Oooh! There is a mystery afoot in the political blogosphere, and we are ON THE CASE. Like Nancy Drew or one of Candice DeLong’s wigs or Keith Morrison or something!

The Daily Beast published an article today by Christopher Ketcham titled “Anarchists for Donald Trump—Let the Empire Burn,” about progressives like himself who would rather Donald Trump get elected president and destroy the whole country rather than see Hillary Clinton win and not destroy the whole country. You know, because that is how the revolution will come and whatnot. Not because they are petty or because they are almost definitely a bunch of white dudes who are confident that a Trump presidency will hurt them a lot less than the rest of us!

This, in short, is his super cool plan:

The scenario ideally plays out with Sanders contesting the nomination all the way to the convention and then running as a third party candidate, say on the Green Party ticket, siphoning away the base that Clinton needs to win. This will hand the election to Donald Trump, and force the Democratic establishment to realize it’s doomed unless it pivots sharply to the left.

I have actually heard this argument before! I was told many times by my fellow college anarchists that if Kerry lost to Bush, it would actually be a good thing, because then the people would totally rise up and start a revolution! And then we’d do all the syndicalism and end the war and redistribute the wealth of the nation and things would be great, but they had to get really, really bad before they could get great, because otherwise people would get complacent and not even bother to smash the state. Personally, though I was no big Kerry fan and voted for Nader that year (I lived in NY, calm down people, it was going to Kerry anyway), I had my suspicions! For one, it seemed pretty unlikely that anyone was gonna get it together to do a revolution, and for another, I had my mainstream liberal non-radical concerns about being able to control what goes on in my uterus to think about.

George W. Bush did win the election, and the revolution, it did not come. Nope, just had to deal with four more years of Bush! I am more than 100% sure that this is exactly how things would play out if Trump were elected. I also don’t think that helping to elect a far-right Republican would “send a message” to “the establishment” that they need to put forward more leftist candidates. Only problem being that we’d lose the Supreme Court for decades! But hey, I guess that’s just me selfishly putting my liberal concerns about my uterus ahead of the needs of the revolution again.

Of course, Ketcham says that this is an increasingly popular idea that the Clinton campaign isn’t even accounting for, and that there are many “Trump arsonist-progressives” stealthily rooting for Trump in hopes of bringing about the revolution. Including “an editor of a major progressive website”!

An editor of a major progressive website tells me in an email that if I outed him/her as a Trump supporter, “We’d probably lose the last funders that we have!!!”
That editor continued: “Absolutely, Trump by a mile. To the extent that voting for president matters at all, it is merely to give a certain secret pleasure to the voter in the privacy of the booth. I’ll get mine by casting a transgressionary ballot for the vile Trump, the greatest repudiation of the 25-year-long horrorshow of Clintonism I can imagine.”

Gee, we cannot possibly even begin to fathom what website would have an editor who secretly wanted Trump to win? What site could it possibly be? It is not us, I checked with Rebecca! Since both she and Evan are bought and paid-for Hillary shills, anyway, it is very likely not them. I am not sure what my official title is here, but even though I am a Bernie Bro, I am very happy to vote for Clinton in the general because I am not a lunatic. I am quite sure the same is true for Dok! But if not us, then who?

As JK Trotter at Gawker points out, “‘Editor,’ ‘major,’ ‘progressive,’ and probably even ‘website’ are not the most strictly defined terms.” Hell, at half of the sites these days, nearly everyone’s title is “editor,” not just the EIC. So, even if the EIC of a certain major progressive blog had just recently stopped working there, it could still refer to someone else working over there.

Let us think! Are there any sites that seem to be publishing a heck of a lot of articles about how it would actually be better if Trump won, because revolution? Or maybe a lot of articles about how Trump is totally gonna win in November?

Oh golly, I just can’t be sure! This sure is a humdinger! All I can say is that I remain hopeful that a good chunk of these “Trump arson-progressives” will come around by November, and realize that it’s actually not very progressive for a white male to try to force women and people of color to deal with the serious risks of a Trump presidency just so they can play at being Alexander Berkman or August Spies or whomever.

Asswipes like Ketcham need to be subject to a military draft, so they can be cannon fodder in Teh Donald’s war on Mezzikans, Mooslims, Joos, and whoever else pisses him off the afternoon of January 20th 2017.

      Fucking Belgians.

      • Nounverb911

Isn’t that how baby Belgians are made?

          Belgians…

    • Jay Vaughn

Hell shove a uterus up them and cover them in shoe polish too.

  • Oblios_Cap

We had to burn the village to save it, indeed.

    • Villago Delenda Est

I am not interested in saving the Village. I’m interested in destroying it.

      • MushroomsforKittens

NYU already took care of that for you.

        • Oblios_Cap

Don’t forget to salt the earth when you’re done.

      • Gayer Than Thou

The village had to be destroyed, or something like that.

    • Nounverb911

Trump will destroy the village so he can rebuild it again yoooooger.

      • Why am I Mr. Pink?

And then he’ll stiff the contractors on their invoice.

  • The Wanderer

Based on the spinelessness of the GOP caucuses in the Congress and the Establishment backing them, I don’t see a theoretical President Trump having any difficulty in destroying the country. The problem for Ketcham, et. al., is that the destruction will be indiscriminate, and they’ll end up with the same short and shitty end of the stick that the rest of us will have to cope with.

    Today we are all……….

    No we’re not.

    Nick Denton?

  • UncleTravelingMatt

Who would have guessed that the only lesson learned from 8 years of Bush was that he was just a little too smart and a bit too dignified to be an effective President?

  • The only good thing about the revolution would be that people like Ketcham are usually the first against the wall.

    • Jenny

Eh he seems like a snitch. He’d get by for maybe a year or two.

      • Oblios_Cap

        A real Robespierre, that one.

And right at the climax of the convention, the oppressed working classes will rise up and seize control of the state! Brilliant! Revolution!

Another extremist who doesn’t realize he is an extremist. He is just like Trump. He thinks everybody thinks like him. This is a centrist country. It moves slightly right or left on occasion. Moving far to the left would ensure a GOTP sweep of the White House, House and Senate for decades.

  • As we stepped out into the ash, inhaled the stench of burning flesh, and viewed the orange sky and the broken horizon of the city still burning in front of us, the cries of the dying carried to our ears on a hot wind filled with white ash, I looked at the handful of survivors with me and smiled.

That reminded me of a story about a post-apocalypse United States that had been devastated by nuclear war. Survivors are very isolated and always looking for news. Anyway, the protagonist meets an Air Force pilot and remarks to him that our country is destroyed.

The pilot responds, “Yeah, but you should see the other side.”

Scotland just did it, and it may or may not benefit them in the long term.

Progressive majorities in state legislatures and progressive governors. The scenario ideally plays out with Sanders contesting the nomination all the way to the convention and then running as a third party candidate, say on the Green Party ticket

Actually, from an article I read, Jill Stein is open to running as VP if Sanders agreed to run as Green and lead the ticket. I am not surprised, as suddenly, the Green party would become a viable third party. But, Bernie will remain with the Democrats as I suspect President Obama will help insure that significant portions of Bernie’s policies are included in the Democratic platform. Obama, and perhaps Hillary, recognize that they need everyone off the couch and into the voting booth in early November.

      • anwisok

I am not surprised, as suddenly, the Green party would become a viable third party something more than 5% of voters had even heard of.

A lot of these people go straight from “we have to have Trump so that he will usher in the revolution” to “but it doesn’t matter anyways because he can’t do too much hard.” PICK ONE! Either he should win because he will do so much bad that he’ll force revolution (which didn’t occur during W’s terms, so I too am skeptical) or he should win because he couldn’t do anything he says he will and so not be that bad and we don’t have that much to worry about. It can’t be both! And if you want it to get so bad that it forces revolution, you truly must have nothing to lose. Those of us who do would prefer to avoid this revolution of yours altogether.

Yep–too bad it never happens that way (they’re usually the first ones put up against the wall).

    • ClarkJoe

Sure Germany had to suffer through Nazism, a holocaust, a World War, and a giant wall dividing their country in half, but now they have Angela Merkel. I’m just assuming she’s some sort of progressive revolutionary.

