArtemis

      it’s summer, doods!

  • Jukesgrrl

I’ve tried to contact a couple of the reps but most of their offices don’t answer the phone after 5 p.m. DC time (I’m in AZ) and the ones I tried to E-mail don’t accept E-mail from non-constituents. Pelosi didn’t, even when she was speaker, which I find troublesome.

  • Zippy W Pinhead

unfortunately, unpopular as it will be to hear Alex Pareene has it right- these guys need to fight smarter, not just harder

    http://gawker.com/the-democrats-are-boldly-fighting-for-a-bad-stupid-bil-1782449026

    • I Only Like Cats

Have you looked at the bill? It’s called HR 5544, introduced by a Republican, and it institutes due process and appeals into the existing terror watchlist. Could the people you’re linking at least freaking research before commenting?

      • Zippy W Pinhead

I went to both govtrack and congress.gov and saw no content in either place showing what you claim for HR5544 If you have another source that shows what you are saying in the body of the bill I’d love to see it

        • CogitoErgoBibo

Jump to about the 3 minute mark. Republican Representative Jolly outlines the bill’s content which does include no fly/no buy and due process for those on the No Fly List. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO_VDhyRUms

          • Zippy W Pinhead

if it actually shows up in the bill, great! but as of right not it’s not there. govtrack.us shows the bill being sent to the judiciary committe, it’ll be interesting to see what comes out, or if it comes out

          • CogitoErgoBibo

Hence the sit-in. All they want is the ability to get an up/down vote on the bill.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

except that bill has been sent to committee and doesn’t appear to be officially completed yet- Dems would do well to get this info out

          • CogitoErgoBibo

That’s sort of my point, although I made it poorly. In asking for a vote, they are asking that the bill be pushed through and out of of committee so that there can be a vote. There is text of the bill available to the committee. They just want it pushed to the floor. Yeah. I totally didn’t make that point very well before. Apologies.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

gotcha, so the sit in is specifically about getting 5544 out of committee. I still can’t seem to find any bill regarding universal background checks. The only related bill is H.R. 5546: To preempt State laws preventing a major city from regulating firearm-related conduct in the city that occurs in or affects interstate or foreign …
            … commerce.

          • CogitoErgoBibo

Whether it’s only that bill is a little murky to me. I’ve seen the following listed as supported by the sit-in as well: HR 1076, HR 1217 and HR 224. I’ve just heard most about HR 5544. From the Twatters, so not sure it’s completely accurate: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CllYypUWgAA67xa.jpg:large

          • Zippy W Pinhead

HR 1076 is also from 2015 and is the house companion bill to Feinstein’s, 1217 is To protect Second Amendment rights, ensure that all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and provide a responsible and consistent background check process. (both sponsored by Peter King) HR 224 was to mandate an annual report from the Surgeon General re: gun violence

Schumer has S 2934 which would require universal checks, among other things- appears to be stalled in committee since May

          • CogitoErgoBibo

I really wish HR 244, or something like it, would pass. That seems the most ludicrous thing to fight of all. Ooooo! Information! Scary! Can’t have that!

          • Zippy W Pinhead

            It’s the most indefensible

interestingly, Jay Dickey the congressman who originally threatened to gut the CDC back in the 90’s if they didn’t stop research (effective chilling such research even now, despite the ban being overturned after Sandy Hook) is remorseful for his role in silencing the CDC

          • CogitoErgoBibo

Yup. You probably saw it, but John Oliver really went to town on that. I love that man. He understands US politics far better than most Americans.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

I’m a little behind on the DVR, but I did see the one where he covered that

          • I Only Like Cats

Thanks for explaining it better than I could

        • I Only Like Cats

my source is C-SPAN which I’ve had on all day. Introduced by Florida Republican David Jolly.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

I just watched the video- great news if it actually makes it in the bill. it’s not in any official summary right now though. So I can’t really blame the pundits for not being aware of it (or even doubting the version some pol says with a camera in his face vs what actually got recorded in session). I do hope it happens though, an overhaul is long overdue and I can’t criticize much of the opposition to no fly- no buy without such a provision

        • Panika MCD

I am also confused at not being able to read the text.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

read through the thread- it’ll make sense

          • Panika MCD

yes, but it reads like a shell bill because it doesn’t actually have what language will be added, just what the language is meant to do plus “and other purposes”.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

at present, that particular bill is- it’s been sent to committee to be fleshed out, apparently. That’s why I was wondering if there was a related House bill actually authored for universal background checks- otherwise there’s nothing to actually vote on yet

          • Panika MCD

it’s not even mentioned as a companion to one of the SRs…and, as you pointed out, it’s not out of committee either.

          • Panika MCD

do you have the bill numbers for the senate resolutions which were voted down on Mon?

          • Zippy W Pinhead

I feel like we deserve a treat for looking up all that stuff. even though the person who called you dumb probably wasn’t paying attention.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

I wasn’t dumb- far from it. But I was uninformed. I shouldn’t have to pester fellow Wonketeers for an important piece of information such as what David Jolly said on C-Span. Yet it was completely unavailable from either congressional records or more importantly our pathetic press. Those assholes continue to refer to this as No Fly-No Buy with zero context or additional information. That’s why you see comment thread arguments everywhere about the lack of fairness in using that list- because nobody apparently knows about Jolly’s statement, including Pareene.

But I will give myself a beer treat for the effort

          • Zippy W Pinhead
          • Panika MCD

I gave myself a beer. I’m just glad that when I was like, “what should we do tonight, Zippy?” you responded with, “look up bill numbers, PMCD?” and it was excellent.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

S.Amdt.4749 was the Cornyn amendment that failed

    • AlasAnAss

Pareene’s article has been updated to note that Dems are demanding a vote on expanded background checks.

I agree that the no-fly list is big fucking problem. But this is not just about no fly, no buy. This is about demanding accountability by Congress for action or failing to act. This is about insisting on political consequences for anyone who continues to align with the insane priorities of the NRA (looking at you, Tester).

So overall, yeah, I’m impressed and really fucking happy–tough, smart, passionate Dems. Keep punching, Dems, keep punching.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

saw his update. do we have an HR number for expanded background checks? I didn’t see one

      • Donkey Option

I think it’s also about having a good campaign point in the future. “These Republicans care so little about protecting us from terrorists that they won’t even prevent people on the no-fly list from buying a gun.” Which I don’t necessarily agree with, but should resonate with the Republicans supporters (the non-insane ammosexual ones.)

  • shoeflyin

John Lewis is a national treasure, but he is MY Congressman. I am always proud to vote for him, and now I have to figure out how to support this action. Thanks for reminding Congress to do their job, Mr. Lewis.

    • phoenix00

Maybe call him or send him a message, let him know you support him, and ask how you can help?

