Morning Maddow: Mitt, You Said You Were Done. Really, You Did (Video)

Rachel is nobody's beard
Remember when Al Gore left office in 2001, went to Europe for a while, and came back with a beard? Rachel Maddow notes that in “our modern fake political science,” the beard meant Gore was finished with politics, or at least formal runs for office. Rachel briefly reviews some notable examples of the “dashed presidential aspirations beard” in recent years, and notes that one Willard Mittington Hi-Hi Puffy AmiYumi McBoingBoing Romney never grew a beard after he lost in 2012, which means that technically, he has never conceded. Even so, considering all the flat declarations at the time that he was done, absolutely done, with presidential politics, it’s a surprise that he’s making all these “Yeah, I’ll run” noises now. This is the guy who, when the New York Times asked him in 2013 if he’d consider running a third time, seemed fairly certain: “Oh, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no. No, no, no.” Read more on Morning Maddow: Mitt, You Said You Were Done. Really, You Did (Video)…

Google Gaffes, Gets Dippy Dana Rohrabacher In High Dudgeon Over Dinesh D’Souza’s New Doc

It is strange goddamn times we live in when Dana Rohrabacher says something astoundingly, head-smackingly dumb and it’s still barely in the top fifty of dumb things we’ve heard this week. Nonetheless and also such as, this is pretty dumb. Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, a frequent foe of Google, is demanding to know why the giant Internet company was fumbling the search results for Dinesh D’Souza’s movie America for nearly three weeks. “This doesn’t deserve to be ignored. We need to verify the statistics in some way, and I will be suggesting the appropriate committee or subcommittee have some kind of hearing on this,” Rohrbacher said. “We know there were significant incidences, and that would suggest there was intent behind Google’s nonperformance.” Read more on Google Gaffes, Gets Dippy Dana Rohrabacher In High Dudgeon Over Dinesh D’Souza’s New Doc…

Rick Santorum’s Hobby Lobby Documentary: America’s Gonna Ban Christianity And Go Nazi (Video)

So now that the Hobby Lobby case has established once and for all the sacred right of employers to crack down on rowdy ladyparts, Rick Santorum’s Echolight Studios wants you all to know that they just happen to have a movie in the works that includes a discussion of Hobby Lobby — what excellent timing! One Generation Away: The Erosion of Religious Liberty is all about how Christianity is under siege and America’s just on the verge of going completely Nazi. And one of the main examples is the Hobby Lobby case, in which brave Christian business owners were brutally oppressed by a government mandate to cover the very birth control that they had already covered until 2012. Now, the whole “religious freedom is endangered” claim doesn’t seem like it’s supported by the fact that Hobby Lobby won the right to tell women to get bent, so we’ll be curious how the movie fits that in. But according to the trailer, the government is coming to cut down all the crosses and wish them into the cornfield. Let Us Watch The Trailer For Errol Morris’s Documentary About Donald Rumsfeld And Seethe Together

I cut way back on my moviegoing at least a decade ago because after several years of living and working in Hollywood and seeing how the sausage gets made, so many movies filled me with an incandescent rage. So it will be nice to see a movie this April that fills me with incandescent rage for totally non-Hollywood-related reasons. Pat Robertson So Mad About Accurate Documentary On His Terrible Rwanda Charity Scam

You are probably just as surprised as we are to learn that a new documentary film details how Pat Robertson ran a fake charity following the 1994 Rwandan genocide — which is to say, not the least bit surprised. The film, Mission Congo, by Lara Zizic and David Turner, premieres today at the Toronto International Film Festival; while Robertson claimed the charity, “Operation Blessing International,” achieved great things for Rwandan refugees in Zaire and Congo, its actual accomplishments were pretty modest, especially compared to the hundreds of millions of dollars it continues to raise. Oh, and then there are the former aid workers at Operation Blessing, who describe how mercy flights to save refugees were diverted hundreds of miles from the crisis to deliver equipment to a diamond mining concession run by the televangelist. Seriously, go read this article in the Guardian, but make sure you aren’t holding anything you might hurl through your computer screen, OK? Socialized ER Care Is Such A Sweet Deal, Unless You Have Ball Cancer

Isn’t it wonderful to live in the land of socialized health care, where You People can all go to the ER of our local hospitals and receive medical services that everyone else pays for? As Mitt pointed out, “If someone has a heart attack, they don’t sit in their apartment and die. We pick them up in an ambulance and take them to the hospital and give them care.” And indeed we do! But what if that same uninsured or underinsured Someone has, say, testicular cancer? Do we pick him up in an ambulance and take him to the hospital and give him care? No. We do not. We tell him that we won’t treat him, but that it’s “urgent” he get care. Read more on Socialized ER Care Is Such A Sweet Deal, Unless You Have Ball Cancer…