    • Hairstrike Alpha

Yes Italy, Japan, Cambodia and Germany were all provided with progressive wonderlands once their systems crashed. Same with the DCR and Somalia and the list goes on and on….bunch of daft twats.

  • Serai 1

Oh Editrix, I was told the SAME bullshit by Anderson supporters back in 1980. What is it with idiots who actually WANT to see millions of their fellow citizens get their lives made just that much more fucking miserable?

    • Scopedog

Because they’re fucking sadists, that’s why. They also have a lot of balls claiming that they are the real “progressives”. Privileged assholes is more like it…

      • SuspectedDemocrat

Saying “It would have worked if you listened to me” is a lot easier than “You listened to me and now I have to make it work.”

      • AlasAnAss

Just one more version of American individualism curdled to narcissism, this strand disguised as concern for others. Makes it particularly insidious.

    • OneYieldRegular

Precisely! It makes them exactly like Republican Congresscritters.

  • Bitter Scribe

I used to think that it would be good if the Supreme Court overturned Roe because it would outrage women so much that they would sweep Republicans out of office. Pretty naive and callow, just like this take on Trump.

  • Sardonicuss

Bob Cesca occasionally writes for Salon. I wonder if he will comment on the possible insanity of one of his bosses?
Oh and he reads this site….Bob?…Buehler??

    • mailman27

If I can be a voice in the wilderness here– I read Salon somewhat regularly, and they are hugely anti-Trump. OK, they’ve got Paglia, more’s the pity. But it seems like they salt their articles with pro-Trumpia in a misguided attempt at both-siderism and providing some agitprop for the liberal readership to gnash about. They do have some great writers like Cesca, Digby et al. In general, they’re not THAT bad IMO… I don’t know enough to get all granular about previous editors and whatnot. I’ll shut up now.

      • idiotboy

Thank you, digby is a friend (my one and only claim to fame), I do not know how she cranks out so much work.
Also too you wonkette writers. Ok done sucking butt.

        • mailman27

digby gets after it like an auger.

      • Sardonicuss

I like them too ..obviously. I read Cesca on his own site, Digby as well. It’s not actually the horrific Trump fiction articles that made me stop reading them (I was long gone by then).
It’s the click bait hyper leftist stuff (libertarian…dare I say..Greenwaldian..) pieces that ran me off (..and the recent sacking of some really good writers).
Bob’s buddy Chez has done some great takedowns of their most egregious bullshit over the past few years. Maybe he will speak to this latest abomination as well.

        • SDGeoff

I left when Joan Walsh took off, and around the time they started their soft porn j/o articles for ironic millenial sex fiends.

        • mailman27

Yeah, that’s true. I guess it’s hard to resist the bait; just hope the site doesn’t go totally down the gopher hole. Pull up!!!

      • SDGeoff

Forget it Jake, it’s Salon, and Joan Walsh left a long time ago. Move on, buddy.

        • mailman27

Bakunin had a lot of facial hair too, dude. But he sold completely out by the third album.

  • ShinyBlueThing

This is the same mindset that looks forward to an actual Zombie Apocalypse, just because they want to shoot those people that annoy them. It’s just wearing a different hat.

  • Bill Slider

i read about this over at Gawker, where the claim was made that an editor of a liberal progressive blog, and a man, supports Trump. My first thought was, OK, it’s a man, but which bathroom does he use?

    • Cindyinencinitas

      ALLEGEDLY.

  • Insurance companies should automatically raise their rates on people who think improvements are best procured by burning down your existing property.

    • ClarkJoe

Maybe this is like a Backdraft thing, where some insecure white guy sets a bunch of fires so that he can come in and rescue everyone and feel like a hero?

    • Gleem-McShinez

      Darryl Issa just unfriended you.

      • SDGeoff

That’s not smart. He will need all the friends he can get in November. This one’s gonna be a nasty fight.

  • Zippy W Pinhead

It’s the damn intern! I knew there was something fishy about him!

  • Scooby

Wouldn’t it just be easier to move to Europe?

    • Sardonicuss

I hear Somalia is good for anarchists this time of year…and libertarians as well?

      • orygoon

And such a tax haven for the weary wealthy.

      • Scopedog

        Nah, too many Black folks….

        • Sardonicuss

Nah..it’s cool. They make good private armies to guard your compound, and they start working at like age 9?

      • JoeChristmas

You could drown that government in a bathtub!

        • Blank Ron

          What, again?

      • Cindyinencinitas

I’ll go if I can have a pirate hat.

        • AlasAnAss

You can have your own damn ship. I mean, if you’re willing to shoot a bunch of pirates who have the ship now. And have guns. And a lot of people with you willing to help you shoot a whole bunch of pirates and then become pirates themselves. You’re gonna need sunscreen also.

          • Cindyinencinitas

Ok fine! I’ll go to Party City! But I may still choose to shoot myself out of there if things get sketchy. With votes.

        • SDGeoff

I have an extra arm-hook thingy. And I am nearby. I can meet you at The Fair.

          • Cindyinencinitas

            Fried pizza at sunset!

          • Cindyinencinitas

Wait a second! Let’s go see Ziggy at the races! We can meet there after work wearing our pirate gear and spill beer on each other!

          • SDGeoff

            Ooooo…let’s!

          • Cindyinencinitas

Okay. I’ll figure out when he’s playing. I’m assuming he’s playing because he does every year but I haven’t seen the lineup yet.

          • SDGeoff

I haven’t been in a couple of years.

          • Cindyinencinitas

Me neither. Last time I went some guy spilled an entire beer on my shoe.

          • SDGeoff

Oh gawd. I haven’t had anything like that happen. I get all wound up to have some fried chicken or barbecue and it always turns out to be horrible. So I usually leave hungry.

      • sillybill

I guess with a name like Sardonicuss yer being all sardonicky, but regardless of the lack of an actual state, there aint much anarchy there. Not much free association, very little mutual aid, no peaceful meetings to achieve consensus on the issues of the day, just a bunch of hateful assholes all trying to stab each other in the back to achieve power as doG’s rightful ruler on earth. any actual anarchists who dared to stick their necks out in Somalia would get said necks chopped.
sorry if I sound defensive, lot’s of crappy things get mislabeled as anarchy and I guess I get tired of it.

        • Sardonicuss

Oh. So you are a real anarchist who thinks the depiction of Somalia’s current state as anarchy is a mischaracterization?
          That’s pretty fuckin funny.

          • sillybill

            yes.
i don’t see the funny part.

          • Sardonicuss

            I don’t doubt that.

          • sillybill

i guess i could ask you to explain the joke, but i think you’re probably just being a smart ass. i apologize for bothering you and will try to remember not to do it again.

    • coozledad

Rosa Luxemburg died “fighting the last of the Hohenzollerns and the first of the Nazis”, but she understood the violent revolution had condemned all their practical aims to failure.

These guys don’t even understand the nature of the last true modern revolution, That French one, which was utterly corrupted and doomed from the start for want of money. If what you want is Bonaparte, Lenin, or Stalin, fine.

If you want democracy, stick with it.

      • Blank Ron

They don’t want democracy. What they truly want in their mean little hearts is to be the ones in charge.

        • coozledad

You know, i actually hadn’t thought about that. Seriously. It casts a different light on them entirely.

I wonder what they’d sell or steal or kill to get there. We’re always between the pincers of the contrarians and the Fascists, it seems.

  • bubbuhh

When Dubya took the pot in 2000 through a combo of the Nader syphon and Chad’s dangly bits, we did get a ridiculous, bloody and ex[pensive war of 9 years duration (but, we did get no WMDs or oil, nada, zip) and the Bush Depression which was largely fueled by his very stupid tax cuts and his failure to recognize the vital role government regulation plays in safeguarding the country and the world from rich blockheads with the morals of leeches.

But, it turns out that the hundreds of millions of people who suffered because of Bush/Cheney’s issues with the size of their dick (yeah, singular) didn’t want a revolution. They just wanted reasonably good government. In fact, they were willing to tolerate six years of a horrible, do-nothing Congress as long as they had a President who could check its worst impulses.

    How has that changed?

  • Fly

We have to destroy democracy, in order to save it.

    • GDleftyPart2

Well the light in the bathroom burned out so we burned the house down.
Are you know saying that’s the wrong way to go about it and I could have just replaced the bulb?

