While Bob Ehrlich’s toupee is egregious, he’s not the most vain man ever to occupy the Maryland governor’s mansion. At least he doesn’t show up to work wearing make-up.

Wonkette’s Week in Review

• In case you’re just returning from a long vacation at a secluded Caribbean hideaway, where you had no access to television, radio, newspapers, or the internet, here’s what you missed: Vice President Dick Cheney shot a man last weekend, then took his sweet time in telling the American people about it. • Maryland comptroller (and former state governor) William Donald Schaefer is one dirty old man. He might enjoy visiting the offices of Sen. Jeff Sessions.

• Down in the Sunshine State, Donna Shalala is livin’ large, while Ann Coulter is making Palm Beach poll workers eat her dust.

• Meanwhile, back in Washington, Michael Chertoff spent much of last Wednesday sitting in the hot seat before the Senate. It wasn’t as much fun as Brownie’s testimony; but we now know that neither Chertoff nor Donald Rumsfeld uses email.

• Despite continued high jinks on the Hill, America’s lawmakers are getting bored. And if something exciting doesn’t happen soon, they won’t be the only ones. Please, Mr. Vice President — shoot somebody else this weekend!

William Donald Schaefer: Out of Comptrol!

Yesterday we briefly mentioned the ogling incident involving Maryland comptroller (and former state governor) William Donald Schaefer. After being called on his inappropriate comments to a young female aide, Schaefer defended himself unapologetically: “That’s so goddamn dumb, I can’t believe it… [She] ought to be damn happy that I observed her going out the door. The day I don’t look at pretty women is the day I die.”

The controversy has gotten more attention since then, so we’ll supplement the record with some gossip about Schaefer from our readers:

• he’s a vain man who wears make-up to events, in order to look good for photos (hey, nothing wrong with a little metrosexuality!);

• according to a reader, he has “grabbed the butts of at least two women that I know, conveniently in crowded situations”; and

• he regularly makes “very crude comments” at news events and public meetings.

The mainstream media can vouch for that last point. The Baltimore Sun reports that Schaefer “has railed against McDonald’s employees who speak limited English and people with AIDS, and has long called the women with whom he works ‘little girls.’”

In summary, according to one Wonkette operative, “this latest bit of news is no surprise to those of us who have had to deal with him in the past.” The man is “a total nutcase”!
