Oh, there goes Barack Obama again, beating up on the crusading journalists of Fox News for having the guts to selectively depict poor people as terrible leeches. At a Georgetown University event Tuesday, Obama said media narratives have presented a skewed image of poor people, because outrage sells:

I think the effort to suggest that the poor are sponges, leeches, don’t want to work, are lazy, are undeserving, got traction. And, look, it’s still being propagated.

I mean, I have to say that if you watch Fox News on a regular basis, it is a constant menu — they will find folks who make me mad. I don’t know where they find them. They’re all like, “I don’t want to work, I just want a free Obama phone” — or whatever. And that becomes an entire narrative, right? That gets worked up. And very rarely do you hear an interview of a waitress — which is much more typical — who’s raising a couple of kids and is doing everything right but still can’t pay the bills.

Well, sure, but how are you going to make people mad at the poors if you don’t find the most outrageous, atypical poors and then say they’re the norm? Barack Obama would make a terrible cable news producer — he clearly knows nothing about what Fox viewers want to see.

The President went on to say that these media narratives have made it nearly impossible to actually do anything about poverty, because why would anyone want to help a bunch of lazy leeches?

[If] we’re going to change how John Boehner and Mitch McConnell think, we’re going to have to change how our body politic thinks, which means we’re going to have to change how the media reports on these issues and how people’s impressions of what it’s like to struggle in this economy looks like, and how budgets connect to that. And that’s a hard process because that requires a much broader conversation than typically we have on the nightly news.

Aha, so obviously Barack Obama wants to repeal the First Amendment and force Fox News to do his bidding! Not surprisingly, Fox was not about to take these slurs sitting down, or if it was, it was going to make sure that a leggy blonde was sitting in the center of the frame. So on Wednesday morning, Fox & Friends invited Fox’s poor-basher in chief, evil crumpet-munching lackwit Stuart Varney, to defend the network. Fox News has nothing against the poor, said Varney; rather, it’s just asking questions about why Obama has made so many of them:

Obviously, said Varney, the real problem isn’t that Fox has misrepresented poor people; rather, Barack Obama is just trying to distract America from his complete failure to eliminate poverty by cutting taxes enough on the rich, or however it is you eliminate poverty. Fox is simply asking questions that make Obama uncomfortable, like why it is that after “six years of so-called ‘recovery,'” there are still people on food stamps? Also, asked Varney, “Why is it that we’re giving away 13 million Obamaphones after six years of ‘recovery’?” (No, do not bother with the minor detail that Obama didn’t invent the program and that it’s not paid for by taxes). Then there’s the Earned Income Tax Credit, which Varney suggests pays people to be poor. Never mind that Saint Ronald Reagan himself considered the EITC a terrific anti-poverty measure; Varney wants to know why on earth we’re still paying for a “program that distributes millions of checks every year as a tax refund to people who’ve never paid a dime of tax in their lives. Why are we doing this?” As everybody has pointed out forever, even poors who get the EITC do pay tons of other taxes, but why would that matter? They’re just lazy moochers who don’t contribute a dime in taxes, and Obama has made more of them, but no, Varney isn’t criticizing the poor, just the programs that subsidize their lavish, refrigerator-having lifestyles.

Clearly, Barack Obama is hiding his terrible economic record by going after a poor oppressed cable network that is simply telling the truth, which is that the economy is still in the dumps and will get worse because Obama keeps throwing money at poors that we can’t afford! Besides, there is a very simple solution to poverty, according to host Steve Doocy:

If you don’t want to be poor, usually, you wind up with a job. That is the answer.

So the real problem is that the economy is just barely sputtering along, but poor people could all stop being poor if they’d get off their asses and grab one of the abundant jobs out there. Got it.

Still, Doocy may have a point — jobs must be ridiculously easy to get and keep, since a walking pile of stupid like Steve Doocy has one.

If unemployed, the only job that Steve Doocey would ever be able to find is organ donor.

    • But not brain donor.

And his Bile Duct is way to big for a normal person.

Pfffft. That’s an excellent brain. Mint condition! Never been used!

    • FlownOver

How many people are really in the market for an asshole transplant, anyway?

  • Hmm… if having a job is the ticket out of poverty, then conservatives must surely have legislation in mind that would help the economy generate more jobs, right? And they’d be super gung-ho for wages that actually allow you to get out of poverty, as opposed to being both impoverished and over-worked. Right?

Maybe if we outsourced Congress to China, Congress would get it’s act together.

      • I was just reading about the shite job that Chinese contractors appear to have done on the Bay Bridge. Maybe, ironically, we’re better off with our home-grown incompetence.

          • BackDoorMan

… not soon enough apparently. It seems the number of Amtrak accidents have been increasing each year if you look at the past decade, according to CNN (who of course is running this latest disaster right off the rails).

    • janecita

Most of those homeless are war vets.

Why is Barack Obama politicizing poverty?!

  • Viva La Tabula Raza

I really don’t know if it’s a good idea for Obama to be attacking Fox News, although I can understand why he would. But all it seems to do is get them to elevate their stupid by yet another quantum level.

Yes because Obama has not solved a problem that has existed since humans first invented a system of barter (while having a pair of 500-pound anchors called “The House” and “The Senate” tied to his ankles), he clearly is bashing FOX News to distract us from the truth!

Leeches were once considered quite useful. Funny how things change over time.

People I run into seem to resent other people getting anything given to them by the government that they themselves aren’t able to get. Especially if they can’t get it because they aren’t poor enough to qualify.