I have a friend who is a Bernie fan who I think might actually vote for Trump for these same stupid reasons. I asked him how he would feel if Clinton fans did the same thing if Bernie had won the nomination. He was all “But that would make no fucking sense AT ALL.”
    Yeah, exactly.

    • anwisok

And the lightbulb STILL didn’t go on, did it?

      • sw19womble

        Mommy always changes the lightbulbs.

  • Msmlg1979

Instead of ritualistically kissing their Bernie photos 300 times before bed tonight, they could stand in front of a mirror and say, “I am not the only person who matters” 300 times. Seriously. You are not the only person who matters.

    • AlasAnAss

That’s not what they do with the picture, but basically you’re right.

      • Sakonyachen

I bow to you! Well done!

    • feministing

this forever. it isn’t actually *your* vote.

    • Sakonyachen

They know they aren’t the only person who matters. They for some reason think that Bernie is the only person that matters though. I am confused by that since the only reason I voted for him was because he doesn’t think he is the only one who matters. Or at least he didn’t used to.

      • Msmlg1979

When you are willing to watch other people suffer so your team can win, that is believing you are the only person who matters. That’s believing your thoughts and opinions are more valid than other people’s safety, rights, and ability to live a quality life.

    • goonemeritus

      I might be.

      • Msmlg1979

        That’s quite an achievement!

A stage of development. Once they start to develop any sort of empathy they drop it. Of course arrested development is not uncommon (enough).

        • SDGeoff

          Agreed!

  • FauxAntocles

Morons. If Trump wins, the Dems will veer R-I-G-H-T so goddamned hard the fucking country will flip over.

  • Hairstrike Alpha

Anecdotally systemic crashes such as these idiots lust for can bring about a lot of developments but rarely are they progressive. FDR was one such example but he was the exception to say, do you know what two infamous mad far, far, right tyrants came to power riding the wave of a systemic crash? I’m guessing this Daily Beast guy is not exactly smart.

One more bit of evidence: Losing to Reagan in 1980 and ’84 did NOT make the Democratic Party say “I know, we should go further left!” it sent them on their rightward cantor so anyone dumb enough to think losing to a Republican so far right he makes Reagan look like a pinko socialist would make the Dems go left needs their head examined. The big change for Democrats after 1984 was to shift the message to be more business friendly to attract corporate sponsorship you dumb, ignorant lilly white Millennial snowflakes…

    • Marion in Savannah

There you go again… Confusing them with “facts” and such. It makes them cry.

      • sw19womble

After their parents worked so hard to protect them from “facts” and “reality” too!

        • Marion in Savannah

Well, isn’t that what homeschooling is all about?

          • SDGeoff

            Indoctrination.

      • Serai 1

I know. He keeps coming up with this Earth Logic!

    • Spotts1701

And even then they gloss over the fact that FDR had to make a lot of compromises (such as excluding non-whites in the South) with a divided Democratic party, and a hyper-conservative (for the era) Supreme Court to get his New Deal through. Wasn’t until 1937 that he was able to get some of the bigger pieces to pass constitutional muster.

      • Hairstrike Alpha

Exactly. His idea of court packing came about out of frustration with SCOTUS ruling some of his biggest plans unconstitutional. He also traded away Universal healthcare for Social security and abandoned civil rights to keep the South on board. FDR was a champion for leftist socialism as America knows it but if you weren’t white while things did get better they weren’t exactly amazing.

  • Biel_ze_Bubba

“Trump arsehole-progressives” is more like it.

Ummm, right. Just like the way losing to Obama twice made the Repugs think, damn, we have to start being more progressive…

  • Hairstrike Alpha

It’s probably H.A. Goodman but everyone knows that whiney little twat is going to pull his wanker for Trump. These guys needs to come up with a cute acronym like PUMA so it’s easy to identify, mock and then ostracize them for being cult-of-personality issue-negative bitter retards.

This. A thousand times this. I can’t tell you the number of arguments I’ve had with people who “can’t be bothered” to vote and then bitch about the government. And yes, I do wind up yelling.

Having been a left winger through the 80s I heard the same “revolutionary” sentiments from Left wingers then. Voting for Maggie (may Hell be her home) Thatcher was supposed to usher in the longed for Communist revolution.

It was a fairy tale then and it remains so.

  • DesertedPictures

Burning the place down might push the Democrats to persue a new course. After all, they where very good in turning out the white vote 50 years ago. They might go back to their roots. Then you can choose a progressive racist.

    • Mr. Lambert

What on earth are you trying to say?

      • DesertedPictures

Some Sanders supporters think that electing Sanders will lead to a new leftward swing for the democratic party. That’s one possible lesson. But how many times has the democratic party moved to the left when it lost in the last 50 years? Did that happen after Reagon? They could just as easily swing to the right and start appealing to white voters the old fashioned way.

        • Mr. Lambert

It’s not easy to abandon your principles just to get votes.

Well, it would be hard for me, but I’m no politician.

        • Hairstrike Alpha

Well the corporate Democrats started to become a thing after 1984- the post mortem was the Democrats were being hopelessly outraised so the only way to fix that was to adopt a business-friendly persona. So basically, every time the Democratic Party has realigned since 1945 it’s been a tick to the right economically…

          • DesertedPictures

            Indeed.

    OT but not really.
It is true that Drumph is dragging the country in a particular direction. Think of it, everybody knows the Repubs don’t differ from him on any issue. The problem is, as the walking spewing id of the GOP, he doesnt dog whistle to their specs. Now they are scrambling around, having to renounce his racist bile at every turn.
TLDR: It takes a village idiot to drag the wingnuts…to the left, not a revolution. By the time he loses, they will all be on record loudly repudiating racism, sexism, xenophobia..essentially the invisible planks of their own odious platform.

  • OneYieldRegular

The problem with revolutions is that they almost never turn out the way you expect them to. The American Revolution was an anomaly in that things worked out. France got rid of the king and got instead an Emperor and 20 years of war. The Russian and Chinese communist revolutions resulted in 10s of millions of deaths. Etc. Etc.

    • Roadstergal

The American Revolution worked out – for the white guys. With a LOT of help from the French.

    • Dolmance

It didn’t work out. The choice of George Washington, a shitty general if ever there was one, was made entirely on his wealth and property, and it enshrined oligarchy in the country’s DNA.

It would have been better if our Revolution featured a guillotine, like the Frenchies did. But lest you feel depressed, don’t forget, we could always have a do over.

    • sw19womble

The Spanish Civil War resulted in a fascist dictatorship and wiped out an entire generation of anarchist thinkers (and a bunch of pro-stalin communists, so at least there was a silver lining)

      • sillybill

and the same thing happened in Germany – the communist party refused to work with the socialists because they were’nt pure enough, treated the people who should have been allies as enemies and doomed both countries to facism. somehow i doubt we can get todays purist brogressives to read enough history to learn this.

    • Gleem-McShinez

The American Revolution did NOT work out!

      Bernie isn’t the nominee! DUH

    • Villago Delenda Est

  • Dolmance

Trump is disgusting, yes, but give the man his due. What he did to those 17 other candidates for President was beautiful to behold. He crushed their dreams, belittled them, cut them down to their true insect size and humiliated them forever. I doubt any of them will be able to come back from what he did to them.

You want to see something that really gets the endorphins going? • JohnC44

That’s literally the most dangerous, divisive, and irresponsible ticket anyone could have come up with! Do you even know about Cthulu’s support of Tier 2 bonding exceptions in the Harmonized Tariff Code? Do you understand the implications that would have on $137,918.33 in net import credit allowances? I’m utterly shocked at your naivity!

  • The problem I see with this notion, aside from the obvious that innocent people just trying to get on with their lives, would certainly suffer more under Trump/chaos than they likely will under Clinton (excepting the people we will drone, naturally – but Trump would probably be worse in that respect too) – is that generally speaking chaos and madness do *not* bring out the best in us, as a species.

Like, yes, you hear the stories of the occasional coming together and saving strangers from a burning building or the band still playing while the Titanic sinks, but mostly I see things like the refugee crisis in Europe, or riots, or, you know, Walking Dead kinda scenarios, but replace zombies with riot police and/or mob justice.

