Totally not racist.
Totally not racist.

Remember that Supreme Court case Shelby County v. Holder, in which the court decided that America had totally gotten over racism and therefore there was no longer a need for racist states like Alabama and Mississippi and Tennessee and Arkansas and South Carolina (ET CETERA!) to consult with the Justice Department before passing new, racist voting laws? And remember how Alabama’s Republican-controlled legislature passed one of the nation’s harshest voter ID laws, in order to make it more difficult for poors and blacks to vote? (Yes, we know wingnuts prefer to use the term “voter fraud,” one of the most creative euphemisms for “nigger” they’ve come up with yet!)

And remember how Alabama has ALWAYS had this little problem when it comes to trying to suppress the black vote? Remember when President Obama attended the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma, where civil rights activists fighting for, among other things, the right to vote, were beaten by the police, one of the most violent events to transpire before the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965?

Anyway, here’s a new thing:

Take a look at the 10 Alabama counties with the highest percentage of non-white registered voters. That’s Macon, Greene, Sumter, Lowndes, Bullock, Perry, Wilcox, Dallas, Hale, and Montgomery, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s office. Alabama, thanks to its budgetary insanity and inanity, just opted to close driver license bureaus in eight of them. All but Dallas and Montgomery will be closed.

Closed. In a state in which driver licenses or special photo IDs are a requirement for voting.

In fact, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced that, thanks to the shitty budget passed by the shitty legislature and signed by the shitty governor, it’s closing THIRTY-ONE driver’s license offices across the state. But don’t say they’re doing it for racist reasons, it’s just how the state is broke. And that’s true! Alabama’s one of those mooch states that sucks the blue states’ dicks for sweet government cash, then bitches when it can’t pay its bills. (Though a local columnist suggests the state is not broke, but rather stupid and lazy. Teach the controversy!)

But so weird how they picked those counties. It’s got to be some kind of crazy coincidence that “Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed.” And that so many of those people are poor. And that it’s a lot damn harder for those people to travel to the next county for a license than it is for overgrown rich white fraternity boy Tucker S. Dickinbottom IV, of the Mountain Brook Dickinbottoms, to drive his Land Rover a little further away to get his driver’s license renewed.

Nah, not racist at all. As we wonksplained when we covered Obama’s speech at Selma, “21 million Americans don’t have the ID that voter ID laws require. And maybe it’s an issue because those people are disproportionately poor, minorities, and elderly.” AND HOW DO THOSE PEOPLE VOTE? Well, they’re sure not voting for Tucker Dickinbottom’s daddy, that’s for certain.

And to be completely fair, and as John Archibald at AL.com points out, the powers-that-be might not specifically have been thinking, “Hey, what if we did racism and disenfranchisement to The Blacks today?” when they made this decision. As Archibald says, “no matter the intent, the consequence is the same.”

The history and the current reputation of the state of Alabammy are so completely marred by racial hatred, discrimination and violence that any elected official in that state should probably be required to TRIPLE-check that every single thing they do, down to taking a shit, is not in some way racist, intentional or not.

And then check the toilet bowl a fourth time, just for certain, and also because a lot of Republicans in Alabama like to take pictures of their turds for their scrapbooks, we are guessing.

    I have been led to believe that several southern state are nice places with nice people i them. Alabama cannot possibly be one of them. Cut that white-hot mess loose.

    • DoILookAmused2u ?

      But you can buy up to 500 gram firework cakes, and 85 gram mortar shells up to 2″ in diameter without restriction.

      2 out of 5 fires in Alabama are started by fireworks. woo hoo.

      • nmmagyar

        I live a few miles from a Reservation. I think you can buy Howitzers there without any pesky laws getting in the way.

        And you can buy those bombs fireworks right next door to the largest amusement park in the state, which is across the street from the largest liquor store in the state, across the street from the cheapest gas in the nation. Whoot!

    Yes, Mr. President?

    Look asshole. You re-open those driver license locations now or every federal employee leaves Alabama and every federal facility they operate closes. I will fuck your state up. Got it? I will make it my purpose in life to break your balls, assuming you have any. Understand me?