      • shoeflyin

        Yes, absolutely

    • cynmac

He was my congressman, when I lived in Fulton County. Now that I am in Dekalb County, it is Hank Johnson, who is one of the most effective representatives but one of the worst speaker (by poll). He was “on camera” on CBS News Online, the gray haired fella in from of Corey Booker, who is speaking.

  • SeeTrain65

Where is my representative? Probably dining with reps from Monsanto and ag lobbyists. My state’s junior senator is also out to dinner, but the senior senator from Ohio was ON THE FUCKING FLOOR.

    Good on ya, Sen. Brown.

    • Jukesgrrl

Ah, another reason for me to adore my Senate fantasy-boyfriend.

      • SisterArtemis

gonna try to duke it out with Connie?

  • I Only Like Cats

I’m kind of hoping that the terror watchlist will be updated to include white pseudo-Christians and KKK… is that too much to ask?

    • SisterArtemis

      I think not!

    • Zippy W Pinhead

      and the sovereign citizen nutters

    • WomanInAMood

The optimist in me says that of course those awful people ARE fucking terrorists. The realist keeps pointing out that they are white. It’s not too much to ask, it’s the only sane thing to ask, but I doubt that it would happen.

    • Vincent Ricola

      And Ted Nugent too, please.

      • phoenix00

        I nominate Scott Baio

    • Courser

I kind of suspect that’s the big holdup. The Rs big objection is people who may be (or should) be on the terror watch list not being able to buy guns. I suspect that there are a number of sovcits on that list and depriving them of the right to guns is ‘unconstitutional’ because they’re only ‘Patriots’. Of course shot through with all manner of paranoid conspiracy theories.

Because yes, the FBI may well have some of those nutjobs on the terror watch list, cuz it’s not just for browns alone. White people might be on it – horrors!

(IMHO just as they should be)

  • CripesAmighty

    John Lewis has TruckNutz.

    • WomanInAMood

John Lewis has all the upvotes, all of my heart, and (even though I don’t actually believe in God) another jewel in his eventual heavenly crown.

      • BosGrl

What a tribute to this REAL AMERICAN with this standing ovation he is getting right now. The respect of his peers.

        • CogitoErgoBibo

I love his “respect me not only because of who I am, but because I have the voice of God” voice.

          • AlasAnAss

Moral authority. What a rare and awesome thing to witness.

  • CJTX

Is that HOJB (or is OHJB?) in that photo that MSNBC ran?

  • Stein Olsen
  • Rachel Book Harlot

My Rep, Grace Meng, is there, as are my two Senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand (who I love). Yay!

    • AlasAnAss

Gillibrand is amazing. I especially admire her work on campus sexual assault issues.

      • Rachel Book Harlot

Yes! She’s amazing! New York is very lucky to have her.

        • AlasAnAss

          Now you’re just bragging . . . ;)

          • Rachel Book Harlot

Haha! Maybe we could share her? :)

          • AlasAnAss

I think we can come to term on this, Rachel B. H. Yes, yes I do.

      • WomanInAMood

Her work on getting the military code of justice fixed, so that soldiers who make a complaint about sexual assault are not investigated by their commanding officers, is also pretty damn awesome.

        • AlasAnAss

Yes! Thank you for the reminder.

  • Jukesgrrl

The C-SPAN voice over guy said that members of the public are gathering outside the Capitol building and are sitting on the ground. I wonder how long that will last. Who bosses security? Paul Ryan?

    • Vincent Ricola

Hopefully Paul Ryan. I heard he’s too busy hiding under a desk and crying into a bunch of crumpled up healthcare plan media talking points to release the dogs on his fellow Americans.

      • CogitoErgoBibo

“I had a plan! There were going to be interviews. Speeches. Stoopid Dems. They ruin everything. Turn out the lights and call recess. I’ll just pretend I have friends anymore.”

        • Vincent Ricola

          *happy sigh*

      • Zippy W Pinhead

He can go binge drinking with Boehner

        • Jukesgrrl

Boehner’s probably at home, Scotch in hand, looking at his neatly mowed grass and laughing his ass off.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

mumbling into his glass “thank God I got out when I did”

        • Panika MCD

I think Obama signed an executive order saying that Boehner must be in working order to binge drink with him on 1/20/17.

      • Rachel Book Harlot
        • BosGrl

          Wow what a shithead.

        • Vincent Ricola

          What a dick.

          • Vienna Woods

            Neither warm nor deep.

    • Panika MCD

I couldn’t find anything about the grounds outside the building other than that it functions “like a public park”.

      • Jukesgrrl

Nancy Pelosi just told the chamber that there are hundreds of people “gathered outside to support us.” The members are chanting, “Stay, stay.” I guess they aren’t planning to stop the protest.

        • berkeleyfarm

As long as the assembly is peaceable I don’t see a problem!

        • CogitoErgoBibo

If you have wifi and the Periscope app, there is live streaming outside the Capitol. Hard to tell how many people are there, but it’s pretty damned well-attended!

  • Stein Olsen
  • Donkey Option

I want to go for my evening walk but I don’t want to miss anything. Is there a way to stream C-Span onto my cell phone?

    • Donkey Option

Okay, there’s a C-Span radio app for Android. It’s a little delayed from what’s on the video, but it is working in case any of you want it!

      • WomanInAMood

        Yes!Yes!Yes!

      • CogitoErgoBibo

If you have Periscope, they are apparently streaming directly there. Look up #NoBillNoBreak over on the Periscope app, if I’m following what people on Twitter are posting.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

I’d be careful about streaming while on a walk though, unless you have a decent data plan

          • CogitoErgoBibo

Good point. Although I just found a Periscope stream from outside the Capitol building showing the civilian sit-in. This is pretty cool! Might have to turn off the stupid comment stream. Emphasis on stupid.

John Lewis just now: “You know, during the sixties, I got arrested a few times.”

Rousers of Rabble- my new dubstep cowpunk band name

      • Msgr_Moment

You know who else got arrested a few times in the sixties?

  • AlasAnAss

Where’s Elijah Cummings? Is he outside the building kicking over cars to make more room for people who want to sit down? I bet that’s it.

    • AlasAnAss

There he is! Kicking doors down inside the House now!

  • berkeleyfarm

    Go get em!

I would like to note for the record that someone has delivered barbeque so the Reps can get some sustenance.

  • WomanInAMood

Just saw some tweets – Sen. Wyden ( D. Ore) sent over snackies to to the representatives. Rep. Blumenauer (D. Ore.) said thanks on behalf on him and Rep. Bonamici (D. Ore.). I know DeFazio (D. Ore) was there too. Feeling pretty damn good about things right now.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

Public Service Announcement: Please don’t send dildos or mayo

      • AlasAnAss

        At least not together.