  • I’m a commie who rolls her eyes at Hillz and thinks Bernie was too right-wing and soft on Israel – but this “worse is better” argument is utter bullshit. If it were true, North Korea would be a hotbed of revolution. And Hitler would have lasted 2 days in office, like the German Communists said he would. Before they all went to the camps, of course.

People rise up when they feel secure enough to ask for more. 1968 was the tail-end of the biggest boom in history – all those hippies had jobs if they wanted them.

    • DoILookAmused2u ?

Oh yeah? But they didn’t want them, man.

      • The point I’m making is that there was no job insecurity back then. People could drop out and take acid all the time and still, you know, eat.

        • DoILookAmused2u ?

B.b.but I thought folks went to live on a Horse Farm in Millbrook with Timothy Leary because they were Expanding their minds and breaking loose from the bonds of The System?

          • This was good ol’ early 70s US GOVERNMENT CHEESE. It came in a big block helpfully labeled “CHEESE”.

Traditionally they rise up when things have sucked, start getting better, but aren’t doing it fast enough. Eight years ago the FNG stepdad had the observation skills to notice that California had vacant buildings just like Texas did, but somehow he hasn’t noticed that California’s doing much better but Texas still sucks. You’d think those states would be prime locations for “wtf, where’s *my* economic recovery?”

      • limberrat

        • Left Coast Tom

Maybe they’re trying to leave California but can’t because the freeways have become so clogged with all the jerbs.

      • Tiria

Washington has one of the highest minimum wages in the country, we’ve had Dem governors for as long as I can remember, and Seattle’s biggest fights are about transportation funding and asshole developers kicking people out of cheap apartment buildings to drop ugly condos on the land instead. We got all the rest of the shit sorted out ages go. We also recovered from the housing bust faster than anywhere else. So much so we actually have a supply and over-value problem right now (hence the developers, TBH.)
We’re not without our problems (don’t get me started on that caucus shit, nor on the infestation of mindless hipsters and all the white supremacists on the Idaho border.) We also face potential annihilation should the Cascadia subduction zone and/or Rainier decide to get frisky, but that’s not a political problem. Honestly, if the rest of the country was run the way we are, we’d be . . . Well, we’d be Canada, really. I almost feel detached from politics most of the time because every one of my state and local reps is an awesome human being whom I trust to do the right thing. It’s a pity more people aren’t paying attention to what we’re doing up here, because for the most part, we’re doing it right.

        • Valkyrie

Redmond denizen here. And we have all mail-in voting so the voter ID and other GOP shenanigans can’t get traction.

But have you driven on the new I 405 with the Lexus lanes (HOV or pay per use lanes while everyone else is backed up for miles). There’s still work to be done, comrade!

          • Tiria

Quite true. Traffic and related transportation shit is the biggest problem we have here. Don’t even get me started on the nightmare of the viaduct and every stupid thing they’ve tried to replace it. Just knock the thing down, pave what’s left, run light rail down the middle (and up Aurora) and badabing, we look like Portland.
That said, I actually kinda like the Good to Go thing. Leave it to us to avoid the hassle of in-person tolling. I probably shouldn’t say it, but I’m looking forward to them doing something similar on the South half of 405 (though only if it comes with re-doing the I-90/Coal Creek mess, which is one of the worst bottlenecks in the whole county.)
Honestly, the only thing that really gets in our way, culturally speaking, is our habit of processing everything to death, because we’re trying to reach ~consensus~ instead of actually getting shit done. I wish we had more people who would just come out and say, “Sorry, Taylor. You’re full of shit. Your idea is full of shit. Everything that you and your entire committee have ever proposed is full of shit. Go out and sit on the naughty step and think about what you’ve done while the adults actually ram this through over the top of your empty little head.”
Also, we should just set fire to Tim Eyman and be done with it. Or deport him to Northern Nevada, where he’d be much happier.

  • It’s easy to be a left wing socialist revolutionary willing to ‘Bern it to the ground!!!’ if daddy’s still paying your rent and for your bongo lessons.

Yeah. They gave a press conference, nobody joined them, and in a twist right out of Foucault’s Pendulum a bunch of bitter enders said they were members when they fought with their opposite numbers in comment sections. Of course, Hillary’s followers were actually not McCain supporters.

      • Beulah

        About that last part:

Clintons4McCain’s group membership intended to vote for McCain in November 2008

Those people were virtually indistinguishable from the BernieBros.

        • jmhm

You do know that the PUMA organization was incorporated by McCain and announced in the WSJ and failed utterly to garner Hillary’s supporters, right? Just, wanting to be clear.

            Cite please?

For better insight into the whole bitter-ender phenomenon try this article from WaPo:

According to the Post-ABC poll, 62 percent of women who backed Clinton say they will support Obama, compared with 25 percent who say they will support McCain.

So which of these “winners” will win the “Kevin DuJan Memorial Award?” This award goes to the asshole who decides that a scorched earth policy is the only option to supporting the candidate who actually wins, damn personal or professional consequences. 2008’s winner, naturally, was Kevin DuJan. This asshat helped spread the false narrative that Barack Obama was a gay, crack addict. Now you can find him abusing libraries about their computer policies with Megan Fox…a real upgrade there. Anybody bets on who that will be this year?

Is it paranoid that someone nay be sufficiently unhinged to try and “take care” of Clinton to clear the way?

    • Left Coast Tom

Well, I know right-wing morons have long accused her of murdering Vince Foster, but I’m not sure that would qualify as an “assassination”. And it’s quite clear that leftier-than-thou “sources” have been lifting lots of anti-Clinton material from those same right-wing sources.

  • Spotts1701

But…but…BoB’s on Facebook say there may be hundreds of thousands, if not millions of California ballots for him that haven’t been counted! It’s on FB, so it must be true!

    • thenearesthippie

Pssst. Don’t tell anyone, but those ballots are stashed in my garage.

    • Left Coast Tom

Well…ballots are still being counted in CA. Mail-in ballots were required to be postmarked by Tuesday but have until Friday to arrive at their county registrar of voters office.

Yesterday evening the Clinton/Sanders margin stood at 55.8%/43.2%, for a Clinton lead of 12.6%. Tonight the margin is 55.9%/43.2%, meaning Clinton’s lead has grown to 12.7%.

  • diogenez

For a group whose candidate has won the nomination, there sure are a lot
of Clinton supporters here who are going waaaaay out of their way to be
    complete dicks.

    • Hairstrike Alpha

Right because these assholes arguing that voting for Trump is a capital way to advance the Bernvolution aren’t worthy of mockery for being dumb, entitled snowflakes…

      • Spudger

This election is about feelings and personal validation, Hairstrike – not that whole practical governance stuff.

      • diogenez

So, bad behaviour excuses more bad behaviour? What – are we all 12 years old?

Let me ask you this: who is really saying that voting for Trump is a viable strategy for advancing Progressive objectives? How do you know that these people are who they say they are?

How do you know that a bunch of Trump trolls aren’t stirring the pot right now and laughing their asses off at the bunch of us?

        • Astraea

What bad behavior? We aren’t bullying anyone or filling up FB pages with our whining. We’re just sitting here snarking about some stupid people in the comments section which doesn’t exist because comments aren’t allowed here.

        • sw19womble

Those Trump trolls are destroying your movement, not Wonkette’s. Clean your house then, and protect your/Bernie’s legacy – we snarky tossers are the least of your problems.

        • Hairstrike Alpha

Trumpites aren’t that smart and they give themselves away with their racism. They’re really easy to spot to answer your “No True Scotsman” fallacy. Also, we’re not policy makers, we’re a vile snark mob. I’m happy to discuss policy with anyone but I come to Wonkette to laugh and mock wingnuts and increasingly Bernie or Bust snowflakes for their stupidity and numerous problems.

        • Left Coast Tom

It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if the “progressive site” did turn out to be Salon, and if the “editor” turned out to be Camille Paglia. She’s been “writing” for months about how hot and bothered Trump makes her.

    • sw19womble

For a group whose candidate has lost the nomination, Sanders sure is going waaaaay out of his way to continue to be a cockblocking dick.

      • diogenez

How so? Because he’s competing in the last primary?

