The SURGE Is Working!

Remember the SURGE that would finally win the war against whoever it is we’re fighting in Iraq for some unknown reason? Well, it’s a big success — if by “success” you mean U.S. troops are now dying at the fastest rate since the invasion four years ago!

October 2006-March 2007 were the deadliest six months of the war so far, while March also “marked the first time that the U.S. military suffered four straight months of 80 or more fatalities.” April is on its way to being the single deadliest month of the entire invasion and occupation.

Also, more people are shot, beheaded and blown up every single day in Iraq than were shot at Virginia Tech yesterday in the “deadliest shooting rampage in American history.”

  • My snark balloon just deflated.

Can we please just stop this madness right now before any more die for Bush, Cheney, and Rove's hubris?

  • Yeah, you're right, it's not like thirty-two students being mowed down in school is anything spectacular these days. "Biggest shooting rampage in history"! OoooOOoooo! Always with your finger on the calloused pulse, Wonkette.

  • By the way, just so you yanks are kept abreast, Canadian forces in Afghanistan are also experiencing their kill-iest month EVAR. But we're winning the war. These are "acts of desperation", after all. Or so our military spokesman parrots at us like the old, Scots whore that he is.

Oh, also, we're buying new tanks to send into Afghanistan. NEW. TANKS. Because our old ones didn't have air-conditioning and the Canadian Forces couldn't use them because they were cooking our soldiers into unconsciousness. WTF.

And why are we buying new tanks in war in which tanks are enormously useless. Because they are "a main weapon" in the Canadian strategy against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

  • Your post uses the logo of Surge, a citrus soft drink Coca-Cola rolled out in 1996 to compete with Mountain Dew. Is administration use of the term a clever campaign for the sweet swill's re-introduction?

Hey, that makes more sense than the combat strategy.

  • This is the GOP base dying in this war. Is Rove really such a political genius?

  • Rove? Please. He is all over this surge thing. He is thinking long-term. If they pull out now, it is a sure thing they lose the next election. But as long as they assert that we can win and bash dems over the head for not supporting the troops they can at least keep it competitive. Rove cares nothing about the lives of soldiers, only winning his political games. It is the real reason I find it so ironic that 70+ percent of the military votes Republican.

  • @AfghanVet:

You're absolutely right. If there's a withdrawal before November 2008 and all hell breaks loose, then the Republicans are toast; Bush wants the withdrawal to happen on the next guy's watch -- say, oh, late January, 2009.

  • Yeah, and Bush is attending stuff in Blacksburg but won't go to one funeral for the people whose death he actually had a hand in.

  • Golf clap for Wonkette.

I had no idea how one could possibly tie the shootings at Virginia Tech to George Bush.

    Well done.

There is a job waiting for you at the White House.

  • No doubt he'll pick up a check for the RNC while he's that close to NRA headquarters. Fake tears, arm around Laura, insincere words, hand shakes, pick up the check, get back on the plane.

BBC World News made a point yesterday of saying (paraphrasing) "President Bush expressed regret for the killings but defended the American right to bear arms" all in one breath.

  • Um...of COURSE there are more dying in the surge...that's because they are pushing further into the enemy. The idea being we kill more of them and, at times, they kill more of us.

Geez people, this ISN'T rocket science! When you push into the enemy's stronghold, your going to take hits...but the enemy will take MORE hits.

Wish people would leave war to those who know how to fight them!

  • @chiefpayne:

    Dude...three points:

    1) I hope you're joking.
    2) We are all perfectly aware of how you have to 'spend humans to kill humans'--we're just really not sure why--get it yet?
    3) I hope you're joking.

In any event, your talking point is appreciated--it's important to spread them around. Never too much noise in the system.

  • @henski1: Actually, I thought it was the most sincere speech he's had since....well, you know.

  • To paraphrase Edward G. Robinson in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS: "(sneering) Where's your maverick NOW?"

  • @Ted:

I guess it's a combination of his voice and too much experience. No matter what comes out of his mouth it sounds insincere to me. He could read the telephone book and I wouldn't believe him. The doubt-o-meter just heads straight for the red zone.

  • @henski1: Fair enough.

  • @WIDTAP: I had no idea how one could possibly tie the shootings at Virginia Tech to George Bush.

Gun violence and the NRA-kowtowing Republicans? I don't get it either.

Remember, support our cops unless they support gun control.

  • @chiefpayne: "When you push into the enemy's stronghold, your going to take hits"

Wish people would leave the commenting to those who know the difference between "your" and "you're".

  • @nojo:

Now if we could only tie the NRA to 9/11 we would have a trifecta!

  • @WIDTAP: Too late -- "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US".

  • Thanks for the link, Mr. Wonker. My problem is not necessarily with Bush on this issue (though, like most people with brains, despise him). It is with the fact that I cannot hear news anywhere except about Virginia Tech, why he did it, and his horrible plays. 33 people died at a college campus at America and everyone has a heart attack. 33 people die everyday in Iraq, and our senators want to take strolls through their markets to shop for fucking trinkets to prove how safe it is.

  • Yeah, no kiddin'. That Korean guy's a PUSSY!

Just think about it, though - we didn't fight him in Korea, so now…

  • @Cynica: Nice!
My personal favorite on that line was a "Your Fired" during the height of that Apprentice babble. Hard to determine what was worse - The Idiot who made it or the idiot who bought it. Ah well. I guess I should retire to my corner to let the manly men fight out this here Eyeraq thing.

  • The 'surge' and Bush and Cheney's comments about it have the feel of a Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon...'This time for sure!'

  • Can we stop trollying around in other people's lands for our over-bloated paranoias and xenophobias?