        • CogitoErgoBibo

But canned clams are totally okay. Moar canned clams!

          • Msgr_Moment

Send empty clam cans to the Rethugs.

          • AlasAnAss

So, so many ways in which these comments, which aren’t here, could be tied together. Nope, not gonna do it. For once.

          • BloviateMe

            AlasAPass?

          • Zippy W Pinhead

            hold the mayo…

      • WomanInAMood

Dillon and mayo make the worst sammich. Or so I have heard.

        • AlasAnAss

Something, something, a foot-long roll something, something

        • Panika MCD

I make great mayo for sammiches.

    • Donkey Option

My senators sent over Newman’s Own snacks. I think that’s pretty nice, especially if they sent over those little sandwich cookies.

      • CogitoErgoBibo

And it’s a double-win since money on Newman’s Own goes to charity!

  • Rachel Book Harlot

Someone posted this on Twitter in response to A-Hole Paul Ryan’s tweet that the sit-in is a publicity stunt: https://twitter.com/jenerallyspeaks/status/745768762318561281

    • AlasAnAss

      Goddamn.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

    • WomanInAMood

I was at work. When I got home and checked in here (dammit I need a life), I watched this speech. I am proud to say that I cried. We are better than the worst of us.

      • AlasAnAss

You need more of a life than hanging out with us?

        • WomanInAMood

Apparently this is a life. But at least it’s a snarky, amusing one.

          • AlasAnAss

All right then. And recipes. And mommy bloggings. And dance parties. And shared fantasies about Kate Winslet . . . uh, hold on.

          • BosGrl

          • AlasAnAss

Like there’s such a thing as a substitute for my Katie.

          • WomanInAMood

I’m sure she is a charming young woman. But she’s not Colin Firth. And how can you abandon Parker in this way?

          • AlasAnAss

I never said Parker wasn’t also invited. I am an innocent, but I am a very welcoming innocent.

  • BloviateMe

    FUCK.

    YES.

    God damn it YES.

  • WomanInAMood

Apparently the Republicans are trying to figure out a way to take back control, while the Democrats are sending their aides to Target for sleeping bags.

    • Vincent Ricola

I’m in for the long haul. I’ll watch Rep.Scott Peters LIVE Periscope Video for as long as C-Span will let me. And I’ll chip in personally for a John Lewis air mattress.

  • Quercus

Yay. My Rep is there. I don’t know much about him having only moved recently. He’s Dutch Ruppersberger. My old rep was Steny Hoyer and he’s there too. Glad to know Maryland is doing its part.

    • tenya

Donna Edwards (mine) too! Maryland was so ready for this.

  • CogitoErgoBibo

Michael Moore just suggested that Obama get his suave self down to the floor and have a seat. That really would be epic, if improbable. Hey! I can dream, dammit!

    • WomanInAMood

You know, he has no fucks left to give. And he has done more than a DOZEN statements after mass shootings. Dream on!

      • CogitoErgoBibo

Imagine if he brought FLOTUS, the kids and sleeping bags. Gawd, I’d love to see that.

    fuck you Ryan, you pussy

    • Panika MCD

I know I really should go finish my report on a 30 minute hearing which was nonetheless important, but I am so glad I didn’t.

      • CogitoErgoBibo

This is history. You’ll want to see this. And maybe finish your report while you watch. Sorry. I’m a nerd. I turn in reports on time.

        • Panika MCD

I’m a total nerd because I get excited to watch the TX Interagency Data Transparency Commission in action. now that they’re out of session, do I go finish or do I wait to see if they try to have the Sergeant-at-Arms evict them?

          • CogitoErgoBibo

You finish the report and sort of keep an eye on the situation. Honestly, we’re all just wondering what happens next. Which is why this shit is worth watching.

          • Panika MCD

okay, I go finish this (some of the commission members don’t know how to press the little button that turns on their microphones) and you give me a recap when I come back.

          • Panika MCD

now I have the bigger problem of covering the Sunset Commission tomorrow morning and if I have to do anything with my brain before noon, it takes a good 2-3 hours to wake up. I dun wanna go 2 BEEEDDDDD!!!

          • CogitoErgoBibo

I’m awake too! And (okay, people should not know this) draft laws for a living. There are nerds who stand beside you! But we aren’t graded, so totally ignore us.

          • Panika MCD

if it was the stupid Tax Relief and Reform (aka “Dan Patrick’s WET DREAM”) or, like, Border Security (aka “Lucio LOVES Jesus”) or something equally inane, I’d totally agree. but when it comes to zero-based budgeting, people wake up.

          • Justno

          • Panika MCD

            BOURBON!

  • Vincent Ricola

    NO BILL NO BREAK MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!!!

  • Zippy W Pinhead

fucking cowards would rather vote to overturn the Labor Department’s new rule requiring financial advisers to act in the best interest of their clients.

Guess we know who these assholes really represent

  • Rachel Book Harlot

Paul Ryan instead of dealing with shit is trying to conduct business as usual. What a douche.

    • AlasAnAss

Not sure you’re being fair to douches here.

      • WomanInAMood

Douches can be very refreshing, or so I have heard. “Refreshing” is not a word I would ever associate with Ryan. Mostly because I am not stupid.

        • AlasAnAss

And douches can’t refuse to come on camera and do their jobs, like Ryan apparently has. So that’s another thing to like about douches compared to Ryan.

          • WomanInAMood

One tiny, tiny part of my brain feels a wee bit sorry for Ryan. He didn’t want the job, and pretty much got frog-marched into it. He hates it.

Of course the vast majority of my brain is delighted. Because he hates it. He helped build the scenery for this shitshow, now he can be a star!

          • AlasAnAss

I like the complexity of your ryanfreude.

          • WomanInAMood

“Ryanfreude” makes me unreasonably happy. Actually, now that I think about it, my happiness is entirely reasonable.

          • AlasAnAss

I am pleased at your pleasure. Revel away in it, if you please.

    • gene108

Why didn’t Ryan bring these up for votes earlier?

      Lazy MoFo

Edit: Dem sit-in forces Republicans to actually do their jobs and vote on bills!!!!!!

  • Pickwicknext

Are the dems still being awesome? I am on my way home and will eventually be able to watch stuff

Oh they are. They totally are.

Yay! I almost don’t care that my alarm is going off at 430am

Fuck him and the horse he rode in on with a rusty chainsaw of sitins!

        • Panika MCD

  • WomanInAMood

So according to CNN the Republicans are going to try to break this sit-in with a vote to fund fighting the Zika virus. Have I mentioned what ghastly people the Republicans in the house are?

    • ltmcdies

which I’m sure they will vote “NO” because …fuck those tiny brained kids and all

      • WomanInAMood

        Soooooo pro-life, amiright?