      • anwisok

He has gone on record saying that, after the convention, he will do whatever he can to ensure that Trump is defeated. There ARE some very loud, annoying voices claiming that they voted Bernie but will switch to Trump. I think the number who will do so is small, but their vocal complaints hurt the Dems, regardless of hoe thy eventually do vote.

      • diogenez

Sanders and Obama appeared in good spirits as they walked together to
the Oval Office, smiling and talking. Afterward, Sanders told reporters
that he would stay in the contest through the final primary in
        Washington, D.C., next Tuesday.

But in another sign that the
primary battle was coming to an end, Sanders’ remarks focused not on
Clinton, but on presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. Sanders
said he spoke to Clinton Tuesday night, when she declared herself the
        nominee.

“I congratulated her on her very strong campaign,” he
said. “I look forward to meeting with her in the near future to see how
we can work together to defeat Donald Trump and create a government
which represents all of us and not just the 1 percent.”

Not that he did much about it, but he talked pretty words about it. Also, the environment. Anyway, not all “bad” votes are for bad reasons. And I’ve never voted for a Republican since. Rehab!

You know who I blame for this bullshit attitude? Any religion where the goddamn savior comes back and fixes everything. Really, this is nothing more than the underdeveloped wish for a miraculous way out instead of having to actually do fucking work to achieve a better society. Nah, that looks hard and people will call us commies — let’s just entertain our eschatological fantasies because I’m too goddamn slow-witted to think about strategy. France is by a wide margin the least egalitarian Western democracy. The class system exceeds the usual suspect, the UK. No one of humble birth e.g. Thatcher has reached high office in a century.
As for the US- without its revolution it today would be a Canada but 10 times larger. No civil war, slavery ended much sooner.
And not stuck with an antiquated political system- an obviously revamped British system circa 1790. In 1790 the monarch and the upper house (Lords) shared power with the House of Commons.
Today the first two are advisory only- all power rests with the Commons.
The US still has three power centers- one of them the Presidency being quasi- monarchical in that one individual is a branch of government.

Which one is better? That can be debated- but only in the US was it unconstitutional to have a beer for 14 years.

        • Duke

France is more egalitarian now than before its revolution.

Would the US have been a Canada or an Ireland? My crystal ball isn’t clear on the issue.

      • SayItWithWookies

Openly revolting is one thing — voting for the worst idiot you can imagine so that he fucks things up so badly that other people are inspired to revolt is another matter entirely. People who revolt against oppression do so because they’ve lost all peaceful means of redress; and if things don’t suck enough to get the revolution you want, and you’re willing to fuck up the lives of millions of your fellow citizens to make things worse in the hopes that things will become better than when they started, maybe you should rethink your strategy.

Because, see, if you make the world worse, then what it looked like before you fucked it up will look pretty damn good. You’ll have created misery and you’ll have made the old status quo that you hated seem nice. And the only thing the people who fought to get the old status quo back is that you were the reason things were so fucked up for so long.

Look at Enron in California. Look at fuckin’ Sam Brownback in Nebraska, or how much Snyder fucked up Flint, Michigan. When you make things worse, they don’t suddenly get better — in very much the same way that if you drown a puppy it doesn’t learn how to breathe underwater.

you are on a roll with these 2 posts. just perfectly stated and 100% the truth

        • Zippy W Pinhead

No doubt. If you’re all for the great revolution, at least have the fucking balls to get out there and make it happen. But don’t think you’re being anyone’s hero by voting to make their lives suck so much that their only desperate choice is to do that revolution you were too chickenshit to do yourself.

Ask Fidel & Raul. “La votación? no me hagas reir”.

Heh Gawker, not Salon, was the first website I thought about. Mostly because they’re already in deep shit with the lawsuit. Salon should just keep eating all the dicks until they choke.

    • Llareggub

I think Gawker just published that to throw off the scent. After seeing Scocca and Pareene admit they were unrepentant Nader voters, I knew that nihilistic stupidity would translate into Bernie or bust among the editors. That’s just me and my 4 beers tho.

      • Donkey Option

Quite a few of the Gawker authors have been really anti-Hillary and Bernie-or-Bust. I still read the sites since they have decent stories when they aren’t current politics, but they not only were on the Bernie side, but some of them would definitely like to see it all burn down.

        • anwisok

And yes things are not great, particularly for young people facing unmanageable debt. Bu Jesus Murphy we are not at such a crisis point that we should hope for fucking disaster to save us. We have better options. It’s just not as romantic to go out and try to actually do some good in the world as it is to smoke weed in your moms basement and type angry things at people about revolution.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

Why are they in such debt? Do they no longer work AND do the school thing anymore?

        • Pickwicknext

Their parents told them they were too special to have to do that

          • Jen_Baker_VA

I am in debt, but that is because I did a dumb and went to a real pricey school, where I worked 3 jobs, and 2 unpaid jobs as well AND full timed it, and still needed a few loans for food and board and crap. I had scholarships and grants too (lesson, do not pick pricey school. Lesson learned!)
But there was no way I was ever thinking someone else was going to pay for me. Idk, maybe that is just me?

          • Astraea

It doesn’t help the economy to have a whole generation mired in college loans.

          • cynmac

They are already seeing that since Millennials are not buying homes.

          • Amy!

When was this Jen? It’s changed a lot since I was in school (undergrad around 1980, grad school for ten years 85-95, which I’m still paying for, and I got out cheaply compared to current students).

          • Jen_Baker_VA

90 censored so yeah, was just reading above, that makes more sense. I knew my own Alma went up ridiculously, but I didn’t connect that even on the state level this was happening.

          • Jenny

My local community college has a full time year at 9k a year and 15k a year in living expenses. It’s crazy.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

            That is insane o.O
Though it makes me feel a bit better over being dumb and picking a pricey school.
I thought it would look all impressive on my resume. And it probably would…if I was in that field anymore. Sorta means squat in my current profession, or the one I am trying to sneak into.

          • Jenny

I think about my student loan debt and get stressed about it. I’m not done yet but I know it’s going to be substantial. I regret not taking that dance scholarship as a youngin, but then again. I worked my ass off for a year to afford a car to go, but my mom set it on fire. I didn’t have much choice then to take the go get a better job path.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

It’s managable and they will work with you. Might never pay it off ever, but they’re not horrible to deal with, usually.
            The loan peeps I mean.
I do suggest one never consolidate. I did that once when I was behind, and they tacked on all the potential interest of the original loan and then factored in their own interest so it was all…wtf?

          • Jenny

At some point I’ll make my 10 years of loans and then wipe it away. Public service has its perks!

          • Jen_Baker_VA

yay! That is good. Pretty sure I will make it to 65 before I get mine paid off.
I was really…really…dumb on that pick. Did I mention that?
Muttergrumble. Sad thing was, fully half was paid in scholarships and a grant, and another quarter by my various jobs. Need to borrow Bamz’ time machine and tell young me to go to State.

          • Biff52

A friend of mine is 63 and still paying off his debt from a JC! There’s no way out!

          • Jen_Baker_VA

I think they wipe it off when you reach like 67 or something XD

          • Amy!

That just sucks enormously. Sorry, we let Reagan and then a pair of Bushes in, plus the Contract on America in the nineties and the Teabaggers in 2010, and just … fucked things up.

          • Jenny

Ha, I’m an oldz now. I’ve just finally worked myself into a position to where I have to go if I ever want to do more than just push paper.

          • Biff52

My mother wouldn’t even sign off for me to get a license, and the age of majority was 21 then, so the idea of driving myself to school was a non-starter. When I was 19 the law changed, so I finally got my license. Right about the time the Selective Service wanted to meet me. I figured my life was over, so education took a back seat seat in the trunk.

          • Jenny

I didn’t know how to drive. Luckily there was a grocery store I could walk to and a gas station and I got a job at both. It was about that time my parents decided that they had their shit together for about a year, and that was long enough.

So I was stuck paying rent to keep a place to live and save for a car and the courses to take drivers ed. It took forever to get the car but I had a deadline and found a very beat toyota supra on auction. Whatever, it drove!

Parents made life miserable because they knew they were now dependent on me to pay the bills and I wanted to leave. I had the opportunity to do it on a scholarship for the first two years and I’d never be coming back.

So between using my siblings against me, stealing my money, and just being general assholes, the fact that I managed to get a car to leave within a year was a major accomplishment.

