My friends, my friends, my friends…FIVE AND A HALF YEARS, ALAN

A rightwing radio talker has announced what’s sure to be a turning point in the movement to restore constitutional something-or-other to the taking-back of America, and also the freedom and such as, for our once-great nation, hooray! Calling the planned fiasco “Operation Detain McCain” — mostly because the last two words rhyme — the alleged “grassroots movement” plans to send homeless veterans to occupy Sen. John McCain’s Phoenix office until he ends homelessness among vets and also answers for his crimes or something. This is not related to that one Oath Keepers guy who wants McCain executed for treason; despite the “Detain McCain” moniker, there doesn’t actually appear to be a plan to arrest the senator, but all those vets camping out in his office should slow him down some should he try to get to the coffeemaker, so same thing.

Operation Rolling Dunderhead is the brainchild of Pete Santilli, the nice man who in 2013 offered to shoot Hillary Clinton right in her vagina for her crimes in Benghazi, and who helped organize the “Truckers shut down DC” rally that attracted as many as a few dozen angry big rig drivers. Oh, and of course he’s also a 9/11 and Sandy Hook “Truther.”

Still, he knows how to capture the momentum of the political moment. Well after Donald Trump has moved on to far greater inanities, Santilli’s latched on to Trump’s insult of John McCain as a POW loser, and is ready to bring the man to justice. So what exactly is gonna happen? Veterans will “descend upon Senator John McCain’s office” to demand:

that he be held accountable, arrested, tried and convicted for his shameful acts against the Veterans of the United States. Homeless Veterans will march upon McCain’s office and fellow Veterans will demand that unless Senator McCain doesn’t immediately alleviate their homelessness, homeless Veterans will be encouraged to camp out and live at his office indefinitely as a visual reminder of his willful negligence.

The demonstration, set to begin Sept. 5, also sets a deadline of Sept. 5 for John McCain to fix everything, which means he’ll be one busy guy that day. To avoid arrest, trial, and conviction, he must:

(a) put a roof over their head & give them an environment where they can get on their feet and become productive and (b) get them adequate healthcare they deserve. Veterans are dying on waiting lists & 22 commit suicide every day! If McCain has not fixed the issue; WE THE PEOPLE will give our Veterans a new home until McCain decides to get off his but an do what we tell him to do — TAKE CARE OF OUR VETERANS! Veterans will live at McCain’s office, and We The People will make sure they are not messed with until McCain solves the problem.

Thank goodness they got that WE THE PEOPLE line in there, or we might not have known they are serious wingnuts. Still, it’s actually nice that Mr. Santilli cares so much about homeless people! We’d have assumed his solution to homelessness would be to tell people to man up, get jobs, and clean up their acts. But now he’s sounding like some kind of community organizer, demanding that the government take care of a bunch of people. Why, a housing and jobs program for vets sounds suspiciously like welfare, doesn’t it?

Santilli also has a list of other crimes McCain has to answer for, in addition to his offenses against veterans by making them homeless and not adequately funding the VA. McCain also needs to be tried for:

  • Aiding & abetting the enemy of the United States of America in the War On Terror. John McCain has met with, supplied, assisted and supported ISIS/Al-Qaeda in Syria.
  • Intentionally, willfully and has been directly [sic] involved in the cover-up of evidence regarding the attack on the U.S.S. Liberty by the Israeli Military.
  • Abandoning untold numbers of POW/MIA’s from the Vietnam War

Well of course. It’s just not a wingnut vendetta if you can’t toss in the thousands of POWs left behind by Rambo. You know they’re still in captivity today, because of all the flags! And of course why not throw in the 1967 USS Liberty incident, which we guess is the senator’s responsibility because his father, Admiral John S. McCain, ordered the Navy’s investigation of the incident. John McCain, the eventual senator, was a Navy pilot on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal in the Pacific at the time, but maybe he sneaked off to cover up Israeli treachery in his spare time.

Santilli warned McCain in a letter that even if he stays away from his office, the vets will be there to shame him — thousands, probably, which, given Santilli’s organizational brilliance, will mean five guys or so — and that this time, McCain won’t escape justice:

Unfortunately for you, your negligence by covering up the USS Liberty, as well as your treasonous support of ISIS will be exposed, and you must be held accountable Constitutionally & lawfully — this is non-negotiable, and you will not have a choice in evading your unlawful conduct in this regard.

We’ll keep you updated on John McCain’s arrest (or inconveniencing) by these brave patriots, and let you know the minute he personally ends homelessness and admits the truth about all the POWS still hidden away in Vietnam.

