Barack Obama, Man of 1,000 Voices

Michelle Obama’s grandfather once lived South Carolina, so Barry O’Bomber’s bizarre accent is totally understandable. And hell, Hawaii’s pretty damn far south! Right?

Christ, we’re gonna drink ourselves to death by June.

  • I wanna go to SC so I can be southern too! Southern = More American, right? 'Cus that's what I want, y'all.

  • No big deal. I do the same thing when I go to Boston. And I speak Spanish when I'm in Mexico. It's just being courteous to the locals.

  • OMFG, that's not just a southern accent, people. He's trying to sound like Martin Luther King, Jr. Listen to the cadence. I kept waiting for him to say "I have a dream today...that little white boys and little black girls will have universal health insurance; I HAVE a dream!"
Between the neverending incompetence of the Bushies and the unbearable pretentiousness of the candidates, it's going to be a very long 20 months.

  • @VforVilsack: When "more American" means "intelligent to a fifth grade level"...

  • I'm from Hawai'i and I live in the south now, so I guess I can't really hear either of his blackcents.

I agree with the MLK assessment, though. His diction is entirely too correct to be anything approaching truly southern; his syllabication can be measured with integers as opposed to the local dialect where a one syllable word with a long vowel sound uses approximately 1.6 syllables when the speaker is not trying to sound like a politician.

  • @Hetero Sapiens: Well that's why I said "absurd" Southern accent. I am from the South. Only people who talk like that are bigshot preachers and mayors.

  • @Ken Layne:
Thank you, Ken! especially for capping "South"--

Oh, BTW nowadays all the mayors down here do have that going for them, except the "cosmopolitan 'burbs", such as they are..

Yes ML the King did have that preacher accent. Altho, Nicki G. sure got the same cadence going at VT at the memorial service... Do get your attention, unlike the boring priests I had to listen to growing up..

  • Cool! I was wondering how long it would take for me to start despising him! Don't we have the best political system in the world? It's impossible to get elected to the highest office in the land unless you're a complete and utter douchebag. Go Barry!

  • Barack:

As a fellow African American, I beg you PLEASE DO NOT ADOPT THE SOUTHERN VOICE AS YOUR MOTTO!

  • MLK I can handle. If he start lovin' NASCAR, I have to draw a line.

  • Truth to tell, it wasn't THAT bad. I was expecting as bad of an accent as Dick Van Dyke's British Mary Poppins one. Or perhaps Foghorn Leghorn.

    I feel cheated.

  • Not half as bad as Hillary's accent, but let's just hope the insanity ends here. I don't want to hear Chris Dodd's hayseed accent anytime soon.

    "Ah's a-from thah grayte stayte of Connect-eye-cut!"

  • Is that guy behind him wearing a balaclava??

  • He did not just say "Amer-ca." well,I guess the SCer's fell for it the last 2 times...

  • First Hilary's blackcent, now this. What are these guys, politicians or something?

It's funny when these ivory tower types try to portray themselves as regular folks. Bet it wouldn't be so funny if we tried to do the same in their cirlces. Except in Hollywood, where it's the standard formula for a romantic comedy. In RL, though, nope.

Was I trying to make a point? I forget. My mind is still filled with the hunky marine jailhouse shower fantasy.

  • The more I see/hear Barry, the more underwhelmed I am.

  • Maybe being from North Carolina skews my perceptions, but this doesn't sound that bad or that weird to me. And as a big "Song of the South" fan ("B'rer Fox, please don't throw me in the briar patch!"), I guarantee that Barack does not sound remotely like that. Personally, I'm still waiting for the 'Huck Finn' candidate to emerge.

  • If his accent starts to change so quickly on brief visits to other parts of the U.S., what will happen during his junkets to Britain, Russia, China?
After all, he's going to need to fluff up his foreign policy experience.

  • @The Expat: Thought the same thing. It just shows that in the eyes of grainy YouTube footage, the Blacks and the Terror-freedomfighter-ists are all the same.

  • Damnit, who gave Drudge the ability to post stories on Wonkette?

  • You wouldn't even have posted this story if a black guy faked his accent.

  • He said "you guys."

No self respecting Southerner would ever say "you guys."

    It's "y'all."

The only thing less southern he could have said would be "you's."

  • Where was he, again?
I think I missed that part of the clip.

  • Actually, Hilo, HI is the southernmost cityi n the United States. Great question to win free drinks in bars.

  • dickthesnake says: "If he start lovin' NASCAR, I have to draw a line."

Can't a young fella from the Heartland appreciate Dee-Troit Iron?

Okay, Germans own some of the factories, but you get my drift.

  • First let me say that I do not care for Mr. Obama, even as a leftie negress. But let me remind everyone that there is that term called code switching. I am sure many of my white colleagues who marvel at how they "never would have known I was black if they heard me over the telephone" would be shocked to hear the way that I speak to my black family and friends at home on a Saturday night when the libations are flowing and the music is pumping. Which one is my "real" voice? Both are real, but I know which one will continue to help me "get paid."

So maybe just maybe we caught BO doing a little opportunistic switching. Now as far as him keeping it on the down low...

  • Skip to 1:35 in the countdown to hear him forget the name of place where he's speechifying.