My best friend took me out to celebrate the weekend before I was supposed to leave. My mother took the car, had my step dad follow behind her. She parked it on the shoulder of Loop 12, doused the car in gasoline, and threw a match. Or a cigarette, I never really got how she did it. I would imagine her using a cigarette, she’s like that.

Regardless, my little cash car only had liability. So all gone. The boyfriend I had just broken up with because I was leaving, took me in because obviously I couldn’t go back home. I should have pressed charges on my mother but she knew I wouldn’t.

They were eventually evicted from the rental I had been paying for. I had a lot of guilt about that, as my brother was already mentally unstable, and my youngest sister had lived her entire life in shitty motels. I felt I had left them behind. I guess I did.

I ended up getting a new, better paying job at a bank and getting a stupidly expensive car payment but I was desperate. Being an adult was significantly less fun than dancing around a stage. :)

          • Biff52

Whoa, that’s awful! That’s the kind of shit that can take a lifetime to get over. Hope you’re well…

          • Jenny

Well besides anger, sarcasm, and the penchant to tell people to go fuck themselves, I manage :P

Plus the bank offered a ton of counseling options covered by insurance so I took it. I still have the shitty memories but I no longer have a death wish like I did for the first 5-6 years after getting out of there.

          • Biff52

Hang in there. I still dredge shit up now and then, and I’m 64 now!

          • Jenny

Indeed, just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. What do we do, we swim swim swim.

But I do get a little testy with Bernouts about the banking industry. Ultimately I left it because it really didn’t fit with me, banks are shady. But it gave me an opportunity to get on my feet quickly and get my act together. There were surprisingly few jobs that weren’t open to me there. You just had to have the aptitude, and finish their approved courses. It opened doors I wouldn’t have had in other jobs, and it helped get and keep me out of the ghetto.

          • Biff52

Banking can be honest work. It got my cousin out of poverty, too. She began as a teller, and worked her way up to BofA HQ in San Francisco, making good money and putting it all up her nose. She’s doing better now, too.

          • Spotts1701

I figure, as many say, I have a house payment every month without a house to show for it. And that’s after consolidating, but a few lean years during the late aughts force me to defer and do income-sensitive payments for a while which I’m now paying for on the back end.

        • Astraea

College costs are ridiculous even for students who work.

        • Amy!

You can’t pay for administration salaries on work-study money. Tuition increases have vastly outpaced the rate of increase of cost-of-living. And there are proportionally fewer sources for grants. Loans tend to have higher rates (until recently), and are non-dischargeable in bankruptcy. Basically, the kids are fucked, at a time when they really don’t have the experience to deal with nasty difficult financial decisions. It needs to be fixed.

First, reduce salaries of university administrators to no more than the highest-paid professor. Keep the secretaries and functionaries; fire the vice presidents for this and that (or pay them minimum wage).

          • Biff52

Not to mention that in many states, the highest paid public official is a football coach…

          • Amy!

That’s true, but to be fair, most of the silly salaries for the Super Coaches are paid from gates and from specific endowments gathered from athletic-supporting alumni. Some of the other costs of the academic minor league professional sports are paid by the universities, but for schools that aren’t building new stadiums every ten years, it’s mostly self-supporting. Hell, it should be. They don’t have to pay the players, after all.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

I do remember here in VA there was some kerfluffle over the tuition being increased like halfway through the year to pay for some sportsballing guy.

          • MsAnthropesMr

Actually – not that simple – and the University still ends up kicking in monies – And these are the top 120 – it’s stupid for most and I mean most colleges to have football teams.

            http://espn.go.com/ncaa/revenue

          • Amy!

Ah. Figures that my experience would be twenty years out of date. *sigh* So the students there to get the degree that makes them employable get to pay for the pro sports minor league team that their institution runs. Dammit, hard to blame kids stuck in that situation for wanting to burn it all down.

          • MsAnthropesMr

Yep. Although the kids and parents play a part in it too. There’s plenty of blame to go around. One of the big problems is the Amenities Horse Race – If you haven’t been on a campus recently, although middle management is a big drain – on most campuses you can get 15 types of rainforest coffee 24 hours a day and artisanal pastries. When I was in school (you tied an onion to your belt) the food and amenities were enough to keep you living, but little more. Now – if you don’t have beautiful dorms and gluten free artisanal bathrooms, you can’t get students. (Unless you are Harvard, Yale, MIT…etc)

          • Jen_Baker_VA

We had mice in our room. They were not pets. We named them anyway.
Pretty sure the walls were made of cinderblocks.

          • Amy!

I’m not talking middle management, so sorry if I gave that impression. The presidents of most schools are paid like CxOs of major corporations (their job, since about 1980, has been to raise money, and apparently there’s a strong argument that you have to flaunt it to raise it). Then there are the vice presidents (also typically charged with raising money for endowments) and after that, the deans. It’s fine if the deans are paid what senior faculty is. And the president is. And the vice president. If they’re paid more, it’s not fine, and it’s the major reason that the schools have to use adjuncts. The system has gotten fucked, and the fact that tuition can be raised, and the government will pay for it and saddle the students with (unrealistically high) debt loads is just … crippling the whole generation.

The amenities may be interesting, but I’d be willing to bet that they don’t cost nearly as much as the top level leeches.

          • Biff52

I don’t mean that it’s all bad, there are some students that are attracted to a school because of the sports teams, not necessarily because they play themselves, so the sportsball teams do bring in some money and diversity. A brilliant young lady, daughter of good friends of mine, went to UCLA in part because of the Bruins. Her parents were happy to keep her in-state, though 400 miles from home…

          • MsAnthropesMr

^^ This. It’s pretty easy to blame middle management – but in reality, there’s some bloated middle management, unprofitable draining sports teams, an amenities horse race, and really easy money for school. These combined, plus the concept that everyone should go to college results in the untenable debt and uncontrolled inflation.

          • Serai 1

Yeah, a lot could be done by getting rid of the fucking sports teams and making colleges about EDUCATION again.

        • Jenny

I wish I could but housing costs are expensive as is. There aren’t a whole lot of options for housing. Plus tuition at the University of Texas the flagship state school is over 11k a year. You’d have to make 30k a year to afford the housing and tuition expenses. Most kids right out of high school won’t get a job making that.

          • Jenny

And then the fees. The goddamned fees! And special books that change every semester, parking, food.

        • SayItWithWookies

Unfortunately, tuition has risen at 2-3 times the rate of inflation for decades. I’ve heard my contemporaries talk about their kids’ college expenses, and they’re insane. My dad would’ve sold me for glue before he’d’ve paid that much to send me to school.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

My folks couldn’t afford to send any of us XD So I am a bit skewed in my perspective I think. It never even ocured to me to ever have asked them to send me to school. I turned 18, they were done in their obligations to me.
Not that I do not have debt. Seems to me a state school ought to be managable, somehow. Think Amy had some good ideas down below.

          • SayItWithWookies

I went to a cheap state school that offered a great education, though I didn’t take as much advantage of it as I should. And even though it’s still cheap, in proportional dollars, tuition’s still a good deal higher. When state revenues are low, colleges get cut pretty quickly; and scammy for-profit colleges charge exorbitant rates, so that doesn’t help the numbers either.

      • anwisok

Perhaps less emphasis on the idea that you HAVE TO HAVE a college degree might be a good thing, also too? Fifteen years ago, I was informed, by someone in a position to know, that Ford would not hire ANYONE that didn’t have a four year degree. For ANY position. You need a 4 year degree to do final detailing on cars coming off the line – WTF? Supply and demand still works. If EVERYONE has to have something, the price goes up.

        • Jen_Baker_VA

I’d like to see better trade schools that are less scammy. Apprenticeships making a come back, that sort of thing.
There are plenty of people who would excell at a trade while they’d struggle through psych. Why is it a bad thing to work with one’s hands anyway?

          • Biff52

I finally went to trade school at the end of my working life. Got two diplomas I hang ironically in my garage. Haven’t made a dime with either of ’em, aside from the stipend I received while getting them.

          • starfanglednut

If I ever have an office, I am totally hanging up my graduation certificate from the psychiatric treatment program, and the other from the quit smoking group. I’m much prouder of those than my college degree.

