Two more beneficiaries of unrestricted access to firearms
Two more beneficiaries of unrestricted access to firearms

A Virginia TV reporter and cameraman were shot dead on live TV while reporting in Moneta, Virginia, Wednesday morning, and it is definitely too soon to suggest that maybe all the guns floating around the nation are in any way a bad idea, because that would be ghoulish. Not nearly as ghoulish as the fact that WDBJ reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, were murdered during a fluff interview about tourism with Vicki Gardner, a Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman, at a shopping center, but pretty ghoulish, so let’s not talk about guns, OK? Gardner was injured and is in surgery.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said on a local radio program that a “disgruntled employee” was responsible for the shooting, and that the suspect’s arrest is imminent.

Ward was engaged to marry the station’s morning producer, Melissa Ott, who was at the TV station and preparing for a party following the completion of her final show before leaving WDBJ. She was reportedly in the station’s control room and witnessed the shooting as it happened. Parker was also engaged, to fellow WDJB reporter Chris Hurst:

It’s clearly too soon to talk about guns, but obviously in Virginia, where guns are so hard to come by, and where some members of the legislature don’t even want to take guns away from domestic abusers, the inevitable response to such incidents will be more guns. Perhaps reporters should be required to carry them, just in case. After all, it’s the Second Amendment that makes the First Amendment possible, or something like that.

You can go find the video of the shooting if you want; we’re not touching that. WDJB7 meteorologist Brent Watts retweeted this photo, asking that instead of screengrabs of the shooter, the best way to respond is to remember that Alison Parker and Adam Ward were journalists who loved their jobs:

brent watts tweet

Also, let’s have a respectful period of not talking about guns. Perhaps we can talk about guns after the next horrific shooting. Or the one after that. Or how about never? Does never work for you?

  • AntiDerpomeme

Too depressing for snark. Sorry for unnecessary loss of more lives in yet another instance of where we could have done better.

  • TeenLaQueefa

    Unreal.

Where was the good reporter with a gun?

  • nowhereman

Well, we shouldn’t talk about it before the next horrific killing, during any horrific killing or just after any horrific killing–so yeah, that would be never. We don’t want to hurt the fee fees or sensibilities of those oppressed gunnuts and ammosexuals out there.

I remember when Sandy Hook changed me.

Columbine changed me. Virginia Tech just reinforced it.

Yes- and we had the DC snipers

      • cmd

The cameraman graduated from Virginia Tech.

  • Reddishrabbit

I believe there will be a time when we can talk about guns in the USA. I figure right as the sun dies will be finally time to adress it.

  • Spotts1701

The audio was chilling. They were doing their job, and they got shot. They weren’t in a war zone, or a disaster area. They were talking about tourism for God’s sake! Since when should someone doing a fluff-piece standup be worried they’re going to catch a bullet?

    • marxalot

Seems like the wingnuts have succeeded in creating the warzone they claim they need guns to protect themselves from.

      • Relativicus

        Problem solved!

I see Adam Ward wears a hoodie.

    I’m just sayin!

  • Mavenmaven

Of course, the argument will be that all camera crews should be heavily armed, and some freaks in flag costumes will start “guarding” TV stations, etc etc

    • jmk

My guess is that those superduperduperpatriots won’t bother to try to guard members of the librul media, but that there will be much hyuck-hyucking about gun-free-zones.

  • Jus_Wonderin

Fuck, this will never stop. Never. Fuck it!!

  • Relativicus

I’m thinking arming camera persons is pointless since their hands are busy, so I’m calling for a constitutional amendment requiring all cameras be developed to handle at least a full 17-round clip of 9mm ammo.

  • This one hit close to home. WDJB is one of the TV stations I grew up with and Moneta is about an hour’s drive from where my mother lives now.

Of course, that makes me wonder, by this point, how many people have had a deadly shooting that was close to where they currently live or where they spent a significant portion of their lives.

    • JohnR

In 2001 2 people were shot and killed less than 100 ft from my apartment. A gang related dispute turned into a foot chase through a shopping center into the complex I lived in. I was watching a Cubs game and heard pop, pop, pop… new it was gunfire called 911, made sure the door was locked.

    • andreamd

The first DC sniper shooting was near my son’s HS outside a supermarket. One was near a mall I shopped at a lot. The killers worked out at the Y near me. A man and his daughter were murdered by a stranger 5 blocks from my house. He knocked on their door and shot them. I live in an upper middle class area of Maryland

    • say wha

      AOT, K, AOT.

    • dshwa

I live near where one of our country’s mass shootings happened. I work in the local hospital, and was there the day of the shooting. One of the victims was one of my coworker’s moms.

Nothing’s changed since then. Not one less goddamn gun, not one more penny to mental health services, the poor, or any honest discussion of any of the causes in our media, government, or society in general of why these shootings keep on occurring. I was depressed for a while, then angry, and now I’ve just hit acceptance. We’re not going to change. This is who we are, and who we want to be, or at least who enough of us want us to be. We’re an angry, stressed out society filled with a majority of people living on the edge of financial catastrophe and who thinks aggression is a reasonable solution to any problem, and who have been handed a list of who’s to blame for it containing everyone but the actual culprits. This is why Trump’s winning, because he is better a distillation of America than anyone else out there. This is who we are America. Mass shooters and loud mouth angry assholes.

    • SpideySenser

Spidey Jr. attends college in Hartford, about an hour from Newtown. Not very close, but I live in MA and it was so weird because it always seems those atrocities happen “somewhere else”, like TX or AL or AZ. Feels right next door when you live in the “small” states.

    • Whale Chowder

      How close is close?

Back in the late ’80s I had occasion to visit LA on a few business trips. What was striking to me was the daily litany of shootings on the morning news; I vowed I would never live in a place where someone got shot every. fucking. day.

Fast-forward to today. I live in Seattle now and guess what: the morning news has a story about a shooting in the greater Seattle Metro area nearly every. fucking. day. You can’t escape it, several shootings have occurred in the last couple of years within let’s say two miles of my house. I have friends who live in neighbourhoods where drive-bys and gang attacks are a weekly event.

There’s no escaping it as far as I can tell, anywhere in America.

obDickJoke: Trump has a caterpillar on his head! Wonder if he has a similar parasite in his groinal area?

