A couple of days ago the Obama campaign proudly announced that it had hired Patti Solis Doyle, the most loathed ex-Clinton campaign staffer in the world besides Mark Penn, and a chorus of OH NO HE DID NOTs echoed around the Interblogosphere as horrified political dorks contemplated the meaning of this travesty. The level of stupid in this country is astounding. It is certainly astounding in other countries too, but in some pockets of the United States — small, rural and usually Western frontier towns that are just large enough to have newspapers — you will find the absolute stupidest human beings that have ever lived. Every now and then, one of them miraculously gets a columnist’s slot at the local newspaper. This is the case of Gary Hubbell, columnist for the Aspen Times, who recently outlined the positions of a certain voting bloc: the Angry White Man. In a story titled “Bush, Congress hit bottom in AP poll,” the dutiful AP scribe, Alan Fram, offers some breakthrough analysis in his lede: “WASHINGTON - It’s almost as if people can barely stand the thought of President Bush and Congress anymore.” Is that you, Fram, or just the terrorists talking?