Unless it’s rich people or large corporations. Somehow, they’re fine with that. Go figure.

I’m reading American Dilemma, a study of “the Negro problem” in the US in the early 40s. The writer says that the major complaint of the southern planters about their tenant and sharecroppers is that if you help them they become lazy and dependant.

This is the culture, with its deep roots in slavery, that is still poisoning our society today.

[Sorry, no snark — I despair for our future. Lincoln should have let these fuckers go.]

  • Like a repentant Catholic with penance, I’m afraid that Obama is going to have to call out FOX News at least 20 more times before I forgive him for that “Fast Track on TPP” shit. (Which, by the way, WOOHOO. Good news coming out of national politics is such a strange feeling it’s like a rush.)

Ughhh, these gelatinous brained hairdoos are making me so mad…alright maybe one way to start solving poverty is to stop paying idiot teevee news personalities millions of dollars to do a job a trained seal can do and channel that money back into the system. You don’t need to be educated to do what Stuart Varney does, or the Dooce does, it’s not like they do any real reporting anyway. They just sit there and blather whatever appears on the teleprompter that comes directly from Roger Ailes and then spend the rest of the time tongue bathing wingnuts and tongue lashing Obama. They aren’t the least bit incisive or educated in their commentary and seem to have the intellectual capacity of sea horses. The Dooce used to be a weatherman if I remember correctly which is about perfect for Faux Nuuz since the weatherman is usually the dumbest one on the news team.

These shitbags as bibble pounding Christians should probably remember, “there by the grace of god go I” and stop acting some entitled jackasses who worked hard to get where they are thus entitling them to bash others when they know fucking well they’ve had the easiest trajectory humanly possible to get to these high paying careers. If they can’t do that then they ought to shut their stupid fucking mouths until they can learn some humility…that’s my advice.

    • BearGHAZI

but being really, really, really good looking has its expenses

      • TheBidenator

They aren’t that good looking…I’m better looking than the Dooce FFS and Stuart Varney looks like a lithograph of a stereotypical lobsterback. I’ll admit Hasselbeck is moderately attractive until she opens her mouth, but that’s about it and Kilmeade looks like a date rapist…

What these Christians don’t know about their own claimed faith could fill a Cathedral.

      • SuspectedDemocrat

Does the kingdom of god come with my own private jet? (checks the bible) Nope! Now pass the collection plate while I thumb through this Gulfstream catalog.

        • Jen_Baker_VA

You only get a private Jet in heaven if you paid for some indulgence during the 1300s. Of course, you never heard of a Jet in those days but hey, gift of grift is blessed in mine eye, so sayeth Koch 3:21

The republicans have used the poor for punching bags every election cycle with the “generational welfare queen”, that went extinct during the Clinton administration when welfare was replaced with TANF (Temporary Assistance For Needy Families). TANFs maximum lifetime use is 5 years.

We could always look at other countries that have successfully managed to lower their poverty levels and emulate the programs and policies that allowed them to. Of course, that would be sane, and not feed the egos of the atrocious moral outrage machine.

  • Latverian Diplomat

I get what Obama is trying to do here, but part of the problem that he’s contributing to instead of addressing is furthering the myth that somehow welfare can be fine-tuned so that absolutely only the “deserving poor” get it. The money and energy wasted on trying to do that is already excessive. And no matter how carefully you try, there will always be a few embarrassing counterexamples to be found (or fabricated) and exploited.

In a perfect world, we would do as Jesus (and a lot of other folks) taught and help everyone who needed it and let fuck ups be fuck ups as long as they didn’t hurt anyone else. But the Christians in this country would never stand for that.

    • Dee Andee

Agreed. If they are allowed to continue to narrow the definition of who is ‘deserving,’ I fear the conservatives of this country would simply move the bar on what ‘deserving’ meant. Right now I (as a disabled person worn down by hard labor much of my life) am of the ‘deserving’ class. But once they screened out all of the ‘lazy grifters,’ I am pretty sure they’d find a way to start vilifying me and others in my situation. Not that they aren’t already doing that with their draconian stipulations in some states. We all get to bear the penalty for what a few people try to get away with (if they even have, since they love to make that shit up).

      • MonaLisaFrown

That’s the thing that bothers me most. While I understand the need for means-testing and scrutiny to a certain degree, the hoop-jumping (particularly for cash aid, which is damn near impossible to get now, as it *sort of* should be) seems to have gotten out of hand to the tune of ‘you don’t qualify because…..’ when your life circumstance might have you at risk for homelessness like yesterday. They’ve got a nice way of putting everyone into robotic categories (again, I get it. There are millions of us.) and it seems that extenuating circumstances are blatantly ignored. A few asshats have ruined it for the rest of those truly needing help, such as yourself. It’s irritating to watch people have to go through this. You’re not asking for the moon and stars here.

  • malsperanza

This brings back memories of the time about 25 years ago when I hitchhiked from NYC to New Orleans–one of the most epic hitches of my life. South of Mason and Dixon, I encountered many colorful characters — too many and too colorful to describe here. Somewhere below Chattanooga, we got picked up by a trucker who clearly owned his own rig: it was a noisy, filthy, rusty rattletrap, and so was he — Caucasian, unshaven, and in his undershirt, surrounded by empty potato-chip bags, and probably high on whites. (Though he did graciously roll-on some antiperspirant on his armpits, over the shirt.)

So we’re chugging down I-59 when a huge black stretch limo blasts past us in the fast lane, going easily 100mph. “There goes another nigger on welfare,” our host remarks.

We got off at the next exit.
