An Evening With Justice Alito: A Photo Essay
No, this isn’t a Benetton ad. Left to right: Grant Vinik; Jeannie Rhee; Jessie Liu; Justice Samuel Alito (duh); Robin Meriweather; and Anna-Marie Roop.
Last night, one-half of Wonkette attended the annual dinner of the Yale Law School Assocation of Washington, DC, at the National Press Club. The dinner honored Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr., Yale Law School class of 1975, the newest member of the Supreme Court.
The proceedings were declared off the record, so we can’t tell you about Justice Alito’s thoughtful, erudite, and highly entertaining remarks. Nor can we share with you the fantastic conversations we had over dinner, at a star-studded table. All the journalists — and quasi-journalists — had to put away our notebooks for the night.
But no one said anything about cameras. So we took lots of photographs of the assembled legal luminaries — such as the picture shown above, in which Justice Alito “strikes a pose,” looking like a general about to head into battle.
Additional pictures — including photos of the evening’s other celebrity, Sen. Arlen Specter, Yale Law School class of 1956 — appear after the jump. (These are amateur photos; please don’t mistake them for the work of Liz Gorman.)
Charlie Savage, of the Boston Globe, and Robert Bernard Davis, of WilmerHale.
Professor William Eskridge; Sen. Arlen Specter; and Michael O’Neill, chief counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Professor Eskridge and Senator Specter.
Left to right: the back of an unidentified hottie’s head; Professor Eskridge; Senator Specter; and Professor O’Neill.
Alito law clerk Sasha Volokh, and his wife, Hanah Volokh.
Ryan Bounds, chief of staff at the Office of Legal Policy, and Stacey Bennett, soon to be joining Kirkland & Ellis. He sure is tall, isn’t he?
If you don’t know who this guy is by now, you should be reading a newspaper, not this blog. Props for the Yale Law School necktie. New Haven, represent!

Honest curiosity: Why is it OK for one of the most powerful figures in the country to give a speech to a room full of hundreds of people, including many journalists, and demand that nobody tell anybody what was said in that room? What possible reason would he have for secrecy? If you don't want people to know what you said, why the hell did you make it a public speech? Why would reporters go to such an event when they are by definition banned from reporting on what went on there? (We know why David went: free food and booze. I'm talking about newspaper and TV folks.)
I can sort of -- sort of -- see the point at a thing like this which is technically an alumni event. Presumably the Yalies need to talk about the Secret World Government they run and all. But the speeches that Scalia gives around the country and then demands that nobody report on: what the fuck? If you don't want people to know what you're saying, why did you say it in the first place?

Alito: "My God man...take the picture aleady...this pole up my ass is killing me!"

Is Sasha Volokh hitting on me? And tell him to get out of the way, I want to chat with the comely young lady behind him.

Aww, that's cute Jfruh. But gee whiz , why would anyone want to be off the record? Maybe, just maybe, people want to be able to relax and talk off-the-cuff without worrying about how each and every word would be scrutinized by overly serious folk keen to get their panties in a bunch? Just a hunch. I certainly wouldn't want the New York Times editorial crew analyzing each word I said over dinner last night (though an editorial on Midget tossing in China may be quite entertaining).

I demand to know how many innocent, young cameras were tortured to produce this report! Stop camera cruelty, no more photos of Yalies!
Serious, what a homely crowd. Y'all may run the world, but that doesn't mean we want to watch you do it.

Chris, don't be disingenuous. Obviously I know why people would want to be off the record when having a dinner conversation with friends. That is so very much not what Alito was doing. Samuel Alito was giving a speech to -- not having a conversation with -- hundreds of people, a few of whom he went to law school with, most of whom are just fellow alums who came for the star power. Scalia's speeches are even more egregious -- he's a political figure touring the country giving public speeches on politics to groups of complete strangers.

oh man. the volokh's are going to have some unfortunate children.

Seriously, thomas knows what's up: who's the chick to Sasha's left, and why aren't there more pictures of her?
WHAT KIND OF NONSENSICAL PHOTO ESSAY IS THIS??? There is a photo of Jeannie, but NOT of her former partner in crime, Dan Solove???? This is an absolute atrocity. In fact, methinks that there is an official Wonkette conspiracy against legal advisors to the former-sex-slaves of Jessica Cutler who are now suing her skank ass.
