I don't want to be accused of being a right-wing nut job, but Tolley has a point. You can't address some the torture and ignore the rest.
On the other hand, it must be pointed out that the Christian right contains a disturbing amount of sadomasochism. Their near universal embrace of the 'Passion of Christ' - a truly horrible movie - betrays the extent of this. I feel comfortable suggesting that these are people who feel deeply guilty, don't know why, and don't know what to do about it.