    • LIT_Fag

I live about 6 blocks from where the two military guys were gunned down at the recruiting center a couple years back in Little Rock.

  • Me not sure

I clearly remember watching a man get shot dead on live television the first time it ever happened and
thinking it horrible. Now it seems almost commonplace. That man was Lee Harvey Oswald.

Someone said, post-Sandyhook, the argument was over. If we were willing to accept Sandyhook, we’re willing to accept any gun violence as the cost of Freedumbz.

      • Viva La Tabula Raza

I think if they had shown video from inside the school after the shooting, things might have ended up a little differently. But the liberal gun-hating media…

      • Takoma DC

I know. I was so stupid after Sandyhook. I really believed Obama was going to opt for an executive order since Congress is not “unable” to change/create sensible gun laws. But will not because they’re in NRA and gun/ammo manufacturer’s pockets OR pussies too afraid of constituent backlash. Fuck this evil country. So sorry for Alison and Chris. Condolences to their family, friends, and colleagues. This atheist hopes she’s wrong and the Buddhists are right. Reincarnation but this time you’re born in UK, EU, Asia, Canada (civilized nations) and live long wonderful lives.

  • Spotts1701

  • Ilgattomorte

The problem isn’t guns, it’s disgruntled employees. If the government would just do something to identify the disgruntled employees, racists, clumsy people, terrorists, mentally unstable and the people who shove guns in their boobs, we wouldn’t have to be talking about guns.

After all, we just have to enforce the gun laws that we already have. Besides, guns don’t kill people, people kill people and those people could use a knife instead. The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with even more guns. Plus, a gun in the hand is worth two in the bush, unless the two in the bush have bigger clips, then toss the gun in your hand because a rolling gun gathers no moss, because that is how you protect the first amendment.

The important thing is to recognize is this: We shouldn’t talk about guns, because we aren’t going to solve this problem with a bunch of empty platitudes.

    • TheBidenator

That’s some might fine world salad you just whipped together…worthy of NRA news, even.

      • Angry_Cop

Parts of it make sense and nowhere are Clinton, Pelosi, or Ted Kennedy (yeah, they’re still flogging his corpse) mentioned, so no, it would not make the grade as an NRA newsletter, which thankfully they finally stopped sending me after I sent back all their previous letters in their pre-paid envelope with the words “I’M A DEMOCRAT” written in large block letters on the back.

        • TheBidenator

Well so is single health care and we still don’t even have that yet, either. There’s a lot of no-brainer stuff the US can’t have. Hell, we can’t even get the gun nuts to agree to support single payer health care to take care of the victims of their fetish….

          • Takoma DC

It’s because of greed that the average citizen doesn’t have these basic things. Our “brave” leaders only believe in their own pursuit-of-happiness. We’re just marionettes for them to toy with until death by over-work, or murdered by gun nut or knife wielding psychopath.

        • Takoma DC

Our officials have been paid for by NRA and gun mfrs. There’s also the GOP’s desire of a race war. They’ve been angry since FDR’s New Deal and Civil Rights Act. You know the best things America has managed to accomplish they wish to dismantle. So they divide and conquer through incendiary and blatantly racist language, destruction of public education, destruction of labor unions, militarization of police in poor areas, loose gun laws, inadequate mental healthcare, obliterate voting rights act, rule in favor of corporations to push us into oligarchy, and all the while promoting violence any way possible.

    • TheBidenator

Yeah but does your government have the most powerful military in the world just in case you want to use your pea shooter to overthrow it? I didn’t think so….

  • Takoma DC

Oh Virginia! Now I know why your gun “laws” allow firearms inside Starbuck’s, shopping malls, and bars. You just never know what this great Democratic “Experiment” we call America will reveal to us on any given day.

  • Angry_Cop

Do yourselves a favor and don’t watch the footage.

    • r m reddicks

I’d disagree. I think everyone should see the footage. Then deal with your emotions. Then deal with what you think can be done. Sanitizing doesn’t get the the why of things.

      • sw19womble

It’s not graphic – in the way that congressman blew his brains out. It is shocking – in the mundane suddenness of it. I agree, deal with it, and confront just how _easy_ it is to walk up to someone and shoot them.
That’s why gun regulation is so important.

      • There’s a very remote possibility that white folks watching two people who are not blahs getting slaughtered on live tv might actually move them do something about gun control. Or not. Probably not.

        • r m reddicks

Indeed. Watching the fellow getting shot in the back by that cop (somewhere, anywhere!) hasn’t affected white folks all that much. Shootings often look like nothing. But the sound of fear and pain is visceral. (I’m mixing reply twixt you and sw19womble on this.)

I totally just upvoted you thanking me, which is lame, but I do not wanna take away your upvote so I am leaving it there
Here variety to make up for it

          • sw19womble

            It’s okay, I thought you were upvoting happy-smiley-kitten. :)

(pic of Mrs Eva-Siggy von Kitler to round off – plus assorted wombles and bjds)

          • HeywoodJablomey

I caught a stray in a no-fail cat trap a couple of months ago. His name is PITA

Also, too: I’ve wondered if your name had to do with the Wombles of Wimbledon! Now I know : ) Loved that show when I was a wee lassie.

          • OneDemin EOr

Thanks from me, too. Love the kittehs and other babies!

          • Steverino247

Your kitten is a one-eyed sex maniac?

          • sw19womble

            ..

          • Jen_Baker_VA

Kittens make it better. Look at that puddin face

          • Yes, many many many more kitties!

          • My kitty, Callibeth-Sophia Hussein D. Katze!

          • Querolous

Is that a piccolo french horn or a really big cat?

          • She’s a small cat, and yes, that is a piccolo horn!

          • Gleem-McShinez

Standing on kittens?! DO NOT EMULATE THE PALINS

          • Blank Ron

Don’t have any kitten pics to hand. Will you settle for a rattie pic?

