If the new Democratic leadership is scared to death of even saying impeachment, Violent Revolution is unlikely to spice up American life any time soon. MORE »

Cyber-libertarian hero R.U. Sirius asked some Great Minds if America has already become a fascist state, but he also asked Wonkette’s West Coast Bureau Chief (who used to write for R.U.’s Getting It) to answer the question. The somber yet comical results can be found at 10 Zen Monkeys, Mr. Sirius’ delightful new webzine. MORE »
New Republic owner/editor Martin Peretz is a man of many descriptions. We like this one from Jack Shafer: “Self-promoter, braggart, Arab-hater, name-dropper, and bad writer.”
So what’s Marty up to these days, beyond writing unreadable love letters to himself (and Israel!) in his magazine?
He’s writing unreadable love letters to himself (and Scooter Libby!) on a crappy new blog!
Painfully collected samples, after the jump ….
In case you missed the earlier warning invitation, a reminder: Reason magazine is having a happy hour at the 18th Street Lounge (1212 18th Street NW) tonight, starting at 6:30. The bar is near the intersection of Jefferson, 18th, and Connecticut, and it’s a little tough to see from the street - look for an unmarked door next to a mattress store and walk up. Special guests include most of the mag’s staff, ABC News’ Jake Tapper, and the DC Examiner’s and FishBowl DC’s Patrick Gavin. MORE »
Today’s Wall Street Journal/OpinionJournal’s Political Diary (US$3.95 or CDN$45.00 per month, the bastards) has a seering, smart, and stupendously self-promoting item about immigration images through the ages (well, from about 100 years ago). Jason Riley, author of most of the WSJ’s stirringly pro-immigration editorials, talks with one Nick Gillespie of one Reason magazine about the half-life of anti-immgrant imagery: MORE »
Surrounded by a dozen-and-a-half families with “snowflake babies“–kids born of frozen embryos–President Bush has done did the first veto of his presidency: killing legislation for increased federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research. Note the increased there–back in 2001, the prez allowed some of the same sort of research to continue, which sort of undercuts the murder equivalency argument his spokesman is wont to use in explaining Bush’s position. Last night, the Wonkettes left their respective apartments and headed out into the real world, to attend an exciting event at the National Press Club. The event, “An Army of Davids or the Triumph of Goliath?”, was pitched as “a no-holds-barred debate” between these three giants: Glenn Reynolds, the Instapundit himself, and author of the just-published An Army of Davids; Joe Trippi, former campaign manager for Howard Dean, and author of The Revolution Will Not Be Televised; and Barry C. Lynn, senior fellow at the New American Foundation, and author of End of the Line. (They are pictured above, from left to right: Lynn, Trippi, Reynolds, and moderator Nick Gillespie, editor-in-chief of Reason.)
After the jump, our comprehensive coverage — plus more fantastic photos, taken by Wonkette shutterbug Liz Gorman, Intrepid Girl Reporter. Enjoy!
• “Iraqi leaders postponed by several hours today a special session to submit a draft constitution to the National Assembly, giving themselves more time to work on a document that has been plagued by what its drafters have described as ‘a totally whacked out printer.’” [Reference Tone]
• Chuck Schumer likes coffee ice cream and the sound of his own name. [WP]
•“John Roberts is either a mad bomber of abortion clinics or a homo-tastic friend of the sodomite.” [TDS @ Comedy Central]
• The American Prospect pities the contributor whose “politics were drifting Rightward without me even realizing it. These things happen, I was told, and not without some sympathy.” [Reason's Hit and Run]
• The only reason you should care about what these people think of recent albums is that one of them will probably pick Hillary’s genera-rock campaign theme. [NYM]