Zola-bearing mosquitoes only bite brown people, doncha know?

  • Zippy W Pinhead

Hey Ryan, the whole world’s watching

    • Pickwicknext

And laughing our collective asses off at you!

  • Panika MCD

fuck you for trying to get everyone out of the well by making them go back to vote with the electronic devices.

  • Panika MCD

guy asks if the Dems can be removed for occupying federal land. CSPAN says they can’t, but they are breaking rules by broadcasting from the floor while the house is not in session. THEN they rephrase, “the *media* is not allowed to broadcast from the floor while the house is not in session.” so are CSPAN and the Dems in the clear because the Dems are not media, technically, and CSPAN is just picking up their feed?

    • I Only Like Cats

They said at the beginning it was a grey area sort of thing.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

anyone not authorized could be deemed a protester and removed, including the congressmen. not sure if House rules have kept up with social media advances though

      • Panika MCD

my guess is they haven’t because then they have to get into the Tweeters and some of the olds just really don’t get that.

    • SisterArtemis

Ryan won’t want to make martyrs of the protesters if he can avoid it.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

that’s the practical answer. that coward is desperately hoping this all just goes away

        • NellCote71

This is the same person who called Trump a racist, but still supports him. He is not fit to be in the same room with John Lewis.

      • Panika MCD

he’s certainly willing to make martyrs out of 89 Americans every day.

        • NellCote71

          Exactly.

      • Jonny On Maui

It’s his choice whether or not to make them martyrs.

        They’re already heros…

    • WomanInAMood

Ryan desperately does not want to see John Lewis dragged away by the cops. People might make associations, and maybe even start thinking. Of course, we’re talking right-wingers, so the odds are small.

      • I Only Like Cats

Some people on Twitter are threatening party switches (because 90% for)

      • ltmcdies

yeh the visuals of Lewis being dragged out of the chamber….well the GOPers can kiss that minority outreach good bye for good.

along with anything resembling good will

Like they’ve given even the tiniest of fucks up to now. But yeah, you are absolutely right, the visuals would be devastating. It would basically be a complete demonstration of what the Republican party’s actual beliefs are.

  • CogitoErgoBibo

Hey! It’s recess guys! Feel free to have use of the playground or go at a game of kickball. Otherwise, the serious kids are occupying the floor. #NoBillNoBreak

    • RoyalUglyDude

Paul Ryan says the Dems broke the rules by using their phones, so they have to stay in during recess.

      • CogitoErgoBibo

Phooey. Recess should be fun-time! You know. Ban assault weapons time. Because we hate the kill-y thing.

        • RoyalUglyDude

They also pissed off Mr. Hand, er, Mr. Ryan, by ordering out for pizza.

          • Pickwicknext

            MmmmKay

          • lroom

            Bitchin’!

(gavel sounds) RECESS!! FREE TARGET PRACTICE & AMMO OVER AT THE Necrotic Repulsive Assassins’ BUILDING IN FAIRFAX!!

  • MilwaukeeKent

    Periscope!

    • Zippy W Pinhead

      the Dems are using submarines!

  • MilwaukeeKent

    Periscope down! No, up!

  • MilwaukeeKent

No, down! Crowd showing up outside. Soon people will be ordering pizzas for them.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

      Liz already brought donuts

      • I Only Like Cats

        Didn’t someone else bring barbecue?

        • Zippy W Pinhead

          yup and pizza I heard

  • Robin

I’m so proud of my party right now.

Today’s Gunz of the Day, brought to you by the Liam Neeson Taken 16 Tribute Band . . . http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36598735

    • RoyalUglyDude

Looks like a candidate for the no-fly list.

  • OrdinaryJoe

    Food fight !!!!!

  • just_jim

Elizabeth Warren is being awesome as usual.

Calling the Republicans out for voting to let financial advisors cheat people. And chastising them for their corrupt priorities.

    Go Pocahontas!

    • Pickwicknext

      Apparently she also brought donuts!

      • Msgr_Moment

        And ON HER BIRTHDAY!
        Happy 67th, Professor Senator!

  • Enfant Terrible

Reminds me of the sit-ins in Berkeley and Madison, this does. Protestin’ *old school*!

Very proud of our House Democrats right now.

  • Zippy W Pinhead

And this is why I’ve always said that Nancy has far bigger balls than Harry- THIS is how you make a scene and kick ass

  • OrdinaryJoe

All snark aside, watching John Lewis lead this sit in on the floor of the House, while the group sings We Shall Overcome, has brought an honest to god lump to my throat. This day will be your legacy Bull Ryan.

  • SisterArtemis

I wish there was a second feed from up in the gallery so we could see the floor as a whole. Or maybe there is and I just don’t know about it?

  • MilwaukeeKent

Seems some Republicans are turning into a Trump audience? Will there be a caning?

  • Quercus

    Who is yelling “Radical Islam?”

    • CogitoErgoBibo

Not me! I swear! I was saying, “Sematical jism.” It’s a term for gibberish.

    • Robin

It looked a lot like Louie gohmert.

    • MilwaukeeKent

Sounded like “Radishes is lame!” to me, but one ear has been kind of blown out since that nasty cold in January.

      • SisterArtemis

Radishes is NOT lame! Stoopid Repubs!

  • Recipriversexclusons

(orders Chinese food delivery) This is almost as good as watching the Korean Legislature…

  • OrdinaryJoe

Hey hey NRA, how many kids did you kill today?

    • berkeleyfarm

      This needs to go national.

  • Me not sure

The coward Ryan tried to call the house into order. There was a vote to side with shyster financial planners and override a presidential veto. It failed. Ryan then left the floor to calls of “SHAME!” with his tail between his legs. Ryan is the most pathetically overrated man in American politics. Fuck him.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

Tell us how you really feel!

      (also too, fuck lyin Ryan)

      • Me not sure

I would, but I’m speechless in the face of this heroic moment. John Lewis for veep.

    • Cismontane

Blood on their hands, enabling terrorists, and so cravenly corrupt that they openly vote to harm the interests of their constituents at the behest of their corporate overlords, right on national TV. Lovely, these House Republicans.

  • Master Contrail Program

And another beknighted, yet somehow, sensitive troll has wandered into the Superevangelisticexpyalatrocious thread. These guys suck though. Low-energy. Poor trolling. Cant fill out a Wingnut Bingo card. Sad!

  • Robin

I can’t believe they went to bat for a vote that LITERALLY stops financial advisors from suggesting worse investments when it benefits the advisor.

I swear the republicans are giving up on this election.

At least in the bush era they would throw up a “USA FREEDOM EAGLE TALON CHILDREN FIRST WOOOOO AMERICA 2016 bill” that required we all wear flag shirts and mullets when they wanted to distract from what was going on.