    • nmmagyar

      NM has closed virtually all MVD offices in metropolitan areas (shut up, we do have them) and has allowed MVD Fee Agents to pop up everywhere (like Starbucks), where you can pay and extra 20 bucks for the honor of renewing you license and you want to spend less than 4 hours in line.

      • kindness

        We can do it on line here in California. No surcharges. Yea, socialist hell, I know.

        • nmmagyar

          You can renew car registration online, but can only do some license/ID renewals on the ‘puter. I think they want to keep the photos somewhat current so you can renew once, but have to do it in person after that. Or something.

          • Left Coast Tom

            In CA driver license renewals can be done online (or by mail) twice in a row (5-year extension), then must be done in person. Unless you’re over 70. Or a bad driver. Or violated a promise to appear in court. Car registration…yeah, online.

            But I think the issue in this post about Alabama is getting a license and/or ID for the first time, so you can vote in Alabama, which probably requires an in-person visit everywhere.

  • memzilla

      • Jenny

        Red x’s yes, but I wouldn’t trust most of these people to hit anything with their guns. Motherfuckers can’t even keep their trucks in one lane let alone hit a target.

        The registrars’ are apolitical when it comes to registration. Supposed to be anyways. Williamson county is kind of known for being fringe republicans. Even the Austin republicans and libertarians are like fuck those wackos in Willco. So everyone is presumed to be one of them. There is a small group of liberals here, mostly college kids, but I’m sure you’re put on some sort of commie list if you fraternize about!

        I’m actually registered Republican. I vote Republican in the primaries and Democratic in everything else. I try to put my vote towards the least insane candidate. But it doesn’t work out usually. Too many loons voting.

        At least my mailbox is full of interesting political propaganda. Conservatives have us beat in every way when it comes to that.

      I didn’t see any article about the DMV, but did learn the Huckster is in Bama. And I quote, “There is a lot of repair work to be done,” Huckabee told the audience. “Nobody respects us.” The comments were quite wonkettish to my surprise. Then I read an article about a blah 16 year old running for president and the comments restored my faith in Alabamans unabashed embrace of racist ideals.

  • VandeGraf

    It will take a lawsuit in federal court, but it will be easy to demonstrate that the state of Alabama has thrown up actual barriers to electoral participation. They will either be forced to relent on the license for voting registration requirement, change it to some other form of ID, or reopen something like licensing in some of the abandoned areas. The electorate should not have to put up with any of that.

    • ibwilliamsi

      Unfortunately it won’t be heard until 2023.

  • LarkintheAM

    I think it’s time for the ACLU & the Southern Policy Law Center to sue the state of Alabama and for the whites in the state who actually believe in racial equality (I have confidence that there are more than a handful) to partner with Black churches and other local agencies to start organizing transportation pools to get drivers licenses/IDs for everyone eligible to have one and to get them registered to vote also, too. Don’t let the assholes win.

    • DoILookAmused2u ?

      I don’t think that ever stops, but Alabama keeps legislating new ways to get sued faster than the legal system can work.

    • Local Mojo

      From on the ground in Alabama: our Blah Democratic politicians are a whole different variety of crazy, but every bit as crazy and corrupt as our white Republican ones, maybe even more so.

      • LarkintheAM

        Perhaps, but that doesn’t mean that the red end of the crazy spectrum should be able to control whether their constituents are able to vote. With any luck, they’ll be able to use that blatant racism as an organizing tool, secure their districts’ ability to participate and sanity will prevail. :-)

He was originally from Birmingham and was there to celebrate a group of female minority dental student’s pending graduation from UAB. I was given a schooling in the abysmal politics running rampant in that state, but left feeling hopeful that there might be more people like these folks pushing their state in a better direction. My son brought a letter home from a class mate of his today. Mind you, they are ten.
    The letter says that some people think slavery was bad but since they had no clean water and food in Africa they were better off and it was sure a shame that all those white boys on both sides had to die for slavery when it was really good. And that it was only my son’s opinion if he disagreed.
    Ten. Fucking. Years. Old.
    I just can’t even anymore. No more compromise. No more debate with these fucknuts. They are not Christians, they are not Americans, they may not even be human any longer. • Jen_Baker_VA

        Maybe it is about time they put the Small House of Uncle Thomas back into the curriculum.