          • My platform would be very similar to Bernie’s, except for this. Bernie’s only flaw is that, because he lives in a state in which hunting is a big industry, represents his particular constituents by voting against some gun control. Can’t blame him because he’s doing his job as senator, but I hope for his presidential run he re-thinks that.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

Plus your name already has heat in it, so you can totes steal the feel the burn thing

Hm, Feel the Heat? Could be your campaign song

          • Oh, it has more than ‘heat’ in it–my surname is ‘Heater’. Really, no kidding.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

….you need to tell me your parents named at least one of their kids Peter.
            PLEASE

          • No, but one of my uncles named his daughter Heather!

          • Jen_Baker_VA

            Sweet. Crazy Uncle FTW!

          • Steverino247

Hunters aren’t usually a problem. It’s the idiots with assault rifles and hand guns who buy into all the paranoia that are.

          • That’s true. I grew up around guns because EVERYONE in my family hunted.

          • Steverino247

When I was in the infantry, the hunters were the guys most aware of firearms safety, marksmanship (i.e., don’t expend all your ammo the first time you think you saw something), and a general sense of “don’t be stupid around weapons.”

        • marxalot

          Put it on your hat.

        • TheBidenator

          • I’d have buttons made up that say, “Ask me about my ZERO NRA rating!”

  • r m reddicks

I won’t tell you where to see it but you ought to see it. Because it’s us. Dumbasses need to know it’s not just Barbie and Ken dolls. And it’s ugly. At least to the non-sociopaths and non-psychopaths.

  • TheBidenator

It’s always too soon to talk about guns, even as we speak James Holmes was just given like 10,000 years for his mass shooting and then we get this multiple murder, too. It’s always too soon to talk about guns and when it’s finally not too soon there’s another incident like this and then it’s too soon again…the bodies from the last shooting never get cold so to speak because there’s a fresh truckload of dead mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters coming in daily to keep them warm. Some days this country makes me sick….

    • grmpy

That’s the idea. It’s always too soon after a shooting. If we were to actually have any time period of peace the NRA people would say “See? it’s working… nothing to talk about,” but because something tragic has happened it’s too soon.

  • marxalot

So, I’m actually going to try and quit drinking for good. Just limiting my intake isn’t good enough any more. This, and things like this, make that… challenging.

  • whatwhomever

    Freedom. Sure. Whatever.

  • diogenez

    Reality TV.

  • PirateCafe

    NRA, you built that.

  • arglebargle

Obviously we need the Oath Keepers protecting every news crew. That’s about all the snark I can manage in this story.

    • Jen_Baker_VA

At least they’d be doing something worthwhile.
In Baltimore, there were local reports that the gang bangers were doing just that- protecting the reporters from the cops. Some crazy world

    • toomanyrappers

What about the gun? We have to prioritize and protect the most important thing here. ;)

  • jjdaddyo

Welcome to the US of NRA.

  • grmpy

Can you imagine how that poor gun feels? Oh my gosh. it had hopes of “justice” and “safety” and now this!!111!!. That poor poor gun. It just wanted to protect someone and now this. such a tragic day.

    • Ambignostic

It just wanted to go target shooting for sport with SNS77!

      • grmpy

They always do. Won’t someone think of the GUNS?!1/

    • Michael Smith

That’s a good point. If I were a gun, I would prefer not to wind up in America.

    • Celtic_Gnome

And, since it killed, that gun will have to be put down.

      • grmpy

It never had a chance :(

  • Bill Slider

Of course guns, and easy access to them, played no role in these two murders. They were killed by those cakes we like.

    • sw19womble

Don’t forget the “sincerely-held belief” in shooting people who upset you.

  • AnOuthouse

Maybe NOW they’ll start issuing bullet proof vests and pith helmets to their reporters.

  • Tendernob

The suspect is a former WDBJ reporter who was disgruntled against the two victims, and posted his own video of the shooting on Facebook. WHAT THE EFF. http://dcist.com/2015/08/virginia_news_crew_fatally_shot_dur.php

    • Jen_Baker_VA

Welcome to the US of NRA (stolen, utterly, from a few posts below), where prevalent lore dictates that the best way to handle all your issues is to kill someone.

      • r m reddicks

If you’re of a mind to do some shooting to resolve your issues one shot ought to do it. It’ll take care of all your issues while visiting no more than can be expected on those around you. Dumb fucks shooting people for internalized reasoning is beyond me. One thing for sure; these dumb fucks don’t ever choose their targets well. Which could lead to another discussion.

        • Jen_Baker_VA

Only the good die young, eh? Or, get shot by horrid fuckweasels who think they need to take someone out before they die, for whatever fucking stupid reason.
I never got that one myself

    • Takoma DC

Reports here in DC is he’s a disgruntled ex-employee of VA governor McAuliffe

      • Jen_Baker_VA

Well, that is an interesting spin
The news round here, and they are ON it talking about him still having a faint pulse and all, is that he was a former worker at their station

        • Fitzgerald Chesterfield

The area where he shot himself is at least 45 minutes from the nearest hospital.

EDIT: latest report is he’s getting a helicopter ride to the hospital

          • Jen_Baker_VA

Yeah but you know how it is. You know they are hoping he will survive so they can lethel injection him proper.
Blargh. Richmond news is sickening. I swear to god the talking head was just smirking about him still having a pulse

          • Fitzgerald Chesterfield

            What channel are you watching?

          • Jen_Baker_VA

Think it was the ABC, blurgh. Usually I am ok with that one and the CBS but that smirk made me twitch
I could have imagined it though, feeling rather uppity as I am right now

        • sw19womble

Just ride him around for a bit, Cool Hand Luke style.

      • Tendernob

Erm, no, he’s been identified as Vester Lee Flanagan (aka “Bryce Williams”), a former anchor on the same station, not someone working for the governor. He also sent a 23-page fax to the TV station taking credit for the shooting.
        http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/vester-lee-flanagan-ii-named-suspect-live-tv-shootings-virginia-n416331

        • Takoma DC

I believe you. News here was wrong in several points. Also reported silver car with Williams/Flanagan being chased by LE were false. I think Williams used to anchor for DC major news affiliate. His ‘on air’ name sounds very familiar. I hope they apprehend him soon.

    • Spotts1701

You know what my job is? Dealing with disgruntled employees. I already don’t like them when they’re mad, now I gotta be worried they may haul off and shoot me? Or shoot someone else because they reported an incident to me?