          • Biff52

My last seven years of work, I had a shared office. I could have easily gotten away with it with only one other guy in there. He was nominally my boss, even though I made more money than him when I worked nights. Funny guy, until we went at it tooth and nail over politics…

          • Serai 1

There are good established trade schools around. I think the key is to look for one that’s been around a long time.

        • Jenny

This. It’s like this in government too. When I first started none of the bosses in that area had a degree, but they only hired people with degrees. I was hired on as a secretary because I didn’t have a degree. I was told I’d never be promoted to any other position without one.

I eventually moved to another area of government who based their hiring on skill testing. Oddly enough, the bosses who hired me via skill testing, each one has an advanced degree and a jillion different certifications.

          • Serai 1

I got my job with the Santa Cruz County welfare department because I SOUNDED like I had a degree. It wasn’t until the interview with my prospective boss was over that she asked, “Just out of curiosity, where did you get your degree?” I smiled and told her I didn’t have one. She was impressed. Next day I got the call telling me I had a job.

That was back in 1992, when employers were still marginally sane, of course.

          • Biff52

That would be my home if I could only afford it!

          • Serai 1

It’s expensive. I was paying over half my takehome pay just for rent. But there’s so much to do in SC that’s either free or very cheap, that I really didn’t feel the pain. It’s the place I really want to return to someday, should I have the bux not to end up homeless.

          • Biff52

Ah, you left too. I never lived there, but grew up in Pacifica, just up PCH a piece. We’d go down to Steamer Lane for a change of surf conditions. Funny, none of us were aware of the 50-ft monster waves just 15 minutes from home at Maverick’s. Probably because nobody had invented Jet Skis yet.

          • Serai 1

Yeah, I left. And I’ve regretted it for years. I could have stayed, but I got a stupid notion to come back to L.A. and try acting. *eyeroll* They didn’t want me, of course: not young, not skinny, not blonde. Also not gonna blow anybody, thanks.

I lived a couple of blocks from Pleasure Point for a while. Used to walk down to the beach every day to dig on the ocean and watch the surfers before leaving for work, and again in the evening to watch the sunset. It was so awesome. As was the yearly fireworks display over the water on Oct. 12th.

*sigh* I miss SC so much. *sigh*

          • Biff52

The crowds in SC are insane now, but still not as bad as LA. I’d probably live in Watsonville instead. More rural, a bit cheaper, but still not enough so that I could do it.

          • Serai 1

Crowds? You mean the population has gone up? Oh man, too bad. I guess they’re having to pack in the roommates just to afford a place to live. A few years ago someone told me there were CLOSETS and FLOOR SPACE being rented, the goddamn rents had gotten so high.

Watsonville is nice. I really liked Corralitos. A couple I was friends with rented a little back house on a small farm there. VERY nice little house, too. They didn’t stay because it was too far out of town for them. It would be ideal for me now, though.

          • Biff52

A lot of the traffic is due to tourism, but yeah-it sucks during rush hour. Still my spiritual home though, and I have a lot of friends there. I think I’d live in the Pajaro Valley area, tucked in behind all the strawberry farms.

          • Serai 1

I lived up in Felton and Mt. Hermon when I first got there. Moved from there down to Live Oak and then out to Capitola (about a block and a half from Gayle’s and OMG I gained about 10 pounds in the first two months) and later Aptos. Love the place. Pink Godzilla in Capitola? BEST SUSHI PLACE EVER.

Did you ever get up to Lompico? I took a bus through there one day because I was bored and wanted to see the whole bus route. HOLY SHIT. It was easy to see how a fucking serial killer could have been up there. That place feels EVIL. Full of these dark, lowering trees that just seem to stare at you with this HATE HATE HATE vibe. I was so glad when the bus came out of that hollow that I never went back up there again.

          • Biff52

I actually love it up that way. I’d go to the Brookdale Lodge for concerts whenever I could, and it’s just a hot minute away. I’m a bit of a hermit, so Lompico suits me.

        • Serai 1

A degree from a good trade school will guarantee you a well-paying job. A degree from a university? HAH. Ask your local barista.

          • pianoplayer1

      They, also, will never forget.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

Not to mention it took a combined effort of multiple countries to stop that guy…..you know. Not a revolution so much as a world war, and all.

      • pianoplayer1

20 million Russians. Can you imagine if we lost 20 million citizens?

        • Be Gin

          I know Donnie Drumpf can.

Are the Warren and Biden endorsements up anywhere? I missed the live feed. *pout*

  • Mahousu

Yeah, I remember how Nixon’s election brought about that progressive revolution, and Reagan’s election brought about that progressive revolution, and Bush Sr.’s election brought about that progressive revolution, and Bush Jr.’s election brought about that progressive revolution …. Really, we’ve had so many progressive revolutions at this point that it’s getting embarrassing.

    • CripesAmighty

Wait. Shouldn’t we be a full Leninist state by now?

      • Mahousu

Hell, the state should have withered away by now. Instead, all that’s happened to it is a bad case of mange.

        • revenant

  • Msgr_Moment

Oooh, ooh, ooh. Now I need a “Not the Lunatic” bumper sticker!

    Thanks, Chris Hayes.

God young people are stupid. Even the smart ones. I used to be one. Now I’m neither. But I did learn a few things along the way…

    • Serai 1

I know I was an idiot in a lot of ways when I was a young’un. Comes with the territory. Still, though… FUCKING HELL.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

I can say with all due humbleness, I was never /that/ dumb as a young.
Dumb in other things, but even young I knew revolutions= death disease, dismemberment and not a good time to be had by anyone.

        • Serai 1

Indeed. I was dumb in the “I don’t care if he left his wife, he’ll ALWAYS LOVE ME DAMMIT” sort of way. (Yes. Really. *facepalm*) Not so much with the racism and sexism and BLOW UP THE WORLD bullshit. Especially the last – after seeing the fucking DEBACLE that got Reagan elected (my first voting chance), I learned a LOT about dumbass “moral victories” and “making a statement”. (Yeah, make a statement that doesn’t involve ALL OUR LIVES, asshole!)

      • Astraea

I flirted with radical feminism in the sense that I thought the whole system was inherently misogynist and couldn’t be fixed. Still voted like an adult and never called for revolution.

        • feministing

wait what does radical feminism have to do with voting for trump?

    • Markuserektus

I casually talked to a couple of baristas at the local SBUX, they are Burn(ie) or nothing. Advising them that they could be the most hurt by a tRump presidency didn’t seem to faze them. One went on a rant that no one was worth voting for. He raised his fist and said “write in a candidate…write in Kanye West.” I figured at that point no one was listening.

  • feministing

when the HELL are we gonna bring back Texts From Hillary?? she was wise not to use it against super hip grandpa sanders, but against trump? come on! that tweet today was the perfect reintroduction. if she makes it a big enough thing all the tumblr children will forget the lies they bought and go back to thinking she’s cool again

    Another OT, folks:

Looks like there’s going to be a big budget biopic of Rumi, the 13th century Persian Sufi mystic and poet. This makes me happy, because I LOVE HIS WORK SO MUCH. I used to close my storytelling shows with my favorite poem of his, “Don’t go back to sleep”. This is great, right? But wait… who are they casting?

    wait for it…

    put the Coke down first…

Am I the only person on Earth that thinks Wil Wheaton is hot? (now, not then. I’m no pedo) Is it creepy that we not only have the same name, but spell it the same (strange) way?

          • Serai 1

NO YOU ARE NOT. I always thought Wil was a hottie. Sure, a very young hottie, really only ripe enough for other hotties his own age, but still terribly cute.

          • nmmagyar

He did nothing for me back then, but I have had many nasty thoughts about him since he started guesting on TBBT.

    • anwisok

I have to refresh to see the images, but . . . blond white guy?

ETA: The name was below the “more” window, too! Do I win something? An internet or two?

You win a ticket to NEVER SEE THIS FUCKING MOVIE!!!

    • feministing

no. come on. how do people even get away with this anymore? idiot busters think we are gonna get up off our asses to revolt against the giant murky orb that is the government when we can’t even get assholes in hollywood to stop pulling this shit even though everyone knows they are doing it and calling them out on it

      • Serai 1

It fucking kills me, because it’s not as if there ARE no appropriate actors who could do this role.

