Morning Maddow: Remember When Reagan Went To A Whites-Only Golf Course And Fought MLK Day?

On a day when many rightwingers now claim that Martin Luther King really agreed with them, Rachel Maddow takes us back to 1983, when the right was at least honest about their feelings toward King: They considered him a communist who wasn’t worth a national holiday. Ronald Reagan only reluctantly came to accept a King holiday as inevitable, and after deciding to sign a bill declaring a federal holiday, had to call Coretta Scott King to apologize for writing a letter to a John Birch Society leader saying he shared the Bircher’s reservations about a King holiday, and that popular sentiment for King was “based on an image, not reality.” Reagan made that call shortly before visiting Augusta National Golf Course, which at the time allowed only white members, a policy it didn’t reverse until 1990. Imagine that. Mrs. King accepted the apology, and then later that weekend Reagan oversaw the invasion of Grenada in his pajamas: Read more on Morning Maddow: Remember When Reagan Went To A Whites-Only Golf Course And Fought MLK Day?…

Sundays With The Christianists: American History Textbooks That Will Protect Your Homeschooler’s Precious Bodily Fluids

Yay for the 1950s! One of the best times in America, according to our textbooks for Christian schools, though of course the Gilded Age was pretty darn awesome as well. Our 8th-grade textbook, America: Land I Love (A Beka, 2006), has no doubt it was a terrific time: Living in a country that rewarded hard work with increased wages and profits, parents worked hard to provide for their children … A strong moral and spiritual foundation undergirded America’s prosperity. Americans still practiced the Protestant work ethic, taking pride in their work and striving for excellence. The moral values of Biblical Christianity provided a just standard of law, order, and mutual respect, which in turn increased material prosperity. Our 11th/12th-grade book from Bob Jones University Press, United States History for Christian Schools, is a bit less boosterish; it attributes the postwar prosperity to America’s industrial base being unscathed by WW II, and notes that Cold War defense spending helped fuel much of the boom, though the high marginal tax rates on the rich somehow never get mentioned by either book. But all this prosperity and happiness for all Americans (just shut up about Jim Crow, please, we’ll get to that next week) was threatened by the menace of hordes of Communist infiltrators who were definitely everywhere, according to Land I Love, or at least real and very dangerous, according to U.S. History. So please raise your right hand and swear your loyalty to God, the flag, and John Wayne, and let’s go bait some Reds. Ron Paul Doesn’t Hate Jews, He Just Speaks To Groups That Hate Jews

Ron Paul is scheduled to be the keynote speaker for a Sept. 11 conference sponsored by The Fatima Center, a rightwing “radical traditionalist” Catholic group that the Southern Poverty Law Center calls “perhaps the single largest group of hard-core anti-Semites in North America.” But that doesn’t mean that Ron Paul is an anti-Semite, after all. He can’t help it if his message of individual responsibility and kooky yearning for the Gold Standard happens to appeal to a Taliban Catholic group that promotes “New World Order” conspiracy claims and whose publications have published columns criticizing the Pope for “kowtowing” to the “Synagogue of Satan,” argued that Jews are attempting to undermine the Catholic Church on behalf of Satan, and claiming that “Zionist billionaires” have been “financially raping” the Russian people. Besides, you don’t have to be an anti-Semite to believe that stuff, you just have to hate the Jews. Read more on Ron Paul Doesn’t Hate Jews, He Just Speaks To Groups That Hate Jews…

Tennessee House Fights 20-Year-Old UN ‘Sustainability’ Plan, Because ‘Forced Abortion’

The Republican swath of the Tennessee House appears to have gotten an email chain letter from far-right crazy uncle the John Birch Society (desperate times), and the Tennessee House has heeded its call! Seems the New World Order managed to pass a truly insidious United Nations plan called Agenda 21 (it just sounds communist, wouldn’t you say?), and the Tennessee House aims to stop it! The point of Agenda 21, according to the U.N., is to support sustainable development: to “alleviate poverty and curb global warming,” as the Tennessean puts it. Tennessee House GOP translation: THESE TREE-HUGGIN BABY-HATIN COMMIE FOCKERS! Read more on Tennessee House Fights 20-Year-Old UN ‘Sustainability’ Plan, Because ‘Forced Abortion’…

NYT Magazine: Is Mike Allen Weird Because His Dad Was a Bircher?

The “gotcha” part of the NYT “takedown” of Politico/Mike Allen is so pathetic, we feel bad for Mike Allen. Turns out his dad, who died a quarter-century ago, was a wingnut who wrote John Birch crap and was suspicious of government! Sort of like EVERY OTHER DAD IN ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA. Conversely, Mike Allen enjoys writing about Washington power structures, and knowing the people involved. Outrage? Anyway, that’s the “takedown” that explains this earlier bit (page three? page seven?) about Mike Allen being creepy/private. Blog Reporter Dave Weigel Is President Of John Birch Society

Wonkette CPAC tipster GARRETT3000 sends us our “last CPAC photo,” for the 22,000th time, this one capturing allegedly “neutral” blog reporter Dave Weigel, who writes about crazy people for the Washington Independent. Turns out he is one of the crazy people, because here he is clearly 100% endorsing the racist John Birch Society, with a bag, the bag carrying five pounds of white-on-white porn. DID YOU PAY FIVE CENTS TAX ON THAT BAG, RACIST? Read more on Blog Reporter Dave Weigel Is President Of John Birch Society…

Freaking John Birch Society To Co-Sponsor CPAC 2010

Meanwhile, in the latest conservative news, the Republican mainstream continues to slide into ultra-nationalistic militaristic paranoia and championed white supremacy along the normal trajectory: the actual John Birch Society — the comically radical conservative organization of racists and psychotic libertarians who pretended to fight domestic commies, 50 years ago — has of course been named a cosponsor of next year’s CPAC, the conservatives’ important annual mid-week terrorfest at which delegations of the nation’s top barely-functioning insane wingnuts decide who gets to run for what job. The Top 10 Rudy Giuliani 9/11 References In Global History

Because Rudy Giuliani ended his campaign for America’s terrorism mayor yesterday, and because the kids enjoy top 10 lists (like on the David Letterman show), and because it is the most obvious opportunity to strike since 9/11, here is your list of the best Giuliani references to America’s Holiday in the Sun, 9/11. After this, we hope to never speak about either Rudy Giuliani or 9/11 again. The very existence of Rudy’s campaign, after all, proved that the terrorists had won a long time ago.