  • Adam Infanticide

While I’m happy they’re doing this, more than anything else it just seems like empty political theatrics designed to simulate a tangible difference between the parties.

    • Robin

It made the republicans look REALLY stupid. It was so worth it.

      • ltmcdies

well they certainly look flat footed and then that Gohmert guy did his “old man yells at clouds” bit for national television…

        good times

        • Robin

I think having periscope in every political discussion in Washington would fix 95% of our political problems immediately.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

at least let C-Span have control of their own damn cameras

    • Recipriversexclusons

If this gets apathetics and fencers to the poles in November to not only take control of the Senate (the House has been gerrymandered out) AND get down ballots by volume, so be it!

      • Adam Infanticide

They kinda fucked up that idea when they did everything they possibly could to alienate half their base over the last nine or so months.

    • WomanInAMood

At this point, I’ll live with that. Lewis knows a thing or two about getting things done. My money’s on him.

    • Apple Scruff

I hope that it results in lots of these GOP jackasses losing their seats in November.

      • Adam Infanticide

        I wouldn’t hold my breath.

  • Zippy W Pinhead

My thoughts and prayers go out to Paul Ryan and all the poor Republicans in their time of grief

    (Gee, this is fun!)

    • Robin

Louis Gohmert especially. Without his penis gun he won’t be able to use the urinal.

      • Me not sure

        Louis squats to pee.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

          and still soaks his leg

          • Me not sure

            Hoot!

    • CogitoErgoBibo

Thoughts and prayers for his attempts to appear to be the “sane” Republican. Yeah. That’s SO over.

      • AlasAnAss

That statement of his, about the need to respect the dignity of the House? What gall, what stupidity, what moral vacuousness. Is it dignified to even allow a vote on any possibly legislation to deal with gun-related violence? And that attitude is the same disgusting, willful blindness that sees disruption of the status quo as the problem, not the status quo itself.

In conclusion: That guy? Fuck’im right in either or both of his muttonheaded ears.

        • Master Contrail Program

Why those Democratic cads! There are post offices to be named! I think we’ve got an Obamacare repeal around here somewhere! This time for sure.

      • BoatOfVelociraptors
        • lroom

Will they also be polishing their monacles and twirling mustaches like the cartoon villians the Repubs have become?

          • cynmac

            Bridged fingers, twitching.

          • BoatOfVelociraptors

Fun fact, the Monocle is a bar that is right next to the Capitol.

    • Me not sure

      More popcorn!

    • Panika MCD

they’re really going to need your THOUGHTS N’ PRAYERS™ on Nov. 9.

      • cynmac

Fuck, they’ll need THOUGHTS & PRAYERS next month in Cleveland.

        • Donkey Option

My THOUGHTS & PRAYERS are with the poor people of Cleveland. As though living in Cleveland couldn’t get any worse.

          • WomanInAMood

Well, they did finally win something. And the concept of “The Full Cleveland” does seem to be slowly falling out of the popular culture. Silver linings, right?

  • Pickwicknext

Been checking out the twitters and the onion ninjas are all over my bus again

    • Zippy W Pinhead

      is that good or bad?

      • Pickwicknext

I look like a moron, but they’re tears of pride for once

        • MilwaukeeKent

Take it from a man who once cut the flash off a plastic yak, you don’t look like a moron. This reminds of Wisconsin in 2011, felt as proud then of the Dems response.
“Cutting the flash off a plastic yak” became a code-word for dropping acid among a group of friends back in my wayward youth. We dropped, then set off on a walk 5 miles across town to my illegal crash pad. About 3 miles in we stopped at a Walgreens as the acid began to hit. On impulse I picked up an R&B cassette that grabbed my eye, went to the check-out to pay for it, pulled some bills out of my pocket and sent a loud clatter of coins scattering on the floor.
The clerk looked me right in the weird eyes and dead-panned, “Well you didn’t have to drop it all.” She was so right, should’ve started with half a tab. I took my change, picked up the coins in a panic and fled. My friends caught up an hour later at the pad, where I sat with an X-acto knife in one hand and a tiny plastic yak in the other.

    • MilwaukeeKent

Is that the same as having the beer gnats all up in your grill?

  • CogitoErgoBibo

Representative Donna Edwards: “We’re done. We’re SO done.” I just love how refreshingly honest the quotes are getting this time of night.

  • Apple Scruff

One of my most favorite things is watching the Periscope footage on TV and seeing the little heart bubbles floating up the screen.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

See, that was what was making me want to back away from viewing the footage first-hand. The crazee, “U want 2 take mah gunz!” stuff was killing me. Ironically, of course.

  • Me not sure

People are now gathering outside the Capitol building and chanting. A movement may be in the budding.

    • Rachel Book Harlot
      • MilwaukeeKent

Wayne LaPierre must be drowning his sorrows with Reince Priebus and Paul Ryan tonight.

        • cynmac

Well, didn’t the Reps say that they were going to have drinks and cigars? I hope they choke on them.

  • Apple Scruff

So apparently, Tammy Duckworth smuggled her iPhone onto the floor inside her prosthetic leg. That’s some serious badassery.

    • WomanInAMood

She is seriously a representative of all that is good about this country.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

Saw that- don’t fuck with the duck

    • Recipriversexclusons

Is that why louie goobert kept talking about her cantaloupe sized, proselytized leg?

      • cynmac

ONHD! What is it with these guys and fucking with disabled people? Especially the military? That’s what happens in war, you asshats!

        • Recipriversexclusons

Tammy’s a war hero, the (not allowed) comment was a goober slam. Complete hearsay, even though everything on the innerwebs is gawd’s twuth.

    • Andrea Jacobsen

Seriously? That is so fracking badass!

  • Donkey Option

Someone just tweeted: I get that the gun debate is raw, complicated, and personal. But does equating it w the civil rights movement do a disservice to both?

My response in my head (because I don’t talk to people on Twitter): Young white lady? The people making the comparison participated in the civil rights movement. I think they can make the comparison if they want.

    • OrdinaryJoe

Damn straight this is a civil rights issue! An asshole with an assault rifle who shoots up a bar and kills me and my friends infringes MY civil rights!

    • WomanInAMood

Yeah, because John Lewis totally doesn’t understand civil rights problems. It’s all so new to him.

      • AlasAnAss

“Why didn’t he just *drive* over the bridge if he wanted to get to the other side?”

    • feministing

it is always fucking dumb white people making these kinds of comments i s2g it puts me in a rage. i can just picture them typing it out, leaning back with a smug smile and thinking “i am truly the most woke white savior of all, beat that fellow whiteys”

  • CogitoErgoBibo

Actual interaction I just had calling Congress after entering my zip code to reach my (asshat) Republican representative.
“Press or say 1 to reach you Representative.”
    [*Says “One”*]
“I’m sorry. Press or say 1 to reach your Representative.”
    [*Presses 1*]
“I’m sorry. Press or say 1 to reach your Representative.”
Yeah, I give up. Which I presume was the master plan to begin with.

