What reason is someone using to avoid having to tip now? Oh, Apartheid? Well, that’s a new one. Cool.

An Oxford University student named Ntokozo Qwabe created something of a viral storm after celebrating his friend’s shitty treatment of a server in South Africa. The short version is Qwabe’s friend decided to leave a note to the group’s white South African server saying “WE WILL GIVE TIP WHEN YOU RETURN THE LAND” on a receipt at Cape Town’s Obz Cafe. Qwabe apparently thought this was so great he decided to make a long post about it on Facebook, even openly celebrating when the server, Ashleigh Schultz, burst into tears.

Here’s a screengrab of the since-deleted Facebook message Qwabe posted:
facebook

Now, before we go any further with this story, we need to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Apartheid was freaking horrible. Its closest post-slavery analogue in America was probably Jim Crow, but even that doesn’t really come close to summing up how terrible Apartheid was. It was messed up and awful and spawned countless atrocities. South Africa is understandably still dealing with the aftereffects of what can only be considered a long-running crime against human decency (one in which we, it’s important to note, were at least partially complicit — THANKS, REAGAN).

Here’s the thing, though: We feel reasonably confident in the assumption that Ashleigh Schultz isn’t responsible for any of the horrific actions of the Apartheid South African government. Call it a hunch, but we think we can assume she didn’t kill Steve Biko. We can also most likely assume that if she’s waiting tables, she is probably not a rich fat cat benefiting from stolen land. So punishing her by refusing to tip her because you’re (rightfully) pissed about the horrible legacy of Apartheid isn’t some valiant act of defiance against the oppressors — it’s a dick move. You’re not some hero standing up for social justice against the man, you’re a self-aggrandizing asshat. Also, anyone who enjoys the idea of making a random stranger cry is pretty much a douchebag, just on general principles.

Qwabe himself seemed to anticipate this argument in his Facebook post:

“It is irrelevant whether you personally have land/wealth or you don’t. Go to your fellow white people & mobilise for them to give us the land back.”

Oh cool, I’m sure Schultz will go ahead and place a call to the white people in South Africa, and suddenly the problem will be fixed. Yay for you, Qwabe! You solved the scourge of white supremacy, and all it took was being a bag of assholes to some random server just trying to do her damn job. You are the specialest of snowflakes. Seriously, this whole thing is so patently dickish that were it not for the screenshot evidence — and Qwabe/Schultz not denying that the incident actually took place — we would’ve thought it was a hoax, and that’s even leaving aside Qwabe’s odd, recurring vendetta against the correct use of the word “reluctantly.”

Schultz herself will be fine: a crowdfunding campaign for her was set up by someone in Louisiana, of all places, and has since raised over $6800, which actually brings up another important point. Incredibly (and believe us, nothing about this story is as shocking to us as the sentence we’re about to type), it was summed up intelligently and succinctly by a Facebook commenter named Orlole Friedemann.

“Firstly, what Qwabe and his friend did was deplorable […] so doing because the server is white, and then mocking her on social media, is reprehensible. Secondly […] many black servers deal with macro and microagressions [sic] on a daily basis, and no social media storm results. This is not to say that a reaction to the mistreatment of the server was wrong, but it does throw into strong relief the different responses to white and black pain.”

#TeamOrloleFriedemann. We’re not even going to pretend we can sum up or make any arguments better than Friedemann did here, because it’s basically perfect. While Qwabe is a dick and we feel for Schultz, let’s not pretend black servers (who indisputably get screwed over on tips to a disproportionate degree) would get anything like the response Schultz has.

Anyway, don’t screw over your server because you have an ax to grind, everybody please try to treat each other with basic decency and kindness, the end.

Yes, but did the restaurant also commit the atrocity of serving canned clams?

  • Lizzietish81

I will refuse to tip male servers until they fix Rape Culture

  • MsAnthropesMr

How does Starbuck intend to handle this poorly? That’s what I want to know.

    • Redgyal

They’ll have “Slap a Caucasian Day”.

