BARACK OBAMA

Wonkette Baracks The Caucus!

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Not the cutest ones, but the only ones posing with the signThursday night, a bunch of local Obama groups got together at Bailey’s in Ballston to watch the Iowa caucus results and someone, foolishly, invited us. Why did we go? Frankly, we thought there’d be an open bar. Why did we stay? Well, suddenly Obama was winning and, um, there were cute boys and then I ended up having a really interesting conversation with a lovely woman about how Obama’s camp is using the internet to connect with a respond to supporters that I’ve since forgotten but which actually went beyond this article I’d already read. Intrepid Girl Reporter Liz Gorman joined the party, though, and her pictures are after the jump.

Megan Carpentier Waterboarded Me, and It Was Torture

Friday, December 21st, 2007

Wonkette readers, I never properly introduced myself when I started in October — and this was because I have been living a lie. I am not, in fact, Jim Newell, the “supposed” 22-year-old brat in Washington who makes mindfuckingly hilarious political jokes and uber-trenchant political observation. I am actually Jim al-Newell, a perceived terrorist with al-Qaeda who has all sorts of fun CIA information and shit like that. I hid this double agent status well until one day, when I was walking around DC with Megan Carpentier and I *stupidly* wore my favorite t-shirt — the one that says “Perceived Terrorist” in big A-rab letters on the front. Megan proceeded to waterboard me and asked all sorts of insidery-like questions, like “What time should we publish the gossip roundup?” Torture, I says! She proceeded to destroy the tape of this session — but oh ho ho, my secret camera caught it all! Watch it above! Death to teh Amerkaz, I’m not going anywhere!

PARTIES

NHFA’s Noche de Gala

Friday, October 12th, 2007

We continue to celebrate our last day by presenting scenes from yet another party that we neglected to attend. This one was the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts’ Eleventh Annual Noche de Gala Dinner, held last week at the Mayflower’s Grand Ballroom. Honored guests included, Jimmy Smits, Kenny Ortega, Ed Markey, and FCC commisioner Robert McDowell. And our own Liz Glover and Liz Gorman, who documented the whole affair for your enjoyment. Gorman’s gallery may be found here! And some of Glover’s reflections are after the jump.

The District Line Grand Opening

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Last week, local British clothing emporium The District Line opened its flagship store in Georgetown. And because we bought a coat there once and also our friend designed the place and also especially because there was free gin all night we went to their party! And brought the intrepid Liz Gorman, who took pictures! And then we were going to put these pictures up on Monday but we forgot and then it became kind of a hectic week soon thereafter and so now, here they are, finally, the photos from the District Line party.

GQ’s Most Powerful People Party

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

When GQ put out their list of the most powerful people in Washington, we all had a good laugh at how dumb some of their choices were. Then because we are whores we accepted their invite to a party at Cafe Milano last Monday night (never forget!). Liz Gorman came too, she took pictures. We just drank. Gallery here, random recollections after the jump.

EVENTS

Adams Morgan Day!

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Last Sunday was the Adams Morgan Day Festival! Did you go? Because we’re pretty sure you did, it was a total fucking madhouse trying to even cross 18th street that afternoon. Also there was some old-tymey folk bank playing and we were like, really? Banjos and mandolins? That is Adams Morgan’s cultural heritage? Are all the Ethiopians and Latinos secretly poor southern Dust Bowl farmers or something? Anyway — Liz Gorman took some very lovely pictures there that we think you should look at. You’ll find them here.

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Last week, Liz and Liz went to one of the thousand terrible David Beckham parties that took over DC and then, just as quickly, faded from everyone’s memory. Relive the excitement with Ms. Gorman’s gallery of photos and Ms. Glover’s write-up, after the jump!

The Modernist Society @ Bourbon

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Last Thursday, we walked over to Bourbon to hear, we thought, some dude from Vice talk to some dude from al-Jazeera English about… well, something? It was The Modernist Society’s first monthly party at one of 18th St. last remaining tolerable bars (if you’re upstairs, anyway), and we were there because it was within walking distance.
