Hillary Is the Candidate for Change (-ing History)

Monday, January 7th, 2008

More than once, including in this snippy exchange from this weekend’s debate, Hillary Clinton has claimed credit for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (a.k.a., SCHIP- the “S,” by the way, stands for “Senate”). I always kind of thought in the back of my mind that it was a pretty obviously easily-disprovable claim, and, hey, I was right! MORE »

In a stammering speech today, a haggard-looking President Bush criticized Democrats in Congress for producing “the worst record in 20 years.” Bush also said “the Senate was ‘wasting valuable time’ by taking up the children’s health insurance bill, which he had earlier vetoed.” Yikes! He’s probably just having his period or something. [CNN]

GW Newspaper Kids Are the Worst

hatchet.jpgIn one of its two entries Friday displaying a public figure throwing the Shocker, silly Wonkette forgot to credit the single greatest news source in America — George Washington University’s Hatchet — for a photo received anonymously over the tip line. Well, fuck us! We surely deserved this “Cease and disist [sic]” letter from the Hatchet’s senior photo editor, Ben Solomon:

It has come to my attention that you have made an unauthorized use of copyrighted work of The GW Hatchet on the website www.wonkette.com . The copyrighted work is a photo of Ben Stein (the “Work”), which was published on 10/25/07. The GW Hatchet has reserved all rights in the Work. Your work clearly is copyrighted published material owned by The Hatchet…. If I have not received an affirmative response from you by November 9, 2007 indicating that you have fully complied with these requirements, The Hatchet will be required to take further action against you.

As we stew in our war room over how to respond by the all-too-soon Nov. 9 deadline, we thought we’d turn our attention to the Hatchet for a few seconds and make fun of it. MORE »

House Democrats have stopped Minority Leader John Boehner from forcing a vote to censure Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA) for controversial comments he made during last week’s SCHIP debate. Stark, who insinuated that the U.S. sends young’uns to Iraq “to get their heads blown off for the President’s amusement,” has apologized for his comments. No word yet on whether Boehner will continue to censure poor kids for not having health insurance. [Politico]

Democratic Congressman a Disgrace, Republicans Say

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Dude above is Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), who lashed out at House naysayers during yesterday’s SCHIP debate in somewhat controversial fashion. Minority Leader Roy Blunt is already calling for Democrats to denounce him post haste! And for him to denounce himself! MORE »

Republican Simpsons Fans: We Were Not Hacked

Monday, October 15th, 2007

burns.jpgIn response to confusion, anger, tears and questions over why we pay their salaries, the House Energy and Commerce Committee Republicans have confirmed that Friday’s cerebral press release on SCHIP, which used the Simpsons as an allegory, was not the result of a hack. “Hack” in computer (not literary) terms, of course. House Republicans Turn SCHIP into Simpsons Joke

Friday, October 12th, 2007

schip_fact_logo.gifThis mindfuck of a press release came today from the House Energy and Commerce Committee Republicans. It’s called “Bipartisonship on SCHIP!” (it rhymes… hah) and presents the kid’s health thing through the lens of two characters from the Simpsons, “Republican Senate Hopeful” Montgomery Burns and Springfield Mayor Joe Quimby (D). We at Wonkette have been studying this for hours but, frankly, those hours have been a waste. I think Mr. Burns is an anti-hero and Joe Quimby is a tragic hero, and surely hubris and dramatic irony come into play somewhere. Coming soon, George W. Bush’s health savings accounts proposal as elucidated by Hannah Montana.
