For those who haven't been paying attention, there have been a number of times since 2002 when a couple hundred thousand of us have come to DC on a weekend afternoon and marched around in a giant peaceful circle near the White House and the Capital. Didn't accomplish a whole lot. I'm not particularly convinced today's protests are going to achieve their goal, but bravo to students for trying something new.

Not to be pedantic...oh, who am I kidding, definitely to be pedantic...but I'm sure that picture's actually from 17th & L. I can see my building and the Mayflower in the background. Very, um, interesting sight to walk through on my way in to work this morning. I don't entirely get their rationale - if they're protesting the war, wouldn't it make more sense to protest near the Pentagon, White House, Congress, or State Department, and not, say, random people who already oppose the war who are on their way to work?

Protesting is ineffective unless of course it's violant. Simply hassling people isn't enough. You need to hit them with things, and than be hit with things. Our country was founded with violence, and violence is the only solution. I plan on hitting my boss in the face and saying "out of Iraq, NOW," even though he's a liberal anti-war type. That's effective.

I would rather they protest peacefully in funny costumes than set themselves on fire or get beaten to a pulp by the police. Protests like this, no matter how silly the gimmicks to get attention are, are the great part of living in America.

@MagnusMaximus: I understand your point, but I have also seen people organize giant pillow fights in Union Square Park just for the fun of it and conduct giant city-wide capture the flag meets. So in general, it's hard to discern between people just getting together for foolish laughs and those who genuinely and actively want to initiate some change and awareness to what they believe is a very relevant issue.

Also, regarding the seriousness of the Iraq matter and the lives lost, wouldn't some sobriety do?

There's civil disobedience and then there's some weird outsider art street performance.

How exactly are these disruptions supposed to *do* anything? Basically it just looks like a bunch of well fed unemployeds with costumes and facebooks trying to make a circus-like joke out of a very serious issue.

Why not line up 4,000 people lying in the street to signify the US dead? Or find a way to visually represent the Iraqi dead? Why not a shut down? Or a sit in? Not some weird budget version of Cirque du Soleil(sp?) to try to make people take you seriously.