    • Panika MCD

okay, I’m back. did they just clear the gallery?

      • SisterArtemis

it seems like they tried to, but since they didn’t keep calling [whoever?] on them to stop, I think it was halted.

All speculation, and I sure hope someone gets a second feed going, or at least video clips, I’d love to see what’s going on in the rest of the room.

        • Panika MCD

a friend of mine is in the crowd outside and posting videos as the congressmen come out to talk to them.

          • WomanInAMood

            Where can we find these?

          • AlasAnAss

And can we share them once we find them?

          • Panika MCD

you can share the one that I could share.

AND: she posted a great photo of all the donated food with #unrulymob. MEMORIES!

          • Panika MCD

unfortunately, Sondra keeps most things friends only, but she did free up the one from BAD ASS OF FOREVER John Lewis so I could share it to my page:

            https://www.facebook.com/panika.dillon

          • WomanInAMood

Alas! I don’t do the Facebook – no comment involved, I just don’t. But I really appreciate you sharing.

          • Panika MCD

I did that for a long time. you are welcome to view it on the page without signing your soul away.

          • WomanInAMood

Thank you! I’ll give it a try!

        • Amalga

Just watched on CSpan; John Garamendi (D-CA) speaking powerfully and asking for an R, any R, to come down and debate. Crickets.

          • SisterArtemis

            That was absolutely wonderful. Chickenshits!

      • CogitoErgoBibo

Not sure. I’m still watching footage from the floor on C-SPAN.

      • cynmac

Nope, they are still telling stories of gun violence. Ryan put them on recess so video i back on cellphone via Periscope.

        • Panika MCD

but I heard an uproar and ran in and they were saying that the people in the gallery were in their house and stuff…

          • Donkey Option

It sounds like they shut him up and the people are still in the gallery. They seem to be planning on going strong all night. Elizabeth Etsy from CT just tweeted a picture of her with a sleeping bag.

    • RoyalUglyDude

My Congresscritter’s voice mail box was full. I doubt she ever clears it out.

    • AlasAnAss

      Democracy inaction.

  • Donkey Option

So, who is the Republican who stays around just to yell at the Democrats? It’s like a real-life troll. No one wants him there and he won’t actually make a point, he just likes to yell.

  • Apple Scruff

A real Tweet I cannot believe exists. https://twitter.com/bllyrush/status/745822774036410368

    • Zippy W Pinhead

ummm, the anthrax attacks (Walnuts said it was Muslins!) the DC Sniper attack, the LAX shooting, UNC Chapel Hill, the Seattle Jewish Federation shooting- try again William

      • Donkey Option

And what counts as a Jihadi attack? I mean, the last attack was actually a homophobic closet case, San Bernadino was, but I can’t think of any other than San Bernadino. Everything else has been crazy person with a gun (or bomb like Boston.)

      • VforV, BernieBro Hillbot

Thirteen US embassies and consulates attacked between 2001-2009. C+ Augustus for the win.

  • Fartknocker

In my heart I hope that John Boehner is watching this, drinking a nice bourbon, and crying tears of laughter saying “Fuck you Paul.” I know Ryan is such a pussy fart he’s clueless as to what to do. The Sargent at Arms will tell him to go fuck him self with a barbed porcupine penis in the ass and leave a tube of Oregon bird sanctuary lube on his desk.

  • Pickwicknext

Watching the live feed on the Boston Globe site now…CSPAN wouldn’t let me on without a cable subscription

  • Charon_69

Should we just go ahead and engrave Rep Lewis’ name on the 2016 LBAOTY trophy and be done with it?

  • Andrea Jacobsen

Funny what happens when you give the people a voice…

  • Robin

Damnit did anyone else’s living room just get dusty? Seeing everyone up in the upper level was pretty damn awesome. I’d be at the capital building tomorrow if I was in driving distance.

  • Robin

And I love sander levin. I lived up where Dave Camp, and now hoolenar are from, so my reps sucked massive ass. So I cheered for all the Detroit reps like him and carl. Some of them are pretty rad.

  • OrdinaryJoe

    Occupy Congress

    • Robin

Oh god if they start doing twinkles I’m giving up and moving.

    • Recipriversexclusons

After watching the Occupy Wall Street, I thought “I hope they are all registered voters and exercise their privilege.”
I got my answer with the results of the mid-term elections.

      • Robin

It really seems like there’s gonna be good turnout this year though (thankfully). It’s gonna be guns vs. Gun control though. Democrats better not fuck this up.

        • Recipriversexclusons

Good turnout for that mid-term is what I was looking for. I prefer to not hatched my chickens before they’re count. As such, I will only use (thankfully) after the votes are counted, otherwise it’s (hopefully). Given that less than 35% of the electorate posted for midterm, I don’t think it is even a matter of “Dems” but “We The PEOPLE”.

          • Robin

I’m pretty confident today. I’m right there with you though. Nothing good comes easy.

  • Andrea Jacobsen

I think I just fell in love with Lynch.

  • sadboy

This is awesome. First time I’ve seen the House look like the British Parliament. Members shouting, hapless dingbat banging a a gavel, everyone milling about…

Now I’m hearing from the usual newsboys about the unprecedented lack of ‘decorum’ and droning on about procedural rules like a bunch of prissy snobs running the Greek Council at Faber College. I’m hoping the House Dems start coughing the word ‘blowjob’ when Ryan tries to speak again…

    • Robin

Ill pledge $100 to any rep that does that.

    • cynmac

Coughing the word “bullshit” would also work. Not Animal House specific but worthy.

  • SisterArtemis

Very happy to see them fighting back on Ryan’s “publicity stunt” label – yes, optics are involved, but so so much more.

  • Robin

I can’t wait to see last week tonight this week.

    • MilwaukeeKent

      But that’s next week.

      • Jonny On Maui

        I understood it perfectly.

I’m well into my second bongload…

        • Zippy W Pinhead

          second?

          slacker…

          • Jonny On Maui

            No excuse…

        • Robin

I had to re-read it. Haha, but I’m stoned too so it still could be us.

    • Andrea Jacobsen

I’m hoping John Oliver does a special online video tomorrow.

      • Robin

Or he lights up the Jon Stewart signal and we get the return of the champ!

        • Recipriversexclusons
        • ltmcdies

I saw Stewart talking about how he partly retired because he’s done all these elections and they are always “the same”..

I wonder what he thinks now

      • Robin

I kind of wonder if Hillary is going to unleash Jon on Trump the second they’re past the point of no return. Maybe make him the Vice President!