      Damn…

  • jviscont1

tragic and sad 2 young lives extinguished needlessly. will have to await any new Josh Duggar reporting in today’s news cycle before I can muster any snark.

    • dshwa

I’m not sure even that vile asshole could rouse any more snark out of me today. I think I’m going to binge watch Mr. Robot or look at the clouds for a while.

  • TheBidenator

It’s national dog day, people if we’re going to get some cute images to take the edge off this tragedy use some puppies at least….

    • Jen_Baker_VA
    • r m reddicks

      There are some kitties below.

    • Takoma DC

Adopt a dog who needs a home. Focusing on unconditional love and happiness and joy for all creatures. Pets also have positive affect on stress and PTSD patients. I think a lot of us living in U.S. are feeling symptoms like PTSD and aren’t even aware. (not to mention, shame, revulsion, depression, anger etc…)

      • Msmlg1979

So true! I have one adopted dog and one found dog, and no matter how bad I am feeling, one look at their sweet, loving faces lifts me up. Knowing they are counting on me keeps me going when things are at their worst!

        • Jen_Baker_VA

We rent, but we have neighbor dogs to fill the void of the no dogs allowed dogma. Neighbor dogs are even better because they come and give love and I don’t have to feed them
(though mind, I do keep a box of dog biscuits on hand)

        • Takoma DC

That’s great. I think what you say is very true. Pets, children and nature offer peace, love, and joy. Take care.

      • TheBidenator

        I’m working on it….

        • Takoma DC

          :-)

      • mrpuma2u

I adopted my obnoxious, ungrateful cur of a mongrel from my local county animal shelter. In truth, he is fairly sweet (most of the time) and the only things he destroys regularly is quiet.

    • Thaumaturgist

      Bad dog.

    • A Doggy!

  • toughsister

What will it take for people to rise up and DEMAND the REPEAL of the murderous second amendment?

    • Angry_Cop

75% of the state legislatures must vote in favor to approve/repeal an amendment to the Constitution. I do not see a Second Amendment repeal ever succeeding in this nation, not in my lifetime, anyway, not with those numbers.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

They do not need to repeal it. They simply have to enforce the actual friggin thing, and not this “anything goes” BS that we have now

        • Thaumaturgist

Yes, they have to repeal or amend it. The U.S. Supreme Court has made legislation to enforce the amendment unconstitutional.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

Hm, let us repeal that legislation then, maybe. The original, as it stands, is not such a bad idea. People ought to be able to defend themselves or, better, defend the country in case of invasion (Actual invasion like in red dawn, not invasion like in too many messicans)

I think the entire problem is when too many people mistake their gun for having a 9 inch schlong

          • Thaumaturgist

It’s not legislation, i.e., it’s not something passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the president. According to the current majority on the US Supreme Court, the rule is constitutional. You would have to repeal or amend the second amendment to the US Constitution, unless, of course, you can get a future Supreme Court majority to over rule the current case law. None of this is easy.

          • Angry_Cop

The Supreme Court cannot make legislation. The Supreme Court ruled that individual ownership was the original intent, and that the “well-regulated militia” part was window dressing. So you need a new Supreme Court and a new test case. Fuck this stupid country.

          • jmk

It’s a toss-up whether to call for the impeachment of those assholes based on their decision in Heller or their decision in Citizens United, but oooh, look… it’s the same assholes each time.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

Guns are people with rights that must be protected, corporations are people with rights that must be protected, religions are people with rights that must be protected
but ew gay (except for Kennedy, who decided to be on the good guy side)
That buncha unelected lawyers would not know justice if it hit them with a cold dead fish

          • jmk

I would certainly be willing to put that to the test, for science!

Heck, I’ll even take one for the team and use my own money to obtain a dead fish – or several dead fish – and travel to Washington, DC so that I could test just how long I would have to hit these guys repeatedly with said fish before they’d begin to understand the concept of justice.

Sounds like a well-designed experiment to me.

          • Angry_Cop

            what a coincidence

          • jmk

            Isn’t it? Funny about that…

          • marxalot

I think that comment was meant to be read “Supreme Court has caused enforcement legislation to be” rather than “has made laws.”

    • Drew Miner

Either that, or you know, we could like form a well ordered militia, with background checks, and mental history review, and only let those guys have guns.

      • Angry_Cop

Heller v. DC took care of that “well-ordered militia” clause for you. No longer operative.

        • cmb

Credit should be heaped on the people who most deserve it.

The Opinion of the Court, delivered by Justice Scalia, was joined by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. and by Justices Anthony M. Kennedy, Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr.

Then upon the craven Senators who voted for these miscreants.

P.S. And I still blame OHJB for Uncle Clarence Thomas soiling Thurgood Marshall’s seat on the SCOTUS.

          • jmk

            He wasn’t alone…

          • cmb

You’re right, of course, but he was the head of the Judiciary Committee and he controlled the Anita Hill hearings. He decided to cut those hearings short and only accept affidavits for the record from other women corroborating Thomas’ history of sexual harassment.

        • Gleem-McShinez

Cue wingnut cries of “UNELECTED JUDGES! JUDICIAL ACTIVISM!!”

Oh, right, that only applies to decisions wingnuts don’t agree with.

      • Takoma DC

Yes! “Well ordered militia” THIS is NOT and never has been in my lifetime.

  • Thaumaturgist

Trump’s attacks on Megyn and Jorge Ramos got the news media on board. I’d like to think this could get the media concerned about guns.

  • Blueb4sunrise
  • Lascauxcaveman

There’s so much violence on TV these days. :(

  • Ambignostic

Why are you people blaming guns? Shouldn’t we be finding a way to blame the victims instead?

    • dshwa

The victims are white, so the proper procedure is to blame the shooter’s absent father and embracing of thug culture.

    • Ryan Denniston

That’s what happens when you neglect your agile skill and throw your spare points into charisma.

      • marxalot

        Sorcerer libel!!1!

    • mrpuma2u

It’s uh, the reporters fault for not wearing these, not guns. Nosirree

    • Angry_Cop

The asshole who shot them apparently did quite a bit of that.

  • Ryan Denniston

Damn, and we were a half hour away from it not being Too Soon. Someone reset the shot clock to 24 hours.

