Happy Exxon Valdez 25th Anniversary Day! What Fish Will You Murder To Celebrate?

This post brought to you by the Patty Dumpling Endowed Blogging Chair For Oil Spill Clusterfucks. It’s been a quarter-century since the oil tanker Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of oil in the formerly known as pristine Prince William Sound, and here we are today still burning the earth’s toxic runny shits and farts for our convenience and pleasure. Of course, few believed back then that it would be otherwise. But at least there was reason to hope that the specific harms of the Exxon Valdez spill could be limited — that with enough Dawn dish soap and American elbow degrease, and with the nation’s disapproving glare fixed on Exxon, Prince William Sound could be properly cleaned up. Except it turns out that oil really fucking sucks. Read more on Happy Exxon Valdez 25th Anniversary Day! What Fish Will You Murder To Celebrate?…

DC Tea Partiers Exercise Free Speech, Assembly Rights, Protest Government Tyranny

The Tea Party finally noticed that it turned five like a week and a half ago, so what could these insurgent grassroots heartland Willy Lomans do but get together with a bunch of Senators and millionaires in Washington DC to celebrate? Michelle Cottle of the Daily Beast was there, gulping the very same air as Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Michele Bachmann, Louie Gohmert, and other ones. Ms. Cottle tips her wry liberal hand early on: “Martial language flowed thick, and variations on the word “tyranny” were hot, hot, hot.” But while she may be lamestream to her core, we don’t doubt that she overheard much talk of sanguinary horticulture, second amendment solutions, and letting God sort ‘em out. Then things get weird. Read more on DC Tea Partiers Exercise Free Speech, Assembly Rights, Protest Government Tyranny…

The Tea Party Is Five Years Old Today, And Finally Acting Its Age

Five years ago today, Rick Santelli went on your teevee and said “We’re thinking of having a tea party” to protest (ostensibly) the Homeowners Affordability and Stability Plan, which was something that helped people keep their houses, even if these dumb homeowners were personally irresponsible and got fired because the economy shed however many million jobs in 2008-9, the nerve of some people, being affected by massive economic shocks! Said Santelli: Why don’t you put up a website to have people vote on the Internet as a referendum to see if we really want to subsidize the losers’ mortgages, or would we like to at least buy cars and buy houses in foreclosure and give them to people that might have a chance to actually prosper down the road and reward people that could carry the water instead of drink the water.” We would never insinuate that Rick Santelli was trying to move policy away from trying to stop foreclosures, in order to help his friends in the big investment banks get into the business of buying cheap rental houses and securitizing the rent payments, just as they’ve been doing for some time now, but we just did. Whoops! Read more on The Tea Party Is Five Years Old Today, And Finally Acting Its Age…

Gun Fondlers Just Want Equal Time At Aurora Victims’ Ceremony To Remember The Poor Confiscated Guns

A pro-gun group plans to hold a demonstration in favor of the 2nd Amendment in the same suburban Denver park where a remembrance will be held for victims of the Aurora theater shootings, which occurred one year ago today. Members of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners insist that they have no choice but to stand their ground in the park, since the remembrance is being sponsored by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which has threatened freedom by pressing state legislatures to pass slightly tougher restrictions on gun sales. Showing up to advocate gun rights at a memorial for shooting victims is simply RMGO’s way of ensuring that survivors of the shootings not get away with politicizing the victims’ deaths. Nation Celebrates Roe v. Wade Birthday With Scary Videos, Hypocrisy, Balloons

Libruls really hit the holiday jackpot this week! First, we had Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Inauguration Day at the same time, which appropriately coincided with the made-up Fox News holiday, “Sadness Day” (a holiday Olds celebrate by eating burnt pot roast and scowling at Wheel of Fortune). But the fun did not stop there! Yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which is a Supreme Court decision that lots of people have heard of, yet as the New York Times points out, remains a mystery among the vast majority of America’s tween population, who recognize abortion as that thing that will get an episode of their favorite Canadian teen drama series banned on Nickelodeon. LA Riots 1992: What The South-Central Schoolteacher Saw

Five days after the beginning of the upheaval schools across LA open on Monday morning. Son John is nervous about me going back. “It’s fine,” I tell him. (But years later he tells me that he was always scared after that when I went to work.) But I’ve got to put food on the table and a roof over our heads.