    • handyhippie65

      OMG! that is…i can’t even think of a description for this. where do you live? just so i can be sure to never visit. i mean, you seem like a nice, intelligent person, but your neighbors are just horrible fucking people, and i use the term “people” loosely. this kinda thing would make me move. all of my sympathy to you, and yours.

      After reading Vegan and Tiara’s comment below, I wonder how it would go over if you son suggested that it would be OK buy his classmate’s family because at least they could go to church and your son would change their water bowl every day. We get dumber by the day I swear.

    I live in Alabama, and I am hopping mad about this budget issue. I hadn’t considered the implications with the voter id law, but this budget is nonsense. I honestly want every politician in the state recalled regardless of party. I want to know where our state tax dollars are going. Because the state isn’t providing any services that warrant the budget shortage. This state should not be broke, and some politicians need to called to answer for their budget management if it is.

  • Cismontane

    hmmm… so now we know where the president should resettle all of those Syrian and African refugees… just to annoy the Alabamian master race.

    • eddi

      They have suffered enough. Just send the National Guard and US Marshals back to arrest the Alabama Legislature for violating the Civil Rights Act (again).

  • Jerry Noneofyourbizz

    I have yet to see any evidence of this “in person, at the polling place” voter fraud that showing an ID is suppose to stop.

  • Putty

    Call me crazy, call me madcap, but I keep a list of things I’m gonna do when I win the lottery. (I know, my son thinks I’m nuts, also too.) New Item:

    Hire lots of buses;
    Go to Alabama;
    Recruit volunteers;
    Go to counties that are closing drivers’ license offices;
    Offer free rides, lunches, childcare, etc. and take anyone who wants to travel to renew licenses and register to vote;
    As we leave Alabama, drive by state house and display signs that say, Take dat, racist losers!

    • Takoma DC

      Putty, I’m with you but maybe we don’t need to wait to hit the state lotto jackpot? We could use a crowd funding source to raise $. Hire local volunteers and give them a daily stipend for gas and food?

  • Sterculius

    Republican Game Plan: cut taxes and the rich and businesses, air claiming that the astonishing new prosperity will actually bring in MORE tax revenue. When tax revenue plummets, sadly turn out your pockets and claim there is no more money for roads, public services, social safety nets, and then raise the needed revenue with sneaky regressive sales taxes, gas taxes, and every other kind of tax that targets the poor and middle class. Austerity!

    • Michael Kelley

      dont forget big surcharges for parking tickets that balloon a $50 ticket to $3000 that you pay in instalments with the threat of jail for missing any deadlines!

  • Takoma DC

    I wonder if there’s a way to donate money for id’s for low-income residents in these shit states and a way to provide transportation to the dmv? All in time for them to vote in the presidential election.

    • longtail

      Not since they deep sixed ACORN.

      • Takoma DC

        I was thinking a GoFundMe campaign and then using the money to get ID cards for as many residents in these fucked up areas as possible.

        • Brian Gilmer

          Then AL will just change the design of the ID and require new documents.

  • Ryan Denniston

    I got a feeling the Justice Department will be calling soon.

    And my law review didn’t pick my article last fall on all this Voter Suppression™ BS going on all over the country and went with that girl’s “New Uber Laws needed” article.

    Voter rights not a big deal they said, won’t really come up next year they said……AHHHHH!!!!!

    (Anger derived mostly from Voter Suppression™ BS, but ALSO TOO NOT PICKING MY ARTICLE!)

    In all fairness Alabama is providing mobile registration vans but they are equipping them with hemi engines so they can speed through black neighborhoods.

    • Carlos Dangler

      LMAO

  • David Fenelus

    Great read. I used this article as a reference for this article right here…