  • Incoming Ham

The racists discovered now they can finally use the # whitelivesmatter hashtag they made. It’s so HI-LARE-E-US! What clever dicks they are.

  • Takoma DC

This is not a “well regulated militia” as U.S. constitution mandates.

RIP Alison and Adam. You both deserved far better.

  • Bill Slider

Will all 16 candidates for the Republican nomination for President be issuing a joint press release, drafted by the NRA, about this ugly incident?

    • dshwa

I’m pretty sure NRA apologist speech writer is a mandatory position in any Repug candidate’s staff.

      • Wombat

Why hire someone when you can get the points straight from the NRA for free?

    • Jen_Baker_VA

Naw, they will do their own version of the scripted NRA memo
It will all sound, of course very similar.
Bens will be all “At such a tragic time, let us pray….”
Carly will be all “It is too soon to talk, let us not politicize…”
iJeb! will be all “Knowing what I know now, I think that maybe crazy people should not have guns,” and then a few minutes later he will claim he meant we should pray and not politicize this
And Trump, of course, will be “Fucking looser couldn’t even kill himself right.”

  • workfaster

I’m so sick of 2nd Amendment Terrorists.

    • TYPE O NEGATIVE

Plenty of gun free countries to choose from, see ya

      • dshwa

Time to add one more to the list. This one. Because it’s my county too, and you have no more legitimate claim to it than I do, and are no more of a patriot for it than I am.

  • TheBidenator

You know the interesting thing is gun nuts can’t even claim that if that lady reporter or the cameraman was armed then this could have been prevented because the shooter blindsided everyone. By the time anyone knew what was going on the lady reporter was dead and the cameraman had just one moment to take a still of the assailant so shove THAT propaganda up your asses, gunsturbators….

    • dshwa

I hope the video evidence from this finally puts lie to that argument. Because it’s about the only good that can come from this.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

They will STILL claim if one of them had a gun they could have stopped him. Evidence and fact means nothing to those people

        • dshwa

sigh. you’re right, I’m afraid. it was a nice dream while it lasted.

        • grmpy

Bystanders with guns would have shot him. JUSTICE. Yup.

          • dshwa

And then in the confusion, probably each other.

      • Takoma DC

You really believe facts, logic, video evidence, and eye-witness testimony can persuade tea party freaks and gop-gun-nuts?

        • dshwa

Not really. But I can hope it gets enough of the rest of the country that’s still sitting on the fence off their ass to do something about it.

    • Ambignostic

I imagine the primary effect of this will be to make news crews much more uncomfortable and paranoid. Local news crews are very thinly staffed; they don’t have the resources to keep somebody around every location shoot for security purposes.

  • Steverino247

What? No false flag bullshit yet?

    • proudgrampa

      Oh, give it time.

    • Jen_Baker_VA

      Wait about 3 more hours.
The other day, when that cop was killed on the road, I witnessed one poster posting that it was too soon yeadda yadda, time to pray and then when the officer was pronounced dead, came back to say that he had a friend who talked to a nurse who knows a guy who said it never happened

    • Ambignostic

I’ll go check infowars so you don’t have to

      • Ambignostic

How about that, infowars uses Disqus too

        • Jen_Baker_VA

You should see how long it takes to get you banned

        • Celtic_Gnome

SilentPatriot considers himself an expert on the matter of being shot because of his vast experience watching it on teevee and in the movies.

      • Steverino247

Taking one for the species, eh?

    • Takoma DC

Actually yes but not for this event. I should have known when driving to work today, just as I crossed Memorial Bridge into Arlington, a pick up truck with gigantic slabs of plywood sheeting surrounding the truck bed, advertising false flag fucktard propaganda about Fort Hood! I should have known the day was going to get much worse.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

Wait wait, Fort Hood was supposed to be mooslim terrorists that Obama and the Military, for whatever reason, decided not to declare terrorism
How can it be also a false flag?

        • Takoma DC

You’re correct. I really don’t know know his “logic”. I also don’t know why it’s legal for these seriously insane people to deck their vehicle with huge sheets if plywood and what looked like household water pipes as a make-shift frame to support the plywood signs. How is that safe for others sharing the road with this jerk off? He looked to be in his 60’s, white, VA license plates…..no big surprises there.

    • Anarchy Pony

Alex Jones actually violates the speed of light with the speed he declares incidents false flags.

      • Steverino247

And presents new challenges to a certain part of the pharmaceutical research community.

    • jmk

They might still be coming down off of the high of the “false flag” claims about the French train incident – the proof of which (and my god, I wish I was kidding) was that the British man, when describing what happened in an interview, said the name Alek, which international wingnuts were claiming was the “real” name of the “actor” who “played” the gunman.

They seemed strangely resistant to the fact that Alek is the name of one of the American kids.

      • Steverino247

The false flag morons are obviously living a miracle, because they’re actually too stupid to breathe on their own.

  • vivian

    1) It is the first job of our elected government to protect us. We do have the right to demand they do better at protecting our safety, in this case, from gun nuts.

    • Blank Ron

How did things get to the point where owning a firearm, even if one is incompetent or dangerous, gets to trump the right to LIFE?

  • toughsister

No “well-organized militia” bullshit, no background checks crap. Just repeal the f***ing amendment. Too many lives have been sacrificed to it.

    • timpundit

I’m there too. Fuck the second amendment, it’s been abused enough.

    • It’s archaic and not well-written.

    • Takoma DC

  • spends2much

My first instinct was that it was barbarous to want to watch it, then I thought, no, this HAPPENS, and we can’t stick our heads in the sand. We should all be made uncomfortable and physically sick by seeing what gun violence really is. If not, nothing will ever change.

    And something has to change.

    • Jen_Baker_VA

This is very true. But I still can’t. I don’t have to see someone die to know it’s fucked up that they did.

      • r m reddicks

I think it’s important to see and hear the fear. What we believe internally is one thing. The empathy with the fear and the horror of someone else is deserving of knowing and bearing. The video clip brings that home in a near to maddened way. Probably should be played at all concealed carry classes and be demanded viewing for every gun permit.