      • MsAnthropesMr

        With a fish, perhaps.

      • kindness

This Slap a Caucasian Day…Can we choose where we get slapped? Possibly a little spanky session while I’m waiting for my latte?

        • Redgyal

          Sounds good to me.

          • kindness

Do you want whipped creme with that latte?

    • Abyss

They’re putting a new Starbucks in Capetown.

  • Malmborg Implano

This is just common garden variety bullying. It comes in all colors and socioeconomic levels. I experience it all the time in my own work. I would give this server the advice that was given to me by an [Africanamerican] public service consultant: “Don’t let them steal your joy.”

  • MsAnthropesMr

How ’bout all Wonketeers tip well today?

    • AntiDerpomeme

I’m willing to bet that all Wonketeers tip well every day, because empathy (and common decency).

      • MsAnthropesMr

I know I do. But today, I will think I’ll tip a little more.

      • Jay Vaughn

And we all worked shitty service jobs.

    • Abyss

I dunno about all Wonketeers, but I’d bet 20% of my paycheque that all Pinkhammers do.

  • Jay Vaughn

I’m rarely for actually beating customers. . .

    • SmotPoker

Spent about 6 months as a waiter, and I’m positive you’ll be singing a different tune. It might not even take the full 6 months before you’re ready to stab about 50% of them in the face with a salad fork.

      • Jay Vaughn

That’s just poor manners. Everyone knows the polite method of utensil maiming is grapefruit spoon to the eyes.

      • Celtic_Gnome

Never worked as a waiter, but I was told the motto of the food service industry is, “The only good customer is a dead customer.”

      • DarthwingDuck

I moved from working the customer service desk at a big box retailer to working the customer service desk at a computer repair store.

Retail customer service is nasty and brutish; computer repair costumer service is the 9th circle of hell.

Now she should use it for a down payment on land.

American “Go Fuck Yourself” Christianity versus Actual Christianity.

    • Calli Arcale

As a Christian myself who actually does tithe, I honestly think in that case you would have good justification. After all, what you put in the basket is gonna be used to fund that particular church’s ministries, with a portion also going (most likely) to whatever synod or dicese or whatever they belong to. So if you disagree with how they’re going about their missions, I’d say not giving to them is perfectly reasonable.

  • Jay Vaughn

Also reading about him that guy is just a huge fucking cockbag. I really fucking hope the Rhodes Scholarship kicks his shit bagging ass to the fucking curb, like he dared them too.

    • Redgyal

Irony time: Rhodes Scholarship was created by the guy who first colonized South Africa for England.

      • Pickwicknext

        And invented dynamite

        • Biff52

          Alfred Nobel libel!

          • Pickwicknext

Damn. I am a idiot today

      • Jay Vaughn

And this asshole lead the campaign to remove his statue.

        • Redgyal

Ouch! That takes biting the hand that feeds you to a higher level. I’m no fan of Cecil Rhodes but I also wouldn’t apply for a Rhodes Scholarship. I’m principled in my failure.

      • Reddishrabbit

He also created DeBeers, the once monopolist diamond company.

      • Lina A

He’s a total shitweasel, but I can’t exactly fault him for that. What would happen if black people avoided any opportunity rooted in the providence of white people who have historically held way more power and wealth, within a multiracial society? It would take limited opportunity and knock it down to virtually none, ensuring that black people would likely never be able to get ahead.

If I were said shitweasel, I’d see it as an opportunity to make Cecil Rhodes roll over in his grave.

        • Redgyal

Yeah. You know I was thinking, what would have happened if he didn’t say anything about what he did to the waitress on Facebook? If he had not tipped her but kept his reason to himself, no one would know and be able to criticize. The waitress would the be left to speculate whether or not it had to do with the color of her skin. People really need to learn how to be mean and biggoted in the right way. Right?

          • Lina A

I wasn’t saying that I didn’t fault him for being a shitweasel. I TOTALLY fault him for being a shitweasel. A shitweasel is a shitweasel, as evidenced by the fact that I CALLED HIM A FUCKING SHITWEASEL.

