Happy Loyalty Day, Nuestros Amigos
This is not an immigration protest; it only looks like one.
We’re still recovering from our wild ‘n crazy Patriot Day party — tthanks for the extra day to file our taxes, Founding Fathers! And now, the White House brings us this cheerful proclamation:
Our Nation is blessed and bound together by a creed of freedom and equality that is entrusted to all Americans. Preserving the ideals of our founding requires the service and sacrifice of every generation, and on Loyalty Day, we celebrate the gift of liberty and remember our own obligation to this great Nation….NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2006, as Loyalty Day. I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance, and to display the flag of the United States on Loyalty Day.
So the White House would say to you: “See all those immigrants marching in the streets of America’s major cities, waving (mostly) American flags? They’re not ‘protesting’ over immigration; they’re just celebrating Loyalty Day!”
(This is a brilliant, brilliant P.R. move. Who deserves credit for it? Tony Snow?)

I have had all manner of observers mailing me on "Where's-My-Immigrant-Day?" Turns out that restaurants are staffed, day-laborer construction crews are hummming, and Orek vacuum cleaners are lifting bowling balls in room after room. Life is somehow going on. In short - everywhere you'd expect to find an immigrant... well, one can be found.
Legal and illegal immigrants alike, who support some form of amnesty and want to do good things while in America ARE WORKING TODAY!
There is no substitute for hard work - not even a good protest.

While I too would love to attribute this to the Bushies Wikpedia tells us the following:
The holiday was first celebrated in the 1930s as Americanization Day,[citation needed] and was intended to serve as a counterweight to May Day, which was celebrated as a Communist holiday.
Loyalty Day is celebrated with parades and ceremonies in communities across the United States,[citation needed] although many people in the United States remain unaware of it. Although a legal holiday, it is not a federal holiday.
It was made an official holiday by the U.S. Congress on July 18, 1958 (Public Law 85-529).[1][2] It was first proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on May 1, 1959.[citation needed]
