Allen v. Webb: Virginia Really Not Coming Off That Great to Rest of Country Right Now

One pair of these boots hates Colored folk. (Photo: AP) The single most imporant issue facing the country: WHO HATED BLACK PEOPLE 40 YEARS AGO? Salon found someone to corroborate the George Allen put a deer head in a black family’s mailbox story (would a deer head fit in a mailbox? Is this another Koran/toilet thing?), and then the Allen guys found someone to say that his opponent, James “Thunder Thighs” Webb, was even racister back in 1963. Guy was white, Southern, and headed for the military, so of fucking course he was, but Allen’s team found the nuttiest possible crazy man to tell a nutty crazy story about Webb and friends driving around Watts, pointing unloaded guns at black people, shouting epithets, pulling the trigger, and laughing all the way back home. DIVISIVE VIRGINIA SENATE RACE TO PIT MISOGYNIST BROTHER AGAINST RACIST BROTHER

Still no damn details on the Jim Webb “thunder thighs” remark. The Baltimore Sun editorial cited by the Allen campaign reads as follows: Such acts are less surprising, but no less disturbing, when put in a context typified by former Navy Secretary James Webb’s description of female middies as “thunder thighs.” It’s quoting a New Republic piece from earlier in the year, which we finally found (guys, your archiving system sucks almost as much as your publisher, blogs, editorial content, and circulation). Excerpt after the jump, though the text is exactly as it appears on Allen’s site. The source, unless we’re missing something (and no, we don’t have the full text of Webb’s Washingtonian piece, “Women Are Pussies”), is author Carol Burke herself, who doesn’t explain if it’s something she witnessed or something she heard about, or if it came from his speech before the school or in casual conversation. We don’t doubt it, we just want context! THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY CALLED SOMEONE “THUNDER THIGHS.” Tell us who and why! JIM WEBB CIRCA 1979 HATED WOMEN, PROBABLY DISCO

It was weeks ago when we first learned about the Allen campaign push polls that asked potential voters how they’d feel if they learned that Democratic challenger Jim Webb referred to a woman or women as “thunder thighs.” And now, finally, we learn what the hell they’re talking about: Webb referred to female midshipman at Annapolis as “thunder thighs.” (Baltimore Sun, 8/28/92) ONCE AGAIN (we’re super responsible today, what with all this research), our exclusive investigation into this is after the jump. Macaca Goes For Week Three

We did as much as we possibly could to keep the Macaca story afloat, we admit (come on, it’s August), but we are still fairly amazed by the results of the Wall Street Journal/Zogby Interactive poll showing whatsisface (you know, the Dragnet guy) ahead of a man who, up until this month, had been thought of as a good bet for the GOP Presidential nomination. Sure, it’s by one point, but who knew veiled racism had political consequences! In Virginia! Now all the challengers with nothing to lose will be getting their own Indian kids. WEBB RACE SCANDAL: SOME WHITES ARE POOR, SENATE HOPEFUL CLAIMS

RedState, presumably receiving tips from the same friendly guys who sent us Webb’s kid’s MySpace page, finds this backpage blurb from James Webb: Politicians and judges over the past forty years have created the mythology that white America is a monolith whose history is based on social and economic privilege, while anyone who is not white is by definition disadvantaged. No one knows this better than William Perry Pendley and a few have done more to put an end to this outrage. Read more on WEBB RACE SCANDAL: SOME WHITES ARE POOR, SENATE HOPEFUL CLAIMS…

Daily Briefing: A Rising Tide?

Recent good news, including the killing of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi and the non-indictment of Karl Rove, may lift President Bush’s poll numbers, allowing the White House and the GOP to get off the defensive. [WP; WP] Read more on Daily Briefing: A Rising Tide?…