        • Takoma DC

Maybe for you. I’ve been nauseous all day. Hubby watched it while I drove. I just heard her screams. Literally felt like my heart was being torn. I cannot imagine the suffering of her family, bf, and friends. Very sad for Alison, Adam, and other victims of beyond senseless gun violence.

    • timpundit

After Sandy Hook, I need to watch nothing involving gun massacres, nothing will compare to that sickness, thanks.

    • dshwa

I’m going to pass, but I’ve seen gunshot victims up close and personal before, so I don’t need to. I already have a damn good idea of the horror of it all.

      • Takoma DC

Don’t watch it. It’s terrifying enough hearing Alison’s screams.Your imagination serves well enough.

        • dshwa

I’d like to make every non-cop, healthcare worker, and EMT watch it though. Maybe that would slap some sense into the gun fetishists.

Although to be fair, I know a few from the above who are still gun fetishists, so maybe it won’t.

          • r m reddicks

I wouldn’t leave out the cops. Especially would-be cops.

          • Takoma DC

Yes if they were normal healthy-minded people. The GOP bullied our Surgeon General into removing any “crazy” talk that gun violence is a societal health issue. That’s what kind of magical thinking fantasy land some of these assholes inhabit. The others know our gun laws should be changed but they want gun violence because it serves to charge their base. Violence also (especially black on white) is a powerful divider.

          • Celtic_Gnome

The NRA is just the lobbying arm of the gun and ammo manufacturers, and all these bodies are just necessary collateral damage for the bottom line. Go ahead, try to carry a gun into NRA headquarters.

          • bozilingus

Making others watch the video will not help. These are people so desensitized to the human condition that they would see it as just another TV drama, with no impact on their lives.

    • TYPE O NEGATIVE

You wanna watch car crash videos too?

I’ve got some violent ones. It’s not going to stop you from driving

Ah the old false equivalency stand by. Got anything else, slick?

        • sw19womble

Boring troll is boring. And probably about 12 years old, mentally, if not physically.

          • dshwa

I’ve almost got Bingo though: False equivalency, sheep, projection, lack of empathy. Just missing threats.

          • marxalot

            Give him time.

    • Celtic_Gnome

Bill Burr did a standup in Atlanta where he put a group of guys in their place who were disparaging because Burr only owns a .22. People who’ve never fired a gun outside a range with ear protection don’t realize that, with that first shot at the 4:00 AM intruder, the 9 mm or .45 penis extender effectively leaves you blind and deaf in the dark.

  • dshwa

We need him for this and he’s gone, so here’s his best moment ever, from the last time we had one. Because it is still better than anything the actual media will do.

          • Blank Ron

It’s only been a few minutes.

I was missing Threats for a complete O column.

  • r m reddicks

as a warning: This post is not really that far off topic.

Took a visit to notsobrightbart to view some comments. The sex lives of the victims seems to be the (dys)functional thought and primary thread. (I could only put up with a couple of pages.) The impossible to read drudge site just goes to CNN from what I could figure. Just taking a visit to those two pages cemented the fact that the right is insane. You’d have to be insane to navigate your way through that crap.

    • Tendernob

Here’s a tiny sampling. I didn’t see any sex-based comments (like you, I could only put up with the first 2 pages); instead, I saw this:

That’s it!.. Me and the boys are breaking out the sheets tonight.

He was an ugly @^$ chimp that could not control his emotions.

      Total separation. Now!

      • Jen_Baker_VA

Total separation? I can go with separating the sane people from the gun humpers. That is what they meant, right?

        • Angry_Cop

erm, no, probably they had something more lynchy in mind.

      • sw19womble

I think it’s clear who the ‘sub-humans’ are in this argument.

    • Jen_Baker_VA

You know, maybe that awfulness will snap some of their listeners out of their pro-guns everywhere mindset.

        • Anarchy Pony

          I admire your optimism.

          • dshwa

I’m trying. But having witnessed first hand how little a mass shooting in my town did to change the prevailing opinion, it’s not much optimism.

300 million people in this country .

People died in car accidents, pit bull attacks etc this morning.

You can’t prevent life or death

    • dshwa

Bullshit. We put seatbelts in cars, and made using them mandatory. You can’t prevent people dying eventually, but you sure as hell can change how they die.

    • SnarkOff

Fuck you. You can absolutely cut down on deaths at the hands of mentally ill people with access to guns by NOT ALLOWING MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE ACCESS TO GUNS.

    • sw19womble

Car safety regulations, seat belts, muzzling dangerous dogs,… fines and prosecution for lax regulation….. you see a thread? Care to follow it to its logical conclusion…?

True. Our new dullish troll can serve a purpose painting the gutter red.

    • Gleem-McShinez

Funny thing about civilization, we actually care about our fellow folks, and try our best to keep senseless deaths from happening.

You seem to be at odds with that idea.

      • Celtic_Gnome

Remember, conservatards are taught that empathy is a sign of weakness.

    • Angry_Cop

Looks like we also can’t prevent defective parents from raising a monster child that posts, after two people die needlessly, a smarmy comment on how “shit happens” and we should just shut up and deal.

Oh wait, we totally could! Take away the asshole child’s access to the internet and he can’t publicly prove how stupid he is anymore!

Hmm, seeing a solution to the gun problem here.

    • VandeGraf

Actually, it is technologically feasible to prevent life, at least on this planet. But it’s unreasonable and very, very unlikely. It is impossible to prevent death without preventing life. So, it is is possible to prevent death, but it’s unreasonable. very, very unlikely, and so largely a meaningless, moot point. Sort of like your comment.

      • VandeGraf

Moot AND meaningless? Is that a thing?

It is now. And where’s the banhammer, tedious troll is tedious.

        • Takoma DC

    • r m reddicks

People prevent life on a regular basis. Try revisiting you sex-ed class. You can’t prevent death but you sure as hell don’t have to go around getting yourself shot to prove it.

      • Biel_ze_Bubba

Death at the hands of a deranged, angry man armed with a loaded gun? I’m thinking that, you know, maybe that can be prevented. Lots of Australians are alive today, who died in an alternative universe.