    • CogitoErgoBibo

There will be a British-brain explosion. As well it should.

    • Panika MCD

we’ve also got the last of the SCOTUS rulings up Friday and Monday.

      • Justno

        I’m anxiously waiting.

        • Panika MCD

you know about the gathering after the ruling at Scholtz’s, right?

  • Jonny On Maui

It’s situations like this that make me rethink my avoidance of all things twitter…

    • SisterArtemis

I have a twitter account primarily for these kinds of things – I never tweet anything, or I should say, never have before, but used it to send thanks to both my Senators (Merkley and Wyden) and my Rep, Peter DeFazio, all of whom were there today.

Early on, it was less cluttered and more interesting to me. Now #NoBillNoBreak, for instance, is pretty long and mostly supportive tweets.

      • WomanInAMood

I’m a recovering Luddite, so this is all a mite bit confusing, but let’s not forget Blumenauer and Bonamici. Ain’tcha proud to be an Oregonian today!

        • SisterArtemis

          I am indeed.

        • Tiria

Lordy, I remember Earl from his days on the PDX city council. And Wyden! I voted for him back when he was still in the House.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

I avoid The Faces Thing, but the Twatter is useful for “in-the-moment” information.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

Read a page or two of responses to any decent, thoughtful tweet. It’ll snap you back to reality in a heartbeat

    • You’re probably right to avoid it. I find it really hard to argue in 140 character increments. And there’s so much to argue with.

  • WomanInAMood

    We shall overcome,
    We shall overcome,
    We shall overcome some day….
I know deep in my heart,
    I do believe
That we shall overcome some day.

    Really says it all.

    • just_jim

Sorry to disagree. But the most subversive verse is this:

      We are not afraid
      We are not afraid
      We are not afraid
      We are not afraid TODAY

      • WomanInAMood

I know deep in my heart
        I do believe
        That we shall overcome
        Some day.

Thank you. We can win this one. For the children, and all of us.

  • Andrea Jacobsen

Just so you Americans know this Canadian is cheering so hard for your Democrats right now. And maybe crying a touch here and there.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

Manly tears are not tears. They’re just hope mixed with anticipation.

      • Andrea Jacobsen

Oh, I will claim these tears with pride because yes, there is hope here, finally.

        • Recipriversexclusons

Thanks for the thoughts AJ, but legislatively, I don’t see anything happening until the next Congress. We’ll know for (ahem) certain after the first Tuesday in November.

          • Andrea Jacobsen

Oh I know this is just the beginning, hopefully, but it is a beginning. A light at the end of the tunnel.

      • Jonny On Maui

While I would completely agree that tears are different mixes of emotions I have a hard time assigning gender to them…

But hey, that’s just my $0.02, no slam or harm intended…

    • Hillary Allen (aka Canuck)

Many of us Canadians are hoping that SOME kind of sense prevails down there… in the meantime, beware, there’s some gun federation in Quebec that is agitating for looser gun laws (on Huffington post Canada, also Google). But the response here has been like the Dems on steroids. Cheers!

      • Andrea Jacobsen

Yeah, same kind of poop going on in BC. Some MP thinks it’s a good idea to bring in assault rifles to the public. He’s very special.

  • Robin

Just saying, michigan may be a shitshow at times, but their reps are fucking killing it. Debbie is one of my favourites tonight.

  • Andrea Jacobsen

I think that might be a yes. Maybe.

  • CogitoErgoBibo

Is there a way to work this toward a Justin Trudaeu “Canadian hotness provides support” appearance? Because I’d be okay with that. Nothing at all to do with objectification. Nope. Not even. STOP LOOKING AT ME!!!

  • Jonny On Maui

There is a sound emanating from the fairway, a sound I first heard a year ago. It is the sound of teenage mynas yelling at their mom or dad to feed them. Course mom and dad are toughlovin’ it and not complying. It sounds like a score of dolphins on crack.

I imagine that’s the same sound heard in Republican Central right now…

    • Zippy W Pinhead

a score of dolphins on crack

This!!! This is what Canadians are always aghast at. If humans couldn’t be safe in North America without firearms then how the heck do you explain Canada? There was a meme about Panera being gun free so that was where all the shooters would go which blew my mind. Like, but that is my entire country… How does this make any sense?

    • WomanInAMood

It makes no fucking sense. None. It is flap doodle and hogwash. Believe it or not, most Americans think that too. I wish that every American who loses a family member to gun violence also goes for a civil suit against the NRA.

      • Jonny On Maui

        My family had vodka violence…

Oh I do believe it! From my fellow Wonkers to friends I’ve had since we were in our teens I know there are smart and balanced folks down there. I think perhaps that is what makes the idiots even more horrifying – I could lose a good friend in the blink of an eye because some gun fetishing moron said it was okay for a civilian with hate in his heart to own an assault rifle.

Even better, those aren’t the House cameras — those were turned off most of the time by order of the GOP, C-Span is committing an act of journalism before our eyes by streaming from the smart phones of Dems on the floor.

        • SisterArtemis

when I was watching, it was CSpan’s feed from the official House cameras, as they were in session for a little while. Our fervent speak-in participants shoved those photo boards right up into the frame of the cameras – it was great! Then there was no feed for a stretch, now back to the social media feed (not sure if its the fb one or the other thing I can’t remember the name of at the moment).

  • Recipriversexclusons

John Lewis understands that you might have to lose a few battles in order to win the war…
I hope “The People” can learn from his perseverance. Because the GOP has control of the House, he and the others know this battle is a lost cause until “We The People” change it (WITH VOTES).

Procedural stuff can be like watching water based porch paint dry on your deck during a month long rain. As such, that’s why we elect folks to legislate in our stead.

Another thing he and some good folk around him understand is the adage, “All politics is local”. Even though these folks are, unprecedentedly, portraying this from a national level, they are affecting you/us LOCALLY.
If you would like John and the other folk to “win the war”, do you think he would want US to change the local landscape right down to your local sheriff?

  • Justno

Sheila Lee is awesome right now. Woohoo!!!

The Republican leadership doesn’t want a vote, because then all the reps are on record and it could be used against them in November if it doesn’t pass, and if they vote for it they’ll get primarried by their rabid nutso base next time out. Profile in cowardice right now by the republicans.

    • Biff52

I used to be in his district. He was also our former insurance commissioner, one of the good guys.

      • berkeleyfarm

        Homeboy!

I wasn’t part of his state house district although he is the congressman for my two of my former residences these days. (Really mixed district these days politically … from Teapublican to Bernieland.)

        • Biff52

He was in Mokelumne Hill, I was in Mammoth Lakes on the other side of the Sierra. I don’t know what his district is now, me being registered in NV these days.

