It’s strange, sort of, that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson would endorse Barack Obama right now. True, Richardson is a psychotically ambitious career-builder who likes to keep his name in the papers. And someone like Richardson only sees an endorsement as a bargaining chip for an appointed position, because he loves nothing more than bragging about his resume. Job, jobs, jobs, look at all the jobs I’ve had, blah blah, make me President because of my jobs, so then I can get more new jobs. Bill Richardson is such a sexist skirt-chaser that he has decided to endorse the male senator over the female senator who’s married to the guy he used to work for. The newly bearded New Mexico Governor and former ambassador to the U.N. under Bill Clinton will be endorsing Barack Obama for president today somewhere in Oregon. [NYT]

Bill Richardson has held most important government jobs, but America just wasn’t ready for a Mexican citizen to be its president. We’ll get there, with Hope. He still could be a vice presidential selection, however, and now the non-loser candidates are aggressively courting his endorsement. Barack, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, perhaps even Franklin Delano Roosevelt somehow — they have all been jamming Richardson’s phone line, most likely offering “back room deals.” Indeed, it’s springtime for Bill Richardson — that career of resume-workshopping has finally gotten him some bites. Bill Richardson started putting the weight back on recently, which is how everyone knew he was planning on dropping out of the Presidential race. He plans to make that official some time later today. The only real question is behind whom he’ll throw his (massive) support, because it’ll either be a delicious fuck-you to a front runner or a lame attempt to pick the winner so he can get that VP/Secretary of State slot that everyone was pretty sure he was “running” for in the first place. Hillary Clinton has a problem. She came in third tonight, but she’s still got to go stand up there with a bunch of corpses from her husband’s administration and act like beating Bill Richardson’s 2% is a great victory. Whatever you say, Hill.

It’s afternoon on the day of the Iowa caucuses (huzzah!), which is about time for the candidates that are obviously going to lose, that were always going to lose and lose badly, to make backup plans. They need 15% to make the second ballot tonight, but when has Dennis Kucinich, Joe Biden or Bill Richardson ever seen a number like that next to his name?