    • TheBidenator

Oh here we go, THIS is why I kept the thread open…okay gun nut, we can’t prevent life or death and yes in the Sylvia Plath metaphorical sense we all will die but we can severely affect the probability of dying in a violent, untimely fashion by getting rid of these guns. There are so many holes in your claim I’m sure you didn’t think it through…literally cradle to grave sized holes so I’ll give you a chance to stop masturbating to pictures of your .45 and try again. • Joshua Norton

The greatest trick the NRA ever pulled was convincing America there’s no
lessons to be learned from countries with low rates of gun violence.

    • sw19womble

… and poof, just like that, another human being’s gone.

    • Takoma DC

How did they accomplish that? I truly would like to know.

      • dshwa

The same way it’s always been done: Fear.

        • Bitter Scribe

Plus our general disdain for other countries. If they’re so great how come they’re not America, huh?

          • dshwa

That’s fear as well. Fear that we’re not the best so we bash them rather than do an actual comparison and see if it’s true that we’re better, because we’re afraid it’s not

          • Villago Delenda Est

This drives me nucking futz. Then again, I’ve actually traveled and lived outside the confines of the USA.

          • Celtic_Gnome

And that is one of the biggest problems. The more passionate a defender of Our Way of Life a person is, the less likely it is that they don’t have a passport.

        • Takoma DC

I need more than that. I know fear is always the GOP base note. But to dismiss stats of other countries when compared to U.S. fear alone wouldn’t be convincing enough.

          • dshwa

I talked about how a few replies down. I’ll expand upon it a bit more. Their ego involves in part their American identity. If America is not great, then they’re not great, which they secretly fear is true. They’re not aware of that fear, but it colors their actions, screens out their reception to facts, makes them lash out at those who challenge their belies. They won’t look at facts about how America rates compared to the rest of the world because it challenges how they look at themselves. Ego is always a house of cards, and the fear of disturbing it is what drives people to act the way they do.

          • sw19womble

Spot on. Canada doesn’t see itself (or indeed sell itself) as the greatest democracy the world has ever seen. Nor does the UK or the EU, for that matter.
I think Canada is a wonderful country and comparable, with geography and age, with USA. You only have to look at Can/US gun crime statistics and realise there’s something weird at play in the American psyche.
It’s one of the main reasons why I chose to buy in Canada instead of the US. I enjoyed the somewhat modest, even-keel approach north of the border… .but a lot of people I know are attracted by the We Are The Best exceptionalism.
‘Horses for courses’ I suppose, but, also, caveat emptor.

          • Takoma DC

The brainwashing and narcissism and greed going on to your south is unparalleled except for instances in past history of national pride taken to extremes in their narcissistic-love-of-country fanatically expressed at the expense of millions of others. Leaders typically have funny mustaches, quirky caps, seizure like hand and arm gestures, extremely short hair, huge bulbous heads, love of beautiful young boys or girls, and Coca-Cola.

My husbandand I are moving to EU but have thought seriously about relocating to Vancouver. Very beautiful country you got going on up there. :-)

      • Ambignostic

Also a dash of American exceptionalism. And they’re right in a sense, that the USA is exceptional in this regard as it has a Constitutional right to bear arms. Those other countries don’t have that, so their solutions are not a perfect analogy, and therefore are dismissed as completely irrelevant.

        • Villago Delenda Est

Actually, other countries do. Honduras for example.

We need to be confronted with our OUTRAGE. People need to see that it’s not good guys with guns. Bunch of ^’s to you.

    • Steverino247

The video the shooter made is far worse. The asshole waited until the cameraman panned left to bring the two women into view after first aiming at the reporter. He wanted to kill them on the air.

    • Takoma DC

Obama changed laws enacted by Bush about soldier’s coffins. Personally, I disagree about private non-miltary citizens murdered by gun nut or tragic death by car or train accident. I don’t believe their gruesome images, screams, or blood splatter should be viewed by anyone except investigators and if necessary, inside a court of law. Just my opinion.

      • r m reddicks

Agreed to some degree. Let accidents be accidents. There’s no societal need to offer up such images. But this, like war, demands involvement. Be it gangbangers on the street or imperial troops on the march or the day to day death penalty of lay people or prisoners. No doubt the fear in the video will spark some sociopath but also the fear in the video give pause to some number of narcissists. Beyond that, people need to know what they’re glossing over.

    • SuspectedDemocrat

We don’t need another Budd Dwyer.

      • r m reddicks

It’s not the same thing, Suspect. That is something no one needs.

    • the_steamer

I am sorry to tell you but as the next Wonkette story demonstrates, this event is all about black on white crime, in the eyes of those that should be learning something from it. The video has been seen and has confirmed their bias against blahs. Guns remain innocent in their eyes.

    • CJTX

I think it’s a fascinating question. What percentage of gun fanatics have seen first hand a gun shot wound. It’s odd but it reminds me a lot of the fury over the violence in Quentin Tarantino’s movies. I read an essay saying more people where shot in Terminator 2 then in Reservoir Dogs. (you can infer how long ago this was). But people considered Reservoir Dogs more violent. This author postulated that it was because we saw Tim Roth bleeding and screaming in pain – i.e. the result of a gunshot wound. In movies like T2, the victim just falls down and we never see them again.

  • Markuserektus

At least the shooter adjudicated his own case.

            Single Shot Theory?

          • r m reddicks

It was further down. Something about public stocks and worn out lettuce.

        • Takoma DC

The shooter died. But they did try to save him at hospital in Roanoke, VA.

    • Takoma DC

He was apprehended alive. I’m sure his gun shot wound superficial. He’ll unfortunately survive and spend rest of his life in prison.

      • Ambignostic

        not unfortunate

        • Takoma DC

Perp is dead. I don’t think it “unfortunate”.

          • Villago Delenda Est

Well, it’s unfortunate in that we’ll never know what this guy was thinking when he did this, which will allow all sorts of speculation about what he was thinking, most of it based on preconceived notions.

I daresay he had some mental health issues and some impulse control problems. What was left of his sanity might have been appalled at what he just did.

But we’ll never know now. Just another couple of murders facilitated by the easy availability of firearms in this country.

          • Takoma DC

I don’t think we should give these criminals any more attention. They’re pathological and anything they say is not to be trusted mho.