        • feministing

oh shit so that site really did shit the bed full stop. i’m both relieved to know it’s not just hillary, and saddened to know it’s not just hillary.

          • Serai 1

Oh, it sure did. Did you see the WHITE WOMEN SHOULD NEVER BELLY DANCE rant a while back? Good gods. They publish just anything now to get clicks. It’s a sad site, really.

          • feministing

no i haven’t visited that site in over 5 years thankfully. i can barely stomach the updates i get from here :x

          • Serai 1

That one was really fun, though. Some chick whining about how ART SHOULD BE PROPRIETARY TO THE COUNTRY THAT SPAWNED IT. Completely ignoring that no one country came up with “belly dance”, and actual DANCERS are very happy to teach it to anyone who wants to learn. A spoiled little brat who knew nothing about the subject. We had great fun tearing her apart in the comments. That rant set off a number of reply posts in blogs all over the place, too.

    • TJ Barke

      Here, this will help:

      • Jen_Baker_VA

I just realized now who you were. I am that slow.

        • TJ Barke

Yeah, I’m that one guy, who was a pony.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

tbh, you make a much cuter guy than a pony ^.^ Not that you were not an adorable anarchy pony as well.

          • TJ Barke

            *Blushes*
I don’t like my hair in the pics though. It’s shorter than usual and my slowly receding hairline is becoming apparent and it makes me feel old and sad.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

I didn’t notice the hair line, but even now you pointed it out, it doesn’t look like it is too much of a receed at all.
But I do understand about feeling old. The other day in Karate we did squats and I was all grrr, I am strong, I do SQUATS. And then today I limped all day.

          • TJ Barke

I just know that I’ll be wearing a lot of hats in the future.

      • Serai 1

Oh fuck me, I don’t know. I’ve never been able to stand him. The feeling was not helped when a friend of mine in my background extra days told me about working on Romeo + Juliet. She giggled about Leo whining about having to do Shakespeare in original text. “Why can’t we just talk normal?” LOLOL.

My sister invited me over to watch that the other day. I lasted about fifteen minutes, up until the first bear attack. Then I had to bail. I’m not into sadism, thanks, and Hollywood has wandered way too far into that territory for me. (When I FINALLY watched Black Hawk Down a few months ago, I managed to make it through about 3/4 of it, and then I shut it off, saying to myself, “That’s IT. No more war movies for me, EVER.” Shit, that thing is so fucking sadistic, I can’t even.)

  • OrdinaryJoe

All kinds of white guys have been fucking around with that kind of bull shit plotting since the 1968 election. Today they are mostly running their modems blogging from the lunatic far right.

    • Llareggub

  • alwayspunkindrublic

Wonder what all the people who got killed in Iraq would say to those who voted for Nader? Oh wait, they can’t. They’re dead.

    • OrdinaryJoe

Exactly. In the same vein, during the 60’s the white radical men with the megaphones were all too happy to scream about the people rising up in a revolution but it was the brothers and sisters in the Black Panthers that were the boots on the ground that did most of the bleeding. The “arson progressives” are substantially cut from the same cloth, eager to see blood in the streets but you can be damn sure it’s not going to be their blood.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

Lil prima donnas might get a scratch, can’t haz that!

        • Me The People

I saw something on reddit earlier, it was like:

Poll official: Would you like an “I voted sticker?”

Bernie Bro: AM I BEING DETAINED?

          • Serai 1

Reminds me of the letters that bewildered provincial governors sent to the Roman Emperor (this happened a number of times over the first couple of centuries CE), plaintively asking what they should do about the mobs of Christians that kept coming to their houses and DEMANDING to be persecuted. Usually the Emperor replied, “Hey, it’s your province. Do what you have to do.” Which usually ended up with the governor confronting the mob and telling them to go home and behave.

The mobs didn’t like that much.

      • alwayspunkindrublic

Exactly. They’re not going to get deported, they’re not going to die because Trump cancelled their health insurance. The price of lattes will probably stay the same, so it’s all good.

        • OrdinaryJoe

          LOL. Latte anarchists.

          • pianoplayer1

            Man-bun latte anarchists.

Please let’s not forget all the WOMEN who labored in the progressive trenches, serving the OH SO IMPORTANT men by getting coffee and answering phones. When they stepped up and said, “Okay, now what about us? What about women’s rights?” those good progressive men told them BACK TO THE COFFEE MACHINE BITCHES. Thus was the Second Wave born…

          • Or they mixed up Franken and Frank, as in Barney. I’ve done that before.

“Asked by Maddow if she thought she was ready to serve as President in the event of a tragedy if chosen as Clinton’s running mate, Warren said simply, “I do.””
Edit: I am over the idea that she shouldn’t be the V.P. nom. Reid thinks they can pull off a Senate majority with her on the ticket, a V.P. is only as weak or as powerful or weak as the President deigns them to be. She can lob bombs just as easily from the W.H. as from the Senate chamber…and muscle the Senate from there as well. Plus her spot on the ticket doubles the size of the ticket’s coat tails for the down stream races.
Plus: The two of them would be un-stoppable, and stomp a mudhole in Trump and the Republican party so big, it would take decades to fill it.
    You go girls.

    • Amy!

Think she may have taken note of Hillary’s strikingly effective monosyllabic responses during debates?

      • Sardonicuss

        I do

Mr. Trump, what do you think about this thing?
AAARRGHH bargle big words best words, sad pathetic more words, lots and lots of words to all say nothing at all because I do not really understand the question.

          Secretary Clinton, your reply?
          No, I’m good.

          • Serai 1

Or she just gestures at Trump and looks at the audience with SEE? WHAT DID I TELL YOU? on her face.

The universal hand gesture for jacking off would also be appropriate.

          • Serai 1

I developed one for girly bits as well. Put your index and middle fingers together, point them straight down, gather the rest of your fingers up into your palm, and move your hand up and down in a quick rubbing motion. Cracks everyone up when I do it.

Actually we’ve heard this argument WAY before. After Hitler took power in 1933 the newspaper of the Communist party, the Red Flag, triumphantly featured the slogan “nach Hitler us” (after Hilter, us) on every page. The Communist party had done everything in its power to bring Hitler into power in order to destroy its more moderate rival, the Socialists, who aligned themselves with the Weimar Republic and democracy. They fully expected that Hitler’s regime would be so disastrous that a revolution would ensue and they would then seize power.

It didn’t quite work out as planned. The slogan does contain an ironic grain of truth, if one considers that the Communists were able to seize power in at least part of Germany 12 years later after the collapse of the Hitler “disaster”. Unfortunately, the cost was 8 million Germans dead, 40 million dead throughout Europe, the Holocaust, and Germany in ruins.

Precipitating action simply to cause chaos, with the expectation that that will lead to a correction, is stupid and dangerous.

Ugh, armchair revolutionaries. Many times tired of people yapping about “the lesser of two evils,” because for once (or fine, twice–maybe thrice), that is not at all applicable. Also, there are many like me out there, who are subjected to taxation without representation, so we rely on those of you who have voting rights not to fuck it up for us. Trump makes my neighborhood children cry. Hillary just gives them faint embarrassment when she attempts a groovy young person dance she doesn’t really master. Ooooh! Evil v. evil!

    • kaw143

What really gets me are the people who say “I don’t know. I just don’t like her, you know?”

No, I don’t know. And neither do you. How can you “not like” someone you’ve never met? And what does “liking her” have to do with it? Are you under the impression that she’s running for the presidency of your personal fanclub, or something? You don’t HAVE to like her. What matters are the P-O-L-O-C-I-E-S, people. And “THEY AREN’T BERNIE’S!” isn’t good enough.

Hillary is a solid (actual) Democrat, with solid (actually) Democratic ideals and policies, who now has the backing of the majority of the Democratic party.

I don’t care if you “like” her. And neither does she. We are hiring her to do a job, not be your fucking bestie.

      • feministing

You know, l had a classics professor who was convinced that if he lived in ancient Greece, he would have been hanging out with Socrates. His ethnic background was northern European, and I kept (in a student kinda way) trying to point out that he would have been a slave, quite possibly a cleaner of public lavatories. People do have these weird narratives in their heads. We all think that we could be winners, even when the evidence is pretty clear that we aren’t. This syndrome does seem to hit white guys especially hard,
