‘Post’ Blogger Ben Domenech: Kinda Screwed

The Wash Post’s Red America blogger, and frequent target of unhinged attacks from us, has been revealed as a plagiarist (we do think it’s reached the point where the allegedly can be removed — once or twice you can blame on a college paper editor, but this is a bit much). Kurtz’s column on it seems to have been filed before some of the more serious, non-Nick Cage movie-related charges came out, so there’s no word on Post reaction — but if the defection of Michelle Malkin to the “yeah, probably should look into that” camp is any indication, Red America might be going on a bit of a hiatus. Here with further comment is our very own Conservative contributor Sergeant Wonkette:

Hi everyone, Sergeant Wonkette here, reporting live from THE HEARTLAND. I write this from the front porch of a simple working man’s home in Ames, Iowa, the sort of man you meet every day in small towns across what the coastal elites scoffingly call “the flyover land.”

The sun’s just rising over the cornfield, and a rooster has just declared the start of another hard day’s work. Becuase it’s morning again in America. Today more men and women will go to work than ever before in our country’s history. With interest rates at about half the record highs of 1980, nearly 2,000 families today will buy new homes, more than at any time in the past three days.

This afternoon 6,500 young men and women will be married, and with inflation at less than half of what it was just three days ago, they can look forward with confidence to the future. It’s morning again in America, and under the blogging of Ben Domenech, our country is prouder and stronger and better. Why would we ever want to return to where we were less than three short days ago?

Oh No, William and Mary Won’t Do

This is why Sergeant Wonkette blogs under a pseudonym.

When I was a sophomore in college, there was a young conservative boy who worked with me at the college paper. He would follow me around a bit, asking me lots of questions about how I wrote my column, and being a bit odd in terms of social grace. He was a homeschooled lad with an “aw shucks, you liberals are like animals at the zoo” attitude. He viewed everyone as a liberal.

As the year went on, he developed a bit of an adoration for me. I say this not in some kind of bragging way, but because it led to one of the strangest moments of my life. He showed up at Psi U for Halloween, wearing khakis and a blue blazer, a goofy tie on with his dress shirt. “What are you supposed to be?” the doorman asked. “I’m Jon Novak!” he said, raising a notepad with a heading that said “Confusion Corner” on it.

For those who don’t get the costume, in addition to writing a weekly humor column called Confusion Corner, I was also a member of the premier college acappella group, the Gentlemen of the College, who wore khakis, blue blazers and wacky ties.

Anyway, the moment of having someone dressed as me for halloween has always stuck out as one of those “is that my fifteen minutes of fame” moments in my life. I will always remember it fondly.

Today, I found out what my old friend and wannabe protege was up to. His name, by the way: Ben Domenech

You know, the exact same thing happened to us with David Ignatious. This whole creepy Single White Female thing, it was weird.

Introducing: Sergeant Wonkette’s Real America

We here at Wonkette would like to announce that in the interest of affirmative action balance, we have decided to hire a conservative contributor. The new member of the team, who will be blogging under the name Sergeant Wonkette, is a long-time commenter at Little Green Footballs, occasional leaflet photocopier, and former senior editor of The New Republic. His first contribution begins below:
Look, we won. That’s it. Go home, everyone else, because the game is over. Republicans OWN you, bitch. We run Congress, the courts, the White House, most of the state capitols, and the Washington Times. We got The West Wing canceled. We made Mark Warner look creepy as hell. Despite all this, you MSM types (that’s “main-stream media” for you MSM types) still don’t get us. Look, it’s simple: we like God,guns, kids, cars, and our country. We don’t like commies and terrorists. And we’re in the majority.

During the discussions about the launch of this new feature, the good folks at Wonkette spent far too much time in sessions with markers and whiteboard, trying to settle on a name for the column. The suggestions were all over the map - but one suggestion provided a reminder of the sociopolitical divide in this country. “What about ‘The Crackdown’?” said managing editor/metrosexual pantywaist Lockhart Steele.

“Well, only if you want to make people think it was a gun blog,” I said, to puzzled faces.

“The Crackdown? You must know it - that’s the subtitle of Death Wish 4, starring Conservative Icon Charles Bronson! It’s a Reagan-era masterpiece! Wow, what a trenchant and totally non-made-up example of the out-of-touchitude of the coastal elites who run the media! Good thing I am here for balance.