    (a) put a roof over their head & give them an environment where they can get on their feet and become productive and (b) get them adequate healthcare they deserve

I think that a jobs program and single-payer health care might also help. Or perhaps, providing subsidies for education. I support these goals 100%!

    • Thaumaturgist

In theory, veterans already have single payer. It’s called the Veterns Asministration.

But W had the cut taxes and start a war and that led to economies here and there in the U.S. government. Sequester has been used to preserve those economies.

If we don’t have to worry about ex-NFL sportsball players, why should we have to worry about vets?

      • Lot_49

Hengngh, VA is more Socialized Medicine™, in that government employees working in government-owned facilities are providing, or not providing, the medical care. Medicare and Medicaid are single-payer.

I want to be clear on the two kinds of superior medical care and health insurance the GOPers will never let us have.

      • HobbesEvilTwin

Not all veterans qualify for VA healthcare.

        • Thaumaturgist

Until 2003 all or virtually all veterans did quality. In 2003, the VA started rationing health care, reserving capacity for veterans who could not afford private care. Sequester has limited the availability of healthcare to veterans who do qualify. But, to answer your specific question, someone who cannot afford a place to live falls within the income limits and has a right to VA care.

Other suggestions for McCain’s new names for Arizona mountains: Mt. McCain (uh, no thanks; give the job to Sarah); Mt. That should keep John busy.

    • bozilingus

Just for veterans, to hell with others.

      • Latverian Diplomat

Yeah, somebody jerked off to Starship Troopers a few too many times, I think. (For the book, once is too many times, for the movie, the too many line is a little higher, because co-ed shower scene, obvs).

        • bozilingus

I am a big fan of the book. I do not see it as some others do, as any kind of Federal Service (public service) being necessary for citizenship did not sound like a bad requirement. If you don’t have any “skin” in the game, do you have a right to complain about how you are governed?
As for the movie, needz moar shower scenes.

          • Latverian Diplomat

The book includes a few asides that make the idea less onerous. First, any noncitizen can at anytime request to serve, and they must find some service that is appropriate to your abilities. (e.g., even people physically unfit to serve in the military are entitled to some form of service that the government must create for them). Also, it need not be dangerous, only difficult.

The second is that suffrage is the only privilege veterans earn, and they only receive it after leaving active service. Most non-citizens don’t even miss not having the right to vote, because the government, well run by veterans, takes good care of everyone.

But this second aspect is problematic. While the thesis of the novel is that having served the public, veterans would be “better people” for the experience and take good care of everyone, history has shown that any group that suffrage is restricted to tends to promote its own interest over those of groups that do not have suffrage. There’s no real reason to “buy” the premise that veterans would be immune to this temptation.

Still, I think it’s an interesting thought experiment.

A second problem is that a lot of “fans” of the idea ignore the nuances. To them. service means only military combat service, which means only healthy, aggressive, red-blooded males need apply.

          • tomamitai

“If you don’t have any “skin” in the game, do you have a right to complain about how you are governed?”

Well, if you believe that governments derive “their just powers from the consent of the governed”, a concept I read in some olde tyme document, I don’t see how you can justify limiting the right to vote or hold office to people who have completed a term of service to the government, even if it didn’t involve putting your life at risk by serving in combat or by volunteering to be a guinea pig in medical experiments or as a tester for space suits, which if I recall correctly are the types of non-military service that Heinlein talked about in the book. Of course, that wasn’t the only philosophical disagreement Heinlein had with “The American Creed”, he was also pretty contemptuous of the “all men are created equal” part, as, apparently, was the man who wrote it.

The movie needed more than more shower scenes, it also could have used some fully nude sexposition instead of those hokie news clips.

          • bozilingus

Wasn’t there a time when only male property owners were allowed to vote? Changes happen over time, and there are some high schools requiring students to give a number of hours of “volunteer service” for graduation. Would it be better for a constitutional amendment requiring some “give back” to obtain citizenship?

          • tomamitai

I must be too cynical, because I believe such a requirement for citizenship would be gamed to make it easy on the rich and to create a permanent underclass of desperate exploitable people. We already have that, so why mess with the Constitution?

    • malsperanza

Ah but veterans are different! Never mind that 1/3 of homeless people are veterans – that’s entirely unrelated.

The GOP’s ability to slash veterans’ benefits while simultaneously bemoaning the treatment of veterans is one of their perennial masterpieces of Orwellian Doublespeak.

    • Thaumaturgist

The weed of stupidity must be watered from time to time with the urine of nitwits.

  • MrBlobfish

How come I don’t have my own radio show? Surely I can come up with something just as crazy as this. Obama/Holder/Sharpton.

    • chicken thief

Chicago Thug politics and what Hillary doesn’t want you to know about her emails and the Clinton Foundation donations!