          • berkeleyfarm

We keep changing them! He’s in CA-3 now. Big mix, from North Bay and a lot of the western Sacramento metro area (including the People’s Republic of Davis), and a good chunk of the valley n and w of Sacramento.

I seem to remember he lived in Walnut Grove (Sacramento County, south of town, on the river) and his wiki page says he still does. That’s sort of one of the corners of his district.

    • Recipriversexclusons

C-SPAN = Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network (Big Money). They had to work a deal to get the coverage and strictly adhere to the rules. Approximately.

  • Tiria

So glad all the WA D’s are there. And perhaps selfishly, I hope Reichert’s absence comes back to bite him in Nov. I’m still bitter about the way he treated Darcy Burner when they were fighting for Jennifer whatserface’s seat.

    • WomanInAMood

I am totally with you, my sibling! Except context would perhaps be helpful. In other word, huh?

      • Tiria

Dave Reichert, WA-8. When Jennifer Dunn left that seat open, he and Darcy Burner, a giant nerd backed by Netroots, ran for it. She lost by a gnat’s whisker, but in the process, there was a lot of ugly, sexist bullshit put out there about her by the Reichert camp. Darcy is one of the sweetest people ever, and a strong progressive, and the way he savaged her was just gross. I’ll never have a single good thing to say about him because of that.

This is getting rather weird.

    • Justno

Yeah, I saw that. It was pretty crappy.

    • Recipriversexclusons

SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). The Majority controls the House.

      • Justno

Sure. But when Pelosi adjourned and the Republicans tried to stage a sit in it was over off shore drilling.

Sometimes I want to slap (with votes!) the “both sides do it!” people and the “there’s no difference between the parties” people.

This is the difference. They’ll protest over drilling in the Gulf of Mexico post BP. We’re finally taking a stand on in control.

It’s a relatively tiny stand considering how uncontroversial this piece of legislation truly is but I’ll take it.

        • AlasAnAss

So . . . you’re saying there are differences between taking steps to stop an epidemic of death and violence, on the one hand, and efforts to recklessly exploit an environmentally sensitive and economically critical body of water? Is that it?

However, CSpan is cutting back to the Periscope/Facebook stuff, so we’re live from the floor again!

    • Justno

Heh. I liked how Dems were like “Bite me” over that.

Besides, it’s not enforceable and the optics of trying do so would be terrible.

Checked in on the Periscope stream this morning when my stupid alarm went off. They are still going strong! Lots of hoarse voices, but saw some great speaking at 5am!

  • This is what American democracy has gotten to. To be heard, the minority party has to stage a sit in on the floor of the House! Democracy is about compromise. COMPROMISE! Otherwise, you get revolution.

    • At the corner, turn left

I’m sorry, but that became an unword long ago and was excised from the Rightspeak dictionary.

  • Vote Third Party

The ACLU and multiple Muslim American advocacy groups oppose the legislation these fundraising opportunists are demanding.

    • AlasAnAss

I strongly doubt the ACLU has come out against universal background checks.

As for the no fly bill, yes, there are legitimate due process concerns about its operation so far. But Democrats are willing to look at ways to improve that; the House leadership, though, won’t even allow the legislation to be discussed/debated/amended on the floor.

      • Vote Third Party

The no fly list is very arguably unconstitutional. Tacking on another constitutionally protected right makes it even worse. If I was a Muslim American or of middle eastern descent I would be extremely disappointed right now.

          • Vote Third Party

            Cheers ; )

          • Panika MCD

gross. when I ask people, “If you were a punctuation mark, what would you be and why?” in my head I’m saying, “Don’t say ‘semicolon’! Don’t say ‘semicolon’!” it’s the most common answer and people always say that it’s because no one knows how to use it and the speaker often only knows one way it can be used.

now, the tilde, on the other hand, is a totally underappreciated and underused punctuation mark.

          • AlasAnAss

I will fight you on this. Yes, the semicolon is misused, often. It grieves my heart when I see its abuse. But don’t blame the semicolon; blame, instead, those who mishandle it so roughly.

I came to also love the tilde when I learned symbolic logic, so I’m with you on that.

          • Panika MCD

that’s THE THING: that attitude that it’s being used incorrectly most of the time, but it’s not. there are multiple ways to use a semicolon and most people who think they love it so much only know one. more often than not, it’s being used correctly, but there are more interesting ways to frame things syntactically or other punctuation marks which could serve the same purpose.

          • malsperanza

Yep, the Dems are all about blaming Muslims for everything. That’s because as all decent liberals* know, there’s no difference between the Dems and the GOP.

        • Panika MCD

there is no “right to fly”.

          • Vote Third Party

Free movement and travel is what the founders called a “natural right.”

          • Justno

And this doesn’t stop that. No mode of transit is guaranteed. I don’t get to trespass nor can I demand a jet pack for commuting. Just because I’m restricted from travel via space shuttle doesn’t mean my movement is restricted.

I don’t get to yell fire in a crowded theater. I don’t get to be loud at 3 am. Yet I still have free speech.

The no fly list isn’t my favorite thing either but you’re reaching.

          • Panika MCD

            no, it’s not.

          • Damian L

            that ain’t what Scalia said

        • Justno

Depends on the level of scrutiny applied if it got passed and then if is challenged.

It’s not hard to argue a legitimate state interest here.

      • Panika MCD

they don’t have a problem with no fly-no buy. they have a problem with racial profiling being used to put people on the no fly list.

        • AlasAnAss

And that’s a real problem–how the list has been composed and managed. But even if the due process matters could be dealt with acceptably, Republicans still wouldn’t allow the legislation on the floor. They would rather a problematic process continue in creating the no fly list *and* allow those on it to purchase weapons rather than try to solve either problem.

          • Panika MCD

I’m glad that Obama reorganized the list so I no longer get orange carded.

        • malsperanza

And of course, as the ACLU and everyone else knows, background checks, no fly lists, and other such measures are way less effective than BANNING THE SALE AND PRIVATE OWNERSHIP of assault weapons.

November…tight race in vulnerable GOP districts….and the Dem nominee points to his/her opponent and says…that guy….bought dog of the NRA. Wouldn’t even vote on the bipartisan bill to prevent the terrorists from getting a gun.

from where I sit….the senate needs to be flipped and every Dem leaning voter has to get themselves to their polling station in November.

    • malsperanza

The point wasn’t to get a bill passed. That’s not going to happen with this Congress. The point is to tie the GOP firmly and visibly to a refusal to act. And to make clear that not all of Congress is a bunch of do-nothings.

This is an election summer. John Lewis just gave Hillary and the Dems a massive talking point. Do Americans want reasonable gun laws? Then let’s get a Dem majority in the House.

Why do you think Ryan shut off the cameras? And why do you think that became the lead on the story?