Maybe you should try re-reading it, before reacting, next time. I’m saying that I don’t fault him for being a RHODES SCHOLAR, FFS. I thought that distinction was clear by the text which followed. It can be totally valid for him to take advantage of that opportunity, for the reasons I mentioned. As shitweasel-y as he is, he’s probably aware of the origins of his scholarship, and people pointing out that he’s a Rhodes scholar like they’ve cleverly uncovered a hypocrite don’t have the argument they seem to think they have, there.

          • Redgyal

I got your point the first time I read it. You’re right, he is most likely aware of the connection.

    • Frank Underboob

Uh. Do you know what Cecil Rhodes is famous for, & what made him rich?

      • Jay Vaughn

        Yes, that’s why I’m saying that guy’s a hypocrite.

        • Frank Underboob

Ah. Sorry, I misread you. :)

  • SuspectedDemocrat

That line about taking up arms is just downright disturbing. Like, why are you crying when I haven’t even committed mass murder yet?

  • ConnieHinesDorothyProvine

that was a weird thing to do

  • HanBarbara

I’ve actually been to South Africa. It’s a beautiful place, geographically like SoCal with opposite seasons and more interesting animals. I’ve stayed at places where whites own huge, beautiful farms and ranches. Their argument is that they didn’t create apartheid, and they inherited the land. In some cases, the government has tried to buy the land, but for various reasons, they don’t want to sell.
In the meantime, many blacks are living in the same townships where they always lived, in just as grim situations. (There is an emerging black middle and upper class) The only difference is now they can leave voluntarily, but they are dealing with their own inheritance of poverty and everything that goes with it. Any of this sound familiar?
I don’t know how it all gets resolved, I hope peacefully. Like our own legacy, Apartheid will poison things for a long time.
I’m not sure how a waiter is supposed to fix any of this. A douchebag is a douchebag in any country.

    • sw19womble

Agreed. For instance, I think it’s slowly changing, but there’s at least two entire generations of younger South Africans who were indoctrinated to believe that “the blacks can’t look after themselves” in a very polite, patrician white supremacist way.
I was shocked the first few times I came across South Africans who had moved to London and were otherwise very balanced and moderate, but the entrenched ideas that came out of their mouths when it came to POC was shocking – mostly by the calm and offhand way they would mention it.
Either things have gotten better in the past decade or so, or else white Saffers have realised they keep their ideas on race to themselves.
      Hopefully it’s the former.

      • HanBarbara

That is funny you should say that- when we drove by townships I’d hear comments like “How can they live like that?” Welllll…in the US there’s plenty of whites who live that way, too…

    • Frank Underboob

I was under the impression that the post-Apartheid gov’t had annexed a lot of white landholdings?

      • HanBarbara

I have to plead ignorance, I only had direct dealings with a few families, and that was 6 or 7 years ago. At the time they were offering to buy, but not at prices people considered attractive. Maybe things have changed

        • Frank Underboob

I’m talking about back when Apartheid was officially over, & there was a black gov’t, so decades ago. It was back before the Interwubs, so all I know is what I read in the papers here, & what I’ve been told, so I’m pretty hazy about the details too.

          • Lina A

I should track down my ageing aunt (well, first cousin, once removed. “Aunt” is a shorter term, meaning about the same thing, generationally), about this. She’s a retired journalist who was anti-apartheid, focusing on that over her career. Later on, she was apparently doing a lot of writing about the retaliation against the white farmers (as in, on a criminal level. Like murder). She might also know what is up with the redistribution of lands. Last I checked, my mother was in touch with her. Unfortunately, I don’t think this will be a quick answer, to come back with.

          • Frank Underboob

Please do ask if you get a convenient opportunity, I’d love to hear what an expert has to say.

  • JustPixelz

    Rumpism is spreading.