    • nmmagyar

But can you do it for 2-3 hours a day, 5 days a week? I can do crazy convincingly, but I can only do it for short periods of time.

      • tomamitai

But isn’t that just because you’re afraid that if you loosen the reins on your inner wacko and let it run free, you’ll like it so much you won’t be able to stop? That never happens with me, of course, just asking for a friend.

  • chicken thief

McCain should also too tell all them rapey murdering messicans from Panama to go the hell home since he’s one of them.

  • Relativicus

If yelling at the problem doesn’t help, how does Santilli expect McCain to help?

  • Bitter Scribe

Why doesn’t this Santili just invite homeless vets to live in HIS office or radio studio or wherever he thinks up this shit?

    • Villago Delenda Est

Because the homeless vets would probably suggest that raising Santili’s taxes might be a way to finance some regular space for the homeless vets.

  • beatbort

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
Consider this our “thank you” for foisting Sarah Palin on America, Mr. Maverick.

  • VandeGraf

The truth about Sandy Hook is that there is not much truth about Sandy Hook. All the details are subjective.

    • Villago Delenda Est

Well, yes, from a certain point of view…

      • bobbert

        An uncertain point of view.

  • VandeGraf

A rally is being organized to Detain Pete Santilli. On a (alleged) day in November all the space shuttles are going to converge on his house to disrupt the mail and paper deliveries. That’ll teach the whippersnapper.

    • Toomush_Infer

Will the popcorn be inside the house?…

    • HeywoodJablomey

Right? I often wonder if these crazy fuckers thank their lucky stars daily that they live in the USA, where they are free to rage away. In print and on the airwaves, no less.
As one of my Aunties used to say, “Rave on, cat shit- someone’ll come along and cover you up.”

  • Paperless Tiger

As opposition leader, McCain is the perfect agent to serve as liason with people the President and his administration can’t afford to meet with, like fascists in Ukraine and terrorists in Syria. Did you really think he had gone rogue?

  • UnsaltedSinner

Sounds like great news for John McCain.

  • HeywoodJablomey

John to Cindy: “We’re gonna need a bigger house.”

  • Jen_Baker_VA

I wonder if Santilli ever served.

    • doktorzoom

He was allegedly in the Marines. Whether USMC or Space Marines, I’m not sure.

      • Bath tub navy with his rubber duckies?

      • grmpy

Perhaps the stolen valor folks should be notified

  • GDleftyPart2

Sorry Wonkette, we have so many Operation Rolling Dunderheads here in sunny AZ, we number them.
ORD # 8952 is under way!!!!

  • Villago Delenda Est

The POW/MIA thing was another of the lies perpetrated by the criminal Nixon. The vile dogshit of the right embraced it then and embrace it now.

  • McCain is up for re-election. Vote Ann Kirkpatrick!

  • DelDryden

Fortunately for Senator McCain, grammar is on his side! Because I don’t think this means what the angry wingnuts think it means:

“unless Senator McCain doesn’t immediately alleviate their homelessness…”

  • kaw143

Wow, McCain certainly has been a very busy man, hasn’t he? Up until now, I hadn’t realized he had, well, done much of anything in the last 30 years.

    • grmpy

He was in on that savings and loan scandal in the late 80s with Cheney, where they stole a bunch of money. So… There’s that.

  • whitroth

Fortunately for the vets, Bernie, who’s on that committee, has been working to help them…. and the VFW, I think, showed its appreciation….

mark “now, who should I vote for in the primaries…?”

  • fka_donnie_d

Operation “bnecause you are insufficiently batshit we will find a scandal to smear you with or die trying”

    /fify yw

  • Tony Mac

All I can say that McCain is a wacko. He’s NO military for foreign affairs expert,
All McCain really is is a self centered, old, dangerous warmongering madman.
Let have everybody work together and boot McCain into his long overdue retirement

  • John Smith

I wonder if Santilli (rhymes with silly) served in the military at all, or if he’s another Republican armchair hawk.

  • Manhattan123

I don’t know about his blame for the VA stuff, but he should be arrested, tried and convicted for foisting Sarah Palin and her snowbilly family on the rest of us.

  • hvdv

Are we to feel bad for McCain now? That’s awkward.

  • Bob Harrow

Yes they eat their own.. gotta laugh

  • mirele

I was checking the Twitter machine to find out why a helicopter was buzzing my Mesa, Arizona neighborhood and well, nothing, but this did pop up. McCain paid a visit to the Mesa City Council today:

    https://twitter.com/SenJohnMcCain/status/639137236735426560

Will that be enough to put off Pete Santilli’s caravan? We will see…