          • Villago Delenda Est

A crime expert made the point, when asked by a media person about this sort of thing, that media saturation coverage of these incidents simply leads to more of them.

Naturally, the media proceeded to immediately ignore his advice.

          • Celtic_Gnome

It doesn’t matter what he was thinking. The media will develop their own storyline. Dylan Rooff all but said, “I’m going to kill me some n*****s to start a race war”, and everyone on the right described him as a mentally ill lone wolf whose motivation would probably never be known.

      • sw19womble

Maybe they can try to stem the bleeding with votes.

      • dshwa

Again, my preferred punishment is life without parole, to eventually have to live with what he did.

        • Takoma DC

I don’t think this perp will get parole. Like I said life in prison. I’m anti death penalty but totally fine when they kill themselves.

    etc.

    • Villago Delenda Est

The guy was blah! Not to early to talk about race war!

    • Takoma DC

We should apply a preemptive strategy. This means we will be forever discussing gun violence, the constitution, gun laws, mental health protocol, and the unwillingness of Congress to act – before the next shooting…
      and the next shooting…
      and the next shooting……..

It’s time to end this experiment in democracy. A do-over is over-due.

    • Ambignostic

My main resistance to a new Constitutional Convention (and there have been murmurs about having a state-level one here in Montana) is my bedrock faith that any Constitution drafted today could only be worse.

      • Villago Delenda Est

Yeah, that’s my chief concern as well. You just know that the forced birthers will want to impose their fuckedupedness on everyone, for example.

      • Takoma DC

I understand but that’s what they want you to fear. Sensible gun laws exist in all other “civilized” countries. Something like 27 little kids were murdered at Sandyhook elementary and nothing changed after that because Cwongress can’t get along. Boehner cries not for the senseless deaths of those kids, and their teachers but because he worked his way through college. Maybe it’s a female thing. I don’t even like watching violent movies. However, we should try out your experiment. For 3 days straight, make Congress watch and listen to videos of murders and images of heinous crime scenes. Their eyes pinned open with head phones on for 72 hours.

  • CJTX

I realize this is besides the huge point here, but some people in the industry don’t like being called a camera man. I never understood until I was one. The argument goes that camera man implies standing behind a camera and pointing it (like camera operators in a studio). Videographers, photographers, or photogs, are actually very skilled and experienced visual story tellers. They often, VERY often, will go cover a news story by themselves, shooting video, gathering info from officials, and conducting their own interviews. Camera man is the common phrase, I get it, but it’s a little disrespectful, especially to someone who died violently while doing this job. He was more than a “camera man”.

P.S. I’m going to see this in the weekly shit-fer-brains round up, aren’t I?

    • Takoma DC

Adam was referred to as “photo-journalist” and “producer” on coverage here in DC.

      • CJTX

Glad to hear. Was that on a TV broadcast? They know how to properly refer to one of their own. I mean, yeah the name thing may seem silly, but I think we all want to be referred to in a way that properly reflects our duties. Photo journalist is fine too, but to me that implies still photos like newspaper and magazines. But I won’t quibble with photojournalist.

P.S. After a little thought, I think photojournalist might be best, in the absence of the word “video journalist” – which is odd considering stations hire “Multimedia Journalists” these days.

        • Takoma DC

And online media outlet referred to Adam as a “multi-media journalist” as well. Not sure which sites. I’ll try to go through my search history to see if I can find those stories. But we had misinformation here too. Roanoke or other nearby media reported that police were in pursuit of a silver Chevy rental car, driver was the perpatrator – which was not true. Just after the first reports of the shooting, updated news info was that the perp was known and was a disgruntled ex-eomployee of VA governor McAuliffe. That was not correct either. Sad day. With many more to look forward to.

          • CJTX

Yeah, multi-media journalist is a common job posting these days, but that started after I left the business so I’m not sure what it really means. I think it sometimes refers to what we called “one-man” (“or one-woman”) bands. They go out by themselves – shoot the video, set up their own gear and record some kind of “from the scene” report, then go back and write the copy, edit it and “front it” on the newscast. Then write the web copy and post the video on the web. They might even do radio reports depending on any inter-media affiliations. I never envied those folks.

As for the misinformation, sigh, I know – it’s just the way things are in the modern media era. Reminds me a lot of the Boston bombing days. After the initial blast, there was all kinds of crazy shit being said on tv. And when the media started naming suspects that weren’t really suspects. And then when the police started closing in on those two asshole brothers. Crazy times we live in.

          • CJTX

I forgot to mention earlier, but this reply made think of the D.C. sniper days as well. All that business about white vans just made the D.C. area crazy – from what I gathered from the dispatches coming out of there.

    • Villago Delenda Est

Given that TV is primarily a visual medium, this cannot be stressed enough. The “talent” is just there to look good and provide some sound bites. The guy with the camera is an artist in his or her own right.

      • CJTX

I think that’s a great attitude toward the profession (not my own history though, I was a TERRIBLE videographer). But I wouldn’t necessarily agree re: the talent either…I guess I’m being argumentative today.

Just like with photogs, it depends on the experience of the person. I would have never attempted to be talent because a) I’m ugly, b) I don’t talk good. If you’ve ever seen one of those anchors/reporters get caught in a never-ending vortex of stuttering or forgetting their copy, you can see it. Some also have great skill at ad-libbing on air. But, seriously, they do spend a lot of time on their hair.

        • Villago Delenda Est

Given that “the talent” included people like Sarah Palin, I am a bit jaundiced about the on air people. Some of them do come across as intelligent humans, others, um, not so much. Like just about everyone on Faux, and a very healthy percentage of CNN’s talking heads. Like Leslie Blitzer and Don Lemon.

          • CJTX

Fair enough. Sarah Palin did have a background in news. I guess I just worked with some good people. So let me rephrase, doing the “talent” job WELL is a lot tougher than it looks. A lot of the stupidity you see on air, I think, has to do with how they’re trained coming up and the advice they’ve been given on what makes a good “on-air” person.

    • Thaumaturgist

who gets paid more? The talent or the one behind the camera?

      • CJTX

True, but that’s a whole different ball game. Sadly we all know people who earn more without necessarily deserving it. Lol.