  • vivian

I’d like to posit a theory: Human intelligence is collective. As the number of people increases we individually become less intelligent, assuming the collective total is a constant. This would go a long way toward explaining why most people who have lived long lives believe the world is a stupider, worse place than it was when they were younger…

    • Delu

It doesn’t explain the collective stupid in some places over others.

      • SmotPoker

Too stupid to move away generation after generation so the land become infested with stupid.

    • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

      Actually, you are wrong!

The aggregation of information in groups result in decisions that are often better than could have been made by any single member of the group aka That time Francis Galton correctly estimated the weight of an ox with the help of a bunch of people at the county fair.

      • vivian

Of course I’m wrong. I was thinking for myself! But you have me convinced. Obviously the best results come from groups. This explains demagoguery and mob violence! I’ll call Sacco and Vanzetti and let them know that justice was served.

I’m sure they didn’t tip because they are cheap and dicks and actually some asswipe in Louisianna starting up a gofundme makes perfect sense- white woman in peril give all your money! Qwabe should be rebuked for being an asshole but $6800 in funding because of it? Yeah something tells me skin color enters into that one as well and fuck you rednecks.

    • Jen_Baker_VA

Louisiana? Doing something based on skin color??? NEVER!!!!

    • Lina A

I agree with the Louisiana bit, but being a dirty liberal feminist SJW and all, I have been seeing a bit too much of the radical fringe (every movement has one), lately, and I can TOTALLY believe that they`d do this in the name of “activism”. It’s like no common ground can be found, simply as human beings, on principal, because “opposing racial groups”. Systemic racism doesn’t exist in reverse, but actively treating the people who just happen to look like the historical oppressors, and yes, benefit from the privileges carved out by those historical oppressors, without knowing said people… it’s a bad move. What if this young woman is a single mum, has a disability, is about to lose her home if she doesn’t make rent, or any other number of misfortunes which can affect us all, regardless of race? What if she is already involved in the cause for racial equality and restitution? What if she has a black South African spouse? What if she has children with said spouse? These customers didn’t know that, and they didn’t bother to. They just used her as a punching bag to get back at, over a few centuries of colonial bullshit perpetuated by others who looked like her.

Attacking individual strangers who haven’t done anything to you is cruel and ineffective “activism”. Government bodies, powerful private bodies, and wealthy public figures are where these angry arguments should be aimed at.

    • Frank Underboob

I have. I’ve even worked with a few.
And while apartheid was totally evil & I wish it’d ended decades sooner than it did, there was – & still is – a lot of retribution against white people there because of it, many of whom didn’t do anything to deserve it. I knew a guy whose dad was murdered that way at the time, & I wonder if this server had suffered a similar loss.

    • Jay Vaughn

It’s really funny to call white South Africans racist when they aren’t. Or call them Australians.

They should be more like Murika. We got over our racism problems a while ago. Hell, we even got us a blah POTUS!

    • Antonin Dvorak

Only decades after South Africa did!

These guys make the white racists arguments for them by being the same as the white racists except they are racists of a different color.

Yep, that about sums it up.

Their argument by the way, is the same in concept to the racist remarks like “all them blacks so violent because they don’t have no fathers.”

Ironically, these guys are much closer to the very people they are bitching about for Apartheid than they think. After all, they are doing to white people the same things those guys were doing to black people and for similar generalized reasons.

Nelson Mandela would weep were he still alive. Perhaps it’s a good thing he isn’t anymore.

See, the reason I stopped hanging out with anarchists is after a while you get so far left that you end up on the far right.

  • Carlill

Can you publicise this if they have diplomatic immunity?

  • HogeyeGrex

Yep. Way to further the revolution there, big guy.

    Let’s go do some crimes.
Yeah. Let’s go get sushi and not pay.

Is this the South African equivalent of a Millenial? Sure sounds like one.

Maybe he visited the manager’s office and threatened to cut his/her tongue out.

  • 2Table

The outrage about this grosses me out. Let’s be real about the fact that this “scandal” is a bunch of people from the US and UK lecturing a black South African guy who was BORN UNDER APARTHEID for being too mad about it and not being nice to a white waitress.

