Protests Work! Cornyn & Rubio Drop SOPA, Obama Rejects Keystone

Here’s a little good news to cheer up your Wednesday: Today’s anti-censorship protest across the Internet has already forced Republican senators Marco Rubio and John Cornyn to drop their support of the SOPA bill. Already! Rubio and Cornyn weren’t just supporters, though — Rubio co-sponsored the legislation that would allow the U.S. government to shut down almost any website for almost any reason, and Cornyn heads the GOP’s Senate campaign group. Happy Anti-Censorship Day, Internet!

Do you know what’s happening, all over the Internet? Sites such as this one, your Wonkette, are taking part in a massive protest action against the SOPA/Protect IP bills, one of which is probably going to become The Law unless a whole lot of us raise hell today. Click the blacked-out “STOP CENSORSHIP” link at the top of this page and you’ll be redirected to the Fight for the Future protest site. From there, you can very quickly and easily let Congress know how you feel about giving the government the power to shut down any website for no reason at all. Will political websites be targeted? Of course they will. Read more on Happy Anti-Censorship Day, Internet!…

SOPA-Loving Congress Also Loves Downloading Pirated Files

Hey, everyone still remember the Stop Online Piracy Act that the cranky old farts over at famous Washington senior center Congress have been feverishly gluing together during craft time, to try to make all that noise from “the tubes” go away? More and more people really, really hate the bill! This is not surprising, because it is awful. What maybe is a little surprising is the number of computers (hundreds!) within the House of Representatives — a body that has so far shown largely bipartisan support for the bill — that are busily downloading pirated content all the freaking time. Take a Moment To Help Defeat the Senate’s Internet Censorship Nonsense (Thing Will Pop Up, Don’t Be Alarmed)

Does this widget thing work? If not, click here! Do it now! (Or in the morning.) This is a part of an effort of a coalition of sites and groups all over the internet. And the chorus of opposition is growing every day — the NYTimes, LATimes, and even Microsoft have come out against SOPA because of the momentum you helped create. Congressional Support Grows For Bill To Shut Down Any Website

There’s suddenly a whole lot of “bipartisan support” for a supposed anti-piracy law that will actually let the U.S. Government force American Internet providers to shut down all access to any website immediately. Why might that be a popular idea, in Congress, right about now? And why are these anti-government Republicans like Congressman Lamar Smith of Texas behind such a heavy handed Big Brother off-switch on the entire Internet? And why is Joe Biden apparently strongly against such legislation, even though the Obama Administration supports it fully? Oh, right, because Biden is talking about how other countries shouldn’t do what the United States is about to do. Read more on Congressional Support Grows For Bill To Shut Down Any Website…