Sure, it seems rude. I can’t imagine thinking it was my place to judge him. I think it’s a little ridiculous that a white woman BORN UNDER APARTHEID would burst into tears because a black person doesn’t want to tip her because she’s white. I understand why Qwabe would feel contemptuous of that. This is probably the first time she was treated poorly because of her race. Maybe time for a little reflection.

“We can also most likely assume that if she’s waiting tables, she is probably not a rich fat cat benefiting from stolen land.”
As a white woman in Capetown, yeah, Schultz has benefited from stolen land. You’re applying US standards where they don’t apply. “If she’s waiting tables” as though that’s some sign of poverty in a country where under 20% of the black population has running water in their homes.

It’s funny how often those yelling HAVE SOME EMPATHY have no fucking empathy whatsoever themselves.

      • Calli Arcale

And often don’t realize that we are allowed to have empathy for more than one person at a time, and in fact do not actually have to take sides at all.

    • enfilmigult

would burst into tears because a black person doesn’t want to tip her
      because she’s white.

Yeah, that tends to happen when you assume that his motives are the biggest element of that situation for her as well as him. She must be crying about his not wanting to tip her because of her place in South African society, not because she actually was stiffed for reasons having nothing to do with her work, and still has bills to pay.

    • WORSEKarma

Little Dipshit is too young to have been born under Apartheid, fucktard. More to the point, this slimy little shit is a RHODES SCHOLAR. He has more “privilege” than 9/10 of the fucking population of the fucking world, courtesy of an endowment from the estate of the very person he hates so much. He’s a typical Malignant Narcissist Millennial Special Turdblossom, and deserves absolutely NOTHING he has been given (not “earned”… BEEN GIVEN).

      • 2Table

Apartheid ended in 1994. He’s 25, so he was born in 1991 or 1990. I sure am a “fucktard.”

    *Facepalm*

Look, actually decolonizing the country, and sending all of the people whose ancestors aren’t originally from the region back to where they originated, at this point, is not going to happen. Smashing the colonial mindsets in countries, and resolving disparities in opportunities and treatment as human beings, that’s the best we can hope for. Anything else is extremely unrealistic. Demands should be made to wealthy/authoritative/government bodies to make amends and to right the wrongs of racial bias within a country.

Petty sniping of THIS nature, however, is counterproductive and just uncalled for. Being a piece of shit to a server who is trying to pay their bills (because ALL servers are just trying to pay their fucking bills) because the highlight of your activist career is to make your big political statement to a low wage earner at a fucking café, isn’t going to get people to warm to the notion of what you’re arguing. I’m not saying to kiss ass, I’m just saying not to BE one, to the little guy. Individual strangers who clearly aren’t well off financially, even if they benefit from white privilege, may suffer from oppression on the basis of gender, disability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic upbringing, etcetera. Perhaps this server is a single mother, perhaps she is married to a black South African spouse, perhaps she already supports the cause of justice for black South Africans, and already does her best to bring this message into white spaces.

These customers couldn’t know that, though, because they automatically assumed that, because she is white, she is unaware of her privilege, or is aware but doesn’t do anything to try and make things better. There are positive ways of bringing up the issue in conversation with new people in appropriate settings (maybe not with one’s server, because they’re busy working) about social justice issues, to get the word to spread and take hold in others, and actually effect some real change… without being some uber-douche who celebrates sticking it to whitey by making individual strangers cry. I don’t think it’s tone policing to say that when you can’t even show some human decency, people aren’t going to be receptive to your message. This is just human nature, and expecting someone to react positively to being treated like shit by having them shoulder the blame for hundreds of years of colonialism will leave you waiting a loooooong time. If you treat me like shit, and I’ve done nothing to you, personally, then it’s not going to flick some switch in me that has me thinking, “oh! They have a point! Eye for an eye is just GREAT!!!” Everyone deserves at least a minimum standard of respect, just as a HUMAN FUCKING BEING.

So… tackle the power you know, in this way, but not the individual strangers you don’t.
